Assessing the variation in individual frontal sinus outlines
It is often suggested that the frontal sinus morphology of no two individuals is alike, and that the configuration of the frontal sinus is as unique to an individual as his or her fingerprints. However, no empirical, quantitative testing of the uniqueness of frontal sinus outlines has ever been performed. Such testing is necessary for frontal sinus identifications to be admissible in many courts. This study investigated frontal sinus outline variability using elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA), a geometric morphometric approach that fits a closed curve to an ordered set of data points, generating a set of coefficients that can be used to reproduce the outline. Two-dimensional representations of 808 frontal sinuses (as seen in posterior-anterior cranial radiographs) were digitized, and differences in their shapes were assessed quantitatively by comparing the Euclidean distances between EFA-generated outlines. Results show that Euclidean distances between outlines of different individuals are significantly larger than those between replicates of the same individual, and typicalities show that the probability of finding two different individuals with Euclidean distances less that that between a particular case's replicate is very small. Thus, there is a quantifiable and significant difference between the shapes of individuals' frontal sinus outlines.

Sutures in the dermal skull roof of several Palaeozoic temnospondyl amphibians were studied, including Archegosaurus decheni, Sclerocephalus haeuseri, Cheliderpeton latirostre (Archegosauridae), Acanthostomatops vorax (Zatrachydidae), Onchiodon labyrinthicus (Eryopidae), Micromelerpeton credneri and Branchierpeton amblystomum (Dissorophoidea). Lamellae, flat bevels, butt joints, steep walls, and grooves are the sutural types occurring. Morphological sutural differences cannot be used as taxonomically relevant characters, as they mainly differ in their functional manifestations. Similarities of sutural patterns in taxa not closely related are most probably based on convergence, therefore sutural morphology allows functional conclusions rather than revealing phylogenetic relationships. The basic sutural pattern is described in Micromelerpeton credneri. Different textures and obliquity patterns of the sutural surfaces are characteristic of each region of the skull roof. In all temnospondyls studied, the median plane and the margin of the skull roof show a nearly uniform sutural morphology; the circumorbital region is most complex. Although the skulls studied are akinetic, mesokinetic movements of dermal elements along their sutures must have been permitted to guarantee the dynamic stability of the skull construction.

Cartesian transformation, applied as a landmark morphometric method, is used to investigate some of the evolutionary shape changes leading to the skulls of the modern rhinoceroses. The early Oligocene genusSubhyracodon serves as the primitive shape from which the extant genera (Dicerorhinus, Rhinocerso, Diceros, andCeratotherium) have been transformed. Coordinate data for 21 landmarks, defined in lateral view, are analyzed by the computer program Thinplate Splines. Each of the four transformations are interpreted separately as shape change fromSubhyracodon. Computed results forRhinoceros are also compared with previous results obtained by visual interpretation (the classic method). Among the extant genera,Ceratotherium andRhinoceros have the most derived shapes and are opposites with respect to orientation of the occiput and relative size of the mandible angle. The significance of these foci of change is discussed in terms of the functions of the masseter and posterior temporalis muscles. In head positions associated with feeding on short vs. tall grasses, the two skull shapes are consistent with a role for these muscles in support of a large mandible against gravity. This common factor may help to explain both shapes.

Cranial convergence in nine species of arvicolids is quantified phenetically using geometric morphometry. In a preliminary step, a hypothesis about phyletic relationships is proposed as a framework against which to examine morphological comparisons. The cranial morphology is then depicted in three series of 37, 20 and 13 landmarks characterizing the lower, upper and lateral sides of the skull respectively. Superimposition (Procrustes) methods are used to quantify shape differences and establish phenograms for the three sides of the skull. The phenogram obtained for lateral sides reveals a strong connection between skull profile and mode of life: surface dwelling forms have elongated skulls whereas burrowers have angular skulls. The phenogram of the lower sides show no clear correlation between shape and mode of life. Analysis of the upper cranial sides revealed a substantial difference between hard-substrate burrowers and other ecological groups. The results of the morphological analyses are compared with the phyletic hypothesis and with ecological data to explore how convergences take place in the evolution of arvicolids. Analyses pointed out three instances of morphological convergence: one between Synaptomys cooperi and voles, one between Lagurus lagurus and lemmings, and one between Myopus schisticolor and some voles. Four main ecological events are discussed.

