Temperature and Antarctic plankton community respiration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Antarctic plankton community respiration rates were determinedfrom in vitro changes in dissolved oxygen. Oxygen consumptionrates, measured at in situ temperatures between 0 and 6°C,were found to lie in the range 0.3–3.7 µmol O2 l–1per 24 h. Water samples were collected between East FalklandIsland and South Georgia, South Atlantic Ocean, and incubatedshipboard in the dark at up to 36 temperatures between –2and 14–C. A respiration rate at each temperature was thendetermined and used to calculate the temperature coefficient(Q10) of Antarctic planktonic community respiration from theArrhenius equation. Fourteen Q0 values lay in the range 1–3,with four further values >5. This range of temperature coefficientvalues for community respiration is comparable to the publishedrange of values for plankton photosynthesis. Frequency distributionsof temperature coefficients for the two processes show similarmodal Q105 of 2–3. Thus, this study does not lend supportto the hypothesis of a differential response of photosynthesisand community respiration to low temperature.  相似文献

Ingestion, respiration, and molting loss rates were measuredover the 3 – 29°C range in Neomysis intermedia. Weightspecific rates of these physiological processes ranged from2 to 140% body C day–1 for ingestion, from 2 to 15% bodyC day–1 for respiration, and from 0.1 to 5% body C day–1for molting loss. All weight-specific rates showed a logarithmicdecrease with a logarithmic increase in body weight, and a logarithmicincrease with a linear increase in temperature below 20 or 25°C.The effect of temperature, however, was different between thephysiological rates, with a large temperature dependency foringestion (Q10 = 2.6 –3.9) and molting loss (Q10 = 2.9– 3.6) and a moderate temperature dependency for respiration(Q10 = 1.9 – 2.1). Calculated assimilation efficiencychanged with body size, but was constant over the temperaturerange examined. Allocation of assimilated materials varied witha change in temperature, reflecting the different temperaturedependence between physiological processes. It was deduced thatthe strong temperature dependency of the growth rate in N. intermediaobserved in the previous studies resulted from the large temperatureeffect on ingestion and assimilation rates, superimposed bythe different allocation of assimilated materials. 1Present address: Department of Botany, University of Tokyo,Hongo, Tokyo 113, Japan  相似文献

Growth and dark respiration were measured in dense, miniatureswards of kikuyu grass grown at constant temperatures of 15,20, 25 and 30 °C. Total respiration over the first 12 hof darkness was very high and CO2 efflux per unit surface areavaried from 2.4 to 3.9 g CO2 m–2 h–1 at 15 and 30°C respectively. Such rates were consistent with the correspondinglyhigh net growth rates of 24 and 63 g d. wt m–2 d–1and the heavy yields of herbage. When plants were kept in thedark, CO2 efflux subsequently declined rapidly to a lower, constantrate which was taken to be the maintenance respiration rate. The half-life of the declining phase of respiration averaged10.9 and 6.0 h at 15 and 30 °C respectively, and was curvilinearlyrelated to the specific maintenance respiration rate (m). Therapid decline in respiration was consistent with the low concentrationsof total soluble carbohydrate and starch in the herbage. Valuesof m for lamina and top growth increased with temperature witha Q10 of 2.6 and 1.42 respectively, but m of stems alone wasnot affected by temperature. Using results from this study forkikuyu and from McCree (1974) for sorghum and white clover,it was noted that all three species have similar m when grownat temperatures which are near their respective optimums forgrowth. Maximum daily consumption was estimated for Mysis relicta fedad libitum rations of Daphnia pulex at 4,10,15 and 18°C.Gut-residence time was also evaluated for M.relicta fed clado-ceranprey at 4, 10 and 157deg;C. Mean daily consumption (g dry weightof Daphnia g–1 dry weight of Mysis day–1) rangedfrom 6% at 4%C to 12% at 10°. At 18°C, Mysis feedingrate declined to 9% day1. Mean, weight-adjusted consumptionrates exhibited a ‘dome-shaped’ response in relationto water temperature. Consumption rate was highest