Foliar oils, particularly monoterpenes, can influence the susceptibility of plants to herbivory. In plants, including eucalypts, monoterpenes are often associated with plant defence. A recent analysis revealed an increase in foliar oil content with increasing latitudinal endemism, and we tested this pattern using three eucalypt taxa comprising a latitudinal replacement cline. We also examined the relative concentrations of two monoterpenes (α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole), for which meta‐analyses also showed latitudinal variation, using hybrids of these three taxa with Corymbia torelliana. These, and pure C. torelliana, were then assessed in common‐garden field plots for the abundance and distribution of herbivory by four distinct herbivore taxa. Differing feeding strategies among these herbivores allowed us to test hypotheses regarding heritability of susceptibility and relationships to α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole. We found no support for an increase in foliar oil content with increasing latitude, nor did our analysis support predictions for consistent variation in α‐pinene and 1,8‐cineole contents with latitude. However, herbivore species showed differential responses to different taxa and monoterpene contents. For example, eriophyid mites, the most monophagous of our censused herbivores, avoided the pure species, but fed on hybrid taxa, supporting hypotheses on hybrid susceptibility. The most polyphagous herbivore (leaf blister sawfly Phylacteophaga froggatti) showed no evidence of response to plant secondary metabolites, while the distribution and abundance patterns of Paropsis atomaria showed some relationship to monoterpene yields.  相似文献

Pine wood nematode (PWN; Bursaphelenchus xylophilus), a destructive pest of Pinus massoniana, is causing a severe epidemic of pine wilt disease in China. When invaded by PWN, resistant P. massoniana secretes an abundance of oleoresin terpenoids as a defensive strategy. However, regulatory mechanisms of this defence in resistant P. massoniana have yet to be elucidated. Here, we characterized two terpene synthase genes, α‐pinene synthase (PmTPS4) and longifolene synthase (PmTPS21), identified in resistant P. massoniana and investigate the contribution of these genes to the oleoresin defence strategy in resistant masson pines. Up‐regulation of these two genes in the stem supported their involvement in terpene biosynthesis as part of the defence against PWN. Recombinant protein expression revealed catalytic activity for the two PmTPSs, with PmTPS4 primarily producing α‐pinene, while PmTPS21 produced α‐pinene and longifolene simultaneously. The major enzymatic products of the two terpene synthases had inhibitory effects on PWN in vitro. We demonstrated that PmTPS4 and PmTPS21 played positive roles in terpene‐defence mechanisms against PWN infestation. The major products of these terpene synthases could directly inhibit the survival rate of PWN in vitro. We revealed that PmTPS21 was a novel bifunctional enzyme capable of simultaneous production of both monoterpene and sesquiterpene.  相似文献

Background and Aims The development of plant secondary metabolites during early life stages can have significant ecological and evolutionary implications for plant–herbivore interactions. Foliar terpenes influence a broad range of ecological interactions, including plant defence, and their expression may be influenced by ontogenetic and genetic factors. This study investigates the role of these factors in the expression of foliar terpene compounds in Eucalyptus globulus seedlings. Methods Seedlings were sourced from ten families each from three genetically distinct populations, representing relatively high and low chemical resistance to mammalian herbivory. Cotyledon-stage seedlings and consecutive leaf pairs of true leaves were harvested separately across an 8-month period, and analysed for eight monoterpene compounds and six sesquiterpene compounds.Key Results Foliar terpenes showed a series of dynamic changes with ontogenetic trajectories differing between populations and families, as well as between and within the two major terpene classes. Sesquiterpenes changed rapidly through ontogeny and expressed opposing trajectories between compounds, but showed consistency in pattern between populations. Conversely, changed expression in monoterpene trajectories was population- and compound-specific.Conclusions The results suggest that adaptive opportunities exist for changing levels of terpene content through ontogeny, and evolution may exploit the ontogenetic patterns of change in these compounds to create a diverse ontogenetic chemical mosaic with which to defend the plant. It is hypothesized that the observed genetically based patterns in terpene ontogenetic trajectories reflect multiple changes in the regulation of genes throughout different terpene biosynthetic pathways.  相似文献

