Bistrifluron, a benzoylphenylurea compound, was evaluated with regard to its efficacy against workers of Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) by using three laboratory tests. In the no-choice feeding test, the mortality of bistrifluron-treated worker termites was significantly higher than that of termites exposed to the same concentrations of hexaflumuron (e.g., 6 wk at 500 ppm, 4 wk at 5,000 ppm, and 2 wk at 50,000 ppm) and untreated controls. Bistrifluron showed higher dose dependence and a faster speed of action than hexaflumuron. Both bistrifluron and hexaflumuron had feeding-deterrent effects at 5,000 ppm in the two-choice feeding test, although the mortality of worker termites exposed to bistrifluron or hexaflumuron at 5,000 ppm was not significantly different from untreated controls. In the allogrooming inhibition test, to examine effects of bistrifluron on allogrooming behavior of termites, termite movement was affected at 1 wk before termites died when exposed to 5,000 ppm bistrifluron. These results indicate bistrifluron is effective as a bait toxicant at 5,000 ppm; however, bistrifluron may cause some feeding repellency at > or = 5,000 ppm.  相似文献

A benzoylphenylurea insect growth regulator with the common name noviflumuron was evaluated for use as a baiting toxicant against the eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar). Noviflumuron demonstrated significantly greater potency and faster speed of action compared with the commercial standard hexaflumuron. In addition, noviflumuron was not a feeding deterrent on filter paper at concentrations of up to 10,000 ppm. The rates of uptake, clearance, and insect-to-insect transfer of [14C] noviflumuron were measured in R. flavipes in laboratory assays and compared with those previously reported for [14C]hexaflumuron. Under a continuous exposure regime, the uptake profile for noviflumuron was similar to that for hexaflumuron, although the time period of maximal uptake was shorter for noviflumuron. Noviflumuron was cleared from termites in a first order process with a half-life of approximately 29 d, whereas the half-life of hexaflumuron was much shorter (8-9 d). Noviflumuron was efficiently transferred from treated to untreated termites by trophallaxis via kinetics similar to those reported for hexaflumuron; however, the systemic dose of noviflumuron required to result in toxicity of R. flavipes was found to be at least two- to three-fold less than that of hexaflumuron. The faster activity of noviflumuron compared with hexaflumuron in R. flavipes can be at least partially explained by the combination of slower clearance and greater intrinsic activity.  相似文献

Western subterranean termite, Reticulitermes hesperus Banks (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), workers fed more on paper disks treated with the carbohydrates xylose, ribose, and fructose than on untreated disks. This feeding behavior of termites for certain carbohydrates was used to demonstrate an increase in the uptake and transfer of the insect growth regulator hexaflumuron among termites. The addition of 3% xylose to paper disks significantly increased the uptake of [14C]hexaflumuron and its subsequent transfer to other termites. Similarly, there was a significant increase in mortality of termites fed on paper disks treated with [14C]hexaflumuron (0.1 and 0.5%) in combination with 3% xylose for similar time periods compared with termites feeding on [14C]hexaflumuron (0.1 and 0.5%) alone. Overall percentage of mortality of termites feeding on [14C]hexaflumuron in combination with 3% xylose during the duration of the study (25-30 d) was approximately equal to 70%.  相似文献

Ovicidal activity of the benzoylphenylurea noviflumuron was evaluated in the laboratory on three adult groups (virgin females, virgin males, and fertilized, nongravid females) of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), through ingestion of treated bait. Novifumuron caused significant ovicidal effects at concentrations ranging from 10 to 5000 ppm after 5-d feeding exposure to virgin and fertilized females. Untreated females produced little or no viable oothecae when mated with virgin males that had previously ingested bait (5-d exposure) with 1000 ppm or 5000 ppm noviflumuron. The highest tested concentration of noviflumuron (5000 ppm) caused 100% ovicidal activity through two ovarian cycles for all three adult groups. Noviflumuron seems to have broader ovicidal activity against B. germanica than reported for other benzoylphenylurea insecticides and can potentially impact cockroach populations through a combination of nymphal mortality and ovicidal activity.  相似文献

