The evolution of dioecy in plants is expected to be followed by sex-specific selection, leading to sexual dimorphism. The extent of the response to selection depends on the genetic covariance structure between traits both within and between the sexes. Here I describe an investigation to determine phenotypic and genetic correlations between reproductive traits within cryptically dioecious Thalictrum pubescens and within morphologically dioecious T. dioicum. Females of T. pubescens produce flowers having stamens and pistils, appearing hermaphroditic. Genetic correlations were estimated as family-mean correlations among paternal half-sib families. Positive phenotypic and genetic correlations between parts of the same reproductive organs, as the anther and filament of the stamen, indicate developmental associations between these traits in both species. Negative genetic correlations were detected between pistil number and size of reproductive organs in T. dioicum and showed the same direction, but not significance, in T. pubescens. There was a negative phenotypic correlation between the number of stamens and the number of pistils within female flowers of T. pubescens. Within T. pubescens, there was a positive genetic correlation between the number of stamens in males and the number of pistils in females, indicating that floral evolution in males and females may not be independent in this species.  相似文献

Many studies have suggested that reproductive performance improvesduring the pair-bond, which might explain why individuals rematewith the same partner in many species. However, discussion existsabout whether the association between reproductive performanceand pair-bond duration that is reported in these studies reflectsa causal relationship. Usually it is unclear whether a positiveassociation is caused by pairs improving during their pair-bondor by high-quality pairs staying together for longer. Furthermore, reproductive performance often also depends on the age or breedingexperience of parents, which all covary with pair-bond duration.A much needed experimental approach is lacking so far. We investigatedthe effect of pair-bond duration on reproductive performancein a long-lived monogamous bird species based on natural aswell as experimental variation. The duration of oystercatcher(Haematopus ostralegus) pair-bonds, which were followed for21 years, strongly affected reproductive output, even aftercontrolling for effects of age and breeding experience. Pairsimproved during their pair-bond, and there were no indicationsof selective disappearance of low-quality pairs; however, pairsthat stayed together for very long performed badly. Experimentalremoval of one partner showed that the reproductive cost ofdivorce depended on the pair-bond duration with the old partner. In addition, after remating, the newly formed pairs stronglyimproved again, independent of the age and breeding experienceof the remated pair members. As such, this study provides thefirst experimental evidence of a causal effect of pair-bondduration on reproductive performance.  相似文献

Studies in birds show that testosterone (T) concentrations vary over the annual cycle depending on mating system and life history traits. Socially monogamous species show pairing behavior throughout the year and low levels of male-male aggression and are underrepresented in these studies, yet the function of testosterone could be particularly important for sexual and social interactions occurring outside the breeding season. We measured fecal T concentrations over the annual cycle and the frequency of interactions between male and female downy woodpeckers (Picoides pubescens) from late fall through early spring. We validated the fecal assay by collecting blood in conjunction with a subsample of our fecal samples: fecal T correlated with circulating levels in the blood. The annual peak level of T in males was relatively low and short-lived, similar to that of other bird species with low levels of male-male aggression and high paternal care. The annual cycle of female T resembled the male pattern, and the ratio of male T to female T was close to 1.0. Likewise, the frequency of aggression among females was similar to the frequency among males. Overall, testosterone levels in both sexes were variable, even in winter. In other bird species, sexual behavior during nonbreeding periods correlates with circulating levels of T in males. Based on this observation, we tested the hypothesis that T in winter was positively related to the frequency of interaction between mated downy woodpeckers. The results showed no such relationship. We discuss this finding and further relate the annual cycle of T in both males and females to behaviors that appear to facilitate mate choice and retention of the pair bond during conspecific challenge.  相似文献

