Haasgat is a fossil-bearing cave site that has yielded 83 craniodental fossils of early Papio. All of the Haasgat cave baboon fossil collection may be identified as Papio angusticeps. The Haasgat fossils of P. angusticepsextend the previously known size range of the species as identified at other sites. The concordance of this and other fauna
with that of Kromdraai suggest that Haasgat probably dates to the terminal Pliocene. We hypothesize that the Haasgat baboons
and associated fauna were accumulated by versatile predators operating in a cave in a montane forest environment with savannah
or open woodland nearby. 相似文献

The fatal kidnapping of a 5-day-old baboon (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, is described. Although pulling and rough handling of primate infants by nonmothers are frequently observed, records of fatal intragroup kidnappings are rare. In the instance described here, the mother, a healthy, primiparous female, did not retrieve the infant from the kidnapper, a higher-ranking juvenile female of the same group, until he died 3 days later, presumably from starvation or dehydration. This incident is compared with other fatal intragroup kidnappings in nonhuman primates and related to adaptive interpretations. 相似文献

Three abortions and the death of a vigorous infant occurred in a baboon (Papio cynocephalus) group in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, within the two weeks following the immigration of an aggressive adult male. The immigrant male attained top-ranking dominance status in the group prior to these events. Circumstantial observations suggest that the reproductive losses were related to persistent intense aggression from the immigrant adult male. In the past ten years, only three other miscarriages have occurred in Amboseli. Inducement of abortion is discussed as a reproductive tactic that may be available to males of mammalian species whose life histories favor the evolution of infant-killing by males. 相似文献

Maternal condition during pregnancy is known to influence fetal viability. Recently, primatologists have suggested that certain characteristics of the fetus may influence maternal condition as well. For example, among captive pigtailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina) mothers of female infants may be at greater risk of injury during their pregnancies than mothers of male infants. Analysis of the rates of aggression, submission, competition, and wounding among free-ranging pregnant baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park generally fail to support these findings, but several other factors such as maternal dominance rank, environmental conditions during pregnancy, maternal parity, and fetal age correlate with aggression, submission, competition, and injuries sustained by pregnant female baboons. 相似文献

Recently,Yoshikawa andDeguchi (1992) reported an unusually high frequency (40%) of two-rooted maxillary canines inMacaca fuscata females and a complete absence of this trait in males. In the present study, canine root development and morphology was examined
using cephalographs taken on 50 male and 50 femaleMacaca nemestrina, and 20 male and 20 femalePapio cynocephalus for comparison with the Japanese macaque. The results showed no double-rooted canines present in either species in the upper
or lower canines. This supports the general rule that, among primates, canines possess a single-root. It was further suggested
that the two-rooted canines inM. fuscata may be the result of the founder effect, i.e. that the genes for this trait may have been carried by the initial populations
when they arrived on the islands sometime during the middle to late Pleistocene. 相似文献

We screened fecal samples from 3 groups of wild-living baboons (Papio cynocephalus and P. anubis), involved in longitudinal behavioral studies, for evidence of gastrointestinal parasites. The two objectives of the study were: 1) to compare parasites from two of the groups with different foraging behavior from the same area and 2) to obtain fecal parasitic data on 3 groups of baboons to provide baseline reference data. We sampled individual baboons opportunistically from Lodge and Hook's groups, Amboseli National Park and from Mpala Group, Mpala Wildlife Research Centre, Kenya. Lodge Group baboons supplemented foraging on wild foods by daily foraging in human-source refuse, whereas Hook's and Mpala groups did not. We collected fecal samples from 55, 30 and 42 individuals in Hook's, Lodge and Mpala groups, respectively, and processed them via ether sedimentation. We identified strongylids, Streptopharagus sp., Physaloptera sp., Trichuris sp., Enterobius sp., and Strongyloides sp., in the feces, but no parasite directly attributable to exposure to people. Garbage- and wild-feeding Amboseli baboons differed in the prevalence of Streptopharagus sp., Physaloptera sp. and Trichuris sp. 相似文献

We aimed to determine taste preference thresholds for 5 food-associated sugars in Papio hamadryas anubis. In a 2-bottle preference test of brief duration (2 min) 4 subadult baboons significantly preferred concentrations as low as 10 mM sucrose, 20 mM fructose, lactose, and maltose, and 25 mM glucose over tap water. Presentation of suprathreshold sugar solutions led to marked concentration-dependent polydipsia. The results show that baboons are among the most sugar-sensitive nonhuman primates tested so far and, thus, support the assumption that Papio hamadryas anubis may use sweetness as a criterion for food selection. 相似文献

This report describes an infanticide and two attacks of an infant and a juvenile by a natal adult male in a troop of chacma
baboons (Papio ursinus). The infanticidal male had become the dominant male in his troop five months before the infanticide suggesting that a trigger
for infanticidal behavior is a rise in rank to dominant status. 相似文献