Leptocybe invasa is an insect pest causing gall formation on oviposited shoot tips and leaves of Eucalyptus trees leading to leaf deformation, stunting, and death in severe cases. We previously observed different constitutive and induced terpenes, plant specialized metabolites that may act as attractants or repellents to insects, in a resistant and susceptible clone of Eucalyptus challenged with Linvasa. We tested the hypothesis that specific terpenes are associated with pest resistance in a Eucalyptus grandis half‐sib population. Insect damage was scored over 2 infestation cycles, and leaves were harvested for near‐infrared reflectance (NIR) and terpene measurements. We used Bayesian model averaging for terpene selection and obtained partial least squares NIR models to predict terpene content and Linvasa infestation damage. In our optimal model, 29% of the phenotypic variation could be explained by 7 terpenes, and the monoterpene combination, limonene, α‐terpineol, and 1,8‐cineole, could be predicted with an NIR prediction ability of  .67. Bayesian model averaging supported α‐pinene, γ‐terpinene, and iso‐pinocarveol as important for predicting Linvasa infestation. Susceptibility was associated with increased γ‐terpinene and α‐pinene, which may act as a pest attractant, whereas reduced susceptibility was associated with iso‐pinocarveol, which may act to recruit parasitoids or have direct toxic effects.  相似文献

Although herbivory is widespread among mammals, few species have adopted a strategy of dietary specialization. Feeding on a single plant species often exposes herbivores to high doses of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs), which may exceed the animal's detoxification capacities. Theory predicts that specialists will have unique detoxification mechanisms to process high levels of dietary toxins. To evaluate this hypothesis, we compared liver microsomal metabolism of a juniper specialist, Neotoma stephensi (diet >85% juniper), to a generalist, N. albigula (diet ≤30% juniper). Specifically, we quantified the concentration of a key detoxification enzyme, cytochrome P450 2B (CYP2B) in liver microsomes, and the metabolism of α‐pinene, the most abundant terpene in the juniper species consumed by the specialist woodrat. In both species, a 30% juniper diet increased the total CYP2B concentration (2–3×) in microsomes and microsomal α‐pinene metabolism rates (4‐fold). In N. stephensi, higher levels of dietary juniper (60% and 100%) further induced CYP2B and increased metabolism rates of α‐pinene. Although no species‐specific differences in metabolism rates were observed at 30% dietary juniper, total microsomal CYP2B concentration was 1.7× higher in N. stephensi than in N. albigula (p < .01), suggesting N. stephensi produces one or more variant of CYP2B that is less efficient at processing α‐pinene. In N. stephensi, the rates of α‐pinene metabolism increased with dietary juniper and were positively correlated with CYP2B concentration. The ability of N. stephensi to elevate CYP2B concentration and rate of α‐pinene metabolism with increasing levels of juniper in the diet may facilitate juniper specialization in this species.  相似文献

Aims: To study the metabolic profile of Pseudomonas rhodesiae and Pseudomonas fluorescens in water–organic solvent systems using terpene substrates for both growth and biotransformation processes and to determine the aerobic or anaerobic status of these degradation pathways. Materials and Methods: Substrates from pinene (α‐pinene, α‐pinene oxide, β‐pinene, β‐pinene oxide, turpentine) and limonene (limonene, limonene‐1,2‐oxide, orange peel oil) families were tested. For the bioconversion, the terpene‐grown biomass was concentrated and used either as whole cells or as a crude enzymatic extract. Conclusion: Pseudomonas rhodesiae was the most suitable biocatalyst for the production of isonovalal from α‐pinene oxide and did not metabolize limonene. Pseudomonas fluorescens was a more versatile micro‐organism and metabolized limonene in two different ways. The first (anaerobic, cofactor‐independent, noninducible) allowed limonene elimination by synthesizing α‐terpineol. The second (aerobic, cofactor‐dependent) involved limonene‐1,2‐oxide as an intermediate for energy production through a β‐oxidation process. Significance and Impact of the Study: Enzymatic isomerization of β‐ to α‐pinene was described for the first time for both strains. Alpha‐terpineol production by P. fluorescens was very efficient and appeared as a promising alternative for the commercial production of this bioflavour.  相似文献

