  • 1 Ants can have a range of effects on arthropods in crops, including suppressing herbivores such as caterpillars. However, ants can also increase hemipteran densities while reducing natural enemy numbers. In vineyard ecosystem, the effects of native ants and their interactions with other arthropods are poorly understood.
  • 2 An ant‐exclusion experiment was designed to test the impact of native ants on both canopy and ground arthropods concurrently. The potential influence of ants on predation and parasitism of light brown apple moth (LBAM) eggs, a grape pest, was also examined. Adult grapevine scale insects and earwigs under bark were counted after a season of ant‐exclusion.
  • 3 Among 23 ground ant species collected, six were found to forage in the canopy, with two Iridomyrmex species being the most commonly encountered.
  • 4 There was no difference in the abundance of most arthropod orders and feeding groups between ant‐excluded and control vines, although ground spiders were more abundant under ant‐excluded vines, despite increased ground ant foraging pressure. LBAM egg parasitism and predation were low and probably affected by weather and other arthropods. Ant exclusion did not reduce survival of scale insects, although the distribution and abundance of scale insects were negatively associated with earwigs.
  • 5 In conclusion, native ants did not consistently suppress arthropod assemblages, including natural enemies, and they did not promote the survival of scale insects. Interactions among native ant species within a vineyard might minimize their effects on other arthropods, although this needs further study.

Although mealybug transmission of Banana streak virus.(BSV) by Planococcus citri and Saccharicoccus sacchar has been demonstrated elsewhere, these mealybugs have not been identified on bananas in Uganda and their role and that of other agents in BSV transmission is not well documented. Insect samples were collected from banana farms in sites with low, moderate and high BSV infections in Uganda. Subsequently, live mealybugs and aphids were again collected and used in acquisition, retention and transmission tests, and BSV diagnosed using TAS‐ELISA. Dysmicoccus brevipes (pineapple mealybug), S. sacchari (sugarcane mealybug) and Pentalonia nigronervosa (banana aphid) were the most abundant insect species from banana fields sampled. Abundance of D. brevipes was positively and significantly correlated with BSV incidence unlike that of. P. nigronervosa. Transmission studies in the screenhouse showed that mealybugs acquired BSV one day after feeding on virus sources and approached optimum acquisition after the third day. Pineapple and sugarcane mealybugs retained BSV up to 5 days from the day of transfer from the virus source. BSV was first detected in the recipient banana plants 4 wk after transmission using pineapple mealybug and 6 wk after inoculation using sugarcane mealybug. Under screenhouse conditions, both mealybugs therefore appear to transmit BSV semipersistently.  相似文献

Abstract  Two new species of Tetracneminae, Encyrtidae, collected from Heilongjiang, Liaoning, and Yunnan, China are described, i.e. Dusmetia latiscapa Xu, sp. nov, and Gyranusoidea yunnanensis Xu, sp. nov. Dusmetia latiscapa Xu, sp. nov differs from Dusmetia cardinalis Hoffer, 1969 in the coloration of the apical forth funicular segment and the fifth-sixth funicular segments of antennae; (2) length of scape; (3) having undeveloped fore wing and (4) the coloration of body. Gyranusoidea yunnanensis Xu, sp. nov. can be distinguished from the Gyranusoidea hecale Noyes et Hayat 1988 by (1) 1 brown match between antennal scrobe and orbit; (2) scape 5.0 times as long as wide, and (3) antennal scape without white ring subapically. Both two genara of Dusmetia Mercet, and Gyranusoidea Compere are recorded for the first time in China. All specimens examined are deposited in Institute of Applied Entomology, Agriculture & Biotechnology College, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China.  相似文献

Encapsulation is a common defense mechanism exerted by a host insect in response to invasion by a metazoan parasitoid or other foreign organisms. In the process of encapsulation, the host forms a capsule around the parasitoid egg or larva, which is usually composed of host blood cells and the pigment melanin. The capsule may kill the parasitoid and thus prevent successful parasitism. Encapsulation may adversely affect the degree of biological control effected by parasitoids as it may either prevent the establishment of exotic parasitoids in new regions or reduce parasitoid efficacy. A high incidence of encapsulation may also cause difficulties in mass rearing of parasitoids. In the Coccoidea (Homoptera), parasitoid encapsulation has so far been recorded in three families: Coccidae (soft scale insects), Diaspididae (armored scale insects), and Pseudococcidae (mealybugs). Important factors that affect the frequency of parasitoid encapsulation in the Coccoidea include: Host and parasitoid species, the host's physiological age and physiological condition, the host origin (or strain), superparasitism, the rearing and/or ambient temperature, and the host plant. The effects of these factors on the incidence of parasitoid encapsulation in the Coccidae, Diaspididae, and Pseudococcidae are described.  相似文献

