Brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) is a sentinel fish species which requires clean, cold water habitats. As such, many jurisdictions in the United States where brook charr are present use this species as an indicator of ecosystem health. In Michigan, groundwater-dominated streams are currently being impacted by increased groundwater withdrawal and land use/land cover changes which alter stream temperatures and their flow, and thus have the potential to significantly influence brook charr production and behavior. We quantified the influence of groundwater withdrawal and land use alteration on thermal habitat availability for brook charr using a groundwater modeling tool that estimated changes in baseflow to a stream segment based on changes to the groundwater system due to groundwater withdrawal and changes in rates of recharge related to landscape changes within a watershed. Projected stream temperature changes were calculated using a stream temperature modeling tool and compared to the range of temperature preferenda for brook charr in order to evaluate the potential impact of policy decisions regarding water extraction and land use/cover changes. The models predicted relatively small changes in both stream baseflow and consequently, stream temperature, with increased groundwater withdrawal rates. Land use/land cover alterations which we analyzed were shown to either mitigate or enhance the loss of brook charr thermal habitat as a result of groundwater withdrawal, depending on its relationship to recharge dynamics. This study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between water, land, and fisheries managers to ensure brook charr population viability, productivity, and sustainability in the face of environmental change, increasing water use and development in the watershed.  相似文献

Competitive interactions for foraging microhabitat among introduced brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, and native bull charr, S. confluentus, and westslope cutthroat trout, Oncorhynchus clarki lewisi, were studied by species removal experiments in a tributary of the Flathead Lake and River system, northwestern Montana, focusing on brook charr influences on bull charr. When the three species were in sympatry, they interacted with each other, forming a size-structured, mixed-species dominance hierarchy in two stream pools. The influences of interference interactions were examined by measuring changes in five characteristics of foraging microhabitat and behavior, focal point height and velocity, cover use, and foraging rate and distance, after the successive removal of two species. Cutthroat trout removal resulted in increased foraging rates and distances, and decreased cover use for brook charr, but no changes for bull charr. After removal of brook charr from the two-species system, bull charr also increased foraging rates and distances and occupied more exposed positions. Moreover, total fish densities, which had initially decreased owing to the removal experiments, were partly compensated for by subsequent bull charr immigration, implying that competitive interactions with brook charr are an important factor in the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of bull charr densities, at least on a local scale.  相似文献

Synopsis The influence of late spring and summer water temperatures on brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, growth and age structure was evaluated from 1984 to 1991 in the Ford River, Michigan. Temperature was monitored and brook charr sampled for vital statistics from late May through September using fyke nets and weirs at four locations within a 25.8 km section of stream. Scale analysis was used to determine captured brook charr age, past length at age and relative annual growth rates. Late spring and summer water temperature patterns varied between years with the greatest variability occurring in May and June. Age and size structure also varied between years and was significantly related to temperature. Years with cooler late spring and summer temperature patterns were dominated by older (age 2 and 3), larger brook charr, while years with warmer spring and summer temperature patterns were dominated by younger (age 1), smaller brook charr. Spring and summer temperature did not appear to have a significant effect on the growth of age 0 or age 1 brook charr. However, temperature was negatively related to brook charr growth from age 2 on. As spring and summer water temperatures are critical to brook charr growth and survival, it is important that a streams thermal regime be considered when establishing management goals for this species.  相似文献

The Eurasian and North American beavers aresimilar in their ecological requirements, andrequire water deep enough to cover the entranceto their lodge or burrow. A food cache isoften built next to the lodge or burrow, exceptin some southern areas. On small streams (upto fourth order) dams are frequently built tocreate an impoundment, generally on lowgradient streams, although at high populationdensities dams may be built on steeper gradientstreams. On large rivers or in lakes, simply alodge with its food cache may be built. Thebeaver is a keystone riparian species in thatthe landscape can be considerably altered byits activities and a new ecosystem created. The stream above a dam changes from lotic tolentic conditions. There are hydrological,temperature and chemical changes, depending ontypes of dams and locations. Although theinvertebrates may be fewer per unit area, totalnumber of organisms increases, and diversityincreases as the pond ages. In cool, smallorder streams, the impoundments provide betterhabitat for large trout, possibly creatingangling opportunities. However, at sites wherewater temperatures rise above their optimumpreferenda, salmonids may be replaced by otherspecies, such as cyprinids, catostomids,percids or centrarchids. As the habitat isaltered, interactions amongst co-habiting species may change. For example, brown troutor brook trout (charr) may become dominant overAtlantic salmon. In warm water streams theremay be a shift from faster water dwellers topond dwellers. Larger bodied fish, such ascentrarchids and esocids may displace smallerbodied fish such as cyprinids, providing betterangling. Refugia from high or low water flows,low oxygen or high temperatures, may beprovided in adverse conditions in winter orsummer. However, in some cases dams areobstructions to upstream migration, andsediment may be deposited in former spawningareas. The practicality and benefits ofintroducing or restoring beaver populationswill vary according to location, and should beconsidered in conjunction with a managementplan to control their densities.  相似文献