Shell outlines of 202 extant cytheroidean ostracods were analysed in dorsal, lateral, and posterior views by elliptic Fourier analysis. The results obtained confirm that the exterior morphology is related to ecological factors as well as phylogenetic constraints. Phytal species living on tall seagrass and benthic species burrowing in sediments are characterized and differentiated from the species crawling on sediments by the presence of slender shells with tapered venters. With reference to reconstruction of ancestral state of outline traits on the molecular phylogeny, the hypothetical ancestor of cytheroidean ostracods is presumed to have had an average-shaped shell. Morphological plasticity of the shell outline was observed in many families. The phytal species living on tall seagrass appear to have evolved convergently with species from other habitats, acquiring slim shell outlines during the Cenozoic period. The present analysis also reveals the phylogenetic constraints on the morphological evolution of the Trachyleberididae in their adaptation to a burrowing habit.  © 2009 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2009, 97 , 810–821.

Unrelated clades of aquatic tetrapod have evolved a similar range of skull shapes, varying from longirostrine (elongate and narrow rostrum) to brevirostrine (short rostrum). However, it is unclear which aspects of organismal performance are associated with this convergence in the range of skull shapes. Furthermore, it is not known how fundamental anatomical differences between groups influence these relationships. Here we address this by examining the load bearing capabilities of the skulls of two of the most diverse groups of living aquatic tetrapod: crocodilians and odontocetes. We use finite element analysis to examine the abilities of different cranial morphologies to resist a range of biologically relevant feeding loads including biting, shaking and twisting. The results allow for form/function relationships to be compared and contrasted between the two groups. We find that cranial shape has similar influences on performance during biting, shaking or twisting load cases at the anterior tooth positions, e.g. brevirostrine species experienced less strain than longirostrine species. The pattern of this form/function relationship is similar for both crocodilians and odontocetes, despite their fundamentally different anatomies. However, when loading teeth at the posterior end or middle of the tooth row the results do not follow the same pattern. Behavioural differences in bite location plays a key role in determining functional abilities in aquatic tetrapod taxa.

Studies on fossil eggs and eggshells have been traditionally focused on analysis of microstructure and systematic classification, but few attempts have been made to examine the variability of eggshell characters. This work examines the variability of one diagnostic character, shape of the calcitic units, of some dinosaur eggshells by using outline shape analysis (elliptic Fourier analysis). The studied material belongs to five different oospecies of the parafamily Megaloolithidae Zhao, 1979. To test shape variation within and between oospecies, an analysis on 129 outlines was carried out and their variability was summarised by principal component analysis. We then tested if the shape of megaloolithid units changes according to size (i.e. allometry). A regression analysis between eggshell unit shape and two different size measurements (centroid size and eggshell thickness) showed that the thinnest eggshells (thickness ≤ 1 mm) have different shapes than thicker ones ( ≥ 2.5 mm). Our results stress that the variability in the shape of eggshell units in Megaloolithus oospecies is correlated to size (i.e. eggshell thickness), a phenomenon that should be then considered carefully when determining oospecies, since a single oospecies can show both a wide range of eggshell thickness and combined with different eggshell unit shapes.

