Specimens of the estuarine prosobranch Ilyanassa obsoleta collected in the vicinity of Charleston, South Carolina, during June, July, and August 1981, were found to be parasitized by larvae of the digeneans Cercaria dipterocerca, Himasthla quissetensis, Lepocreadium setiferoides, Microbilharzia variglandis, Microphalloides nassicola, Stephanostomum tenue, and Zoogonus lasius. The aminopeptidase activity levels and the total protein concentrations of the hemocytes and sera of these infected snails were determined. It was ascertained that snails parasitized by larvae of L. setiferoides had significantly higher levels of hemocytic aminopeptidase activity and hemocytic total protein concentrations than noninfected snails. Furthermore, snails parasitized by L. setiferoides larvae had significantly higher hemocytic levels of aminopeptidase activity than snails parasitized by larvae of S. tenue, Z. lasius, M. nassicola, and H. quissetensis.  相似文献

Specimens of Biomphalaria glabrata were exposed to 0.06 ppm of copper in the form of CuSO4, and the resulting changes in the wet and dry weights of the soft tissues and in the osmolality of the hemolymph were measured. The wet weights of snails exposed to copper increased as a function of time, while those of the controls decreased. The dry weights of both the experimental and control snails decreased equally. Finally, the ratio of wet weight to dry weight of the experimental snails was significantly higher than that of the controls after 24 and 48 hr of exposure to copper. In addition, the osmolality of the hemolymph of snails exposed to copper was significantly lower than that of the controls after 12, 24, and 36 hr of exposure. These data have led to the conclusion that exposure of B. glabrata to copper results in an osmotic influx of water into its tissues and thereby causes death.  相似文献

Hemolymph glucose, alkaline phosphatase, lactic dehydrogenase, and creatine phosphokinase in Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Angiostrongylus costaricensis were significantly higher on day 27 postinfection (PI) than in uninfected snails. Hemolymph total calcium from infected snails was less on days 6, 12, and 27 PI than that from controls. Total hemolymph protein was similar for controls and infected animals during the entire study. Throughout the study the mean number of amoebocytes/mm3 hemolymph from infected snails was significantly less than that for controls. Mean total wet weights of digestive gland and foot muscle from infected and uninfected snails was similar throughout the study. Mean μg glycogen/mg wet weight of digestive gland from infected snails was significantly greater on days 24, 27, and 28 PI than that from controls. Mean μg glycogen/mg wet weight of foot muscle from infected snails was significantly reduced between days 12 and 28 PI from that of uninfected snails. It is suggested that hemolymph glucose and digestive gland glycogen in infected snails are augmented by glycogen breakdown in the foot muscle of parasitized animals. Elevations in hemolymph enzymes are due to tissue destruction by larvae emerging from the foot muscle of infected snails. Parasite-induced derangements in shell metabolism underlie observed changes in hemolymph calcium in infected snails.  相似文献

Nearly 2% of the specimens of the mudflat snail, Nassarius obsoletus, collected during June and July of 1972 from southern New Jersey has been found to be parasitized by sporocysts of the trematode Zoogonus rubellus. This parasite causes what is essentially total parasitic castration of this estuarine mollusc. The gonads of the hosts are almost completely absent and in their place, large, vacuolated Leydig cells fill the spaces not occupied by parasites on the periphery of the digestive glands. There is no doubt that the snails would have been sexually mature at the time of collection since all noninfected specimens included either fully developed ova or sperm. It is postulated that the destruction of the host's gonad has resulted from what is being designated as “direct chemical castration,” i.e., the sex cells are destroyed by some substance secreted by the parasite rather than as the result of direct mechanical damage.Since N. obsoletus also serves as the intermediate host for the avian schistosome Austrobilharzia variglandis, the etiologic agent for “swimmer's itch” in the same area, the potential importance of Z. rubellus as a biological control agent against A. variglandis is raised.  相似文献

Testes of nonparasitized Ilyanassa obsoleta were maintained in vitro in a modification of the medium originally devised by Burch and Cuadros [Nature (London)206, 637–638 (1965)] in order to ascertain whether a saline extract of the daughter sporocysts of Zoogonus lasius would cause the inhibition of spermatogenesis. This parasite is known to cause parasitic castration of I. obsoleta in nature. It has been ascertained that after 96 hr of incubation with the parasite extract the incorporation of [3H]thymidine is inhibited in some spermatogonia. This represents the first experimental evidence that some molecule(s) of parasite origin may be responsible for chemical parasitic castration.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake rates by Lymnaea palustris infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis and by noninfected controls were determined at 25, 30, and 35 C over 34-day periods. Significant decreases in oxygen uptake were noted from one day to the next for both infected and noninfected groups of snails. At 25 and 30 C groups of infected snails found to have high average larval recoveries frequently had significantly higher oxygen uptake rates than for corresponding groups of noninfected snails. At 35 C readings were less reliable due to an increase in mortality for both infected and noninfected snails. Respiratory rates were not significantly altered by increasing the temperature from 25 to 30 and 35 C.  相似文献