We examined seasonal changes in population densities of stream salmonids (masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, white-spotted charr Salvelinus leucomaenis, and rainbow trout O. mykiss) in two tributaries of the Shoro River, eastern Hokkaido, Japan. In one small tributary, water temperature was relatively high during the winter, and populations of salmon and trout increased through immigration at this time of the year, becoming dominant components of the salmonid assemblage; the density of charr in this stream decreased during the winter, but charr was dominant during the summer. In another medium-sized tributary, the water temperature fell to close to 0°C during the winter, and densities of salmon and charr decreased in this season, through emigration; trout were very rare in this stream. Seasonal patterns of stream salmonid densities vary among species and between localities, resulting in seasonal changes in species composition. For a comprehensive understanding of population processes, a whole-river survey across seasons will be necessary.  相似文献

Understanding the processes underlying diversification can aid in formulating appropriate conservation management plans that help maintain the evolutionary potential of taxa, particularly under human-induced activities and climate change. Here we assessed the microsatellite genetic diversity and structure of three salmonid species, two native (Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus and brown trout, Salmo trutta) and one introduced (brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis), from an alpine lake in sub-arctic Sweden, Lake Ånn. The genetic diversity of the three species was similar and sufficiently high from a conservation genetics perspective: corrected total heterozygosity, H’T = 0.54, 0.66, 0.60 and allelic richness, AR = 4.93, 5.53 and 5.26 for Arctic charr, brown trout and brook charr, respectively. There were indications of elevated inbreeding coefficients in brown trout (GIS = 0.144) and brook charr (GIS = 0.129) although sibling relationships were likely a confounding factor, as a high proportion of siblings were observed in all species within and among sampling locations. Overall genetic structure differed between species, Fst = 0.01, 0.02 and 0.04 in Arctic charr, brown trout and brook charr respectively, and there was differentiation at only a few specific locations. There was clear evidence of hybridisation between the native Arctic charr and the introduced brook charr, with 6% of individuals being hybrids, all of which were sampled in tributary streams. The ecological and evolutionary consequences of the observed hybridisation are priorities for further research and the conservation of the evolutionary potential of native salmonid species.  相似文献

Spatial and temporal distributions of salmonids were examined in Junction Pond, Northeast River, Placentia and Conne Pond, Conne River, Newfoundland using Lundgren multiple-mesh experimental gillnets. Both ponds contain populations of Atlantic salmon and brook trout with Junction Pond also possessing brown trout and resident Arctic charr. For salmon parr there was a significant month effect in distribution of catch rates in both ponds, and in Junction Pond, there was a significant diel effect. There was also significant variation in catch rates by lentic zone. For brook trout, there was a significant lentic zone × month interaction in Junction Pond; in Conne Pond, the main effects lentic zone and month were significant. Highest benthic catch rates of Atlantic salmon parr occurred in the littoral zone of both ponds. Most captures of brook trout also occurred benthically in both ponds; similar to salmon parr, littoral zone catch rates were higher than those of the deeper benthic area in Conne Pond but the reverse was true for Junction Pond. For both salmon parr and brook trout, the deeper benthic area and the pelagic area were relatively important rearing habitats in each pond. The distribution of catches for brown trout (few in number relative to the other species) in Junction Pond was similar to that of brook trout while Arctic charr were found mainly pelagically. Within the benthic area, most Arctic charr were caught at depths beyond the littoral zone. There was a tendency for Altantic salmon parr and brook trout found in the deeper benthic area and the pelagic area to be significantly larger and older than those in littoral zone in each pond. Although laboratory studies have provided evidence for negative interactions between brook trout and brown trout, it is unknown how these interactions affect larger scale demographics in a natural setting. We tested the effects of invasive brown trout on brook trout demographics by removing brown trout from a sympatric population using a before–after control-impact study design. The study was conducted across a large stream network for a period of 6 years. Abundance of brook trout increased after brown trout removal primarily as a result of increased recruitment and immigration. Size structure also shifted towards larger individuals as a result of increased growth rates and a decrease in emigration of larger trout. Size at maturity and body condition did not change after brown trout removal. Adult brook trout survival increased during the post-treatment period in both the treatment and control reach. A decrease in flood intensity during the post-treatment time period may have led to increased survival. Adult survival may not be the best metric to use when assessing interactions between trout species, especially when the subordinate species has suitable areas to emigrate.  相似文献

