Traps have been used extensively to provide early warning of hidden pest infestations. To date, however, there is only one type of trap on the market in the U.K. for storage mites, namely the BT mite trap, or monitor. Laboratory studies have shown that under the test conditions (20 °C, 65% RH) the BT trap is effective at detecting mites for at least 10 days for all three species tested: Lepidoglyphus destructor, Tyrophagus longior and Acarus siro. Further tests showed that all three species reached a trap at a distance of approximately 80 cm in a 24 h period. In experiments using 100 mites of each species, and regardless of either temperature (15 or 20 °C) or relative humidity (65 or 80% RH), the most abundant species in the traps was T. longior, followed by A. siro then L. destructor. Trap catches were highest at 20 °C and 65% RH. Temperature had a greater effect on mite numbers than humidity. Tests using different densities of each mite species showed that the number of L. destructor found in/on the trap was significantly reduced when either of the other two species was dominant. It would appear that there is an interaction between L. destructor and the other two mite species which affects relative numbers found within the trap. The British Crowns right to retain a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence in and to any copyright is acknowledged. This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

The rate of population increase of three mite species, Acarus siro (L.), Lepidoglyphus destructor (Schrank) and Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), was studied on various types of barley and at various combinations of temperature and humidity. The mites were added into the chambers and incubated for 21 days on seven different kinds of barley coming from four sites, including six cultivars and a mixture. The population increase of all species was higher on the mixture than on any other cultivar, except for Sebastian and Calgary. The increase of mites was studied at constant temperatures ranging from 5 to 35 °C and relative humidity (RH) ranging from 50 to 90 %. Positive rate of increase was found above 70 % RH for all species. The optimal humidity was at 85 % RH for A. siro and L. destructor and at 90 % RH for T. putrescentiae. As concerns the temperature, positive rate of increase was found at temperatures higher than 10, 15 and 20 °C for A. siro, L. destructor and T. putrescentiae, respectively. The temperature optima were at 23, 25, and 30 °C for A. siro, L. destructor and T. putrescentiae, respectively. Model estimated on laboratory data was then fitted to temperature and humidity records from August to November in the Czech grain store. Estimated population rate of increase was rarely positive: for A. siro it was for 24 %, for L. destructor for only 1 % and for T. putrescentiae for only 7 % days of the study period. It is concluded that in the climatic conditions of the Czech Republic the population increase of three mite pests is negligible during autumn and winter.  相似文献

Every week, for 20 weeks, the growth of naturally occurring grain storage fungi on wheat infested with the three commonest British grain storage mites,Acarus siro, Glycyphagus destructor andTyrophagus longior, was compared with that on uninfested wheat. The number of colonies of theAspergillus glaucus group per gram were always less on grain infested with mites than on uninfested grain.Penicillium spp. were also less numerous on grain which was infested withA. siro but did not appear to be affected by the other mites. In contrast, two fungi which are pathogenic to mites,Aspergillus restrictus andWallemia sebi, were more abundant in the presence of certain mites. The former was associated withG. destructor, the latter withG. destructor andA. siro. The three species of mites either feed on theA. glaucus group andPenicillium spp., or inhibit them by an unknown secretion. Pathogenic fungi are probably avoided. Mites are therefore an important variable in studies on fungal growth during grain drying and storage.  相似文献

In storage facilities one can find grain either in stored grain mass or in grain residues in the store corners or machinery. Although it is claimed that grain residues are serious pest reservoirs since they harbor numbers of stored product arthropods and are connected via continuous emigration with grain mass, the documentation for this is not convincing. Therefore in 78 selected grain stores, we simultaneously sampled the grain mass and residues in order to compare concurrent mite communities in these two different habitats. We found 30 species in about 614 000 individuals in residues and 23 species in about 20 000 individuals in grain mass. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of transformed abundance data showed differences in the communities of mites in grain mass and residues: (i) species associated to grain residues (e.g. Tyrophagus longior, Tydeus interruptus, Acarus farris and Cheyletus eruditus) and (ii) species associated to both grain mass and grain residues (e.g. Tarsonemus granarius, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Lepidoglyphus destructor and Cheyletus malaccensis). Although the residue samples had more mites and higher species diversity than the stored grain mass, no correlation in mite abundance and species numbers between samples from grain residues and grain mass was found, thereby indicating low connectivity of these two habitats.  相似文献

