Although the concept of transfer function is intrinsically related to an input–output relationship, the traditional and widely used estimation method merges both feedback and feedforward interactions between the two analyzed signals. This limitation may endanger the reliability of transfer function analysis in biological systems characterized by closed loop interactions. In this study, a method for estimating the transfer function between closed loop interacting signals was proposed and validated in the field of cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory variability. The two analyzed signals x and y were described by a bivariate autoregressive model, and the causal transfer function from x to y was estimated after imposing causality by setting to zero the model coefficients representative of the reverse effects from y to x. The method was tested in simulations reproducing linear open and closed loop interactions, showing a better adherence of the causal transfer function to the theoretical curves with respect to the traditional approach in presence of non-negligible reverse effects. It was then applied in ten healthy young subjects to characterize the transfer functions from respiration to heart period (RR interval) and to systolic arterial pressure (SAP), and from SAP to RR interval. In the first two cases, the causal and non-causal transfer function estimates were comparable, indicating that respiration, acting as exogenous signal, sets an open loop relationship upon SAP and RR interval. On the contrary, causal and traditional transfer functions from SAP to RR were significantly different, suggesting the presence of a considerable influence on the opposite causal direction. Thus, the proposed causal approach seems to be appropriate for the estimation of parameters, like the gain and the phase lag from SAP to RR interval, which have a large clinical and physiological relevance.  相似文献

Underwater passive acoustic monitoring systems record many hours of audio data for marine research, making fast and reliable non-causal signal detection paramount. Such detectors assist in reducing the amount of labor required for signal annotations, which often contain large portions devoid of signals.Cetacean vocalization detection based on spectral entropy is investigated as a means of vocalization discovery. Previous techniques using spectral entropy mostly consider time–frequency enhancement of the entropy measure, and utilize the short time Fourier transform (STFT) as its time–frequency (TF) decomposition. Spectral entropy methods also requires the user to set a detection threshold manually, which call for knowledge of the produced entropy measures. This paper considers median filtering as a simple, effective way to provide temporal stabilization to the entropy measure, and considers the continuous wavelet transform (CWT) as an alternative TF decomposition. K-means clustering is used to determine the threshold required to accurately separate the signal/no-signal entropy measures, resulting in a one-dimensional, two-class classification problem. The class means are used to perform pseudo-probabilistic soft class assignment, which is a useful metric in algorithmic development. The effect of median filtering, signal-to-noise ratio and the chosen TF decomposition are investigated. The accuracy and specificity measures of the proposed detection technique are simulated using a pulsed frequency modulated sweep, corrupted by a sample of ocean noise. The results show that median filtering is particularly effective for low signal-to-noise ratios. Both the STFT and CWT prove to be effective TF analyses for signal detection purposes, each presenting with different advantages and drawbacks. The simulated results provide insight into configuring the proposed detector, which is compared to a conventional STFT-based spectral entropy detector using manually annotated humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) songs recorded in False Bay, South Africa, July2021.The proposed method shows a significant improvement in detection accuracy and specificity, while also providing a more interpretable detection threshold setting via soft class assignment, providing a detector for use in development of adaptive algorithms.  相似文献

Nonlinear interactions in the human visual system were studied using visual evoked potentials (VEPs). In one experiment (superimposed condition), all segments of a dartboard pattern were contrast reversed in time by a sum of two sinusoidal signals. In a second experiment (lateral condition), segments in some regions of the dartboard pattern were contrast reversed by a single sinusoid of one frequency, while segments in other (contiguous) regions of the pattern were contrast reversed by a single sinusoid of another frequency. An identical set of ten frequency pairs was used in each experiment. The frequency pairs were chosen such that the difference between frequencies in each pair was 2 Hz. Amplitudes and phases of the sum and difference frequency components of the VEP (intermodulation terms) were retrieved by Fourier analysis and served as measures of nonlinear interactions. The use of input pairs with a fixed separation in frequency enabled the estimation of the temporal characteristics of the visual pathways prior to a second linear stage. The use of superimposed and lateral conditions revealed antagonistic contributions to the VEP, possibly reflecting direct-through excitatory and lateral inhibitory pathways, respectively.Supported by grants from the U.S. National Eye Institute, the Esther A. and Joseph Klingenstein Fund, and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation  相似文献