The feeding preferences of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, for commercial lumber Alaska yellow cedar, Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach; yellow birch, Betula alleghaniensis Britton; northern red oak, Quercus rubra L.; redwood, Sequoia sempervirers (D. Don) Endl; and spruce (Picea spp.) were examined to determine whether the presence of the lignin-degrading basidiomycete Marasmiellus troyanus (Murrill) Singer could alter the relative preference of termites for these wood species. In paired choice tests with fungus-inoculated sawdust versus control sawdust, termites showed a strong preference for the fungus-inoculated sawdust for all wood species tested, except for Alaska yellow cedar. In a multiple-choice test using sawdust without fungus, termites showed a very strong preference for red oak sawdust over the other three species. In a paired choice test using fungus-inoculated sawdust, termites showed a preference for redwood over red oak sawdust. In a feeding test using autoclaved wood blocks without fungal decay, there was no difference in termite consumption of birch, red oak, or redwood. The relative preference of termites for redwood increased when blocks were decayed by M. troyanus for 3 and 8 wk. These results indicate that chemical modifications due to fungal decay affected the feeding preference of termites for different commercial lumber.  相似文献

Distance effects of three treatments, noviflumuron, fipronil, and thiamethoxam, against laboratory populations of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermesformosanus Shiraki, were tested in extended foraging arenas with foraging distances of 50 m. The results showed that during the 10-wk test period, all termites were killed by noviflumuron baits, whereas the nonrepellent termiticides fipronil and thiamethoxam divided the laboratory populations into two groups after causing 25-35% worker mortality. The horizontal transfer of lethal effects of fipronil was < or = 5 m. For thiamethoxam, the distance of transfer was substantially shorter. Because of their dose-dependent lethal time, the nonrepellent termiticides did not fulfill the requirements of a liquid bait model.  相似文献

Cellulosic bait matrices containing 0.5% hexaflumuron were tested against field colonies of the subterranean termite Coptotermes curvignathus Holmgren in Malaysia. Foraging activities of the termites were first monitored for several months by using survey stakes and wood bundles placed in underground monitoring traps. Infested stakes were replaced with bait devices. Termite workers to act as recruits were collected from infested stakes and placed in the bait devices. Subsequent activities of the termites were monitored by examining and weighing the wood in the monitoring traps. Data show that the four colonies had populations of 166,288-709,052 foragers and mean wood consumption rates of 305.9-508.2 g/mo per trap. These colonies ceased their activities at all monitoring devices 25-44 d after baiting had commenced. Colonies consumed approximately 27-79 g of bait matrix or 137.5-395 mg of hexaflumuron. Thus, C. curvignathus colonies could be monitored, characterized, baited, and foraging eliminated by using a bait matrix containing hexaflumuron.  相似文献

Few studies have focused on interactions between subterranean termites and the ophiostomatoid fungal associates of pine bark beetles or root feeding weevils. Field stake tests were employed at four locations throughout Mississippi to determine the feeding preference of subterranean termites for blue-stained, unstained, and partially decayed southern pine sapwood stakes. This study also utilized wood decayed by Gloeophyllum trabeum, a fungus previously shown to elicit a positive subterranean termite feeding response, as a positive control. Stakes inoculated with G. trabeum received significantly more attacks than all other treatments after 16 weeks. Of the stakes attacked by subterranean termites, stakes inoculated with Ophiostoma minus were degraded faster than any other treatment. Subterranean termite preference for stakes treated with either of two Leptographium spp. and the untreated negative controls did not differ; however, each was fed upon less than all other treatments. The feeding rate on stakes inoculated with O. ips and G. trabeum being fed upon by subterranean termites was not significantly different. These results represent the first evidence of wood containing non-structurally degrading fungi (O. ips and O. minus) eliciting a feeding preference from subterranean termites greater than that of decayed wood. The implications of these results are particularly relevant to pine forest ecology, nutrient cycling, subterranean termite control, and the utilization of blue-stained southern pine building products in the southeastern U.S.  相似文献

