The influence of bacterial hemoglobin, VHb, on dechlorinationand degradation of 2-chlorobenzoate (2-CBA) by recombinantBurkholderia sp. under variable oxygen availability with an initial dissolved oxygenconcentration of 0.27 mM-0.72 mM was investigated in batch and continuous culture. Abilityto express VHb was provided to recombinant Burkholderia by transformationwith the VHb gene, vgb, on plasmid pSC160. 100% of 0.5 mM CBA was degraded incultures with 85% and 70% of total volume as headspace air in closed reactorsby both wild type and recombinant Burkholderia. The recombinant cultures were able todechlorinate and degrade 100% of the 2-CBA in less than 48 hours at 30 °Ccompared to more than 120 hours for wild type cultures. The rate and extent of CBAdegradation by recombinant cultures with 40% of total volume as headspace air was higher than thoseachieved by wild type cells at the end of the 168 hours of incubation period, 98and 73%, respectively. The chloride released: CBA degraded molar ratio for cultures with 40%of total volume headspace air was nearly stoichiometric (molar ratio = 1.0) for recombinantstrains, whereas it was non-stoichiometric (molar ratio = 0.24)for wild type cells. The results suggest a suicidal meta-pathway for wild type cells and a complete dechlorinationand degradation pathway for recombinant cells under hypoxic conditions. The degradation and dechlorination ability of both types of cells was alsoinvestigated in continuous reactor studies by varying the dilution rate under hypoxicconditions. Regarding potential of the recombinant strain for 2-CBA degradation in eitheropen ecosystems or closed bioreactor bioremediation systems, the stability of the plasmidcontaining vgb in the recombinant cells was also studied; the plasmid was100% stable at 0.025 h-1 dilution rate (1.7 d hydraulic retention time),even after one month.  相似文献

Using genetic engineering, the Vitreoscilla (bacterial) hemoglobin gene (vgb) was integrated stably into the chromosomes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Burkholderia sp. strain DNT. This was done for both wild type vgb and two site-directed mutants of vgb that produce Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) with lowered oxygen affinities; in all cases functional VHb was expressed. Similar to previous results, the wild type VHb improved growth for both species and degradation of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (Burkholderia sp.) or benzoic acid (P. aeruginosa) under both normal and low aeration conditions. Both mutant vgbs enhanced these parameters compared to wild type vgb, and the improvement was seen in both species. The enhancements were generally greater at low aeration than at normal aeration. The results demonstrate the possibility that the positive effects provided by VHb may be augmented by protein engineering.  相似文献

Expression of vgb, encoding Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb), in Burkholderia strain YV1 was previously shown to improve cell growth and enhance 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) degradation compared with control strain DNT, especially under hypoxic conditions. In the work reported here, the ratio of 2,4-DNT degraded to oxygen uptake was approximately 5-fold larger for strain YV1 than for strain DNT. The addition of purified VHb to cytosolic fractions of strain DNT increased 2,4-DNT degradation 1.5-fold, compared with 1.1-fold for control bovine Hb, but increased the 2,4-DNT degradation 2.7-fold when added to partially purified 2,4-DNT dioxygenase, compared with 1.3-fold for bovine Hb. This suggests a direct transfer of oxygen from VHb to the oxygenase. In a bioreactor at high 2,4-DNT concentration (using 100 ml oleyl alcohol containing 2 g 2,4-DNT as the second phase) with 1.5 l culture, both strains could remove 0.8 g 2,4-DNT by 120 h; and, under the same conditions in a fed-batch reactor, the degradation increased to 1 g for strain YV1 but not for strain DNT.  相似文献

The Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) gene (vgb) was integrated into the chromosome of Bacillus thuringiensis BMB171 using integrative vector pEG491. The production of VHb was confirmed by CO-difference spectra analysis. Fermentation experiments results showed that with the production of VHb, the critical oxygen concentration (COC) of the host strain was reduced from 18 to 12%. The maximum viable cell counts of the VHb+ strain in high, middle, and low aeration/agitation fermentations were 0.94-, 1.23-, and 1.59-fold of those of the VHb strain, respectively. Under the same conditions, the yields of insecticidal crystal proteins (ICP) by VHb+ strain were 1.22-, 1.63-, and 3.13-fold of those of the VHb strain. The production of VHb also accelerated the formation of ICP and spores. These results indicated that the production of VHb could improve the cell density and ICP yield of B. thuringiensis, especially under low aeration/agitation condition.  相似文献