Summary Echolocating bats behave as though they perceive the crosscorrelation functions between their sonar transmissions and echoes as images of targets, at least with respect to perception of target range, horizontal direction, and shape. These data imply that bats use a multi-dimensional acoustic imaging system for echolocation with broadband, usually frequencymodulated signals. The perceptual structure of the echolocation signals used by different species of bats was investigated using the crosscorrelation functions between emitted signals and returning echoes as indices of perceptual acuity.Thebandwidth andaverage period of echolocation signals are identified as the principal acoustic features of broadband sonar waveforms that determine the quality of target perceptions. The multiple-harmonic structure of echolocation sounds, which is characteristic of the broadband signals of the majority of species of bats, yields a lower average period (separation of peaks in the crosscorrelation function) than would be expected from the average frequency of the signal as a whole, sharpening target localization. The frequency-modulation of the harmonics in the sonar sounds of bats reduces the heights of side-peaks in the crosscorrelation functions of the signals, promoting sharp, unambiguous determination of target position, and leads to the well-known coupling of perception of range and velocity for moving targets. The shapes of the frequency sweeps and bandwidths of frequency modulation contribute to reducing this range-velocity coupling. Harmonic organization nearly eliminates range-velocity coupling. The use of multiple-harmonics and fairly broad frequency modulation in sonar signals yields especially sharp resolution of target position to reject clutter interference. Such signals are commonly used by bats in cluttered environments. Very broad frequency sweeps with fewer harmonics may accomplish the same effect, but the low signal periodicity contributed by harmonic structure is an important factor in banishing side-peaks in the crosscorrelation function from perception.Abbreviations ACR autocorrelation function - AMB ambiguity diagram - CF constant frequency - FM frequency modulated - LFM linear frequency sweep - LPM linear period sweep - XCR crosscorrelation function  相似文献

Abstract

The sex ratio and factors that affect sporophyte production were studied by following one population of the clonal moss Hylocomium splendens growing on top of a boulder in a S.E. Norwegian boreal spruce forest valley for 5 years. Sex of ca 75% of all segments recorded during the study period could be determined from records of occurrence of sporophytes, gametangia and branching patterns. The population had a 4:1 female-biased sex ratio. Of 1005 female segments recorded during the 5-year study period, 29.8% carried sporophytes. The frequency of sporophyte production in female segments varied more than threefold among years, and was apparently related to climatic favourability for bryophyte growth and development. At the scale of H. splendens segments, sporophyte production was favoured by large size of segments and high relative growth rates. A distinct low-size threshold for sporophyte production occurred in all years. This threshold was higher in years of low sporophyte frequency, with an absolute low limit of ca 2 mg segment dry weight. The fraction of female segments with sporophytes, and the number of sporophytes per sporophyte-carrying segment, increased with segment size from the low threshold to an upper size threshold, beyond which further increase in segment size did not imply increased sporophyte frequency. This may be caused by the spatial distribution of sex organs. Sporophyte production increased strongly upwards in the bryophyte carpet, even after vertical variation in size had been taken into account. This indicates that radiation plays a key role in initiation of sexual branches, and that the processes previously demonstrated to regulate vegetative branching apply to branching in general.  相似文献

Summary The association of the H-h (hairy-hairless septa) character with plant weight was studied in the coupling and repulsion phases in F2 of reciprocal crosses between large (L) and small (S) genotrophs of flax variety Stormont Cirrus. F2 plants of reciprocal crosses in coupling (LH x Sh) and in repulsion (Lh x SH) giving H-h segregations were grown with their parents at two sowing times. Significant positive and negative associations between h and plant weight were obtained. A model is proposed based on the hypothesis that the H phenotype had changed to the h phenotype at the time of induction by a heterochromatic region extending over this locus. In the heterozygote, stable equilibria of the homozygotes are destroyed and transfer of heterochromatin, or number of reiterated sequences, or a decrease in one homologue and an increase in the other, occur in this region between homologous chromosomes. The amount and direction of the association is dependent upon the frequency of transfer: 0% transfer gives complete positive association; 50% transfer, no association; 100% transfer, complete negative association. This mechanism or heterochromatic transfer preserves the Mendelian ratio of 31 of Hh in the F2. It is also supposed that there must be other controlling elements present as well.  相似文献

Aims: The association between tissue factor (TF) expression and increased rate of tumour metastasis is well established. In this study, we have examined the hypothesis that the expression of TF by disseminated tumour cells confers protection against immune recognition and cytotoxicity. Materials and methods: A hybrid EGFP-TF protein was expressed in HT29 colon carcinoma and K562 lymphoblast cell lines. To assess the cytotoxic activity against tumour cells over-expressing TF, a novel method was used, based on the direct measurement of fluorescently labelled HT29 or K562 target cells. Results: Upon challenge with peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC), tumour cells expressing TF partially evaded cellular cytotoxicity (Δ=15–40% reduction in cytotoxicity). Moreover, the influence of TF was not primarily dependent on its procoagulant function, although the inclusion of 20% (v/v) plasma did lower the rate of cytotoxicity against untransfected cells. However, expression of a truncated form of TF, devoid of the cytoplasmic domain, did not mediate any degree of inhibition of cytotoxicity, suggesting that the protective function of TF is principally due to this domain. Conclusions: We conclude that TF can promote immune evasion in tumour cells expressing this protein leading to increased survival and therefore metastatic rate in such cells.  相似文献