Surprisingly little research has been conducted to investigate interactions between subterranean termites and bark beetles. Facilitative interactions between these organisms could easily alter stand dynamics and impact wood utilization strategies. A series of American Wood Protection Association Standard E1-09 “choice tests” were carried out to determine the feeding preference of Reticulitermes flavipes Kollar (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) for blue-stained sapwood and sapwood impregnated with various bark beetle pheromones. Reticulitermes flavipes exhibited a feeding preference for both air-dried and kiln-dried blue-stained sapwood, unstained sapwood treated with frontalin, and air-dried blue-stained sapwood treated with a 0.02% solution of both frontalin and endo-brevicomin. The implications of these results are far reaching, with particular relevance to forest health, ecology, and utilization.  相似文献

Four different termite control strategies consisting of two soil treatments with cypermethrin and fipronil and two bait treatments with hexaflumuron and sulfluramid were evaluated for their efficacy and potential for controlling the invasive eastern subterranean termite, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), in Quillota and Valparaiso, Chile. Monitoring stations were installed at all sites to measure the overall termite activity next to and at distances up to 30 m away from infested structures, most being 3-5 m. Foraging activity was extremely seasonal with the maximum consumption rates occurring from January to April. Termite foraging activity was low from July to September. After treatments in January 2003, there was a significant decrease in wood consumption, percentage of active stations, and numbers of termites in traps for the first 6 mo with hexaflumuron baits. No significant change in R. flavipes foraging activity was observed on wood consumption and percentage of active stations for sulfluramid bait or cypermethrin and fipronil soils treatments. The seasonal pattern of foraging activity remained unchanged for all treatments in 2004 and 2005, except structures baited with hexaflumuron. Feeding activity at the monitors in the area surrounding the hexaflumuron baits declined to 0 after January 2004. Alate flights occurred in approximately 38% of the structures treated with cypermethrin and sulfluramid bait in 2003 and in approximately 40% of the structures treated with cypermethrin, fipronil, and sulfluramid bait in 2004. Sulfluramid baits and cypermethrin soil treatments did not have any impact within a 15-m radius of the structures. Soils treatments of fipronil and cypermethrin prevented termites access in 75% of the homes. The number of active monitoring stations only declined within 2 m of the fipronil-treated zone. Hexaflumuron exhibited a reduction in activity for at least a 15-m radius.  相似文献

The symbiotic microorganisms in the gut of termites play a key role in the digestion of cellulose and nitrogen metabolism. Therefore, disruption of these symbioses activity can open a door toward termite management. Thus, the current study aimed to exploit termite gut bacterial capacity in order to utilize it for efficient termite control. So, in the current study, gut bacteria of Microcerotermes diversus have been extracted, cultivated on both liquid and solid media, and screened with a range of antibiotics to find the most effective antibiotics. Results showed that chloramphenicol and nalidixic acid were the most effective antibiotics in preventing the colony unit formation of the gut bacteria amongst 16 antibiotics tested. Also, from two chitin synthesis inhibitors tested hexaflumuron with an LC50 of 613.9 µg ml−1 was more toxic than lufenuron with an LC50 of 1414.5 µg ml−1. Thus, two antibiotics (chloramphenicol and nalidixic acid) were used simultaneously with a sub-lethal concentration of hexaflumuron against the termite and a variety of factors such as wood consumption rate, running speed, body water content, and tunneling activity were evaluated under laboratory conditions. Results showed that the combination of these two antibiotics (chloramphenicol and nalidixic acid) with hexaflumuron caused a significant decrease in termite consumption rate, running speed, and tunneling behavior, but didn’t affect the body water contents of termites. These results suggest that using a combination of antibiotic/s and hexaflumuron is a promising management practice to get a suitable control measure for the studied termite.  相似文献

Fire is an important part of forest ecosystems, as is the insect fauna. Changes in wood brought about by fire may alter the ability of termites to use the wood, interrupting the decay cycle of woody debris. The ability of termites to find, infest, and feed upon wood after it had been charred was evaluated in the laboratory and field. Eastern subterranean termites, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar) (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), fed on char from burned wood had significantly reduced numbers of protozoa compared to termites fed on pine shavings, but significantly more than starved termites. The ability of termites to find and infest wood was not affected by surface charring. In a laboratory choice test, there were no significant differences in the onset of feeding by termites between charred and non‐charred wood boards. Likewise in the field, no differences were observed in the time to initial attack by termites on charred and non‐charred wood boards or bolts. Because termites will likely survive fires of low to moderate intensity, in most cases, there should be no disruption of the termite contribution to forest nutrient and carbon cycles.  相似文献

