In Craseomys rufocanus and Craseomys rex, the age-related and species differences in thickness and microstructure of the first lower molars (ml) have been identified and studied. The results suggest that the enamel dimensional and microstructural features may serve as additional indicators of the vole tooth evolutionary stage within a single phyletic lineage.  相似文献

Fossil evidence of complete sequences of dental ontogeny in extinct mammals is rare but contains valuable information on the animal’s physiology, life history, and individual age. Here, we analyzed an exceptionally high number of juvenile dentaries at different developmental stages including highly fragile tooth germs of the extinct rhinoceros Prosantorhinus germanicus from the Miocene fossil lagerstätte Sandelzhausen in Germany. We used dental wear stages, eruption stages, and tooth germ development in order to reconstruct the tooth replacement pattern for P. germanicus. The results allow for the distinction of 11 dental eruption stages and document a tooth eruption sequence of (d2, d3), (d1, d4), m1, m2, p2, p3, p4, m3; a pattern identical to that reported for the extant African rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis. Moreover, our findings indicate that P. germanicus falls into the life history category of slow-growing, long-living mammals. The dental eruption stages of the fossil rhinoceros were correlated with data of living rhinoceroses in order to gain insight into the age-at-death distribution of P. germanicus at Sandelzhausen. The juvenile mortality profile of P. germanicus shows a trend of selective mortality at an inferred age range of about 3 months to 3 years. As this age range represents a life phase of increased natural risk of mortality, our findings indicate a gradual accumulation of corpses (attritional fossil assemblage). This result supports the interpretation of a taphocenosis found at the Sandelzhausen fossil site.  相似文献

The European Miocene records a wide diversity of hyaenid ecomorphotypes represented by multiple genera. Among these, Hyaenictis Gaudry, 1861, is one of the least known. This genus includes four species from the late Miocene and Pliocene of the Old World, but in Europe Hyaenictis is only represented by two species, recorded by scarce and fragmentary remains: Hyaenictis graeca Gaudry, 1861, from Pikermi (MN12; Greece) and Hyaenictis almerai Villalta Comella and Crusafont Pairó, 1948, from Sant Miquel de Toudell (MN10; Vallès-Penedès Basin, NE Iberia). Here, we describe a new skull of Hyaenictis aff. almerai from the Vallès-Penedès site of Ronda Oest Sabadell Sector D (MN10), representing the most complete European specimen of the genus. In the presence of m2 and virtual lack of m1 metaconid, the described cranium more closely resembles Hyaenictis rather than any other medium- to large-sized European hyaenid. However, the new skull does not fit well with previously known Hyaenictis species, more closely resembling the bone-cracking Adcrocuta Kretzoi, 1938, in the development of premolar accessory cuspids and the possession of relatively broad cheek teeth. These and other features (strong mandibular muscular insertions and enamel microstructure) denote more durophagous adaptations than previously documented in Hyaenictis (considered a cursorial/dog-like hyaena), and favor the inclusion of H. aff. almerai in the transitional bone-cracking hyaenid ecomorphotype.  相似文献

The basal macronarian genus Camarasaurus was the most common sauropod in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of North America and is known from several complete and partial skeletons. The specimen used for this study is Camarasaurus sp. SMA 0002 from the Sauriermuseum Aathal, Switzerland. This specimen was found in the Howe-Stephens Quarry, Bighorn Basin, WY, USA. In this study, the dental morphology, characterized by the spatulate, broad-crowned teeth, the tooth replacement pattern, and the function of the dentition and its implications for food intake is described. Features such as the absence of denticles, the wrinkled pattern of the enamel, and the occurrence of large wear facets on older teeth are characteristic for Camarasaurus sp. A slab of sediment with soft tissue impressions ranging up to the middle part of the crown suggests the presence of a gingival soft tissue structure partially covering the teeth. The wrinkled enamel on the crown of the teeth of Camarasaurus sp. and other sauropods is interpreted as indication of this cover of gingival connective tissue. In addition, there possibly was a keratinous beak, which together with the gingiva held the teeth in the jaw and provided stability for teeth in which the root is almost completely resorbed.  相似文献