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal rodent living in the Southern Hemisphere. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle characterized by a gonadal regression period during winter. In this study, we investigated the effects of bilateral enucleation and captivity on their annual reproductive cycle. Testicular volume relative to body weight was recorded monthly in intact and bilaterally enucleated animals placed under natural photoperiod, water, and food ad lib. and constant temperature. Testes and accessory organs were evaluated by qualitative and quantitative light microscopic studies. The intact animals showed an annual reproductive cycle with complete gonadal atrophy in the first year. In the second year, testicular regression was observed but attenuated in regard to that recorded in the first winter period, indicating that adaptive changes might be involved. Bilateral enucleation in the viscacha dampened and extended the period of its annual reproductive cycle. The results suggest that both conditions, constant captivity and enucleation, produced stimulatory effects on the reproductive system of this rodent. Furthermore, local control mechanisms might be responsible for the morphological differences observed in testes, epididymis, and seminal vesicles from both groups, which exhibited similar levels of serum testosterone. Finally, an intact retinohypothalamic-pineal axis and/or photoperiodic input would be necessary to maintain the reproductive cycle amplitude and timing in viscacha.  相似文献

The sexes often have different phenotypic optima for important life-history traits, and because of a largely shared genome this can lead to a conflict over trait expression. In mammals, the obligate costs of reproduction are higher for females, making reproductive timing and rate especially liable to conflict between the sexes. While studies from wild vertebrates support such sexual conflict, it remains unexplored in humans. We used a pedigreed human population from preindustrial Finland to estimate sexual conflict over age at first and last reproduction, reproductive lifespan and reproductive rate. We found that the phenotypic selection gradients differed between the sexes. We next established significant heritabilities in both sexes for all traits. All traits, except reproductive rate, showed strongly positive intersexual genetic correlations and were strongly genetically correlated with fitness in both sexes. Moreover, the genetic correlations with fitness were almost identical in men and women. For reproductive rate, the intersexual correlation and the correlation with fitness were weaker but again similar between the sexes. Thus, in this population, an apparent sexual conflict at the phenotypic level did not reflect an underlying genetic conflict over the studied reproductive traits. These findings emphasize the need for incorporating genetic perspectives into studies of human life-history evolution.  相似文献

Menarche is a significant developmental event in the lives of young females. Genetic and family environmental influences on the timing of its occurrence are explored in the first formal analysis using reared-apart and reared-together monozygotic (MZA, MZT) and dizygotic (DZA, DZT) twin pairs. Mean age at menarche was 12.50 years (SD = 1.67) for the reared-apart pairs and 12.86 years (SD = 1.49) for the reared-together pairs. Intraclass correlations for age at menarche were 0.56 for MZA twins, 0.16 for DZA twins, 0.70 for MZT twins, and 0.41 for DZT twins. The mean within-pair difference was 1.07 years (SD = 1.04) for MZA twins, 1.67 years (SD = 1.59) for DZA twins, 0.64 year (SD = 0.86) for MZT twins, and 1.43 years (SD = 1.34) for DZT twins. These results are consistent with genetic influence, although the lower correlations for reared-apart twins and their larger within-pair differences suggest that age at menarche is partly affected by common rearing environments. Feeling understood by one's father during the growing-up years was significantly associated with earlier age at menarche, and a comparable trend was found for feeling understood by one's mother. These findings are considered with reference to current theories of pubertal timing.  相似文献

In socially monogamous species pair partners often form and maintain long‐term pair‐bonds. Relationships between pair partners are dynamic and driven by both cooperation and conflicts between the sexes. Successful reproduction depends on behavioural coordination and cooperation, which includes continuing mutual responsiveness between the pair partners, as well as conflicts, for example, over parental investment. Gonadal hormones, such as testosterone, centrally regulate reproduction and are potentially involved in the formation and maintenance of pair‐bonds. In greylag geese ( Anser anser), a positive within‐pair testosterone co‐variation (TC) among pair partners has been observed at the seasonal level. Goose pairs with a higher TC have a higher reproductive output and long‐term success than pairs with lower TC, but it is still not clear whether TC is cause or consequence. In this article, I (i) summarize the evidence for hormonal partner compatibility in geese, (ii) ask whether TC is restricted to monogamous and biparental systems and (iii) synthesize open questions or new aspects of information we may draw by studying hormonal partner compatibility. From longitudinal studies in geese, we know that TC decreases with pair‐bond duration. This indicates some form of ‘attritional effect’ over the years rather than an improved breeding performance with increasing familiarity between the partners (the ‘mate familiarity hypothesis’). Under certain circumstances, for example, during ageing, selection may not act in the same direction for males and females. Partner preference increased female androgen levels during laying and social instability may impinge on the pair's TC. Data from other species show that TC is not restricted to monogamous species, but presumably the link between TC and reproductive output may be primarily relevant in species with biparental care. This article surveys the major unanswered questions relating to hormonal partner compatibility and previews potential future work for addressing those open issues.  相似文献