Twenty bisected grains of wheat infested with five pairs of the three commonest British grain-storage mites,Acarus siro L., Glycyphagus destructor (Shrank) andTyrophagus longior (Gervais), were examined every week for 20 weeks. Mite populations, the resulting damage to germ and endosperm, and visible fungal growth were observed at 20°C and relative humidities (r.h.) of 90% and 75%.At 90% r.h.,A. siro populations reached nearly 14000 per test-tube before slowly dropping to 5000. The mites ate the germ before the endosperm, leaving an impenetrable layer of crushed endosperm cells between these regions. TheG. destructor population reached only 800 before declining to 300; these mites ate over 75% of the germ and small amounts of endosperm.Tyrophagus longior populations rose to 2200 mites before crashing at week 12 to the initial population level; these mites ate over 75% of the germ and small amounts of endosperm. At 75% r.h., bothA. siro andT. longior populations were lower than at the higher r.h., peaking at 3000 and 1000 respectively and decreasing to 500 and 600 mites respectively.Glycyphagus destructor did markedly better than at 90% r.h., reaching 1500 before falling to 400. The damage at this humidity was slower to occur but was similar to that at 90% r.h. at the end of 20 weeks. At both humidities visible fungus was always less abundant on infested grain that uninfested grain.  相似文献

Specific IgE against Acarus siro, Glycphagus domesticus, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, and Lepidoglyphus destructor have been investigated by ELISA in sera of 92 children. Of them, 41 were found to be specific IgE positive (≥ 0.35 IU/ml) against at least one of house dust mite species, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae, by an immunoblot. In 65.9% of the dust mite-sensitized children, specific IgE against at least one of these mite species was found. Sensitization levels, including co-sensitization cases were found to be 35.7% against A. siro, 24.4% against T. putrescentiae, 31.7% against L. destructor, and 26.8% against G. domesticus. In non-sensitized children, dust mite sensitization level was found to be 25.5%. Breakdown of sensitization by individual species in this group was; against A. siro and T. putrescentiae at 7.8%, against L. destructor at 13.7%, and against G. domesticus at 9.8%. When all children were reckoned, 43.5% was found to be sensitized against at least one storage mite species, with sensitizations against A. siro at 18.5%, T. putrescentiae at 26.1%, L. destructor at 21.7%, and G. domesticus at 17.4%. In dust samples collected from the dwellings of children, distribution of species was found to be A. siro (17%), G. domesticus (23%), T. putrescentiae (29%), L. destructor (25%), and unidentified (6%). In Fisher''s chi-square test on SPSS program, there was a relationship between dust mite sensitization and storage mite sensitization (P < 0.05), but no meaningful relationship was found on the basis of individual mite species.  相似文献

The pest potential of stored product mites depends on the reproduction rate that is affected by the environmental conditions. In this study we investigated the effect of temperature, ranging from 5 to 35°C, on the population growth of three important mite species, Acarus siro, Tyrophagus putrescentiae and Auleroglyphus ovatus at 85% r.h. Starting with 10 individuals the population increase of mites was observed after 3 weeks of cultivation, or after 6 weeks for those kept at low temperatures (5, 10, 12.5, and 15°C). The rate of increase was calculated for each temperature and species. The obtained data were fitted with polynomial models. The mite population growth rates increased with increasing moderate temperatures until 25°C, when r m -values were 0.179, 0.177 and 0.190 for A. siro, A. ovatus and T. putrescentiae, respectively. The lower development threshold was 10.2°C in all three species. Estimated upper temperature threshold was higher in T. putrescentiae (49°C) than in A. siro and A. ovatus (38°C). Simulation of the rate of population increase under ideal conditions, using real temperature records obtained from Czech grain stores, showed that the pest mite populations increase only during 3.5 months within a typical 9-month storage season in Central Europe. These results indicate that control of mites, be it chemical, physical or biological, is recommended during the months when allergens and pests are produced, i.e. from September to mid November and in May.  相似文献

The identification of allergy‐causing mites is conventionally based on morphological characters. However, molecular taxonomy using ribosomal DNA (rDNA) may be particularly useful in the analysis of mite cultures and purified mite fractions in the production of allergenic extracts. Full‐length internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) were obtained from Dermatophagoides farinae, Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides microceras and Euroglyphus maynei (Astigmata: Pyroglyphidae), Glycyphagus domesticus and Lepidoglyphus destructor (Astigmata: Glycyphagidae), Tyrophagus fanetzhangorum, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, Tyrophagus longior, Tyrophagus neiswanderi, Acarus farris and Acarus siro (Astigmata: Acaridae), and Blomia tropicalis (Astigmata: Echymopodidae), using mite‐specific primers. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products were digested with HpaII and RsaI restriction enzymes in order to produce species‐specific PCR restricted fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) profiles. A semi‐nested re‐amplification step was introduced before the RFLP in order to apply the method to environmental samples. Results demonstrate that rDNA sequences can be used for the unambiguous identification of mite species. The PCR–RFLP system allows the identification of species in purified mite fractions when the availability of intact adult mite bodies for morphological identification is limited. This reliable and straightforward PCR–RFLP system and the rDNA sequences obtained can be of use in the identification of allergy‐causing mite species.  相似文献

