Spawning migrations of the chub in the River Spree, Germany   总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
Out of 52 chub Leuciscus cephalus tagged with internal radio‐transmitters, 46 migrated to spawning grounds in the River Spree, Germany. All chub started their first spawning migration on 21–22 May in both years of study, 1995 and 1996. They arrived at three different spawning grounds within a day and left after 1 to 6 days to return to their original sites. On 17 and 18 June 1995 and 1996 chub started their second spawning migration with the same pattern as the first. About 60% of all migrating chub moved between 1 and 13 km upstream to the nearest spawning ground. Some exceptions were observed: a few chub did not use the nearest spawning ground, some chub used different spawning grounds at first and second spawning or moved downstream to a spawning ground. Spawning grounds were characterized by 0·4 m s−1 current velocity, shallow depth (0·1–0·8 m) and a stony bottom, where most eggs adhered.  相似文献

The ocean pout copulates through direct genital contact for internal fertilization. A complete spawning event consists of copulation, oviposition, and the female displaying parental care by wiping and wrapping herself around the eggs.  相似文献

Characteristics of the structure and function of male reproductive organs in the copulating sculpin Radulinopsis taranetzi were investigated based on histological observations. The male reproductive organs comprised three parts: a pair of testes, a seminal vesicle, and a penis. Germinal cells matured in cysts located in the small seminal lobules. Asynchronous spermatogenesis advanced rapidly from the posterior to the anterior region of the testes. After sperm matured in the posterior part of the testes, the seminiferous epithelium of the seminal lobules synthesized and secreted eosinophilic fluid that showed a positive periodic acid–Schiff (PAS) reaction into the seminal lobules. Spermatozoa excreted from the posterior part of the testes were stored together with the secretion in the seminal vesicle and showed no activity in the seminal fluid. Histological observations throughout the year suggest that the fluid is secreted and spermatozoa are stored in the seminal vesicles during February to July, which is presumably when mating occurs. The importance of testicular maturation and the secretion of eosinophilic fluid during this long reproductive period is also discussed.  相似文献

Parentage analysis, employing five hypervariable microsatellite markers, was used to follow spawning patterns of red drum Sciaenops ocellatus broodfish in two spawning tanks through most of a calendar year in a marine fish hatchery dedicated to stock enhancement. Five of six dams and all four sires spawned at least once during the year. Variation in dam and sire spawning incidence and in number of progeny produced per dam and per sire translated into reduced genetic effective size (Ne) per spawn by 40·6% in one tank and 50·8% in the other.  相似文献

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) are endangered in the wild and may no longer be imported into the United States. Of those animals presently in captivity, candidates for breeding programs must be identified to insure a self-sustaining captive population. Some have suggested that poor reproductive performance might be linked to the performance of abnormal behaviors. In Study 1, three institutions housing breeding colonies of chimpanzees (86 males, 103 females) surveyed their animals for abnormal behaviors, copulatory performance, and, for females, maternal competence. In neither sex was there a positive association between absence of copulation and the presence of any of 18 forms of abnormal behavior. No one abnormal behavior was positively associated with inadequate maternal performance. Contrary to expectations, in both sexes (significantly for females), copulators exhibited more forms of abnormal behaviors than did noncopulators. In contrast, good mothers did show slightly fewer different forms of abnormal behaviors than did inadequate mothers. No specific combination of abnormal behaviors was associated with lack of copulatory performance in either sex or with inadequacy of maternal behavior. Significant sex differences occurred only in 2 of the 18 abnormal behaviors (coprophagy and self-clinging), both with females showing the higher prevalence. In Study 2, the rate of rocking in 5 male and 14 female chimpanzees at the Primate Foundation of Arizona was found to be relatively high among some reproductively competent subjects. Some rocking had forms and contexts indicative of aggressive displays. We conclude that chimpanzees should not be disregarded as potential breeders or as candidates for resocialization and breeding programs solely because they exhibit abnormal behaviors. Anyone involved in assessing well-being needs to be aware of individual differences among animals in the stimuli that may elicit rocking behavior. If they are strangers, they may elicit display rocking which does not indicate a lack of well-being. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Evolutionary transitions among maternal, paternal, and bi‐parental care have been common in many animal groups. We use a mathematical model to examine the effect of male and female life‐history characteristics (stage‐specific maturation and mortality) on evolutionary transitions among maternal, paternal, and bi‐parental care. When males and females are relatively similar – that is, when females initially invest relatively little into eggs and both sexes have similar mortality and maturation – transitions among different patterns of care are unlikely to be strongly favored. As males and females become more different, transitions are more likely. If females initially invest heavily into eggs and this reduces their expected future reproductive success, transitions to increased maternal care (paternal → maternal, paternal → bi‐parental, bi‐parental → maternal) are favored. This effect of anisogamy (i.e., the fact that females initially invest more into each individual zygote than males) might help explain the predominance of maternal care in nature and differs from previous work that found no effect of anisogamy on the origin of different sex‐specific patterns of care from an ancestral state of no care. When male mortality is high or male egg maturation rate is low, males have reduced future reproductive potential and transitions to increased paternal care (maternal → paternal, bi‐parental → paternal, maternal → bi‐parental) are favored. Offspring need (i.e., low offspring survival in the absence of care) also plays a role in transitions to paternal care. In general, basic life‐history differences between the sexes can drive evolutionary transitions among different sex‐specific patterns of care. The finding that simple life‐history differences can alone lead to transitions among maternal and paternal care suggests that the effect of inter‐sexual life‐history differences should be considered as a baseline scenario when attempting to understand how other factors (mate availability, sex differences in the costs of competing for mates) influence the evolution of parental care.  相似文献