Variation in temperature can affect the expression of a variety of important fitness‐related behaviours, including those involved with mate attraction and selection, with consequences for the coordination of mating across variable environments. We examined how temperature influences the expression of male mating signals and female mate preferences—as well as the relationship between how male signals and female mate preferences change across temperatures (signal–preference temperature coupling)—in Enchenopa binotata treehoppers. These small plant‐feeding insects communicate using plantborne vibrations, and our field surveys indicate they experience significant natural variation in temperature during the mating season. We tested for signal–preference temperature coupling in four populations of E. binotata by manipulating temperature in a controlled laboratory environment. We measured the frequency of male signals—the trait for which females show strongest preference—and female peak preference—the signal frequency most preferred by females—across a range of biologically relevant temperatures (18°C–36°C). We found a strong effect of temperature on both male signals and female preferences, which generated signal–preference temperature coupling within each population. Even in a population in which male signals mismatched female preferences, the temperature coupling reinforces predicted directional selection across all temperatures. Additionally, we found similar thermal sensitivity in signals and preferences across populations even though populations varied in the mean frequency of male signals and female peak preference. Together, these results suggest that temperature variation should not affect the action of sexual selection via female choice, but rather should reinforce stabilizing selection in populations with signal–preference matches, and directional selection in those with signal–preference mismatches. Finally, we do not predict that thermal variation will disrupt the coordination of mating in this species by generating signal–preference mismatches at thermal extremes.  相似文献

Arachnids and insects use long, thin hairs as motion sensors to detect signals contained in the movement of the surrounding air. These hairs often form groups with a small spacing of tens to hundreds of micrometers between them. For air oscillation frequencies of biological interest, the potential exists for viscosity-mediated coupling among hairs in a group affecting their response characteristics. Even a small diameter hair can, in principle, affect the flow field around it and the dynamics of the hairs in its neighborhood. The viscosity-mediated coupling between a pair of hairs is investigated here both experimentally and theoretically. The conditions for the existence of the coupling effect, and its magnitude as a function of relevant parameters, are determined. In the range of biologically relevant frequencies (30–300 Hz), viscous coupling between pairs of hairs is only very small in the case of the spider Cupiennius salei. Theoretical analysis points to the relatively large spacing between hairs (20 to 50 hair diameters) and the tuning of the hairs to the above-mentioned frequencies to explain the practical absence of coupling.  相似文献

A method is proposed for the interpretation of the signals in sensory nerve fibres. It is applicable to systems in which the transfer function between the input to a sense organ and the action potential firing frequency is known. In the present case, the chelonian muscle spindle is considered since its output to ramphold-relase and sinusoidal stretches can be rather accurately simulated.  相似文献

Conditional entropy approach for the evaluation of the coupling strength   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
A method that enables measurement of the degree of coupling between two signals is presented. The method is based on the definition of an uncoupling function calculating, by means of entropy rates, the minimum amount of independent information (i.e. the information carried by one signal which cannot be derived from the other). An estimator of the uncoupling function able to deal with short segments of data (a few hundred samples) is proposed, thus enabling the method to be used for usual experimental recordings. A synchronisation index is derived from the estimate of the uncoupling function by means of a minimisation procedure. It quantifies the maximum amount of information exchanged between the two signals. Simulations in which non-linear coordination schemes are produced and changes in the coupling strength are artificially induced are used to check the ability of the proposed index to measure the degree of synchronisation between signals. The synchronisation analysis is utilised to measure the coupling strength between the beat-to-beat variability of the sympathetic discharge and ventilation in decerebrate artificially ventilated cats and the degree of synchronisation between the beat-to-beat variability of the heart period and ventricular repolarisation interval in normal subjects and myocardial infarction patients. The sympathetic discharge and ventilation are strongly coupled and the coupling strength is not affected by manoeuvres capable of increasing or depressing sympathetic activity. The synchronisation is lost after spinalisation. The synchronisation analysis confirms that the heart period and ventricular repolarisation interval are well coordinated. In normal subjects, the synchronisation index is not modified by experimental conditions inducing changes in the sympathovagal balance. On the contrary, it strongly decreases after myocardial infarction, thus detecting and measuring the uncoupling between the heart period and ventricular repolarisation interval. Messenger (m)RNA sequences complementary to the mRNA sequences for the receptors to epidermal growth factor (EGF), interleukin-2 (IL-2) and transferrin (TF) were written out and compared for homologies with their ligands (EGF, IL-2 and TF, respectively). Highly significant amino acid and nucleotide homologies between the ligands and their appropriate receptor complements were detected in each case. For example, EGF and its receptor complement contained two homologous segments, each being six amino acids in length. When these segments were screened for matches against a protein sequence bank (3060 proteins and 616,748 test segments), only EGF contained either sequence. Similar results were obtained with IL-2 and TF. In each case, the homologous segments corresponded to complementary regions in the ligand binding portion of the receptor.  相似文献