The egg production of isolated pairs ofAcarus siro, Glycyphagus destructor andTyrophagus longior fed on a control diet of wheatgerm and yeast was compared with that on mycelial pellets from shake cultures ofCladosporium cladosporiodes, Aspergillus repens, A. ruber andPenicillium cyclopium as well as spores ofP. cyclopium andA. repens. The mites always produced fewer eggs on the fungal diets than on the ideal diet.Tyrophagus longior usually did best of the three mite species on the fungal diets, andG. destructor worst.Aspergillus ruber proved the most suitable fungus for all mite species, whileC. cladosporiodes was the least suitable. Spores were a less suitable diet than mycelial pellets from shake cultures, which were predominantly mycelium.  相似文献

Residual populations of storage mites sheltering in crevices and cracks escape conventional control treatments and are implicated in the infestation of newly harvested grain. In a series of 24 h laboratory tests, the performance of solitary adults of two predatory mite species, Cheyletus eruditus (Schrank) and Blattisocius tarsalis (Berlese), were assessed for controlling small numbers of the flour mite Acarus siro (L.). Tests were carried out in the presence or absence of prey refuges or grain debris to afford shelter to the flour mites. While C. eruditus had a significant effect on the motile stages of A. siro, in contrast B. tarsalis had a significant effect on the eggs. The maximum percentage of motile stages of A. siro eaten by C. eruditus was 82%, whereas the minimum percentage of A. siro eggs eaten by B. tarsalis was 99%. While the performance of C. eruditus in predating on motile stages of the flour mite was hindered by the presence of the prey refuge (38% eaten) and grain debris (25% eaten), the performance of B. tarsalis in predating on flour mite eggs was unaffected (100% eaten in presence of prey refuge or grain debris). In prolonged exposures (36 days) the performance of 2, 4 or 8 adult predators, either a single species or a combination of both, was assessed for their ability to control a population of the flour mite developing up to F2 from an initial inoculum of 80 females and 20 males, allowed to oviposit for 72 h in the absence of predatory mites. The maximum reduction in prey population of 80% was achieved with eight B. tarsalis. Combining the two predatory species did not enhance the reduction of A. siro population.  相似文献

Two types of trap, the BT Trap and PCTM pitfall cone trap, were evaluated against the most widely used method of sampling and sieving for their ability to detect low numbers of storage mites (Acarus siro, Tyrophagus longior and Lepidoglyphus destructor) in bulk oilseed rape, under UK maritime conditions. In addition, a synthetic lure (2-nonanone) was incorporated into the two types of trap to assess whether its presence improved trapping performance. The BT traps and PC traps were significantly more effective in detecting low numbers of mites of all species compared with sampling and sieving. The PC trap with synthetic lure was the most effective method. As the PC trap is already widely used for monitoring insects in cereal bulks in the UK, extending its application to include oilseed rape, and to detect mites, would be a logical and cost effective extension of its use. Population dynamics and aggregation patterns of nine kinds of stored-grain mites were studied in two 7.5 tonne lots of hulled (cv. Random) and hulless (cv. Terra) oat cultivars with 12–14% moisture content stored in two wooden bins in Manitoba, Canada during 1978–84. Random oats harbored more mites than Terra oats. Lepidoglyphus destructor Schrank was the most common granivorous mite and Cheyletus eruditus Shrank the most common predatory mite. Ecological data on a tydeid mite, Paratriophtydeus coineaui André, are presented for the first time. Because they were more abundant in Terra oats with higher fat acidity values (FAV) than Random oats with lower FAVs, L. destructor and Tarsonemus granarius Lindquist could be used as bioindicators of spoilage of stored oats. All species analyzed showed some significant difference in their abundance at different depths in the grain bulk; some species showed depthxtime interaction. Aggregation patterns indicated most mite species had overdispersed (clumped) distribution. T. granarius, and Blattisocius keegani Fox-Androlaelaps casalis Berlese had a distinct aggregation pattern in each oat cultivar.  相似文献

Background

Bacteria are associated with the gut, fat bodies and reproductive organs of stored product mites (Acari: Astigmata). The mites are pests due to the production of allergens. Addition of antibiotics to diets can help to characterize the association between mites and bacteria.