Marsupial herbivores exhibit a wide variety of skull shapes and sizes to exploit different ecological niches. Several studies on teeth, dentaries, and jaw adductor muscles indicate that marsupial herbivores exhibit different specializations for grazing and browsing. No studies, however, have examined the skulls of marsupial herbivores to determine the relationship between stress and strain, and the evolution of skull shape. The relationship between skull morphology, biomechanical performance, and diet was tested by applying the finite element method to the skulls of four marsupial herbivores: the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus), koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor), and red kangaroo (Macropus rufus). It was hypothesized that grazers, requiring stronger skulls to process tougher food, would have higher biomechanical performance than browsers. This was true when comparing the koala and wallaby (browsers) to the wombat (a grazer). The cranial model of the wombat resulted in low stress and high mechanical efficiency in relation to a robust skull capable of generating high bite forces. However, the kangaroo, also a grazer, has evolved a very different strategy to process tough food. The cranium is much more gracile and has higher stress and lower mechanical efficiency, but they adopt a different method of processing food by having a curved tooth row to concentrate force in a smaller area and molar progression to remove worn teeth from the tooth row. Therefore, the position of the bite is crucial for the structural performance of the kangaroo skull, while it is not for the wombat which process food along the entire tooth row. In accordance with previous studies, the results from this study show the mammalian skull is optimized to resist forces generated during feeding. However, other factors, including the lifestyle of the animal and its environment, also affect selection for skull morphology to meet multiple functional demands. J. Split-line patterns are reported in skulls of five adult male baboons. While variations in pattern occur in all parts of the skull, these variations are relatively minor in the following regions: supraorbital, lateral orbital, medial orbital, nasal bones, zygomatico-alveolar crest, nasal opening, alveolar process of maxilla and mandible. Wide differences in pattern occur in these regions: infraorbital, zygomatic bone, body of maxilla, and frontal bone posterior to the supraorbital area. The major variability in split-line orientation indicates that oversimplified interpretations of the patterns in terms of (1) conformity to gross structure, or (2) direction of bone growth, are untenable. The variations do not contradict a functional interpretation in which mechanical forces and skull form interact to different degrees in different individuals, however. Skulls of a variety of primates are useful for functional analysis, because they have similar structural plans, but the differences are well outside the normal range of variation for a single species.

A new species of Acanthodasys (Gastrotricha, Macrodasyida, Thaumastodermatidae) is described from sublittoral sediments off the Atlantic coast of Florida. Acanthodasys paurocactussp. n. is a relatively small species (to 450 μm long) with a strap-shaped outline, a series of anterior, lateral, and ventrolateral adhesive tubes, paired caudal pedicles with posterior adhesive tubes, and a morphologically diverse cuticle. The cuticle contains both spined and unspined scales. Unspined scales are present in two general shapes: lanceolate and eye shaped, with some transitional shapes. All scales have a thickened rim and depressed central region; some scales of both shapes bear either one or more central bumps, a parallel ridge, or a perpendicular ridge that gives the appearance of a cross-shaped pattern under transmitted light. Spined scales are somewhat quadrangular in shape and bear uniancres to 15 μm long with a cross-shaped sectional profile. The new species is now one of five described species to possess both spined and spineless scales, and only one of two species to possess two types of spineless scales (the second species is an incompletely described specimen from Norway).

Trimeresurus (in its widest sense) is a very diverse and widespread radiation of Asian pitvipers, which has been subject to numerous taxonomic revisions, some of which have been based on characteristics of the skull. In order to evaluate the taxonomic utility of such characters, we conducted a comparison of the skulls of 57 specimens representing nine genera, and two currently unassigned species that are very closely related to each other. A canonical variate analysis reveals three distinct phenetic groups: the Protobothrops group, a group containing Ovophis monticola , ' Ovophis ' okinavensis , and ' Trimeresurus ' gracilis , and finally a group comprising the remaining species and characterized by considerable overlap between most genera with the exception of the monotypic Peltopelor and Himalayophis . Agreement between phenetic similarity based on skull characteristics and phylogenetic relationships based on molecular evidence varies between different groups: the morphological similarity of the skull of Protobothrops sieversorum to the other Protobothrops species is congruent with their recent synonymization while the phenetic similarity among the species within the second group does not reflect current molecular phylogenetic relationships and indicates that convergent or parallel evolution may be responsible for at least some of the phenetic similarity detected among skulls of the Asian pit vipers examined. A test of phylogenetic independence, however, indicates that there is still a significant phylogenetic signal that can be recovered from several skull characteristics. Thus, we conclude that skull morphology can contribute to an overall understanding of pitviper taxonomy, but that it would be unwise to rely on skull characteristics alone.

