Dispersal is a fundamental process influencing evolution, social behaviour, and the long-term persistence of populations. We use both observational and genetic data to investigate dispersal, kin-clustering and intergroup relatedness in the white-breasted thrasher, Ramphocinclus brachyurus, a cooperatively breeding bird that is globally endangered. Mark-resighting data suggested sex-biased dispersal, with females dispersing over greater distances while males remained philopatric. Accordingly, spatial autocorrelation analysis showed highly significant fine-scale genetic structure among males, but not among females. This fine-scale genetic structuring of the male population resulted in very high levels of relatedness between dominant males at neighbouring nests, similar to that seen within cooperative groups in many species where kin selection is cited as a cause of cooperation. By implication, between-group as well as within-group cooperation may be important, potentially creating a feedback loop in which short-distance dispersal by males leads to the formation of male kin clusters that in turn facilitate nepotistic interactions and favour further local recruitment. The strength of spatial autocorrelation, as measured by the autocorrelation coefficient, r, was approximately two to three times greater than that reported in previous studies of animals. Relatively short dispersal distances by both males and females may have a negative impact on the white-breasted thrasher's ability to colonize new areas, and may influence the long-term persistence of isolated populations. This should be taken into account when designating protected areas or selecting sites for habitat restoration.  相似文献

We isolated and characterized five polymorphic microsatellite markers for the grey fantail Rhipidura albiscapa from genomic libraries enriched for (AC)n and (GT)n microsatellites. In 34 adult individuals, the number of alleles per locus ranged from eight to 17. Observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.65 to 0.94 and 0.83 to 0.94, respectively. These markers will be useful for analysing extra‐pair paternity in fantails.  相似文献

We have isolated and characterized seven polymorphic microsatellite loci in the white‐winged chough (Corcorax melanorhamphos), a highly social, cooperatively breeding bird of Australian eucalypt woodlands. In analyses of 100 samples from 16 family groups, the number of alleles per locus ranged from four to 18, and observed heterozygosity ranged between 0.46 and 0.93. One locus appears to be sex‐linked. The primers were also tested in apostlebirds (Struthidera cinerea), the only other species in the subfamily Corcoracinae. Five loci were successfully amplified and three were polymorphic.  相似文献

Eight microsatellite DNA markers were isolated and characterized from white bearded manakin (Manacus manacus) using an enrichment cloning procedure. A large number of alleles (range 9–25), and high levels of observed heterozygosity (mean 0.67) were resolved in 236 individuals. No evidence for linkage disequilibrium or the presence of null alleles was found, indicating that these markers will be useful for examining genetic relatedness, parentage and population structure in manakins.  相似文献

To describe the exceptional mating system of the penduline tit, Remiz pendulinus, we aim to combine field observation records with DNA analysis based on polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers. Here we describe features of nine loci and their corresponding polymerase chain reaction primers. The observed number of alleles varied from four to seven and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.419 to 0.802. Neither of the loci is sex-linked and as linkage disequilibrium analysis showed they assort independently. Seven of the nine loci were polymorphic in the Cape penduline tit, Anthoscopus minutus.  相似文献

Hybridization with a close relative, the North American ruddy duck (Oxyura jamaicensis), is a major problem for the conservation of the endangered white‐headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala). We report the development of 11 microsatellite markers that can facilitate the identification of hybrids as well as the study of the population structure of both species across their distributions. These markers were tested in 63 white‐headed ducks and 50 ruddy ducks and show a larger diversity in the latter species.  相似文献

Seven polymorphic microsatellite loci are described in the marine intertidal gastropod Littorina saxatilis. Preliminary data on allelic variation of these loci in a White Sea population of L. saxatilis are presented in order to assess their potential utility as high‐resolution genetic markers for this model species.  相似文献

We developed 11 polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers for an Australian native shrub Banksia attenuata. The number of alleles per locus in 50 individuals varied from five to 18, observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.300 to 0.740 and from 0.537 to 0.918, respectively. Six loci showed no significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05), and null alleles appear to exist at locus BA‐B1. All loci showed independent inheritance.  相似文献

