The breeding system of the Greater Rhea Rhea americana is almost unique among birds as it combines harem polygyny and sequential polyandry, with communal egg-laying and uniparental male care. In this species, large communal clutches (more than 30 eggs) are rare and have a lower hatching success than smaller clutches. Here we analyse the proximate causes of hatching failures and the costs of large communal clutches (and therefore the costs of extensive polygyny) for males and females. We evaluated if length of the nesting period, egg viability, egg losses during incubation and male parental activity at the nest were affected by clutch size. We also evaluated if chicks hatched from large clutches have a lower survival during the first 2 months after hatching. Large clutches had longer nesting period and lower hatching success, mainly as a result of bacterial contamination of the eggs and increased hatching asynchrony. In addition, large clutches tended to lose more eggs as a result of accidental breakage or predation. Male activity at the nest and chick survival were not related to clutch size. Low hatching success, nest predation risk and energetic costs associated with large clutches penalize females that join large harems and males that accept additional eggs into the nest.  相似文献

Some Red-legged Partridge females lay two clutches in separate nests, one immediately after the other, which are incubated separately by the male and female of the pair. Pairs remained together during the laying of both clutches so that there were delays between the end of laving and incubation at the first nests. Incubation of the two nests began at approximately the same time but discrepancies of up to ten days occurred. Males incubated first clutches and females usually the second, but probably the first if the second was destroyed during laying. The proportion of surviving eggs which hatched was similar in first and second clutches but declined if the delay between laying and hatching was exceptionally long.
Yearling females began laying late and few seemed to attempt two clutches compared with older females of which 60–80% showed the double nesting habit. A model predicting reproductive success for both sexes in relation to the rate of nest predation during laying, suggested that attempting two clutches rather than one would be disadvantageous at high predation rates. Females would produce more young if their mates incubated their first clutch immediately it was complete rather than accompanying them during the laying of the second. However, males may benefit by this delay, even though it exposes the nest to predators for a longer time, because they are able to guard their mate and prevent other males from mating with her and fertilizing eggs of her second clutch.  相似文献

The Ostrich communal breeding system involves several females laying in a single nest. Only the ‘major’ female and the territorial male, however, provide parental care from incubation to fledging of chicks. Eggs are turned and displaced frequently upon the onset of incubation, and the major female evicts excess eggs out of the nest when the number of eggs is above a specific threshold level. A previous study indicated that the major female ostrich recognises her own eggs and selectively evicts eggs of minor females based on size, shape and shell texture. Our aim was to investigate if accepted and ejected eggs differ in colour characteristics. We quantified colour by measuring egg reflectance spectra, which were subsequently analysed using a visual model approach. Within clutches, there were no significant differences in colour between accepted and ejected eggs. These results suggest that female ostriches do not discriminate against foreign eggs based on deviations in colour.  相似文献

1. In many reptile species, females oviposit communally (i.e. many clutches are laid within the same nest). This behaviour might result from constraint (scarcity of nest-sites offering suitable incubation conditions) or adaptation (direct fitness benefits accruing from the proximity of other eggs). 2. To test between these alternatives, we gathered field and laboratory data on montane scincid lizards Bassiana duperreyi from south-eastern Australia. Our data support the adaptationist hypothesis. 3. In the field, communal vs. solitary clutches were laid in similar sites, and the relative frequency of communal nesting was not predictable from nest-site availability. Thermal regimes for incubation did not differ between communal vs. solitary nests, nor between eggs at the core vs. periphery of a communal nest. In the laboratory, females selectively oviposited beside existing eggs rather than in otherwise identical potential nesting sites. 4. From cycling-temperature incubation in the laboratory, eggs incubated within a cluster of other eggs took up less water, but produced hatchlings that were larger and faster-running than were hatchlings from eggs incubated alone. 5. Hydric modifications of incubation conditions within a cluster of tightly packed eggs thus may provide a direct fitness benefit to communal oviposition.  相似文献