We investigated the foraging behavior of the mud snail, Ilyanassa obsoleta, and its consequences for macrobenthic community structure on mud flats on Long Island, NY, USA. Field sampling demonstrated strong spatial heterogeneity in the population densities of I. obsoleta. We experimentally tested three hypotheses: (i) I. obsoleta are strongly attracted to areas with high levels of detritus; (ii) local abundances of deposit-feeding annelids are limited by detritus; and (iii) the foraging activities of I. obsoleta negatively affects annelid assemblages. We manipulated the density of mud snails using inclusion fences and the levels of detritus using dried Ulva. Results showed that high densities of I. obsoleta were attracted to areas enriched with Ulva detritus. In addition, high densities of snails negatively affected abundances of annelids, with the opportunistic species, Capitella spp. and Paranais litoralis, being most affected. The addition of Ulva detritus had more specific effects on annelid assemblages. Only Capitella spp. showed a significant positive response, although previous evidence has demonstrated that higher experimental detrital inputs stimulated growth of other species of annelids and microphytobenthos. In an experimental treatment with enhanced detritus and low densities of snails, we found population abundances of opportunistic annelids (up to 200,000 m−2) substantially larger than has ever been recorded in 5 years of sampling. Because mud snails in natural areas actively search, locate and exploit areas with enhanced detritus and their foraging negatively affects abundances of opportunistic worms, I. obsoleta probably controls the upper limits of annelid abundance in the field. Foraging behavior of I. obsoleta therefore modulates spatial variation in benthic community structure in an environment where limiting resources are patchily distributed.  相似文献

We investigated interactions between two dominant invertebrate species of intertidal soft-sediment environments of the northwest Atlantic, the mud snail Ilyanassa obsoleta and the burrowing amphipod Corophium volutator, on a mudflat of the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada. Distribution of I. obsoleta on the mudflat was highly patchy and negatively correlated with density of C. volutator. Manipulation of snail density in cages showed that I. obsoleta influences C. volutator; specifically, increasing density of snails reduced density, increased patchiness in distribution, decreased recapture rates and decreased immigration of C. volutator. Ilyanassa obsoleta seems to be affecting C. volutator through an influence on survival rate and emigration rate, although temporal variation in these effects was observed. Given that both I. obsoleta and C. volutator show a preference for tide pools, an important microhabitat on mudflats, snails might have a profound impact on C. volutator population dynamics.  相似文献

Dried ground plant tissues from 20 leguminous species were mixed with Meloidogyne incognita-infested soil at 1, 2 or 2.5, and 5% (w/w) and incubated for 1 week at room temperature (21 to 27°C). Tomato (''Rutgers'') seedlings were transplanted into infested soil to determine nematode viability. Most tissues reduced gall numbers below the non-amended controls. The tissue amendments that were most effective include: Canavalia ensiformis, Crotalaria retusa, Indigofera hirsuta, I. nummularifolia, I. spicata, I. suffruticosa, I. tinctoria, and Tephrosia adunca. Although certain tissues reduced the tomato dry weights, particularly at the higher amendment rates (5%), some tissues resulted in greater dry weights. These non-traditional legumes, known to contain bioactive phytochemicals, may offer considerable promise as soil amendments for control of plant-parasitic nematodes. Not only do these legumes reduce root-knot nematodes but some of them also enhance plant height and dry weight.  相似文献

The threeAstarte species were studied in June 1983 at two sites in Kiel Bay, Süderfahrt and Schleimünde, at 20 m depth. Shell length to live wet weight correlations are given for all three species; forA. elliptica also shell-free dry weight, shell dry weight, ash-free dry weight of the soft body and ash-free dry weight of the shell are recorded as functions of the shell length. In the logarithmic length/weight regression analysis the coefficients of slope forA. elliptica andA. borealis are 3. ForA. montagui, that coefficient is significantly greater than 3. Weight conversion factors, calculated forA. elliptica, revealed a mean weight composition of 31.5 % water in the mantle cavity and tissue water, 64.5 % shell ash, 2.1 % organic content of shell, 1.7 % organic content of the soft body and 0.4 % ash of the soft body. An isometric growth of shell length and shell breadth is confirmed forA. borealis, whileA. montagui exhibits positive allometric shell growth and changes its shape during life.  相似文献