Two new unequivocal stagodontids, Fumodelphodon pulveris, gen. et. sp. nov., and Hoodootherium praeceps, gen. et. sp. nov., are described from the Turonian (~92 Ma) Smoky Hollow Member of the Straight Cliffs Formation, of southern Utah, USA. Mammals from this time period are poorly represented; the recovery of these two large stagodontids demonstrates the early emergence of faunal elements mostly associated with the later Cretaceous. These taxa represent the earliest stagodontids with crushing premolars (Fumodelphodon) and sectorial premolars (Hoodootherium), morphologically similar to the well-known stagodontids Didelphodon and Eodelphis, respectively. The similar morphologies suggest that these two new genera may be early members of later Cretaceous stagodontid clades, implying a ~ 7 Ma ghost lineage leading to Eodelphis and a ~ 15 Ma ghost lineage to Didelphodon. A reexamination of stagodontid characters suggests a basal placement of Pariadens within Stagodontidae, contrary to some recent studies. The discovery of two new stagodontids bearing lower molars morphologically similar to, but premolars distinct from, Eodelphis highlights the importance of the specialized premolar morphology for resolving the relationships between genera within Stagodontidae.  相似文献

Bone morphogenetic protein 1 (BMP1) and tolloid-like 1 (TLL1) belong to the BMP1/tolloid-like proteinase family, which cleaves secretory proteins. The constitutive deletion of the Bmp1 or Tll1 genes causes perinatal or embryonic lethality in mice. In this study, we first studied the β-galactosidase activity in mice in which an IRES-lacZ-Neo cassette was inserted in the intron of either the Bmp1 or the Tll1 gene; the β-galactosidase activities were used to reflect the expression of endogenous Bmp1 and Tll1, respectively. Our X-gal staining results showed that the odontoblasts in the tooth and cells in the periodontal ligament express both Bmp1 and Tll1. We then created Bmp1 flox/flox and Tll1 flox/flox mice by removing the IRES-lacZ-Neo cassette. By breeding 2.3 kb Col1a1-Cre mice with the Bmp1 flox/flox and Tll1 flox/flox mice, we further generated Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice in which both Bmp1 and Tll1 were inactivated in the Type I collagen-expressing cells. We employed X-ray radiography, histology and immunohistochemistry approaches to characterize the Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice. Our results showed that the molars of the Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice had wider predentin, thinner dentin and larger pulp chambers than those of the normal controls. The dentinal tubules of the molars in the Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice appeared disorganized. The level of dentin sialophosphoprotein in the molars of the 6-week-old Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice was lower than in the normal controls. The periodontal ligaments of the Col1a1-Cre;Bmp1 flox/flox ;Tll1 flox/flox mice were disorganized and had less fibrillin-1. Our findings indicate that the proteinases encoded by Bmp1 and Tll1 genes play essential roles in the development and maintenance of mouse dentin and periodontal ligaments.  相似文献

All materials, including upper and lower jaw fragments and isolated teeth, of two closely related species of the stem placental mammal Prokennalestes, P. minor Kielan-Jaworowska et Dashzeveg, 1989 (258 specimens) and P. trofimovi Kielan-Jaworowska et Dashzeveg, 1989 (251 specimens), from the type locality of Khovoor (Early Cretaceous of Mongolia) are described. These extensive materials allow for the first time the study of morphological and size variability in an Early Cretaceous mammal. Prokennalestes can be diagnosed by the dental formula I?/4, C1/1, P4–5/5, M3/3, presence of the Meckelian groove, the mandibular foramen positioned dorsally on a prominent longitudinal ridge, presence of the masseteric foramen, double-rooted and premolariform lower canine, submolariform P5 with a large protocone and minute metacone, presence of the preparastyle, cusplike postmetacrista, and cusplike conules with incipient conular cristae on the upper molars, premolariform p5, the protoconid distinctly higher than the metaconid, the paraconid and metaconid connate at the base, transverse protocristid, and presence of distal metacristid on the lower molars. Two Prokennalestes species are reliably distinguished by the tooth dimensions (P. minor is smaller by 20%), the position of the infraorbital foramen (under P4 in P. minor and between P4 and P5 or under P5 in P. trofimovi), the presence of protoconal swelling on P4 (usually absent in P. minor and usually present in P. trofimovi), the ectocingulum extension in M3 (longer in P. minor), position of the posterior end of the mandibular symphysis (under p2 in P. minor, under p2–p3 in P. trofimovi), and by the position of the posterior mental foramen (under p4 in P. minor and under p5 in P. trofimovi). Taking into account considerable morphological differences between the two samples, they are regarded as different species rather than sexual morphs of the same species. Prokennalestes is a basal eutherian mammal similar in phylogenetic position to other stem placentals (Eomaia, Murtoilestes, Bobolestes, Aspanlestes). A more exact phylogenetic position of Prokennalestes can be established based on rigorous phylogenetic analysis including a large set of known stem therian and stem placental taxa.  相似文献

