Phenotypic plasticity of the two salt marsh grasses Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis in salt marshes is crucial to their invasive ability, but the importance of phenotypic plasticity, nitrogen levels, and intraspecific competition to the success of the two species is unclear at present. Spartina alterniflora Loisel. is an extensively invasive species that has increased dramatically in distribution and abundance on the Chinese and European coasts, and has had considerable ecological impacts in the regions where it has established. Meanwhile, Phragmites australis Cav., a native salt marsh species on the east coast of China, has replaced the native S. alterniflora in many marshes along the Atlantic Coast of the US. This study determined the effects of nitrogen availability and culm density on the morphology, growth, and biomass allocation traits of Spartina alterniflora and Phragmites australis. A large number of morphological, growth, and biomass parameters were measured, and various derived values (culm: root ratio, specific leaf area, etc.) were calculated, along with an index of phenotypic plasticity. Nitrogen addition significantly affected growth performance and biomass allocation traits of Spartina alterniflora, and culm density significantly affected morphological characteristics in a negative way, especially for Spartina alterniflora. However, there were no significant interactions between nitrogen levels and culm density on the morphological parameters, growth performances parameters, and biomass allocation parameters of the two species. Spartina alterniflora appears to respond more strongly to nitrogen than to culm density and this pattern of phenotypic plasticity appears to offer an expedition for successful invasion and displacement of Phramites australias in China. The implication of this study is that, in response to the environmental changes that are increasing nitrogen levels, the range of Spartina alterniflora is expected to continue to expand on the east coast of China.  相似文献

Hybridization is an evolutionary mechanism capable of enhancing adaptive potential, especially among species in fragmented or disturbed ecosystems like coastal marshes. In this study, we evaluated whether hybridization might influence adaptive responses in coastal marshes that are susceptible to the effects of global environmental change. To do so, we examined the extent and nature of hybridization between Schoenoplectus americanus and S. pungens, two ecologically dominant sedges in low-lying marshes across Chesapeake Bay (USA). Observed patterns of variation at genetically based morphological traits, cpDNA and nuclear microsatellite markers confirm that introgressive hybridization occurs between the two species. Comparisons of microsatellite and cpDNA profiles found that hybridization is reciprocal, although a disproportionate number of hybrids exhibit genomic asymmetries favoring S. americanus. AIC model selection consistently identified latitude as the strongest explanatory variable for the distribution of parental species, although discriminant analysis indicated that distributions also correspond to variation in environmental conditions. Discriminant analysis further indicated that ecological correlates of hybrid and S. americanus genotypes are similar, but not uniformly so. These findings indicate that the boundary between S. americanus and S. pungens is porous, and that hybridization could influence responses of one or both species to changing environmental regimes.  相似文献

Invasive species continue to alter the plant communities of the eastern United States. To better understand the mechanisms and characteristics associated with invasive success, we studied competition between two Acer species. In a greenhouse, we tested (1) the effect of forest soil type (beneath an invasive and native stand) on seedling growth of the invasive Acer platanoides (Norway maple) and native A. rubrum (red maple), and the (2) effects of full (above- and below-ground) and partial inter-specific competition on species growth. We found A. rubrum growth was negatively affected by soil from the invaded stand, as it had lower above-ground (32%) and below-ground (26%) biomass, and number of leaves (20%) than in the native soil. The root:shoot resource allocations of A. platanoides depended on soil type, as it had 14% greater root:shoot mass allocation in the native soil; this ability to change root:shoot allocation may be contributing to the ecological success of the species. Widely published as having a large ecological amplitude, A. rubrum may be a useful species for ecological restoration where A. platanoides has been present, but the impacts of A. platanoides on soil functioning and subsequent plant interactions must be addressed before protocols for native reintroductions are improved and implemented.  相似文献