1. A tritrophic perspective is fundamental for understanding the drivers of insect–plant interactions. While host plant traits can directly affect insect herbivore performance by either inhibiting or altering the nutritional benefits of consumption, they can also have an indirect effect on herbivores by influencing rates of predation or parasitism. 2. Enhancing soil nutrients available to trees of the genus Eucalyptus consistently modifies plant traits, typically improving the nutritional quality of the foliage for insect herbivores. We hypothesised that resulting increases in volatile essential oils could have an indirect negative effect on eucalypt‐feeding herbivores by providing their natural enemies with stronger host/prey location cues. 3. Eucalyptus tereticornis Smith seedlings were grown under low‐ and high‐nutrient conditions and the consequences for the release of volatile cues from damaged plants were examined. The influence of 1,8‐cineole (the major volatile terpene in many Eucalyptus species) on rates of predation on model caterpillars in the field was then examined. 4. It was found that the emission of cineole increased significantly after damage (artificial or herbivore), but continued only when damage was sustained by herbivore feeding. Importantly, more cineole was emitted from high‐ than low‐nutrient seedlings given an equivalent amount of damage. In the field, predation was significantly greater on model caterpillars baited with cineole than on unbaited models. 5. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that any performance benefits insect herbivores derive from feeding on high‐nutrient eucalypt foliage could be at least partially offset by an increased risk of predation or parasitism via increased emission of attractive volatiles.  相似文献

Plants employ a variety of defence mechanisms, some of which act directly by having a negative effect on herbivores and others that act indirectly by attracting natural enemies of herbivores. In this study we asked if a common jasmonate‐signalling pathway links the regulation of direct and indirect defences in plants. We examined the performance of herbivores (direct defence) and the attraction of natural enemies of herbivores (indirect defence) to wild‐type tomato plants and mutant plants that are deficient in the production of the signalling hormone jasmonic acid. Wild‐type plants supported lower survivorship of caterpillars compared with jasmonic acid‐deficient plants. Damaged wild‐type plants were more attractive to predaceous mites compared with undamaged wild‐type plants, whereas damaged jasmonate‐deficient plants were not more attractive to predators. Damaged wild‐type plants induced a greater production of volatile compounds (primarily the sesquiterpene β‐caryophyllene and the monoterpenes α‐pinene, β‐pinene, 2‐carene and β‐phellandrene) compared with damaged jasmonate‐deficient plants. Treating jasmonate‐deficient plants with exogenous jasmonic acid restored both the direct and indirect defence capabilities, demonstrating that jasmonic acid is an essential regulatory component for the expression of direct and indirect plant defence.  相似文献

Conifers respond to herbivore attack with defensive chemicals, which are toxic to both insects and their associated microorganisms. Microorganisms associated with insects have been widely reported to metabolize toxic chemicals, which may help both microorganisms and host insects overcome host conifer defense. Dendroctonus valens LeConte, an introduced exotic pest from North America to China, has killed millions of healthy pines. Alpha‐pinene is the most abundant defensive monoterpene in Chinese Pinus tabuliformis. Although microorganisms associated with D. valens have already been investigated, little is known about their bioactivities when encountering host defensive monoterpenes. In this study, we evaluated the influences of different concentrations of α‐pinene to D. valens and the three most frequently isolated yeasts and bacteria of D. valens, and further assayed microorganisms’ capabilities to degrade α‐pinene. Results showed that the gallery lengths and body weight changes of bark beetles were significantly affected by 6 mg/mL and 12 mg/mL of α‐pinene applied in media compared to controls. The tolerance of experimental microorganisms to α‐pinene varied depending on the microbial species. Two out of three yeast strains and all three bacterial strains degraded 20%–50% of α‐pinene compared to controls in 24 h in vitro. The microorganisms capable of α‐pinene degradation in vitro and their tolerance to high levels of α‐pinene suggested that D. valens‐associated microorganisms may help both microorganisms and the bark beetle overcome host α‐pinene defense.  相似文献

