Bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Golden Saxa) plants were grown under low artificial light or under natural daylight. The rate of net photosynthesis (PN) was measured at: CO2 partial pressure, p(CO2), of 0.03, 0.09 or 0.15 kPa; O2 partial pressure, p(O2), of 2, 21 or 31 kPa and at light intensities of 350 or 1000 μmol m−2 s−1 (photosynthetically active radiation). In plants which had been grown under natural light, stimulation of PN at 21 kPa p(O2) was found only at elevated p(CO2) and high light. It is proposed that this phenomenon is dependent on a high capacity of the photosynthetic apparatus to regenerate ribulose 1.5-bisphosphate.  相似文献

To elucidate how excess light energy is dissipated during water deficit, net photosynthesis (PN), stomatal conductance (gs), intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) and Chl a fluorescence were investigated in control and drought-stressed tomato plants ( Lycopersicon esculentum ). Gross O2 evolution (Eo) and gross O2 uptake (Uo) were determined by a mass spectrometric 16O/18O2 isotope technique. Under drought stress PN, gs, ci and Uo decline. While photochemical fluorescence quenching decreases under water deficit, non-photochemical quenching rises. The maximal efficiency of PSII measured in the dark is not affected by drought; however, in the light, Eo decreases under water deficit. The ratio PN/Eo falls under stress while the ratio Uo/Eo increases. We conclude that tomato plants follow a double strategy to avoid photodamage under drought stress conditions: (1) a substantial portion of light energy is emitted as heat and PSII activity is downregulated. This results in a decrease in Eo as well as PN and Uo. Despite reduced charge separation at PSII, the decline of CO2 assimilation because of lowered stomatal conductance and metabolic changes results in the need of degrading excessive photosynthetic electrons. (2) Oxygen is used as an alternative electron acceptor in photorespiration or Mehler reaction and Uo rises relative to Eo.  相似文献

Diurnal regulation of photosynthesis in understory saplings   总被引:6,自引:1,他引:5
Photosynthetic rates of plants grown in natural systems exhibit diurnal patterns often characterized by an afternoon decline, even when measured under constant light and temperature conditions. Since we thought changes in the carbohydrate status could cause this pattern through feedback from starch and sucrose synthesis, we studied the natural fluctuations in photosynthesis rates of plants grown at 36 and 56 Pa CO2 at a FACE (free-air-CO2-enrichment) research site. Light-saturated photosynthesis varied by 40% during the day and was independent of the light-limited quantum yield of photosynthesis, which varied little through the day. Photosynthesis did not correspond with xylem water potential or leaf carbohydrate build-up, but rather with diurnal changes in air vapor-pressure deficit and light. The afternoon decline in photosynthesis also corresponded with decreased stomatal conductance and decreased Rubisco carboxylation efficiency which in turn allowed leaf-airspace CO2 partial pressure to remain constant. Growth at elevated CO2 did not affect the afternoon decline in photosynthesis, but did stimulate early-morning photosynthesis rates relative to the rest of the day. Plants grown at 56 Pa CO2 had higher light-limited quantum yields than those at 36 Pa CO2 but, there was no growth–CO2 effect on quantum yield when measured at 2 kPa O2. Therefore, understory plants have a high light-limited quantum yield that does not vary through the day. Thus, the major diurnal changes in photosynthesis occur under light-saturated conditions which may help understory saplings maximize their sunfleck-use-efficiency.  相似文献

Leaf water potentials below threshold values result in reduced stomatal conductance (gs). Stomatal closure at low leaf water potentials may serve to protect against cavitation of xylem. Possible control of gs by leaf water potential or hydraulic conductance was tested by drying the rooting medium in four herbaceous annual species until gs was reduced and then lowering the [CO2] to determine whether gs and transpiration rate could be increased and leaf water potential decreased and whether hydraulic conductance was reduced at the resulting lower leaf water potential. In all species, low [CO2] could reverse the stomatal closure because of drying despite further reductions in leaf water potential, and the resulting lower leaf water potentials did not result in reductions in hydraulic conductance. The relative sensitivity of gs to internal [CO2] in the leaves of dry plants of each species averaged three to four times higher than in leaves of wet plants. Two species in which gs was reputed to be insensitive to [CO2] were examined to determine whether high leaf to air water vapor pressure differences (D) resulted in increased stomatal sensitivity to [CO2]. In both species, stomatal sensitivity to [CO2] was indeed negligible at low D, but increased with D, and low [CO2] partly or fully reversed closure caused by high D. In no case did low leaf water potential or low hydraulic conductance during drying of the air or the rooting medium prevent low [CO2] from increasing gs and transpiration rate.  相似文献

