Background and Aims

The aim was to assess the amounts of macro- (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and micro-elements (Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn) lost by peach trees (Prunus persica L. Batsch) in all the nutrient removal events (pruning, flower abscission, fruit thinning, fruit harvest and leaf fall), as well as those stored in the permanent structures of the tree (roots, trunk and main branches).

Methods

Three peach cultivars were used. The biomass and nutrient composition of materials lost by trees at the different events were measured during 3 years. The biomass and nutrient composition of permanent tree structures were also measured after full tree excavation.

Results

Winter pruning and leaf fall were the events where most nutrients were removed. Nutrient losses and total requirements are given as amounts of nutrients needed per tree and also as amounts necessary to produce a t of fresh fruit.

Conclusions

The allocation of all nutrients analyzed in the different plant parts was similar in different types of peach trees, with each element having a typical “fingerprint” allocation pattern. Peach tree materials removed at tree pruning and leaf fall include substantial amounts of nutrients that could be recycled to improve soil fertility and tree nutrition. Poorly known tree materials such as flowers and fruit stones contain measurable amounts of nutrients.  相似文献

Background and aims

The possible influence of phosphorus (P) on iron (Fe) deficiency chlorosis in susceptible plants needs elucidation. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that Fe chlorosis can be aggravated at high levels of P in the substrate.

Methods

Chickpea, lupin and peanut (in a preliminary experiment), and lupin and sorghum (in a second, factorial experiment) were successively grown on artificial substrates consisting of mixtures of Fe oxide-coated sand (FOCS), calcium carbonate (calcite) sand (CCS) and quartz sand to which phosphate was added at different doses.

Results

The proportion of FOCS in the substrate had a significant positive effect on leaf chlorophyll concentration (as estimated via SPAD) in all crops. In the factorial experiment, the SPAD value was negatively affected by the proportion of CCS in the dicot (lupin) but not in the monocot (sorghum). In the preliminary experiment, increasing the P dose generally had little effect on the SPAD of plants grown on the FOCS-rich substrate but a negative effect on those grown on the FOCS-poor substrate. In the factorial experiment, the P dose negatively affected SPAD in both lupin and sorghum.

Conclusions

Iron acquisition by the plant is negatively influenced by P probably because the solubility of the Fe oxides decreases with increasing coverage of their surfaces by sorbed phosphate.  相似文献

Background and aims

Iron (Fe) deficiency chlorosis associated with high levels of soil bicarbonate is one of the main nutritional disorders observed in sensitive grapevine genotypes. The aim of the experiment was to assess both the independent and combined effects of Fe and bicarbonate nutrition in grapevine.

Methods

Plants of the Fe chlorosis tolerant 140 Ruggeri rootstock were grown with and without Fe(III)-EDTA and bicarbonate in the nutrient solution. SPAD index, plant growth, root enzyme (PEPC, MDH, CS, NADP+ ?IDH) activities, kinetic properties of root PEPC, organic acid concentrations in roots and xylem sap and xylem sap pH were determined. A factorial statistical design with two factors (Fe and BIC) and two levels of each factor was adopted: +Fe and ?Fe, and +BIC and ?BIC.

Results

This rootstock strongly reacted to Fe deficiency by activating several response mechanisms at different physiological levels. The presence of bicarbonate in the nutrient solution changed the activity of PEPC and TCA related enzymes (CS, NADP+-IDH) and the accumulation/translocation of organic acids in roots of Fe-deprived plants. Moreover, this genotype increased root biomass and root malic acid concentration in response to high bicarbonate levels in the substrate. Bicarbonate also enhanced leaf chlorophyll content.

Conclusions

Along with a clear independent effect on Fe nutrition, our data support a modulating role of bicarbonate on Fe deficiency response mechanisms at root level.  相似文献

Background and aims

Iron deficiency chlorosis (IDC) leads to severe leaf chlorosis, low photosynthetic rates, and yield reductions of several million metric tonnes each year. In order to devise breeding and genetic transformation programs that aim at generating high-yielding and IDC-tolerant soybean lines, it is necessary to better understand the mechanisms that enable tolerant plants to survive under Fe-limiting conditions.

Methods

An in silico analysis in the USDA soybean collection allowed the identification of a set of novel efficient and inefficient soybean cultivars which can be used in future studies concerning IDC response. Plants were grown in iron deficient and iron sufficient conditions using a bicarbonate system and several IDC-related aspects were studied.