Variation of maternal androgens in avian eggs may be a mechanism of maternal influence on offspring development, growth, and/or behavior. We studied yolk androgen concentrations in eggs of guira cuckoos (Guira guira) to understand how females might enhance the success of offspring in a complex communal breeding system. We measured concentrations of androstenedione, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, and testosterone in yolks and identified eggs and clutches of individuals in joint nests by yolk protein electrophoresis. Androstenedione had the highest yolk concentration, at least 10 times higher than that of testosterone and 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone. The first eggs of individual females that laid two or three eggs in a joint nest had lower androstenedione concentrations than their second and third eggs, the latter having a lower probability of being ejected from the nest. This implies that guira cuckoo females may influence offspring survival and competitiveness in communal nests by means of differential allocation of androstenedione and laying tactics. There was significant variation in yolk androstenedione among females, but the order in which females entered laying in the communal clutch had no effect on the concentrations. Androstenedione yolk concentrations increased with communal clutch size, which may indicate that higher levels of competition in larger groups lead to higher yolk androgen concentrations. Finally, androstenedione concentrations were higher in clutches in the later wetter periods of the rainy season than during the earlier drier period. This may be explained by the high frequency of large clutches in the later periods, with more females contributing to a joint clutch.  相似文献

The expression and maintenance of maternal behavior in the earwig,Euborellia annulipes, was examined through manipulation of clutch size, age, and species and through observations of interactions between brooding females. Females underwent discrete gonadotrophic cycles culminating in oviposition of first clutches that were highly variable in size. Neither the head capsule width nor the age of the mother was correlated with clutch size. Maternal care extended through embryogenesis and for the week following hatching. Clutch removal significantly shortened the interclutch interval, indicating that the presence of brood inhibited the onset of the second gonadotrophic cycle. Brooding females readily accepted replacement clutches of the same age. Thus, mothers did not appear to distinguish their own eggs from those of other females. Experimental doubling of clutch size did not significantly reduce the proportion hatching or fledging. In contrast, reducing clutch size diminished the percentage successfully fledging. Manipulation of clutch age resulted in reduced hatching/fledging success. Placing two females, each with newly laid clutches, in the same cage usually resulted in egg transfer from the nest of one female to that of the other within 12 h. Nests of females with larger forceps were significantly more likely to contain both clutches. When mothers with first clutches were paired with mothers with third clutches, eggs were more likely to be transferred to the nest of the older female.E. annulipes females with newly laid clutches appeared to accept as replacement clutches eggs of the earwigDoru taeniatum. Biochemical genetic markers were used along with conventional methods (abnormal laying sequence/clutch size, unusual egg shape/pigmentation) to identify intraspecific nest parasitism at two British nestbox colonies of the European starling. Between 11 and 37% of first clutches were parasitized during 1977–1979. Parasitic females probably comprised all of the following categories: (1) paired females contesting a nestbox occupied by another pair; (2) previously paired females who had laid a clutch but had been unsuccessful; (3) unpaired females who had copulated with males that already had a mate and nest site; and (4) ‘professional’ nest parasites who distributed at lest some of their eggs in one or more nests other than their own. Although parasitized nests had higher clutch sizes, parasitism led to fewer host young fledging per egg laid, mainly through the eviction of eggs and subsequent nest desertion. Number of parasitic young fledged per egg laid was highest when eggs were laid synchronously with the host, when host clutches were larger, or a smaller number of parasite eggs were added to a nest, thus favouring parasites that distribute their eggs amongst a number of nests. A greater pressure on nest sites may have accounted for the higher levels of parasitism at the Aberdeen colony and for the greater number of parasite eggs laid in a nest. Although most parasitic female starlings appeared to be much less successful than non-parasitic ones, nest parasitism in the starling might evolve directly when one or more of the following advantages are present. (1) There are no constraints on the number of eggs a female may lay but there are constraints on the number of young she may feed adequately. (2) Female survival is increased by having fewer or no eggs/young to care for. (3) Current feeding conditions favour the survival of more young than would be produced by the most common clutch size. The mating system of a population of 90 breeding dunnocks (or hedge sparrow, Prunella modularis) included monogamy, polygyny, polyandry and polygynandry. Monogamous males guarded females during their fertile period to prevent neighbouring males from copulating. The most intense guarding occurred where two (unrelated) males shared a territory. Here, the alpha male tried to prevent the beta male from copulating with the female. Beta males were seen to copulate in only half the cases. They were more likely to succeed when the alpha male found it difficult to guard the female closely because her range was large, the vegetation was dense or there were other females breeding synchronously on the same territory. Close guarding and chasing by males reduced the female's feeding rate and was correlated with unhatched eggs in the nest. Females attempted to escape the alpha male's attentions and actively encouraged the beta male to mate. Beta males only helped to feed the young if they copulated with the female. Nestlings fed by two males and a female got more food and weighed more than those fed by just one male and a female. Indirect evidence suggested that when beta males failed to copulate, they destroyed eggs or young chicks. Females laid larger clutches when two males mated with them as opposed to one, thus adapting their clutch size to the amount of parental care they expected. The results of natural removal experiments and matched comparisons of the same female in different mating systems support these conclusions. For females, selection favours cooperative polyandry, whereas for males if favours polygyny; the variable mating system may reflect the different outcomes of this sexual conflict.  相似文献