The influence of increased zinc concentrations on seed germination, growth activity, photosynthetic apparatus, and water metabolism in two perennial grasses (Phleum pratense L. and Elytrigia repens (L.) Nevski) was studied in laboratory and vegetation experiments to assess plant metal tolerance. In laboratory conditions it was established that seeds of both species may germinate in a wide range of zinc concentrations. In vegetation experiments, the possibility of successful growth and accumulation of biomass of both grasses in the presence of high zinc concentration in the root medium was revealed. At the same time, high water contents in root and shoot tissues were maintained, as well as the necessary intensity of photosynthesis (due to maintenance of the efficiency of photosystem II and the amount of carotenoids). It was noted that the established high resistance of both species of grasses to zinc, as well as their ability to accumulate significant amounts of metal ions in the roots, indicates that P. pratense and E. repens may be used for phytoremediation of soils contaminated with zinc.  相似文献

Perennial pastures are needed in farming systems in southern Australia to combat environmental problems such as dryland salinity. The mediterranean climate in southern Australia imposes constraints to the growth and survival of perennial plants. The aim of this study was to compare growth rates, resource allocation and root distribution in three perennial legumes, Medicago sativa L., Dorycnium hirsutum (L.) Ser. and Dorycnium rectum (L.) Ser., to identify different plant traits and their ecological and agronomic significance. Plants were grown in 1-m deep split tubes and destructive harvests were made every 2 weeks after plant emergence for 10 weeks. Leaf area and leaf, stem and root fresh and dry weights were measured. Maximum root depth and the root distribution were also determined. Seedlings of Dorycnium were slower to emerge and had a lower relative growth rate (RGR) than M. sativa. The slower RGR was associated with a lower specific leaf area (SLA) in D. hirsutum and a lower net assimilation rate (NAR) in D. rectum. Although all species allocated a similar proportion of biomass to roots, D. rectum had a shallower root distribution and took longer to produce deep roots. The slow growth rates of Dorycnium seedlings suggest that they are more prone to establishment problems due to competition from weeds or other pastures, and because they have less access to water at greater depth during summer drought. However, D. hirsutum displayed characteristics of a plant that is adapted to stressful environments and therefore may be able to grow in conditions where other perennial legumes cannot.  相似文献

Browsing by ungulates has become a hotly debated issue in many European mountain forests in the past century. Acer pseudoplatanus L. and Fraxinus excelsior L. are broadleaved tree species that are preferentially browsed by roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in central Europe. We analyzed growth data from shaded saplings of both tree species to quantify the extent to which height growth after game browsing is reduced in subsequent, unbrowsed years in forest stands. Sixty saplings of F. excelsior and A. pseudoplatanus from forest stands at Albisriederberg (Switzerland) were available to us that had been dissected into pieces that then were split in the middle for counting tree rings and assessing ungulate damage. We fitted the von Bertalanffy growth equation to these height growth data and included a reduction factor for winter browsing. Both tree species showed significantly reduced height growth in unbrowsed years after one to several browsing events in winter, and this effect increased with the number of browsing events. Saplings with a high growth rate showed a higher growth reduction. After winter browsing, height growth of A. pseudoplatanus saplings was less affected in unbrowsed years than that of F. excelsior saplings. We conclude that browsed saplings of these species in forest stands are not able to compensate browsing-induced height loss, but that height differences between browsed and unbrowsed saplings probably increase over time. A comparison between our analysis and the parameters estimated using equations published by Eiberle for predicting age at 130 cm height suggests that our parameter values are rather conservative estimates of the growth reduction effect after winter browsing. Neither F. excelsior nor A. pseudoplatanus show a distinct pattern in browsing-induced growth reduction with respect to soil moisture, nutrient level, and altitude. We thus conclude that our results are likely to be valid for a wide range of forested sites.  相似文献