Results

A new set of efficient and inefficient soybean lines were identified in silico, and their tolerance to IDC was confirmed under laboratorial conditions. New plant traits that are highly correlated to IDC scoring were identified: a negative correlation was found between SPAD values and stem weight, weight of the unifoliolates and iron concentration of the first unifoliolates was found; higher SPAD values were correlated with the amount of iron in the first trifoliate leaves. Our data also show that having higher concentrations of iron in the seeds provides increased resistance to IDC. No correlation was found between root iron reductase activity and chlorosis.

Conclusions

Soybean differential chlorosis susceptibility between different accessions is linked to specific morpho-physiological parameters such as unifoliolate leaf size, stem weigh, concentration of iron in the seeds, and tissue iron partitioning.  相似文献

The effects of iron deficiency on the leaf chlorophyll concentrations and on the macro- (N, P, K, Ca and Mg) and micro-nutrient (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) composition of flowers (at full bloom) and leaves (60 and 120 days after full bloom) of field-grown peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch) trees were investigated. Flowers and leaves were taken and analysed from fifty individual trees. Our data indicate that large decreases in leaf chlorophyll concentration were found at the beginning of the season in control trees, possibly associated to a dilution effect by leaf growth, that were later followed by leaf chlorophyll concentration increases. Leaf Fe chlorosis apparently results from two different processes, the dilution of leaf Chl caused by growth and the subsequent inability to produce and/or stabilize new Chl molecules in the thylakoid membrane. Iron chlorosis did not change the seasonal change patterns of any of the nutrients studied. In Fe-deficient trees the K concentration and the K/Ca ratio were high not only in leaves but also in flowers, indicating that this is a characteristic of Fe-deficient plant tissue in the whole fruit tree growing season. Flower Fe concentrations were well correlated with the degree of chlorosis developed later in the season by the trees, suggesting that flower analysis could be used for the prognosis of Fe deficiency in peach.  相似文献

The effects of different levels of Fe-deficiency chlorosis on the fruit yield, appearance and composition of pear and peach trees grown in field orchards have been studied. The major effect of Fe deficiency in both species was a large yield reduction, even when chlorosis was moderate, associated to decreases in fruit tree load. Fruit size increased with moderate chlorosis in both species and decreased with severe chlorosis in peach. In peach, moderate or severe chlorosis affected uniformly all branches, leading to firmer fruits with higher acidity, total phenolics and carboxylates. This indicates a delayed maturity that can be attributed to a low C-availability for fruits. In Fe-deficient pear trees, the majority of fruits (98%) were on non-chlorotic or moderately chlorotic branches, and fruits were less green and firm with an increased sugars/acids ratio. This indicates an advanced fruit maturity that can be attributed to an increased C-availability for fruits. All chlorosis levels increased within-tree variation in fruit appearance.  相似文献

Aims

Iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient, and plant available Fe is often limited in alkaline soils. Fe deficiency chlorosis decreases plant growth and yield. Identification of germplasm with high and low Fe use efficiency will allow studies to better understand the genetic components for breeding Fe efficient varieties.

Methods

A screen using cucumber (Cucumis sativus) seedlings identified varieties that maintained contrasting levels of chlorophyll under Fe deficiency or limitation. A time course of mineral dynamics in cotyledons was conducted.

Results

The variety Ashley had the highest chlorophyll under Fe deficiency and per unit Fe in the leaf, while the variety Miniature White had the lowest. Ashley also maintained higher chlorophyll when challenged with low Fe or bicarbonate, accumulated greater quantities of Fe, and had higher root ferric reductase activity. Cotyledons accumulated minerals for the first several days, then Fe, P, K, and Cu were remobilized. The Fe use efficient and inefficient varieties remobilized Fe and P on different timescales.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that this screen can identify varieties for systems level studies that could elucidate factors needed for Fe use efficiency and remobilization of minerals. The time course indicated that cotyledon Fe stores did not contribute to seedling Fe use efficiency.  相似文献

Tall birch trees allocate extra resource due to aboveground temperature elevation to bud and male flower production rather than to plant growth. Saplings increased only plant growth under warming. Size-dependent response should be considered.

Abstract

We experimentally heated canopy organs of tall birch trees (Betula ermanii Cham.; 18–20 m high) growing at a high latitude to determine how leaf phenology, plant growth, and bud and male flower production might shift in response to increases in aboveground temperature during global climate change. We warmed the canopies with infrared heat lamps fixed to steel pipe scaffolds built around the trees. The temperature of the warmed canopies increased by approximately 1 °C. Warming extended the length of the growing season of canopy leaves (by accelerating leaf flush and delaying leaf fall), and significantly increased the numbers of buds and male flowers per shoot. Bud production and shoot length were positively correlated in both warmed and control branches. However, warming did not increase canopy shoot lengths. The intercept value of the positive regression slope between bud production and shoot length for warmed branches was higher than that for control branches. Thus, canopy warming had a direct positive effect on the bud production but had no indirect effect via increases in shoot length. Our experiment showed that tall birch trees allocated extra resources made available by increased aboveground temperature to bud and male flower production rather than to plant growth.

