Generalizations about the rate of behavioral development and mother-infant relations in nonhuman primates are often based largely on observations of a few closely related species of macaques. Patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas)are sufficiently distant phylogenetically and distinct in their social and ecological adaptations from the well-studied macaque species that observations of their patterns of infant development and mother-infant relations may indicate to what extent macaque patterns are typical of Old World monkey species. Eight patas infants living with their mothers in an established captive group were observed for 960 hr over the first year of life. These infants showed a rapid rate of behavioral development and attainment of independence from mothers. Patas also have one of the fastest rates of sexual maturation of any Old World monkey species. This pattern of rapid social and sexual development can be viewed as a response to a highly seasonal savannah environment in which there is a premium on ability to achieve nutritional, locomotor, and social self-sufficiency as quickly as possible and to reproduce as early and as often as developmental constraints will permit. Patterns of infant development and mother-infant relations may be best understood as an integral part of a species’ overall life history pattern. 相似文献

Methods used to study parental behavior are largely idiosyncratic and are rarely tested to verify that they yield reliable data. In particular, the minimum number and duration of observations used to describe behavior accurately is rarely, if ever, justified. Using data on parental behavior of Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus tyrannus) collected by video in Oregon, we evaluated three questions regarding sampling methods: (1) Is within‐pair behavior sufficiently consistent among days so that observations from a single session are representative of parental behavior? (2) Does a 1‐h sampling window fairly represent parental behavior or is a longer period needed to accurately describe behavior? (3) Assuming that a 1‐h period is sufficient, does the first hour immediately after disturbance to start recordings yield reliable data? We found that among‐pair differences in parental behavior were consistent over different days and that a single hour of observation was representative of parental behavior over a longer (2–3 h) period of observation. However, our data also suggested that the first hour yielded less representative data than the remaining 2–3 h; nonetheless, consistent among‐pair differences were still detectable. The shortcoming of data collected in the first hour appeared to be due to a lingering effect of human disturbance from setting up recording devices rather than a time‐of‐day effect. We suggest that researchers test the appropriateness of their methods, but our kingbird data suggest that observations over relatively brief periods can yield useful and reliable data. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to describe patterns of infant care and development in family groups of the monogamous titi (Callicebus moloch). Three infant titis were observed with their natal family groups over the first six months of life. Field observations of extensive male involvement with infants were confirmed. Adult males were clearly the infants' primary social companions, and infants spent more time in contact with adult males at all ages than with mothers or older siblings. However, mothers and siblings also carried infants at times and interacted with them in affiliative ways (e.g., grooming, nuzzling, play). Mothers often invited nursing, but otherwise it was infants who primarily initiated transfers between carriers and approaches to parents, reminding us that the infants' own activities and their effects on caregivers should not be overlooked in considerations of the patterns of infant care. This is particularly important for those species exhibiting extensive parental involvement by males. It is suggested that substantial male care of young titi infants leads to several important consequences for the infant's social development, including the development of a stronger attachment to the father than the mother. 相似文献

Observations on the behavioral development of two okapi calves and one giraffe calf were made at Brookfield Zoo. The following behaviors were monitored for 4 to 6 mo after birth; nursing duration and nursing attempts, mother-infant distance, bunting the mother's udder, lying, moving, maternal grooming, mother and infant autogrooming, object licking, tail chewing, and contact by others in the herd. Behaviors in both species showed oscillating patterns with high levels of mother-infant contact behaviors at 3–4 wk, 9–11 wk, and 14–15 wk in okapis. Giraffe infants showed similar oscillations with high periods of contact about 2–5 wk later than those in okapis. Other behaviors oscillated in concert with these, with specific correlations occurring between nursing behaviors and grooming behaviors. A main difference between okapi and giraffe development centered around maternal motivation during the high contact (regressive) periods. In okapis, after 10–12 wk there was a low rate of nursing success, whereas in giraffes the percentage of success in nursing rose with later behavioral oscillations. The regressive periods became conflict periods in okapis, whereas in the giraffe, the mother initiated the periods. This difference was in accordance with the unique strategy of infant rearing in wild giraffes in which there is an extended “hider” period when older calves are left together in shaded areas with an adult sentry. Field studies also indicated probable oscillations of mother-infant contact and a prolonged period of the mother initiating contact with her calf. 相似文献