at 10°Cand lowest at 4°C. Estimated Q10 was more sensitive from4 to 10°C (Q10= 3) than from 10 to 15°C (Q10=1.2). Gut-residencetime for Mysis was inversely related to water temperature, implyingthat evacuation rate increases linearly with water temperature.Feeding and gut-evacuation rates become disassociated at watertemperatures >10°C. As water temperature increased above1°C, relative evacuation rate increased, whereas feedingrate declined. It is postulated that at higher water temperatures, disassociated feeding and gut-evacuation rates reduce the scopefor growth of vertically migrating Mysis and impose a physiologicalconstraint that isolates Mysis from warm, epilimnetic waterduring thermal stratification. 1Present address: Center for Aquatic Ecology, Illinois NaturalHistory Survey, Sam Parr Biological Station, 6401 Meacham Road,Kinmundy, IL 62854, USA  相似文献

A negative exponential relationship between temperature andboll maturation period (BMP), is hypothesized from publisheddata. A crucial experiment was undertaken to test this hypothesis.Six groups of cotton plants were placed under different temperatureregimes, half of these groups having a daily temperature amplitudeof 4 °C, the remainder of 10 °C. The resulting BMP valuesshowed good agreement with the hypothesis and a Q10 of 2.46–2.56was calculated. Since the Q10 for maintenance respiration isabout 2.2, the conversion efficiency of cotton bolls shouldincrease slightly with increasing temperature. However, themeasured increase of conversion efficiency with temperaturecannot be explained from reduced maintenance respiration aloneand this suggests a shift in boll composition as well. Bollswith a short BMP are produced at a lower cost per unit of maturedry matter than those having a long BMP.  相似文献

The effects of night-time temperature, leaf-to-air vapour pressuredeficit (VPD) and water stress on CO2 recycling in Bromeliahumilis Jacq. grown under two light and nitrogen regimes wereinvestigated. At night-time temperatures above 30°C, integratednet dark CO2 uptake was severely reduced and CO2 for malatesynthesis was mainly derived from dark respiration. At 35°C,up to 84% of the CO2 liberated by dark respiration was refixedinto malic acid. Below 30 °C only nitrogen deficient plantsshowed significant recycling. No significant differences wereobserved between high and low light grown plants in CO2 recycling.A doubling of leaf-to-air VPD from 7-46 Pa kPa–1 to 15.49Pa kPa–1 resulted in a 2- to 20-fold decrease in leafconductance and about 50 to 65% reduction in integrated darkCO2 uptake. However, about twice as much CO2 was recycled atthe higher VPD as in the lower. Ten days of water stress resultedin 80 to 100% recycling of respiratory CO2. Under high VPD andwater stress treatments, the amount of water potentially savedthrough recycling of CO2 reached 2- to 6-fold of the actualtranspiration. In general, nitrogen deficient plants had higherper cent recycling of respiratory CO2 in response to high night-timetemperature, increased VPD or water stress. The results emphasizethe ecological relevance of carbon recycling in CAM plants. Key words: Bromelia humilis, CAM, PPFD, dark respiration, temperature, VPD, water stress  相似文献

The effects of root age, temperature, and soil water statuson root hydraulic conductivity (LP) were investigated for twocactus species, Ferocactus acanthodes and Opuntia ficus-indica.The volumetric flux density of water was measured for excisedroot segments, either using negative hydrostatic pressures appliedto the proximal end or using reverse flow of water from theroot to the soil. For both species, LP at 20 ?C increased withroot age, average values reaching a maximum of 3.9 ? 10–7m s–1 MPa–1 for F. acanthodes and 5.2 ? 