The new Irano-Turanian subgenus, Metoporaphodius subgen. n., is erected in Aphodius Helw. for A. plustschewskii D. Kosh. (type species) and A. baghlanicus Frolov. The males of Metoporaphodius subgen. n. are distinguished by the presence of a comb of dense setae on hind tibia and by the parameres with spatulate projections. The 3rd instar larva of A. plustschewskii has 2 rows of large flattened spinules on anal stemite (with 10-12 spinules in a row), and 3 spinules on the lacinial apex.  相似文献

The first skull of a rhinoceros of the genus Stephanorhinus has been found above the Arctic Circle on the middle Chondon River (Yakutia, Russia). This is the northernmost finding that extends significantly the genus range and provides additional information about the diet and environment of a genus representative. Plant remnants from the maxillary tooth cavities were identified as belonging to trees (Larix, Betula), shrubs (Ericaceae), mosses (Aulacomnium sp., Polytrichum sp.), herbs (Dicotyledones) and grasses (Poaceae), but not to sedges (Cyperaceae). The pattern of attrition of teeth and marks on the chewing surface enamel indicate diverse nourishment. Chondon rhinoceros lived in under Arctic-like climatic conditions, with rather limited food resources.  相似文献

The dentition and tooth crown microstructure of gekkonids and eublepharids are examined. Scanning electron microscopy shows that the lingual surface of teeth in these lizards has one, two, or, occasionally, several cusps separated by grooves. The teeth of geckoes usually have two (lingual and labial) cusps in the apical region. With respect to the number of teeth, the majority of Gekkota fall into two groups. The first includes a few species with many teeth (50 or more) in the dentary and maxilla, the eublepharids Goniurosaurus and Aeluroscalabotes, and the gekkonid Cyrtopodion louisiadensis. The second group, comprising most of the species, is subdivided into two subgroups, species with 20–30 or 30–40 teeth in jaw bones. Teratoscincus belongs to the first subgroup of the second group.  相似文献

In the narrow-headed vole, enamel microwear of the first mandibular molar (of the protoconid and entoconid anterior enamel wall) was studied under the laboratory conditions and at the fixed feed composition. The classic parameters and the area of the enamel prism lesion were taken into account. The enamel lesion patterns caused by the tooth–tooth and tooth–food interactions have been determined. Differences were found between the voles kept on feed with different abrasive properties, as well as between the lingual and buccal conids of the first mandibular molar. In the Microtus species, the ratio of micro-lesions (pits and scratches) did not depend on the abrasive properties of the feed consumed. The extent of preservation of the enamel contour anterior edge depended on the feed composition and could be used as an indicator for indirect evaluation of the Microtus species diet.  相似文献

Background

Chromatin adjoining the site of integration of a transgene affects expression and renders comparisons of closely related transgenes, such as those derived from a BAC deletion series retrofitted with enhancer-traps, unreliable. Gene targeting to a pre-determined site on the chromosome is likely to alleviate the problem.

