Epiphytic, epilithic, and surface sediment diatom assemblages were identified and enumerated from 35 study ponds on CapeHerschel (78°37″N, 74°42″W), east-central Ellesmere Island, Canada. All the sites are shallow (maximum depth <2 m), clear, oligotrophic, and freshwater. The ponds freeze completely for 10 months of the year. Major ion concentrations are relatively similar among the 35 sites, although environmental gradients exist. Over 130 diatom taxa from 28 genera were identified in the periphyton samples. Marked differences in species composition were evident among the ponds. Moreover, many of the diatoms exhibited varying degrees of microhabitat specificity. Variance partitioning by canonical correspondence analysis showed that 26% of the total variance exhibited by diatom species composition could be accounted for by the measured environmental variables (i.e. 10.2% by habitat and 15.8% by water chemistry). Pondwater alkalinity best explained the distribution of taxa, and weighted averaging regression and calibration were used to develop a transfer function to infer pondwater alkalinity from the diatom assemblages. Other important environmental variables included [Na+] for the epilithic and [SiO2] for the epiphytic assemblages.  相似文献

Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to explore the relationship between measured environmental variables and surficial diatom (Bacillariophyceae) assemblages in alkaline lakes from southeastern Ontario. Total nitrogen (TN), watershed area, alkalinity, and maximum depth each explain significant (P ≤ 0.05) directions of variance in the distribution of diatom taxa. TN was highly correlated to total phosphorus (TP) (r = 0.92), chlorophyll a (r = 0.86), and Secchi depth (r =0.77). When a series of CCAs were run with the first axis constrained to each of these variables in turn, the ratio of the eigenvalue of the first axis to that of the second axis (λ1/λ2) was highest for TN, indicating that TN best explained the distribution of the diatom assemblages in this set of lakes. Furthermore, results of Monte Carlo permutation tests indicated that these four variables did not act independently on the diatom assemblages. Therefore, TN was selected to represent these four closely related variables to infer lake trophic status. Weighted-averaging regression and calibration (with classical deshrinking) were used to develop transfer functions to infer TN from the relative abundances of 83 diatom taxa recovered from the surficial sediments of 51 lakes. There was a good correlation between diatom-inferred TN concentrations and measured TN concentrations (r2= 0.75, n = 51). The weighted-averaging regression and calibration model was used to infer lake trophic status (represented by TN) from diatom assemblages presented in the sediments from Little Round Lake, Ontario. These data were used in conjunction with historical land-use data in order to quantify the sequence and extent of nutrient enrichment related to human activity in the watershed area.  相似文献

The relationship between environmental variables, community composition and the sensitivity of periphyton on artificial substrata to the herbicide atrazine (EC50 values obtained by concentration-effect curves of photosynthesis to atrazine) was studied for 20 stream and river sites on a latitudinal across Europe (Sweden, The Netherlands, Spain). Sensitivity to atrazine was higher in Swedish than in the Spanish or Dutch sites. Direct gradient analyses were used to relate diatom taxa and algal groups with environmental variables. A first redundancy analysis (RDA) based on diatom taxa showed a pollution gradient (atrazine and nutrient concentration) associated to diatom taxa that are indicators of different degrees of pollution. A second RDA based on algal groups showed that diatom-dominated communities corresponded both to sites at higher altitudes and less industrialized areas and to sites with higher atrazine concentration; Cyanobacteria were the most common in industrial areas, whereas Chlorophyceae dominated in sites with high water temperature and alkalinity. Linear regression analyses were applied to find the relationship between the ordination axes obtained and the EC50 values. First axes of both RDA showed significant or marginally significant relationship with atrazine sensitivity. Regression analyses for the Spanish sites indicated that the sensitivity to atrazine was related with light conditions (EC50 was positively correlated with light) and the percentage of different algal groups (EC50 was positively correlated with the percentage of diatoms and negatively correlated with the percentage of green algae). The results indicating that differences in sensitivity are related to environmental variables such as light, nutrients or atrazine concentration, permitted us to identify biological indicators of sensitivity to atrazine in lotic systems: Bacillariophyceae-dominated periphyton communities were more tolerant than Chlorophyceae and Chrysophyceae-dominated communities. In addition, diatom taxa found to be tolerant to atrazine in this study have been considered in the literature to be tolerant to organic pollution. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Ecotones are key areas for the detection of global change because many are predicted to move with shifts in climate. Prince of Wales Island, in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, spans the transition between mid‐ to high‐Arctic ecoregions. We analyzed limnological variables and recent diatom assemblages from its lakes and ponds to determine if assemblages reflected this ecotone. Limnological gradients were short, and water chemistry explained 20.0% of diatom variance in a redundancy analysis (RDA), driven primarily by dissolved organic carbon, Ca and SO4. Most taxa were small, benthic forms; key taxa such as planktonic Cyclotella species were restricted to the warmer, southern portion of the study area, while benthic Staurosirella were associated with larger, ice‐dominated lakes. Nonetheless, there were no significant changes in diatom assemblages across the mid‐ to high‐Arctic ecoregion boundary. We combined our data set with one from nearby Cornwallis Island to expand the study area and lengthen its environmental gradients. Within this expanded data set, 40.6% of the diatom variance was explained by a combination of water chemistry and geographic variables, and significant relationships were revealed between diatom distributions and key limnological variables, including pH, specific conductivity, and chl‐a. Using principal coordinates analysis, we estimated community turnover with latitude and applied piecewise linear regression to determine diatom ecotone positions. A pronounced transition was present between Prince of Wales Island and the colder, more northerly Cornwallis Island. These data will be important in detecting any future northward ecotone movement in response to predicted Arctic climate warming in this highly sensitive region.  相似文献