The growth, biofiltering efficiency and uptake rates of Ulva clathrata were studied in a series of outdoor tanks, receiving waste water directly from a shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture pond, under constant aeration and two different water regimes: (1) continuous flow, with 1 volume exchange a day (VE day-1) and (2) static regime, with 1 VE after 4 days. Water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (PO4), chlorophyll-a (chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS), macroalgal biomass (fresh weight) and tissue nutrient assimilation were monitored over 12 days. Ulva clathrata was highly efficient in removing the main inorganic nutrients from effluent water, stripping 70–82% of the total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) and 50% PO4 within 15 h. Reductions in control tanks were much lower (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). After 3 days, the mean uptake rates by the seaweed biomass under continuous flow were 3.09 mg DIN g DW day−1 (383 mg DIN m−2 day−1) and 0.13 mg PO4 g DW day−1 (99 mg PO4 m−2 day−1), being significantly higher than in the static regime (Tukey HSD, P < 0.05). The chl-a decreased in seaweed tanks, suggesting that U. clathrata inhibited phytoplankton growth. Correlations between the cumulative values of DIN removed from the water and total nitrogen assimilated into the seaweed biomass (r = 0.7 and 0.8, P < 0.05), suggest that nutrient removal by U. clathrata dominated over other processes such as phytoplankton and bacterial assimilation, ammonia volatilization and nutrient precipitation.  相似文献

Two series of experiments were conducted to determine suitable growth factors for the mass propagation of the local algal isolate Amphora sp. A higher growth rate of 0.2 doubling (μ) day−1 was attained at a lower photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD; 11.4 μmol photon m−2s−1) compared to cultures exposed to higher levels of PPFD (16.1 μmol photon m−2s−1, −0.1 μ day −1; 31.3 μmol photon m−2s−1, 0.0 μ day−1). Cultures located inside the laboratory had a significantly higher cell density (133 × 104 cells cm−2) and growth rate (0.3 μ day−1) compared to those located outdoors (100 × 104 cells cm−2, 0.2 μ day−1). A comparison of nutrient medium across two locations showed that lipid content was significantly higher in cultures enriched with F/2MTM (macronutrients + trace metals) and F/2MV (macronutrients + vitamins). Saturated fatty acids were also present in high concentrations in cultures enriched with F/2M (macronutrients only). Significantly higher amounts of saturated fatty acids were observed in cultures located outdoors (33.1%) compared to those located indoors (26.6%). The protein, carbohydrates and n-6 fatty acid content of Amphora sp. were influenced by the location and enrichment of the cultures. This study has identified growth conditions for mass culture of Amphora sp. and determined biochemical composition under those culture conditions. Gayralia K.L. Vinogr. is a monostromatic green alga of commercial importance in the southern Brazil, and its cultivation is being considered. This paper reports some basic aspects of the biology of this poorly known genus. Two populations of Gayralia spp., from outer and inner sectors of Paranaguá Bay, showed an asexual life history with a distinct pattern of thallus ontogeny. In one population (Gayralia sp. 1), zooids developed an expanded monostromatic blade directly, while in the other (Gayralia sp. 2) zooids produced an intermediate saccate stage, before giving rise to a monostromatic blade. Thalli of the two species differ in size and in cell diameter. The effects of temperature (16–30°C), irradiance (50–100 μmol photons m−2 s−1), and salinity (5–40 psu) on the growth of both populations were assessed. Plantlets of Gayralia sp. 1 from in vitro cultures showed a broader tolerance to all salinity and irradiance levels tested, with the highest growth rate (GR; mean 17% day−1) at 21.5°C and 100 μmol photons m−2 s−1. Plantlets of Gayralia sp. 1 collected during the winter in the field showed higher GR, ranging from 5% day−1 to 7.5% day−1 in salinities from 20 to 40 psu, and 2.0% day−1 and 4.3% day−1 for plantlets collected during the summer. Gayralia sp. 2 from the field showed highest GR at salinity of 15 psu. These results suggest distinct physiological responses of the two species, in accordance with their distribution: Gayralia sp. 2 is limited to the inner areas of the estuary, while Gayralia sp. 1 grows in outer areas, where salinity values are higher than 20 psu. These data indicate that Gayralia sp. 1 has a higher potential for aquaculture than Gayralia sp. 2 due to its larger thalli, higher GR, and wider tolerance to environmental variations.  相似文献