Methodology and Principal Findings

Ampicillin, neomycin and streptomycin were added to the diets of mites and the effects on mite population growth (Acarus siro, Lepidoglyphus destructor and Tyrophagus putrescentiae) and associated bacterial community structure were assessed. Mites were treated by antibiotic supplementation (1 mgg−1 of diet) for 21 days and numbers of mites and bacterial communities were analyzed and compared to the untreated control. Bacterial quantities, determined by real-time PCR, significantly decreased in antibiotic treated specimens from 5 to 30 times in A. siro and T. putrescentiae, while no decline was observed in L. destructor. Streptomycin treatment eliminated Bartonella-like bacteria in the both A. siro and T. putrescentiae and Cardinium in T. putrescentiae. Solitalea-like bacteria proportion increased in the communities of neomycin and streptomycin treated A. siro specimens. Kocuria proportion increased in the bacterial communities of ampicillin and streptomycin treated A. siro and neomycin and streptomycin treated L. destructor.

Conclusions/Significance

The work demonstrated the changes of mite associated bacterial community under antibiotic pressure in pests of medical importance. Pre-treatment of mites by 1 mgg−1 antibiotic diets improved mite fitness as indicated accelerated population growth of A. siro pretreated streptomycin and neomycin and L. destructor pretreated by neomycin. All tested antibiotics supplemented to diets caused the decrease of mite growth rate in comparison to the control diet.  相似文献

To determine the effect of storage on fungal survival, mummified cadavers of the cassava green mite pathogen, Neozygites tanajoae were placed at different conditions of temperature and relative humidity. The best condition for long-term preservation was ?10°C. At this condition, the fungus retained viability for 10 years when the experiment was terminated, with a decrease in sporulation with time. Cadavers placed at 4°C and 5% RH sporulated for 2 years, while the fungus survived for only 7 days at 25°C and 50% RH.  相似文献

Population dynamics of stored-product mites   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Summary Population fluctuation patterns were determined during 1959–70 in wheat bulks in 2 granaries typical of those used on Manitoba farms for 7 kinds of mites. The patterns were bradly similar in the 2 granaries. Outbreaks of all mites except Tarsonemus granarius and Aëroglyphus robustus were unaffected by the prolonged storage of grain; those of Acarus siro and Cheyletus eruditus occurred in unusually high numbers periodically every 2–5 years, whereas Glycyphagus destructor and Androlaelaps casalis were present in relatively low numbers from the first year of storage. A rise in T. granarius population corresponded with grain age and the succession of microfloral species. Tydeid mites occurred periodically.Pricipal component analyses of up to 26 variates including various fungal species on one grain bulk ecosystem provided a kaleidoscopic view of interrelations and dynamics of acarine populations in the grain bulks. The combination of correlated variates of which mites are a part, varied from year to year.Four factors that regulate acarine numbers, particularly those of A. siro and its natural predator C. eruditus, were identified. These are: (i) basic determinants (moisture, temperature, food, and the intrinsic rate of increase of the species); (ii) the main regulator (temperature); (iii) influencers (seed cracks, microflora, dockage, etc.); and (iv) seasonal and cyclic regulators (seasonality in temperature and several density-dependent factors). Generalized diagrams of prey-predator interactions and multivariate interrelations of each kind of mite are presented.Contribution no. 568 from Research Station, Agriculture Canada, Winnipeg, Canada. Although specific IgE to the storage mite Acarus siro is often detected, there are no detailed studies on IgE reactivity to A. siro in Korea. This study was undertaken to investigate the cross-reactivity to the mite species Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides farinae, Tyrophagus putrescentiae, and A. siro in Korean mite allergic patients. Specific IgE values were determined for the four mite species and a competitive inhibition test was performed for mite extracts using the ImmunoCAP system. The IgE value to D. farinae was the highest among the four mite species tested. There was a strong correlation in the IgE value between house dust mites (D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae) and between storage mites (A. siro and T. putrescentiae). IgE reactivity to A. siro was inhibited by D. farinae and T. putrescentiae extract. Dermatophagoides farinae extract was the strongest inhibitor of IgE binding to A. siro extract, indicating that IgE reactivity to A. siro extract is a cross-reaction caused by sensitization to D. farinae. Strong IgE reactive components were observed in D. farinae and T. putrescentiae extract by SDS-PAGE and IgE immunoblotting. However, no strong IgE-binding component was observed for A. siro. Dermatophagoides farinae is the main source of mite allergens that cause sensitization in Korea. Serum IgE from some of the house dust mite-sensitized patients showed positive responses to storage mite allergens by cross-reaction. Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention to the diagnosis of mite allergies.  相似文献