The feeding and attraction of Agelastica coerulea (Baly) to nine species of Betulaceae in four genera (Alnus, Betula, Carpinus, and Corylus) were examined in the laboratory by using choice and no-choice as well as olfactometer bioassays. In no-choice feeding bioassays with A. coerulea larvae, Alnus hirsuta (Spach) Ruprecht, Alnus japonica Steudel, Corylus sieboldiana variety mandshurica (Max.) c. k. Schneider, and Corylus heterophylla variety thunbergii Blume were the most preferred, whereas Betula davurica Pallas, Betula schmidtii Regel, and Carpinus cordata Blume were the least preferred. The larvae showed moderate preference for Alnus maximowiczii Callier and Carpinus tschonoskii variety brevicalycina Nakai. In choice feeding bioassays, no differences in preference between A. hirsuta and A. japonica were observed. However, there were significant differences in preference between A. hirsuta and each of the other seven plant species. In olfactometer bioassays with adult female A. coerulea, fresh leaf odor from A. hirsuta attracted significantly more adults than that from A. japonica and C. sieboldiana variety mandshurica. These results indicate that A. coerulea differed in its ability to discriminate among the Betulaceae plants at the feeding preference and attraction of host selection.  相似文献

The feeding preferences of the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki, were tested in three separate experiments on 28 different wood species. Experiment 1 was a multiple-choice test designed to test relative preferences among 24 wood species commercially available in New Orleans, LA. Experiment 2 was a similar study designed to test relative preferences among 21 wood species shown or reported to be unpalatable to the Formosan subterranean termite. Experiment 3 was a no-choice test to examine the feeding deterrence of the 10 least preferred wood species. Preference was determined by consumption rates. Birch (Betula alleghaniensis Britton), red gum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.), Parana pine [Araucaria angustifolia (Bert.) 1, sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), pecan (Carya illinoensis Wangenh.), and northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) were the most preferred species by C. formosanus in order of consumption rate. All of these species were significantly more preferred than southern yellow pine (Pinus taeda L.), widely used for monitoring. Sinker cypress [ = old growth bald cypress, Taxodium distichum (L.)], western red cedar (Thuja plicata Donn), Alaskan yellow cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis D. Don), eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana L.), sassafras [Sassafras albidum (Nutt.)], Spanish cedar (Cedrella odorata L.), Honduras mahogany (Swietenia macrophyla King), Indian rosewood (Dalbergia latifolia Roxb.), Honduras rosewood (D. stevensonii Standl.), and morado (Machaerium sp.) induced significant feeding deterrence and mortality to C. formosanus. The last eight species produced 100% mortality after 3 mo.  相似文献

The rates of uptake, clearance, insect-to-insect transfer, and metabolism of [14C] hexaflumuron [N-(((3,5-dichloro-4-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluroethoxy)phenyl)- amino)carbonyl)-2,6-diflurobenzamide] were measured in eastern subterranean termite workers, Reticulitermes flavipes (Kollar), fed cellulose diets containing either 0.1 or 0.5% (wt:wt) hexaflumuron. The rate of uptake, level of maximum uptake, and amount of insect-to-insect transfer were concentration dependent. The clearance rate constant for hexaflumuron was independent of concentration, with a mean value of 3.2 x 10(-3)/h. This corresponds to a mean half-life for hexaflumuron inside termites of 9 d. No evidence of metabolism of hexaflumuron to additional products was detected when extracting and examining the radioactivity contained in the fecal and regurgitated material within the termite holding apparatus 40 d after exposure to the chemical. Hexaflumuron was efficiently transferred from treated to untreated termites, through trophallaxis, resulting in spread of the toxicant throughout the insect population. The combination of uptake and efficient transfer of hexaflumuron between treated and untreated termites ensures broad distribution of the material even to insects not directly exposed to the toxicant. The distribution of hexaflumuron by termite workers, along with their minimal ability to metabolize the compound to other metabolites, and their slow ability to clear the material from the termite population results in death of the entire group of termites contained within the holding apparatus.  相似文献

