A new species of Geranium endemic to a small (~10 ha) area of the high Cumbres Calchaquíes, Tucumán, Argentina, is described. The species is unique within the genus in its highly condensed, plate-shaped growth form, its subterranean branching system, its thick, deep taproot, and its minute leaves with mostly 5–7 lobes. The environment is cold (~1.5°C mean annual temperature), but equable (low diurnal fluctuations). Soils are subject to intense moisture fluctuations and freeze-thaw cycles. The total population of the species is estimated at <10,000 individuals. 相似文献

American cutaneous leishmaniasis (ACL) is an endemic disease in Northern Argentina. We applied the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) followed by a hybridization labelled probe to 21 paraffin embedded human skin biopsies, already analyzed histologically, from leishmaniasis endemic areas in the province of Tucumán, Argentina. We used primers previously designed to detect a Leishmania-specific 120-base-pair fragment of kinetoplast DNA minicircle, other two primer pairs that amplify kDNA minicircles belonging to the L. braziliensis and L. mexicana complexes respectively, and specific oligonucleotide primers to detect L. (V.) braziliensis which amplify the sequence of the ribosomal protein L-14 of this species. The PCR-hybridization showed a sensitivity of 90.5% when compared to the histopathology test which was 61.9%. Five of the total samples analyzed were positive for the L. braziliensis complex whilst none was positive for the L. mexicana complex. The specific primers for L. (V.) braziliensis detected the parasite in four samples. These results are consistent with those reported for close endemic areas and demonstrate that the causative agent of human leishmaniasis in the analyzed cases was L. (V.) braziliensis. PCR should be used as a diagnostic tool for tegumentary leishmaniasis, especially in the mucosal form, and as a valuable technique for the identification of the Leishmania species that causes the disease in certain areas. 相似文献

In the present work, the hourly activity of Lutzomyia neivai was studied in the southern part of the province of Tucumán, Argentina, in an area of transmission of cutaneous leishmaniasis during two months of higher activity. In addition, the variables that influenced the abundance of Lu. neivai were evaluated. A total of 1,146 individuals belonging to Lu. neivai (97%) and Lutzomyia migonei (3%) were captured. The hourly activity of Lu. neivai was mainly nocturnal, with a bimodal pattern in both months. In January, the variable that most influenced the abundance of Lu. neivai was the temperature, whereas in April, that variable was humidity. These results may contribute to the design of anti-vectorial control measures at a micro-focal scale. 相似文献

A new species of rodent of the genus Phyllotis is described based in cranial and external morphology, as well as morphometric data. Additionally, sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome-b were used to asses the phylogenetic relationships. We have compared our specimens with all the extant species of the genus Phyllotis and also with some species of related genera, particularly with the most similar and with those that occur in the province of Tucumán and northwestern Argentina. The new species is large compared to the average size of the genus, and can be easily distinguished from all other species essentially by coloration and by cranial morphology. It is closely related to the recently described P. anitae, and these two species are, in turn, sister to P. osilae. The only two localities where the new species has been found are in the Upper Montane Forests of the southern portion of the Yungas Ecoregion, in the province of Tucumán, Argentina. 相似文献

Cytogenetic analysis was performed on twenty seven specimens of Akodon simulator simulator collected in three different localities of Tucumán Province, Argentina. Diploid number, chromosomal morphology and C and G banding patterns were studied. Eight different karyomorphs were found, with diploid numbers of 2n=38, 39, 40, 41, and 42. All individuals showed the same number of chromosomal arms (FN=42). G-bands enable to identify chromosomal pairs (1, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14) involved in three centric fusions. C-bands revealed that the heterochromatin is located in centromeric regions of the telocentric and biarmed chromosomes. The present study allowed us to document a new example of a floating multiple Robertsonian fusion polymorphism. The data are discussed in relation to the occurrence of Robertsonian polymorphism in natural populations.

Purpose
The purpose of this work is to quantify the environmental impact of the sugarcane industry in Tucumán (Argentina) through the life cycle analysis (LCA). The distinctive feature is the consideration of different technology levels (TLs) in the agricultural stage: high (HTL), medium (MTL), and low (LTL).Methods
The scope of the study covers the agricultural and industrial stages through a “from cradle to gate” approach (from sugarcane cultivation until production of finished products: sugar and alcohol). The system is divided into Agriculture, Sugar Factory, and Distillery. Data used for the inventory are mainly provided by local experts, sugarcane growers, and processing companies. The characteristics of each TL are taken from a regional classification. For the impact assessment, the CML 2001 model (nine impact categories) is used. Results and discussion
Regardless of the TL, in most of the impact categories, an important contribution attributable to the use of synthetic agrochemicals is evident. As for the comparison among TLs, the ethanol produced with HTL has less impact values than the ones produced with MTL and LTL in seven categories. These results can be mainly explained by the better cultural yields obtained with HTL, and to the fact that sugarcane is not burnt before harvesting in HTL as it is in MTL and LTL.Conclusions
This study explores the implications of using different TLs for the agricultural tasks on the sugarcane supply chain in Tucumán, which is characterized by a vertically nonintegrated productive scheme. If practices associated to HTL are implemented, a reduction of the environmental impact is observed in most categories. It is necessary to compare these results with economic and social implications to ensure sustainability of the sugarcane value chain.7.

