Larrea tridentata (creosote bush) seedlings were subjected tothree regimens of atmospheric humidity in a growth chamber experiment.Relative humidity was varied to achieve daytime vapour pressuredeficits (VPD) during growth of 29, 48 and 77 kPa. Photosyntheticgas exchange, carbon isotope composition and biomass productionwere measured after 8–10 weeks of treatment. Whereas stomatalconductance (g) declined linearly with increasing ambient VPD,CO2 assimilation rate (A) was not measurably affected by changesin ambient VPD. This resulted in a decrease in intrinsic wateruse efficiency (ratio of CO2 assimilation to stomatal conductance;A/g) with increasing VPD. Leaf carbon isotope discrimination(A) was negatively correlated (r2 = 088) with A/g ratios. Carbonisotope discrimination also correlated positively with ratiosof internal (C1) to ambient (ca) CO2 levels determined by gasexchange measurements (c1/c). The ratio of c1 to ca was lowerat higher VPD levels. Leaf biomass decreased with increasingambient VPD and correlated positively with. Root to leaf biomassratio increased at higher VPD levels and correlated negativelywith. The respective effects of meristem temperature, vapour pressuredeficit (VPD) and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD)on leaf elongation rate (LER) of maize, in the absence of waterdeficit in the soil have been quantified. This analysis wascarried out in a series of field experiments in northern andsouthern France over several seasons and years, and in growthchamber experiments. LER was measured with 10 min steps, togetherwith meristem temperature, VPD and PPFD at leaf level in threetypes of experiments: in growth chamber experiments with stepsin PPFD or VPD at constant meristem temperature, in growth chamberexperiments with several combinations of constant, but contrasting,PPFDs, VPDs and meristem temperatures, and in the field withfluctuating conditions, (i) When evaporative demand was low(night or day with low air VPD), LER was only linked to meristemtemperature, regardless of other climatic conditions, (ii) Lighthad no effect per se on LER in the range from 0 to 1500 molm–2 s–1 for time-scales longer than 2 h, providedthat its indirect effects on meristem temperature and on evaporativedemand were corrected (in the growth chamber) or taken intoaccount (in the field), and provided that cumulated PPFD overa weekly time-scale was compatible with field conditions, (iii)Evaporative demand sensed by growing leaves, as estimated bymeristem-to-air vapour pressure difference, markedly affectedLER in the range from 1–4 kPa, at all time-scales understudy, with a unique relationship in the growth chamber (constantconditions) and in the field (fluctuating conditions). Thiseffect was only observed when PPFD was high enough for stomatato open. The negative effect of evaporative demand on LER wasprobably not due to long distance root-to-shoot signalling, since soil was wet, calculated root water potential remainedclose to 0 MPa and concentration of ABA in the xylem sap wasvery low. Therefore, it is proposed to model maize LER witha two-step process, involving the calculation of the maximumLER at a given meristem temperature and then the calculationof the reduction in LER due to evaporative demand. Joint analysisof the whole set of data by using the two equations yieldeda r2 of 0.75. This two-step process would be more accurate thanthe provision of LER from temperature only in cases where airVPD frequently exceeds 2 kPa. Photosynthetic acclimation was examined by exposing third trifoliolateleaves of soybeans to air temperatures of 20 to 30°C andphotosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFD) of 150 to 950µmolphotons m–2 s–1 for the last 3 d before they reachedmaximum area. In some cases the environment of the third leafwas controlled separately from that of the rest of the plant.Photosynthesis, respiration and dry mass accumulation were determinedunder the treatment conditions, and photosynthetic capacity, and dry mass and protein content were determined at full expansion.Photosynthetic capacity, the light-saturated rate of net carbondioxide exchange at 25°C and 34 Pa external partial pressureof carbon dioxide, could be modified between 21 and 35 µmolCO2 m–2 s–1 by environmental changes after leaveshad become exporters of photosynthate. Protein per unit leafmass did not differ between treatments, and photosynthetic capacityincreased with leaf mass per unit area. Photosynthetic capacityof third leaves was affected by the PPFD incident on those leaves, but