Seedlings of two tree species from the Atlantic lowlands of Costa Rica, Ochroma la-gopus Swartz, a fast-growing pioneer species, and Pentaclethra macroloba (Willd.) Kuntze, a slower-growing climax species, were grown under enriched atmospheric CO2 in controlled environment chambers. Carbon dioxide concentrations were maintained at 350 and 675 μl 1−1 under photosynthetic photon flux densities of 500 μol m−2 s−1 and temperatures of 26°C day and 20°C night. Total biomass of both species increased significantly in the elevated CO2 treatment; the increase in biomass was greatest for the pioneer species, O. lagopus . Both species had greater leaf areas and specific leaf weights with increased atmospheric CO2. However, the ratio of non-pho-tosynthetic tissue to leaf area also increased in both species leading to decreased leaf area ratios. Plants of both species grown at 675 μl 1−1 CO2 had lower chlorophyll contents and photosynthesis on a leaf area basis than those grown at 350 μl 1−1. Reductions in net photosynthesis occurred despite increased internal CO2 concentrations in the CO2-enriched treatment. Stomatal conductances of both species decreased with CO2-enrichment resulting in significant increases in water use efficiency.  相似文献

Fruit effects on photosynthesis in Prunus persica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Seasonal measurements of net CO2 assimilation, leaf conductance and mesophyll conductance were made in the field on mature, fruiting and defruited Prunus persica L. Batsch trees. During early stages of fruit growth there were no significant differences in leaf gas exchange characteristics between fruiting and defruited trees. During the early part of the last stage of fruit growth, CO2 assimilation rates were 11–15% higher in fruiting trees than defruited trees. These increased assimilation rates corresponded with approximately 30% increases in leaf conductance and only minor changes in mesophyll conductances or leaf CO2 assimilation capacity as indicated by leaf nitrogen content. It is concluded that under the field conditions of this study the fruit effect on photosynthesis is primarily related to stomatal behavior.  相似文献

Three soybean ( Glycine max L. Merr.) cultivars (Maple Glen, Clark and CNS) were exposed to three CO2 concentrations (370, 555 and 740 μmol mol−1) and three growth temperatures (20/15°, 25/20° and 31/26°C, day/night) to determine intraspecific differences in single leaf/whole plant photosynthesis, growth and partitioning, phenology and final biomass. Based on known carboxylation kinetics, a synergistic effect between temperature and CO2 on growth and photosynthesis was predicted since elevated CO2 increases photosynthesis by reducing photorespiration and photorespiration increases with temperature. Increasing CO2 concentrations resulted in a stimulation of single leaf photosynthesis for 40–60 days after emergence (DAE) at 20/15°C in all cultivars and for Maple Glen and CNS at all temperatures. For Clark, however, the onset of flowering at warmer temperatures coincided with the loss of stimulation in single leaf photosynthesis at elevated CO2 concentrations. Despite the season-long stimulation of single leaf photosynthesis, elevated CO2 concentrations did not increase whole plant photosynthesis except at the highest growth temperature in Maple Glen and CNS, and there was no synergistic effect on final biomass. Instead, the stimulatory effect of CO2 on growth was delayed by higher temperatures. Data from this experiment suggest that: (1) intraspecific variation could be used to select for optimum soybean cultivars with future climate change; and (2) the relationship between temperature and CO2 concentration may be expressed differently at the leaf and whole plant levels and may not solely reflect known changes in carboxylation kinetics.  相似文献

The effects of manganese (Mn) toxicity on photosynthesis in white birch ( Betula platyphylla var. japonica ) leaves were examined by the measurement of gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence in hydroponically cultured plants. The net photosynthetic rate at saturating light and ambient CO2 (Ca) of 35 Pa decreased with increasing leaf Mn concentrations. The carboxylation efficiency, derived from the difference in CO2 assimilation rate at intercellular CO2 pressures attained at Ca of 13 Pa and O Pa, decreased with greater leaf Mn accumulation. Net photosynthetic rate at saturating light and saturating CO2 (5%) also declined with leaf Mn accumulation while the maximum quantum yield of O2 evolution at saturating CO2 was not affected. The maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm) was little affected by Mn accumulation in white birch leaves over a wide range of leaf Mn concentrations (2–17 mg g−1 dry weight). When measured in the steady state of photosynthesis under ambient air at 430 μmol quanta m−2 s−1, the levels of photochemical quenching (qP) and the excitation capture efficiency of open PSII (F'v/F'm) declined with Mn accumulation in leaves. The present results suggest that excess Mn in leaves affects the activities of the CO2 reduction cycle rather than the potential efficiency of photochemistry, leading to increases in QA reduction state and thermal energy dissipation, and a decrease in quantum yield of PSII in the steady state.  相似文献