In total, 9 endohelminth species were found to parasitize 7 fish species (2 cyprinids, 4 goodeids, and 1 poeciilid) from La Mintzita Reservoir, Michoacán, in central Mexico; 5 were larvae, including 3 allogenic species (Clinostomum complanatum, Tylodelphys sp., Posthodiplostomum minimum) and 2 autogenic species (Serpinema trispinosum, Spiroxys sp.). Four were enteric autogenic adults, i.e., Margotrema bravoae, Bothriocephalus acheilognathi, Proteocephalus longicollis, and Rhabdochona lichtenfelsi. The metacercariae of P. minimum reached the highest levels of prevalence and mean abundance among host species. Our results confirm the depauperate nature of the helminth communities of freshwater fishes from central Mexico. On the basis of this data set, we estimated the total endohelminth species richness for each component community by using 7 nonparametric estimators whose performance was evaluated with the unscaled measures of bias, precision, and accuracy. We found that Chaol and Bootstrap are the most precise and least biased methods for the 7 component communities: however, species richness was consistently underestimated. The underestimation was an unavoidable consequence of the patchy distribution of helminth species among different component communities, particularly at the small sample size used in our study. 相似文献

Community respiration in tropical Lake Xolotlán, Nicaragua, was assessed seasonally and during diurnal cycles, via oxygen consumption in bottle enclosures. Results were analysed in relation to phytoplankton biomass, mixing depth, depth of photic zone and phytoplankton production. A great part of community respiration was associated with the heterotrophic activity of the phytoplankton biomass or its degradation by bacteria and 80% of the variability in oxygen consumption was explained by the variation of chlorophyll-a. Specific rate of respiration was 1.5 mg O2 mg Chla-1 h-1 during diurnal cycles, which corresponded to less than 5% of the specific rate at optimum depth of production. Still, diurnal water column respiratory losses were always of the same magnitude as the total photosynthetic gains in the photic zone, since the mixing depth exceeded the depth of the photic zone. Total column net growth was zero at a ratio between depth of photic zone and mixing depth of 0.19. Water level variations however altered the mixing depth and affected this ratio and net growth. As a consequence, the phytoplankton biomass either increased or decreased until the ratio was re-established through changes of the photic zone depth, which was governed by the phytoplankton biomass itself through the chlorophyll-a light attenuation. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献

This article examines the renegotiation of gender and class in a rural Mexican community where economic crisis in the sugar
industry led foreign agribusinesses to promote blackberry and raspberry production for export and hire primarily women as
berry pickers. Analysis focuses on the transition from a sugar economy where mostly men worked in the cane fields to non-traditional
agricultural exports when women entered agricultural waged labor in unprecedented numbers. This restructuring of the regional
economy raises important questions regarding the marginalization of differentiated subaltern groups and the nature of new
sets of power relations between transnational agribusinesses, berry growers, and waged workers. I analyze the contradictions
of this changing social field that connects Northern consumers, transnational company executives, berry growers, and waged
laborers in a web of differential power relations as they reverberate along the commodity chain from campesino households to the global market. 相似文献

Space-time distribution of the zooplankton (Rotifera, Cladocera and Copepoda) density along the central axis (horizontally and vertically) and the shores of La Concepción reservoir have been studied for one year. Results show that the distribution along the central axis and the shores follows similar patterns both in space and time. Rotifera and Copepoda mainly appear during the first part of the mixing period and Cladocera during stratification. Horizontal distribution is characterized by the occurrence of density gradients from the intake to the dam. Vertical distribution present density maximum at the Secchi depth during mixing and at two times Secchi depth, during stratification. Zooplankton distribution is related to physical-chemical and biotic factors. 相似文献