The sociosexual relationship between male and female common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) is characterized by pair-bond formation, which includes sexual and social interactions such as contact, huddling and allogrooming. The formation of heterosexual pairs in captivity sometimes is unsuccessful in terms of reproduction. We investigated the existence of a correlation between characteristics of sociosexual interaction of marmoset pairs and its role in stimulating reproductive function in females. We studied pair-bond formation during the first 10 weeks of pairing in eight unrelated heterosexual pairs of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) without prior sexual experience. In three of them, pregnancy occurred during the study period (group SR), and we compared the profile of their sociosexual interactions with that of the five other couples in which pregnancy was not registered (group NS) during that period. The results show differences between the two groups, related mainly to affiliative responses between male and female, with significantly higher levels of allogrooming and simultaneous piloerection in the SR group. Although we did not find significant differences in the frequency of mounting behavior between groups, their reproductive success was different, suggesting that some behavioral patterns related to cooperative interactions between the male and female could be expressing the pair-bond. These behaviors may be influencing the females' physiology and consequently successful reproduction in the species.  相似文献

We measured breeding performance of little penguins Eudyptula minor at Phillip Island, Victoria, Australia, during a 21-year period. All birds considered in this paper (n=307) were of known age (2–22 y) and sex, and most were of known, or closely-estimated, pair-bond status (1–8 mates per bird; pair-bond durations 1–13 y). Breeding dates and breeding performance varied markedly from year to year; measures of annual performance were not associated with early breeding. Measures of individual breeding performance (clutch-size, hatching success, chick masses and productivity) were related to early laying, parental age, and duration of pair-bond. Dependence of breeding performance on parental age was curvilinear, levelling off at about 8 y of age. Productivity declined significantly among birds older than 8 y; this decline was not due to events in the last year of breeding ("terminal illness"). Breeding performance increased with duration of pair-bond at least through y 5. Early breeding was significantly related to age and duration of pair-bond. Most of these relationships were stronger among males than among females, and many of them were not significant when females were considered alone. After controlling for other factors, breeding performance varied significantly among birds, but autocorrelations were low and limited to intervals of one year. Parental quality (defined for birds studied in six or more years as the individual bird term in a GLM for productivity controlling for other factors) was not correlated with lifespan or other demographic parameters, but high-quality birds were less prone to change mates and burrows than low-quality birds. We know of no previous study in which simultaneous effects of laying date, age and pair-bond duration on breeding performance were measured, while controlling for year, individual quality and terminal illness.  相似文献

This paper reports on a three year study describing cooperative breeding and demography of a sampled population of approximately 108 colour-marked White-browed Sparrow Weavers in Zambia. Twenty-seven communal groups with two to 11 individuals in a group made up this population and occupied a l km2 area of mopane woodland. Each group had only a single reproductive pair and the pair-bond appeared strong. Non-reproductives were generally siblings or half-siblings and they contributed a major share of nestling feeding, nest building, intruder chasing and guarding. Groups cooperatively built nests in certain preferred trees and they maintained their nests year round. Feeding range encircled the nesting site and was used almost exclusively by the communal group. Overall population density was relatively stable, and between-year variation in group size was significantly greater than within-year variation. Variation in annual reproductive success among groups was high and correlated positively with size. Mortality rates for nestlings, six-month-olds and juveniles were not correlated significantly with group size. Frequency of disappearance for reproductives of both sexes was correlated negatively with group size.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to use highly polymorphic microsatellite loci to estimate individual reproductive success in Atlantic salmon based on the number of surviving juveniles (young of the year) at the population level under natural conditions. We inferred reproductive strategies adopted by both sexes by applying a maximum likelihood method to determine parent-offspring genotype relationships. A high degree of variance in individual reproductive success for both males and females was revealed. The high number of mates used by both sexes is not concordant with previous behavioral studies proposing that females are mainly monogamous in this species. We found little evidence supporting the prediction from previous reports of a positive relationship between individual size and realized reproductive success for either males or females. For both sexes, however, there was a significant correlation between the number of mates and the number of offspring. These results indicate that this species' mating system is more flexible than previously thought and suggest that factors such as potential genetic benefits or environmental uncertainty may also be driving the evolution and the plasticity of mating systems in Atlantic salmon.  相似文献

