The life cycle of Ascocotyle (Leighia) hadra n. sp. was experimentally reproduced, starting from cercariae from naturally infected Littoridina parchappei, collected from Los Ranchos stream, near Mercedes city, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Metacercariae were found encysted in the liver and mesentery of experimentally and naturally infected fishes Cnesterodon decemmaculatus and Jenynsia lineata. Adults were obtained experimentally in chicks and mice. The natural host is unknown. The new species is compared with Ascocotyle (Leighia) mcintoshi Price 1936 as described by Leigh, 1974, differing in behavior and morphology of cercarial, metacercarial and adult stages.  相似文献

A survey for entomopathogenic fungi of Musca domestica adults was conducted in poultry houses in La Plata, Buenos Aires province, Argentina, during the years 2002 and 2003. Adult house flies were found infected with the fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. (Deuteromycotina: Hyphomycetes) from field collections, with a natural infected prevalence between 0.4–1.45%. This is the first record of natural infections of house flies caused by B. bassiana for the neotropics. Pathogenicity assays under laboratory conditions showed 94% adult mortality at 14 days post challenge. CIC fellow  相似文献

In this study the first length–weight relationships are provided for Helcogrammoides cunninghami and Ribeiroclinus eigenmanni inhabiting subtidal rocky areas in northern Patagonia, and for Hypleurochilus fissicornis inhabiting intertidal rocky areas in Buenos Aires Province. Specimens were collected between 2009 and 2016, from seven different locations in northern Patagonia and Buenos Aires Province (Southwest Atlantic Coast; 37°–42°S), using a trawling dredge or a small hand net. New maximum lengths were recorded for R. eigenmanni and H. fissicornis.  相似文献

An isolate from Argentina of the fungal mosquito pathogen Leptolegnia chapmanii (ARSEF 5499), was tested against 12 species of mosquito larvae and on species of non-target aquatic invertebrates and vertebrates. The mosquito species tested were Aedes aegypti, Anopheles sp., Culex apicinus, Cx. castroi, Cx. dolosus, Cx. pipiens, Cx. renatoi, Isostomyia paranensis, Ochlerotatus albifasciatus, Oc. crinifer, Psorophora cyanescens, and P. ferox. Mosquito larvae of 10 species were susceptible, with mortality rates from 10–100%. Two mosquito species Cx. renatoi and I. paranensis were not infected by Leptolegnia. None of the non-target fauna treated was infected by L. chapmanii with exception of members of the Family Chironomidae which were susceptible at low infection rates. Aedes (Ochlerotatus) albifasciatus (Macquart) has the capacity to proliferate in different kinds of climates within its distribution range in South America. With the aim of studying local thermal adaptations of eggs, we exposed egg stocks from two climatically different localities: temperate humid pampa (Buenos Aires) and cold arid Patagonian (Sarmiento), to freezing conditions and then evaluated the effect on some features at this level. First, we thermally described the substrate where this species lays its eggs in the arid region. A typical thermal condition during winter was 10 h at ?12° C. Second, we evaluated the effect of freezing on primary hatching (vs total hatching) and embryo survival. We also compared the proportion of embryonated eggs from both populations. The proportions of embryonated eggs were not different between localities, with averages of 78% and 83% in Sarmiento and Buenos Aires, respectively. Survival was equally successful after freezing in the two localities with an average range between 94–99%. Whether or not the eggs from Buenos Aires and Sarmiento were under freezing conditions, hatching was more than 98% after the first flooding. The results suggest that eggs of Ae. albifasciatus from Sarmiento and Buenos Aires have the same ability to survive at extreme temperatures (<0° C), showing a regional thermal adaptation rather than a local one.  相似文献