Diatom concentrations in surface sediments are positively correlated with limnetic chlorophyll a concentrations in Florida (USA) lakes. Using this relationship, I examine models that provide quantitative inferences for trophic state in historical applications. The best model predicts chlorophyll a trophic state index (TSI) values from log-transformed diatom concentrations and explains approximately half the variance in the dependent variable. Diatom accumulation rates are not better than sedimentary diatom concentrations as predictors of TSI. The entire diatom assemblage is as sensitive an indicator of TSI as are the planktonic diatoms alone. A model that considers the ecological preferences of specific taxa was found to be a better predictor than the model based on total diatom concentration. The sedimentary diatom concentration model provides a useful method for assessing historical changes in primary productivity, except in lakes where factors (e.g., silica limitation, blue-green bacterial inhibition) limited diatom production, or post-depositional changes removed sedimentary diatoms. TSI inferences are presented for sediment cores from two Florida lakes, one of which demonstrates a problematic application, and the other of which does not.  相似文献

We explored statistical relationships between the composition of littoral diatom assemblages and 21 chemical and physical environmental variables in 69 lakes and 15 river sites in the lowland of northeastern Germany. Canonical correspondence analysis with single treatment and with forward selection of environmental variables was used to detect 11 important ecological variables (dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC], Na + , total phosphorus [TP], dissolved organic carbon [DOC], total nitrogen [TN], pH, oxygen saturation, dissolved iron, SO42 ? , NH4 + , soluble reactive silicium) and maximum water depth or Ca2 + or soluble reactive phosphorus that most independently explain major proportions of the total diatom variance among the habitats. Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that each contributed a significant additional proportion (P < 0.05) of the variance in species composition. Together, these 11 most important environmental variables explained 34% of the total variance in species composition among the sites and captured 73% of the explained variance from the full 21 parameters model. Weighted‐averaging regression and calibration of 304 indicator taxa with tolerance down‐weighting and classic deshrinking was used to develop transfer functions between littoral diatoms and DIC, pH, TP, TN, and Cl ? . The DOC:TP ratio was introduced and a weighted‐averaging model was developed to infer allochthonous DOC effects in freshwater ecosystems. This diatom‐DOC/TP model was significant (P < 0.001) and explained 7.6% of the total diatom variance among the sites, surpassing the inferential power of the diatom‐TP‐transfer function (7.3% explained variance). The root‐mean‐square errors of prediction of the models were estimated by jack‐knifing and were comparable with published data sets from surface sediment diatom samples. The data set of littoral diatoms and environmental variables allows use of the diatom‐environmental transfer functions in biomonitoring and paleolimnological approaches across a broad array of natural water resources (such as floodplains, flushed lakes, estuaries, shallow lakes) in the central European lowland ecoregion.  相似文献