10–7m s–1 MPa–1 for O.ficus-indica at 11 to 17 weeksof age; LP subsequently declined with increasing root age forboth species. LP was maximal at a temperature of about 10 ?Cfor the youngest roots (1–3 weeks), this optimum shiftingto 40 ?C for 8-week-old roots of both species. For older roots(up to 1.5-years-old), LP increased with temperature from 0?C to 50 ?C, with a Q10 of 1.3 between 20 ?C and 30 ?C. At asoil water potential (soil) of –0.016 MPa, root LP wasindependent of the direction of water flow for both species.Depending on root age, LP declined 45- to 500-fold for F. acanthodesand 90- to 800-fold for O.ficus-indica as soil was reduced from–0.016 to –1.06 MPa, consistent with a rectifier-likebehaviour with respect to water movement between soil and roots.Incorporation of such responses into water uptake models shouldlead to a better understanding of root function. In whole filaments of Anabaena cylindrica dark nitrogen-fixingactivity (measured as acetylene reduction) and respiration increasedwith the light intensity of a fixed period of preillumination, saturating at ca. 10,000 lux. With saturating light during preillumination, the amount and duration of dark nitrogen-fixing activity increasedwith length of preillumination, but respiration declined rapidlyin the dark. At dark respiration rates below 250 nmol O2 uptake mg protein–1?h–1(State 1) no significant nitrogen-fixing activity is observed. From 250 to 550 nmol O2 uptake?mg protein–1?h–1(State 2), nitrogen-fixing activity depends on O2 uptake whileabove 550 nmol O2 uptake?mg protein–1?h–1 (State3), nitrogen-fixing activity no longer increases with furtherincrease in O2 uptake rate. Respiration losses in planktonic green algae cultivated in raceway ponds   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Rates of respiratory oxygen uptake were measured in darkenedsamples of green microalgae (Coelastrum sphaericum, Scenedesmusfalcatus) growing in raceway ponds under field conditions andindoors. The rates measured over 6–26h varied between1 and 1.5 and 8.25 µl O2 mg–1 h–1 and dependedon incubation, temperature, time in the dark, and on the temperatureand irradiance at which the algae were cultivated before. Q10values ranged from 1.43 to 1.68. Arrhenius relationships describedthe influence of temperature upon respiration rates below theoptimum temperature, even after many hours of incubation inthe dark. Respiration rates were lower after growth at optimaltemperature than after cultivation at other temperatures. Thelight history also influenced the rates, being high when thealgae were darkened after exposure to high irradiance and lowerafter weaker pre-illumination. For the algae under study theoverall loss during 12h of darkness was estimated to be 2–10%of the biomass prior to darkening. Higher losses are expectedfor natural conditions and stronger irradiances.  相似文献

Ten-day old kidney bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Shin-edogawa)were exposed to 2.0 and 4–0 parts 10–6 NO2, and0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 parts 10–6 O3 alone or in combinationfor 2, 4, and 7 d. The effects of these air pollutants wereexamined with respect to the growth, partitioning of assimilates, nitrogen uptake, soluble sugar content, and root respiration. Decreased dry matter production was significant with all treatmentsexcept 2.0 parts 10–6 NO2 and 0.1 parts 10–6 O3.Exposure to mixtures of the gases produced more severe suppressionof growth than exposure to the single gases. Root/shoot ratiowas significantly lowered at 7 d by the gas treatments otherthan 2.0 parts 10–6 NO2 and 0.1 parts 10–6 O3. Thetotal nitrogen content of plants was increased by all treatments;the higher percent of nitrogen found with O3 exposure will resultfrom the growth retardation which increases the concentrationof nitrogen in the plants because the absorption of nitrogenby roots was unaffected. The combination of O3 with NO2 significantlydecreased the assimilation of NO2 by the plants. The concentration of soluble sugars in roots was decreased bythe gas treatments. There was a strong positive correlationbetween soluble sugar content and dry weight of the roots harvestedat 7 d. Root respiration was relatively unchanged until 5 dand then decreased significantly at 7 d by 2.0 parts 10–6NO2 and 0–2 parts 10–6 O3. Retarded growth of theroots and the decreased root respiration may be due to diminishedtranslocation of sugars from leaves to roots caused by exposureto air pollutants. The uptake of soil nitrogen was not closelyrelated with root respiration in the case of O3 exposure. Key words: NO2, O3, Phaseolus vulgaris, Growth, Sugars, Root respiration  相似文献