We developed 11 polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers for an Australian native plant, Daviesia triflora. The number of alleles per locus in 40 individuals varied from four to 19, and observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.450 to 0.925 and from 0.497 to 0.899, respectively. Nine loci showed no significant deviation from Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium (P > 0.05), and null alleles appear to exist at loci DT‐A102 and DT‐B103. All loci showed independent inheritance.  相似文献

Squid populations are being put under rapidly increasing commercial fishing pressure worldwide. The same species are known to be susceptible to extreme population fluctuations, so detailed knowledge of population substructuring and genetic diversity is essential for rational management. We present a set of microsatellite DNA loci suitable for population genetic analysis of Loligo gahi, the squid species subject to the most detailed monitoring and fishery control (around the Falkland Islands), with the future aim of generating management‐related information to aid conservation of this valuable natural resource.  相似文献

Metrioptera roeseli is a common bush‐cricket in Europe which prefers grassland as habitat. We developed microsatellite loci in order to study the population genetic structure and the effects of different habitat types on the genetic structure of the bush‐cricket in a rural landscape. In this paper, we report on six polymorphic microsatellite loci with seven to 16 alleles per locus in 20 individuals from the Lahn‐Dill‐Bergland in Hesse, Germany.  相似文献

The critically endangered Pangasianodon gigas is endemic to the Mekong River. Despite its importance, little is known about its genetic diversity and conservation efforts are hampered. Ten polymorphic dinucleotide microsatellite primer pairs were developed from DNA of P. gigas. The analysis of 20 individuals from hatchery stocks using these primers resulted in two to six alleles/locus; HO = 0.05–0.95; HE = 0.05–0.81. All but one locus (Pg‐3) conformed to Hardy–Weinberg expectation. Eight, six and seven primer pairs were amplified with the DNA from Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, Pangasius larnaudii and Pangasius sanitwongsei, respectively. These markers will be useful for genetic monitoring of wild and hatchery stocks of these pangasiids.  相似文献

Ten novel polymorphic microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized from the Balearic shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus), a critically endangered seabird. The developed loci revealed a relatively low number of alleles per locus, as well as low levels of polymorphism (HO = 0.377 ± 0.241). One of the loci appeared to be W‐linked. All polymorphic loci were successfully amplified in its closely related species, the Yelkouan shearwater (Puffinus yelkouan). These microsatellite markers would be useful for assessing population structure in the Balearic shearwater and the possible hybridization process between both shearwaters species.  相似文献

Ten GATA microsatellite DNA markers were isolated and characterized from black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) using an enrichment cloning procedure. High levels of heterozygosity (mean HO = 0.74 ± 0.026), and a large number of alleles (range = 5–16) were resolved in 70 individuals, indicating these markers will be useful for examining parentage, inbreeding and population structure in black grouse. No evidence for linkage disequilibrium or the presence of null alleles was found.  相似文献

We report 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci primers developed for striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), a widespread mesocarnivore in North America. Numbers of alleles in these loci ranged from seven to 14 and the observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.76 to 1.0. These primers will be useful for studying population dynamics of skunks where rabies is endemic and will be useful to estimate genetic relatedness among females sharing winter dens. Most of these primers amplify across species within the Mephitidae.  相似文献

Eight polymorphic microsatellite loci are described for the Iberian rock lizard species, Iberolacerta cyreni. Loci were isolated from a partial genomic library that had been enriched for AAAG repeat sequence. Number of alleles per locus ranged from two to 13 in a sample of 24 individuals from the Sierra de Guadarrama (central Spain). Observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.13 to 0.96. At least three loci were amplified and polymorphic in four other Iberian rock lizard species: Iberolacerta monticola, Iberolacerta bonnali, Iberolacerta aranica and Iberolacerta aurelioi. These markers will be used to study mating strategies and reproductive success in I. cyreni.  相似文献

Spotted suslik Spermophilus suslicus is one of the most endangered mammal species in Poland. Over the last 50 years, it lost more than 90% of its populations and about 70% of its individuals. In order to establish a conservation and reintroduction program, the knowledge of population structure of the species is crucial. We have developed nine polymorphic microsatellite loci to analyse the population structure. Six of the primer sets also amplify polymorphic markers in the European suslik Spermophilus citellus.  相似文献