Freshwater diatom biogeography in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
Aim Document the biogeographical distributions of diatoms in the Canadian Arctic in relation to environmental factors. Location The Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Methods Diatoms were extracted from lake sediments and treated using standard methods. Rarefaction‐estimated species richness, diatom concentrations (valves cc?1), and diatom abundance were mapped using a Geographic Information System. The physical and chemical parameters of the lakes were measured. Results A total of 326 taxa from 63 genera were found in 62 lakes of the study area. Up to 85 and as low as eight taxa were identified in any one lake, and rarefaction‐estimated species richness correlated with lake size. Nearby lakes could have greatly different diatom assemblages. Many taxa showed limited distributions. Response surfaces and ordination techniques indicate that a large number of taxa prefer colder regions of the Arctic while the abundance of others was influenced by lake water chemical parameters such as TKN and SiO2. Main conclusions Although many taxa were common and found across the study area, diatom assemblages showed regional differences in the Arctic. Some taxa were not found in either the northern or southern parts of the Archipelago and others were restricted to particular regions. Newly delineated genera showed interpretable geographical patterns and could be related to environmental factors, suggesting that this more natural grouping may enhance our understanding of diatom ecology. Geographical, physical, and chemical factors are needed to explain diatom distributions in the Arctic.  相似文献

The effects of shade on benthic calcareous periphyton were tested in a short-hydroperiod oligotrophic subtropical wetland (freshwater Everglades). The experiment was a split-plot design set in three sites with similar environmental characteristics. At each site, eight randomly selected 1-m2 areas were isolated individually in a shade house, which did not spectrally change the incident irradiance but reduced it quantitatively by 0, 30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 98%. Periphyton mat was sampled monthly under each shade house for a 5 month period while the wetland was flooded. Periphyton was analyzed for thickness, DW, AFDW, chlorophyll a (chl a) and incubated in light and dark BOD bottles at five different irradiances to assess its photosynthesis–irradiance (PI) curve and respiration. The PI curves parameters P max, I k and eventually the photoinhibition slope (β) were determined following non-linear regression analyses. Taxonomic composition and total algal biovolume were determined at the end of the experiment. The periphyton composition did not change with shade but the PI curves were significantly affected by it. I k increased linearly with increasing percent irradiance transmittance (%IT = 1−%shade). P max could be fitted with a PI curve equation as it increased with %IT and leveled off after 10%IT. For each shade level, the PI curve was used to integrate daily photosynthesis for a day of average irradiance. The daily photosynthesis followed a PI curve equation with the same characteristics as P max vs. %IT. Thus, periphyton exhibited a high irradiance plasticity under 0–80% shade but could not keep up the same photosynthetic level at higher shade, causing a decrease in daily GPP at 98% shade levels. The plasticity was linked to an increase in the chl a content per cell in the 60–80% shade, while this increase was not observed at lower shade likely because it was too demanding energetically. Thus, chl a is not a good metric for periphyton biomass assessment across variously shaded habitats. It is also hypothesized that irradiance plasticity is linked to photosynthetic coupling between differently comprised algal layers arranged vertically within periphyton mats that have different PI curves.  相似文献