Habitat complexity is an important factor structuring local faunal assemblages. Many invasive plant species alter vegetation complexity because they are both functionally and structurally different from native flora. This study investigated the effects of an invasive grass (Andropogon gayanus Kunth.), which is invading undisturbed savannas in northern Australia. Although A. gayanus is a similar lifeform to that dominant in the native understory (i.e., a C4 grass), it is structurally different and significantly alters habitat complexity. We, therefore, hypothesized that there would be a substantial effect of the invasive grass on ant, spider, and other invertebrate assemblages. Contrary to our hypothesis, there was no effect of A. gayanus on ant species richness, abundance, or composition, nor were spiders or other invertebrates affected. Instead the change in weather conditions with season was more important in structuring the local invertebrate assemblages. Change in habitat complexity was most pronounced vertically, rather than horizontally at ground level, thus although there was a clear difference in the vertical structure between invaded and noninvaded habitats, the limited invertebrate response to different A. gayanus densities suggests some invertebrates are less sensitive to vertical changes in vegetation structure.  相似文献

The current status of coffee berry disease (CBD) caused by Colletotrichum kahawae was intensively assessed and examined in 152 sample coffee farms from 22 districts across major coffee growing regions of Ethiopia. The results showed that CBD was prevalent with significantly (p < 0.001) varied intensity of damage among fields, districts and zones. The highest disease incidence of 70.7, 65.3 and 59.3% was recorded in Hararghe, Gedeo and Jimma, with correspondingly higher severity of 42.7, 46.7 and 32.0%, respectively. The national average incidence and severity of CBD was 52.5 and 29.9% that indicated the present status of the disease is remarkably on increasing trend. The increased intensity of CBD was strongly associated with reduced disease management practices (r = 0.50), altitude (r = 0.42), coffee cultivars (r = 0.23) and production systems (r = 0.28). This empirical evidence shows that CBD is on an upsurge and remains a major challenge to Arabica coffee production in Ethiopia.  相似文献

The ecology of and biological control by multicoloured Asian ladybird beetle, Harmonia axyridis (Pallas) are reviewed. Our emphasis is on assembling and interpreting information on general characteristics, invasion and establishment, sexual activity, foraging and predation, development, survival and reproduction, predator-predator interactions, natural enemies, biocontrol, non-target effects and status of H. axyridis as a pest of fruits. Colonization of H. axyridis for aphid biocontrol in the USA have been successful in terms of its establishment, but its abundance is turning out to be a nuisance to humans. Its harmful non-target impact on beneficial organisms, humans and native species is becoming a debatable issue. The question on its present position, whether it is a biocontrol agent or pest, is a critical issue and discussed. Inferences from the empirical data are made and new avenues for future research are suggested.  相似文献

Polysaccharides were extracted from green Coffea arabica beans with water (90 °C, 1 h). Galactomannans were isolated from the water extract using preparative anion-exchange chromatography. Almost all of the galactomannans eluted in two neutral populations, while almost all of the arabinogalactans bound to the column, indicating that these arabinogalactans contain charged groups. Analysis of the molecular weight distribution of the two neutral populations showed that they differ in their molecular weight. Further characterization of these neutral populations by NMR and by MALDI-TOF MS after enzymatic degradation with an endo-mannanase, showed the presence of acetyl groups linked to the galactomannans, a feature not previously described for this type of polysaccharides from coffee beans. It was found that the high molecular weight (ca. 2000 kDa) neutral fraction was highly substituted both with galactose residues and acetyl groups, while the low molecular weight (ca. 20 kDa) population was much less substituted. Based on these results it can be concluded that at least two distinctly different populations of galactomannans are present in green coffee beans. It was also shown that the degradation of the galactomannans from green coffee beans with an endo-mannanase from A. niger is hindered by the presence of acetyl groups.  相似文献

Abstract

We investigated how insects use wax as a defence against visual predators, using a New Zealand salticid species, Marpissa marina, as the predator and Eriosoma lanigerum, an aphid that covers itself with wax, as the prey. For live‐prey testing, the predator was presented with two aphids, one with its wax covering intact and one with its wax removed. The predator ate more of the waxless than wax‐covered aphids. The predators were presented with two lures at a time: (1) one that was fully covered with wax (hid the aphid's head) compared with one that was without wax (waxless) or (2) one that was fully covered with wax compared with one that was only partially covered with wax (the head of the prey exposed), or (3) one that was waxless compared with one that was partially covered with wax. The predators stalked waxless prey more often than they stalked prey that was fully or partially covered with wax. When wax only partially covered the prey (i.e., when the prey's head was left exposed), the predator more often stalked than when the insect was fully covered. These findings suggest that the aphid's wax covering functions in part to hide prey‐identification cues from vision‐guided predators.  相似文献

