The need for an easy to fabricate perfect and narrowband light absorber in the visible range of electromagnetic (EM) spectrum has always been in demand for many scientific and device applications. Here, we propose a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) 1-D grating plasmonic structure as a perfect narrow band light absorber in the visible and its application in glucose detection. The proposed structure consists of a 1- D grating of gold on the top of a dielectric layer on a gold film. Optimization for dielectric grating index (n), grating thickness (t), grating width (W), and grating period (P) has been done to improve the performance of plasmonic structure by calculating its quality factor and figure-of-merit (FOM). The optimized plasmonic structure behaves as a perfect narrowband light absorber. The flexibility to work at a specific wavelength is also offered by the proposed structure through an appropriate selection of the geometrical parameters and refractive index of the dielectric grating. The equivalent RC model is used to understand different components of the proposed structure on the optical response. The absorption response of the structure is invariant to the incident angle. Moreover, the calculated absorbance of the proposed plasmonic structure is ~ 100% with a narrow full-width half maxima (FWHM) of ~ 2.8 nm. We have numerically demonstrated a potential application of the proposed MDM absorber as a plasmonic glucose sensor in the visible range with detection sensitivity in the range of 140 to 195 nm/RIU.

In this paper, we demonstrate a dual-band metamaterial perfect absorber based on a Ag-dielectric-Ag multilayer nanostructure. The structure of top metal film covers nanoring grooves array. A dielectric layer has a function of confining electromagnetic fields. Theoretical analysis shows that two absorption peaks (1059 nm and 1304 nm) with the absorption of 99.2% and 99.9% have been achieved, respectively. The physical origin of perfect absorption peaks are related to the Fabry-Perot resonance effect and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the nanoring grooves. Its perfect absorption and resonance wavelength can be well regulated by adjusting the relevant structural parameters. Additionally, the absorber demonstrates good operation angle-polarization-tolerance at wide incident angles (0–60°). We believe that our design has a promising application in plasmon-enhanced photovoltaic, optical absorption switching, and modulator optical communications in the infrared regime.

A three-dimensional cross-shaped fractal metamaterial absorber with ultra-wide wavelength band, polarization-independence and wide-angle, is numerically investigated by the finite-difference time-domain method. In this absorber, the solar energy is trapped by the cross-shaped fractal of the upper layer, and the Si-ring filled with iron in the middle layer and the wavelength band can be broadened by the self-similarity of fractal structure. The absorber exhibits absorptivity higher than 91% for the wavelengths from 400 to 2000 nm and an absorption bandwidth of about 133%. Furthermore, the proposed absorber realizes polarization independence, and the maximum incident angle is 76°. However, as the iron material applied in the nano-metamaterial absorber (NMA) can be easily oxidized and rusted, it is replaced by nickel with characteristics such as corrosion resistance and high-temperature resistance; thus, an improved NMA is obtained. The improved absorber not only eliminates the corrosion-prone defects of the above proposed structure but also maintains polarization independence and high absorption and widens the angle of incidence up to 79° and thereby can be applied in many areas, such as solar energy harvesting.

In this study, we present a high-performance tunable plasmonic absorber based on metal-insulator-metal nanostructures. High absorption is supported over a wide range of wavelengths, which is retained well at a very wide range of incident angles too. The coupling process occurs with high absorption efficiency of ∼ 99% by tuning the thickness of the dielectric layer. In addition, a complex trapezoidal nanostructure based on simple metal-insulator-metal structures by stacking different widths of Cu strip-nanostructures in the vertical direction has been put forward to enhance light absorption based on selective absorption. A trapezoidal sample has been designed with a solar absorption as high as 95% at wavelengths ranging from 300 nm to 2000 nm for different operating temperatures. Furthermore, the optical absorber has a very simple geometric structure and is easy to integrate into complex photonic devices. Perfect absorption and easy fabrication of the metal-insulator-metal structure make it an attractive device in numerous photonic applications.

