The spawning of the muricid gastropod Plicopurpura pansa in the laboratory at 22-23 degrees C is described. Females deposited 1-20 capsules daily for at least 20 weeks, and produced up to 150 capsules each per spawning season. During spawning, egg clusters were formed consisting of hundreds of capsules of different ages deposited by different females. Each egg capsule contained an average of 436 embryos (+/- s.d. 213.6, range: 95-1092, n=50). Embryos developed without nurse eggs. After six to eight weeks of intracapsular, lecithotrophic development, planktotrophic veligers hatched with two fully developed velar lobes.  相似文献

Summary

The larval development and metamorphosis of a turrid gastropod is described for the first time. This snail, Oenopota levidensis, is typical of the boreal genus Oenopota, which has over 150 described species. Development to a veliger occurs within a lenticular capsule in about 50 days. The capsules hatch to release veligers which swim for less than a week. The remainder of their planktotrophic larval period is spent demersally. Demersal veligers assumed one of two characteristic postures; they remain on the bottom with the velum either extended laterally or folded over the shell. These demersal veligers continue development and metamorphose after another 25 days. The majority of the veligers in the 55 cultures examined metamorphosed and settled within a 96-h period, even though their oviposition occurred over a 47-day period. Potential selective forces leading to this synchronous settlement are proposed.  相似文献

1. Larvae of ‘sábalo’, Prochilodus lineatus, whose adults represent over 60% of overall fish biomass in the Río de la Plata Catchment, have been observed to feed intensively on veligers of the exotic bivalve Limnoperna fortunei. 2. To assess the effects of this dietary shift on the growth of P. lineatus, 28‐day laboratory experiments were carried out feeding newly hatched P. lineatus larvae with three diets: zooplankton artificially enriched with L. fortunei veligers; natural zooplankton; and zooplankton artificially enriched with cladocerans and copepods. The average length, weight and gut contents of the fish larvae were assessed weekly and metabolic rates of fish larvae were measured. 3. Proportions of veligers in gut contents were always higher than those in the experimental diet: 100, 76 and 21% for veliger‐enriched, natural and low‐veliger diets, respectively. Larvae fed a veliger‐enriched diet grew to a significantly larger size than larvae fed the other two diets. In energetic balance comparisons using metabolic rates and prey energy content, all three diets were sufficient to support metabolism and growth. The greatest values of excess energy at the end of each week were in the veliger‐enriched experiments. 4. Feeding on veligers of L. fortunei significantly enhances the growth of P. lineatus larvae and supports the idea that this new and abundant resource is selectively preyed upon by P. lineatus during its larval stage. Higher growth rates may stem from the higher energy contents of veligers compared to crustaceans and/or from the lower energy costs of capturing slower prey.  相似文献

The reproduction of Nassarius festivus (Gastropoda: Nassariidae) has been studied on three contrasting beaches in Hong Kong. There was no significant difference in shell heights between females and males of N. festivus at three study sites and the sex ratio was always female biased. The highest female sex ratio was recorded from Starfish Bay, followed by Tai Tam Bay and then Tai Mong Tsai. The sexual cycle of N. festivus is completed in 1 year in Hong Kong. It is a winter spawner with a reproductive period ranging from September to May. The gonads progressively mature in autumn with maturity being achieved in winter. Spring and summer are times of gonadal decline and gametogenesis initiation, respectively. The ranges in water temperature and salinity at which mature individuals occur were 13.7–28.0°C and 19.3–29.0‰, respectively. N. festivus produces between 16 and 46 eggs·capsule−1. Over its short life span of 1.21 years, therefore, N. festivus attempts to maximize reproductive output. The eggs hatch as veligers which remain in the plankton for between 33 and 41 days. In terms of its reproductive biology, it is concluded that N. festivus behaves as a typical sub-tropical species with a mix of tropical and temperate characteristics seen in other nassariids from these latitudes.  相似文献