Using a quarterly (3-mo) monitoring and bait-replenishment interval, 122 subterranean termite colonies throughout the United States were baited with a refined cellulose bait matrix containing 0.5% noviflumuron. All colonies were eliminated in less than 1 yr after initiation of baiting as determined by long-term monitoring and genetic markers. Sixty-three percent of the colonies were eliminated during the first quarter after the initiation of baiting and 77% of colonies were eliminated after consuming two bait tubes or less. This suggests that a single baiting cycle and bait installed in response to a single active monitoring device were sufficient to eliminate the majority of colonies. Although termites temporarily abandoned stations after depleting bait, workers resumed feeding when baits were replenished. Colonies that consumed large amounts of bait before elimination foraged into multiple stations, thus allowing adequate amounts of bait to sustain feeding. The time to eliminate termite colonies with bait replenished quarterly was similar to that previously reported for laminated cellulose bait replenished monthly. Our data support the conclusion that extending the bait replenishment interval from monthly to quarterly for bait tubes with refined cellulose containing 0.5% noviflumuron did not adversely impact colony elimination.  相似文献

Trees of newly acquired Ulmus species originating from the temperate regions of China and growing at The Morton Arboretum, Lisle, IL, were evaluated in no-choice and multiple-choice laboratory bioassays and cage-studies for feeding preference for adults of the Japanese beetle, Popillia japonica Newman. Ulmus lanceaefolia, U. prunifolia, U. pseudopropinqua, and U. taihangshanensis were less preferred for feeding by adult Japanese beetles. No-choice, multiple-choice, and cage feeding studies revealed that Ulmus wallichiana was moderately preferred, and U. procera and U. americana were highly preferred for feeding. Dry fecal pellet weights were strongly correlated with the percent of leaf tissue removed. Feeding preference in the multiple-choice study was strongly correlated with feeding preference in the cage study and in the no-choice study. Likewise, adult feeding preference in the cage study was strongly correlated with preference in the multiple-choice and no-choice studies. The less preferred species of U. lanceafolia, U. prunifolia, U. pseudopropinqua, and U. taihangshanensis show promise for future elm breeding programs.  相似文献

In the interest of developing interventions to infestations by Formosan subterranean termites, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), several rare sugars were tested for effects on the termites and symbionts. Among these, the D-galactose analog, 2-deoxy-D-galactose (2deoxyGal) showed promise as a potential control chemical. At a test concentration of 2deoxyGal (320.4 microg/mm3) in water applied to 5-cm filter paper, in bioassays with 20 termite workers, we found that worker termite mortality was significantly affected over a 2-wk period. Subsequent dose-mortality feeding studies confirmed these findings. In addition, consumption of the sugar-treated filter paper by termites caused a significant decrease in hindgut protozoan populations. 2deoxyGal caused dose-dependent termite mortality, taking on average 1 wk to begin killing workers, indicating that it may have promise as a delayed action toxin, which, if added to baits, could allow time after bait discovery for an entire colony to be affected.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of Summon Preferred Food Source on feeding, tunneling, and bait station discovery by the Formosan subterranean termite, Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki. Bioassays were conducted to determine whether Summon disks affected the aggregation and feeding behavior of termites and to determine whether the presence of Summon disks caused increased recruitment of termites to wood blocks. When termites encountered the disk, they immediately clustered on top of the disk. Termites were observed aggregating on top of the disk throughout the experiment. Consumption of Summon disks was significantly greater than consumption of cardboard disks in paired choice tests. The presence of a Summon disk on top of a wood block caused a significant increase in consumption of the wood block. Bioassays also were conducted to determine whether water extracts of Summon disks affected termite behavior. Consumption of filter paper disks treated with a water extract of Summon disks was significantly greater than consumption of control filter paper disks. Termites tunneled through sand treated with a water extract of Summon disks faster than they tunneled through untreated sand. In a field test, the rate of infestation of monitoring stations with a Summon disk was 3 times greater than the rate of infestations of stations without a disk.