Seeds of two lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L., cv. Meikoninginand cv. Grand Rapids) were hermetically stored with constantmoisture contents ranging between 3.6 and 17.9 per cent (freshweight basis) at constant temperatures ranging between 5 and75 °C. The decline with time in percentage germination andpercentage normal seedlings was determined for each storagetreatment. The data were fitted to an equation which containsthe constants: K1, the probit of the initial percentage germinationor normal seedlings; KE, a species constant; CW, the constantof a logarithmic moisture term; CH, the constant of a lineartemperature term and CQ, the constant of a quadratic temperatureterm. Regression analysis of data from storage periods up to5.5 years at temperatures of 5–75 °C and seed moisturecontents of 3.6–13.6 per cent yielded the following values:KE= 8.218, CW=4.797±0.163, CH=0.0489±0.0050 andCQ=0.000365±0.000056. Although this equation consistentlyprovided a better fit, simplified equations, assuming eithera log-linear relationship between seed longevity and temperature,or a log-linear relationship between seed longevity and bothmoisture content and temperature, accounted for more than 94per cent of the variation at the restricted temperature rangeof 5–40 °C. Longevity of the same seed lots at sub-zero temperatures (–5,–10 and –20 °C) was studied in separate tests.Freezing damage, resulting in abnormal seedlings in the germinationtest, occurred at –20 °C when the moisture contentof the seeds exceeded 12 per cent. No decline in percentagenormal seedlings was observed after a storage period of 18 monthsor longer at –20 °C, provided the seed moisture contentdid not exceed 9.5 per cent. For seeds stored at –5 and–10 °C with 9.6–12.5 per cent moisture content, the observed rate of decline of percentage normal seedlingswas adequately predicted by the viability equation, using theabove values for the constants. This suggests that for low moisturecontents the viability equation can be applied to estimate longevityat sub-zero temperatures. Respiratory activity and seasonal changes in carbohydrate contentof the storage organs of Rubus chamaemorus L. have been investigated.Leaf dark respiration rate increases in a non-linear mannerfrom 0·7 mg CO2 evolved dm–2 h–1 at 0 °Cto 4·6 rng CO2 evolved dm–2 hh–1 at 30 °C.Root and rhizome respiration rates increase from 1 µ1O2 uptake g–1 fresh weight h–1 at 0.7 ° C to10 µ10, uptake g–1 f. wt h–1 at 20 °C.Rhizome carbohydrate reserves decline from a September peakof 33 per cent alcohol insoluble d. wt to 16 per cent in May. The circumpolar distribution of R. chamaemorus is discussedin relation to the evidence presented here and in the precedingpaper of the series.  相似文献

Cultivated Agave mapisaga and A. salmiana can have an extremelyhigh above-ground dry-weight productivity of 40 Mg ha–1yr–1. To help understand the below-ground capabilitiesthat support the high above-ground productivity of these Crassulaceanacid metabolism plants, roots were studied in the laboratoryand in plantations near Mexico City. For approximately 15-year-oldplants, the lateral spread of roots from the plant base averaged1.3 m and the maximal root depth was 0.8 m, both considerablygreater than for desert succulents of the same age. Root andshoot growth occurred all year, although the increase in shootgrowth at the beginning of the wet season preceded the increasein growth of main roots. New lateral roots branching from themain roots were more common at the beginning of the wet season, which favoured water uptake with a minimal biomass investment, whereas growth of new main roots occurred later in the growingseason. The root: shoot dry weight ratio was extremely low, less than 0.07 for 6-year-old plants of both species, and decreasedwith plant age. The elongation rates of main roots and lateralroots were 10 to 17 mm d–1, higher than for various desertsucculents but similar to elongation rates for roots of highlyproductive C3 and C4 agronomic species. The respiration rateof attached main roots was 32 µmol CO2 evolved kg–1dry weight s–1 at 4 weeks of age, that of lateral rootswas about 70% higher, and both rates decreased with root age.Such respiration rates are 4- to 5-fold higher than for Agavedeserti, but similar to rates for C3 and C4 agronomic species. The root hydraulic conductivity had a maximal value of 3 x 10–7ms–1 MPa–1 at 4 weeks of age, similar to A. deserti. The radial hydraulic conductivity from the root surface to thexylem decreased and the axial conductivity along the xylem increasedwith root age, again similar to A. deserti. Thus, although rootsof A. mapisaga and A. salmiana had hydraulic properties perunit length similar to those of a desert agave, their highergrowth rates, their higher respiration rates, and the greatersoil volume explored by their roots than for various desertsucculents apparently helped support their high above-groundbiomass productivity Key words: Crassulacean acid metabolism, productivity, root elongation rate, root system, water uptake  相似文献