Sanderlings on Bathurst Island in the Canadian arctic have two patterns of incubation. At some nests the eggs are covered soon after the fourth egg has been laid and at others incubation is delayed for 5–6 days. Because the delay is about the same time required to lay a second clutch and because a single individual alone incubates at any one nest, we suspected that Sanderlings might normally lay two clutches in a season, the male caring for one brood and the female for the other.
Histological and gross examination of the ovaries of two females taken as the birds began incubation showed eight freshly ovulated follicles in each female. The size gradation and histological appearance of the follicles indicated that two clutches of four eggs each had been laid within 8–10 days by a single female. The ovary of one female had additional large yolky follicles, suggesting a physiological capability of further ovulations.
Field conditions in the arctic summer are highly variable, and the small eggs and the rapid sequence of broods of Sanderlings may be breeding adaptations that permit them to multiply the traditional wader clutch of four eggs by 2 or 3 in favourable years. Selection for mating systems characterised by brief pair bonds and by polyandry is expected in precocial birds where some broods are incubated and cared for by the male, but further field work is required to determine the precise mating system of Sanderlings.  相似文献

In some fish species with exclusive paternal care females prefer to deposit their eggs in nests containing early-stage eggs and avoid those containing only late-stage eggs. Such female preference may also be shown when it comes to deciding where to lay within a given nest; that is, females may prefer to lay contiguously to younger rather than to older eggs. To understand if females benefit from such preferences by obtaining higher offspring survival, we conducted field studies with the bluefin damselfish, Abudefduf luridus. We investigated (1) female between-nest and within-nest spawning-site preferences relative to brood characters and (2) egg-hatching success related to male filial cannibalism. We found evidence that males entirely ate some of their clutches, especially the eggs received near the end of the breeding season. These were also more susceptible to being eaten when laid in nests containing only eggs in a late stage of development. Theoretically, these patterns of clutch loss should result in adaptive female preference for nests containing early-stage eggs, but we found no evidence for such a preference in female A. luridus. However, once females had chosen a nest they strongly preferred to lay contiguously to early-stage eggs than to late-stage eggs. Moreover, females benefited from this decision by obtaining higher survival rates for their clutches. We conclude that within-nest spawning-site preference of the female for early-stage eggs may have evolved as an adaptive response to a dilution effect on the risk of egg loss.  相似文献

