A putative natural hybrid betweenOrchis laxiflora andO. morio (Orchidaceae) from southern Italy, formerly known asO. alata, was characterized both on morphological and molecular grounds in order to confirm its hybrid status and to trace its maternal lineage. The morphological characters of the putative hybrid showed intermediacy between those of the parent species, and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis of a region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA confirmed its hybrid origin. Chloroplast DNA RFLP analysis indicated thatO. morio provided the maternal genome.  相似文献

Natural hybridisation between the taxa from Pinus mugo complex and P. sylvestris was postulated in several sympatric populations of the species in Europe. However, due to the absence of precise methods for identification of hybrid seeds and hybrid trees, the frequency of hybridisation and its influence on the genetic structure of relict P. mugo populations has not been clarified so far. In the present study, the species-specific chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) marker and isozymes were applied to test the hybridisation hypothesis in a postulated hybrid swarm population of the species from “Bór na Czerwonem” reserve at the northern foothills of Tatra Mts., Poland. The cpDNA marker was used to identify hybrids within two groups of polycormic (multi-stemmed) and monocormic (single-stemmed) pines from this population. Allelic frequencies at isozyme loci from both groups were compared to frequencies found in allopatric populations of the species. Additionally, cpDNA haplotypes of seedlings derived from open pollinated seeds were studied to detect the possibility of successful cross-pollination. The mixture of seedlings with P. sylvestris and P. mugo cpDNA haplotypes was derived from one parental tree that indicates hybridisation. However, all the mature polycormic pines had cpDNA haplotypes species specific to P. mugo and the isozyme frequencies were similar to frequencies found in three allopatric populations of P. mugo from Tatra Mts. (mean genetic distance, Dn=.027). The differences were much larger in comparisons with monocormic pines from this area (Dn=.085) and two P. sylvestris samples from distant allopatric populations (Dn=.077). Nearly all monocormic pines had cpDNA species specific to P. sylvestris and isozyme frequencies similar to other populations of this species (mean Dn=.004). Only one P. sylvestris-like monocormic tree had cpDNA of P. mugo and can be considered as a hybrid. The results do not provide evidence supporting the hybrid swarm hypothesis. Rather, the results suggest that mature hybrids have a low frequency within this population and (rare) hybridisation is not reciprocal but unidirectional with P. mugo as pollen donor.  相似文献

A plant collected in South Africa in the early 1960's has been considered an intergeneric hybrid with the parental taxa beingRuspolia hypocrateriformis (Vahl)Milne-Redhead var.australis Milne-Redhead andRuttya ovata Harv. The intermediate morphology of the plant provided the strongest evidence of its hybrid origin. The natural hybrid, named formally as ×Ruttyruspolia A. Meeuse & de Wet, is highly sterile. Crosses between the two presumed parental taxa produced two plants that are very similar to the putative natural hybrid. We had examined the presumed parental species and the natural and artificial hybrids using enzyme electrophoresis. The two parental species are highly differentiated at genes specifying soluble enzymes; they have a genetic identity of 0.51. They have no common alleles at two genes, and contain alternative alleles in very different frequencies at two loci.Ruttya andRuspolia exhibit both unique and common alleles at two additional genes. The natural and artificially produced plants of ×Ruttyruspolia are identical electrophoretically and contain alleles unique to each of the parental species at two genes. In addition, individuals of ×Ruttyruspolia combine alternative high frequency alleles from each parent at two loci. Allozymes provide strong confirming evidence for the hybrid origin of naturally occurring ×Ruttyruspolia because the products of specific alleles either unique to or highly characteristic of the two putative parental taxa are found combined in ×Ruttyruspolia.  相似文献