Findings

A general procedure to replace the loxP site located at one end of genomic DNA inserts in BACs with lox66 is described. Truncating insert DNA from the loxP end with a Tn10 transposon carrying a lox66 site simultaneously substitutes the loxP with a lox66 sequence. The replacement occurs with high stringency, and the procedure should be applicable to all BACs in the public domain. Cre recombination of loxP with lox66 or lox71 was found to be as efficient as another loxP site during phage P1 transduction of small plasmids containing those sites. However the end-deletion of insert DNA in BACs using a lox66 transposon occurred at no more than 20% the efficiency observed with a loxP transposon. Differences in the ability of Cre protein available at different stages of the P1 life cycle to recombine identical versus non-identical lox-sites is likely responsible for this discrepancy. A possible mechanism to explain these findings is discussed.

Conclusions

The loxP/lox66 replacement procedure should allow targeting BACs to a pre-positioned lox71 site in zebrafish chromosomes; a system where homologous recombination-mediated "knock-in" technology is unavailable.

We report a new genus and species of sloth, based on a partial mandible and associated femur, from the early Miocene of Venezuela. Baraguatherium takumara, gen. et sp. nov., represents the earliest member of the Mylodontoidea recognized from northern South America. Phylogenetically and morphologically, Baraguatherium possesses some plesiomorphic characters: a vasodentine layer in the core of the tooth similar to Octodontotherium, Paroctodontotherium, and Orophodon; molariforms parallel to the long axis of the toothrow; teeth with a very thin layer of cementum; mf1-mf3 series of similar size and bilobate; mf3 conspicuously piriform; and occlusal surface of tooth beveled, which places it at the base of the Mylodontidae clade. Baraguatherium was found in continental deposits that also preserve abundant wood and leaves associated with a near shore marine complex, indicating that Baraguatherium lived in a coastal tropical forest in the early Miocene in northern South America. The presence of a vasodentine layer in the core of the tooth is quite similar to Octodontotherium, Paroctodontotherium, and Orophodon and allows assignment of this new taxon to the Mylodontoidea.  相似文献

Anaplasma phagocytophilum is transmitted mainly by hard ticks and can cause potentially fatal granulocytic anaplasmosis in humans, but its occurrence in ticks in Taiwan has never been investigated although this pathogen has been detected in Taiwanese rodents before. Ticks collected from small mammals in Hualien, eastern Taiwan, were assayed for Anaplasma infections; infections of Rickettsia and Apicomplexa protozoans were also studied. Of the 270 individually assayed Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides ticks, A. phagocytophilum was identified in a nymphal tick. Parasites most similar to Anaplasma bovis, Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia sp. TwKM01, and at least seven apicomplexan species (including genera Cryptosporidium, Hepatozoon, and Theileria) were also identified. This study shows that A. phagocytophilum does occur in the hard tick in Taiwan, although whether R. haemaphysaloides can vector this pathogen remains to be determined. This work also reveals a high diversity of tick-borne bacteria and protozoans circulating in a small region and calls for further research on their potential risks for human health.  相似文献

The relationship between tooth roots and diet is largely unexplored, although a logical relationship between harder diets and increased root surface area is suggested. Existing studies of primates, carnivorans and phyllostomid bats have indicated a relationship between diet hardness, bite force and tooth root surface area. The goal of this study was to determine whether root surface area can act as a potential surrogate for bite force and diet in cricetid rodents. Using microcomputed tomography (microCT), tooth root morphology from six species of rodents, two grass eaters (Calomys callosus and Reithrodon auritus), two seed eaters (Phyllotis darwini and Ochrotomys nuttalli) and two insect eaters (Akodon azarae and Oxymycterus hispidus) were compared. Similar to other studies, these rodents did exhibit differences in tooth root surface area based on diet classification, but food hardness did not seem to be a factor. Grass-eating species showed significantly larger roots relative to the other diet groups (p = 0.001). Bite force was estimated using skull measurements. Seed eaters were found to have a larger bite force, followed by grass and insect eaters, though the trend did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.058). No strong relationship was found between estimated bite force and tooth root surface area. In this study, the mechanics of grass eating seem to have a stronger effect on tooth root surface area than bite force. microCT allows the nondestructive quantification of previously difficult-to-access tooth morphology; this method shows the potential for tooth roots to provide valuable dietary, behavioral and ecological information in rodents.  相似文献