One hundred twenty-two fecal samples were collected from two troops of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus),living in montane and subalpine grassland, trespectively. These were examined for the presence of gastrointestinal parasites.
Five protozoan, six nematode, and two cestode species were identified. Identifications were based on the morphology of cysts
in the case of Protozoaand of eggs in the case of helminths. Strongyle nematodes were tentatively identified on egg size ranges and larval characteristics. 相似文献

We compared the gastrointestinal parasites of the baboon,Papio cynocephalus ursinus, living in montane (altitude, >1800 m) and coastal lowland (altitude, 100–200 m) habitats in Natal, South Africa, using fecal analysis. While the montane animals harbored a smaller number of species, helminth egg-output rates were higher in them than in the lowland animals. The decrease in parasite diversity with increasing altitude was expected, but the difference in helminth egg output was not. It may be due to a combination of food shortage, which characterizes the montane environment, especially at the end of winter, and the high proportion of soil-contaminated items in the diets of the montane animals. 相似文献

Female Reproductive Parameters of Tana River Yellow Baboons 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We describe the female reproductive parameters of yellow baboons at the Tana River National Primate Reserve, Kenya. We present data on menarche, cycle length, pregnancy, birth, postpartum amenorrhea, interbirth interval, and infant survival. We also briefly compare our data to those reported for yellow baboon females at the Amboseli Reserve, Kenya. Our results indicate statistically significant differences in some of these reproductive parameters between the two sites. 相似文献

We used a cross-sectional sample to compare ontogenetic trajectories in the concentrations of monoamine neurotransmitter metabolites
in cerebrospinal fluid of wild anubis (Papio anubis, n = 49) and hamadryas (P. hamadryas, n = 54) baboons to test the prediction that they would differ, especially in males, in association with their distinct behavioral
ontogenies. Values of all 3 metabolites [3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), the norepinephrine metabolite; 5-hydroxyindoleacetic
acid (5-HIAA), the serotonin metabolite; and homovanillic acid (HVA), the dopamine metabolite] declined consistently with
dentally-calibrated maturation, and few taxon-related differences were apparent among juveniles. Adult females were too few
for adequate comparison, but a discriminant function suggested that they might differ by taxon. Adult males of the 2 species
differed strikingly from juveniles and from each other. Contrary to our initial hypothesis, adult male anubis had significantly
lower HVA and MHPG, and higher 5-HIAA levels, than predicted from the overall, age-related trend, and MHPG continued to decline
with age among adults. As young adults, male hamadryas had low 5-HIAA and a high HVA/5-HIAA ratio, while older males [normatively
one-male unit (OMU) leaders] showed a reversal in the trend, with 5-HIAA rising and the HVA/5-HIAA ratio tending to fall.
We speculate that the results are related to the dispersing and philopatric ontogenies of anubis and hamadryas males, respectively.
Adult male anubis, whose fitness depends on building social networks with nonkin, have high relative serotonin activity, commonly
associated with greater social circumspection and skill. Young adult male hamadryas, living among agnatic kin and mating opportunistically,
exhibit low 5-HIAA levels, generally associated with impulsivity and social irresponsibility. This reverses as a male approaches
the age at which he is normatively the leader of a one-male unit (OMU), and his fitness depends on his maintaining stable
relationships with other leaders and with females.

Repeated censuses of a population of yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, revealed a decrease from over 2,500 animals in 1963–1964 to 123 individuals in 1979, or from a density of about 73 to 1.8 baboons per km2 over a 15-year period. Median group size decreased from 43 in 1964 to 27 in 1979. The largest and smallest groups declined the most; groups near the median have maintained fairly stable size and age distributions. The population seemed to have stabilized by 1983 at approximately 150 animals in six groups (median group size 28; density 2.2/km2). Although baboon population and group size appeared to be stable during 1963–1964, the age distribution and demographic parameters (age-specific mortality and natality for one social group) during that year indicate that the population decline had already started. The rate of population decline was greatest in the 1964–1969 period and remained appreciable during the next 5 years. The decline of the baboon population was paralleled by that of other Amboseli savannah woodland mammalian species and took place during a period of very high mortality of fever trees (Acacia xanthophloea) and extensive invasion of the area by halophytes, a transition brought on by rising ground water and consequent elevation of the soil salinity zone. In this and several other primate populations, mortality of infants and juveniles appears to be the demographic variable most sensitive to environmental change. 相似文献

This report describes thermoregulatory behavior of free-ranging yellow baboons (Papio cynocephalus) in Amboseli, Kenya. While resting in trees during early morning hours, baboons are directly exposed to thermal effects of
wind and sun. We hypothesized that these animals would respond to microclimatic changes by altering their posture and body
orientatio so as to minimize thermal stress. The results of this study indicate that air temperature, solar radiation, and
wind velocity interact in their effect on behavior as predicted by this hypothesis. Specifically, the most salient cue for
trunk orientation choice is wind direction, while posture is primarily influenced by air temperature. In sum, our results
clearly demonstrate that when baboons are unable to minimize thermal stress by selecting a more favorable microenvironment,
they do so by altering their posture. 相似文献