Lymnaea rubiginosa infected with 1 to 5 miracidia of Echinostoma audyi for 1, 2, 3, and 5 weeks, and snails infected with up to 10 or 20 miracidia for 3 weeks, were exposed to copper (Cu) as CuSO4 2 hr and allowed to recover 48 hr. In general, snails ininfected with up to 5 miracidia of E. audyi were no more susceptible to Cu than noninfected snails. Snails infected with up to 10 miracidia for 3 weeks were 1.3 times more susceptible to Cu than noninfected snails. However, snails infected with up to 20 miracidia for 3 weeks were not more susceptible to Cu, possibly because infection with such a large number of parasites eliminated the most susceptible snails from the population prior to exposure to Cu.  相似文献

Invertebrates in soft-bottom marine communities exhibit a range of responses to predators and competitors, including both emigration and avoidance. Corophium volutator (Pallas), a burrowing amphipod abundant in the upper Bay of Fundy, Canada, frequently interacts with the eastern mudsnail, Ilyanassa obsoleta (Say), as both species utilize similar habitats and food resources. Typically these interactions result in negative effects on C. volutator. There is evidence that Corophium species exhibit avoidance behaviour when interacting with other species, but whether such a response occurs in the presence of I. obsoleta is unknown. To investigate C. volutator response to I. obsoleta, total C. volutator abundance and vertical distribution within the sediment was examined in a field experiment involving I. obsoleta enclosures and exclosures at two mudflats in the upper Bay of Fundy. I. obsoleta densities were manipulated between June and August 2008 and their effects on C. volutator abundance and vertical distribution observed. Results varied between mudflats and C. volutator size classes. At Peck's Cove, total C. volutator abundance was largely unaffected by I. obsoleta. No size class exhibited a distribution shift in response to I. obsoleta, though both mid-sized individuals and adults occupied deeper layers of sediment late in the summer. Abundance of C. volutator in all size classes at Grande Anse was reduced in July in direct proportion to exposure to I. obsoleta, and adults occupied higher sediment layers in July when I. obsoleta were excluded, suggesting that I. obsoleta curtailed use of these upper layers. Juvenile abundance rebounded in August, possibly due to the mass dispersal of a newly produced juvenile cohort. Adults were reduced in all treatments in August, probably as a result of normal seasonal mortality. Differences in C. volutator responses between mudflats highlight the site-specific nature of such interactions.  相似文献

Populations of snails inhabiting areas with different historiesof Pb contamination differed in their deposition of Pb in shellrelative to soft tissues. Genetic variation, measured usingisozymes, was not related to Pb history nor geographic distancebetween populations. Shell characteristics were significantlydifferent among sites; shell dry weight was strongly relatedto soil calcium levels. Shells of snails from areas with longhistories of Pb contamination were significantly more robust(greater shell width/shell height ratio) than snails from otherlocations. H. asprsa adaptation to Pb contamination may involvesignificant changes in shell characteristics but these do notcorrelate with genetic traits assessed with allozymes (Received 29 December 1994; accepted 15 October 1995)  相似文献

We studied interactions between three organisms associated with a common gastropod of northern Atlantic shores, the periwinkle Littorina littorea: barnacle epibionts Balanus crenatus, a shell boring polychaete Polydora ciliata, and tissue invading trematodes which use the periwinkles as first intermediate host. Snails collected shortly after barnacle settlement with > 50% cover of barnacles had significantly higher infestation of shell boring worms compared to unfouled snails, while trematode infestation was similar. The result was the same at two sites, and we conclude that the worm P. ciliata facilitates barnacle fouling on snails. The reverse was also the case. In an experiment with 14 weeks of exposure, snail treatments with barnacle epibionts had a significantly higher P. ciliata load than unfouled and cleaned snails. Again, trematode infestations were similar. The reciprocal positive interactions between barnacle epibionts and shell boring worms on snail houses is regarded as a case of facultative mutualism. On the other hand, for the snail basibiont, both barnacles and shell boring worms exert strongly negative effects by reducing fecundity, growth, and survival, resulting in a vicious circle for the snails. The combined effects of these associated organisms may rival in importance any competitive or predacious effects on the host L. littorea.  相似文献