  1. The African coffee white stem borer (CWSB) Monochamus leuconotus is a destructive pest of Arabica coffee in Africa. Documentation on outbreaks, spatiotemporal development and the relationship with different environmental conditions and coffee production system is limited.
  2. To underpin effective control measures, we studied aspects of local and regional pest drivers in Eastern Uganda.
  3. At the local scale, we (i) characterized the temporal development of CWSB and explored associations with environmental and shade‐related indicators. During two growing seasons and on 84 coffee plots, we recorded CWSB incidence/infestation and microclimate on an altitudinal gradient and different shading systems. The bimodal rainfall, altitude and shade affected CWSB development through their effect on minimum temperature.
  4. At the landscape level, we (ii) analyzed the spatial pattern of CWSB. Data on CWSB were collected on 180 plots. Pest incidence showed a spatial arrangement varying by districts. A possible relationship with human movement and the landscape context contributing to pest spread is suggested.
  5. CWSB control measures should be synchronized with the bimodal rainfall patterns and an emphasis should be given to identifying and limiting pathways of pest spread from highly infested to new areas.

Abstract 1. We examined the relative effects of the invasive Argentine ant, Linepithema humile, and a common native ant, Prenolepis imparis, on the community of herbivorous insects occurring on willow trees, Salix lasiolepis in Northern California, U.S.A. 2. Using paired control and treatment branches from which we excluded ants and other non‐volant predators, we found that effects of Argentine ants on the herbivore community were generally similar to those of P. imparis. Argentine ants and P. imparis suppressed the damage by skeletonising insects by 50%, but had little effect on most other external‐feeding or internal‐feeding guilds. 3. The abundance of aphids was 100% greater in the presence of Argentine ants, but there was no effect on aphid numbers in the presence of P. imparis. Late season aphid numbers were substantially higher in the presence of Argentine ants, but not P. imparis. 4. The effects of Argentine ants on skeletonising insects and aphids combined with the overwhelming abundance of Argentine ant workers, suggests that they may have substantial, but often overlooked, effects on the herbivore communities on other plant species in or near riparian habitats in which they invade.  相似文献

Atta bisphaerica is a species of grass-cutting ants commonly found in the Cerrado biome. The Brazilian Cerrado (savanna) biome covers 2 million km representing 23% of the area of the country. It is an ancient biome with rich biodiversity, estimated at 160,000 species of plants, fungi and animals. However, little is known about their nest architecture development. This study investigated the architecture of fourteen A. bisphaerica nests from Botucatu, São Paulo, Brazil. Molds were made of the nests by filling them with cement to allow better visualization of internal structures such as chambers and tunnels. After excavation, the depth and dimensions (length, width, and height) of the chambers were measured. As expected, there was a lateral development in the nests and increase in the number of chambers over time. Results showed that in nests with an estimated age of 14 months, the average depth was 1.6 ± 0.4 m; for those with 18 months it was 2.2 ± 0.7 m and at 28 months it was 2.5 ± 0.7 m. The number of chambers varied from 4 to 7 in 28-month nests, 2 to 4 in 18-month nests, and from 2 to 3 in 14-month nests. With respect to the dimensions of the internal tunnels, there were variations in their average width, increasing with time. The fungus chambers were located beneath the largest mound of loose soil. This study contributes to a better understanding of the so far unknown nest architecture development of A. bisphaerica grass-cutting ants.  相似文献

This study evaluated the thermal requirements for development of the cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis depending on different biological parameters on Okra leaves Abelmoschus esculentusat under two constant temperatures (20 and 30 °C) at (RH 65%, 12:12 h. light/dark). The effect of temperature on eggs was ineffective since it hatched shortly to first nymphal instars after deposition. While the tested temperature caused significant effects on nymphal durations, pupation rate (pre-male stage), females emergence %, pre-oviposition, longevity, post-oviposition periods and fecundity in females (egg deposition, ovisacs numbers and hatchability %). The thermal constant and developmental zero were calculated to be 7.29 °C and 79.9 degree-days (DDs) for eggs, 11.67 °C and 272.9 DDs for nymphal stages, 11.06 °C and 46.4 DDs for males and then 3.31 °C and 554.1 DDs for females, respectively. The duration of the life cycle was 65.6 ± 10.36 days at 20 °C; this was shortened to 35.51 ± 1.12 days at 30 °C. The thermal requirements to complete the insect development for one generation was 8.2 °C for the developmental zero and 774.1 DDs for the thermal constant. Based on the thermal requirements values, the average life cycle duration from January to December 2016 was 61.78 days and the number of annual generations was 7.143 when the average annual temperature was 23.29 °C.  相似文献