Olfaction is an important sense for many animals, yet its role in foraging by herbivores is poorly known. Many plants contain volatile compounds, such as terpenes, that are not only volatile but can be toxic if ingested. Volatile terpenes can be used by herbivores to assess leaf quality, but there is little evidence for whether they are also used as a searching cue. We applied the giving-up density (GUD) framework to examine fine-scale foraging by two free-ranging mammalian herbivores, the brush-tail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula) and the swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor), using patches with food and an inedible matrix that varied in content of a volatile terpene, 1,8-cineole. We tested the effect of (1) increasing dietary cineole concentration, and (2) masking the food odor by adding cineole to the inedible matrix, thus overriding the smell released by the diet. In both species GUD was affected by dietary cineole; a high cineole concentration raised GUD, consistent with its role as a toxin. There was a significant effect of masking on GUD for wallabies but not for possums, suggesting that odor was an important foraging cue at the feeding patch only for the former. Differences in ecological niche and diet may explain this pattern. We suggest that herbivores, such as the swamp wallaby, opportunistically eavesdrop on plant volatiles, i.e., take advantage of the signal proffered for a different function. The cost of this eavesdropping for plants, however, is presumably counteracted by other ecological benefits of these volatiles, including a reduction in leaf consumption as a function of toxicity.  相似文献

This study assessed how the palatability of leaves of different age classes (young, intermediate and older) of Eucalyptus nitens seedlings varied with plant nutrient status, based on captive feeding trials with two mammalian herbivores, red-bellied pademelons (Thylogale billardierii), and common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). Seedlings were grown under three nutrient treatments (low, medium and high), and we determined how palatability was related to chemical and physical characteristics of the leaves. Pademelons ate more older leaves than young and intermediate leaves for all treatments. This pattern was best explained by sideroxylonals (formylated phloroglucinol compounds known to deter herbivory by other marsupials), and/or essential oil compounds that were present in lower concentrations in older leaves. In the low-nutrient treatment, possums also ate more of the older leaves. However, in the medium- and high-nutrient treatments, possums ate more intermediate leaves than older leaves and showed a behavioural preference for young leaves (consuming younger leaves first) over intermediate and older leaves, in spite of high levels of sideroxylonals and essential oils. The young leaves did, however, have the highest nitrogen concentration of all the leaf age classes. Thus, either sideroxylonals and essential oils provided little or no deterrent to possums, or the deterrent was outweighed by other factors such as high nitrogen. This study indicates that mammalian herbivores show different levels of relative use and damage to leaf age classes at varying levels of plant nutrient status and, therefore, their impact on plant fitness may vary with environment.  相似文献