The mode, season, and time of brooding, egg diameter, egg number per brood, and the characteristics of newly released juveniles of Psolus patagonicus were investigated off Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires, Argentina, between October 1999 and February 2001. Individuals were attached to the Patagonian scallop, Zygochlamys patagonica. Spawning occurs between February and March. The mean egg diameter, 887 ± 26 μm, is the highest reported for the family Psolidae. Eggs are brooded under the mother’s sole until they develop into crawling juveniles within 7 months. The largest embryos reached a length of 1,941 ± 228 μm in September. During the brooding period (February–September) the number of brooded embryos decreased while their size increased. Our study confirms brooding behaviour in female P. patagonicus.  相似文献

Tayassu pecari is widely distributed across the Neotropical region, from northern Argentina to south-eastern Mexico. However, its fossil record is scarce; it is recorded since the middle Pleistocene to Holocene in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. This paper aims to: (1) update the systematic synonymy of this species; (2) review and update its geographic chronologic distribution and provide a new Lujanian record of Tayassu pecari in Buenos Aires Province and (3) discuss the paleoenvironmental and paleobiogeographical implications of this record. Considering the quantitative analysis performed, the fossil here recorded clearly integrates the group of Tayassu pecari. This specimen corresponds to the first record of Tayassu pecari in the central-northern region of the Buenos Aires Province. During Late Pleistocene, Tayassu pecari was distributed southern to its recent range, probably evidencing different paleoenvironment conditions. This species is the better adapted peccary to tropical and subtropical rainforests, but may also be present in arid environments. Consequently, Tayassu by itself is insufficient to infer the prevailing environmental conditions. However, according to the fauna associated with the specimen described here, it is possible to infer an open or semi-open and arid or semi-arid environment for the central-northern Buenos Aires region by Late Pleistocene times.  相似文献

The taxonomic and distributional statuses of the freshwater planarians of South America are imperfectly understood, and a comprehensive review is sorely needed. The species known from the vicinity of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was first described by Böhmig (1902) under the name Planaria dubia Borelli, 1895. Subsequent authors (Kenk, 1930, 1974; Cazzaniga & Curino, 1987) have cast doubt on this assignation. Some have assigned it to Dugesia anceps Kenk; Hyman (1959) was inclined to regard the Buenos Aires planarian as a geographical variant of Dugesia sanchezi Hyman. A comparison of D. sanchezi from the mountainous region of central Chile with specimens from Buenos Aires confirms that the Argentinian material is a distinct species. The differences between the two species are subtle. The Argentinian specimens are distinctive in their possession of infranucleate epithelia of the atria, penis, and bursal canal, as well as in their penial structure. In both species, the epithelia of the atria and bursal canal are glandular. Those of D. sanchezi are nucleate and their secretions are cyanophilous. In the Argentinian specimens, these same epithelia are infranucleate; but while the secretion of the bursal canal is indeed cyanophilous, that of the atrium is erythrophilous. The presence, in these same specimens, of cyanophilous glands opening into the penial vesicles, and of erythrophilous glands whose secretions contribute to a viscous plug in the ejaculatory duct, suggests a difference in the physiology of copulation. It is apparent that the Argentinian specimens are distinct from D. sanchezi Hyman, and probably they represent a new species, one to be described in detail elsewhere. In any case, Hyman's (1959) suggestion that D. sanchezi occurs near Buenos Aires is mistaken; so also is Cazzaniga's & Curino's (1987) identification of specimens from Buenos Aires as D. anceps.  相似文献

Phenology and habitat selection of the aphidophagous syrphid species most frequently found in crops and pastures in the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The paucity in ecological studies on aphidophagous syrphid flies (Diptera, Syrphidae) of the neotropical region is particularly pronounced in Argentina. In order to increase the database on these natural enemies, the phenology and habitat selection of six syrphid flies (Dipt., Syrphidae):Syrphus phaeostigma (L.);Allograpta obliqua (Wied.);Allograpta exotica (Wied.);Pseudodorus clavatus (L.);Platycheirus carposcalis (L.) andOcyptamus argentinensis (Thorn.) were studied in the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). The moment of the year in which adults, eggs, larvae and pupae of these species are found was recorded. The phenologies found for the species in our area are similar to those found for other species of the same genera in other parts of the world. These aphidophagous syrphids are not evenly distributed in all the systems sampled, evidencing a preference for either one of the following types of habitat: cereal crop, lucerne, soya, bushes or prairies. These results are potentially useful in terms of crop and pest management practices.