Recent work suggests that sexual selection can influence the evolution of ageing and lifespan by shaping the optimal timing and relative costliness of reproductive effort in the sexes. We used inbred lines of the decorated cricket, Gryllodes sigillatus, to estimate the genetic (co)variance between age‐dependent reproductive effort, lifespan, and ageing within and between the sexes. Sexual selection theory predicts that males should die sooner and age more rapidly than females. However, a reversal of this pattern may be favored if reproductive effort increases with age in males but not in females. We found that male calling effort increased with age, whereas female fecundity decreased, and that males lived longer and aged more slowly than females. These divergent life‐history strategies were underpinned by a positive genetic correlation between early‐life reproductive effort and ageing rate in both sexes, although this relationship was stronger in females. Despite these sex differences in life‐history schedules, age‐dependent reproductive effort, lifespan, and ageing exhibited strong positive intersexual genetic correlations. This should, in theory, constrain the independent evolution of these traits in the sexes and may promote intralocus sexual conflict. Our study highlights the importance of sexual selection to the evolution of sex differences in ageing and lifespan in G. sigillatus.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to validate noninvasive endocrine monitoring techniques for Pampas deer and to evaluate seasonal changes in testicular steroidogenic activity and their correlation to reproductive behavior, antler cycle and group size. Thus, fecal samples, behavioral data and observations of antler status were collected at monthly intervals during 1 year from free-ranging Pampas deer stags (three radio-collared individuals and 15 random individuals) living in Emas National Park, Brazil (18 degrees S latitude). Fecal steroids were extracted using 80% methanol and steroid concentrations were quantified by a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Fecal testosterone concentrations peaked in December-January (summer), March (early autumn) and in August-September (winter-spring), with minimal values from April-July. Reproductive behavior had two peaks, the first in December-January, characterized by predominately anogenital sniffing, flehmen, urine sniffing, chasing and mounting behavior, and the second peak in July-September (behavior primarily related to gland marking). There were significant correlations between fecal testosterone and reproductive behavior (r=0.490), and between fecal testosterone and antler phases (r=0.239). Antler casting and regrowth occurred under low testosterone concentrations, whereas velvet shedding was associated with high concentrations of testosterone. We inferred that Pampas deer stags exhibited a seasonal cycle that modulated sexual behavior and the antler cycle, and we concluded that fecal steroid analysis was a practical and reliable non-invasive method for the evaluation of the endocrine status of free-ranging Pampas deer.  相似文献