Fossil cladoceran remains preserved in surface sediment samples from 44 oligotrophic lakes in south-central Ontario were examined to evaluate the relationships between species assemblages and measured environmental variables. Differences in cladoceran assemblages were related to physical and chemical variables using multivariate techniques. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) identified five environmental variables as significantly influencing assemblage composition: sulphate (SO42−), calcium (Ca2+), pH, maximum lake depth (Z max) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC). There was a distinct separation of lakes and taxa along the ion gradient based on SO4, Ca and pH. Additionally, cladoceran communities in coloured, shallow lakes had relatively higher abundances of littoral chydorid species and the pelagic taxa Holopedium spp., and the Daphnia pulex complex. Deep, clear lakes had relatively higher abundances of other pelagic taxa. Predation by fish (measured as presence–absence) and Chaoborus (measured as density) were less significant than some of the physico-chemical variables in influencing cladoceran assemblage structure. However, this could be due to the limited resolution of the predation data that was available at the time of this study. The distribution of cladocerans in the surface sediment, and their relation to these important environmental variables, suggests that there is considerable potential for the use of sedimentary cladoceran remains as environmental indicators in south-central Ontario lakes. Limnological gradients of small, oligotrophic, and low conductance lakes in northern New England were defined by principal components analysis; relationships of sedimented diatom species to the gradients were investigated by correlation analysis. Diatom distributions were most strongly related to the gradient of pH and alkalinity and the covarying variables, conductance, Mg, Ca, total Al, and exchangeable Al. Weaker relationships to lake morphology, dissolved organic carbon and water color, altitude and marine aerosol inputs, and the distinctive water chemistry of some New Hampshire lakes were also present. Results for 16 taxa of importance in our studies of lake acidity are given in detail and are compared to results from other regions of eastern North America. Planktonic taxa were absent below pH 5.5, with the exception of the long form of Asterionella ralfsii var. americana Korn. The two forms of this taxon differed ecologically: the long form (>45μm) had an abundance weighted mean (AWM) pH 4.90 and occurred mostly in lakes that were deep relative to transparency; the short form (<45μm)had an AWM pH and occurred on lakes that were shallow relative to transparency. The ecological advantage of a “splitter” approach to diatom taxonomy was demonstrated by examination of other taxa as well, including Tabellaria flocculosa (Roth) Kütz. These results have important implications for paleolimnological interpretations.  相似文献

Diatoms were identified and enumerated from the surface sediments of 65 lakes located on the Cariboo and Chilcotin Plateaux (British Columbia, Canada). These lakes span a large gradient in lakewater ionic concentration (fresh through hypersaline) and composition, as well as other physical/chemical variables. Almost all of the study lakes had higher salinities in the late-summer than in the spring. The lakes with spring salinities >8 g l–1 showed the largest seasonal increases in salinity. Ionic composition was similar in the spring and late-summer for most lakes. Both ionic concentration (i.e. salinity) and composition were important environmental variables that could account for the different diatom floras in the lakes. Diatom assemblages characteristic of carbonate-dominated and sulfate-dominated waters were identified. Other variables such as water depth and phosphorus concentration were also important. The majority (87%) of diatom taxa had estimated salinity optima < 3 g l–1 Halophilic diatom taxa had broader tolerances to salinity when compared to the fresh water taxa, however taxa with narrow and broad tolerances could be identified across the salinity gradient. Species diversity was weakly but significantly correlated to lakewater salinity (r 2 = 0.18 to 0.3, P < 0.05).Salinity inference models were developed based on the relationship between the diatom assemblages and the spring, late-summer and average salinity. The correlations between the measured and diatominferred salinity, based on the spring (r = 0.95), late-summer (r = 0.94) and average (r = 0.95) salinity data, are high because there was an extremely strong correlation (r = 0.98) between the log transformed spring and late-summer measured salinities. These salinity reconstruction models provide a tool that can be used to infer past climatic changes as part of paleolimnological studies from appropriate closed-basin lakes in British Columbia.  相似文献

Fossil diatom assemblages from the sediment/water interface in 105 Minnesota lakes were compared with measurements of alkalinity, sulphate, total phosphorus, transparency, and water depth at the sample site. Similar assemblages were placed together using cluster analysis and comparisons of environmental variables between diatom clusters were made using an analysis of variance. Total alkalinity and transparency showed the greatest difference among clusters. Samples from shallow eutrophic prairie lakes were dominated by Melosira granulata, Stephanodiscus niagarae and, occasionally, by Stephanodiscus hantzschii. Deep oligotrophic lakes had modest percentages of Cyclotella comta. Dilute acid lakes were dominated either by Melosira distans and M. italica or by Tabellaria fenestrata, Cyclotella stelligera, and in some cases C. glomerata. Assemblages with Cyclotella glomerata and Synedra nana were found in naturally meromictic lakes. Stephanodiscus hantzschii showed a preference for extremely eutrophic lakes. The relationships between recently deposited diatom assemblages and the lake environmental conditions studied here can be used to evaluate the extent of past environmental change in lakes.  相似文献