In this paper, a graphene-based tunable multi-band terahertz absorber is proposed and numerically investigated. The proposed absorber can achieve perfect absorption within both sharp and ultra-broadband absorption spectra. This wide range of absorption is gathered through a unique combination of periodically cross- and square-shaped dielectrics sandwiched between two graphene sheets; the latter enables it to offer more absorption in comparison with the traditional single-layer graphene structures. The aforementioned top layer is mounted on a gold plate separated by a Topas layer with zero volume loss. Furthermore, in our proposed approach, we investigated the possibility of changing the shapes and sizes of the dielectric layers instead of the geometry of the graphene layers to alleviate the edge effects and manufacturing complications. In numerical simulations, parameters, such as graphene Fermi energy and the dimensions of the proposed dielectric layout, have been optimally tuned to reach perfect absorption. We have verified that the performance of our dielectric layout called fishnet, with two widely investigated dielectric layouts in the literature (namely, cross-shaped and frame-and-square). Our results demonstrate two absorption bands with near-unity absorbance at frequencies of 1.6–2.3 and 4.2–4.9 THz, with absorption efficiency of 98% in 1.96 and 4.62 THz, respectively. Moreover, a broadband absorption in the 7.77–9.78 THz is observed with an absorption efficiency of 99.6% that was attained in 8.44–9.11 THz. Finally, the versatility provided by the tunability of three operation bands of the absorber makes it a great candidate for integration into terahertz optoelectronic devices.

In this paper, a non-structured graphene sheet loaded with a sinusoidal-patterned dielectric is introduced as an ultra-wideband metamaterial absorber in terahertz regime. Regardless of conventional structures with multilayered-graphene, a single layer sheet of non-structured graphene is used whereas the proposed structure benefits from dielectric width modulation and cavity method in order to excite continuous graphene plasmon resonances. The structure comprises four layers that two Fabry-Perot cavity mirrors are constructed by upper sinusoidal-patterned dielectric and a gold film. Full wave simulation results demonstrate that a broadband over 90% absorption with absolute bandwidth of 6.58 THz and central frequency of 3.97 THz is achieved under normal TE/TM incident plane wave. The designed structure yields 166% relative bandwidth. According to the symmetric configuration, the absorption spectra of mentioned polarizations are thoroughly close to each other resulting to a polarization insensitive structure. The stability of bandwidth and absorbance of the structure versus angle of incidence, θ, up to 35°/65° for TM/TE polarizations, respectively, and azimuth angle, φ, shows an interesting capability for utilization as detectors and sensors. The simple geometry of utilized graphene layer results in easy fabrication. The designed structure has wideband absorption in THz regime. Moreover, it is more compact than conventional broadband THz absorbers.

We demonstrate a broadband absorber using random structures on refractory plasmonic material. The random microstructure is fabricated by femtosecond laser on tungsten and characterized with surface roughness which described by root mean square (RMS) and correlation length. Results show that the absorption efficiency of random microstructure with RMS of 0.8 μm and correlation length of 0.55 μm is over 90 % in the wavelength range from 200 to 1100 nm. However, the sample with surface structure RMS of 0.08 μm has much lower absorption (less than 70 % for λ > 600 nm). Numerical simulations agree well with the experimental results and illustrate that the structure with 0.8-μm RMS and 0.55-μm correlation length has the cut-off wavelength of 2400 nm which prevents mid-infrared emission. The possibility of realizing broadband absorption by using random structures presents a flexible and efficient way for solar cell, thermophotovoltaics, and energy harvesting.