Egg characteristics have been used to determine egg maternity for birds in situations where two or more females lay eggs in a single nest (as in communal breeders and intraspecific parasites). We assessed the applicability of egg morphometry and eggshell appearance in ascribing egg ownership in communal clutches of guira cuckoos Guira guira , a species where up to seven females may lay eggs in a joint nest. We used both combined variables (including egg mass, length, width, shape and two eggshell variables), and a shape index to test whether eggs laid by each female were similar but different from eggs laid by other females. Also, we conducted discriminant function analyses to verify if eggs could be correctly classified to their mothers based on their characteristics. The correct maternity was determined by yolk protein electrophoresis of freshly-laid eggs. Individual female chutches were separated through egg characteristics or shape alone in 29% and 41% of the groups tested, respectively. Differences were mostly due to a single female that differed from her nest-mates in a unique egg variable. On average, 55% of the eggs analyzed were not assigned to the correct mother using egg dimensions and eggshell speckling pattern. In conclusion, the egg characteristics used do not reliably indicate maternity in guira cuckoo communal clutches. We therefore recommend a protein-based verification of egg appearance characteristics for assigning maternity in other species in which multiple female laying occurs.  相似文献

Breeding ecology of the stream goby,Rhinogobius sp. LD (Large Dark), was investigated under natural conditions. Males selectively courted females of similar size to lead them to the nests, whereas females followed courting males preferentially when the relative male size was greater. Male-male competition for a female was relatively infrequent and not severe. Developmental stages of eggs and egg numbers in one nest indicated that males receive 1–3 clutches during one breeding cycle. Males guarding multiple clutches frequently ate some of the eggs, but those guarding single clutches rarely did so. Gravid females in the nest also frequently cannibalized eggs laid by a previous female, probably in order to extend the area available for egg deposition. Mate choice in this species is discussed in relation to paternal ability, limitation of available spawning area and the female-biased sex ratio.  相似文献

Egg recognition and subsequent egg brooding are costly forms of parental investment in many species of vertebrates. Life history factors, such as coloniality or risk of brood parasitism, may constrain egg recognition in vertebrates. Female red-backed salamanders ( Plethodon cinereus ) from my study site are territorial and do not share nest sites with other females. They are terrestrial and neither they nor their eggs are likely to be displaced by environmental factors such as flooding. I experimentally tested, in the laboratory, the hypothesis that female red-backed salamanders can discriminate between their own eggs and the eggs of unfamiliar females. Each female was allowed to move about a test chamber containing two clutches of eggs, one clutch with which it was found in the forest and one that had been found with a distant female. Most females remained with one clutch of eggs, which they brooded during the entire observation period. However, they did not significantly prefer to brood their own eggs over the eggs of another female. In a corollary field experiment, I tested whether brooding females that were displaced 1 m from their nest sites would return to their territories and commence brooding behaviour within 3 d. All 10 displaced females returned to their own nest within this time period and were found brooding their eggs. Because female red-backed salamanders at my study site do not tend to share nest sites with other females and because their eggs remain in stationary nests, selection may not have favoured egg recognition. However, the results suggest that female salamanders indirectly recognize their own eggs by actively recognizing their territorial nest sites.  相似文献

Reproductive tactics of ringed plovers Charadrius hiaticula were studied at three localities in SW Sweden during five seasons. The usual clutch size is four, but removal experiments showed that females can produce five eggs in succession, with similar intervals between all eggs. High predation made mean breeding success per clutch low, 6.3% of eggs resulting in fledged young. Replacement clutches were common, and many pairs laid again after rearing their first brood to fledging. Egg laying spanned three months, much longer than for other waders in this region. Between years, reproductive success varied unpredictably with time of the season, but averaged over several years, the expected success was low and similar for the different parts of the breeding season. Chicks from late clutches had similar survival and recruitment as others. Because of the long breeding season and high rate of nest failure a female may produce up to five clutches of four eggs per season, containing in total about 3.7 times her own mass. Yearly local survival of adult females and males was estimated to 84.6 and 88.6%, respectively. Ability to produce many clutches with similar expected success throughout the season favours a long reproductive period, sometimes leading to double-brooding. Possible life-history trade-offs are discussed.  相似文献