Use of diatoms in monitoring water quality is well acknowledged in developed countries, but only recently has the assessment started gaining importance in developing countries. Diatoms can be obtained from natural and artificial substrates. Appreciating the differences and similarities of diatom assemblages on both substrates may contribute to a better understanding and standardization particularly during monitoring of water quality. During this study we assessed diatom assemblages, biodiversity and trophic indices in relation to water quality along the Nairobi River. Fifteen sites were sampled in September 2000 during the dry season. Diatoms were collected from natural substrates (stones, pebbles) and artificial substrates (100% acrylic wool). On artificial and natural substrates, a total of 190 and 151 taxa were found, respectively, the majority of these taxa (80%) have cosmopolitan distribution and are also widespread throughout tropical African. Species composition changed downstream, five taxa dominated upper and mid stream sites whereas lower stream sites were dominated by one or two taxa. Species richness, diversity, dominance and evenness were positively correlated with NO3, O2 and altitude but decreased markedly downstream with a simultaneous increase in total dissolved solids, alkalinity, chemical oxygen demand and PO4. Ordination and classification (CANOCO and TWINSPAN) showed that diatom assemblages in the Nairobi River responded strongly to water quality changes with respect to concentrations of NO3, NO2, total dissolved solids and temperature. Taxa common at less impacted upstream sites included Gomphonema gracilis, Anomoeoneis brachysira and Fragilaria biceps; while common taxa at midstream sites with agricultural catchments were Gomphonema parvulum, Navicula cryptocephala, N. schroeteri, N. bryophila, N. halophila, Nitzschia linearis var. linearis and Cymbella silesica. Achnanthes minutissima var. saprophila, Gomphonema angustum, Navicula subminuscula, N. arvensis, Nitzschia palea and N. umbonata were most common at urban sites, which were polluted by residential and industrial effluents. Trophic diatom indices suggested that water quality was poor at most sites in the Nairobi River. Most sites along the river had low Generic Diatom Index values, GDI (<12) and high Trophic Diatom Index values, TDI 73–78 (median = 76) and 75–84 (median = 77) for artificial and natural substrates, respectively. This study showed that diatoms' response on natural and artificial substrates were similar and reflected environmental conditions correctly.  相似文献

This paper offers a synoptic account of studies on the phytoplankton communities in the deep southern subalpine lakes (DSL) Garda, Iseo, Como, Lugano and Maggiore. The main cause of the degradation of the water quality in the DSL is eutrophication. The euphotic layers of these lakes are trophically different, ranging from the oligo-mesotrophy of lakes Maggiore and Garda to the meso-eutrophy of lakes Iseo and Lugano. The trophic status as estimated by using total phosphorus and chlorophyll a has provided consistent results in agreement with the models proposed by OECD (1982. Eutrophication of Waters. Monitoring, Assessment and Control, OECD, Paris). Though related with chlorophyll a and TP, the Secchi disk depths have significantly underestimated the trophic status of the DSL. Two trophic indices using the algal orders (PTIorders) and species (PTIspecies) were drawn up on the basis of the distribution of phytoplankton along a trophic gradient defined by the application of multivariate methods; the scores emerging from these indices were used to make a definitive ecological classification of water bodies on a scale from 1 to 5, in accordance with the Water Framework Directive. A third index (PTIOE) was computed as the ratio between the annual mean values of the cumulative biovolumes of two groups of algal orders with opposite trophic characteristics. The three PTI indices were highly correlated, providing a consistent classification of the water bodies. The indices proposed in this work were specifically adopted for use in the DSL. However, the criteria for their implementation constitute a robust and impartial tool for assessing similar indices in other lake typologies and for evaluating the degree of specificity of the trophic indicator values assigned to the single phytoplankton orders and species.  相似文献