There are accumulating reports showing that the El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) has a significant effect on the population dynamics of marine fishes. However, the influence of ENSO on the physiology of fishes, as possible components of those ecological changes in fish populations, is not fully understood. This study investigated the cellular, physiological, and organismal stress responses in a wild fish population under natural thermal stress. The sea surface temperature at the subtropical ocean of Okinawa, Japan, was the highest in the last 10 years (>32°C) during the summer of 1998 with a strong ENSO. To examine the effects of those unusually warm ocean temperatures on fish, we compared tissue 70-kDa heat shock protein (HSP70) levels and growth rates between the ENSO summer of 1998 and the normal summer of 1999 in a common fish species in Okinawa, the Indo-Pacific sergeant, Abudefduf vaigiensis. We also conducted a complementary heat shock experiment in the laboratory. The field collected Indo-Pacific sergeant had significantly higher muscle HSP70 levels in 1998 than 1999. Higher muscle HSP70 and plasma cortisol levels were observed at 32°C than at 28°C in the laboratory heat shock experiment, indicating that the highest summer ocean temperature in 1998 was sufficient for the fish to up-regulate the cellular and physiological stress responses. In support of this effect, otoliths showed slower growth rates of the fish during the summer of 1998; this may reflect the significant energetic cost of these stress responses. 相似文献

Background
The Tehuacán Valley is one of the areas of Mesoamerica with the oldest history of plant management. Homegardens are among the most ancient management systems that currently provide economic benefits to people and are reservoirs of native biodiversity. Previous studies estimated that 30% of the plant richness of homegardens of the region are native plant species from wild populations. We studied in Náhuatl communities the proportion of native plant species maintained in homegardens, hypothesizing to find a proportion similar to that estimated at regional level, mainly plant resources maintained for edible, medicinal and ornamental purposes. Methods
We analysed the composition of plant species of homegardens and their similarity with surrounding Cloud Forest (CF), Tropical Rainforest (TRF), Tropical Dry forest (TDF), and Thorn-Scrub Forest (TSF). We determined density, frequency and biomass of plant species composing homegardens and forests through vegetation sampling of a total of 30 homegardens and nine plots of forests, and documented ethnobotanical information on use, management, and economic benefits from plants maintained in homegardens. Results
A total of 281 plant species was recorded with 12 use categories, 115 ornamental, 92 edible, and 50 medicinal plant species. We recorded 49.8 ± 23.2 (average ± S.D.) woody plant species (shrubs and trees) per homegarden. In total, 34% species are native to the Tehuacán Valley and nearly 16% are components of the surrounding forests. A total of 176 species were cultivated through seeds, vegetative propagules or transplanted entire individual plants, 71 tolerated, and 23 enhanced. The highest species richness and diversity were recorded in homegardens from the CF zone (199 species), followed by those from the TRF (157) and those from the TDF (141) zones. Conclusion
Homegardens provide a high diversity of resources for subsistence of local households and significantly contribute to conservation of native biodiversity. The highest diversity was recorded in homegardens where the neighbouring forests had the least diversity, suggesting that management of homegardens aims at compensating scarcity of naturally available plant resources. Cultivated species were markedly more abundant than plants under other management forms. Diversity harboured and management techniques make homegardens keystones in strategies for regional biodiversity conservation.13.

Cryptococcus neoformans, the etiological agent of cryptococcosis, has been associated with avian droppings and certain trees in different countries, including Colombia. C neoformans environmental isolates were obtained in urban areas in Bogotá, Colombia, and the strains recovered were phenotypically characterized. Attempts to determine the ecological conditions (micro- and macroclimatic) possibly related to their habitat were also undertaken. Four hundred and eighty samples from bark, soil around trunk bases, and detritus inside hollows of 32 trees were collected in three urban areas during a 5-month period, as well as 89 avian droppings samples from different places. Of plant samples, 6.7% collected from nine tree species yielded C. neoformans var. gattii, serotype B strains in 99% of the cases, and C. neoformans var. grubii, serotype A in 1%. The yeast was more frequently recovered from bark than from soil or detritus inside hollows, and from trees with hollows or rotted wood rather than from trees in which birds nest. C. neoformans was present with higher frequency and density in the rainy season than in the dry season; we found that slightly higher temperature and humidity values of the microhabitat, as compared to those of the environment, favored fungal occurrence, but the phenological state of the tree did not. Of dropping samples, 7.9% yielded C. neoformans strains, all of them C. neoformans var. grubii, serotype A. The yeast was obtained more frequently from dry droppings than from moist ones, but neither the sunlight exposure nor the site of collection of samples was correlated with this occurrence. Population density was significantly higher in droppings than in tree samples. Under laboratory conditions, isolates of different serotype showed similar capsular sizes. Water content and pH ranges were wide and did not show any significant difference between positive and negative samples. 相似文献