The detection of hybridity inLeucaena is discussed in relation to: (i) traditional criteria, (ii) molecular criteria and (iii) models to predict hybrid leaf morphology. Morphological, geographical and molecular evidence for the occurrence of interspecific hybrids betweenL. leucocephala andL. diversifolia in south-central Mexico, northern Guatemala, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, the Philippines and Papua New Guinea is presented. Predicted mean hybrid leaf trait values calculated from parent material are compared with data from putative hybrids and shown to be similar. The origin of these hybrids is discussed and shown to be the result of artificial sympatry resulting from indigenous, and recent exotic, domestication of the parent species. The hybrid is described asL. ×spontanea.  相似文献

Approximately one-fourth of the more than 900 world-wide distributed Salvia species (Lamiaceae) is ornithophilous. With few exceptions they occur in the New World, being predominantly pollinated by hummingbirds. In the Old World only Salvia africana-lutea and the recently described Salvia thermarum, both from the Cape Province of South Africa, were observed to be pollinated by sunbirds and white-eyes. Among the 23 South African Salvia species Salvia lanceolata is a further candidate for being bird pollinated. For the first time we describe and illustrate its pollination by Nectarinia chalybea and Zosterops pallidus. We compare the ornithophilous syndrome of the three mentioned Salvia species and relate them to the morphological fitting of the most common nectarivorous birds of the Southwestern Cape (Cape peninsula to Worcester). We conclude that each of the birds could act as a pollinator and that the three co-occurring Salvia species are not mechanically isolated from each other. The degree of specialisation towards bird pollination, possible hybridisation events and evolution of bird pollination in South African Salvia species are discussed.  相似文献

We report on the second case of a reed warbler × great reed warbler hybrid (Acrocephalus scirpaceus and A. arundinaceus). The bird was captured during a standardised ringing session in Belgium in autumn 1999, and fell between the parental species in all measurements. Molecular analyses of two microsatellite loci verified that the bird was a female that had a reed warbler father and a great reed warbler mother.  相似文献

An experimental crossing program was carried out in order to test the hypothesis thatArmeria villosa subsp.carratracensis, a serpentine endemic from Southern Spain, is of hybrid origin. Fruit-set and mainly pollen stainability data in artificial hybrids demonstrate that internal interspecific barriers are weak. Two generations of backcrossing with the two putative parents —A. colorata andA. villosa subsp.longiaristata— can restore pollen stainability to an average of 83.2 and 68.7, respectively. A morphometric analysis of 148 specimens belonging to parental species, different artificial hybrid generations and wild putative hybrid race shows that (1) morphological characters have a strong genetic basis and thus are good markers in identifying hybrids and introgression inArmeria; (2) artificial backcrossing produces in morphometrical characters a variation which conforms in both trend and magnitude to what is commonly attributed in the wild to introgression; (3) the position of the putative hybrid race is intermediate between the two parental species used in the program. These results are in accordance with the hypothesis of hybrid origin ofA. villosa subsp.carratracensis. Natural and experimental hybridization inArmeria, I  相似文献