A method is presented for measuring the location of individuals with respect to the center or perimeter of a primate group.
The method estimates an individual’s domain of danger: the area in which a hidden predator is closer to the individual than
to other group members (cf. Hamilton, 1971). A domain is determined by the directions and distances of particular neighbors
from a given individual. Animals at peripheral locations have relatively large domains, whereas animals at central locations
have relatively small domains. Domains of danger were sampled for members of two groups of chacma baboons (Papio ursinus)in northern Botswana, to test for nonrandom spatial patterns throughout the day. Females with infants had significantly smaller
domains than did females without infants. Domains also were correlated with social ranks of females;high-ranking females had smaller domains than did low-ranking females, possibly because high-ranking females were more likely
to have infant offspring. For adult males, however, domain sizes were not significantly correlated with social ranks. Immigration status of adult males, rather than social rank,
better accounted for spatial positioning. 相似文献

The behavioral ecology of mountain baboons, Papio ursinus, cuts across the traditional dichotomy between savannah and desert baboons, providing fresh opportunities to examine socioecological
relationships. Mountain baboons were studied at a site where covariation in altitude and group size helps to clarify the influence
of ecology on social behavior. One-male groups and lone males were regularly found in the highest-altitude zones. In encounters
with multimale groups, a one-male group retreated; the group’s single male attacked his females, herding them far away from
the multimale group. The male himself then approached and watched (and often loud-called at) this group. In a two-male group,
the younger male herded the females, while the older sometimes defended the group. One-male groups did not show regular, stable
aggregations, but two such groups seasonally coordinated their ranging “in tandem.” Ecological explanations for these behaviors
and their relationship to the behavior of hamadryas baboons are evaluated, and a new theory of the origin of one-male groups
in baboons is developed. 相似文献

Epidemiological studies were conducted in the Lake Langano area in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia to determine the occurrence of schistosomiasis and assess factors involved in its transmission. Microscopic examination of faecal specimens from free ranging Papio anubis (anubis baboon) troops from Bishan Gari and Burka Dita forest reserves revealed Schistosoma mansoni eggs with a prevalence of 12.1% (11/91) and 26.2%(34/130), respectively. The eggs were viable as confirmed by miracidial hatching and infectivity tests. Out of the total 12 communities (three schools, five villages and one herdsmen community) surveyed for schistosomiasis around Lake Langano, individuals excreting S. mansoni eggs were found in nine communities with prevalence of infection ranging from 1.4 to 43%. The intensity of infection ranged from 24 EPG (eggs per gram of faeces) to 243 EPG. Excretion of viable eggs by the baboons indicate that they play a role in maintenance of S. mansoni infection in the locality. The detection of S. mansoni eggs in young children, collection of cercarial-infected Biomphalaria pfeifferi in water bodies, and establishment of S. mansoni infection in lab-bred mice have confirmed establishment of transmission foci in Kime area, south-east of Lake Langano. However, the lake itself does not seem to support transmission of schistosomiasis since no snails were found along the shore of the Lake. Further investigations are indicated to fully elucidate the role baboons play in the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in the Rift Valley of Ethiopia. The risk of introduction of water-based development projects in these new endemic foci in relation to S. mansoni infection in the baboons is discussed. 相似文献

Though belonging to genera that have been distinct for several million years, gelada and common baboons—Theropithecus gelada and Papio hamadryas sensu lato, respectively—interbreed occasionally, even in the wild. A female hamadryas at Bihere Tsige Park, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, apparently favored a gelada male over eligible conspecifics and produced several offspring with him. The F
1
hybrids were large but developmentally normal. In skull and tooth form, and to a lesser extent in postcranial proportions, they were intermediate between the parental forms but lacked most of their parents' derived, (sub)species-specific epigamic characters. A female infant born to a subadult F

was sired by a hamadryas. The backcross infant appeared normal and was still flourishing at about 2.5 years. Though perhaps impeded by natural selection against poorly adapted hybrids, theoretically interspecific hybridization could exceed mutation as a source of novel, preadapted genes in the wild. 相似文献

We investigated the mechanism of alliance formation among adult male savanna baboons by comparing the characteristics of males
that formed coalitions frequently with males that never or seldom took part in coalitions. We observed three groups: two of Papio cynocephalus cynocephalusin Amboseli National Park, Kenya, and one of P. c. anubisin the vicinity of Gilgil, Kenya. We considered four hypotheses: (1) Males must be familiar with each other, (2) males must
have an affinitive bond, (3) males must have more than average experience, and (4) the combined fighting ability of the coalition
partners relative to the fighting ability of their opponent determines the likelihood that a coalition is formed. We conclude
that relative fighting ability forms the key factor in coalition formation. High- ranking males do not form coalitions often,
since they hardly need them. Low- ranking males rarefy form coalitions, since they cannot form effective coalitions among
themselves. Affinity (“friendship”) may play a role as an additional factor. The relation of coalition formation with age
and period of residence, which was found in several studies, can be explained largely by the correlation between these parameters
and fighting ability. 相似文献