1. To examine how the vertical distribution of periphytic biomass and primary production in the upper 0–1 m of the water column changes along an inter‐lake eutrophication gradient, artificial substrata (plastic strips) were introduced into the littoral zones of 13 lakes covering a total phosphorus (TP) summer mean range from 11 to 536 μg L?1. Periphyton was measured in July (after 8 weeks) and September (after 15 weeks) at three water depths (0.1, 0.5 and 0.9 m). 2. Periphyton chlorophyll a concentration and dry weight generally increased with time and the communities became more heterotrophic. Mean periphytic biomass was unimodally related to TP, reaching a peak between 60 and 200 μg L?1. 3. The proportion of diatoms in the periphyton decreased from July to September. A taxonomic shift occurred from dominance (by biovolume) of diatoms and cyanobacteria at low TP to dominance of chlorophytes at intermediate TP and of diatoms (Epithemia sp.) in the two most TP‐rich lakes. 4. The grazer community in most lakes was dominated by chironomid larvae and the total biomass of grazers increased with periphyton biomass. 5. Community respiration (R), maximum light‐saturated photosynthetic rate (Pmax), primary production and the biomass of macrograzers associated with periphyton were more closely related to periphyton biomass than to TP. Biomass‐specific rates of R, Pmax and production declined with increasing biomass. 6. Mean net periphyton production (24 h) was positive in most lakes in July and negative in all lakes in September. Net production was not related to the TP gradient in July, but decreased in September with increasing TP. 7. The results indicate that nutrient concentrations alone are poor predictors of the standing biomass and production of periphyton in shallow lakes. However, because periphyton biomass reaches a peak in the range of phosphorus concentration in which alternative states occur in shallow lakes, recolonisation by submerged macrophytes after nutrient reduction may potentially be suppressed by periphyton growth.  相似文献

Chironomid assemblages in thirty-three mountain lakes situated above tree line in the Slovakian part of the Tatra Mountains were studied during 2000–2002. Chironomid species/taxa, collected as pupal exuviae, were correlated with physical, chemical, and lake morphometry variables of 22 lakes. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used to classify the lakes into four distinct groups: higher situated alpine lakes, lower situated alpine lakes, subalpine lakes and acidified lakes. Presence/absence of eight taxa was identified as indicative for this classification. In discriminant function analysis, pH, dissolved organic carbon, altitude and lake area were the most significant variables reflecting differences among groups of lakes. This model of four variables allowed 77% success in the prediction of group membership. A multiple regression model with lake area, concentration of magnesium and total phosphorus accounted for 37% of the variance in taxa richness. Lakes with greater area contained more chironomid taxa than smaller ones. Lakes with higher alkalinity and higher trophic status tend to support more taxa. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that most variation in the composition of chironomid assemblages was related to pH and to altitude. The results can be used as reference data for long-term monitoring of the Tatra lakes, especially in connection with a recovery from acidification and global climatic change.  相似文献

Diatom assemblages were analysed in the surface sediments of 44 alkaline lakes in south-western Ontario, Canada, and combined with a pre-existing 58 south-eastern Ontario lake set: (1) to determine if shallow, polymictic Ontario lakes contain different diatom assemblages from deeper, dimictic lakes, and if so, which environmental variables most influence assemblages; (2) to improve the existing transfer functions; (3) to construct and compare transfer functions separately for dimictic, deep lakes and for polymictic, shallow lakes. Polymictic and dimictic lakes covered a similar nutrient range (spring total phosphorus (TP)=4–54 g/l, spring total nitrogen (TN)=200–927 g/l; n=101) and spring pH levels (7.6–9; n=101). However, polymictic lakes were shallower (median mean depth = 2.9 m vs. 7.3 m in dimictic lakes). Benthic diatoms (average 60% relative abundance) dominated the polymictic lakes, whereas planktonic diatoms (average 60%) dominated dimictic lakes. A Canonical Correspondence Analyses with forward selection (p < 0.05, 999 Monte Carlo permutations) identified TP, alkalinity, watershed to volume ratios and lake depth as the most important measured environmental variables influencing diatom distribution in both polymictic and dimictic lakes. Additionally, pH was identified as an important variable in polymictic lakes, whereas TN was also forward selected in the dimictic lakes. Adding more lakes to the original southern Ontario calibration set improved the TN transfer function (r2 jack=0.42, root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP)jack=0.11 [log g TN/l]), although there was a high systematic error in the revised model (r2 residual = 0.48). However, the strongest TP model was derived from the polymictic lakes (r2 boot =0.44, RMSEPboot=0.20 [log g TP/l]), which was the smallest lake set (n=30) with the lowest number of diatom species. The stronger TP model from the polymictic lakes may be partly due to the relatively low macrophyte cover in our polymictic lakes, which may lead to stronger benthic–pelagic coupling than in lakes with large macrophyte populations. Additionally, our study suggests that the Chrysophyceae cyst:diatom frustule ratio may be useful for indicating trends in TP levels of 35 g/l in alkaline lakes that are dimictic, but is not necessarily indicative of trophic state changes in shallow, polymictic lakes. Our study demonstrates that it may be important to construct separate diatom-based nutrient transfer functions for polymictic and dimictic lakes.  相似文献