not by the PPFD on other leaves on the plant. Photosyntheticcapacity of third leaves was affected by the temperature ofthe rest of the plant, but not by the temperature of the thirdleaves. Photosynthetic capacity was linearly related to carbondioxide exchange rate in the growth regimes, but not to daytimePPFD. At high PPFD, and at 25 and 30°C, mass accumulationwas about 28% of the mass of photosynthate produced. At lowerPPFD, and at 20°C, larger percentages of the photosynthateproduced accumulated as dry mass. The results suggest that photosynthatesupply is an important factor controlling leaf structural growthand, consequently, photosynthetic acclimation to light and temperature. Net photosynthesis rate (Pn), stomatal conductance to CO2 andresidual conductance to CO2 were measured in the last six leaves(the sixth or flag leaf and the preceding five leaves) of Triticumaestivum L. cv. Kolibri plants grown in Mediterranean conditions.Recently fully expanded leaves of well-watered plants were alwaysused. Measurements were made at saturating photosynthetic photonflux density, and at ambient CO2 and O2 levels. The specificleaf area, total organic nitrogen content, some anatomical characteristics, and other parameters, were measured on the same leaves usedfor gas exchange experiments. A progressive xeromorphic adaptation in the leaf structure wasobserved with increasing leaf insertion levels. Furthermore, mesophyll cell volume per unit leaf area (Vmes/A) decreasedby 52·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. Mesophyllcell area per unit leaf area also decreased, but only by 24·5%.However, nitrogen content per unit mesophyll cell volume increasedby 50·6% from the first leaf to the flag leaf. This increasecould be associated to an observed higher number of chloroplastcross-sections per mm2 of mesophyll cell cross-sectional areain the flag leaf: values of 23000 in the first leaf and 48000in the flag leaf were obtained. Pn per unit leaf area remainedfairly constant at the different insertion levels: values of33·83±0·93 mg dm–2 h–1 and32·32±1·61 mg dm–2 h–1 wereobtained for the first leaf and the flag leaf, respectively.Residual conductance, however, decreased by 18·2% fromthe first leaf to the flag leaf. Stomatal conductance increasedby 41·7%. The steadiness in Pn per unit leaf area across the leaf insertionlevels could be mainly accounted for by an opposing effect betweena decrease in Vmes/A and a more closely packed arrangement ofphotosynthetic apparatus. Adaptative significance of structuralchanges with increasing leaf insertion levels and the steadinessin Pn per unit leaf area was studied. Key words: Photosynthesis, structure, wheat  相似文献

Photosynthesis by developing embryos of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The aim of this study was to assess the photosynthetic potentialof developing seeds of oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) andto compare photosynthetic properties of embryo plastids withthose of leaf chloroplasts from the same species. Measurementsof CO2-dependent O2 evolution show that developing seeds ofB. napus are photosynthetically active in vitro. Essentially, all of the photosynthetic activity of the developing seed isaccounted for by the embryo. The rate of photosynthesis by developingembryos increased until the onset of desiccation, after whichit declined, so that by maturity embryos were no longer photosyntheticallyactive. Photosynthetic activity was positively correlated withchlorophyll content throughout development. Comparison of thephotosynthetic characteristics of leaf and embryo chloroplastsrevealed that rates of uncoupled electron transport were 2.5-foldgreater in those from the embryo. Light-saturated rates of CO2-dependentO2 evolution, per unit chlorophyll, and CO2 saturation pointswere similar for chloroplasts from both tissues. However, light-saturationpoints and chlorophyll a/b ratios were lower for embryo thanfor leaf choroplasts. Embryos and embryo chloroplasts also containedconsiderably less ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenaseprotein per unit total protein, than leaves. Although excisedembryos were capable of high rates of CO2-dependent O2 evolution(90–100 mol mg–1 chlorophyll h–1) under asaturating photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), low transmittanceof light through the silique wall (30%), together with the highPPFD required to achieve light compensation points in developingseeds (500 mol m–2 s–1), suggests that photosynthesisin vivo is unlikely to make a net