Background and Aims

The distribution and differentiation times of flowers in monoecious wind-pollinated plants are fundamental for the understanding of their mating patterns and evolution. Two closely related South American Nothofagus species were compared with regard to the differentiation times and positions of staminate and pistillate flowers along their parent growth units (GUs) by quantitative means.

Methods

Two samples of GUs that had extended in the 2004–2005 growing season were taken in 2005 and 2006 from trees in the Lanín National Park, Patagonia, Argentina. For the first sample, axillary buds of the parent GUs were dissected and the leaf, bud and flower primordia of these buds were identified. The second sample included all branches derived from the parent GUs in the 2005–2006 growing season.

Key Results

Both species developed flowering GUs with staminate and/or pistillate flowers; GUs with both flower types were the most common. The position of staminate flowers along GUs was similar between species and close to the proximal end of the GUs. Pistillate flowers were developed more distally along the GUs in N. alpina than in N. obliqua. In N. alpina, the nodes bearing staminate and pistillate flowers were separated by one to several nodes with axillary buds, something not observed in N. obliqua. Markovian models supported this between-species difference. Flowering GUs, including all of their leaves and flowers were entirely preformed in the winter buds.

Conclusions

Staminate and pistillate flowers of N. alpina and N. obliqua are differentiated at precise locations on GUs in the growing season preceding that of their antheses. The differences between N. alpina and N. obliqua (and other South American Nothofagus species) regarding flower distribution might relate to the time of anthesis of each flower type and, in turn, to the probabilities of self-pollination at the GU level.Key words: Branch, bud, growth unit, Markovian models, Nothofagus alpina, N. obliqua, Patagonian forests, pistillate flower, preformation, staminate flower  相似文献

Key Message

Secondary chemistry of P. abies peaks early in shoot development. Condensed tannins accumulate already in late buds while piperidine alkaloid biosynthesis take place in early stage shoots.

Abstract

Plants protect new vegetative parts with defensive secondary metabolite compounds. We investigated how concentrations of piperidine alkaloids and condensed tannins change during bud burst and shoot growth in adult Picea abies. We detected 12 individual piperidine compounds, of which epipinidinone and 1,2-dehydropinidinone and two tentatively identified 1,6-imines are reported for the first time in P. abies. In addition three piperidine alkaloid compounds remain partly identified. We found that concentrations of both total piperidine alkaloids and condensed tannins were highest immediately after bud burst. While concentrations of condensed tannins started to increase during bud opening, the dilution effect decreased concentrations in the developing needles of mature branches. By contrast, the decrease of total alkaloid concentrations in mature shoots was not due to the dilution effect, but was connected to the disappearance of precursor components of biosynthesis. The concentrations of major alkaloid components remain stable from dormant buds to mature needles and twigs, underlining their importance for P. abies, although their real ecological significance is yet to be solved. Based on the structural features and timing of appearance of individual compounds, we also propose a hypothetical biosynthesis route for trans-substituted coniferous piperidine alkaloids.  相似文献

Background

Iron (Fe) deficiency symptoms in maize (Zea mays subsp. mays) express as leaf chlorosis, growth retardation, as well as yield reduction and are typically observed when plants grow in calcareous soils at alkaline pH. To improve our understanding of genotypical variability in the tolerance to Fe deficiency-induced chlorosis, the objectives of this study were to (i) determine the natural genetic variation of traits related to Fe homeostasis in the maize intermated B73 × Mo17 (IBM) population, (ii) to identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for these traits, and (iii) to analyze expression levels of genes known to be involved in Fe homeostasis as well as of candidate genes obtained from the QTL analysis.

Results

In hydroponically-grown maize, a total of 47 and 39 QTLs were detected for the traits recorded under limited and adequate supply of Fe, respectively.