The helicase gene of Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV) is not only involved in viral DNA replication, but also plays a role in viral host range. To identify the codon usage bias of helicase of AcMNPV, the codon usage bias of helicase was especially studies in AcMNPV and 41 reference strains of baculoviruses by calculating the codon adaptation index (CAI), effective number of codon (ENc), relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU), and other indices. The helicase of baculovirus is less biased (mean ENc?=?50.539?>?40; mean CAI?=?0.246). AcMNPV helicase has a strong bias toward the synonymous codons with G and C at the third codon position (GC3s?=?53.6%). The plot of GC3s against ENc values revealed that GC compositional constraints are the main factor that determines the codon usage bias of major of helicase. Several indicators supported that the codon usage pattern of helicase is mainly subject to mutation pressure. Analysis of variation in codon usage and amino acid composition indicated AcMNPV helicase shows the significant preference for one or more postulated codons for each amino acid. A cluster analysis based on RSCU values suggested that AcMNPV is evolutionarily closer to members of group I alphabaculovirus. Comparison of the codon usage pattern among E. coli, yeast, mouse, human and AcMNPV showed that yeast is a suitable expression system for AcMNPV helicase. AcMNPV helicase shows weak codon usage bias. This study may help in elucidating the functional mechanism of AcMNPV helicase and the evolution of baculovirus helicases.  相似文献

Background

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm with a predilection for children and young adults, and typically arises in the lung, abdominopelvic region, and retroperitoneum. IMTs in the maxillofacial region are extreme rare. Approximately 50% of IMT harbor rearrangements of the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene at 2p23 with various fusion partners.

Case presentation

We herein report a case of intraosseous IMT of the mandible with a novel ATIC-ALK fusion. Tooth 43 did not erupt after the loss of tooth 83 in an 11-year-old girl with no previous history of trauma. Panoramic tomography showed a unilocular radiolucent lesion in the right anterior mandible resorbing the root of tooth 42 and the medial side of the root of tooth 44. Computed tomography revealed a well- circumscribed 3-cm osteolytic lesion of the right anterior mandible eroding the buccal cortical plate. The entire lesion was curetted out. A histopathological examination revealed the proliferation of plump spindle cells with a storiform architecture and lymphocytes scattered around spindle cells. The spindle cells showed diffuse cytoplasmic staining for ALK by immunohistochemistry. A fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis revealed the translocation of a part of the ALK gene locus at chromosome 2p23. A rapid amplification of cDNA ends analysis confirmed the rearrangement of ALK and identified ATIC as a partner of this ALK fusion mutant.

Conclusion

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of intraosseous IMT of the mandible with a novel ATIC-ALK fusion. We also herein reviewed similar tumors reported in the literature.

The interaction between mouse angora-Y (Fgf5 go-Y) and hairless (hr) genes have been studied. Homozygous mutant gene Fgf5 go-Y increases length of all hair types, while homozygotes for the h gene lose hair completely starting on day 14 after birth. We obtained mice with genotypes +/+ hr/hr F2, +/Fgf5 go-Y hr/hr and Fgf5 go-Y/Fgf5 go-Y hr/hr. Both +/Fgf5 go-Y hr/hr and +/+ hr/hr mice began to loose hair from their heads on day 14. This further extended on the whole body. On day 21 the mice were completely deprived of hair. Therefore a single dose of gene Fgf5 go-Y does not modify alopecia in mice homozygous for hr. However in double homozygotes Fgf5 go-Y/Fgf5 go-Y hr/hr alopecia started 4 days later, namely on day 18. It usually finished 10–12 days after detection of first bald patches. On days 28–30 double homozygotes lose coat completely. Hair loss in double homozygous mice was 1.5-fold slower than in +/+ hr/hr mice. This resulted from a significant extension of anagen phase induced by a mutant homozygous gene Fgf5 go-Y in morphogenesis of the hair follicle. The hr gene was expressed at the transmission phase from anagen to catagen. Our data shows that the angora gene is a modifier of the hairless gene and this results in a strong repression of alopecia progression in double homozygous mice compared to +/+ hr/hr animals.  相似文献