In this paper, Tamm plasmons with topological insulators in a composite structure consisting of Bi2Se3, spacer layer, and one-dimensional photonic crystal (1DPC) have been demonstrated theoretically. The perfect absorption has been realized in the terahertz regime because of the optical Tamm states (OTSs) excited at the interface between Bi2Se3 and 1DPC. The perfect absorption can be realized for both TE and TM waves, and it is noted that the perfect absorption can be obtained at any incident angle by simultaneously changing the wavelength of incident light for TE-polarizations. Moreover, the perfect absorption can be realized at different wavelengths with the change of the chemical potential and the thickness of Bi2Se3. The thickness and the dielectric constant of the spacer layer will also play a vital role in the performance of the perfect absorber. Especially, the multichannel perfect absorption phenomenon can be achieved by choosing the appropriate thickness of the spacer layer. This tunable and multichannel terahertz perfect absorber has great application potential in the solar energy, photodetection, and THz biosensor.

The influence of TiO2 coating on resonant properties of gold nanoisland films deposited on silica substrates was studied numerically and in experiments. The model describing plasmonic properties of a metal truncated nanosphere placed on a substrate and covered by a thin dielectric layer has been developed. The model allows calculating a particle polarizability spectrum and, respectively, its surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength for any given cover thickness, particle radius and truncation parameter, and dielectric functions of the particle, the substrate, the coating layer, and the surrounding medium. Dependence of the SPR position calculated for truncated gold nanospheres has coincided with the measured one for the gold nanoisland films covered with titania of different thicknesses. In the experiments, gold films with thickness of 5 nm were deposited on a silica glass substrate, annealed at 500 °C to form nanoislands of 20 nm in diameter, and covered with amorphous titania layers using atomic layer deposition technique. The resulting structures were characterized with scanning electron microscopy and optical absorption spectroscopy. The measured dependence of the SPR position on titania film thickness corresponded to the one calculated for truncated sphere-shaped nanoparticles with the truncation angle of ~50°. We demonstrated the possibility of tuning the SPR position within ~100 nm range by depositing to 30 nm thick titania layer.

The design of thin-film semiconductor absorbers is a long-sought-after goal of crucial importance for optoelectronic devices. We propose a new strategy that achieves multi-band optical absorption in an ultra-thin semiconductor-insulator-metal nanostructure. The whole thickness of the absorber is just 60 nm, which is less than λ/12. The ultra-thin semiconductor resonators are used as the photonic coupling elements. The plasmonic metal layer with the thickness about 15 nm simultaneously acts as the transmission cancel layer and the plasmon source for resonant coupling with the optical near-field energy. The combined semiconductor resonators and the thin metal film produce strong electromagnetic field coupling and confinement effects, which mainly contribute to the efficient light trapping for the multi-band strong light absorption. The semiconductors such as Si, GaAs, and Ge are confirmed with the capability to show high light absorption via this simple hybrid metal-semiconductor resonant system. These features pave new insight on ultra-thin semiconductor absorbers and hold potential applications for optoelectronics such as nonlinear optics, hot-electron excitation and extraction, and the related devices.

Graphene can be utilized as a tunable material for a wide range of infrared wavelength regions due to its tunable conductivity property. In this paper, we use Y-shaped silver material resonator placed over the top of multiple graphene silica-layered structures to realize the perfect absorption over the infrared wavelength region. We propose four different designs by placing the graphene sheet over silica. The absorption and reflectance performance of the structures have been explored for 1500- to 1600-nm wavelength range. The proposed design also explores the absorption tunability of the structure for the different values of graphene chemical potential. We have reported the negative impedance for the perfect absorption for proposed metamaterial absorber structures. All the metamaterial absorbers have reported 99% of its absorption peaks in the infrared wavelength region. These designs can be used as a tunable absorber for narrowband and wideband applications. The proposed designs will become the basic building block of large photonics design which will be applicable for polariser, sensor, and solar applications.