Candida utiilis NRRL Y-900 was grown on pineapple cannery waste as the sole carbon and energy source in a chemostat at dilution rates ranging between 0.05 and 0.65 h−1 to determine the growth kinetics. The cell yield coefficient varied with dilution rate and a maximum value of 0.662 ± 0.002 gx/gcarb was obtained at a dilution rate of 0.4 h−1. At steady state, the concentrations of carbohydrate, reducing sugar, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) appeared to follow Monod kinetics. At maximum specific growth rate (μmax) 0.65 h−1, the saturation constants for carbohydrate, reducing sugar and COD were 0.51 ± 0.02 gcarb/1, 0.046 ± 0.003 grs/1, and 1.036 ± 0.001 gCOD/1, respectively. Maximum biomass productivity (Q x max) 2.8 ± 0.03 gx/1 h was obtained at a dilution rate of 0.5 h−1. At this dilution rate, only 71.0 ± 0.41% COD was removed whereas at a dilution rate of 0.1 h−1, 98.2 ± 0.35% reduction in COD was achieved. At a dilution rate of 0.4 h−1, the optimal yeast productivity and reduction in COD were 2.7 ± 0.13 gp/1 h, and 84.2 ± 0.42%, respectively. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Quasi steady state growth of Lactococcus lactis IL 1403 was studied in glucose-limited A-stat cultivation experiments with acceleration rates (a) from 0.003 to 0.06 h−2 after initial stabilization of the cultures in chemostat at D = 0.2–0.3 h−1. It was shown that the high limit of quasi steady state growth rate depended on the acceleration rate used—at an acceleration rate 0.003 h−2 the quasi steady state growth was observed until μ crit = 0.59 h−1, which is also the μ max value for the culture. Lower values of μ crit were observed at higher acceleration rates. The steady state growth of bacteria stabilized at dilution rate 0.2 h−1 was immediately disrupted after initiating acceleration at the highest acceleration rate studied—0.06 h−2. Observation was made that differences [Δ(μ − D)] of the specific growth rates from pre-programmed dilution rates were the lowest using an acceleration rate of 0.003 h−2 (< 4% of preset changing growth rate). The adaptability of cells to follow preprogrammed growth rate was found to decrease with increasing dilution rate—it was shown that lower acceleration rates should be applied at higher growth rates to maintain the culture in the quasi steady state. The critical specific growth rate and the biomass yields based on glucose consumption were higher if the medium contained S 0 = 5 g L−1 glucose instead of S 0 = 10 g L−1. It was assumed that this was due to the inhibitory effect of lactate accumulating at higher concentrations in the latter cultures. Parallel A-stat experiments at the same acceleration and dilution rates showed good reproducibility—Δ(μ − D) was less than 5%, standard deviations of biomass yields per ATP produced (Y ATP), and biomass yields per glucose consumed (Y XS) were less than 15%.  相似文献

The effects of temperature, irradiance, and daylength on Sargassum horneri growth were examined at the germling and adult stages to discern their physiological differences. Temperature–irradiance (10, 15, 20, 25, 30°C × 20, 40, 80 μmol photons m−2s−1) and daylength (8, 12, 16, 24 h) experiments were carried out. The germlings and blades of S. horneri grew over a wide range of temperatures (10–25°C), irradiances (20–80 μmol photons m−2s−1), and daylengths (8–24 h). At the optimal growth conditions, the relative growth rates (RGR) of the germlings were 21% day−1 (25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 13% day−1 (8 h daylength). In contrast, the RGRs of the blade weights were 4% day−1 (15°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1) and 5% day−1 (12 h daylength). Negative growth rates were found at 20 μmol photons m−2s−1 of 20°C and 25°C treatments after 12 days. This phenomenon coincides with the necrosis of S. horneri blades in field populations. In conclusion, we found physiological differences between S. horneri germlings and adults with respect to daylength and temperature optima. The growth of S. horneri germlings could be enhanced at 25°C, 20 μmol photons m−2s−1, and 8 h daylength for construction of Sargassum beds and restoration of barren areas.  相似文献