A biological survey was carried out in 640 stations spread over the Loire-Bretagne National Network (France) between 1996 and 2000. Epilithic diatom inventories were obtained following standard methods. A total of 934 diatom taxa were identified. Common diversity indices (species richness, Shannon’s diversity, equitability, dominance, etc.) were calculated and compared against abiotic factors verify their reliability as biomonitoring metrics. Sampling stations were classified according to their trophic status (TP concentration). Several theoretical predictions about the relationship between community structural parameters and limnological variables were tested. In general, diversity indices exhibited poor linear correlations with environmental factors indicating ecological status. No clear patterns were found concerning species accumulation curves, occurrence-abundance, frequency-abundance and frequency distribution of diatom taxa between different trophic levels, although assemblages from stations with lower TP levels were characterized by relatively high dominances of certain taxa, mainly Achnanthidium minutissimum. In the light of these findings, the use of diatom diversity indices in biological quality surveillance protocols in continental waters is discouraged. Results are compared and discussed with similar studies.  相似文献

1. Surface sediment samples of subfossil chironomid head capsules from 47 lakes in southern West Greenland were analysed using multivariate numerical methods in order to explore the relationship between chironomid assemblages and selected environmental variables. The study lakes are located along a climate gradient ranging from coastal maritime conditions near the Davis Strait to a continental climate near the margin of the Greenland ice sheet. 2. High‐resolution surface water temperatures were measured through the summer season using automatic data loggers in 21 of the study lakes. The mean July surface water temperature (1999) ranged from 7.3 to 16.5 °C in the data set. 3. In all lakes, a total of 24 chironomid taxa were recorded; Micropsectra, Psectrocladius, Chironomus and Procladius were the dominant genera. There was a strong correlation between the trophic variables [total nitrogen and total phosphorus (TN, TP)] and temperature, and in redundancy analysis (RDA) the three variables explained almost equal significant amounts of variation in the chironomid data (19.8–22.3%). However, temperature lost significant explanatory power when the effect of TN was partialled out in RDA. 4. The lakes were classified using two‐way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN ) into eight groups defined by temperature, trophic variables, salinity (conductivity) and lake‐morphometric data. Fourteen chironomid taxa showed significant differences in percentage abundances among groups, with Heterotrissocladius, Micropsectra, Ablabesmyia and Chironomus as the most robust group‐indicator taxa. Forward selection of taxa in multiple discriminant analysis was used to fit chironomid assemblages into lake groups. Using only eight taxa, 95% of lakes were correctly classified at a second TWINSPAN division level (four groups) and 85% of lakes at a third division level (eight groups). 5. This study showed that there is considerable potential in using subfossil chironomid head capsules as paleoenvironmental indicators in both short‐ and long‐term (down‐core) studies of lake ontogeny and palaeoclimate conditions in West Greenland. However, because of the strong correlation between temperature and trophic variables, a quantitative reconstruction of lake‐ and habitat‐type is recommended, in combination with direct reconstruction of single variables such as temperature.  相似文献

The effects of urban pollution from Hanoi city on the benthic diatom communities of the Nhue–Tolich river system were studied during the 2003 dry season. Benthic diatoms were allowed to grow on glass slides suspended in the water flow for 4 weeks. To reveal the relationship between water quality and diatom communities, Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used on data concerning relative abundances of diatom species and environmental variables. Two diatom indices, IPS and DAIpo, were applied to evaluate water quality in the three rivers. A total of 291 diatom taxa were found in the Red, Nhue and Tolich Rivers. These were mainly cosmopolitan taxa, with some tropical, subtropical and endemic taxa. The most abundant taxa at the Red site were Aulacoseira granulata, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema minutum, Navicula recens and other halophilous taxa such as Nitzschia kurzii, Seminavis strigosa, Entomoneis paludosa, Bacillaria paradoxa. Diatom assemblages at the Tolich site consisted mainly of Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea and Eolimna minima. Diatom density ranged from 660 to 30,000 cells/cm2. Environmental variables and diatom assemblage composition at all sites were significantly correlated. Two diatom indices gave similar results and indicate the Tolich River with the lowest values as a highly polluted site.  相似文献