Conclusions

From the QTL results, we were able to identify new putative candidate genes involved in Fe homeostasis under a deficient or adequate Fe nutritional status, like Ferredoxin class gene, putative ferredoxin PETF, metal tolerance protein MTP4, and MTP8. Furthermore, our expression analysis of candidate genes suggested the importance of trans-acting regulation for 2’-deoxymugineic acid synthase 1 (DMAS1), nicotianamine synthase (NAS3, NAS1), formate dehydrogenase 1 (FDH1), methylthioribose-1-phosphate isomerase (IDI2), aspartate/tyrosine/aromatic aminotransferase (IDI4), and methylthioribose kinase (MTK).  相似文献

Floral buds ofBrowallia demissa, at three stages of development, were cultured on Nitsch and Nitsch basal medium. The supplements used include IAA; several cytokinins— benzyladenine, kinetin and 6-benzyl-9 tetrahydropyran-adenine (SD 8339); gibberellic acid (GA3); 2, 3, 5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA); arginine and cysteine. All three stages of floral buds failed to complete development. In some treatments stages II and III produced callus and/or roots from the morphological basal end. Cytokinins promoted bud formation whereas both IAA and GA3 depressed bud formation The shoots differentiatedin vitro were capable of setting flowers, fruits and seeds in all the treatments. The seeds were viable. Comparative studies of development of flowersin vivo andin vitro were made. In some treatments the flowers exhibited abnormal corolla, and roecium and gynoecium. Factors affecting normal bud initiation, organization and development are discussed.  相似文献

Cork oak has buds protected by the full thickness of its substantial phellem, thus explaining why it is the only European tree that can epicormically resprout after higher intensity fire.

Abstract

Epicormic resprouting has various ecological advantages over basal resprouting. However, after higher intensity fires epicormic resprouting is rare as it is difficult for trees and shrubs to keep both their buds and vascular cambia alive. Quercus suber (cork oak) is the only European tree that can resprout epicormically after higher intensity fires. Q. suber develops very thick bark and it has been assumed, without anatomical evidence, that the bark protects the epicormic buds. We investigated if developmental anatomy could explain why Q. suber is an excellent post-fire epicormic resprouter. We examined buds from mature Q. suber trees, macroscopically using a stereo microscope and microscopically using semi-thin microtome sections. Q. suber produced buds in the foliage leaf axils and the bud scale axils. With the commencement of extensive phellem (cork) production the base of the epicormic buds remained at, or just below, the level of the phellogen and thus cork began to bury the buds, although a narrow tube connected each bud to the bark surface. Q. suber epicormic buds became deeply buried in the phellem and would be protected from heat by the full phellem thickness. With its rapid and substantial development of phellem Q. suber had well-protected epicormic buds even in relatively small diameter stems. These results provide the anatomical evidence to show why Q. suber is a noted epicormic resprouter after crown fire.

Axillary bud activation and outgrowth were dependent on local cytokinin, and that bud activation preceded the activation of cell cycle and cell growth genes in apple branching.

Abstract

Cytokinin is often applied to apple trees to produce more shoot branches in apple seedlings. The molecular response of apple to the application of cytokinin, and the relationship between bud activation and cell cycle in apple branching, however, are poorly understood. In this study, RNA sequencing was used to characterize differential expression genes in axillary buds of 1-year grafted “Fuji” apple at 4 and 96 h after cytokinin application. And comparative gene expression analyses were performed in buds of decapitated shoots and buds of the treatment of biosynthetic inhibitor of cytokinin (Lovastatin) on decapitated shoots. Results indicated that decapitation and cytokinin increased ZR content in buds and internodes at 4–8 h, and induced bud elongation at 96 h after treatment, relative to buds in shoots receiving the Lovastatin treatment. RNA-seq analysis indicated that differential expression genes in auxin and cytokinin signal transduction were significantly enriched at 4 h, and DNA replication was enriched at 96 h. Cytokinin-responsive type-A response regulator, auxin polar transport, and axillary meristem-related genes were up-regulated at 4 h in the cytokinin and decapitation treatments, while qRT-PCR analysis showed that cell cycle and cell growth genes were up-regulated after 8 h. Collectively, the data indicated that bud activation and outgrowth might be dependent on local cytokinin synthesis in axillary buds or stems, and that bud activation preceded the activation of cell cycle genes during the outgrowth of ABs in apple shoots.

The effect of iron chlorosis on mineral, thylakoid lipids and fatty acids composition of field grown peach tree leaves was studied. Significant differences were found in iron extracted by using , -dipyridyl (active iron), total iron, P, K, Cu and the P/Fe and Fe/Mn ratios. The levels of total chlorophyll, total glycolipids and phospholipids were reduced under iron chlorosis. A slight iron deficiency does not modify the fatty acid composition of thylakoid membranes, while a strong deficiency changes the proportion of some fatty acids.Abbreviations Chl chlorophyll - DGDG digalactosyldiglycerol - MGDG mono-galactosyldiglycerol - PC phosphatidycholine - PE phophatidylethanolamine - PG phophatidylglycerol - TLC thin layer chromatography - 16:0 palmitic acid - 16:1 palmitoleic acid - 16:lt trans-hexadecenoic - 18:0 steric acid - 18:1 oleic acid - 18:2 linoleic acid - 18:3 linolenic acid  相似文献