Spalgis epius is an economically important hemipterophagous butterfly. Detailed information on the population dynamics, natural enemies, and prey range of S. epius and its association with mealybug-attendant ant species is lacking. Three years of field studies conducted at Bangalore University campus, Bengaluru, India on these aspects indicated that the population density of S. epius was greatest from June to December and least from February to May in the low land region. S. epius survived on eight prey species, which were present in different months, of which Phenacoccus indicus was recorded as a prey of S. epius for the first time. Different prey species occurred on 12 species of host plants. The occurrence of S. epius was negatively correlated with temperature and positively correlated with relative humidity and prey populations. Six mealybug-attendant ant species were associated with the larvae of S. epius. The seven general predators of S. epius adults were recorded. Knowledge on the population dynamics and a prey range of S. epius and its interaction with mealybug-attendant ant species could be helpful to using this predator as a major biocontrol agent of various species of mealybugs. This study contributed to our understanding of the population dynamics of a hemipterophagous butterfly.  相似文献

  • 1 The mutualism between wood ants of the Formica rufa group and aphids living in the canopy of trees is a widespread phenomenon in boreal forests, and it can affect tree growth. However, not all trees in the forest are involved in this interaction.
  • 2 To assess the incidence of host trees involved in this ant–aphid mutualism and its spatial distribution in boreal forests, we inventoried sample plots with a radius of 10–15 m around wood ant mounds in 12 forest stands of two age classes (5–12‐year‐old sapling stands and 30–45‐year‐old pole stands) and two dominant tree species (Scots pine and silver birch) in Eastern Finland from 2007 to 2009.
  • 3 The proportion of trees visited by ants out of all trees on the individual study plots were in the range 4–62%, and 1.5–39% of the trees on the plots were consistently visited by ants during all 3 years. The percentage of host trees increased with the ant mound base area on the plots. Trees visited by ants were larger and closer to the mound than trees not visited by ants. Within the group of visited trees, more ants were found on bigger trees and on trees close to the ant mounds.
  • 4 Extrapolated from plot to stand level, we estimated that 0.5–6.6% of the trees were host trees in at least one of the three study years, and that only 0.01–2.3% of all the trees were consistently visited by ants during all 3 years. It is concluded that ant–aphid mutualism is a minor occurrence at the stand level.

Organisms use an amazingly large diversity of mechanisms to pass on their genes to the next generation. Sex is ancestral in eukaryotes, where it remains the most widespread way of reproduction. By combining one's genes with those of a partner, sex entails a dilution of one's genes at each generation. Evolution has been particularly creative in devising mechanisms allowing females to avoid this dilution, from classical parthenogenesis to the elimination of male genes after fertilization (Bell, 1982). Moreover, the term parthenogenesis includes various forms. Parthenogenesis can be used for female (thelytoky) or male (arrhenotoky) production and it can be associated with different cytological mechanisms, from strict clonality to meiotic division with the fusion of two of the four products of meiosis to restore diploidy (Suomalainen, Saura, & Lokki, 1987). Understanding the evolution of these diverse reproductive systems remains one of the most exciting and longstanding questions in evolutionary biology. By characterizing the reproductive systems of 11 species from the thermophilic ant genus Cataglyphis, in this issue of Molecular Ecology, Kuhn, Darras, Paknia, and Aron (2020) show the high lability of parthenogenesis, with multiple independent evolution of facultative thelytoky from sexual ancestors. The diversity of life history traits and social characteristics of this genus (e.g., mode of colony foundation, female polyandry) provides a unique and exciting opportunity to investigate the social and environmental factors driving the evolution of reproductive systems in social Hymenoptera.  相似文献

Neural mechanisms in insect navigation: polarization compass and odometer   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Insect navigation relies on path integration, a procedure by which information about compass bearings pursued and distances travelled are combined to calculate position. Three neural levels of the polarization compass, which uses the polarization of skylight as a reference, have been analyzed in orthopteran insects. A group of dorsally directed, highly specialized ommatidia serve as polarization sensors. Polarization-opponent neurons in the optic lobe condition the polarization signal by removing unreliable and irrelevant components of the celestial stimulus. Neurons found in the central complex of the brain possibly represent elements of the compass output. The odometer for measuring travelling distances in honeybees relies on optic flow experienced during flight, whereas desert ants most probably use proprioreceptive cues.  相似文献