Lymnaea catascopium snails infected with Schistosomatium douthitti grew faster than uninfected control snails during the first 2 months postexposure, but thereafter grew more slowly, and by 8 months postexposure were significantly smaller. When reared in isolation, uninfected snails survived significantly longer (mean survival time, 515 days) than snails exposed to three miracidia each (400 days), which in turn survived longer than snails exposed to 10 miracidia per snail (223 days). When maintained in aquaria in contact with other snails, snails exposed to three miracidia each survived longer (227 days), but not significantly longer, than control snails (198 days). Production of large numbers of eggs by control snails grown under the latter conditions may account for their reduced survival. The ovotestes and accessory genitalia of snails infected with S. douthitti were much reduced in size in comparison with uninfected control snails. These effects were most pronounced in snails which had been infected for over 100 days. Egg production was normally totally inhibited if snails were infected before the onset of sexual maturity. If infected after the onset of maturity, eggs were produced only during the prepatent period.  相似文献

Laboratory investigations were carried out to determine the growth rate, glycogen content of different body parts and glucose uptake in normal and schistosome-infected Biomphalaria alexandrina snails over a period of 45 days post infection. Infected snails grew at a faster rate. There were no significant differences in tissue water content and tissue dry weight of control and infected ones. A marked decrease in the glycogen content of female sex organs, mantle, digestive gland and muscles was observed in infected snails. Glucose utilization was also increased in infected snails.  相似文献

The dry weight, hemolymph soluble protein composition, and content of three species of mosquitoes, Culex pipiens, Aedes taeniorhynchus, and Anopheles quadrimaculatus were examined to determine the effects of parasitism by the mermithid nematode Romanomermis culicivorax. The dry weights of infected fourth-stage larvae of all three species were significantly lower than controls. The differences in weight found between infected early and late C. pipiens and A. quadrimaculatus larvae were attributed to the weight of the parasite itself. This difference was not noticeable in A. taeniorhynchus larvae. Hemolymph proteins were severely depleted in all three mosquito species during parasitism by R. culicivorax. Analysis of protein composition by PAGE showed that these depletions were accompanied by a reduction in the number of proteins. Differences between protein composition concentrations were evident between early and late fourthstage control larvae of C. pipiens and A. quadrimaculatus. The concentration of some low-molecular-weight proteins (below 68,000) remained constant between infected and control samples of all three mosquito species.  相似文献

The total protein concentrations in the hemolymph of noninfected Biomphalaria glabrata and those parasitized by Schistosoma mansoni have been compared. That of the former, averaging 1.42 g/100 ml, is greater than that of the latter which averages 0.96 g/100 ml. The hemoglobin concentrations in the two categories of snails have also been compared and that in noninfected specimens, averaging 0.956 g/100 ml, is higher than that in infected snails which average 0.650 g/100 ml. It has also been ascertained that both the total protein and hemoglobin concentrations in snails of different sizes vary; specimens measuring between 10 and 16 mm in diameter tend to include more hemoglobin than larger ones. On the other hand, larger snails tend to include greater total protein concentrations.  相似文献

Biomphalaria sudanica (intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni) were raised in the laboratory in media with seven different calcium concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 2.0 mmol/l. After 10 weeks, snails were killed and shell diameter, inorganic dry weight, ash free dry weight and crushing resistance were measured. Snails raised at lower calcium concentrations were found to be significantly smaller than snails raised at higher concentrations. Furthermore, relatively thinner shells were developed at low concentrations and crushing resistance relative to snail size was found to be lower for these snails. The ratio between crushing resistance and ash free dry weight (as a measure for the energetic cost/benefit-ratio) was also found to be correlated with calcium concentration. The relevance of the results for predation risk of B. sudanica is discussed.  相似文献

Eastern mud snails, Ilyanassa obsoleta (Say), in densities of 0, 80, and 160 snails · m?2 were placed in flow-through laboratory microcosms containing 5 cm of frozen and sieved sediments. Other microcosms were raked once daily to a depth of 10 mm. All these containers were incubated for 5 wk and regularly sampled for plant pigments and light and dark transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Feeding at the low density significantly increased chlorophyll standing stock. Respiration and gross photosynthesis increased by an even greater percentage compared to ungrazed controls. Standing stocks of algal pigments, respiration, and photosynthesis were depressed in microcosms which received the 160-snail or raking treatments. The dominant benthic algae in the containers were pennate diatoms. Grazed containers contained a larger percentage of non-motile as compared to motile forms.Sediments fertilized with ammonium at a rate equivalent to excretion of six snails, showed increased chlorophyll content equal to the 80-snail treatment. Daily raking inhibited this effect. We conclude that low densities of Ilyanassa obsoleta stimulate algal growth by accelerating nitrogen cycling and selectively removing specific components of the diatom community. At high snail densities these effects are overwhelmed by overgrazing and sediment stirring.  相似文献