Lolium temulentum plants were grown at 20 °C, under an 8-hdaylength, in a controlled-environment chamber, and the kineticsof leaf expansion were observed by measuring the movement ofan optical grid attached to the fourth leaf. The leaf emerged23–24 d after sowing and was fully expanded 9–10d later. Extension rate was maximal between the second and fifthdays after emergence and declined markedly thereafter. Duringthe rapid growth phase the rate of elongation exhibited a distinctdiurnal rhythm, fluctuating between 1.9 to 2.3 mm h–1in the light period, and 1.3 to 1.7 mm h–1 in the dark.A circadian oscillation with a period of about 27 h was observedin leaves elongating in continuous darkness. When plants weretransferred to 5 °C soon after emergence of the fourth leafthere was an immediate reduction in rate of growth to about22 per cent of the rate at 20 °C: the Q10 for the mean elongationrate in the range 20–5 °C was 3.7. When plants weretransferred from 20 to 2 °C at fourth leaf emergence, meanextension rate declined to less than 5 per cent, correspondingto a Q10 in the range 5–2 °C of more than 300. Furthermore, growth at 2 °C was confined almost entirely to the darkphase of the photoperiod cycle. The responsive tissue was shownto be a small area of expanding leafless than 1.5 cm above theshoot apex and the possible mechanisms underlying low temperatureeffects in this region are discussed. Relationships between nitrate (NO-3) supply, uptake and assimilation, water uptake and the rate of mobilization of seed reserves wereexamined for the five main temperate cereals prior to emergencefrom the substrate. For all species, 21 d after sowing (DAS),residual seed dry weight (d.wt) decreased while shoot plus rootd.wt increased (15–30%) with increased applied NO-3concentrationfrom 0 to 5–20 mM . Nitrogen (N) uptake and assimilationwere as great with addition of 5 mM ammonium (NH+4) or 5 mMNO-3but NH+4did not affect the rate of mobilization of seedreserves. Chloride (Cl-) was similar to NO-3in its effect onmobilization of seed reserves of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).Increased rate of mobilization of seed reserves with additionalNO-3or Cl-was associated with increases in shoot, root and residualseed anion content, total seedling water and residual seed watercontent (% water) 21 DAS. Addition of NH+4did not affect totalseedling water or residual seed water content. For barley suppliedwith different concentrations of NO-3or mannitol, the rate ofmobilization of seed reserves was positively correlated (r >0.95)with total seedling water and residual seed water content. Therate of mobilization of seed reserves of barley was greaterfor high N content seed than for low N content seed. Seed watercontent was greater for high N seed than for low N seed, 2 DAS.Additional NO-3did not affect total seedling water or residualseed water content until 10–14 DAS. The effects of seedN and NO-3on mobilization of seed reserves were detected 10and 14 DAS, respectively. It is proposed that the increasedrate of mobilization of seed reserves of temperate cereals withadditional NO-3is due to increased water uptake by the seedlingwhile the seed N effect is due to increased water uptake bythe seed directly. Fully light-intercepting simulated swards of S24 perennial ryegrasswere exposed to contrasting environmental conditions in a growthroom for 4 days. Half experienced 20 h days of 120 Wm–2(400–700. nm) and 5 °C, and came to have a WSC (watersoluble carbohydrate) content of 235 mg g–1 and half 4h days of 20 Wm–2 and 25 °C leading to a WSC of 25mg g–1. Their rates of CO2 efflux were monitored at anumber of temperatures during an 8 h dark period; half experiencedincreasing (5–30 °C) and half decreasing (30–5°C) temperatures. The ‘high’ WSC swards hadrespiration