The early habitat use of age 0 year brook charr Salvelinus fontinalis in three north temperate lakes which differ in terms of shoreline physical habitat is described. In the two lakes, which contained abundant shoreline woody debris and inundated vegetation, brook charr were observed in extremely close proximity with these habitat features, near shore and near the surface. Fish were absent from open areas away from shore unless in close proximity with fallen floating logs near the surface, extending offshore. In a third lake that had no woody debris or inundated shoreline vegetation, brook charr were observed exclusively in close proximity with the shoreline itself, and near the surface. In all three lakes, fish were most closely associated with the shoreline and with woody debris and inundated vegetation (when present) shortly after emergence, and significantly farther from shore and deeper in the water column thereafter.  相似文献

Synopsis The behaviour and ecology of lake charr Salvelinus namaycush, brook charr S. fontinalis, and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, are reviewed to assess the susceptibility of these species to mortality from exposure to episodic pH depressions and accompanying changes in water quality. Critical life history periods are identified from an examination of: spawning site characteristics, timing of acidic pulses, changes in the sensitivity of developing fish to acidic water, and the ability of these species to detect and avoid deleterious chemical conditions. The three species appeared to be most vulnerable to pH depressions during Snowmelt as: alevins emerging from the redd (brook charr); free embryos in the interstitial spaces of the spawning rubble (lake charr); and embryos during hatching and juveniles during smoltification (Atlantic salmon). Factors that may modify the toxic effects of or the behavioural responses to low pH included: water temperature, acclimation and body energy reserves. The effect of site-specific or episodic mortality of early life history stages on recruitment to the population could not be evaluated due to the lack of information on compensatory mechanisms.  相似文献

Resource polymorphisms are believed to be an important intermediate step in competitive sympatric speciation. Reports of resource polymorphisms in fishes are becoming more common, but tests of the temporal persistence of resource polymorphisms remain scarce. We examined the temporal persistence of a body shape dimorphism reported previously for stream dwelling young-of-the-year brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, inhabiting slow vs. fast running water. In the year of our study, we found no difference in body shape between individuals in slow vs. fast flowing water, although fish in fast flowing water were of greater standard length than those in slower flowing water. We conclude that the resource polymorphism reported earlier for brook charr in streams is not stable temporally.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of zooplankton biomass (as a measure of density), fish biomass, light intensity and water temperature on the attack rate and swimming characteristics (i.e. swimming speed and angle of turn) of juvenile (1+) brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) in field enclosures. We used a portable underwater camera system in a series of pelagic enclosures to quantify the feeding behaviour of brook charr over a gradient of natural conditions. 2. In simple linear or non‐linear regression models we found (i) that attack rate and angle of turn were positively related to water temperature, (ii) that attack rate and swimming speed were positively related to zooplankton biomass and light intensity and (iii) that attack rate was positively related to swimming speed. In multiple regression models, fish biomass, light intensity and variance of the angle of turn accounted for 87% of the variation in attack rate. Light intensity and water temperature accounted for 86% of the variation in swimming speed. Fish gut fullness and attack rate accounted for 83% of the variation in the variance of the angle of turn executed by fish. 3. The increase in the number of attacks as zooplankton biomass increases conforms to the general positive functional response observed in other fish species. Our results also support the hypothesis that swimming speed increases with prey biomass. We did not observe a plateau in attack rate as zooplankton biomass increased. As our experiments were performed under natural biotic and abiotic conditions, factors other than zooplankton biomass might affect or limit this response, such as water temperature and light intensity. 4. Because zooplankton biomass was correlated with water temperature and light intensity, it was not possible to evaluate the independent contribution of these factors on the attack rate and swimming characteristics (swimming speeds and angle of turn) of brook charr. However, this study highlighted the impact of these factors on the feeding behaviour of juvenile brook charr when feeding in the pelagic habitat under natural conditions, and their importance in future models of optimal foraging and fish habitat quality.  相似文献