Testosterone (T) is a critical endocrine factor for the activation of many aspects of reproductive behavior in vertebrates. Castration completely eliminates the display of aggressive and sexual behaviors that are restored to intact level by a treatment with exogenous T. There is usually a tight correlation between the temporal changes in plasma T and the frequency of reproductive behaviors during the annual cycle. In contrast, individual levels of behavioral activity are often not related to plasma T concentration at the peak of the reproductive season suggesting that T is available in quantities larger than necessary to activate behavior and that other factors limit the expression of behavior. There is some indication from work in rodents that individual levels of brain aromatase activity (AA) may be a key factor that limits the expression of aggressive behavior, and in agreement with this idea, many studies indicate that estrogens produced in the brain by the aromatization of T may contribute to the activation of reproductive behavior, including aggression. We investigated here in pied flycatcher (Ficedula hypoleuca) the relationships among territorial aggression, plasma T, and brain AA at the peak of the reproductive season. In a first experiment, blood samples were collected from unpaired males holding a primary territory and, 1 or 2 days later, their aggressive behavior was quantified during standardized simulated territorial intrusions. No relationship was found between individual differences in aggressive behavior and plasma T or dihydrotestosterone levels but a significant negative correlation was observed between number of attacks and plasma corticosterone. In a second experiment, aggressive behavior was measured during a simulated territorial intrusion in 22 unpaired males holding primary territories. They were then immediately captured and AA was measured in their anterior and posterior diencephalon and in the entire telencephalon. Five males that had attracted a female (who had started egg-laying) were also studied. The paired males were less aggressive and correlatively had a lower AA in the anterior diencephalon but not in the posterior diencephalon and telencephalon than the 22 birds holding a territory before arrival of a female. In these 22 birds, a significant correlation was observed between number of attacks/min displayed during the simulated territorial intrusion and AA in the anterior diencephalon but no correlation was found between these variables in the two other brain areas. Taken together, these data indicate that the level of aggression displayed by males defending their primary territory may be limited by the activity of the preoptic aromatase, but plasma T is not playing an important role in establishing individual differences in aggression. Alternatively, it is also possible that brain AA is rapidly affected by agonistic interactions and additional work should be carried out to determine whether the correlation observed between brain AA and aggressive behavior is the result of an effect of the enzyme on behavior or vice versa. In any case, the present data show that preoptic AA can change quite rapidly during the reproductive cycle (within a few days after arrival of the female) indicating that this enzymatic activity is able to regulate rapid behavioral transitions during the reproductive cycle in this species.  相似文献

The relationship between the ontogenetic pattern of sex steroids and the differentiation of sexually dimorphic song in canaries of both sexes was studied. Songs were recorded to assess the temporal course of different developmental stages. Song parameters such as length and frequency of tours were measured. Parallel to behavioural observations, all birds were bled regularly every 20–30 days from the age of 15 days to day 235. The plasma samples were analyzed by RIA to measure testosterone (T), dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and estradiol-17β (E2). The following results were obtained: 1) In young male canaries we distinguish three different stages of song development: subsong, starting at the age of 30 days, plastic song, and juvenile autumnal song finally giving way to the rigid and stable utterances of the reproductive period in next spring. During ontogeny the length and frequency of tours increase gradually. Female canaries were not observed singing regularly during their first year of life, whereas males sing very frequently. 2) Both sexes show tendencies to elevated titres of testosterone before the onset of juvenile moult. These titres correspond to those of paired males during the reproductive cycle. Song development is not correlated with the ontogenetic pattern of testosterone: the process of crystallization from the amorphic songs uttered by juveniles progresses gradually to the autumnal song in late autumn, when the titres of T in males are low (< 200 pg/ml). Female T and DHT levels during ontogeny correspond to those of the males. 3) There are sex differences in the estradiol pattern. Males show higher titres in several stages of development than females.  相似文献

The gulf of Gabès is well known for its multiple contaminations which are closely associated with the past and present industrial and anthropogenic activity. In order to evaluate in situ the cadmium bioaccumulation in the clam Ruditapes decussatus sampled in this area, we measured cadmium concentrations in the whole soft tissues and in the digestive gland during one year. Energy reserves (proteins, glycogen, lipids) were monitored during gametogenesis in the remainder (mantle, adductor muscle, foot, siphons) of clams. Sex steroids (progesterone, testosterone, estradiol-17beta) were also measured by radio-immunoassay (RIA) in the gonads. The results showed that cadmium varied according to the reproductive cycle. High values were recorded at the resting stage in both sexes, during the gamete development and maturation in males and at the ripening and partially spawn stages in females. No significant changes in protein levels were observed in both females and males. However, high levels of glycogen and lipid reserves were recorded during the gametogenesis activity (from the development to the partially spawn stages). For steroid analyses, the results showed no important changes in testosterone levels all along the reproductive cycle. Fluctuations of sex steroids (especially progesterone and estradiol-17beta) could suggest their possible role as endogenous modulators of gametogenesis in R. decussatus. Correlation matrix and multiple regression models were also proposed to describe negative and significant relationship between cadmium and (glycogen, progesterone, testosterone and estradiol-17beta). These correlations may suggest the involvement of cadmium in the dysfunction of energy status and the endocrine disruption which could impede reproduction.  相似文献