Spiders are useful models for testing different hypotheses and methodologies relating to animal personality and behavioral syndromes because they show a range of behavioral types and unique physiological traits (e.g., silk and venom) that are not observed in many other animals. These characteristics allow for a unique understanding of how physiology, behavioral plasticity, and personality interact across different contexts to affect spider''s individual fitness and survival. However, the relative effect of extrinsic factors on physiological traits (silk, venom, and neurohormones) that play an important role in spider survival, and which may impact personality, has received less attention. The goal of this review is to explore how the environment, experience, ontogeny, and physiology interact to affect spider personality types across different contexts. We highlight physiological traits, such as neurohormones, and unique spider biochemical weapons, namely silks and venoms, to explore how the use of these traits might, or might not, be constrained or limited by particular behavioral types. We argue that, to develop a comprehensive understanding of the flexibility and persistence of specific behavioral types in spiders, it is necessary to incorporate these underlying mechanisms into a synthesized whole, alongside other extrinsic and intrinsic factors. 相似文献

The maternal and paternal behavior of Kerodon rupestris was examined. Quantitative differences between fathers and mothers and between mothers raising young with fathers present and with fathers absent were assessed. Growth rates of young raised by paired females and by lone females were compared. The male provides direct paternal care to the young by engaging in allogrooming, sniffing, and huddling. There is no significant difference between the sexes in the amount of contact promoting behavior given to the offspring, nor are the sexes significantly different in the amount of exploratory sniffing of the offspring. When the male is absent, the female spends a greater amount of time in contact with the young. Young raised by lone females gained significantly more weight than young raised by paired females. The suggestion that indirect paternal care acts to reduce female aggression to the young and relieve the energy expenditure burden of the female is discussed. The results indicate that social experience is gained at the expense of physical nurturing when the male is present. 相似文献

Parental favoritism in birds would be enhanced if parents cancontrol any egg feature influencing the ontogeny of the embryoduring incubation. Egg size and composition may influence theduration of incubation and hatching periods, and eggs bearingembryos of different sex may differ in size and composition. Therefore, the sex of the embryo could also influence its ontogenybefore hatching. We tested this prediction by investigatingthe duration of the embryonic period of different-sex embryosin the Eurasian kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), a sexually dimorphicraptor in which adult females are approximately 20% heavierthan are adult males. We found the first evidence of sex differencesin the duration of the embryonic period in avian eggs. Femaleembryos had a shorter embryonic period than did male embryos, which allowed females to hatch earlier in the hatching sequenceand assume a higher rank than that of males in the intrabroodsize hierarchy. Embryos with a fast growth and development resultedin hatchlings with greater residual reserves and thus largermass, which suggests that a shorter embryonic period requiresless maintenance metabolism relative to growth. Our resultsalso indicated that early hatching may be advantageous to gaina high rank in the size hierarchy within the brood independentlyof the effect of sex on fledgling mass. Sex differences in avianegg ontogeny may therefore be a factor shaping life-historytraits associated with parental control of sibling competition, which should be addressed in any future work on optimal reproductiveinvestment. 相似文献

Instantaneous sampling of eight behavior categories for a captive mother sea otter (Enhydra lutris) and her four pups was conducted continuously during the first three months following each pup's birth. Initially, pup-grooming and rest occupied the largest proportion of the mother's time. Despite a steady decline in the amount of time the mother spent pup-grooming, the mother continued to groom the pup a substantial amount of time three months after the pup's birth. The proportion of time the mother spent resting, self-grooming, or swimming did not change significantly over the study period, suggesting that these behaviors are important to the mother's self-maintenance. The newborn pups' behaviors were initially limited to rest, active, and nursing, with large proportions of time spent resting and nursing. A significant increase in self-grooming occurred regularly by week 2, followed by increases in swimming (week 3), diving (week 6), and feeding (week 7). Three months after birth, the pups' behavior budgets were similar to their mother, with the exception that pups self-groomed substantially less than their mother self-groomed. The lower proportion of pup self-grooming may be due to the continued close proximity to their mother in captivity, which afforded extended association, and allowed the mother to continue to perform this complex behavior for the pup. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