Three pairs of Knysna Warblers were monitored on the south-eastern slopes of Table Mountain during the 2000 breeding season. Males displayed alone on territories until the second half of August, when females arrived. Nest-building (8 days) and incubation (16 days) were undertaken entirely by the female, who was not fed on the nest by the male. Chick provisioning was done mainly by the male. Arachnids and terrestrial amphipods were the most common prey brought to chicks. The fledging period was 12 days. Modal clutch size was three eggs, and depredation rates of eggs and chicks were high. After losses, replacement clutches were laid on average 19 days later, after a new nest was built. A maximum of three clutches per pair was recorded. Of 18 eggs monitored, 28% hatched and 17% fledged, equating to a production of one fledgling per pair per year. Ten days after fledging, the entire family leaves the territory, males probably returning once young are independent. The main threats to the local populations are clearing of riparian undergrowth and management practices that impact the predators of rodents.  相似文献

Lack ( 1967 ) proposed that clutch size in species with precocial young was determined by nutrients available to females at the time of egg formation; since then others have suggested that regulation of clutch size in these species may be more complex. We tested whether incubation limitation contributes to ultimate constraints on maximal clutch size in Black Brent Geese (Black Brant) Branta bernicla nigricans. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between clutch size and duration of the nesting period (i.e. days between nest initiation and the first pipped egg) and the number of goslings leaving the nest. We used experimental clutch manipulations to assess these questions because they allowed us to create clutches that were larger than the typical maximum of five eggs in this species. We found that the per‐capita probability of egg success (i.e. the probability an egg hatched and the gosling left the nest) declined from 0.81 for two‐egg clutches to 0.50 for seven‐egg clutches. As a result of declining egg success, clutches containing more than five eggs produced, at best, only marginally more offspring. Manipulating clutch size at the beginning of incubation had no effect on the duration of the nesting period, but the nesting period increased with the number of eggs a female laid naturally prior to manipulation, from 25.4 days (95% CI 25.1–25.7) for three‐egg clutches to 27.7 days (95% CI 27.3–28.1) for six‐egg clutches. This delay in hatching may result in reduced gosling growth rates due to declining forage quality during the brood rearing period. Our results suggest that the strong right truncation of Brent clutches, which results in few clutches greater than five, is partially explained by the declining incubation capacity of females as clutch size increases and a delay in hatching with each additional egg laid. As a result, females laying clutches with more than five eggs would typically gain little fitness benefit above that associated with a five‐egg clutch.  相似文献

Lingcod, Ophiodon elongatus, is a nest-guarding marine fish of western North America. Breeding occurs in late winter and early spring after males establish territories and guard nest sites therein. Eggs deposited as clutches in the nest site hatch ~7 weeks after fertilization. We evaluated the level of genetic variation in lingcod spawning in the central Strait of Georgia through analysis of microsatellite and mitochondrial D-loop variability in fertilized egg samples collected from guarded clutches. Reconstructed parental genotypes displayed a high level of allelic diversity and observed heterozygosity (83–91%) over five microsatellite loci. Progeny of a single clutch were invariably derived from a single mother and between one and five fathers. Multiple egg samples were collected from inside and outside positions on 13 lingcod egg clutches in February 2002. Fin clip samples provided microsatellite genotypes for six of the nine guardian males. Analysis of between 33 and 306 eggs from each clutch indicated that each of the 13 clutches was produced by a different mother and five of them were sired entirely by the attendant male guardian. Eight clutches were sired by multiple males, with neighboring male guardians frequently involved in clutch fertilization. Known guardian males accounted for at least 78% of observed egg fertilization, although non-territorial males were observed and may have participated in spawning. Egg fertilization by individual males was spatially heterogeneous throughout egg clutches. One male guardian failed to fertilize detectable numbers of eggs in his own or any other clutch within the study area and may have been an adoptive father. The polygynous mating structure of lingcod may help maintain genetic variation in the species.  相似文献