contribution to carbon economyunder normal environmental conditions. Acclimation of Lolium temulentum to enhanced carbon dioxide concentration   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Acclimation of single plants of Lolium temulentum to changing[CO2] was studied on plants grown in controlled environmentsat 20°C with an 8 h photoperiod. In the first experimentplants were grown at 135 µ;mol m–2 s–1 photosyntheticphoton flux density (PPFD) at 415µl l–1 or 550µll–1 [CO2] with some plants transferred from the lowerto the higher [CO2] at emergence of leaf 4. In the second experimentplants were grown at 135 and 500 µmol m–2 s–1PPFD at 345 and 575 µl l–1 [CO2]. High [CO2] during growth had little effect on stomatal density, total soluble proteins, chlorophyll a content, amount of Rubiscoor cytochrome f. However, increasing [CO2] during measurementincreased photosynthetic rates, particularly in high light.Plants grown in the higher [CO2] had greater leaf extension, leaf and plant growth rates in low but not in high light. Theresults are discussed in relation to the limitation of growthby sink capacity and the modifications in the plant which allowthe storage of extra assimilates at high [CO2]. Limitation of photosynthesis and light activation of ribulose,1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCO) were examined in the 5thleaf of seedlings of red clover (Trifolium pratense L. cv. Renova)for 5 d following an increase in photosynthetic photon fluxdensity (PPFD) from 200 to 550µmol quanta m–2 s–1.Net photosynthesis and its stimulation at 2.0 kPa O2 initialactivity of rapidly extracted RuBPCO, standard activity of RuBPCOafter incubation of the extracts in the presence of CO2, Mg2+,and inorganic phosphate and contents of soluble protein, starch, soluble sugars, and various photosynthetic metabolites weredetermined. Photosynthesis decreased and starch content increased. No decrease in photosynthesis was found if, when PPFD was increased, all leaves except the investigated 5th leaf were removed, suggestingthat the decrease in photosynthesis was due to accumulated carbohydrates. The stimulation of photosynthesis at 2.0 kPa O2 did not decreaseand the ratio of the total foliar steady-state contents of triosephosphate to 3-phosphoglycerate increased suggesting that thedecrease in photosynthesis was not due to limiting inorganicphosphate in chloroplasts. Intercellular CO2 partial pressureand RuBP content were not decreased. Nevertheless, the ratioof photosynthesis to initial RuBPCO activity decreased, suggestingthat the catalysis per active RuBPCO site was decreased. Theincrease in PPFD in the growth cabinet and the PPFD at whichleaves were preconditioned for 1 h, affected not only initialactivity but also the standard activity of RuBPCO. The resultssuggest that a varying proportion of RuBPCO was bound to membranesand was contained in the insoluble fraction of the extracts.A comparison of photosynthesis with extracted RuBPCO activitysuggested that membrane bound RuBPCO did not contribute to photosyntheticCO2 fixation and that the binding and release to and from membranesmodulated actual RuBPCO activity in vivo. Ward, D. A. and Drake, B. G. 1988. Osmotic stress temporarilyreverses the inhibitions of photosynthesis and stomatal conductanceby abscisic acid—evidence that abscisic acid induces alocalized closure of stomata in intact, detached leaves.—J.exp. Bot 39: 147–155. The influence of osmotic stress on whole leaf gas exchange wasmonitored in detached leaves of Glycine max supplied with anexogenous concentration (10–5 mol dm–3) of ±abscisicacid (ABA) sufficient to inhibit net photosynthesis and stomatalconductance by 60% and 70%, respectively, under a saturatingirradiance and normal air. Raising the osmotic (sorbitol) concentrationof the ABA solutions feeding leaves elicited rapid and synchronousreversals of the ABA-dependent inhibitions of net photosynthesisand conductance. These reversals reached a peak simultaneously, after which photosynthesis and conductance declined. The magnitudeof the transient stimulations at peak height was dependent uponthe sorbitol concentration of the ABA feeding solution, althoughthe time-course of the transients (half time, 4–6 min)was similar for the different osmotic concentrations applied.Irrespective of transient size the relative changes of photosynthesisand conductance were comparable; consequently the calculatedpartial pressure of CO2 in the substomatal space (Ci) remainedrelatively constant during the transient phase. In contrastto the ABA-treated leaves, elevating the osmotic concentrationof the distilled water supply feeding control leaves stimulatedconductance to a much greater relative extent than photosynthesis. The co-stimulations of photosynthesis and conductance inducedin ABA-treated leaves by osmotic shock were not due to a restrictionin the transpirational uptake of ABA and occurred irrespectiveof the source osmoticum applied. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that the ABA-dependentinhibition of photosynthesis at constant Ci is an artifact causedby the spatially heterogeneous closure of stomata in responseto ABA. Alternative explanations for the responses are, however, considered. Key words: Abscisic acid, photosynthesis, osmotic stress, Glycine max, stomatal conductance  相似文献

Pereira, J. S., Tenhunen, J. D. and Lange, O. L. 1987. Stomatalcontrol of photosynthesis of Eucalyptus globulus Labill. treesunder field conditions in Portugal.—J. exp. Bot. 38: 1678–1688. Stomatal behaviour of adult leaves of Eucalyptus globulus treeswas studied under field conditions in Portugal. In the absenceof severe plant water stress stomata were open when the summedtotal of photosynthetically active photon flux density incidenton both leaf surfaces was above 100 µmol m2s1 and leafconductance to water vapour reached 245 mmol m 2 s1 on a total(both epidermes) leaf area basis. The stomata of both leaf epidermesresponded similarly to changes in solar radiation and waterstress. Water stress resulted in decreasing daily maxima inleaf conductance as predawn leaf water potential decreased.Maximal leaf conductance decreased to less than 50 mmol m 2s 1 when predawn leaf water potential decreased below —1·0MPa. At similar values of predawn leaf water potential stomatawere more closed as the leaf to air water vapour partial pressuredifference increased. The effect of increasing air dryness onstomata was greatest at high predawn leaf water potential. Dailymaxima in photosynthetic rates and in leaf conductance werelinearly related to one another in spring and summer. Both decreasedwith increase in leaf water stress. In autumn and winter, increasesin leaf conductance occurring under natural conditions duringthe course of the day were not necessarily accompanied by increasesin net photosynthesis. Stomata were more closed in the afternoonthan in the morning at the same rates of net photosynthesis, temperature or leaf to air water vapour partial pressure difference. In three experiments measurements of photosynthesis were madeon single leaves of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) on threecultivars grown in a controlled environment. Plants which had grown under an irradiance of 30 J m–2s–1, or in shade within a simulated mixed sward, producedleaves with photosynthetic capacities some 30 per cent lowerthan did plants grown at 120 J m–2 s–1 without shade. There were no differences between treatments either in photosynthesismeasured at 30 J m–2 s–1, or in respiration ratesper unit leaf dry weight. Respiration per unit leaf area washigher in the plants grown at 120 J m–2 s–1, reflectingthe lower specific leaf area of these leaves. There were nodifferences between the three cultivars examined. Leaves which were removed from the shade of a simulated swardshortly after becoming half expanded achieved photosyntheticcapacities as high as those which were in full light throughouttheir development. It is suggested that it is this characteristicwhich enables clover plants growing in an increasingly densemixed sward to produce a succession of leaves of high photosyntheticcapacity, even though each lamina only reaches the top of thesward at a relatively late stage in its development. Rates of net photosynthesis of the flag leaves of 15 genotypesof wheat and related species were measured throughout theirlife, using intact leaves on plants grown in the field. At thestage when rates were maximal, they were in general highestfor the diploid species, intermediate for the tetraploidspeciesand lowest for Triticum aestivum (means of 38, 32 and 28 mgCO2 dm–2 h–1 respectively). Rates were stronglynegatively correlated with leaf area, leaf width and the meanplan area per mesophyll cell and positvely correlated with stomatalfrequency and number of veins per mm of leaf width. The differencesamong species in these attributes were mainly related to ploidylevel. It was not possible to determine the relative importanceof each anatomical feature, though the changes in stomatal frequencyhad only slight effects on stomatal conductance and the