  • 1.1. The oxygen consumption in μl/hr/adult fly and per mg wet wt is reported for the following stocks of Bogotá D. pseudoobscura; two stocks grown at 15°C and two stocks grown at 25°C, measured at 15°, 20°, 25° and 30°C.
  • 2.2. One of the 25°C stocks of D. pseudoobscura has higher respiration at 20°C and 25°C than do those grown at 15°C. Both of the stocks grown at 25°C have higher respiration at 30°C than do those grown at 15°C.
  • 3.3. The oxygen consumption is alos reported for D. viracochi grown at 15° and at 25°C. No significant differences are found between these.
  • 4.4. The Q10 values are reported for both species. In D. pseudoobscura in general they are highest for the interval of 15–20°C and lowest for 20–25°C.
  • 5.5. It is concluded that these stenothermal species normally living at low temperatures do not have the capacity to adapt to a higher temperature.

Coughlan reviews Norman M. Ford's When Did I Begin? Conception of the Human Individual in History, Philosophy and Science (Cambridge University Press; 1988). Ford, master of a Catholic theological college, has written a critique of the view that the life of the human person begins at the fertilization of the ovum. He believes that "when does a human being begin?" is an ontological question, and that attainment of personhood is a fact which calls for appropriate moral and legal attitudes, rather than a product of moral or legal attitudes or conventions. Ford bases his arguments on a detailed analysis of both the biological facts and the significance of early human embryology. Coughlan, while taking issue with some of Ford's reasoning, praises the book for its spirit of honesty, its well-argued transitions, and its instructiveness in human embryology. This article explores the usefulness of interdisciplinarity as method of enquiry by proposing an investigation of the concept of information in the light of semiotics. This is because, as Kull, Deacon, Emmeche, Hoffmeyer and Stjernfelt state, information is an implicitly semiotic term (Biological Theory 4(2):167–173, 2009: 169), but the logical relation between semiosis and information has not been sufficiently clarified yet. Across the history of cybernetics, the concept of information undergoes an uneven development; that is, information is an ‘objective’ entity in first order cybernetics, and becomes a ‘subjective’ entity in second order cybernetics. This contradiction relegates the status of information to that of a ‘true’ or ‘false’ formal logic problem. The present study proposes that a solution to this contradiction can be found in Deely’s reconfiguration of Peirce’s ‘object’ (as found in his triadic model of semiosis) into ‘thing’ and ‘object’ (Deely 1981). This ontology allows one to argue that information is neither ‘true’ nor ‘false’, and to suggest that, when considered in light of its workability, information can be both true and false, and as such it constitutes an organism’s purely objective reality (Deely 2009b). It is stated that in the process of building such a reality, information is ‘motivated’ by environmental, physiological, emotional (including past feelings and expectations) constraints which are, in turn, framed by observership. Information is therefore found in the irreducible cybersemiotic process that links at once all these conditions and that is simultaneously constrained by them. The integration of cybernetics’ and semiotics’ understanding of information shows that history is the analytical principle that grants scientific rigour to interdisciplinary investigations. As such, in any attempt to clarify its epistemological stance (e.g. the semiotic aspect of information), it is argued that biosemiotics does not need only to acknowledge semiotics (as it does), but also cybernetics in its interdisciplinary heritage.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that during the first year of life infants start learning the prosodic, phonetic and phonotactic properties of their native language. In parallel, infants start associating sound sequences with semantic representations. However, the question of how these two processes interact remains largely unknown. The current study explores whether (and when) the relative phonotactic probability of a sound sequence in the native language has an impact on infants’ word learning. We exploit the fact that Labial-Coronal (LC) words are more frequent than Coronal-Labial (CL) words in French, and that French-learning infants prefer LC over CL sequences at 10 months of age, to explore the possibility that LC structures might be learned more easily and thus at an earlier age than CL structures. Eye movements of French-learning 14- and 16-month-olds were recorded while they watched animated cartoons in a word learning task. The experiment involved four trials testing LC sequences and four trials testing CL sequences. Our data reveal that 16-month-olds were able to learn the LC and CL words, while14-month-olds were only able to learn the LC words, which are the words with the more frequent phonotactic pattern. The present results provide evidence that infants’ knowledge of their native language phonotactic patterns influences their word learning: Words with a frequent phonotactic structure could be acquired at an earlier age than those with a lower probability. Developmental changes are discussed and integrated with previous findings.  相似文献