Synopsis The fish community of a small (2.7 ha) Ontario beaver pond was analyzed relative to predictions based on its small size, shallow depth, brief existence and isolation from more permanent water bodies. The predictions were: (1) species richness will be lower than that of more permanent water bodies in the area, (2) fish will be mainly of small body size, (3) species will be randomly distributed across habitats, and (4) there will be a high degree of diet overlap between species and age classes. The first and second predictions were supported. The pond consisted of 10 resident species in 1985, and at least seven in 1988. Species richness was below the average of 13.2 found in four lakes in the vicinity, but greater than the 3.1 predicted by a species-area curve for non-acidified lakes in Ontario. All species except pumpkinseed, yellow perch and brown bullheads were small-bodied with short life spans and high population turnover rates, and few fish above 100 mm were present. Predictions 3 and 4 were not supported. Habitat occupation was nonrandom, and high diet separation occurred, particularly in August when food limitation was evident. While beaver ponds lack the range of habitats and the diversity of species of lake environments, low prey density and high fish density nevertheless appear to foster resource partitioning.  相似文献

Juvenile brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis) are territorial and have high levels of agonistic behaviour. Juvenile lake charr (S. namaycush) rarely show any indication of territoriality and have very low levels of agonistic behaviour. The inheritance of behaviour in their reciprocal hybrids was investigated by multivariate stepwise discriminant analysis. Lateral display, charge, chase, and forage composed the first canonical axis (87.2% of total dispersion). Pooled hybrid means were closer to that of brook charr, suggesting either directional dominance or modification of the behaviour of hybrids in response to water flow. The mean values of reciprocal hybrids were skewed towards the maternal parent, suggesting a maternal effect in the phenotypic expression of behaviour in these fish.  相似文献

I examine how dispersal of juvenile creek chubs (Semotilusatromaculatus) from beaver ponds into adjacent stream environments interacts with temporal abiotic variability to influence fish foraging, growth, and long-term persistence in the lotic ecosystem. Minnow trapping in upstream and downstream beaver ponds, along with weir traps used to monitor directional movement, indicated that most chubs colonized the stream from the downstream beaver pond. Large annual fluctuations in density of age 0 creek chubs occurred in the stream over a 10-year sampling period. Multiple regression analysis indicated that stream temperature, precipitation, and the density of reproductive creek chubs were not correlated with summer density of age 0 chubs in the stream. The factor most strongly associated with increased density of age 0 creek chubs was creation of the downstream beaver pond during the 6th–7th years of the study, suggesting dispersal from the pond was the primary factor determining age 0 fish density in the stream. Most individuals in the strong year classes neither persisted in the stream through their first winter nor resulted in an increased abundance of older age classes in later years. Comparison of age 0 fish density in summer to the proportion of fish surviving to age 1 in spring suggested that overwinter mortality was density dependent. Furthermore, a comparison of the size structure for age 0 individuals in summer to age 1 individuals the following spring indicated that winter mortality was size dependent. Experiments in an artificial stream adjacent to the natural channel revealed that fish growth was strongly density dependent, decreasing as fish density increased across both spring and summer, and elevated and low discharge. The decline in invertebrate prey captured by the fish and the subsequent decline in fish growth appeared to be particularly pronounced under low discharge in summer. Changes in juvenile creek chub density had no significant effect on benthic insect or crustacean abundance, suggesting that exploitative competition for limited invertebrate drift resources was a more important cause of density- dependent growth than depressed local benthic invertebrate abundance. These results suggest that lotic regions adjacent to beaver ponds act as potential reproductive “sinks” for dispersing juveniles confronting seasonal and flow-mediated restrictions on resource acquisition and growth, and the occurrence of seasonal bottlenecks to their survival, especially harsh winter conditions. Lake x brook F1 hybrid charr were observed in heterogeneous groups with lake charr or brook charr to assess the effects of different species on hybrid social behaviour. Levels of behavioural plasticity were low in relation to the behavioural differences between the parental and hybrid types. Feeding behaviour showed the most dramatic change, with higher levels in the lake charr treatment and lower levels in the brook charr treatment than controls, suggesting social facilitation. Even though only two measures varied significantly between treatments, there was a tendency for the frequencies and durations of all agonistic measures to increase in the presence of lake charr and decrease with brook charr. A cost-benefit argument is presented to account for this trend.  相似文献