A 2 year (2000–2001) radio‐tagging study was undertaken to investigate the movements of 51 golden perch Macquaria ambigua in the Murray River at Nyah in north‐western Victoria, Australia. During the winter of both years, golden perch did not undertake movements >5 km and displayed strong home range fidelity. In the first year of the study there was an increase in the distance of golden perch movement during late spring which coincided with increasing water temperature and river discharge. Nineteen golden perch were tracked during this period, of which 10 travelled downstream between 11 and 290 km. Seven of these fish moved to an area below the junction of the Murray and Wakool Rivers. Five golden perch travelled upstream between 13 and 35 km, four of which travelled to an area around the junction of the Murray River and Speewa Creek. The remaining four golden perch undertook localized movements of <5 km. Many of the long distance movements undertaken in spring 2000 were rapid and 53% of these golden perch returned to within 3 km of their release locations, indicating homing behaviour. Given that the rapid movements of golden perch in spring coincided with the known spawning season of this species, these long distance movements may be associated with reproductive strategy.  相似文献

The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the seasonal timing and diel activity patterns of lacustrine brook charr when migrating to a lake outlet for spawning, and (2) the homing of reproducing individuals. In 1995, 745 individuals were captured while migrating to the spawning ground compared to 1148 in 1996. In both years, the sex ratio was not significantly different from 1:1 but females were significantly longer than males. The spawning migrations lasted about 48d and were more nocturnal (between 20:00 and 8:00h) than diurnal. The migration to the spawning ground began when water temperature decreased to 13°C and peaked when water temperature decreased from 11°C to 7°C. Peaks in migration activity were always preceded by a sudden decrease followed by an increase in temperature. The spawning migration lasted until the third week of October, when water temperature varied between 3°C and 8°C. Males, especially larger ones, arrived on the spawning ground before females in both years. The length of males migrating to the spawning ground decreased during the spawning season while the females' length showed no pattern. Only 9.7% of the 745 fin-clipped individuals from 1995 returned to the lake outlet to spawn in 1996. The results of this study indicate that lacustrine brook charr show similarities to other anadromous and lake-spawning salmonid populations when migrating to spawning grounds.  相似文献

Using a variety of sampling techniques and observations we describe aspects of the reproductive ecology and early life-history of Bear Lake sculpin, Cottus extensus, a species endemic to Bear Lake, Utah-Idaho. Adult sculpin spawned in shallow water (0.5–6.0 m depths) in cavities beneath large cobbles and boulders. During 1993, egg mass densities were highest (> 4.0 m2) at 1.0–2.0 m depths. Electivity indices verified substrate selection and also indicated an avoidance of s and- and gravel-embedded materials. During years of low water elevation, suitable spawning substrates were restricted to one or two limited areas of the lake and comprised < 0.004% of the total benthic area. Disturbance from turbulence, as would be produced by storm-induced waves, appeared to initiate hatching. After hatching, embryos passed through a pelagic interval that lasted for approximately one week. Laboratory experiments confirmed the short duration of this surface-swimming behavior. The pelagic behavior of free embryos appears to aid in dispersal of fish via currents from limited spawning habitats to areas throughout the 282 km2 lake.  相似文献