Methods of estimating the mesophyll conductance (gm) to the movement of CO2 from the substomatal airspace to the site of fixation are expensive or rely upon numerous assumptions. It is proposed that, for C3 species, measurement of the response of photosynthesis to [O2] at limiting [CO2], combined with a standard biochemical model of photosynthesis, can provide an estimate of gm. This method was used to determine whether gm changed with [CO2] and with water stress in soybean leaves. The value of gm estimated using the O2 response method agreed with values obtained using other methods. The gm was unchanged over the tested range of substomatal [CO2]. Water stress, which decreased stomatal conductance (gs) by about 80%, did not affect gm, while the model parameter VCmax was reduced by about 25%. Leaves with gs reduced by about 90% had gm values reduced by about 50%, while VCmax was reduced by about 64%. It is concluded that gm in C3 species can be conveniently estimated using the response of photosynthesis to [O2] at limiting [CO2], and that gm in soybean was much less sensitive to water stress than gs, and was somewhat less sensitive to water stress than VCmax.  相似文献

Abstract: Chlorophyll fluorescence imaging is a powerful tool to monitor temporal and spatial dynamics of photosynthesis and photosynthesis-related metabolism. In this communication, we use high resolution chlorophyll fluorescence imaging techniques under strictly controlled conditions to quantify day courses of relative effective quantum yield (φPSII) of an entire leaf of the crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) plant Kalanchoë daigremontiana at different light intensities. Careful interpretation of the combined gas exchange and fluorescence data, in combination with micro malate samples, allow the interpretation of underlying metabolic properties, such as leaf internal CO2 concentration (ciCO2) and energy demand of the cells. Spatial variations of φPSII, which occur as running wave fronts at the transition from phase III to phase IV of CAM, may reflect spatial differences of ciCO2, which are preserved in the tightly packed mesophyll cells of K. daigremontiana. An endogenous rhythm is driven by a master switch which mediates between malate storage and malate release to and from the vacuole, however, using fluorescence techniques, four different metabolic states can be distinguished which also account for the activity of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase.  相似文献

Gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence and water potentials, together with ascorbate and glutathione concentrations, were studied during moderate and severe drought stress and in response to re-watering in Allocasuarina luehmannii seedlings. Moderate drought stress (MS) decreased stomatal conductance (gs) and net CO2 assimilation rates (A) to ∼40% and ∼60% of control values, respectively, and caused decreases in internal CO2 concentration (Ci) and maximum light use efficiency of light-acclimated photosystem II (PSII) centres (Fv'/Fm'). Severe drought stress (SS) decreased gs and A to ∼5% and ∼15% of the control values, respectively, and caused increases in Ci and PSII excitation pressure (1 − qP), as well as decreases in water potentials, effective quantum yield of PSII (ΦPSII), maximum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) and Fv'/Fm'. Ascorbate and glutathione concentrations remained unaffected by drought treatments, but ascorbate became more oxidised under severe stress. MS seedlings recovered within 1 day (Ci, Fv'/Fm') to 1 week (A, gs) of re-watering. In comparison, SS seedlings had longer-lasting after-stress effects, with recovery of many variables (gs, water potentials, Fv/Fm, ΦPSII, Fv'/Fm') taking between 1 and 3 weeks from re-watering. We found no indication that interaction with antioxidants played a significant role in recovery. In conclusion, A. luehmannii seedlings appear to function normally under moderate drought, but do not seem to have particular metabolic tolerance mechanisms to endure severe drought, which may have implications for its persistence under climate change at the drier margins of its distribution.  相似文献

Abstract. A model is developed for photosynthesis and photorespiration in C3 plants, using an equation for the multisubslrate ordered reaction of ribulose 1,5-bisphosphalc carboxylase-oxygenase (Farazdaghi & Edwards, 1988). The model examines net CO2 fixation with O2 inhibition, and mutual inhibition when equilibrium exists between carboxylation and oxygenation (at the CO2 compensation point). It is based on the stoichiometry of energy requirements and O2, and CO2 exchange in the cycles, the quantum efficiency for RuBP generation, the maximum capacity for RuBP generation, the carboxylation efficiency with respect to [CO2], and the oxygenation efficiency with respect to [O2]. With increasing concentrations of CO2 above the CO2 compensation point, decreasing quantum flux density, or decreasing O2, simulations show that the rate of photorespiration progressively decreases. The two components of O2 inhibition of photosynthesis change disproportionately with increasing CO2 concentration. According to the model, the energy utilized during photosynthesis at the CO2 compensation point is about half that under atmospheric conditions.  相似文献