Background and Aims Ontogenetic changes in anti-herbivore defences are common and result from variation in resource availability and herbivore damage throughout plant development. However, little is known about the simultaneous changes of multiple defences across the entire development of plants, and how such changes affect plant damage in the field. The aim of this study was to assess if changes in the major types of plant resistance and tolerance can explain natural herbivore damage throughout plant ontogeny. Methods An assessment was made of how six defensive traits, including physical, chemical and biotic resistance, simultaneously change across the major transitions of plant development, from seedlings to reproductive stages of Turnera velutina growing in the greenhouse. In addition, an experiment was performed to assess how plant tolerance to artificial damage to leaves changed throughout ontogeny. Finally, leaf damage by herbivores was evaluated in a natural population.Key Results The observed ontogenetic trajectories of all defences were significantly different, sometimes showing opposite directions of change. Whereas trichome density, leaf toughness, extrafloral nectary abundance and nectar production increased, hydrogen cyanide and compensatory responses decreased throughout plant development, from seedlings to reproductive plants. Only water content was higher at the intermediate juvenile ontogenetic stages. Surveys in a natural population over 3 years showed that herbivores consumed more tissue from juvenile plants than from younger seedlings or older reproductive plants. This is consistent with the fact that juvenile plants were the least defended stage. Conclusions The results suggest that defensive trajectories are a mixed result of predictions by the Optimal Defence Theory and the Growth–Differentiation Balance Hypothesis. The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating multiple defences and plant ontogeny into further studies for a more comprehensive understanding of plant defence evolution.  相似文献

Many studies have shown that similarly aged plants within a species or population can vary markedly in the concentration of defence compounds they deploy to protect themselves from herbivores. Some studies have also shown that the concentration of these compounds can change with development, but no empirical research has mapped such an ontogenetic trajectory in detail. To do this, we grew cyanogenic Eucalyptus yarraensis seedlings from three half-sibling families under constant glasshouse conditions, and followed their foliar cyanogenic glycoside (prunasin) concentration over time for 338 days after sowing (DAS). Plants in all families followed a similar temporal pattern. Plants increased in foliar prunasin concentration from a very low level (10 μg cyanide (CN) equivalents g−1) in their first leaves, to a maximum of, on average, 1.2 mg CN g−1 at about 240 DAS. From 240 to 338 DAS, prunasin concentration gradually decreased to around 0.7 mg CN g−1. Significant differences between families in maximum prunasin concentration were detected, but none were detected in the time at which this maximum occurred. In parallel with these changes in prunasin concentration, we detected an approximately linear increase in leaf mass per unit leaf area (LMA) with time, which reflected a change from juvenile to adult-like leaf anatomy. When ontogenetic trajectories of prunasin against LMA were constructed, we failed to detect a significant difference between families in the LMA at which maximum prunasin concentration occurred. This remarkable similarity in the temporal and ontogenetic trajectories between individuals, even from geographically remote families, is discussed in relation to a theoretical model for ontogenetic changes in plant defence. Our results show that ontogeny can constrain the expression of plant chemical defense and that chemical defense changes in a nonlinear fashion with ontogeny.  相似文献

Terpene, resin acid and total phenolic concentrations in five‐year‐old Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) seedlings were analysed after exposure to ambient and realistically elevated (2 × ambient) O3 and CO2 concentrations and their combination in open‐top chambers during two growing seasons. Under O3 exposure, limonene concentration in needles and isopimaric concentration in stems decreased significantly. As a response to elevated CO2, α‐pinene and total phenolic concentrations in needles increased significantly, while bornyl acetate concentration in needles and palustric + levopimaric and neoabietic acid concentrations in stems decreased significantly. Some terpenes and resin acids were found at lower concentrations in the combined O3 and CO2 treatment than in O3 exposure or elevated CO2. A negative chamber effect was found: seedlings growing inside the chambers with ambient air had significantly lower concentrations of some terpenes and resin acids than seedlings growing outside the chambers. There was a lot of between‐tree variation in terpene and resin acid concentrations, which is typical of open‐pollinated populations. The results of this study suggest that, at least in short‐term experiments, Scots pine secondary metabolites are relatively insensitive to climate change factors. Total phenolics in the needles were the most responsive group showing about 25% increase in elevated CO2, and O3 exposure did not mitigate this CO2 effect. Terpenes and resin acids were less responsive, although some individual compounds showed notable responses, e.g. α‐pinene in needles, which increased about 50% in response to elevated CO2. As a consequence, although there were only slight effects on total pools of needle secondary metabolites, considerable O3 and CO2 effects on certain individual compounds might have ecological significance via trophic amplification, e.g. in decomposing processes of needle litter.  相似文献