Our 1 year study was aimed at assessing seasonal patterns and controls on phytoplankton primary production (PPR) and biomass (chlorophyll a) in a fourth order section of the middle Cape Fear River in North Carolina, USA, and to determine the impact of three low-head lock and dam (LD) structures on these variables within the 70 km study reach of this coastal river. Mean concentrations of NO3 –N, NH4 +–N and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) averaged 52.9, 6.0, and 3.6 μmol l−1 in monthly sampling, while the average light attenuation coefficient was 2.4 m−1. The average euphotic depth was 2.1 m. Nutrient concentrations and attenuation coefficients were not significantly different above versus below each LD, or along the entire study reach. Significantly higher concentrations of dissolved O2 below versus above each LD were attributed to re-aeration during spillway transit. No seasonal pattern in physicochemical properties was apparent. Phytoplankton chlorophyll a concentrations ranged from <1 to 36 μg l−1, while rates of primary production ranged from 18 to 2,580 mg C m−2 day−1, with values for both variables peaking in the spring and early summer. Chlorophyll a and primary productivity values were consistently higher above versus below each LD in May and June suggesting a seasonal effect, but values were otherwise similar such that overall means were not significantly different. Several factors point to light as the primary control on phytoplankton in the middle Cape Fear River: high nutrient concentrations; a low ratio of euphotic : mixing depth (0.46); progressive increases in chlorophyll a and radiocarbon uptake in all treatments in quarterly nutrient enrichment bioassays conducted at levels of irradiance elevated relative to in situ river values; and consistently low quarterly values of (maximum rate of chlorophyll-normalized C uptake; ≤3.7 mg C mg chl a−1 h−1) and I k (light saturation parameter; ≤104 μmol photons m−2 s−1) for photosynthetic light–response (PI) curves. The amount of oxygen released from the roots of Phragmites australis was quantified to examine the effects of airflow through dead culms, radiation, and temperature on radial oxygen loss (ROL). To investigate the effect of dead culms on ROL quantitatively, the ROL of individual plants with open dead culms was compared to that of plants with sealed dead culms as a function of light intensity and temperature. The relationship between ROL and plant morphology (aboveground biomass, shoot diameter, shoot height) was investigated. When exposed to 300, 600, and 900 μmol m−2 s−1 light, the ROL was 15.6, 22.5, and 30.9 μmol O2 g−1 dry root day−1, respectively, from plants with open dead culms and 11.0, 16.4, and 23.3 μmol O2 g−1 dry root day−1, respectively, from plants with sealed dead culms. The ROL from plants with open dead culms was obviously higher than that from plants with sealed dead culms in every condition. The ROL from plants with open culms was 37% and 30% higher than that from plants with sealed culms at 20°C and 30°C, respectively. The effects of plant-specific parameters such as leaf area and shoot diameter on radial oxygen loss were evident. From the point of view of rhizosphere oxidation during the growing season, the existence of open dead culms should be taken into consideration for optimal plant management in constructed wetlands. This study provides a theoretical understanding of the effects of open dead culms, light conditions, and temperature on radial oxygen loss. Handling editor: S. M. Thomaz  相似文献

The three color morphotypes of the red alga Kappaphycus alvarezii (brown, red and green) were cultured in Camranh Bay, Vietnam, using the fixed off-bottom monoline culture method to evaluate the growth rate, carrageenan yield, 3,6-anhydrogalactose, gel strength and lectin content. The brown morphotype was cultivated over a 12-month period; the red and green morphotypes were over a 6-month period. At the 60-day culture timepoint, the brown morphotype showed a higher growth rate (3.5–4.6% day−1) from September to February, and lower growth rate (1.6–2.8% day−1) from March to August. Significant (P < 0.05) differences in growth rate between culture months were found with the brown morphotype. High growth rates for the red (3.6–4.4% day−1) and green (3.7–4.2% day−1) morphotypes were obtained from September to February. The carrageenan yield, 3,6-anhydrogalactose and gel strength of the three morphotypes showed little variation, with the highest values obtained in November–December. At the 30-day sampling point, the brown morphotype had a higher lectin content (167–302 μg g−1 dry alga) from August to March and a lower lectin content (23–104 μg g−1 dry alga) from April to July. High lectin contents were recorded for the red (139–338 μg g−1 dry alga) and green (124–259 μg g−1 dry alga) morphotypes from September to February. This study shows that the different morphotypes of K. alvarezii can be grown in the tropical waters of the Camranh during the northeast monsoon, and part of the southwest monsoon, especially the brown morphotype, which can be grown during any season.  相似文献