This study draws the interest of system identification to the experimental modelling of in vitro uptake kinetics of photosensitising agents (PS) into cancer cells. The proposed identification methodology must be usable and valid for every PS. Therefore, three PSs characterized by opposing chemical and biological properties have been selected: (1) PC: a second generation photosensitising agent conjugated via a spacer to a VEGF receptor-specific heptapeptide, (2) Ce6: Chlorin e6, and (3) TPP: TetraPhenylPorphyrin. Experiments have been carried out with two rates (2% and 9%) of foetal bovin serum in the culture medium and one cancer cell line U87 a human malignant glioma. Difficulties of such an application are triple: (i) lack of data, (ii) low signal-to-noise ratio and (iii) ‘poor’ stimulus signals. The proposed identification methodology deals with the design of experiments, the selection of a model structure, the estimation of the model parameters and the estimation of the parameter uncertainties. The photosensitiser uptake phenomenon is described by a first-order transfer function. Estimates of the time constant and the static gain provide quantitative information about the uptake rate and yield of the PS. The parameter uncertainty is described by confidence regions in parameters space. This representation is presented as an efficient way to discriminate the uptake characteristics of different photosensitisers. This representation also emphasizes the effects of some biological factors, such as the serum rate, on the uptake yield.  相似文献

In this paper we present two methodologies to generate heart rate variability (HRV) signals characterized by controlled and real-like time-frequency (TF) structure to be used to assess different methods of non-stationary HRV analysis. The synthesized signals are stochastic processes whose TF structure is predetermined by choosing either the time-course of the instantaneous frequencies and powers or the shape of the TF model function. They consist of three steps: (a) choice of the desired TF structure of the signals by choosing a set of design parameters; (b) automatic identification of the parameters of the corresponding models via simple closed-form expressions; (c) synthesis of the desired stochastic signals. Two measures to evaluate the goodness of the simulated signals are also given. Using this framework we were able to model the wide range of non-stationarities observed in heart rate modulation during exercise stress testing and experiments of music-induced emotions. We used the proposed methodology to assess the capability of the smoothed pseudo Wigner–Ville distribution (SPWVD) to quantify HRV patterns. We observed that the SPWVD followed the temporal evolution of the spectral components even when sudden and sharp transitions occur.  相似文献

Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) is an important turf and forage grass in the southeastern United States and other subtropical regions. Biolistic co-transfer of two unlinked, minimal, linear transgene expression cassettes (MCs) into the apomictic bahiagrass cv. Argentine was carried out to evaluate co-integration, quantify co-expression and analyze inheritance to apomictic seed progeny. Gold projectiles were coated with minimal unlinked nptII and bar expression cassettes in a 1:2 molar ratio. Complexity of transgene loci correlated with the amount of DNA used during gene transfer. Transgenic plants displayed a simple nptII integration pattern with 1–4 hybridization signals compared to the non-selected bar gene with 2 to more than 5 hybridization signals per transgenic line. Co-expression of unlinked nptII and bar genes occurred in 19 of the 20 co-transformed lines (95% co-expression frequency). Protein quantification revealed that several lines with complex integration patterns displayed a higher transgene expression than lines with simple transgene integration patterns. Several transgenic lines displayed hybridization signals indicative of concatemerization. Concatemers were confirmed following PCR amplification and sequence analysis of transgene loci. The obligate apomictic bahiagrass cv. Argentine produced uniform seed progeny without segregation of simple or complex transgene loci. NPTII- and PAT-ELISA, as well as herbicide application, confirmed stable expression of the nptII and bar gene at levels similar to the primary transformants. These results demonstrate that biolistic transfer of MCs support stable and high level co-expression of transgenes in bahiagrass.  相似文献