The insecticidal activity of essential oils from 12 species of Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae) was evaluated on larvae of Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera: Culicidae), the most important vector of dengue and yellow fever in the Americas. Oils were obtained by hydrodistillation and their chemical composition was determined by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry; yields ranged from 0.2 to 2.5%. Essential oils were mainly composed of 1,8‐cineole, α‐pinene, α‐phellandrene, β‐phellandrene, γ‐terpinene, 4‐terpineol, α‐terpineol, p‐cymene, and spathulenol. Larvicidal effects were tested on susceptible third or fourth stage Ae. aegypti larvae, determining median lethal concentration (LC50) and median effective concentration (EC50). Essential oils from Eucalyptus dunnii (Maiden), Eucalyptus gunnii (Hook), Eucalyptus tereticornis (Smith), Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Dehn), and Eucalyptus saligna (Smith) showed the best larvicidal activities with LC50 values of 25.2, 21.1, 22.1, 26.8, and 22.2, respectively. No significant differences were observed between LC50 and EC50 values of the same oil. Regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between total essential oil yields and 1,8‐cineole concentration. Significant relationships were also revealed between larval mortality and the concentration of 1,8‐cineole and p‐cymene. This indicated that Eucalyptus species with high oil yields have higher 1,8‐cineole concentrations and lower p‐cymene concentrations and have less effect on Ae. aegypti. Our results suggest the potential of controlled crossing methods to obtain Eucalyptus trees with chemical profiles having enhanced activity against this mosquito.  相似文献

Plant defence often varies by orders of magnitude as plants develop from the seedling to juvenile to mature and senescent stages. Ontogenetic trajectories can involve switches among defence traits, leading to complex shifting phenotypes across plant lifetimes. While considerable research has characterised ontogenetic trajectories for now hundreds of plant species, we still lack a clear understanding of the molecular, ecological and evolutionary factors driving these patterns. In this study, we identify several non‐mutually exclusive factors that may have led to the evolution of ontogenetic trajectories in plant defence, including developmental constraints, resource allocation costs, multi‐functionality of defence traits, and herbivore selection pressure. Evidence from recent physiological studies is highlighted to shed light on the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation and activation of these developmental changes. Overall, our goal is to promote new research avenues that would provide evidence for the factors that have promoted the evolution of this complex lifetime phenotype. Future research focusing on the questions and approaches identified here will advance the field and shed light on why defence traits shift so dramatically across plant ontogeny, a widespread but poorly understood ecological pattern.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Host plant terpenes can influence attraction of conifer bark beetles to their aggregation pheromones: both synergistic and inhibitory compounds have been reported. However, we know little about how varying concentrations of individual monoterpenes affect responses. 2 We tested a gradient of ratios of α‐pinene, the predominant monoterpene in host pines in the Great Lakes region of North America, to Ips pini's pheromone, racemic ipsdienol plus lanierone. 3 Ips pini demonstrated a parabolic response, in which low concentrations of α‐pinene had no effect on attraction to its pheromone, intermediate concentrations were synergistic and high concentrations were inhibitory. These results suggest optimal release rates for population monitoring and suppression programmes. 4 Inhibition of bark beetle attraction to pheromones may be an important component of conifer defences. At terpene to pheromone ratios emulating emissions from trees actively responding to a first attack, arrival of flying beetles was low. This may constitute an additional defensive role of terpenes, which are also toxic to bark beetles at high concentrations. 5 Reduced attraction to a low ratio of α‐pinene to pheromone, as occurs when colonization densities become high and the tree's resin is largely depleted, might reflect a mechanism for preventing excessive crowding. 6 Thanasimus dubius, the predominant predator of I. pini, was also attracted to ipsdienol plus lanierone, but its response differed from that of its prey. Attraction increased across all concentrations of α‐pinene. This indicates that separate lures are needed to sample both predators and bark beetles effectively. It also provides an opportunity for maximizing pest removal while reducing adverse effects on beneficial species. This disparity further illustrates the complexity confronting natural enemies that track chemical signals to locate herbivores.  相似文献

