The evolution of venom-delivery systems in snakes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The Colubroidea represents approximately 2300 of the 2700 species of living snakes and includes all venomous taxa. Although many morphological studies of colubroid snakes have been carried over the last hundred years, the phylogenetic relationships within this group are poorly known. In this study, components of the venom-delivery system (VDS) were examined within the context of two conflicting phylogenetic hypotheses proposed in 1988 by Cadle and in 1998 by Kraus & Braun. The results suggest that several major morphological changes occurred early in colubroid evolution: a Duvernoy's gland evolved, the posterior maxillary teeth became specialized relative to the anterior maxillary teeth, and the attachment of the pterygoideus muscle moved forward to a position associated with the posterior maxillary teeth. These innovations may have allowed the great radiation of colubroid snakes that led to the Colubroidea representing such a large percentage of living snakes. The desert plated lizard ( Angolosaurus skoogi ), a 'sand sea' endemic of the northern Namib Desert, exhibits remarkable morphological convergence with other dune-dwelling lizards worldwide. This distinct ecomorphic condition sets Angolosaurus apart from the remaining genera in the family Gerrhosauridae. Indeed, a morphological phylogeny addressing generic relationships within the Cordyliformes (Cordylidae + Gerrhosauridae) identified Angolosaurus as the earliest diverging taxon among African gerrhosaurids. We re-evaluated the basal status of Angolosaurus , conducting a molecular phylogenetic analysis of the African and Madagascan gerrhosaurid genera. Our survey involved a comprehensive species-level comparison among the four nominal genera of mainland Africa ( Angolosaurus , Cordylosaurus , Tetradactylus and Gerrhosaurus ). Mitochondrial DNA sequence data from the cytochrome b , ND2, 12S and 16S rRNA genes were combined for analysis using both parsimony and maximum likelihood procedures. In contrast to the morphological hypothesis, our results do not depict Angolosaurus as the sister taxon to other African gerrhosaurids. A new method is proposed which uses transitions among acts in non-stereotyped behavioural sequences as phylogenetic characters. This method is derived from the event-pairing method designed for the phylogenetic study of developmental sequences and from ethological analyses of transition matrices. It is applied to study the phylogenetic relationships within a well-known group, the presocial Zetoborinae cockroaches. The analysis is carried out with three data sets: a behavioural data set with transitions among acts in behavioural dyadic sequences, together with morphological and molecular data sets. Non-stereotyped behaviour proved to be phylogenetically informative and to display low homoplasy. This new method opens an avenue for studying the evolution of behaviour in the framework of phylogenetic analysis, which was restricted until now to the study of stereotyped sequences and/or isolated features involved in courting or building activities.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 853–867.  相似文献

Land snails have long been recognized as suitable organisms for studying phenotypic differentiation and phylogeny in relation to geographical distribution. Morphological data (shell and anatomy biometry on different geographical scales) and partial sequences from mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase subunit I , 16S rDNA) were used to test whether morphological patterns match phylogeny in a diversified group of Sicilian rock-dwelling land snails belonging to the genus Marmorana . The taxonomic implications of the three character sets (shell and anatomical biometry and molecular data) were also considered. The inferred phylogenetic relationships do not match morphological (shell and genitalia) patterns. This result may significantly modify the current taxonomy. Mitochondrial based reconstructions define several supported clades well correlated with geographic distribution and populations were found to be distributed parapatrically. The progressive decline in mitochondrial DNA sequence similarity over a distance of 250 km is consistent with a model of isolation by distance, a pattern previously recognized for other groups of land snails. Analysis of ecological characters on phylogenetic frameworks has only recently appeared in the literature, with several studies addressing patterns of niche evolution, generally over relatively recent time frames. In the present study, we examined patterns of niche evolution for a broad radiation of American blackbird species (Family Icteridae), exploring more deeply into phylogenetic history. Within each of three major blackbird lineages, overlap of ecological niches in principal components analysis transformed environmental space varied from high to none. Comparative phylogenetic analyses of ecological niche characteristics showed a general pattern of niche conservatism over evolutionary time, with differing degrees of innovation among lineages. Although blackbird niches were evolutionarily plastic over differing periods of time, they diverged within a limited set of ecological possibilities, resulting in examples of niche convergence among extant blackbird species. Hence, an understanding of the patterns of ecological niche evolution on broad phylogenetic scales sets the stage for framing questions of evolutionary causation, historical biogeography, and ancestral ecological characteristics more appropriately.  © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2008, 94 , 869–878.  相似文献