This review highlights evolutionary processes in the Brassicaceae which cause, accompany or are a consequence of biological invasions. Case studies in Capsella and Diplotaxis address the genetics of colonising species. The greatest colonising ability in Capsella bursa-pastoris is associated with polyploidy, predominant selfing, and high genetic diversity. Success of colonial populations seems to be due to the introduction of preadapted genotypes. Colonising species in Diplotaxis reveal contrasting evolutionary patterns. Genetic attributes in D. muralis include annuality, polyploidy, and predominant selfing. Very different from Capsella, D. muralis is nearly devoid of genetic diversity as revealed by molecular markers. In contrast to D. muralis, the colonising D. tenuifolia is perennial, diploid, self-incompatible, and displays high genetic diversity. Hybrid speciation, establishment of the hybrids in man-made habitats, stabilisation of their reproductive system, and reproductive isolation from the parent populations were analysed in Cardamine. The Nasturtium example highlights the importance of hybridisation for the evolution of invasiveness. The last case study concentrates on the evolutionary consequences of hybridisation between native and invading Rorippa species. Introgressive hybridisation between the invasive Rorippa austriaca and native Rorippa species is common and widespread in central Europe, and interspecific gene transfer has led to the formation of a new invasive genotype. Each successful invasion presents new aspects and sound case studies are needed in order to understand the ecology and evolution of the colonisation process and to enable us to assess the evolutionary consequences of biological invasions. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary Somatic hybrid plants regenerated following the fusion of leaf mesophyll protoplasts of Petunia parodii with those isolated from a cell suspension of albino P. inflata. These two species exhibit a unilateral cross-incompatability with a pre-zygotic mode of reproductive isolation preventing hybridizations with P. inflata as the maternal parent. Selection of somatic hybrids relied on the fact that unfused or homokaryon protoplasts of P. parodii did not develop beyond the cell colony stage while those of the putative somatic hybrids and albino P. inflata parent produced callus. Green somatic hybrid calluses were readily identified against the white background of P. inflata following complementation to chlorophyll synthesis proficiency and continued growth in hybrid cells. Shoots, and ultimately flowering plants, were identified as somatic hybrids based on their floral morphology and colour, chromosome number and the fact that they segregated for parental characters. The frequency of somatic hybrid production was comparable to that previously established for two sexually compatible Petunia species.  相似文献

Summary Intergeneric hybrids between Moricandia arvensis (C3–C4 intermediate species) and Brassica A and B genome species (B. campestris and B. nigra) were produced via ovary culture. When M. arvensis was used as a female parent, the hybrid embryo yield (0.25–0.45 embryo per pollination) was similar between two genomes, regardless of the male parent. The reciprocal hybrid using B. campestris as a female was also obtained, although yield of embryo was lower (0.02 embryo per pollination). On the other hand, no hybrids were obtained without the in vitro technique. As most hybrid embryos could not develop normal shoots, plants were regenerated by inducing shoots on the cultured hypocotyl. The hybrid nature of the regenerated plant was confirmed morphologically and cytogenetically. A certain amount of bivalents (2.52-2.71) in the hybrids indicated the existence of partial chromosome homology between two genera. The present results indicate that ovary culture is an effective technique for overcoming the crossing barrier between M. arvensis and Brassica cultivated species.  相似文献

Sixty-three artificial floating islands (rafts) were sited at Black-throated Diver Gavia arctica territories in Scotland, the majority during 1992–95. Rafts were mainly 2.4 m × 3.6 m platforms made of polystyrene blocks on a wooden frame, covered with growing turf. Rafts were sited at lochs (lakes) where breeding success was low and/or nests had been flooded. Territory occupancy, nest site and breeding success were monitored at territories with and without rafts during 1980–97. Rafts were used at least once at 44 territories, representing about one-quarter of the national population. Most rafts were used for the first time in the first or second year of provision. At territories where they were used, rafts improved chick productivity by a factor of 2.7 (95% confidence limits: 1.3–6.2). Raft provision probably improved the chick production of the Scottish Black-throated Diver population by 44% (7–130%).  相似文献

A few individuals with intermediate morphology always appeared in the sympatric distributions of Gentiana straminea and G. siphonantha. These intermediate individuals were hypothesized to be the hybrids of two species after a careful evaluation of their morphological characteristics. To test this hypothesis, sequence comparison of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal and trnS (GCU)-trnG (UCC) intergenic spacer region of the chloroplast DNA from Gentiana straminea, G. siphonantha and the putative hybrids was performed. The results suggest that most intermediate individuals were the natural hybrids between G. straminea and G. siphonantha. In addition, we examined the sequence variation among the individuals of both parent species and analyzed the possibility leading to the incongruent identification in some individuals based on morphologic and molecular evidences, respectively. The intraspecific diversification of DNA fragments within both parent species and their high variability in hybrid swarms probably resulted from chloroplast genome recombination and incomplete lineage sorting during the early stages of speciation origin of the parent species. __________ Translated from Acta Botanica Yunnanica, 2007, 29 (1): 91–97 [译自:云南植物研究]  相似文献