The life cycle of Stephanoprora uruguayense Holcman et Olagüe, 1989, was experimentally resolved. In an artificial pond in the Zoological Garden in Buenos Aires City, Argentina, Heleobia parchappei (Hydrobiidae) was found to be releasing large-tailed cercariae with a prepharyngeal body, but lacking collar spines and corpuscles in the excretory system. Metacercariae, which encysted on the gills of naturally and experimentally infected Cnesterodon decemmaculatus (Poecilidae), developed collar spines and corpuscles in the excretory system in 7 days. Sexually mature adults were recovered from chicks and immature adults from mice fed metacercariae from C. decemmaculatus. Eggs shed in chick feces developed to miracidia within 10 days; sporocysts were found on the gills of snails. Stephanoprora uruguayense and S. denticulata from Europe are similar in adult morphology, but can be distinguished by morphological and behavioral features of larvae. Likewise, although S. denticulata and S. paradenticulata from Venezuela are similar to S. uruguayense in adult morphology, they differ considerably in larval morphology and intermediate hosts.  相似文献

Abstract Fire and grazing are important factors in the regulation of the grassland structure of the Flooding Pampa (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina dominated by Paspalum quadrifarium plants (henceforth ‘pajonal’)). Winter burning of pajonal is a practice that increases P. quadrifarium growth and its nutritious value for cattle. The objective of this work was to determine the responses of different demographic variables of P. quadrifarium growing in a grassland managed with different fire frequencies. The work was carried out in a pajonal situated in San Ignacio (Ayacucho county, Buenos Aires Province, Argentina). The treatments were: high fire frequency (0.8 fires per year) and low fire frequency (0.4 fires per year). The population of P. quadrifarium was affected by fire frequency. Biomass, number of tillers, and the relative production of tillers per plant did not change with fire frequency. Plant height was negatively affected by fire frequency. Whereas no plant mortality was observed in high fire frequency, 30% of the mature plants died at the end of the experiment in low fire frequency. In both treatments, plant mortality was size‐dependent and juvenile plants were more affected than mature ones. Burning had an immediate negative effect on mature and juvenile plants in terms of fecundity, survival of tillers and basal cover. Tiller survival and fecundity were significantly lower in burned plants than in unburned ones. In the high fire frequency treatment the number of ramets and/or genets and basal cover were greater than in the low fire frequency treatment.  相似文献

Amphicypris argentinensis sp. nov., is described and illustrated from Laguna Caliba, an ephemeral fresh water lake from the southern coast of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Specimens were raised from dried sediment recovered from a bank of ostracod shells found at the edges of the lake. Deposition of progressively smaller ostracod valves stacked one into another (cup-in-cup structure) is documented. The geographical distribution and ecology of the genus is briefly discussed.  相似文献

Background

The estimated prevalence of HCV infection in Argentina is around 2%. However, higher rates of infection have been described in population studies of small urban and rural communities. The aim of this work was to compare the origin and diversification of HCV-1b in samples from two different epidemiological scenarios: Buenos Aires, a large cosmopolitan city, and O''Brien, a small rural town with a high prevalence of HCV infection.

Patients and Methods

The E1/E2 and NS5B regions of the viral genome from 83 patients infected with HCV-1b were sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis and Bayesian Coalescent methods were used to study the origin and diversification of HCV-1b in both patient populations.

Results

Samples from Buenos Aires showed a polyphyletic behavior with a tMRCA around 1887–1900 and a time of spread of infection approximately 60 years ago. In contrast, samples from ÓBrien showed a monophyletic behavior with a tMRCA around 1950–1960 and a time of spread of infection more recent than in Buenos Aires, around 20–30 years ago.