A data matrix is presented of 210 morphological characters (mostly osteological, some external) for 20 extant taxa of the ten Recent families of tetraodontiform fishes and 36 fossil tetraodontiforms. The oldest of these are from the Upper Cretaceous (95 Mya); most are from the Lower to Middle Eocene (50–58 Mya). There are two outgroup taxa (a zeiform and a caproid). A cladistic analysis of this matrix for only the extant taxa produced two equally parsimonious trees that call into question the monophyly of some of the previously accepted major higher-level tetraodontiform clades. Inclusion in the analysis of the large number of available fossil taxa helps to resolve relationships between family level clades. Because of the poor state of knowledge of many of the gymnophthalmid genera, systematic revision is necessary to render the classification consistent with evolutionary history. To that end, I conducted a review of the species of three genera of the Cercosaurinae which appear to form a monophyletic group: Cercosaura , Pantodactylus , and Prionodactylus . Phylogenetic analysis of 61 morphological characters was conducted after specimens of all species were examined to evaluate the composition of each taxon. The phylogenetic reconstruction suggested that the genus Prionodactylus was paraphyletic. A new phylogenetic classification is proposed that synonymizes Pantodactylus and Prionodactylus with Cercosaura. Cercosaura is redefined to include 11 species and seven subspecies. Lagomorph pelage coloration was matched to habitat type, geographical region, altitude and behaviour to explore the adaptive significance of coloration patterns in this little-studied order of mammals. Analyses were conducted with and without taking phylogeny into account. The former analyses were based on a weighted, phylogenetic supertree for all extant species of lagomorphs that we constructed using morphological and molecular data from 146 papers in the literature. Although our analyses represent an initial, somewhat crude investigation, several clear trends are evident. First, overall body coloration across lagomorphs tends to match the background as shown for pale and red coloration and perhaps seasonal pelage change. The case for countershading being a method of concealment is far less strong. Second, ear tips appear to have a communicative role since they are conspicuous in many different habitats. In the largest group of extant turtles, the Testudinoidea, the acquisition of an aquatic or terrestrial way of life has occurred within two clades, allowing the study of homoplasy linked to environment (commonly named convergence). Here we appraise the respective importance of two sources of morphological variation: a major cladogenetic event and a major environmental shift (aquatic vs. terrestrial). The repeatability of the same evolutionary process (environmental change) allows an assessment of the weights of both natural selection and phylogenetic constraints on several morphological features of the shell. These sources of morphological variance on the complex shell structure were studied using geometric morphometrics. We depict the morphological variation of three parts of the turtle shell: epidermal carapace, bony carapace, and plastron. In the three structures, we found that both phylogeny and environment were significant sources of morphological variation, and geometric morphometrics allowed the pattern of morphological variation due to each effect to be assessed. The assessment of the homoplasy due to environment and of the pattern of morphological variability suggests that the carapace has undergone similar morphological changes between aquatic and terrestrial environments within the two clades. The southern African pholcid spiders previously assigned to Pholcus and Spermophora are revised and their phylogenetic position within Pholcidae is analysed cladistically. Two distinct groups are recognized: the first is restricted to the Cape region and probably correctly placed in Spermophora ; it includes Spermophora peninsulae Lawrence and four new species. The second is more widely distributed in southern and eastern South Africa, and reaches as far north as Cameroon, Congo (Democratic Republic) and Uganda; it is assigned generic status ( Quamtana gen. nov .), and includes two species transferred from Pholcus [ Q. leptopholcica (Strand), Q. ciliata (Lawrence)] as well as 23 new species. A key to the pholcid spiders of South Africa is presented. Our understanding of the critical shift in life history among insect parasitoids from ectoparasitism to endoparasitism is hindered by the fact that this particular life history trait is not known for many phylogenetically important taxa. One method of coping with this problem is to seek correlations between the ovipositor structure and this life history trait among taxa whose life history is known, and then to use this to infer the trait in species whose life history in unknown. In one group of parasitoid wasps, the Ichneumonoidea (Hymenoptera), we scored a total of 20 morphometric and morphological characters of the ovipositor for 41 species whose life histories are known – representing all the main clades in which there have been independent transitions to endoparasitism plus a broad range of the ectoparasitoid groups; we then used phylogenetic regression and discriminant analyses to infer the life history of four species whose life histories are unknown. To allow for the effect of phylogenetic non-independence in the discriminant analysis, we carried out analyses using different randomly chosen representatives of the endoparasitoid clades (phylogenetic regression controls for phylogeny). These two methods gave congruent results from which we conclude that Megalohelcon and Gnamptodon are endoparasitoids, and Aspilodemon and Allobracon are ectoparasitoids. We discuss the consequences of these inferences for our understanding of the evolution of endoparasitism in the Ichneumonoidea.  © 2003 The Linnean Society of London. A cladistic analysis is performed using 94 morphological and biochemical characters for 42 genera to compare a phylogeny based on morphological data with those obtained using different genes ( rbc L, atp B, 18S RNA, mat K) or their combination with morphological data, and to understand the floral evolution within the expanded Brassicales (Capparales) relative to Sapindales and Malvales. The tree produced with morphological data is congruent with those obtained from macromolecular studies in obtaining a well-supported glucosinolate-producing clade and an expanded Sapindales. The combined analysis of the morphological and molecular characters is generally well resolved with support for many of the relationships. The inclusion of the fossil taxon Dressiantha demonstrates the value of inserting fossil evidence in phylogenetic analyses. However, the fossil appears to be related to the Anacardiaceae and not to the Brassicales. The core Brassicales are well supported by a number of synapomorphies, although the internal position of Tovariaceae and Pentadiplandraceae is not well resolved. Emblingiaceae appears to be related to Bataceae and Salvadoraceae. Several significant morphological characters are mapped on the combined trees and their evolutionary significance is discussed. Within Brassicales and Sapindales several well supported clades can be recognized which merit ordinal or subordinal status, putting the present orders at a higher level; these include: Tropaeolales, Setchellanthales, Batidales, Brassicales (Brassiciflorae), Burserales, Sapindales and Rutales (Sapindiflorae). The use of coloration as a source of characters in phylogenetic reconstruction is investigated using 54 published data sets. Studies were divided into two categories based on a priori postulated roles of the coloration: (1) aposematic and mimetic coloration and (2) nonaposematic, nonmimetic coloration plus dual signals. Colour characters superficially appear to provide similar phylogenetic signal to morphological ones in the case of aposematic and mimetic coloration but significantly less in other situations. However, the data indicated that the apparent signal in the aposematic/mimetic studies tends to be in greater conflict with the morphological signal. It is proposed that this reflects constraints in the evolution of colour characters that are part of aposematic/mimetic patterns and not that they are necessarily good indicators of phylogeny.  © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2006, 88 , 193–202.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships of 64 freshwater Barbus s.s. species distributed in basins around the Mediterranean Sea were assessed using cytochrome b sequences. Our results are in concordance with previous morphological and genetic studies, which proposed that these species belong to two major lineages (or subgenera): Barbus and Luciobarbus . We were particularly interested in phylogenetic relationships among species of the Luciobarbus lineage that are primarily found in the southern Mediterranean region from the Iberian Peninsula to the Middle East. In the Luciobarbus lineage, species that were previously attributed to the Capoeta genus were clustered. In this study, we observed short internodes between monophyletic groups having a geographical agreement around the Mediterranean. However, groups from the opposite sides of the Mediterranean Sea (Iberian Peninsula– Capoeta , north-western Africa–Middle East) seem to be phylogenetically close. We therefore infer that rapid radiation of Luciobarbus species in the Late Miocene better fits our data rather than gradual founder events in the southern Mediterranean. We propose that the biogeographical event along an east–west route, responsible for the present distribution of Luciobarbus species, was the 'Lago Mare' phase of the Mediterranean Sea that provided a rapid dispersal route over extensive distances. Thomandersia is an isolated genus that is currently unplaced in Lamiales. In the past it has been classified in Acanthaceae or Pedaliaceae, on the basis of intuitive assessments of a limited number of morphological characters. Recent molecular sequenced-based phylogenies have suggested a relationship to Bignoniaceae, Schlegeliaceae or Verbenaceae. Here we present new observations of the floral anatomy of Thomandersia , with particular emphasis on the structure of the retinaculum, a character shared with Acanthaceae, and calyx nectaries, which may be shared with other families in Lamiales. The morphological and anatomical characters of Thomandersia are discussed in the context of recent phylogenetic hypotheses for Lamiales, with the aim of identifying potential primary and secondary homologies between Thomandersia and related families in Lamiales. We find that Thomandersia shares a range of characters with each of the families to which it might be sister-group, and that some of these primary homologies must therefore be homoplastic.