We describe a new species of mastodonsauroid temnospondyl from Algeria, Stanocephalosaurus amenasensis nov. sp., on the basis of two exquisite skulls from a Lagerstätte found in the lowermost formation of the Zarzaïtine Series, Illizi Basin, in the area of “La Reculée”, In Amenas region, Algeria. The new species is characterized by subtriangular nostrils with concave lateral borders; small orbits; postfrontals posteriorly very wide; very elongate parietals; smoothly concave posterior margin of the skull; ovoid anterior palatal vacuities; very posteriorly pointed choanae; oval interpterygoid fenestrae; and a short anterior extension of the cultriform process of the parasphenoid. S. amenasensis is different than the Algerian taxa previously erected by Lehman (1971)–“Parotosaurus lapparenti” and “Wellesaurus bussoni”–which we consider nomina dubia. It enlarges the distribution of the genus in northern Gondwana and supports the Early-Middle Triassic age of the lowermost formation of the Zarzaïtine Series. It also suggests that the local palaeoclimate was very seasonal and these aquatic amphibians died massively in a dewatering sebkha.

The skulls of ninety-six specimens of the temnospondyl Archegosaurus decheni from the Permian/Carboniferous of Germany, ranging in length from almost 20 to almost 280 mm, are used in a morphometric analysis of cranial ontogeny. A Cartesian transformation, a bivariate regression analysis, and a principal component analysis (PCA) reveal changes of general skull proportions and of particular skull roofing bones during growth. The preorbital part of the skull exhibits a much faster growth rate than the postorbital region, whereas the orbits exhibit a considerable decrease in relative size. The skull bones possess low allometry coefficients of growth in width, what leads to a proportionally much more slender skull than in most other temnospondyls, comparable only to other archegosaurids, the cochleosaurid Chenoprosopus, and longirostrine stereospondyls like Australerpeton and trematosaurids. Distinctly negative allometry of the width of the cheek region, where part of the adductor musculature originated, suggests a weaker bite in A. decheni than in temnospondyls with broad-parabolic skulls like Onchiodon and Sclerocephalus. Results from the analysis of skull growth in A. decheni offer a biological interpretation of the life habits of this animal as becoming increasingly more adaptated to piscivory during ontogeny. The continuous growth of the skull with a gradual shift in proportions supports, in conjunction with morphological data, the hypothesis that A. decheni did not undergo a metamorphosis.

Measurements of a large series of skulls of the Arctic wolf, Canis lupus arctos . have shown that since 1930 there has been an overall reduction in the size of the skulls, together with widening of the cranium, shortening of the facial region, and reduction in size of the teeth. This suggests that hybridization and subsequent introgression occurred with huskies ( Canis familiaris ) during the 1930s, which is consistent with historical accounts. Since 1950 there has been a reversion in skull morphology to a more 'wolf-like' form, suggesting that hybridization is no longer occurring.
The skull of a wolf/dog hybrid is intermediate in size between the skulls of wolves and huskies but its shape is allometrically dissimilar. Skulls of wolves from the period 1930–50 are moi-e similar to the skull of this hybrid than in the other time periods.
The skull of a male canid from a carcass collected on Ellesmere Island and presented to the Natural History Museum. London, in 1986 was at first thought to be from a wolf/dog hybrid but analyses of the measurements show that it is more likely to be from an Arctic wolf with severe abnormalities to the jaws.