For cacti with persistent, relatively large leaves, most shoot CO2 uptake under well-watered conditions occurs by the leaves using the C3 pathway. For three species in the primitive subfamily Pereskioideae, droughts of 7 or 14 days decreased leaf daytime net CO2 uptake by an average of 49 and 88%, respectively; these species always had a net CO2 release at night by the leaves and both at night and during the day by the stems. For three leafy species in subfamily Opuntioideae, 7 and 14 days of drought reduced leaf daytime net CO2 uptake by 90 and 100%, respectively. Although drought reduced the total CO2 uptake over 24 h, the average percentage occurring at night by the leaves of these species increased from 5% under wet conditions to 71% after 7 days of drought to 99% after 14 days of drought. For two of the three species of Opuntioideae, 7 days of drought caused the small net CO2 uptake by the sterns to shift from the daytime to the nighttime, while for the third species drought caused a reduction of its stem nocturnal net CO2 uptake. Thus, shifts from predominantly daytime to predominantly nighttime net CO2 uptake can be induced by drought for the leaves and the stems of leafy cacti in subfamily Opuntioideae, indicating a high degree of biochemical versatility.  相似文献

Plant responses to elevated CO2 can be modified by many environmental factors, but very little attention has been paid to the interaction between CO2 and changes in vapour pressure deficit (VPD). Thirty-day-old alfalfa plants ( Medicago sativa L. cv. Aragón), which were inoculated with Sinorhizobium meliloti 102F78 strain, were grown for 1 month in controlled environment chambers at 25/15°C, 14 h photoperiod, and 600 µmol m−2 s−1 photosynthetic photon flux (PPF), using a factorial combination of CO2 concentration (400 µmol mol−1 or 700 µmol mol−1) and vapour pressure deficit (0.48 kPa or 1.74 kPa, which corresponded to relative humidities of 85% and 45% at 25°C, respectively). Elevated CO2 strongly stimulated plant growth under high VPD conditions, but this beneficial effect was not observed under low VPD. Under low VPD, elevated CO2 also did not enhance plant photosynthesis, and plant water stress was greatest for plants grown at elevated CO2 and low VPD. Moreover, plants grown under elevated CO2 and low VPD had a lower leaf soluble protein and photosynthetic activity (photosynthetic rate and carboxylation efficiency) than plants grown under elevated CO2 and high VPD. Elevated CO2 significantly increased leaf adaxial and abaxial temperatures. Because the effects of elevated CO2 were dependent on vapour pressure deficit, VPD needs to be controlled in experiments studying the effect of elevated CO2 as well as considered in the extrapolations of results to a warmer, high-CO2 world.  相似文献

The effect of drought on CO2 assimilation and leaf conductance was studied in three northern hardwood species: Quercus rubra L., Acer rubrum L. and Populus grandidentata Michx. Leaf gas exchange characteristics at two CO2 levels (320 and 620 μl I−1) and temperatures from 20 to 35°C were measured at the end of a dry period and shortly after 10 cm of rainfall. The effects of drought varied with species, temperature and CO2 level. Calculated values of internal CO2 concentration showed little or no decline during drought. Differences in assimilation, before vs after the rains, were most apparent at the higher CO2 level. These latter two observations indicate nonstomatal disruption of CO2 assimilation during the dry period. In P. grandidentata there was a substantial interaction between drought and temperature, with a resultant shift in the temperature for maximum assimilation to lower temperatures during drought. During drought, internal CO2 concentrations increased sharply in all three species under the combined conditions of high temperatures and the higher CO2 level.  相似文献

Trees in the flooded forest of the Mapire River in Venezuela suffer a decrease in photosynthetic rate (A) when flood begins, which is reverted at maximum flood. Changes in A are accompanied by similar changes in stomatal conductance (gs), and the possibility of changes in photosynthetic capacity is not ruled out. In order to understand how relative stomatal and non-stomatal limitations of photosynthesis are affected by flooding, we studied the seasonal changes in A and its response to intercellular CO2 concentration in trees of Campsiandra laurifolia , Symmeria paniculata , Acosmium nitens and Eschweilera tenuifolia . Flooding caused in trees of C.   laurifolia and S.   paniculata a reduction in A, gs, carboxylation efficiency and total soluble protein (TSP), whereas gas exchange in A.   nitens and E.   tenuifolia was more sensitive to drought. Under flooding, relative stomatal limitation (Ls) was on average half the highest, and relative non-stomatal limitation (Lns) increased from the dry season to flooding. Under full flood, A, gs and TSP regained high values. A was positively correlated to light-saturated electron transport rate, suggesting that part of the decrease in A under flooding was due to impairment of photosynthetic capacity. Under flooding, not only stomatal closure but also increased Lns causes a reduction in photosynthesis of all four species, and a process of acclimation as flooding progresses allows gas exchange and related variables to regain high values.  相似文献