North American oak species, with their characteristic strong episodic seasonal shoot growth, are highly problematic for clonal micropropagation, resulting in the inability to achieve a stabilized shoot multiplication stage. The potential for initiating and proliferating shoot cultures derived from Quercus alba, Q. bicolor and Q. rubra explants was investigated, and a micropropagation method for these species was developed. Branch segments from 6 to 7-year-old trees were forced-flushed and the forced shoots were used as source of explants for culture initiation. A consistent shoot multiplication stage was achieved, in 13 of the 15 genotypes established in vitro, although marked differences occurred in explants from different genotypes/species. The control of efficient shoot multiplication involved the culture of decapitated shoots in a stressful horizontal position on cytokinin-containing medium with a sequence of transfers within a 6-week subculture cycle, which was beneficial to overcoming the episodic character of shoot growth. During each subculture cycle, the horizontally placed explants were cultured on media containing 0.2 mg l−1 benzyladenine (BA) for 2 weeks with two successive transfers (2 weeks each) to fresh medium with 0.1 mg l−1 BA, giving a 6-week subculture cycle. The general appearance and vigor of Q. alba and Q. bicolor shoot cultures were improved by the inclusion of both 0.1 mg l−1 BA and 0.5 mg l−1 zeatin in the medium used for the second transfer within the 6-week subculture cycle. Addition of AgNO3 (3 mg l−1) to the shoot proliferation medium of Q. rubra had a significant positive effect on shoot development pattern by reducing deleterious symptoms, including shoot tip necrosis and early senescence of leaves. The three species showed acceptable in vitro rooting rates by culturing microcuttings in medium containing 25 mg l−1 indolebutyric acid for 48 h with subsequent transfer to auxin-free medium supplemented with 0.4% activated charcoal. Although an initial 5-day dark period generally improved the rooting response, it was detrimental to the quality of regenerated plantlets. However, activated charcoal stimulated not only the rooting frequencies, but it also enhanced plant quality, as evidenced by root, shoot and leaf growth.  相似文献

Community ecologists implicitly assume redundancy when they aggregate species into functional groups. But there have been remarkably few empirical efforts to investigate the accuracy of this concept in situ. The concept of redundancy could be roughly split into two components: the ecological redundancy (similar response to environmental variations involving similar ecological processes) and the functional redundancy (similar biological trait combinations shaping similar functional processes). Both types of redundancy are tested among the 3 invasive European Elodeas. In 11 sites and during two successive years 2004–2005, the cover growth rate of each Elodea species was monthly recorded. To test ecological redundancy, cover growth rates were related to a large suite of environmental variables. To test functional redundancy, 13 biological traits involved in competitive relationships were measured each month. Firstly, the redundancy hypothesis looks problematic for Elodea ernstiae. Indeed, the later possess numerous biological traits involved in light competition and niche overlap with the other Elodeas is very low. Secondly, ecological and functional redundancy can be successfully applied to Elodea canadensis and Elodea nuttallii. They share a large suite of biological traits leading to wide niche overlaps through the growing season. And the measured environmental variables do not differentially influence their growth rates, which are, in turn, controlled by a similar group of biological traits. In this way, the different invasiveness patterns of E. canadensis and E. nuttallii could be solely due to the ecological drift and their ecological dynamic could follow neutral rules.  相似文献

Peat bogs play a large role in the global sequestration of C, and are often dominated by different Sphagnum species. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how Sphagnum vegetation in peat bogs will respond to global warming. We performed a greenhouse experiment to study the effect of four temperature treatments (11.2, 14.7, 18.0 and 21.4°C) on the growth of four Sphagnum species: S. fuscum and S. balticum from a site in northern Sweden and S. magellanicum and S. cuspidatum from a site in southern Sweden. In addition, three combinations of these species were made to study the effect of temperature on competition. We found that all species increased their height increment and biomass production with an increase in temperature, while bulk densities were lower at higher temperatures. The hollow species S. cuspidatum was the least responsive species, whereas the hummock species S. fuscum increased biomass production 13-fold from the lowest to the highest temperature treatment in monocultures. Nutrient concentrations were higher at higher temperatures, especially N concentrations of S. fuscum and S. balticum increased compared to field values. Competition between S. cuspidatum and S. magellanicum was not influenced by temperature. The mixtures of S. balticum with S. fuscum and S. balticum with S. magellanicum showed that S. balticum was the stronger competitor, but it lost competitive advantage in the highest temperature treatment. These findings suggest that species abundances will shift in response to global warming, particularly at northern sites where hollow species will lose competitive strength relative to hummock species and southern species.  相似文献