Redlegged earth mite, Halotydeus destructor, is a major pest of pastures and crops in Australia, and also feeds on lower plants on the soil surface. Feeding behaviour is reviewed, and the role of Arctotheca calendula, capeweed, in determining occurrence and abundance in pastures is investigated. Mites fed more and produced more progeny on Trifolium subterraneum (subclover) than on capeweed in non-choice experiments. In pastures with mixed species three times more mites were feeding on subclover than on capeweed foliage. However, twice as many mites were found on the soil surface under pasture patches consisting mainly of capeweed than of subclover. Patches were selected on the basis of pasture height, irrespective of plant composition. Twice as many mites were found in populations under patches of tall than short pasture. The daytime relative humidity was higher in tall than short patches, and the temperature slightly lower, making tall patches a more favourable niche for these mites. Ninety per cent of H. destructor were on the soil surface, while 10% were feeding on the upper canopy of pasture. The proportion of each population that was feeding was greater on subclover than capeweed, and subclover was a more suitable food. In Australia H. destructor occurs in regions with mixed pasture species, grown in rotation with grain crops. The ability of H. destructor to utilize foliage of a range of plant species of differing suitability for food, while living mostly on the soil surface in niches favourable for survival, has enabled it to become very abundant.  相似文献

The dominance of the Pyroglyphidae in house dust has been influenced by a number of factors. The humidity in houses dropped recently to such an extent that only Pyroglyphidae can survive. When temperature and relative humidity are favorable for Acarus siro and Glycyphagus destructor as well as Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, Dermatophagoides diminished in numbers by competition. Introduction of the predator Cheyletus eruditus into this mixed breeds causes the extermination of Dermatophagoides. The vacuum cleaner trapped mites, but Dermatophagoides was protected by its habit to hide in cracks and crevices. The use of insecticides has a more killing effect on Acarus and Glycyphagus than on Dermatophagoides.  相似文献

The hygropreference of adult Onychiurus arcticus (Tullberg) was investigated over 2 h at 0, 10 and 20°C, along humidity gradients (12–98% RH) established using different salt solutions. At all temperatures O. arcticus preferred the highest humidity (98% RH). At 0 and 20°C, saturated conditions were preferred to 98% RH. The hygropreference of the mite Lauroppia translamellata (Willmann) was also assessed at 20°C, and no clear RH preference was observed. This species survived the loss of 24.9 ± 2.1% of its initial water content when held for 24 h at 20°C and 12% RH. A range of assays designed to eliminate the influence of thigmotactic behaviour and population clumping permit exclusion of these factors as being responsible for the observed results. The mean initial water content of O. arcticus samples (71.7 ± 10.9, 73.4 ± 4.0 and 73.8 ± 23.5% at 0, 10 and 20°C, respectively) did not differ significantly between temperatures, indicating that the results were not influenced by differences in initial hydrated state. The percentage water loss of individuals within the gradient increased with temperature, and differed significantly between regimes. The ecological significance of the observed humidity preferences are discussed.  相似文献

(1) Most ferns are restricted to moist and shady habitats, but it is not known whether soil moisture or atmospheric water status are decisive limiting factors, or if both are equally important. (2) Using the rare temperate woodland fern Polystichum braunii, we conducted a three‐factorial climate chamber experiment (soil moisture (SM) × air humidity (RH) × air temperature (T)) to test the hypotheses that: (i) atmospheric water status (RH) exerts a similarly large influence on the fern's biology as soil moisture, and (ii) both a reduction in RH and an increase in air temperature reduce vigour and growth. (3) Nine of 11 morphological, physiological and growth‐related traits were significantly influenced by an increase in RH from 65% to 95%, leading to higher leaf conductance, increased above‐ and belowground productivity, higher fertility, more epidermal trichomes and fewer leaf deformities under high air humidity. In contrast, soil moisture variation (from 66% to 70% in the moist to ca. 42% in the dry treatment) influenced only one trait (specific leaf area), and temperature variation (15 °C versus 19 °C during daytime) only three traits (leaf conductance, root/shoot ratio, specific leaf area); RH was the only factor affecting productivity. (4) This study is the first experimental proof for a soil moisture‐independent air humidity effect on the growth of terrestrial woodland ferns. P. braunii appears to be an air humidity hygrophyte that, whithin the range of realistic environmental conditions set in this study, suffers more from a reduction in RH than in soil moisture. A climate warming‐related increase in summer temperatures, however, seems not to directly threaten this endangered species.  相似文献