The gene (vgb) encoding Vitreoscilla (bacterial) hemoglobin (VHb) was electroporated into Gordonia amarae, where it was stably maintained, and expressed at about 4 nmol VHb g−1 of cells. The maximum cell mass (OD600) of vgb-bearing G. amarae was greater than that of untransformed G. amarae for a variety of media and aeration conditions (2.8-fold under normal aeration and 3.4-fold under limited aeration in rich medium, and 3.5-fold under normal aeration and 3.2-fold under limited aeration in mineral salts medium). The maximum level of trehalose lipid from cultures grown in rich medium plus hexadecane was also increased for the recombinant strain, by 4.0-fold in broth and 1.8-fold in cells under normal aeration and 2.1-fold in broth and 1.4-fold in cells under limited aeration. Maximum overall biosurfactant production was also increased in the engineered strain, by 1.4-fold and 2.4-fold for limited and normal aeration, respectively. The engineered strain may be an improved source for producing purified biosurfactant or an aid to microorganisms bioremediating sparingly soluble contaminants in situ.  相似文献

Summary The cultivation of photosynthetic microorganisms such as the microalga Spirulina platensis can provide an alternative source of food. The water in Mangueira Lagoon (Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil) has several required nutrients for the growth of Spirulina and could be added to culture medium to reduce the cost of producing S. platensis. Although little studied, repeated batch cultivation is a very useful technique because it has a better cost–benefit ratio than other cultivation methods. In a series of runs, we studied the influence of cell concentration, renewal rate and strain on the specific growth rate and biomass productivity of S. platensis during repeated batch cultivation, the runs taking place in 2-l Erlenmeyer flasks for 2160 h at 30 °C and a light intensity of 2500 lux under a 12 h photoperiod. The three factors studied had a significant (P < 0.05) effect on the results (specific growth rate and productivity). Using Zarrouk’s medium, the highest specific growth rate (μX) was 0.111 day−1 while the biomass productivity (P X) was 0.0423 g l−1 day−1, while Mangueira Lagoon water supplemented with 10% Zarrouk’s medium gave μX = 0.113 day−1 and a productivity P X = 0.0467 g l−1 day−1. These values were two to three times higher than the results obtained in batch cultivation, indicating that the repeated batch cultivation of S. platensis is attractive and convenient.  相似文献

Sieved agricultural soil samples were treated with the anti-knock agent tetraethyl lead (Et4Pb), and the resulting effects were analyzed by microcalorimetry. Et4Pb additions resulted in an increase of the heat production rate, provided that oxygen was present and that the soil was not autoclaved. The increased heat production rate was accompanied by degradation of Et4Pb, as verified by speciation analysis (GC-MS) of the remaining Et4Pb and its ionic degradation products (triethyl lead and diethyl lead cations). Conclusive evidence was obtained that these transformations were mediated mainly by microbes. At an initial Et4Pb concentration of 2 g Pb/kg dry weight the biodegradation rate was about 780 μmol day−1 kg dry weight−1, whilst the chemical decomposition was only 50 μmol day−1 kg dry weight−1. A fivefold rise of the initial Et4Pb concentration resulted in a decrease of the biodegradation rate to 600 μmol day−1 kg dry weight−1 and an increase of the chemical decomposition to 200 μmol day−1 kg dry weight−1. The biodegradation rate was not influenced by the addition of glucose, which means that no indication for a cometabolic attack of Et4Pb was found. Codium fragile (Suringar) Hariot is an edible green alga farmed in Korea using seed stock produced from regeneration of isolated utricles and medullary filaments. Experiments were conducted to reveal the optimal conditions for nursery culture and out-growing of C. fragile. Sampling and measurement of underwater irradiance were carried out at farms cultivating C. fragile at Wando, on the southwestern coast of Korea, from October 2004 to August 2005. Growth of erect thalli and underwater irradiance were measured over a range of depths for three culture stages. During the nursery cultivation stage (Stage I), growth rate was greatest at 0.5 m depth (0.055 ± 0.032 mm day−1), where the average midday irradiance over 60 days was 924 ± 32 μmol photons m−2 s−1. During the pre-main cultivation stage (Stage II), the greatest growth rate occurred at a depth of 2 m (0.113 ± 0.003 mm day−1) with an average irradiance of 248 ± 116 μmol photons m−2 s−1. For the main cultivation stage (Stage III) of the alga, thalli achieved the greatest increase in biomass at 1 m depth (7.2 ± 1.0 kg fresh wt m−1). These results suggest that optimal growth at each cultivation stages of C. fragile could be controlled by depth of cultivation rope.  相似文献