observeddifferences in rates of photosynthesis were much greater thanwould be expected from those in stomatal conductance alone. There was genetic variation in rates of light dependent oxygenevolution of isolated protoplasts and intact chloroplasts butno difference attributable to ploidy. The mean rate, 91 µmolO2 mg–1 chlorophyll h–1, equivalent to 3.9 mg CO2mg-1chlorophyll h-1 was considerably less than the rate of photosynthesisin comparable intact leaves, which was 7.2 mg CO2 mg–1chlorophyll h–1. The total above-ground dry matter yields were least for thewild diploids T. urartu and T. thauodar and the wild tetraploidT. dicoccoides, but the other wild diploids produced as muchdry matter as the hexaploids. The prospects of exploiting differences in photosynthetic ratein the breeding of higher yielding varieties are discussed. The effects of night-time temperature, leaf-to-air vapour pressuredeficit (VPD) and water stress on CO2 recycling in Bromeliahumilis Jacq. grown under two light and nitrogen regimes wereinvestigated. At night-time temperatures above 30°C, integratednet dark CO2 uptake was severely reduced and CO2 for malatesynthesis was mainly derived from dark respiration. At 35°C,up to 84% of the CO2 liberated by dark respiration was refixedinto malic acid. Below 30 °C only nitrogen deficient plantsshowed significant recycling. No significant differences wereobserved between high and low light grown plants in CO2 recycling.A doubling of leaf-to-air VPD from 7-46 Pa kPa–1 to 15.49Pa kPa–1 resulted in a 2- to 20-fold decrease in leafconductance and about 50 to 65% reduction in integrated darkCO2 uptake. However, about twice as much CO2 was recycled atthe higher VPD as in the lower. Ten days of water stress resultedin 80 to 100% recycling of respiratory CO2. Under high VPD andwater stress treatments, the amount of water potentially savedthrough recycling of CO2 reached 2- to 6-fold of the actualtranspiration. In general, nitrogen deficient plants had higherper cent recycling of respiratory CO2 in response to high night-timetemperature, increased VPD or water stress. The results emphasizethe ecological relevance of carbon recycling in CAM plants. Key words: Bromelia humilis, CAM, PPFD, dark respiration, temperature, VPD, water stress  相似文献

Gas exchange measurements were undertaken on 2-year-old plantsof Clusia rosea. The plants were shown to have the ability toswitch from C3-photosynthesis to CAM and vice versa regardlessof leaf age and, under some conditions, CO2 was taken up continuously, throughout the day and night. The light response was saturatedby 120 µmol m–2 s–1 typical of a shade plant. Gas exchange patterns in response to light, water and VPD wereexamined. All combinations of daytime and night-time CO2 uptakewere observed, with rates of CO2 uptake ranging from 2 to 11µmol m–2 s–1 depending upon water status andlight. Categorization of this plant asC3, CAM or an intermediateis impossible. Differing VPD affected the magnitude of changesfrom CAM to C3-photosynthesis (0 to 0.5 and 0 to 6.0 µmolm–2 s–1 CO2, respectively) when plants were watered.Under well-watered conditions, but not under water stress, highPPFD elicited changes from CAM to C3 gas exchange. This is unusualnot only for a shade plant but also for a plant with CAM. Itis of ecological importance for C. rosea, which may spend theearly years of its life as an epiphyte or in the forest understorey,to be able to maximize photosynthesis with minimal water loss. The dependence of photosynthetic capacity on imported and locally-assimilatedsupplies of carbon during leaf development under different irradianceswas investigated in Glycine max. The potential export of carbonto the developing, mainstem trifoliate leaf (source-potential)was restricted non-destructively by shading all lower, sourceleaves (source-shading), while local photosynthesis was modifiedconcurrently by exposing the young leaf to different light levelsduring development. When source-shading was applied below the2nd mainstem trifoliate leaf at the bud stage of development, photosynthetic capacity was unaffected in leaves which had developedunder moderate and low irradiances (500 and 250 µmol PARm –2 s–1 respectively), but was reduced significantlyin leaves developed under a high irradiance (900 µmolPAR m –2 s–1). If source-shading was applied beneaththe 2nd leaf at unfolding, the reduction of photosynthetic capacityunder the high irradiance was relatively minor. The photosyntheticcapacity attained by the 2nd leaf during development under differentirradiances