A new strategy for realizing ultra-narrowband plasmonic absorber has been theoretically demonstrated. Dual-band perfect light absorber with the bandwidth down to single digit level and the maximal absorption exceeding 99.2 % is achieved. Moreover, novel absorber-based sensor platform with high-quality factors (S?>?420 nm/RIU, FOM?>?84, and FOM*?>?5600) are obtained. These features hold the proposed absorber to be a feasible candidate for applications in the sensing detection and notch filtering.  相似文献

Highly sensitive surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor consisting of Ag-Pt bimetallic films sandwiched with 2D materials black phosphorus (BP) and graphene over Pt layer in Kretschmann configuration is analyzed theoretically using the transfer matrix method. Numerical results show that upon suitable optimization of thickness of Ag-Pt layers and the number of layers of BP and graphene, sensitivity as high as 412°/RIU (degree/refractive index unit) can be achieved for p-polarized light of wavelength 633 nm. This performance can be tuned and controlled by changing the number of layers of BP and graphene. Furthermore, the addition of graphene and heterostructures of black phosphorus not only improved the sensitivity of the sensor but also kept the FWHM of the resonance curve much smaller than the conventional sensor utilizing Au as plasmonic metal and hence improved the resolution to a significant extent. We expect that this new proposed design will be useful for medical diagnosis, biomolecular detection, and chemical examination.

A multifunction plasmonic metasurface made of metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) layers is designed, and its chiral, absorption, and refractive index sensing properties are studied numerically using finite difference time domain (FDTD) computation. Top layer of the proposed novel metasurface consists of four L-shape gold strips arranged in a specific orientational sequence into a square unit cell whose period (along X direction and Y direction) is varied from 800 to 1400 nm in a step of 200 nm. The proposed super-structure shows highly chiral behaviour with multi bands circular dichroism (CD) between ~ 600 and 1200 nm with highest CD value of about 0.4. The CD spectral response is seen to be tunable with the structural parameters such as periods and appropriate L-strip length. True chiral nature of the proposed structure is cross-checked by computing its enantiomer that shows a mirror reflection of CD response of the original structure. Multi-work functionalities are investigated by studying perfect absorption and refractive index sensing properties of the metasurface. The study shows polarization independent multi-resonance spectral absorption that reaches to ~ 100% in some cases. On the other hand, refractive index sensing study shows high sensitivity (S) of 700–750 nm/RIU (per refractive index unit) with figure of merit (FOM) of 5–10. Owing to its exotic optical properties, the novel metasurface may be considered for chip level integration for multi-purpose work functionalities.

Three layers of periodic artificial metamaterial sensing structure (including the upper metal particles, intermediate dielectric layer, and the lower reflective layer) with ultra-narrow band absorption were designed. The resonance characteristics and sensing properties were analyzed by the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The effect of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) was obviously observed at the resonance wavelength of 911 nm, and it achieves nearly perfect absorption of exceeding 98% with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of 3.5 nm. In addition, a wavelength sensitivity of 542 nm/RIU with a figure of merit (FOM) of 155 was obtained in the refractive index (RI) range from 1.00 to 1.35, which has a wide range of applications. The results show that the proposed structure has high absorption and RI sensitivity, which is suitable for bioengineering and medical detection.

In the few past years, the economic and eco-friendly Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) solar cells have caught lots of attentions. However, due to rather poor efficiency, identifying deficiencies and making improvements is necessary. In the present study, the performance improvement of ultrathin CZTS solar cells was achieved through (1) incorporation of anti-reflective coating (ARC) on the surface of cell and (2) embedding Al plasmonic nanostructures with different radius, periods, and vertical positions in the absorber layer. Various thicknesses of CZTS absorber layer were simulated optically and electrically using FDTD and DEVICE solver of Lumerical software. The reference solar cell consists of a 1.5-nm-thick CZTS absorber and exhibit an efficiency of up to 5.67%, short-circuit current density (Jsc) of 18.48 mA cm−2 and open circuit voltage of 0.58 V. Result showed a remarkable performance enhancement of the solar cell in spite of a very thin absorber layer. For a 500-μm-thick CZTS solar cell with the assistance of ARC and embedding Al plasmonic nanostructures, the efficiency is increased to 7.45% due to an increase in Jsc to 22.62 mA cm−2 with an open circuit voltage of 0.62 V.