Symbiotic dinoflagellates of the species Amphidinium are expected to be pharmaceutically useful microalgae because they produce antitumor macrolides. A microalgae production system with a large number of cells at a high density has been developed for the efficient production of macrolide compounds. In the present study, the effects of culture conditions on the cellular growth rate of dinoflagellates were investigated to determine the optimum culture conditions for obtaining high yields of microalgae. Amphidinium species was cultured under conditions with six temperature levels (21–35°C), six levels of photosynthetic photon flux density (15–70 μmol photons m−2 s−1), three levels of CO2 concentration (0.02–0.1%), and three levels of O2 concentration (0.2–21%). The number of cells cultured in a certain volume of solution was monitored microscopically and the cellular growth rate was expressed as the specific growth rate. The maximum specific growth rate was 0.022 h−1 at a temperature of 26°C and O2 concentration of 5%, and the specific growth rate was saturated at a CO2 concentration of 0.05%, a photosynthetic photon flux density of 35 μmol photons m−2 s−1 and a photoperiod of 12 h day−1 upon increasing each environmental parameter. The results demonstrate that Amphidinium species can multiply efficiently under conditions of relatively low light intensity and low O2 concentration.  相似文献

This paper focuses on modelling the growth rate and exopolysaccharides production of Anabaena sp. ATCC 33047, to be used in carbon dioxide removal and biofuels production. For this, the influence of dilution rate, irradiance and aeration rate on the biomass and exopolysaccharides productivity, as well as on the CO2 fixation rate, have been studied. The productivity of the cultures was maximum at the highest irradiance and dilution rate assayed, resulting to 0.5 gbio l−1 day−1 and 0.2 geps l−1 day−1, and the CO2 fixation rate measured was 1.0 gCO2 l−1 day−1. The results showed that although Anabaena sp. was partially photo-inhibited at irradiances higher than 1,300 μE m−2 s−1, its growth rate increases hyperbolically with the average irradiance inside the culture, and so does the specific exopolysaccharides production rate. The latter, on the other hand, decreases under high external irradiances, indicating that the exopolysaccharides metabolism hindered by photo-damage. Mathematical models that consider these phenomena have been proposed. Regarding aeration, the yield of the cultures decreased at rates over 0.5 v/v/min or when shear rates were higher than 60 s−1, demonstrating the existence of thus existence of stress damage by aeration. The behaviour of the cultures has been verified outdoors in a pilot-scale airlift tubular photobioreactor. From this study it is concluded that Anabaena sp. is highly recommended to transform CO2 into valuable products as has been proved capable of metabolizing carbon dioxide at rates of 1.2 gCO2 l−1 day−1 outdoors. The adequacy of the proposed equations is demonstrated, resulting to a useful tool in the design and operation of photobioreactors using this strain.  相似文献

The branching zooxanthellate soft coral Sinularia flexibillis releases antimicrobial and toxic compounds with potential pharmaceutical importance. As photosynthesis by the symbiotic algae is vital to the host, the light-dependency of the coral, including its specific growth rate (μ day−1) and the physiological response to a range of light intensities (10–1,000 μmol quanta m−2 s−1) was studied for 12 weeks. Although a range of irradiances from 100 to 400 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 was favorable for S. flexibilis, based on chlorophyll content, a light intensity around 100 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 was found to be optimal. The contents of both zooxanthellae and chlorophyll a were highest at 100 μmol quanta m−2 s−1. The specific budding rate showed almost the same pattern as the specific growth rate. The concentration of the terpene flexibilide, produced by this species, increased at high light intensities (200–600 μmol quanta m−2 s−1).  相似文献