rates of 3.7 mg CO2 g–1 (d. wt) h–1at 15 °C, and the ‘low’ swards 0.8 mg CO2 g–1h–1. The order in which the temperatures were experiencedwas immaterial. Even the ‘low’ WSC swards showedno evidence of a respiratory decline during the dark periodthat could be attributed to substrate shortage. The relationshipbetween temperature and CO2 efflux was best represented by logisticcurves. Even so, a Q10 of 2 fitted the data reasonably well,at least up to 20 °C, and has practical advantages wheninterpolating estimated between measured values of respirationin the construction of a carbon balance sheet. The cell quotas of microcystin (Qmcyst), protein (Qprot), chlorophylla (Qchloro) and carbohydrate (Qcarbo), as well as the net productionrates of these parameters, were determined during the exponentialand stationary phases in nine batch cultures of Microcystisaeruginosa (CYA 228) at light regimes from 33 to 53 µmolphotons m–2 s–1. The following results were obtained.(i) A parallel pattern was found in the changes of Qmcyst, Qprot,Qchloro and Qcarbo during the entire growth cycle and significantcorrelations were recorded between Qmcyst and Qprot, Qchloroand Qcarbo. (ii) The net microcystin production rate (µmcyst)was positively correlated with the specific cell division rate(µc), the chlorophyll production rate (µchloro)and the protein production rate. (iii) A significant inverselinear relationship was found between µc and Qmcyst, i.e.cultures with a positive µc had a Qmcyst between 110 and400 fg microcystin cell–1, while declining cultures hadQmcyst values >400 fg microcystin cell–1. Maximum variationin Qmcyst within cultures was 3.5-fold. Collectively, the resultsshow that cells produced microcystin at rates approximatingthose needed to replace losses to daughter cells during divisionand that microcystin was produced in a similar way to proteinand chlorophyll, indicating a constitutive microcystin production.  相似文献

Various plant and environmental factors influence the hydraulicproperties for roots, which were examined using negative hydrostaticpressures applied to the proximal ends of individual excisedroots of a common succulent perennial from the Sonoran Desert,Agave deserti Engelm. The root hydraulic conductivity, Lp, increasedsubstantially with temperature, the approximately 4-fold increasefrom 0.5°C to 40°C representing a Q10 of 1.45. Suchvariations in Lp with temperature must be taken into accountwhen modelling water uptake, as soil temperatures in the rootzone of such a shallow-rooted species vary substantially bothdaily and seasonally. At 20°C, Lp was 2.3 x 10–7 ms{macron}1MPa{macron}1for 3-week-old roots, decreasing to abouthalf this value at 10 weeks and then becoming approximatelyhalved again at 6 months. For a given root age, Lp for rainroots that are induced by watering as lateral branches on theestablished roots (which arise from the stem base) was aboutthe same as Lp for established roots. Hence, the conventionalbelief that rain roots have a higher Lp than do establishedroots is more a reflection of root age, as the rain roots tendto be shed following drought and thus on average are much youngerthan are established roots. Unlike previous measurements onroot respiration, lowering the gas-phase oxygen concentrationfrom 21% to 0% or raising the carbon dioxide concentration from0.1% to 2% had no detectable effect on Lp for rain roots andestablished roots. Lp for rain roots and established roots wasdecreased by an average of 11% and 35% by lowering the soilwater potential from wet conditions (soil=0 kPa) to {macron}40kPa and {macron}80 kPa, respectively. Such decreases in Lp mayreflect reduced water contact between soil particles and theroot surface and should be taken into account when predictingwater uptake by A. deserti. Root growth in chickpea (Cicer arietinum) has been studied fromthe early vegetative phase to the reproductive stage in orderto elucidate its growth and maintenance respiration and to quantifythe translocation of assimilates from shoot to root. A carbonbalance has been drawn for this purpose using the growth andrespiration data. The increase in the sieve tube cross-sectionalarea was also followed simultaneously. Plants growing in a nutrient culture medium were studied todetermine the relative growth rate (RGR) 5–60 d aftergermination. RGR