A mismatch in synchrony between male and female gamete release in external fertilizers can result in reduced or failed fertilization, sperm competition, and reduced paternity. In Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus), males can adopt either a guard or sneak tactic resulting in both pre‐ and postcopulatory competition between males with alternative reproduction tactics. Here, spawning behavior of free‐living Arctic charr was video‐recorded, and their reproductive behavior was analyzed. From evaluating 157 spawning events, we observed that females mainly spawned with a guarding male and that the female and the guarding male synchronized timing of gamete release under sperm competition. Although sneakers spawned with higher synchrony than the guarding male in single‐male spawning events, the average sneaker released his milt less synchronized with the female than the guarding male under sperm competition. Approximately 50% of the recorded spawning events occurred under sperm competition, where each event included an average of 2.7 males. Additionally, sneakers were more exposed to sperm competition than guarding males. An influx of males, in close proximity to the female, occurred during the behavioral sequences leading up to egg release, but this influx seemed not dependent on egg release, suggesting that something else than gonadal product attracts sneaker males to the spawning female. Just before and during the actual release of gametes, the spawning couple vibrates their bodies in close contact and it seems likely that this vibrational communication between the spawning couple, which results in a larger amplitude sound wave than seen under regular courting, reveals time of gamete release to sneaker males. Thus, vibrational communication may enable synchrony between the guarding male and the female, and this might be traded against the cost of higher detectability from surrounding sneaker males, eavesdropping in close proximity.  相似文献

The key elements of the flow regime of the Waipara River on the east coast of New Zealand, that affected fish abundances were the timing of floods and the magnitude and duration of low flows. Generally, fish abundances were highest in early summer, and lowest at the beginning of winter. Spring floods opened the river mouth, allowing recruitment of diadromous fish species, and non‐diadromous fish species spawned after the floods in spring or early summer. Reductions in fish abundances over summer and autumn were consistent with the magnitude and duration of low flows, with significant reductions in the year of lowest flow and little change in abundance in the year when low flows were highest. Variations in fish abundances during periods of low flow were consistent with the amount of instream habitat available, such that abundances of species with high velocity preferences decreased during periods of low flow, whereas abundances of species with low velocity preferences increased.  相似文献

We observed spawning behaviors of the haremic cleaner wrasse Labroides dimidiatus at a rocky reef in southern Japan. Females released pelagic eggs daily from June to September after a spawning ascent by pairs. When the high tide occurred between noon and evening (quarter moon to new or full moon), they spawned around the time of the tide providing fast offshore currents. For the rest of the lunar cycle, spawnings occurred during late afternoon independent of the state of the tide at the time of day. This spawning pattern is quite different from that of conspecifics on coral reefs that always spawn around the high tide at all lunar stages to avoid potential egg predators. The wrasse ascended high in the water column, probably because of its predator-immune characters as a cleaner. The steep slope of the study site seemed to contribute to releasing gametes far above aggregating planktivores. Thus, gametes were not subject to heavy predation. Current direction might not always affect survival of spawned pelagic eggs on the temperate reefs so crucially as it does on coral reefs. We conclude that spawning during unfavorable tidal conditions during the daytime may be better than spawning during the best tidal condition in the crepuscular period when predation pressure on adults will be high. Intraspecific variation in the timing and location of spawning of the wrasse may result from different conditions for larval survival. Spawning was observed in groups of captive Atlantic mackerel and occurred when a few fish swam away from the main school during a brief burst of high speed swimming. Counts of eggs from aquarium and field studies show that, in contrast to most pelagic fish species, spawning by Atlantic mackerel can occur at any time ofday or night and is not group-synchronized. Implications of the observed die1 periodicity of egg production to stock size estimation by the Daily Egg Production Method are discussed.  相似文献