We present a multi-band terahertz absorber formed by periodic square metallic ribbon with T-shaped gap and a metallic ground plane separated by a dielectric layer. It is demonstrated that absorption spectra of the proposed structure consist of four absorption peaks located at 1.12, 2.49, 3.45, and 3.91 THz with high absorption coefficients of 98.0, 98.9, 98.7, and 99.6%, respectively. It is demonstrated that the proposed absorber has the tunability from single-band to broadband by changing the length of square metallic ribbon and we can also select or tune the frequencies which we want to use by changing polarization angles. Importantly, the quality factor Q at 3.91 THz is 30.1, which is 5.6 times higher than that of 1.12 THz. These results indicate that the proposed absorber has a promising potential for devices, such as detection, sensing, and imaging.

We demonstrate the optical response of metal nanoparticles and their interaction with organic-inorganic perovskite (methyl ammonia lead halide (CH3NH3PbI3)) environment using discrete dipole approximation (DDA) simulation technique. Important optical properties like absorption, scattering, and electric field calculations for metal nanoparticle using different geometry have been analyzed. The metal nanoparticles embedded in the perovskite media strongly support surface plasmon resonances (SPRs). The plasmonic interaction of metal nanoparticles with perovskite matrix is a strong function of MNP’s shape, size, and surrounding environment that can manipulate the optical properties considerably. The cylindrical shape of MNPs embedded in perovskite environment supports the SPR which is highly tunable to subwavelength range of 400–800 nm. Wide range of particle sizes has been selected for Ag, Au, and Al spherical and cylindrical nanostructures surrounded by perovskite matrix for simulation. The chosen hybrid material and anisotropy of structure together make a complex function for resonance shape and width. Among all MNPs, 70-nm spherical silver nanoparticle (NP) and cylindrical Ag NP having diameter of 50 nm and length of 70 nm (aspect ratio 1.4) generate strong electric field intensity that facilitates increased photon absorption. The plasmonic perovskite interaction plays an important role to improve the absorption of photon inside the thin film perovskite environment that may be applicable to photovoltaics and photonics.

A tunable multi-band metamaterial perfect absorber is designed in this paper. The absorber made of a composite array of gold elliptical and circular disks on a thick metallic substrate, separated by a thin dielectric spacer. The absorptivity and the field enhancement of proposed structures are numerically investigated by the finite difference time domain method. Three absorption peaks (1.15, 1.55, and 2.05 μm) with the maximal absorption of 99.2, 99.7, and 97.3% have been achieved, respectively. By altering the dimensions of associated geometric parameters in the structure, three resonance wavelengths can be tuned individually. Physical mechanism of the multi-band absorption is construed as the resonance of magnetic polaritons. And the absorber exhibits the characteristics that are insensitive to the polarization angle due to its symmetry. The research results can have access to selective control of thermal radiation and the design of multi-band photodetectors.

In this paper, a plasmonic perfect absorber (PPA) based on metal-insulator-metal-insulator-metal (MIMIM) structure has been designed for refractive index sensing of glucose solutions (analyte) and then a new method has been proposed for fast, low-cost, and easy measurement of sensor’s sensitivity. Simulation results show that the absorption spectrum of the proposed sensor has two resonance peaks that with an increase in analyte refractive index, both of them are red-shifted. In our proposed measurement technique, two conventional single-wavelength lasers (with wavelengths of 1050 nm and 1750 nm) are used for vertical plane wave light illumination on the structure. Then, the absorbed powers at 1750 nm (A2) and 1050 nm (A1) wavelengths are calculated and variation of the absorption ratio (A2/A1) due to change of analyte refractive index would be introduced as the sensitivity of sensor (S = Δ(A2/A1)/Δn). Obtained results show that the increase of analyte refractive index from n = 1.312 to n = 1.384 will result in an increase of sensor’s sensitivity from 9.3/RIU to 33.475/RIU.