The morphology and the deposition periods of egg capsules by the bruised nassa Nassarius vibex were investigated on two beaches located on the southeast coast of Brazil. The nassariids were associated with the charru mussel Mytella charruana, which forms beds on soft mud-bottoms. A total of 1558 capsules were collected, only from the fronds of the green alga Ulva lactuca, 859 for Camaroeiro Beach and 699 for Cidade Beach. The mean sizes of the egg capsules and numbers of eggs or larvae per capsule were similar on the two beaches, as were the periods of capsule deposition. At Camaroeiro Beach, capsules first appeared in May 2006, reached a peak in August 2006, and disappeared in December 2006. At Cidade Beach, the first capsules were recorded in July 2006, with a peak in August 2006. A second peak was also observed at this beach between January 2007 and April 2007. The two periods of deposition recorded at the latter beach may indicate two periods of recruitment in the same year for N. vibex. Regarding the influence of intertidal level on capsule deposition, there was a significant difference in the number of capsules between the levels at Camaroeiro Beach (F?=?7.445, p?<?0.05), and for the second capsule-deposition peak at Cidade Beach (F?=?6.382, p?<?0.05). This study revealed a selective pattern of capsule deposition, with individuals of N. vibex using only fronds of U. lactuca. This process was influenced by the morphodynamics of the two beaches, with the nassariids maximizing the survival of embryos by depositing more capsules and more eggs per capsule in better-protected parts of the mytilid beds.  相似文献

The early larval stages of the deep-sea Nematocarcinidae, Nematocarcinus longirostris Bate, 1888, from the south-western Atlantic Ocean, and N. lanceopes Bate, 1888, from the high Antarctic Weddell Sea, were obtained from plankton catches, described and illustrated. Furthermore, field collected larvae of N. lanceopes were compared with larvae hatched and reared under constant laboratory conditions. The morphology of larvae in both species clearly indicates a planktotrophic and extended mode of larval development. This is an outstanding feature in deep-sea and especially in high-latitudinal caridean shrimp species, and the consequence of such reproductive trait for life history adaptations to both deep-sea and polar environments is discussed.This revised version was published online in November 2004 with corrections to the figure part lettering.  相似文献

Nassariids (Family Nassariidae) are a group of marine snails that are distributed worldwide, with their maximum species diversity in tropical regions, particularly the Indo‐Pacific. However, the traditional taxonomy of Nassariidae defined by shell or radula characters is usually inconsistent with little phylogenetic signal. In the present study, the complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes of nine Nassarius species were sequenced and compared with other eight nassariid species previously reported. All nassariid mt genomes showed the same gene order as in most caenogastropods and shared a very similar pattern with respect to genome size, nucleotide composition and AT contents. A deletion of three nucleotides in nad6 gene was detected in Nassarius jacksonianus and Nassarius acuticostus, and this feature also provided implications for nassariid phylogeny. The genetic distance analysis and reconstructed phylogeny revealed a distant relationship between N. jacksonianus or N. acuticostus and other members in Nassarius. The mitogenomic phylogeny recovered the evolutionary relationships within Nassarius with high statistical support. In addition, a chronogram was reconstructed under an uncorrelated relaxed molecular clock, which dated the divergence among main lineages of Nassarius during ~31 MYA.  相似文献

The reproductive biology of tropical marine cotylean polyclads is presently poorly known. Reproductive aspects of 16 polyclad species from the family Pseudocerotidae in the genera Acanthozoon, Nymphozoon, Phrikoceros, Pseudobiceros, Pseudoceros, Thysanozoon, and Tytthosoceros from Singapore were documented for the first time. Penis fencing was observed to be just a mating ritual and not necessary for insemination, not always aggressive, and could also result in eventual reciprocal insemination. Results showed that all species underwent similar embryonic developmental stages and hatched as Müller's larvae. Only Pseudoceros concinnus and Pseudoceros laingensis, with mean developmental times of >20 days and mean brood sizes of <1,000 eggs, displayed long‐term parental care. Polyclads producing larger brood sizes had shorter developmental times and only covered their egg masses for about one day. Phrikoceros baibaiye and Pseudobiceros spp. produced egg capsules with pointed opercula, whereas all other species possessed smooth, rounded opercula. All genera hatched with brownish‐orange larvae, except for Pseudoceros spp., which hatched with reddish‐purple larvae regardless of the initial embryo color (either grayish‐yellow or reddish‐purple). These could potentially complement current taxonomic characters in distinguishing polyclad genera and species.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The South American charru mussel, Mytella strigata, was recently recorded in Singapore waters, possibly introduced into Southeast Asia through shipping. The mussels have rapidly spread across estuarine coastal mudflats. Adult mussels were collected, spawned in aquaria and larvae were successfully cultured to the juvenile stage in the laboratory. The larval morphology and development of M. strigata is described in this paper. D-shaped veligers were produced within 20 h of fertilization and were approximately 75 µm in shell length. These larvae were capable of settlement two weeks post fertilization. Given an adequate amount of food, they were able to grow up to 1 mm in shell length within 30 days. The larval shell of M. strigata possesses anterodorsal G2 hinge teeth as distinct wavy ledges, with a pitted resilial ridge clearly evident in the juvenile shell.  相似文献