Synopsis The development of photobehavioural responses in brook (Salvelinus fontinalis) and lake (S. namaycush) charr was studied by monitoring the intrasubstrate movements and concurrent photoresponse behaviour of incubated embryos and alevins. Photoresponse behaviour of both F-1 hybrids of the parent species was also recorded. All embryos initially moved downward in the substrate, however brook charr descended farther and faster into the substrate than did lake charr. Photoresponse tests demonstrated a similar pattern of photoresponse transformation from a photonegative to a photopositive state in both species. However, photoresponse reversal was faster, more extensive and occurred later in brook charr than in lake charr. Patterns of photoresponse change in F-1 hybrids were intermediate between those of the parent species. Photoresponse shifts preceded the onset of alevin emergence in both species. occurring when differential development of various morphological characters existed. Developmental states of characters were synchronously maximal towards the end of alevin emergence. Intermediate measures of morphological development were observed for F-1 hybrids. Possible functions and mechanisms of photoresponse transitions are discussed in relation to ecological differences between the species.  相似文献

The brook charr (Salvelinus fontinalis; Osteichthyes: Salmonidae) is a phenotypically diverse fish species inhabiting much of North America. But relatively few genetic diagnostic resources are available for this fish species. We isolated 41 microsatellites from S. fontinalis polymorphic in one or more species of salmonid fish. Thirty‐seven were polymorphic in brook charr, 15 in the congener Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and 14 in the lake charr (Salvelinus namaycush). Polymorphism was also relatively high in Oncorhynchus, where 21 loci were polymorphic in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and 16 in cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii) but only seven and four microsatellite loci were polymorphic in the more distantly related lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) and Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), respectively. One duplicated locus (Sfo228Lav) was polymorphic at both duplicates in S. fontinalis.  相似文献

Arctic charr, Salvelinus alpinus, and brook charr, Salvelinus fontinalis, inhabiting three lakes in the de la Trinité River and adjacent watershed, north shore, Gulf of St. Lawrence, were sampled in 1998. Arctic charr growth differed among lakes with the smallest fish coming from the largest lake. Arctic charr weight–length equation exponents were almost identical at all sample sites. Brook charr growth was also similar in all lakes. July stomach samples from Arctic charr consisted almost entirely of cladocerans in the largest lake, less so in the intermediate sized lake and were mostly aquatic insects in the smallest lake. Brook charr stomach contents were more varied and included fish. Carbon, nitrogen and sulphur stable isotope analyses (SIA) were used to provide a spatially and temporally integrated image of charr diets. SIA corroborated observed among-lake differences and similarities in species diets and suggested lake morphometry may influence measured results. The 15N signature in brook charr muscle increased with fork-length, as a result of a shift towards piscivory with size. The 15N signature in Arctic charr muscle tissue showed a significant negative correlation with fork-length in two of the studied lakes that appears related to dietary niche shifts. Results demonstrate the ability of SIA to detect dietary shifts otherwise unobservable from standard gut content analysis.  相似文献

1. Many fish stocks have declined, because of overharvesting, habitat destruction and introduced species. Despite efforts to rehabilitate some of these stocks, not all are responding or are recovering only slowly. 2. In freshwater systems, introduced crayfish are often problematic, and it has been suggested that their egg predation could reduce recruitment in depleted stocks of native fish. 3. Here, we report the results of a field experiment, using experimental cages, on the extent of predation on eggs of great Arctic charr (Salvelinus umbla) in Lake Vättern, Europe’s fifth largest lake. Here, the great Arctic charr has declined dramatically and is listed as critically endangered. 4. We were able to partition the total loss rate of eggs into background mortality, predation by introduced signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and predation by native fish. The mortality rate of charr eggs because of crayfish was estimated at more than five times that because of native fish. Of the total loss of eggs, 80% is believed to be caused by crayfish and 14% by fish, with 6% being natural background mortality. 5. In a worst case scenario, our data infer that only 25% of the original number of eggs would survive, compared with 75% in the absence of crayfish. This could impair recovery of the stock of the endangered great Arctic charr in Lake Vättern. 6. Contrary to earlier claims that crayfish predation on eggs of great Arctic charr is insignificant, our results indicate that crayfish predation may exceed fish predation and suggest that the abundance of signal crayfish on the spawning sites of great Arctic charr should be managed.  相似文献