As an individual matures from birth to adulthood, many factors may influence the positional repertoire. The biological and behavioral changes that accompany a growing individual are expected to influence foraging strategy, social status and interaction, diet, predator avoidance strategies, and ultimately positional behavior as a behavioral link between anatomy and the environment. In this work, positional behavior is considered as an important feature of life history in juvenile and adult white‐faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) and mantled howling monkeys (Alouatta palliata) inhabiting the same tropical forest in Costa Rica. During growth and development ontogenetic changes in body size, limb proportions, and motor skills are likely to influence locomotion and posture through the arboreal canopy. I collected data on positional behavior, activity, branch size, branch angle, and crown location during a 12‐month period at Estación Biológica La Suerte in northeastern Costa Rica. Life history timing and differences in rates of growth did not predictably influence the development of adultlike positional behaviors in Cebus and Alouatta. Young Cebus resembled the adult pattern of positional behavior by 6 months of age while howlers exhibited significant differences in several positional behavior categories through 24 months of age. The positional repertoire of both species revealed similarities in the types of modes used during feed/forage and travel in juveniles and adults. Data presented here suggest that the environment exerts different pressures on growing Cebus and Alouatta that may relate to diet, energy expenditure, foraging skill, and/or social learning. We collected data from wild and reintroduced golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) to describe the behavior of donor and recipient during food transfers, evaluate the effect of supplemental feeding on food transfer behavior, and examine various hypotheses concerning the function of food transfers in primates. Behavioral observations were conducted on 12 groups of tamarins with young (N = 30) between the ages of 1 week and 1 year old. Results show that food transfers involve various behaviors, from steals by recipients to offers by donors; transfers mostly derive from adults and are directed at immature weaned young (between 3 and 9 months old); and that most items transferred were prey or fruits that require skill to process. Eleven percent of food transfers were preceded by an adult vocalization specific to that context, whereas 86% were preceded by conspicuous infant vocalizations and begging behavior. The most common vocalizations were loud and atonal (rasps) and broad banded frequency modulated (trills). Infants born to reintroduced parents vocalized less, whereas reintroduced adults vocalized more before transferring food than their wild counterparts. Reintroduced adults and young received more food transfers (4.4 per hr) than did wild‐born adults and young (2.2 per hr). Our findings suggest that food transfer in golden lion tamarins is best understood as provisioning of young that have not fully developed foraging skills to ensure they get the necessary resources for growth and survival. Human males are remarkable among mammals in the level of investment they provide to their wives and children. However, there has been debate as to the degree to which men actually invest and through which fitness pathways the benefits of familial investment are realized. Much of the previous research exploring these issues has focused on men's roles as providers, but few have explored correlates of men's direct parental care. Although this is reasonable given men's parental emphasis on provisioning, the providing of direct care is more straightforward with a clear provider and recipient and little ambiguity as to the care‐giver's intent. Here, we explore contextual correlates of men's direct care among the Tsimane of Bolivia to determine the extent to which such care is patterned to enhance its effectiveness in increasing child wellbeing and the efficient functioning of the family. We also explore whether Tsimane fathers provide care in ways that enhance the positive effect it has on the wife's perception of the care provider. Overall, we find that Tsimane men appear responsive to the needs of children and the family, but show that there is little evidence that men respond to factors expected to increase the impact that men's care has on their reputations with their wives. Three male maned wolves were successfully introduced to their mates and 7‐ to 12‐week‐old pups at the Houston Zoological Gardens and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in 1994 and 1995. The introductions took 3–7 weeks and had three stages: 1) allowing the male to see the female and pups through a chain‐link panel or a full chain‐link fence, 2) introducing the male and female without the pups present, and 3) introducing the male to the pups. For 7 days before Stage 2 and 7 days during Stage 3, the adults were observed for 150 hr. The amount of time they spent active and the amount of time they spent near the pups were recorded, as well as all behaviors they directed to the pups. After the males were introduced, the females' activity decreased, and the males' activity increased. The females spent less time near the pups after the introduction. The introduction did not affect the females' rates of affiliative or aggressive behaviors to the pups, and there was no difference between males' and females' rates of affiliative or aggressive behaviors. This introduction procedure offers an alternative to leaving the male with the pups from the time they are born. The adults' behavioral changes after the introduction show the benefits that occur when captive male maned wolves are allowed to help rear their pups. Lateralized turning behavior in startle responses and upon descent after surfacing for a breath of air has been documented for tadpoles in several anuran species. A left‐handed preference is most common and was previously thought to be linked to the asymmetry in spiracle location. Here, we investigate the presence of behavioral asymmetries in tadpoles of Agalychnis callidryas and Leptodactylus melanonotus in explosive turns after air‐breathing. Data were also collected on lateralized posture in the orientation of tails of embryonic A. callidryas within the egg case, as well as the startle response of free‐swimming tadpoles exposed to mechanical stimulation. A left‐curled tail bias was found among several clutches from Costa Rica, but this was not the case among clutches examined from Panama. Free‐living tadpoles of L. melanonotus displayed a distinct right‐handed preference during explosive turns. While some tadpoles of A. callidryas were at stages too early to detect any explosive turns when breathing, later‐staged individuals did display a left‐handed bias in startle response to mechanical stimulation. Additionally, it appears that the expression of behavioral lateralization of larvae (but not embryos) may predict whether or not the adults exhibit similar lateralization. Findings herein provide insight into the ontogeny and evolutionary origins of lateralized behavior in anurans. 相似文献