Buccinanops globulosus mated all year round, with higher frequency from May to September, prior to spawning months. Gravid females were found between October and March. Oviposition peaked during rising temperatures and longest daylength while hatching peaked with high water temperature and declining daylength. Gravid females measured between 20 and 41?mm in shell length. The spawn consisted on average of 31 egg capsules, each containing 1266 eggs. Embryos usually completed development within each egg capsule by ingesting small fragments of the uncleaved nurse eggs, which were not a limiting resource. Egg capsules with more than one embryo were not common; in those cases, the embryos had different sizes probably related to intracapsular competition for nutrients, and were on average smaller than solitary embryos in the other capsules. Embryos hatched as crawling juveniles with a mean hatchling shell length of ~3.4?mm. In a few cases, malformed embryos were found, but it was not a common phenomenon. The information recorded in this study, as the minimum reproductive size and spawning season, is valuable for fisheries management.  相似文献

Abstract. The intertidal, sibling species Littorina scutulata and L. plena (Gastropoda, Proso‐branchia) are sympatric throughout most of their ranges along the Pacific coast of North America. Both species release disc‐shaped, planktonic egg capsules from which planktotrophic veliger larvae hatch. Here I review existing data and present new observations on these species' life history, including age at first reproduction, spawning season, maximum fecundity rates, capsule morphology, egg size and number, pre‐hatching development, larval growth at three food concentrations, potential settlement cues, planktonic period, and protoconch size. Previous classification of egg capsule morphologies used to distinguish the species is inaccurate; instead, capsules can be categorized into three types of which each species may produce two. Females of L. scutulata produced capsules with either two rims of unequal diameter or one rim, while females of L. plena produced capsules with one rim or two rims of nearly equal diameter. Females of each species spawned sporadically from early spring to early fall in Puget Sound. Larvae of L. plena hatched one day earlier than those of L. scutulata, and both species grew fastest in the laboratory at intermediate food concentrations. Larvae metamorphosed in the presence of a variety of materials collected from their adult habitat, including conspecific adults, algae, rocks, and barnacle tests. This is the first report of planktotrophic larvae in this genus metamorphosing in the laboratory. The total planktonic period of 8 larvae of L. scutulata raised in the laboratory was 37–70 days, and a single larva of L. plena metamorphosed after 62 days. Protoconch diameter of shells collected from the field was 256–436 μm and did not differ significantly between the species. Previous allozyme and mitochondrial DNA work has suggested high levels of genetic variability in both species and greater genetic population structure in L. plena, despite the long spawning season and long‐lived larvae in both species. The interspecific life history differences described here appear insufficient to produce consistent differences in gene flow patterns.  相似文献

The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Saturnia jonasii (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) was sequenced and compared to those of 19 other bombycoid species. Furthermore, the mitogenome sequences were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among bombycoid species. The 15,261-bp Saturnia jonasii mitogenome contained the typical sets of genes and gene arrangements found in majority of Lepidoptera. All Bombycoidea species, including Saturnia jonasii, have a 15–33-bp spacer sequence at the trnS2-ND1 junction. The phylogenetic reconstruction of bombycoid species consistently and strongly supported monophylies of the families, Saturniidae, Bombycidae, and Sphingidae, based on Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum-likelihood (ML) methods. Among these families, the Bombycidae and Sphingidae species consistently showed a sister relationship, regardless of data partitions; the BI method strongly supported this relationship, whereas it was moderately supported using the ML method.  相似文献

Abstract. Plasticity in hatching can balance risks of benthic and pelagic development and thereby affect the extent of larval dispersal. Veligers of the nudibranch Phestilla sibogae hatched from their individual capsules if the encapsulated embryos were scattered from a torn gelatinous egg ribbon. Hatching occurred as early as day 4 at 23°–25°C. The early hatchlings lacked a propodium, swam, and were not yet competent to settle and metamorphose. Hatching may be induced by predation: crabs consumed egg ribbons, and a portunid crab, caught in the act of tearing an egg ribbon, scattered encapsulated embryos. Undisturbed egg masses hatched as late as 9–11 d at 23°–25°C, or as early as 8 d in a trial at 26°C. Late hatchlings had a well-developed propodium, and 20–100% metamorphosed within a day of exposure to the inducer from the nudibranch's coral prey. A few metamorphosed nudibranchs were found within hatching egg masses. Thus, the veligers can hatch so late that many are competent to metamorphose or so early that the obligate planktonic period can last 4 or more days. An attack by a predator means the benthic habitat is dangerous for the embryos, and swimming is presumably the safer option. In the absence of disturbance, the veligers hatch when ready or nearly ready to settle.  相似文献