Two new wood types from the Late Cenozoic of the Ituzaingó Formation, La Plata Basin, Northeast Argentina add to our knowledge of South American Cenozoic plants. The materials were preserved by siliceous cellular permineralization, and they were prepared for microscopic examination by surface polishing and in thin sections. The anatomy of these new species was described. The relationship and comparison with the nearest living relatives (NLRs) are discussed. Maytenoxylon perforatum Franco gen. and sp. nov. is described as the first fossil wood referable to Celastraceae from South America. This new fossil species is related to extant Maytenus Molina. The other fossil twig, Ruprechtioxylon breae Franco sp. nov., has features of the Polygonaceae family and particularly resembles the extant specie Ruprechtia laxiflora Meisn. The occurrence of these fossil woods in south-eastern South America suggests that a relatively warm and dry to seasonally dry climate prevailed over this region of Gondwana during the Upper Cenozoic. It also provides new evidence for the hypothesis of the more wide distribution of Seasonally Dry Tropical Forest (SDTF) during the Upper Cenozoic. 相似文献

We examined annual variation in production, recruitment and density of the three most abundant vertebrate species of the River
Laxá at Lake Myvatn, Iceland: Barrow’s goldeneye, Bucephala islandica, harlequin duck, Histrionicus histrionicus, and brown trout, Salmo trutta, in relation to food resources and other environmental variables. The study is largely based on correlations from long-term
monitoring series in the period 1975–2002. Production of young in the harlequin duck was significantly correlated with food
resources (the blackfly, Simulium vittatum) of the river, as was the recruitment of brown trout to the angling stock. In Barrow’s goldeneye, which uses both the lake
and the river, dispersion of adults in spring and young in August was influenced by the availability of aquatic insects in
each habitat. The dispersion of Barrow’s goldeneye tracks the availability of aquatic insects in each of these two main habitats.
Introduced Amercian mink, Mustela vison, may have affected spring numbers and dispersion of harlequin ducks, but the evidence was not conclusive. Numbers of both
duck species and the trout (as CPUE) were relatively stable, although a sharp drop in numbers followed by slow recovery was
observed in Barrow’s goldeneye, and an increase was observed in harlequin ducks in the first year of study. 相似文献

Ethnobotanical information is presented on use, management, folk nomenclature and classification of the “xoconochtli” (Stenocereus stellatus) as well as on the role of this plant in subsistence of the Nahua, Mixtec and Popoloca peoples from the Tehuacán Valley and La Mixteca Baja in Central Mexico. Among all three groups, S. stellatus was used for various purposes but mainly for its edible fruits. Different variants of this species were distinguished, named and classified by indigenous people according to characteristics of the fruit; particularly size, color and flavor of the pulp, spininess and thickness of the peel. Wild plants characteristically had small red sour fruits with many spines and thick peel, while individuals selected for cultivation usually differed in one or more of these characters. Three general forms of interaction between people and this species were found: 1) gathering of useful products from the wild; 2) management of wild populations in situ which involves the sparing and enhancing of individuals with more desirable characteristics and the removal of others during clearance of the land for agriculture; and 3) cultivation, mainly in home gardens, by propagation of vegetative parts from desirable individuals. Fruit yields per individual and per population were measured and compared in wild, managed in situ and cultivated populations from the Tehuacán Valley and La Mixteca Baja. Wild and cultivated individuals from La Mixteca Baja yielded more than wild and cultivated individuals from the Tehuacán Valley. Within each region, fruit yields were similar in wild and managed in situ populations but significantly larger in cultivated populations. Forms of management of this plant species are discussed in terms of availability of products and demand for them in the local economy. 相似文献

Riparian vegetation performs important ecosystem functions, since it maintains regional biodiversity and provides a range of environmental services. However, anthropogenic activity, land use type, and edge effects are factors that modify the riparian species assemblage and properties. The present study analyzes the influence of adjacent land use on the structure and diversity of riparian vegetation in four hydrographic regions that form the watershed of the river Duero, in the state of Michoacán, Mexico. Using a survey of woody plants of dbh ≥ 2.5 cm in ten different 0.1 ha sites, we found that the average number of stems and individuals was lower under agricultural (AGR) and urban (URB) land use, compared to forested areas (FOR). The proportion of multistemmed plants differs among land uses: this value was greater in AGR than in the FOR and URB categories. This proportion also differed among the four hydrographic regions. The land use type FOR presented the highest alpha and beta diversity, with a high number of native species occurring only in areas defined by this land use. The results indicate that the category FOR plays an important role in the conservation of regional flora and is a possible source of germplasm for restoration programs in sites degraded by human disturbance. This study shows how anthropogenic activities affect riparian vegetation and highlights the importance of further study of this ecosystem to apply sustainable management strategies that are compatible with its conservation. 相似文献