Conclusion

Phylogenetic and coalescence analysis revealed a different behavior in the epidemiological histories of Buenos Aires and ÓBrien. HCV infection in Buenos Aires shows a polyphyletic behavior and an exponential growth in two phases, whereas that in O''Brien shows a monophyletic cluster and an exponential growth in one single step with a more recent tMRCA. The polyphyletic origin and the probability of encountering susceptible individuals in a large cosmopolitan city like Buenos Aires are in agreement with a longer period of expansion. In contrast, in less populated areas such as O''Brien, the chances of HCV transmission are strongly restricted. Furthermore, the monophyletic character and the most recent time of emergence suggest that different HCV-1b ancestors (variants) that were in expansion in Buenos Aires had the opportunity to colonize and expand in O’Brien.  相似文献

Richness and diversity of parasites depend on a set of interrelated factors related to the characteristics of the host, the environment and the parasites itself. In the City of Buenos Aires, rodent communities vary according to landscape structure. The goal of this paper was to study the variations of helminth richness and diversity among invasive rodent species in different landscape units of the City of Buenos Aires. 73% of the rodents were parasitized with at least one of the 10 identified helminth species. Each rodent species presented its own characteristics in terms of richness, diversity and helminth composition, keeping these characteristics still occupying more than one landscape unit. The infracommunities with greater diversity corresponded to R. norvegicus due to its high values of parasitic richness, proportion of infected hosts and parasite prevalence. Instead, R. rattus and M. musculus infracommunities had lower diversity since a high percentage of them presented a unique helminth species. Within the city, the inhabitants of shantytowns would be the most exposed to zoonotic diseases transmitted by rodents due to high abundance of rodents harboring a high parasite load, including species like Hymenolepis nana and H. diminuta, recognized worldwide from a zoonotic aspect.  相似文献

The life history of Cladophora surera sp. Nov., described from the south of the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina, was found to be diplobiontic and isomorphic with haploid gametophytic (n= 24) and sporophytic (2n= 48) plants. Other freshwater species, namely C, suhriana Kutz, and C. callicoma Kütz. have also been reported to be diplobiontic and isomorphic but differing from C. surera by their ploidy level. Plants exhibit great morphological variation, as the number of branches/mm2 tends to increase with higher water velocity, thus adopting morphotypes that resemble very different species, that is, C. vagabunda (L.) Hoek, C. glomerata (L.) Kutz., C, laetevirens (Dillw.) Kutz., C. brasiliana Martens, C. dalmatica Kütz., C. vadorum (Aresch.) Kütz. and C. rivularis (L.) Hoek., but clearly differing from them by other morphological parameters; apical cell diameters, The ploidy level 24/48 has not been established for a species of Cladophora. Food searching behavior of the Buenos Aires tetra Hyphessobrycon anisitsi has been investigated before and after experimentally induced anosmia combined with visual deprivation. The threshold concentration of a water extract of familiar food (chironomid larvae) for fish with intact olfaction was 10–6 g/L. Induced anosmia led to complete loss of the search reaction to food odor. The chemosensory behavioral response to the water extract of food used at high concentrations (10-1-10-2 g/L) was not restored in fish after 1.5, 5, or 13.5 months of anosmia. The obtained results show that the external sense of taste is absent or extremely poorly developed in the Buenos Aires tetra.  相似文献

The Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus) is an important host of the brood parasitic Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis) in Uruguay, but not in nearby Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Eggs of the Shiny Cowbird are extremely variable in size, and horneros eject cowbird eggs with widths less than about 88% of the widths of their own eggs. Uruguayan cowbird eggs are, on average, 12% larger than those from Buenos Aires, a geographic pattern in egg size that corresponds to the pattern of successful host use. Uruguayan cowbird eggs are also wider per unit volume than eggs from Buenos Aires. Allometric analyses of egg width and volume indicate that this shape change is apparently an evolutionary response to selection exerted by the hornero. Such a response is absent in Buenos Aires because interactions between the cowbird and the hornero are probably of recent origin there.  相似文献