We have used cDNA clones as probes on Southern blots to detect restriction fragment length polymorphisms among sevenCeratopteris thalictroides accessions, threeC. richardii accessions, and one putative interspecific hybrid. We found that the stringency of post-hybridization washes was a critical parameter affecting the quality of our blots; even with homologous cDNA sequences low stringency conditions resulted in a smear of signal, but high stringency washes gave blots with distinct bands. Most probes showed hybridization with four or more genomic fragments. Similarities in the number and size of fragments between and within species indicated that (i)C. richardii shows limited polymorphism among accessions tested, (ii)C. thalictroides is highly polymorphic, and (iii) Hawaiian accessions ofC. thalictroides are divergent relative to their continental cohorts and among themselves. The putative interspecific hybrid did not group closely with either of these species.  相似文献

In southwest Sweden, the two species of loon, Gavia stellata and G. arctica, have shown different trends in population size and production of young during the last decades. Both species fish in oligotrophic freshwaters, susceptible to acidification. The number of breeding sites occupied by G. stellata has been reduced by almost 50% during the last 40–50 years. For G. arctica, there are no indications of significant declines in population size or reproductive success during the last 20 years. The different trends in numbers and production of young might reflect different susceptibility to the ecological changes in acidified lakes. G. stellata prefer fishing lakes with high abundance of Acerina cernua and salmonid and cyprinid fish, such as Coregonus albula and Rutilus rutilus. They also feed their prefledged chicks almost entirely on cyprinid and salmonid fish. G. arctica prefer fishing lakes with high transparency and, when feeding in groups, high abundance of Perca fluviatilis. Their young can be fed on aquatic insects as a supplement to the fish diet. Thus, G. stellata to a higher degree than G. arctica relies on fish which are susceptible to low pH, and G. arctica may also benefit from the increased abundance of aquatic insects in lakes with reduced predation from fish. Furthermore, high water transparency is important for the selection of lakes by G. arctica but not by G. stellata. In G. stellata, high contents of mercury in eggs can be related to the intake of fish in lakes affected by acidification.  相似文献

Based on the presence of intermediate morphological characters, such as serrated leaf margins and flower structures,Ilex x wandoensis was initially described as a putative natural hybrid betweenI. cornuta andI. Integra, and was formally described as a new hybrid species,I. x wandoensis C. F. Mill., and M. Kim. However, using molecular markers generated via random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), we have now discovered hybridization in populations of theI. x wandoensis complex collected from Wando and Jeju Islands, Korea. Marker bands of the putative parent taxa also were found in some populations ofI. x wandoensis, confirming its hybrid origin. Morphological variability within and among those populations was confirmed by model-based clustering methods, using multilocus genotype data. Phenograms generated from RAPD bands indicated that some accessions ofI. x wandoensis clustered with one of the parental species. This implied the occurrence of hybridization and recurring backcrosses of the hybrid to both parents, resulting in various hybrid derivatives because of the segregation and recombination of traits.Ilex x wandoensis was more closely related toI. cornuta than toI. integra suggesting that it backcrossed more with the former than with the latter.  相似文献

Pelargonium incarnatum is a tetraploid species (2n = 40) andP. patulum is diploid (2n = 22). A natural hybrid, collected at the same locality as the parent species, has 2n = 42 chromosomes. The meiosis of the hybrid is practically normal and its pollen fertility corresponds to that ofP. incarnatum. The flavonoid patterns of the parent species and the hybrid are very similar. The origin and phylogenetic implications of this intersectional hybrid are discussed.  相似文献