Calcium- and integrin-binding protein 1 (CIB1) is a ubiquitous, multifunctional regulatory protein consisting of four helix-loop-helix EF-hand motifs. Neither EF-I nor EF-II binds divalent metal ions; however, EF-III is a mixed Mg2+/Ca2+-binding site, and EF-IV is a higher-affinity Ca2+-specific site. Through the generation of several CIB1 mutant proteins, we have investigated the importance of the last (-Z) metal-coordinating position of EF-III (D127) and EF-IV (E172) with respect to the binding of CIB1 to Mg2+, Ca2+, and its biological target, the cytoplasmic domain of the platelet alphaIIb integrin. A D127N mutant had reduced Mg2+ and Ca2+ affinity at EF-III but retained affinity for the alphaIIb domain. A D127E mutant had increased Mg2+ and Ca2+ affinity at EF-III, but unexpectedly, the affinity for the alphaIIb domain was too low for binding to be observed. E172Q and E172D mutants showed no and weak Mg2+ binding at EF-IV, respectively, and each mutant had reduced Ca2+ affinity at EF-IV and showed moderate metal-dependent differences in affinity for the alphaIIb domain. Finally, a D127Q mutant bound Mg2+ and Ca2+ in a manner similar to that of D127N, but like that of D127E, the affinity for the alphaIIb domain was reduced below the detection limit. These data, combined with a NMR-based structural comparison of the Mg2+- and Ca2+-loaded CIB1-alphaIIb peptide complexes, suggest that the D127E and D127Q mutations have a disruptive effect on alphaIIb binding since they expand the metal-binding loop and change the alpha-helix positions in EF-III. Conversely, upon replacement of the ancestral Glu with Asp at the -Z position of EF-III, CIB1 gained affinity for alphaIIb, and the Ca2+ affinity of CIB1 shifted into a range where the protein is able to act as an intracellular Ca2+ sensor.  相似文献

Williams and Bargh (2008) reported an experiment in which participants were simply asked to plot a single pair of points on a piece of graph paper, with the coordinates provided by the experimenter specifying a pair of points that lay at one of three different distances (close, intermediate, or far, relative to the range available on the graph paper). The participants who had graphed a more distant pair reported themselves as being significantly less close to members of their own family than did those who had plotted a more closely-situated pair. In another experiment, people's estimates of the caloric content of different foods were reportedly altered by the same type of spatial distance priming. Direct replications of both results were attempted, with precautions to ensure that the experimenter did not know what condition the participant was assigned to. The results showed no hint of the priming effects reported by Williams and Bargh (2008).  相似文献

Ten healthy middle-aged women volunteered for a study to test the effect of lactulose--a synthetic, non-absorbable disaccharide--on the colonic metabolism of bile acids and on bile lipid composition. Lactulose (60 g daily in eight cases, 39 g daily in two) was taken as a proprietary syrup for six weeks, and bile was collected by duodenal intubation before and immediately after six weeks. All subjects showed a fall in the percentage of the 7-alpha-dehydroxylated bile acid deoxycholic acid (mean 28.4 +/- SEM 3.7 to 15.6 +/- 2.4; p less than 0.002) and a rise in the percentage of the primary bile acid chenodeoxycholic acid (mean 33.2 +/- 42.9 +/- 2.9; p less than 0.001). The percentage of cholic acid rose in eight subjects but mean values did not differ significantly. Bile was initially super-saturated with cholesterol in most subjects and became less saturated with cholesterol in all but one (mean saturation index 1.40 +/- 0.11 to 1.19 +/- 0.07; p less these 0.005). These data support the theory colonic bacteria contribute to cholesterol gall-stone formation.  相似文献