AbstractWe have determined the extent to which individual responses of domestic cats on being handled by an unfamiliar person are stable between 2 and 33 months of age. Twenty-nine household cats from nine litters were tested at 2, 4, 12, 24 and 33 months of age, by being held for 1 minute by a standard, unfamiliar person. Between 4 and 33 months of age, individual differences in the number of attempts made by the cat to escape, and in whether or not it showed signs of distress, were stable, with the partial exception of the test at 12 months. There was no consistency between tests in whether or not a particular cat purred. At 2 months of age, the number of escape attempts was highest in cats which had been handled the least in the second month of life, but this trend was reversed in the number of escape attempts made at 4 months. The lack of distress exhibited by all cats in the test at 2 months indicated that all had received at least adequate socialization to people, and that none were therefore comparable with the unsocialized cats used in several previous studies. We conclude that under normal domestic conditions, the behavior of a cat when handled by an unfamiliar person reflects a stable character trait, and that extensive handling during the socialization period may be subsequently associated with a reduction in inhibited behavior when interacting with an unfamiliar person. 相似文献

In many species of canids the male's role in reproduction extends to providing extensive or some parental care to his offspring. Maned wolves are a monogamous canid species whose males have been observed providing parental care to their offspring in captivity, but no field observations exist. We observed a wild pair of maned wolves at their nest site in a period soon after the female had given birth for a total period of 65 days. We made five observation sessions with an average of 3–4 days each separated by approximately 2 weeks. Direct visual observations of maned wolves were made each 30 min during the hours of darkness (17:00–07:00) using night-vision binoculars and confirmed by VHF radiotelemetry. During observations we recorded the location of the male and the female in relation to the nest (i.e., in the nest, nearby or long way from the nest). The results showed that the female spent more than 60.44% of her time in or near the nest. The male spent 28.90% of his time in or near the nest. There was a positive significant correlation between the female and the male in terms of the amount of time spent in or near the nest (P<0.01). The maned wolves showed a strong temporal variation in time spent in or near the nest. In conclusion, our data show that wild male maned wolves—probably—provide parental care through provision of food to their female and presumed offspring rather than “babysitting.” Zoo Biol 28:69–74, 2009. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Little information has been published on the reproductive biology and behavior of the emperor tamarin (Saguinus imperator). We analyzed twelve years of data on emperor tamarins at the Los Angeles Zoo and made comparisons with data on cotton-top tamarins (Saguinus o. oedipus) and golden lion tamarins (Leontopithecus rosalia) from the same collection. Secondary sex ratios did not differ significantly from 50:50. Births were not strictly seasonal for any species. The number of infants reared had a significant effect on interbirth interval for all species, with shorter intervals when only one or no infants were reared, but females did sometimes conceive early in lactation. In emperor tamarin families, all fathers and most older siblings carried new infants, usually beginning within a few days after a birth. Previous exposure to younger siblings did not appear to be critical to the development of competent parental behavior by zooborn emperor tamarin females. 相似文献

Reproduction, physical growth and behavioral development in slow loris (Nycticebus coucang,Lorisidae)
E. Zimmermann 《Human Evolution》1989,4(2-3):171-179
Reproduction of slow loris maintained in in- and outdoor enclosures in the natural day-night-cycle of southern Germany seems
to be seasonally dependant. Mating occurs during summer, delivery of offspring during winter. Gestation length as determined
from mid-estrus was 186–187 days. Copulation takes place over two to five consecutive days during estrus. Litter size for
each of the recorded births was one. Lactation lasts for five to seven months. Sexual maturity is reached at about 1 1/2 to
2 years. Physical growth and the first appearance of main locomotor, behavioral and vocal patterns are described until nutritive
weaning. With regard to acoustic structures, the vocal repertoire of newborn slow loris is quite similar to that of adults.
During ontogeny main changes are discerned in the temporal pattern and pitch frequency of vocalizations and in their use.
Results are compared with other primates. 相似文献

We investigated acoustic and visual communication concurrently in wild caught adult and captive-born, first generation offspring of the East African Rift Lake cichlid fish Tramitichromis intermedius. Only males emit sound during courtship. Sound production is always accompanied by quivering, but quiver behavior is not always accompanied by sound. This separation of quivering and sound supports the hypothesis that sound production is intentional serving a communicative role. As spawning nears, both sound production and quiver behavior increase. In terms of the ontogeny of sound production, the first observation of courtship occurs just days before the first spawning event and the first sound emission accompanies the first courtship activity. The accompaniment of quivering with sound as well as the escalation of the two behaviors with the approach of spawning follows similar patterns in wild caught and captive-born males. The tight correlation between behavior and sound production in both groups indicates their simultaneous performance plays an important role in reproduction. It is probable that the ability to produce sound and perform quiver behavior at the same time may be a measure of mate quality. 相似文献