The natural hybridization that occurs between two sympatric species of Rhododendron subgenus Hymenanthes in Yunnan, China, was investigated. The assumed parents, Rhododendron delavayi Franch. and R. decorum Franch., are morphologically distinct, and the putative hybrid species, R. agastum Balf. f. et W. W. Smith, has an intermediate morphology. We used the main morphological characters, sequences of the nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS region, and the chloroplast DNA trnL-F intronspacer to analyze the three species, and compared these morphological and molecular data with an artificial hybrid between R. decorum (♀) × R. delavayi (♂). From the results, we conclude that R. agastum is a natural hybrid between a female R. delavayi and a male R. decorum.  相似文献

Reticulate hybridization is a complicated and creative mechanism in plant evolution that can cause interference in phylogenetic studies. Based on observations of intermediate morphology, low pollen fertility, and overlapping distributions of putative parent species, Yang and Wang (Proceedings of the cross-strait symposium on floristic diversity and conservation. National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung, Taiwan, pp 183–197, 1998) first proposed reticulate hybridization of Alpinia in Taiwan. In the present study, molecular tools were used to explore relationships between four parental species and their homoploidy hybrids, and the impact of hybridization on phylogeny reconstruction. Based on DNA markers, maternal heritance of the chloroplast genome, and additivity of nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer, the present results provide strong support for the hybridization hypothesis. Co-existence of parental ribotypes within hybrids revealed that these hybridization events were current, while reciprocal and introgressive hybridization were inferred from chloroplast DNA data. Furthermore, iterative hybridizations involving more than two parental species may occur in notorious hybrid zones. Ecological, phenological, and physiological evidence provides insight into why such frequent hybridization occurs in Taiwanese Alpinia. In the phylogenetic tree of the Zerumbet clade reconstructed in this study, the chloroplast sequences from one hybrid species were not grouped into a subclade, implying instability caused by hybridization. Failure to find morphological apomorphies and biogeographical patterns in this clade was likely partially due to reticulate hybridization. Genomic in situ hybridisation (GISH) and Southern genomic hybridisation were applied in order to gain further knowledge regarding generic delimitation of the genus Hystrix as well as to clarify the genomes of the Hystrix species H. patula, H. longearistata, H. coreana, H. duthiei and H. komarovii. The hybridisation intensity of different genomic probes was compared among the Hystrix species and with other Triticeae species. The Southern- and GISH results confirm that H. patula contains the StH genome and show that H. komarovii most likely has a variant of this StH genome. The other Hystrix species under study, i.e. H. longearistata, H. coreana and H. duthiei, contain an Ns basic genome, and most probably two variants of this basic genome, Ns 1 Ns 2 . The genus Hystrix is thus not a monophyletic group of species.  相似文献

Abstract: We describe avian remains from Novopskov, a new middle Eocene marine locality in Ukraine. The fossils constitute the most substantial collection of Palaeogene bird bones from Eastern Europe and contribute to a better knowledge of the Paratethyan seabird fauna. Most of the specimens belong to Pelagornithidae (bony‐toothed birds), and two species of very different size can be distinguished. The larger of these is tentatively referred to Dasornis sp., the smaller to Odontopteryx toliapica. The specimens include skeletal elements that were not described for Palaeogene bony‐toothed birds and document previously unknown morphological differences between Palaeogene and Neogene Pelagornithidae. It is argued that the purported crane Eobalearica tugarinovi, from the middle Eocene of Kyrgyzstan, is probably also a bony‐toothed bird. A new genus and species of small Gaviiformes, Colymbiculus udovinchenkoi, is described, which is the earliest fossil record of a loon from Europe, preceding the next oldest specimens by more than 10 myr. The Ukrainian fossils document profound differences between middle Eocene and extant marine avifaunas of Europe, and whereas the middle Eocene Paratethyan avifauna appears to have been similar to that of the North Sea with regard to pelagornithid diversity, the absence of prophaethontids and relative abundance of Gaviiformes may indicate faunistic differences concerning the remaining seabirds.  相似文献