A simple, rapid, and flexible modelling approach was applied to explore the impacts of climate change on hydrologic inputs and consequent implications for nutrient loading to Lake Mälaren, Sweden using a loading function model (GWLF). The first step in the process was to adapt the model for use in a large and complex Swedish catchment. We focused on the Galten basin with four rivers draining into the western region of Mälaren. The catchment model was calibrated and tested using long-term historical data for river discharge and dissolved nutrients (N, P). Then multiple regional climate model simulation results were downscaled to the local catchment level, and used to simulate possible hydrological and nutrient loading responses to warmer world scenarios. Climate change projections for the rivers of Galten basin show profound changes in the timing of discharge and nutrient delivery due to increased winter precipitation and earlier snow melt. Impacts on total annual discharge and load are minimal, but the alteration in river flow regime and the timing of nutrient delivery for future climate scenarios is strikingly different from historical conditions.  相似文献

Surfactant protein A (SP-A), which is a lung innate immune system component, is known to bind glycolipids present at the cell surface of a mycobacterial pathogen. Lipoarabinomannan (LAM), a component of mycobacterial thick, waxy cell wall, is one of the glycolipid ligands for SP-A. In order to assess binding of synthetic glycolipids with SP-A and the glycosidic linkage preferences for the interaction, β-arabinofuranoside trisaccharide glycolipids constituted with β-(1→2), β-(1→3) and β-(1→2), β-(1→5) linkages relevant to LAM were synthesized through chemical glycosylations. The efficacies of synthetic glycolipids to interact with SP-A were assessed by using the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) technique, from which association-dissociation rate constants and equilibrium binding constants were derived. The equilibrium binding constants of the interaction of two constitutionally varying β-arabinofuranoside glycolipids with SP-A were found to be in the millimolar range. A comparison of the results with few α-anomeric arabinofuranoside glycolipids showed that glycolipids with β-anomeric linkages were having relatively lower equilibrium binding constants than those with α-anomeric linkages in binding to the protein, whereas oligosaccharides alone, without lipidic chains, exhibited higher equilibrium binding constants. Further, the synthetic compounds inhibited the growth of mycobacteria and affected sliding motilities of the bacteria, although to an extent relatively lesser than that of synthetic compounds constituted with α-anomeric linkages.  相似文献

Unhatched, but fully developed larvae of two solitary ascidians Ascidia mentula O.F. Müller and Ascidiella scabra (O.F. Müller) were incubated in a variety of adult tissue extracts, which an earlier study had shown to accelerate metamorphosis. Our study confirmed this observation and showed, furthermore, that tissue extracts induce tail resorption in unhatched larvae of Ascidiella. For both species, the most active induction of metamorphosis was obtained with tunic tissue extracts. The results indicate that chemical stimulation without the presence of tactile cues may initiate metamorphosis. We suggest that the ability of tunic extracts to induce metamorphosis may explain juvenile establishment on adult ascidians and their aggregated distribution found in nature.  相似文献

Natural human languages are predominantly vocal. This suggests that, during evolution, speech may have enhanced the efficiency, utility, or flexibility of previous vocal behaviors. If so, there may be parallels between certain aspects of the vocalization patterns of human and nonhuman primates. The literature on humans contains evidence for greater frequency of vocalization, or volubility, between female–female than male–male dyads, and greater volubility among individuals of higher than lower social rank or status. We analyzed two classes of vocalization in free-ranging vervet monkey infants. In both classes, females vocalized significantly more often than males, and high-ranking animals were more voluble than mid- and low-ranking animals. If these findings are confirmed in primates other than vervets, it is conceivable that the voice contributes to the solution of some pan-primate problems, offering clues to the vocal bias in human languages.  相似文献