was influenced by the previous light environmentof the whole plant. In contrast to the 2nd leaf, the photosyntheticcapacities of the 1st and 4th mainstem leaves were relativelyunaffected by source-shading, even under the highest light regime. While photosynthetic capacity showed a widespread insensitivityto the light level of the lower region of the canopy, source-shadingreduced final leaf size irrespective of node position or localirradiance during leaf development. These effects were not relatedto differences in daily photosynthesis by the expanding leaf, and are discussed in terms of the source/sink balance of thedeveloping leaf. The stomatal response of seedlings grown in 360 or 720 µmolmol–1 to irradiance and leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficit(VPD) at both 360 and 720 µmol mol–1 to CO2 wasmeasured to determine how environmental factors interact withCO2 enrichment to affect stomatal conductance. Seedlings offour species with different conductances and life histories,Cercis canadensis (L.), Quercus rubra (L.), Populus deltoides(Bartr. ex Marsh.) P. nigra (L.), and Pinus taeda (L.), weremeasured in hopes of identifying general responses. Conductanceof seedlings grown at 360 and 720 µmol mol–1 CO2were similar and responded in the same manner to measurementCO2 concentration, irradiance and VPD. Conductance was lowerfor all species when measured at 720 than when measured at 360µmol mol–1 CO2 at both VPDs ({small tilde}1.5 and{small tilde}2.5 kPa) and all measured irradiances greater thanzero (100, 300, 600,>1600 µmol m–2 S–2)The average decrease in conductance due to measurement in elevatedCO2 concentration was 32% for Cercis, 29% for Quercus, 26% forPopulus, and 11% for Pinus. For alt species, the absolute decreasein conductance due to measurement in CO2 enrichment decreasedas irradiance decreased or VPD increased. The proportional decreasedue to measurement in CO2 enrichment decreased in three of eightcases: from 0.46 to 0.10 in Populus and from 0.18 to 0.07 inPinus as irradiance decreased from>1600 to 100 µmolm–2 s–1 and from 0.35 to 0.24 in Cercis as VPD increasedfrom 1.3 to 2.6 kPa. The Effect of Temperature on the Photosynthesis of Ryegrass Canopies   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In bright light, the rate of gross photosynthesis of ryegrasscanopies increased with increasing temperature between 10 and25 °C, in keeping with an increase in the photosynthesisof their constituent leaves. The increase in canopy gross photosynthesisoccurred irrespective of the leaf area index, which would affectthe proportion of the leaves in bright light. Because the responseof gross photosynthesis to temperature was similar to that ofrespiration, net photosynthesis also increased with temperature, irrespective of the relative magnitude of the two processes. However, these increases in photosynthesis were observed whilethe saturation deficit of water vapour was kept small (lessthan 3 g m–3). The photosynthesis of both leaves and canopieswas reduced when measured at a greater saturation deficit; indicatingthat the increasing saturation deficit, which frequently accompaniesincreasing temperature in the field, may obscure the effectof temperature on photosynthesis. Lack of control of saturationdeficit as measurement temperature is increased may explainwhy some workers have failed to detect a positive effect oftemperature on photosynthesis. Acclimation of fully developed leaves of Bischofia javanicaBlume to shadelight was examined. Seedlings were grown undersimulated daylight (1000 µmol m–2 s–1), thentransferred to a simulated shadelight (40 µmol m–2s–1). When a high-light leaf was transferred to low light, large negativenet photosynthetic rates (Pm) were recorded. This decrease wasrapid, but within 7 d the rate increased and became equal tothe low-light control leaf. These changes in photosynthesisdid not follow the pattern of changes in stomatal conductance(gs). Transfer to the low light resulted in a dramatic decreasein leaf weight per unit area (Lw), and most of the decreasesin Lw occurred within 3 d of transfer when the Pm of the transferredleaf was well below that of the low-light control leaf. There was a significant decrease in chlorophyll a in the transferredleaf without an appreciable change in chlorophyll b resultingin a large decrease in the chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b ratio.Leaf chlorophylls per unit area were higher in the transferredleaf than the low-light control leaf. Maximum photosyntheticrate in the transferred