We examined the effect of fire frequency and intensity on a Protea caffra tree population in the temperate montane grasslands of north-western KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. We assessed the effect of fire by comparing the population structure of the resprouter P. caffra in discrete bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) patches with that in the surrounding grassland matrix. Fuel biomass did not differ between grassland and bracken, but bracken fuel was significantly drier than grass. Above-ground fire temperatures and fireline intensity, measured by P. caffra char height, were significantly higher in the bracken habitat. Forty-two percent of the P. caffra population in grassland and in bracken persisted by coppice resprouts, having lost their original stem to fire damage. Exposure to higher intensity bracken fire suppressed P. caffra regeneration and caused greater adult mortality compared with trees in grassland. Consequently, the P. caffra population in bracken was skewed towards old age with most trees severely fire damaged. The high incidence of small trees in grassland indicates that a regular fire interval of 2–3 years does not negatively affect regeneration of P. caffra. However, in bracken patches regular high intensity fires cause high mortality among all P. caffra size classes and will ultimately result in local extinction. Bracken thus has the potential to significantly alter tree–grass interactions in these montane grasslands.  相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in body size and canine weaponry is commonly associated with high levels of male-male competition. When group living species do not rely heavily on male-male competition for access to females, sperm competition may represent a viable alternative strategy. Unlike most haplorhine primates, lemurs are typically monomorphic in body weight and canine height. We assessed variability of body mass dimorphism and canine size dimorphism in brown lemurs using morphometric data from 3 populations in southeastern Madagascar: Eulemur fulvus rufus, E. albocollaris, and hybrids of the species. We found significant male-biased canine dimorphism in E. albocollaris in conjunction with body-size monomorphism. We observed similar patterns in the hybrids, but E. fulvus rufus exhibited significant female-biased size dimorphism and canine monomorphism. Testes volume was relatively high across study populations. Thus, sperm competition appears to be strong in brown lemurs. E. albocollaris males combine sperm competition with large canines, but not higher body mass, indicating a difference in sexual strategy from most lemurs. Patterns of body mass and canine size dimorphism are not uniform across brown lemur populations, indicating that future work on these populations can explicitly test models that predict relationships between size dimorphism and various types of competition.  相似文献

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are hydroxyalkanoate polymers that are produced and accumulate by many kinds of bacteria. These polymers act as an energy store for bacteria. Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) is the most studied polymer in the PHA family. These polymers have awakened interest in the environmental and industrial research areas because they are biodegradable and have thermoplastic qualities, like polypropylene. In this work, we analyzed the PHB production in Bradyrhizobium sp., Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. phaseoli, and Rhizobium huautlense cultured with two different carbon sources. We did biochemical quantification of PHB production during the three phases of growth. Moreover, these samples were used for RNA extraction and phbC gene expression analysis via real-time PCR. The bacteria showed different manner of growth, PHB accumulation and phbC gene expression when different quantity and quality of carbon sources were used. These results showed that under different growth media conditions, the growth and metabolism of different species of bacteria were influenced. These differences reflect the increase or decrease in PHB accumulation.  相似文献

The cosmopolitan reed grass Phragmites australis (Poaceae) is an intensively studied species globally with a substantial focus in the last two decades on its invasive populations. Here we argue that P. australis meets the criteria to serve as a model organism for studying plant invasions. First, as a dominant species in globally important wetland habitats, it has generated significant pre-existing research, demonstrating a high potential for funding. Second, this plant is easy to grow and use in experiments. Third, it grows abundantly in a wide range of ecological systems and plant communities, allowing a broad range of research questions to be addressed. We formalize the designation of P. australis as a model organism for plant invasions in order to encourage and standardize collaborative research on multiple spatial scales that will help to integrate studies on the ecology and evolution of P. australis invasive populations, their response to global environmental change, and implications for biological security. Such an integrative framework can serve as guidance for studying invasive plant species at the population level and global spatial scale.  相似文献