Models of population dynamics generally assume that child survival is independent of maternal survival. However, in humans, the death of a mother compromises her immature children's survival because children require postnatal care. A child's survival therefore depends on her mother's survival in years following her birth. Here, we provide a model incorporating this relationship and providing the number of children surviving until maturity achieved by females at each age. Using estimates of the effect that a mother's death has on her child's survival until maturity, we explore the effect of the model on population dynamics. Compared to a model that includes a uniform child survival probability, our model slightly raises the finite rate of increase lambda and modifies generation time and the stable age structure. We also provide estimates of selection on alleles that change the survival of females. Selection is higher at all adult ages in our model and remains significant after menopause (at ages for which the usual models predict neutrality of such alleles). Finally, the effect of secondary caregivers who compensate maternal care after the death of a mother is also emphasized. We show that allocare (as an alternative to maternal care) can have a major effect on population dynamics and is likely to have played an important role during human evolution.  相似文献

The maternal and paternal behavior of Kerodon rupestris was examined. Quantitative differences between fathers and mothers and between mothers raising young with fathers present and with fathers absent were assessed. Growth rates of young raised by paired females and by lone females were compared. The male provides direct paternal care to the young by engaging in allogrooming, sniffing, and huddling. There is no significant difference between the sexes in the amount of contact promoting behavior given to the offspring, nor are the sexes significantly different in the amount of exploratory sniffing of the offspring. When the male is absent, the female spends a greater amount of time in contact with the young. Young raised by lone females gained significantly more weight than young raised by paired females. The suggestion that indirect paternal care acts to reduce female aggression to the young and relieve the energy expenditure burden of the female is discussed. The results indicate that social experience is gained at the expense of physical nurturing when the male is present.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between maternal behavior and infant disability in 12 mother-infant dyads for the first 5 weeks of infant life in the free-ranging Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) group on Awaji Island, Japan, from May to September 2001. Congenital limb malformations are prevalent in this population, and as such carry implications for behavior and conservation. We did not detect any differences in maternal activity budgets, mother-infant physical contact, infant holding, and overall nursing and infant transport time between mothers of non-disabled infants, disabled infants that were able to cling to their mothers, and disabled infants whose limb structure prevented clinging. Mothers of infants with limb malformations severe enough to prevent normal clinging behavior manually supported their infants during nursing and locomotion significantly more than other mothers did theirs. Increased support-carrying and support-nursing, and higher frequencies of holding the infant to one's ventrum, suggest that mothers of extensively malformed infants may be investing more to facilitate the survival of their offspring and that infant disability appears to be influencing maternal behaviors in this population.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal patterns of redd construction by Sakhalin taimen, Hucho perryi , were studied in small streams on northern Hokkaido, Japan. Spawning took place in late April with close relation to discharge patterns. Observed redd size (mean ± 95% C.I.) was 145 ± 11·8 cm in length and 84 ± 5·8 cm in width. The number of egg pockets per redd was either one or two, which is fewer than that of other salmonids reported in the literature. Spawning ground distributions in 1991 and 1992 were similar to each other in terms of the distribution mean and dispersion of the redds. Unlike other salmonids Sakhalin taimen probably constructed multiple redds during one spawning season.  相似文献

The morphology of female sperm storage during the spawning period and the morphology of sperm degradation after the spawning period were investigated by electron microscopy in a copulating teleost, Alcichthys alcicornis. The spermatozoa were maintained in the ovarian cavity, floating in the ovarian fluid during the spawning period. The spermatozoa then degenerated and were phagocytized by macrophages invading the ovarian cavity after the spawning period. In the ovary during the spawning period, horseradish peroxidase used as a tracer revealed tight junctional complexes connecting adjacent cells of the inner ovarian epithelia (ovarian wall epithelium and ovigerous lamella epithelium). This indicates that a compartmentalization of the ovarian cavity occurs during the spawning period. The junctional complexes were breached after the spawning period, as shown by the fact that horseradish peroxidase penetrated the ovarian cavity via the intercellular space between the adjoining ovigerous lamella epithelia. These results suggest that the spermatozoa in the ovarian cavity are isolated from the maternal immune system by the tight junctional complexes between the adjoining inner ovarian epithelia during the spawning period, and then are eliminated by immune cells following the breakdown of the junctional complexes after the spawning period.