leaf was decreased by 40% compared tothat for the high-control leaf, but was almost at the same extenthigher than the low-light control leaf The results are discussedin the context of carbon gain capacity of its seedlings underlight-limiting forest understorey habitats. Photosynthetic development of Spinacia oleracea L. (spinach)cells was ‘triggered’ by halving the supply of sugarto a continuous culture. This was demonstrated between two steadystates at constant specific growth rate (4.2 ± 0.17 x10–3 h–1). As a direct consequence of this ‘trigger’the cells were in conditions of sugar famine, demonstrated byorganic carbon balance. Comparison of the biomass was made betweenthe two steady states. It was found that in sugar famine thebiomass contained 8 times as much chlorophyll and the ratioof photosynthesis to respiration in saturating conditions hadincreased 22 times, when compared to the biomass in conditionof sugar excess. All substrate carbon and organic factors were then removed fromthe fresh medium, carbon dioxide and photosynthetically activeradiation (PAR) were increased. In these photoautotrophic conditionsthree further steady states were established. The effects ofincreasing the dilution rate and then increasing PAR were examined.Growth was found to be limited by PAR. The photosynthetic yield Y of photoheterotrophic spinach cellsin fructose famine was estimated as 0.004 g kJ–1 PAR.In photoautotrophic conditions the maximum Y was 0.0018 g kJ–1.It was suggested that this lower yield was due to chloroplastdevelopment being arrested by an unknown factor.  相似文献

The rates of gross photosynthesis of the flag leaf and the nextleaf below (second leaf) in crops of winter wheat were estimatedfrom the 14C uptake of the leaves after exposure to short pulsesof 14CO2. The photosynthetic rates of both leaves during thegrain-filling period decreased with increase in nitrogen fertilizerbecause the intensity of photosynthetically active radiationwas less at the surface of the leaves in the dense crops withadditional nitrogen. In addition, the rate of photosynthesisat saturating light intensity was slightly decreased by nitrogen. The effects of nitrogen, in decreasing the rate of photosynthesisper unit area of leaf and in increasing the leaf-area indexof the top two leaves, were such that the photosynthetic productivityper unit area of land of the flag leaf was increased by nitrogenbut the productivity of the second leaf was unaffected. Applying180 kg N ha–1 increased the productivity of the top twoleaves by a factor of 2.3 but increased grain yield by only1.8. The photosynthetic productivity of the second leaf duringthe grain-filling period was about half that of the flag leaf. There was no difference in photosynthetic rate per unit areaof leaves of Cappelle-Desprez and Maris Huntsman which couldaccount for the larger yield of the latter cultivar. There wasa slight indication that the leaves of the semi-dwarf cultivarsMaris Fundin and Hobbit photosynthesized faster than those ofMaris Huntsman. The combined effects of partial defoliation and nutrient availabilityon net photosynthesis and related biochemical variables werestudied in cloned Betula pendula Roth saplings. The saplingswere randomly assigned to different nutrient levels (5, 1·5and 0·5 mol N m–3) in aerated nutrient cultureand to the following defoliation treatments: (1) control (nodamage), (2) damage of the developing main stem leaves (halfof the leaf lamina removed), and (3)removal of the developingmain stem leaves (entire leaf lamina removed). The leaf immediatelybelow the damaged area in the treated plants, and the correspondingleaf in the control plants, were selected for study. Net photosynthesismeasurements and biochemical determinations were made 2, 8 and14 d after assigning the treatments. At intermediate and lownutrient levels the final net photosynthetic capacity was significantlyhigher in the saplings with the topmost leaves removed thanin the undamaged control saplings, indicating that the expressionof compensatory photosynthesis after partial defoliation isnot inhibited by nutrient deficiency. The photosynthetic enhancementwas closely associated with the increased initial activity ofribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco). However, the increased activity of Rubisco was not exclusively the resultof a higher amount of Rubisco. The expression of compensatoryphotosynthesis after partial defoliation in our study cannotunequivocally be attributed to an increased flow of nitrogento the remaining leaves.