Short-term exposure to high CO2 increases rates of photosynthesis and growth in soybeans, but with prolonged high CO2 exposure, these high rates are sometimes not maintained. Growth of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill cv. Fiskeby V) seedlings kept for 25 days at atmospheres of 350 or 1000 μ/l CO2 was compared with growth of plants given 2, 4 or 6 day alternating exposure to high and low CO2 levels (13 days of total exposure to each level). Final dry weight of plants increased with number of days in high CO2 but leaf areas were not greatly affected. Thus dry weight gains per unit leaf area (net assimilation rates) were higher in high CO2 than in low CO2 throughout the entire period of the experiment and the pattern of exposure to high CO2 did not affect the rate of dry weight gain in high CO2.  相似文献

Few studies have investigated the interaction of ultraviolet (UV)-B radiation and CO2 concentration on plants. We studied the combined effects of UV-B radiation and CO2 concentration on canola ( Brassica napus cv. 46A65) under four growth conditions – ambient CO2 with UV-B (control), elevated CO2 with UV-B, ambient CO2 without UV-B, and elevated CO2 without UV-B – to determine whether the adverse effects of UV-B are mitigated by elevated CO2. Elevated CO2 significantly increased plant height and seed yield, whereas UV-B decreased them. Elevated CO2 ameliorated the adverse effects of UV-B in plant height. UV-B did not affect the physical characteristics of leaf but CO2 did. Certain flower and fruit characteristics were affected negatively by UV-B and positively by CO2. UV-B did not affect net photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance but decreased water use efficiency (WUE). Elevated CO2 significantly increased net photosynthesis and WUE. Neither UV-B nor CO2 affected chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence. UV-B significantly decreased Chl b and increased the ratio of Chl a / b . Elevated CO2 decreased only the ratio of Chl a / b . UV-B significantly increased UV-absorbing compounds while CO2 had no effect on them. Both UV-B and CO2 significantly increased epicuticular wax content. Many significant relationships were found between morphological, physiological, and chemical parameters. This study showed that elevated CO2 can partially ameliorate some of the adverse effects of UV-B radiation in B . napus .  相似文献

To test the prediction that elevated CO2 increases the maximum leaf area index (LAI) through a stimulation of photosynthesis, we exposed model herbaceous communities to two levels of CO2 crossed with two levels of soil fertility. Elevated CO2 stimulated the initial rate of canopy development and increased cumulative LAI integrated over the growth period, but it had no effect on the maximum LAI. In contrast to CO2, increased soil nutrient availability caused a substantial increase in maximum LAI. Elevated CO2 caused a slight increase in leaf area and nitrogen allocated to upper canopy layers and may have stimulated leaf turnover deep in the canopy. Gas exchange measurements of intact communities made near the time of maximum LAI indicated that soil nutrient availability, but not CO2 enrichment, caused a substantial stimulation of net ecosystem carbon exchange. These data do not support our prediction of a higher maximum LAI by elevated CO2 because the initial stimulation of LAI diminished by the end of the growth period. However, early in development, leaf area and carbon assimilation of communities may have been greatly enhanced. These results suggest that the rate of canopy development in annual communities may be accelerated with future increases in atmospheric CO2 but that maximum LAI is set by soil fertility.  相似文献

Abstract. The common marine macroalga Ulva was found to have a surface pH of about 10 during photosynthesis. Under such a condition, the equilibrium CO2 concentration within the unstirred layer would be below reported CO2 compensation points, and dehydration of HCO3 could not occur. Even at a compensation point approaching zero, uncatalysed rates of HCO3 to CO2 conversion within the unstirred layer volume could not support photosynthetic rates as measured under stirred conditions in the presence of a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor. Based on this, it is concluded that Ulva takes up HCO3. It is likely that HCO3 uptake leads to high internal CO2 levels which, in turn, suppress photorespiration and thus cause this plant's efficient gas exchange features. Carbonic anhydrase activity was measurable only in plant extracts. However, inhibitor studies suggest the presence of a surface enzyme. The possible functions of extracellular carbonic anhydrase in Ulva are assessed in terms of CO2 hydration during emergence and a possible HCO3, transport system.  相似文献