Four pairs of captive crowned lemurs (Lemur coronatus) were studied during their annual breeding season in order to obtain baseline data on their reproductive biology for comparison with other Lemur species and to enhance their captive breeding success. Vaginal smears, testicular measurements, and records of the Duke University Primate Center provided the presented data. During a single breeding season, females cycled an average of three times, with an average cycle length of 34 days. Cycles were detected between November and March. Vaginal estrus and copulations were limited to one day per cycle. After 125 days of gestation females gave birth to one or two young. Both sexes attained sexual maturity at an age of about 20 months. Mean male testis size peaked in late December; at the same time, three of the females experienced their first estrus. Based on all available data, there was a significant positive correlation between cycle length and gestation length in the genus Lemur.  相似文献

The trajectory of phenotypic evolution is constrained in the short term by genetic correlations among traits. However, the extent to which genetic correlations impose a lasting constraint is generally unknown. Here, I examine the genetic architecture of life-history variation in male and female gametophytes from two populations of the moss Ceratodon purpureus, focusing on genetic correlations within and between the sexes. A significant negative correlation between allocation to vegetative and reproductive tissue was evident in males of both populations, but not females. All traits showed between-sex correlations of significantly less than one, indicating additive genetic variance for sexual dimorphism. The degree of dimorphism for traits was significantly negatively associated with the strength of the between-sex correlation. The structure of genetic correlations among life-history traits was more divergent between the two populations in females than in males. Collectively, these results suggest that genetic correlations do not impose a lasting constraint on the evolution of life-history variation in the species.  相似文献

The reproductive cycle of the Australian sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon taylori, includes a temporary suspension of development at the commencement of embryogenesis termed embryonic diapause. This study investigated levels of 17β-estradiol (E2), testosterone (T) and progesterone (P4) in plasma samples of mature wild female R. taylori captured throughout the reproductive cycle and correlated them with internal morphological changes. Levels of T were elevated through most of the embryonic diapause period, suggesting a role of this hormone in the maintenance of this condition. Increasing plasma T concentrations from late diapause to early active development were associated with a possible role of androgens in the termination of embryonic diapause. As in other elasmobranchs, a concomitant increase of E2 with ovarian follicle size indicated a direct role of this hormone in regulating vitellogenesis, while a peak in P4 suggested this hormone is associated with preovulation and ovulation. Additionally, significant correlations between photoperiod or water temperature and maximum follicular diameter and hepatosomatic index suggest that these abiotic factors may also play a role triggering and regulating the synchrony and timing of reproductive events.  相似文献

Species in the Australian marsupial genus Antechinus exhibit a short annual mating period which is concluded by the abrupt death of all males. The timing of the annual rut within each of the ten described species varies little from year to year at any given locality, but for some species can differ by up to four months between locations. To determine the influence of photoperiod in regulating the precise interannual synchrony of mating and ovulation, we first investigated populations of each species at over 300 localities throughout their geographical ranges to identify the time of reproduction. We then compared the absolute photoperiod and the rate of change of photoperiod prevailing at the time of reproduction in all population localities. A different, and characteristic, rate of change of photoperiod was correlated strongly with the reproductive timing of four species; there was probably a correlation with reproduction in four more species, but sample sizes were small. For two species, there was no obvious photoperiodic correlation with time of reproduction. There was no evidence that absolute photoperiod or ambient temperature explained the synchrony or narrow timespan of reproduction among any species of Antechinus . Different species-specific ovulatory responses to photoperiod appear to separate the timing of reproduction in sympatric species, with the larger member of species pairs usually breeding first. We suggest that photoperiodic cues (1) allow females to produce young during seasons when food is most reliable and abundant and their energetic demands are maximal; (2) facilitate allochronic isolation between sympatric congeners, and (3) maximize body size differences and hence ecological separation between species.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 87 , 365–379.  相似文献