declined from 113 to 41 mg d–1 g–1during the measurement period. Simultaneous with the RGR analysis, respiration rate was also measured using an oxygen electrode. The respiration rate declined as the plants aged and a drasticreduction was recorded following anthesis. The relationshipbetween RGR and respiration rate was used to extrapolate themaintenance respiration (m) and growth respiration (1/YEG).The respiration quotient (r.q.) of the roots was 1.2 and theQ10 in the range 20–25 °C was 2·2. A carbon balance for the roots was constructed by subtractingthe carbon lost during respiration from that gained during growth. The roots were found to respire no less than 80% of the carbontranslocated. The increase in the cross-sectional area composed of sieve tubeswas measured near the root-shoot junction as the plants grew.Chickpea has storied sieve plates which simplifies these measurements.Their cross-sectional area increased during growth mainly becauseof an increase in sieve tube number. The diameter of individualsieve tubes remained constant. Specific mass transfer (SMT) values for seive tubes into theroots have been computed during various stages of growth. SMTvalues were relatively constant before anthesis (approx. 6·5g h–1 cm–2), but decreased following anthesis. Wedid not evaluate possible retranslocation from roots: any suchretranslocation would have the effect of increasing our SMTvalues. Acclimation of NO3 transport fluxes (influx, efflux)in roots of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. cv. Bien venu) andtheir sensitivity to growth at low root temperature was studiedin relation to external NO3 supply, defined by constantconcentrations ranging from sub- to supra-optimal with respectto plant growth rate. Plants were grown from seed in flowingnutrient solutions containing 250 mmol m–3 NO3at 17°C for 20d, and solution temperature in half the cultureunits was then lowered decrementally over 3 d to 7°C. Threedays later plants were supplied with NO3 at 1, 10, 100or 1000 mmol m–3 maintained for 18 d. Dry matter productionwas decreased more by low root zone temperature than low [NO3]e. Root specific growth rates were inversely related to [NO3]eand shoot:root ratios increased with time at [NO3]e between10–1000 mmol m–3. Net uptake of NO3 at 17°Cwas twice that at 7°C, and at both temperatures it doubledwith increasing [NO3]e between 1–10 mmol m–3with further small increases at higher [NO3]e. Mean unitabsorption rates of NO3 between 0–6 d and 6–14d were linearly related (r2 of 0.79–0.99) to log10[NO].Steady-state Q10 (7–17°C) for uptake between 0–6d were 0.91, 1.62, 1.27, and 1.10, respectively, at [NO3]eof 1, 10, 100, and 1000 mmol m–3, compared with correspondingvalues of 0.98, 1.38, 1.68, and 1.89 between 6–14 d. Thedata indicated that net uptake rates at 7 and 17°C divergedover time at high [NO3]e. Short-term uptake rates from1 mol m–3 NO3 measured at 17°C were higherin plants grown with roots at 7°C than at 17°C; for7°C plants there was a strong inverse linear relationship(r2=0.94) between uptake rate and treatment log10 [NO3]ewhilst rates in 17°C plants were independent of prior [NO3]e. Rates of NO3 influx and efflux under different steady-stateconditions of NO3 supply and root temperature were calculatedfrom dilution of 15N added to culture solutions. Efflux wassubstantial relative to net uptake in all treatments, and wasinversely related to [NO3]e at 17°C but not at 7°C.Ratios of influx: efflux ranged from 1.6–2.9 at 17°Cand 1.3–1.8 at 7°C, indicating the proportionatelygreater impact of efflux at low root temperature. Ratios ofefflux: net uptake were 0.53–1.56 at 17°C and 1.21–3.58at 7°C. The apparent sensitivities of influx and effluxto steady-state root temperature varied with [NO3]e.Both fluxes were higher at 17°C than 7°C in the presenceof 100–1000 mmol m–3 NO3 but the trend wasreversed at 1–10 mmol m–3 NO. Concentrations oftotal N measured in xylem exudate were at least 2-fold higherat 7°C compared with 17°C, attributable mainly to higherconcentrations of NO3 glutamine and proline. The resultsare discussed in terms of acclimatory and other responses shownby the NO3 transport system under conditions of limitingNO3 supply and low root temperature. Key words: Brassica napus, nitrate supply, efflux, influx, root temperature, xylem exudate  相似文献