An increasing number of recent studies indicate that multiple interacting factors can affect the invasion of plants. However, few studies have focused on asexual propagation and the interaction of propagation with environmental factors that regulate the invasive potential of introduced exotic species in aquatic habitats. This study was designed to investigate the differences in asexual propagation between introduced exotic and non-invasive native aquatic macrophytes in nutrient-poor and nutrient-rich sediments and to test the hypothesis that differences in asexual propagation (stem fragment production) and propagule establishment between introduced exotic and non-invasive native macrophytes are driven by sediment nutrient levels. Three exotic aquatic macrophytes (Elodea nuttallii, Myriophyllum aquaticum, and M. propinquum) recently introduced to China and their non-invasive native counterparts (Hydrilla verticillata, Moguraense, and M. ussuriense) were used for comparison in nutrient-poor (TN 0.59 and TP 0.03 mg g−1) and nutrient-rich (TN 2.35 and TP 0.10 mg g−1) sediments. After 8 weeks of growth, the exotic species tended to produce more total biomass, branch biomass and apical shoots and have higher relative growth rate (RGR) than their native counterparts in nutrient-rich sediment. Rooting efficiency and root growth of exotic fragments were higher than that of native counterparts in nutrient-rich sediment, although the survival rates of fragments did not differ between native and exotic species. In addition, superior traits (rooting efficiency and root growth) of exotic species were also observed in nutrient-poor sediment, but to a lesser degree than in nutrient-rich sediment. These results suggest that asexual propagation of these three introduced exotic macrophytes is more effective in nutrient-rich sediment than in nutrient-poor sediment in China.  相似文献

Enhanced nitrogen (N) levels accelerate expansion of Calamagrostis epigejos and Arrhenatherum elatius, highly aggressive expanders displacing original dry acidophilous grassland vegetation in the Podyjí National Park (Czech Republic). We compared the capability of Calamagrostis and Arrhenatherum under control and N enhanced treatments to (i) accumulate N and phosphorus (P) in plant tissues, (ii) remove N and P from above-ground biomass during senescence and (iii) release N and P from plant material during decomposition of fresh formed litter. In control treatment, significantly higher amounts of total biomass and fresh aboveground litter were observed in Calamagrostis than in Arrhenatherum. Contrariwise, nutrient concentrations were significantly higher (11.6–14.3 mg N g−1 and 2.3 mg P g−1) in Arrhenatherum peak aboveground biomass than in Calamagrostis (8.4–10.3 mg N g−1 and 1.6–1.7 mg P g−1). Substantial differences between species were found in resorption of nutrients, mainly P, at the ends of growing seasons. While P concentrations in Arrhenatherum fresh litter were twice and three times higher (1.6–2.5 mg P g−1) than in Calamagrostis (0.7–0.8 mg P g−1), N concentrations were nearly doubled in Arrhenatherum (13.1–15.6 mg N g−1) in comparison with Calamagrostis (7.4–8.7 mg N g−1). Thus, the nutrients (N and mainly P) were retranslocated from the aboveground biomass of Calamagrostis probably more effectively in comparison with Arrhenatherum at the end of the growing season. On the other hand, Arrhenatherum litter was decomposed faster and consequently nutrient release (mainly N and P) was higher in comparison with Calamagrostis which pointed to different growth and nutrient use strategies of studied grass species.  相似文献

Morphology, biomass accumulation and allocation, gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence were compared for one-year-old seedlings of Salix psammophila and Artemisia ordosica, two dominant desert species, in response to two water supplies (equivalent to 315.0 mm for present precipitation in growing season and to 157.5 mm for future decreasing precipitation) during 105 d. For both species, photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), net photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, biomass accumulation in different organs, tree height, number of leaves, and leaf area were reduced in response to the decrease in water supply. For both species, instantaneous water use efficiency was not affected by the water deficit. However, diurnal patterns of gas exchange and biomass allocation were affected in different ways for the two species, with notably a decrease in specific leaf area and an increase in root : shoot ratio for S. psammophila only. Overall, S. psammophila was more responsive to the decreasing precipitation than A. ordosica.  相似文献

The Alcon blue butterfly (Maculinea alcon) parasitizes the nests of several Myrmica ant species. In Denmark, it uses M. rubra and M. ruginodis, but never M. scabrinodis. To further examine the basis of this specificity and local co-adaptation between host and parasite, the pattern of growth and survival of newly-adopted caterpillars of M. alcon in Myrmica subcolonies was examined in the laboratory. M. alcon caterpillars were collected from three populations differing in their host use, and reared in laboratory nests of all three ant species collected from each M. alcon population. While there were differences in the pattern of growth of caterpillars from different populations during the first few months after adoption, which depended on host ant species and the site from which the ants were collected, there was no evidence of major differences in final size achieved. Survival was, however, much higher in nests of M. rubra than in nests of M. ruginodis and M. scabrinodis, even for caterpillars from a population that is never known to use M. rubra as a host in the field. The caterpillars of M. alcon thus do not show local adaptation in their pattern of growth and survival, but instead show a pattern that may reflect different nestmate recognition abilities of the host ants, related to their sociogenetic organisation. The pattern of observed host ant use in the field seems to result from a combination of differences in local host availability and locally adapted infectivity, modulated by smaller differences in survivorship in the nests of the different host ants.  相似文献