Social monogamy with biparental care is the norm in gulls Laridae , but egg colour variation suggests that some nests may contain mixed clutches laid by more than one female. Here we use protein fingerprinting of egg albumen to assess the occurrence of mixed maternity clutches in three colonies of black-headed gulls. Among 160 analysed clutches with >1 egg, 34% contained eggs from more than one female, and 15% of the eggs in clutches >1 came from other females than the major female (laying most eggs in nest). Among clutches with 2–3 eggs 28% were mixed, and among clutches with 4 or more eggs 89% contained eggs from two or more females. There were significantly fewer eggs from the major female in mixed nests (mean=2.06±0.63 SD) than in non-mixed nests (mean=2.82±0.43 SD). In nests without evidence of female conflict, hatching success of minority eggs was similar to that of eggs from the major female (12.5 and 8.4%, respectively). In 21% of mixed maternity nests, one or more minority eggs was buried or punctured, and 25% of eggs from major females were also found evicted, suggesting conflict between females and rejection of eggs. Intra-specific nest parasitism seems the most likely cause of mixed clutches, but there are also other possible causes.  相似文献

The signalling hypothesis of eggshell colouration in birds posits that females of species with blue-green eggs signal their phenotypic quality or the quality of their eggs to their mates through deposition of the antioxidant biliverdin as pigment. Males respond by investing more in the offspring. Through a cross-fostering experiment where we have exchanged whole clutches between pairs of pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca nests, we managed to break potential associations between female quality and clutch chromaticity. We show that males respond to incubated clutches with more variable and higher peak values in blue-green chroma through a higher proportional investment in nestling provisioning on day 4 of the nestling period, when males invest more heavily than females in provisioning. More variable clutches show higher peak chroma values. We also show that egg colour during the two-week incubation period has a significant effect, which is not found for the colour of eggs during the laying period. Finally, the proportion of male provisioning visits affects negatively female brooding effort and nestling mortality, and thereby has positive effects on female fitness. Blue-green chroma in the pied flycatcher functions as a signal of female or clutch quality to males which respond by adjusting their relative investment with respect to total pair effort.  相似文献

In sequentially polyandrous birds, a female's second mate faces a substantial risk of cuckoldry due to rapid mate switching and stored sperm. Secondary males are potentially available to females because males arrive asynchronously and/or are recycled into the breeding pool following nest predation. In a study of red-necked phalaropes, Phalaropus lobatus, a sex-role reversed shorebird, we tested the hypotheses that the proportion of females that become polyandrous is proximately limited by: (1) the ability of females to produce eggs, (2) the availability of males as mates and (3) male mate choice. In a colour-banded population in which rates of nest loss were manipulated by researchers, females that produced second clutches required similar lengths of time to complete clutches as those contemporaneously producing first clutches, and increased their egg size relative to their first clutch, making egg limitation unlikely. There was no correlation between an annual measure of males' availability as potential mates following nest losses and the proportion of females that were polyandrous. The majority of males that lost clutches (66%) re-paired with their original female significantly more often than expected by random mate choice (P<0.0001). Although 76% of polyandrous nestings involved renesting males, only 6% (N=46) of renesting males changed mates if their original female was still available. Renesting males that changed mates did not select for or against females that had already produced clutches (NS). Our results suggest that the level of polyandry in this species is not constrained by the females' abilities to produce more eggs or by the number of males recycling back into the breeding pool. Instead, the proportion of females that become polyandrous is limited by males choosing to renest with their original females, thereby decreasing their probability of caring for eggs potentially fertilized by a female's previous mate.  相似文献