The detoxification limitation hypothesis predicts that the metabolism and biotransformation of plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) elicit a cost to herbivores. There have been many attempts to estimate these costs to mammalian herbivores in terms of energy, but this ignores what may be a more important cost—increases in protein turnover and concomitant losses of amino acids. We measured the effect of varying dietary protein concentrations on the ingestion of two PSMs (1,8 cineole—a monoterpene, and benzoic acid—an aromatic carboxylic acid) by common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). The dietary protein concentration had a small effect on how much cineole possums ingested. In contrast, protein had a large effect on how much benzoate they ingested, especially at high dietary concentrations of benzoate. This prompted us to measure the effects of dietary protein and benzoate on whole-body protein turnover using the end-product method following an oral dose of [15N] glycine. Increasing the concentration of dietary protein in diets without PSMs improved N balance but did not influence whole-body protein turnover. In contrast, feeding benzoate in a low-protein diet pushed animals into negative N balance. The concomitant increases in the rates of whole-body protein turnover in possums eating diets with more benzoate were indicative of a protein cost of detoxification. This was about 30 % of the dietary N intake and highlights the significant effects that PSMs can have on nutrient metabolism and retention.  相似文献

Eucalypts are characterized by their oleaginous foliage, yet no one has considered the universality of oil expression or its ecological associations and implications for biodiversity. Published literature on the oils of 66 eucalypts was combined with geographic distribution information contained in the Australian National Herbarium (ANHSIR) database to investigate continent‐scale changes in oil yield and composition. The exposure to fire and rainfall of each eucalypt was considered in reference to Walker's data on fire frequency and Australian Bureau of Meteorology 97‐year records of rainfall variability. Host collection records for 69 species of chrysomelid leaf‐beetle were collated from entomologists to consider patterns of association with a subset of 16 eucalypts. Eucalypts endemic to the seasonally arid, sub‐tropical to tropical climates of northern Australia have less oleaginous and aromatic leaves than species endemic to the mesic, temperate climates of the southern parts of the continent. Maximum oil yield and the concentrations of cineole and pinene were positively correlated with minimum fire interval but not with rainfall variability. Low oil contents in more northerly distributed species may facilitate persistence in highly fire‐prone habitats. There were no patterns in the diversity of chrysomelid leaf‐beetles with either the oil yield or the concentrations of 1,8‐cineole or α‐pinene in their hosts. When taken in consideration with the apparent strategy of eucalypts to tolerate insect herbivory, current evidence augurs against high concentrations of cineole or pinene acting alone as antibiotic plant secondary metabolites.  相似文献

Plant secondary metabolites (PSMs) strongly influence diet selection by mammalian herbivores. Concentrations of PSMs vary within and among plant species, and across landscapes. Therefore, local adaptations may cause different populations of herbivores to differ in their ability to tolerate PSMs. Here, we tested the food intake responses of three populations of a marsupial folivore, the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula Kerr), from different latitudes and habitat types, to four types of PSMs. We found clear variation in the responses of northern and southern Australian possums to PSMs. Brushtail possums from southern Australia showed marked decreases in food intake in response to all four PSMs, while the two populations from northern Australia were not as sensitive and their responses did not differ from one another. These results were unexpected, based on our understanding of the experiences of these populations with PSMs in the wild. Our results suggest that geographically separated populations of possums may have evolved differing abilities to cope with PSMs, as a result of local adaptation to their natural environments. Our results provide the basis for future studies to investigate the mechanisms by which populations of mammalian species differ in their ability to tolerate PSMs.  相似文献