The ability to understand and predict the success of invasive plant species in their new ranges is increased when there is a sympatric native congener available for comparison. Celastrus orbiculatus (oriental bittersweet) is a liana introduced into the United States in the mid-1800s from East Asia as an ornamental plant. Its native congener, Celastrus scandens (American bittersweet), ranges from the east coast of the United States as far west as Wyoming. In the Northeastern United States, C. orbiculatus is continuing to expand its range while C. scandens appears to be in serious decline. One hypothesis for this decline is that C. scandens does not have such a wide range of ecological tolerances in the current landscape as C. orbiculatus, which seems to tolerate a greater range of resource conditions. To investigate this hypothesis, we transplanted these two species into ten sites that spanned a full range of light and soil moisture conditions to compare their establishment and performance in terms of aboveground growth (biomass and height) and mortality. After two years, C. orbiculatus showed significantly lower mortality and greater biomass across all resource conditions compared to C. scandens. In addition, C. orbiculatus preferred more mesic soil moisture conditions, while C. scandens performed better in drier soil moisture conditions. Since much of the Northeastern United States is now forested, this preference for mesic soil conditions could make it more successful than C. scandens in the region. This study shows the utility of manipulative experiments, particularly those using congeneric native species as benchmarks, for assessing the causes and predicting the course of invasions.  相似文献

A study was made of environmental factors affecting the growth of Rhizoclonium riparium in order to evaluate its suitability for large-scale culturing. The results indicate that under the natural conditions prevailing at Taishi, Taiwan, this species can grow year-round, with a monthly biomass production (oven-dried) of 945–1540 kg ha−1 pond surface (assuming a pond depth of 1 m). The specific growth rate ranged from –2.1 to 10.4% per day. Salinity and temperature, both influenced the rate significantly, with optimal values at 20% and 25 °C, respectively. Short (2-mm) lengths of filaments had a higher specific growth rate than longer (20 mm) filaments. Under rotational culturing conditions, the specific growth rate was reduced when flow was increased.  相似文献

Maculinea butterflies are social parasites of Myrmica ants. Methods to study the strength of host ant specificity in the MaculineaMyrmica association include research on chemical and acoustic mimicry as well as experiments on ant adoption and rearing behaviour of Maculinea larvae. Here we present results of laboratory experiments on adoption, survival, development and integration of M. teleius larvae within the nests of different Myrmica host species, with the objective of quantifying the degree of specialization of this Maculinea species. In the laboratory, a total of 94 nests of four Myrmica species: M. scabrinodis, M. rubra, M. ruginodis and M. rugulosa were used. Nests of M. rubra and M. rugulosa adopted M. teleius larvae more readily and quickly than M. ruginodis colonies. No significant differences were found in the survival rates of M. teleius larvae reared by different ant species. Early larval growth of M. teleius larvae differed slightly among nests of four Myrmica host species. Larvae reared by colonies of M. rugulosa which were the heaviest at the beginning of larval development had the lowest mean larval body mass after 18 weeks compared to those reared by other Myrmica species. None of the M. teleius larvae was carried by M. scabrinodis or M. rubra workers after ant nests were destroyed, which suggests a lack of integration with host colonies. Results indicate that Myrmica species coming from the same site differ in their ability to adopt and rear M. teleius larvae but there was no obvious adaptation of this butterfly species to one of the host ant species. This may explain why, under natural conditions, all four ants can be used as hosts of this butterfly species. Slight advantages of particular Myrmica species as hosts at certain points in butterfly larval development can be explained by the ant species biology and colony structure rather than by specialization of M. teleius.  相似文献