Petrobia harti (Ewing) developed more rapidly, deposited more eggs and lived longer onOxalis corniculata than onO. articulata. No development took place on several other recorded host plants. In the field this mite was most abundant during early summer. Males made up less than 10% of the population, and no diapause eggs were seen in the field.Petrobia tunisiae Manson developed on various winter Gramineae, produced about 17 non-diapause eggs during its first generation and mostly diapause eggs in the second. A few diapause eggs kept in the laboratory and dipped in chloroform hatched even after 3 years. A summer diapause is postulated for this species.  相似文献

The veliger larva of Hydrobiu ulvue (Pennant) from the west coast of Wales is described and illustrated from veligers hatched in the laboratory and collected in plankton samples. The larvae are planktotrophic and it is estimated that the pelagic phase is of about four weeks duration. In terms of density they form an important constituent of the plankton of inshore waters. The veliger larva of Littorina littoreu (L.) is also described and illustrated, and it is suggested that some of the conflicting reports on the length of the pelagic phase of H. ulvae result from confusion in indentification of the larvae of these two species.  相似文献

Abstract. Gelatinous egg masses are common in a number of animal phyla. However, they are virtually unknown in marine bivalves, with structures that could be thought of as gelatinous egg masses being reported for only five species. We describe the gelatinous egg mass and intracapsular development in the tropical lucinid Phacoides pectinatus. The embryos developed within individual capsules embedded in a large flimsy, spherical mass. Swimming veligers hatch at 198 μm shell length. They did not feed, settled within several days of hatching, and metamorphosis was completed within 2 weeks of hatching. Gelatinous egg masses might be detected in members of more lucinid species if studies of development included field or in vivo observations of reproduction in addition to producing embryos by stripping the gonads.  相似文献

Convoluta roscoffensis collected from the natural habitat in reproductive condition laid egg capsules for up to 16 weeks under laboratory conditions. However, both the number of capsules laid and number of embryos per capsule decreased with time in culture. When animals were maintained in an alternating light and dark regime, the capsules were laid during the dark period. Animals ceased to deposit egg capsules within five days of incubation in the photosynthetic inhibitor, DCMU. This suggests that metabolism of the algal symbionts of C. roscoffensis contributes to egg production.  相似文献

The spawning and larval development of Tegula euryomphala (Jones, 1844) were studied under laboratory conditions. The release of gametes was stimulated by raising temperature from 16 to 19?°C, and could be induced during several months of the year. Males always spawned first. Eggs were 155.6?μm in diameter and remained unattached to each other. Development was similar to that described for other Trochoidea and lasted 3–5?days at 19?°C. Larvae hatched approximately 24 h post-fertilization at the pre-torsional veliger stage. The larval protoconch of the metamorphic veliger measured 247?μm and was ornamented with six spiral threads and weakly ordered granulation. Summary

Lucinoma aequizonata is a large lucinid clam which lives in reducing mud around 500 m deep. Adults harbor intracellular chemoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria in specialized gill cells called bacteriocytes. The embryonic and early larval development of L. aequizonata is described by using light and scanning electron microscopy. Gametes were obtained by injection of 0.2ml of 4 mM serotonin solution in seawater into the posterior adductor muscle. The oocytes, 200 μm in diameter, are surrounded by a glycoprotein capsule which gives to the egg a total diameter of 500μm. The development which occurs at 10°C is slow. The first polar body is detected 2.5 h after contact between sperm and oocytes (To+2.5 h), and the first cleavage begins 10 h later (To+12.5 h). The following successive cleavages produce a nonciliated morula, then a ciliated gastrula which begins to rotate within the egg-capsule at To+4.5 days. At this stage, the first shell pellicle appears on the dorsal side of the embryo. At T0+8 days, the trochophore larvae develop discrete ciliary bands which constitute the prototroch. Typical straight-hinge veligers, D-shaped larvae, hatch from the egg-capsule 12 days after fertilization. The newly hatched larvae are 240 μm in length and 200μm in height, and the straight hinge 150μm long. To elucidate the symbiont transmission mode, two symbiont-specific primers were designed and used in amplifications by PCR. This primer set was unsuccessful in amplifying symbiont DNA targets from mature gonads, spawned oocytes, eggs, and veligers whereas successful amplifications were obtained from symbiont-containing gill tissues. These data rule out the vertical transmission mode and strongly suggest that the symbionts are environmentally transmitted to the new host generation in L. aequizonata as for all tropical lucinids examined to date.  相似文献
