Summary We examined the parietal eye visual system of the iguanid lizard Uta stansburiana for the presence of substance P-like immunoreactivity by use of both immunofluorescence and peroxidase-antiperoxidase techniques. In the parietal eye no substance P-containing somata were found; however, its plexiform layer contained small (ca. 1 m diam) immunoreactive fibers. These fibers apparently originate outside the parietal eye. Immunoreactive fibers also were found in the parietal nerve, the dorsal sac, and the leptomeninx of the pineal gland. No labeled somata were observed in any of these regions in either normal or colchicine treated animals. Previously we demonstrated that a system of centrifugal fibers to the parietal eye originates from neurons in the dorsal sac (Engbretson et al. 1981). The apparent absence of substance P-containing neurons in the dorsal sac suggests that the substance P-containing fibers in the parietal eye are not the previously observed centrifugal fibers. The source of the substance P-containing fibers in the parietal eye is unknown. The pars dorsolateralis of the left medial habenular nucleus receives a dense substance P-positive projection. No such projection was seen in the right habenula. Simultaneous visualization of the terminals of ganglion cells of the parietal eye (labeled with orthograde intraaxonally transported horseradish peroxidase) and substance P-like immunofluorescence showed that the locus of habenular immunoreactivity is distinct from the projection field of the parietal eye. Thus the substance P-positive terminals in the habenula do not originate in the parietal eye. Transection of the parietal nerve confirmed this conclusion.  相似文献

The evolutionary processes that result in reliable links between male signals and fighting capacity have received a great deal of attention, but the proximate mechanisms underlying such connections remain understudied. We studied a large sample of male green anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis) to determine whether testosterone or corticosterone predicted dewlap size and/or bite-force capacity, as dewlap size is known to be a reliable predictor of bite-force capacity in territorial males. We also examined whether these relationships were consistent between previously described body size classes ("lightweights" and "heavyweights"). Heavyweights had 50% higher testosterone concentrations than lightweights during the breeding season, suggesting a mechanism for the disproportionately larger heads and dewlaps and higher bite-forces of heavyweights. Plasma testosterone concentrations were positively correlated with dewlap size and bite-force performance in lightweights (but not heavyweights) but only because of mutual intercorrelation of all three variables with body size. We suggest two possibilities for the relationship between testosterone levels and body size: (1) testosterone promotes growth in this species or (2) smaller sexually mature males are unable to compete with larger males such that the benefits of elevated testosterone do not outweigh the costs. Corticosterone levels did not differ between the male morphs, and lightweights, but not heavyweights, showed an inverse relationship between testosterone levels and corticosterone levels. Our results suggest that testosterone is important for traits related to dominance in adult male green anoles and may influence the ability to compete with rivals via fighting ability or through the use of signals.  相似文献

The neuropeptide kisspeptin and its receptor are essential for activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and regulating reproduction. While the role of kisspeptin in regulating the HPG axis in mammals has been well established, little is known about the functional ability of kisspeptins to activate the HPG axis and associated behavior in non-mammalian species. Here we experimentally examined the effects of kisspeptin on downstream release of testosterone and associated aggression and display behaviors in the side-blotched lizard (Uta stansburiana). We found that exogenous treatment with kisspeptin resulted in an increase in circulating testosterone levels, castration blocked the kisspeptin-induced increase in testosterone, and testosterone levels in kisspeptin-treated animals were positively related to frequency of aggressive behaviors. This evidence provides a clear link between kisspeptin, testosterone, and aggressive behavior in lizards. Thus, it is likely that kisspeptin plays an important role more broadly in non-mammalian systems in the regulation of reproductive physiology and related behaviors.  相似文献

The resting metabolic rate (RMR) of seasonally-acclimated Mabuya brevicollis of various body masses was determined at 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 °C, using open-flow respirometry. RMR (ml g−1 h−1) decreased with increasing mass at each temperature. RMRs increaProd. Type: FTPsed as temperature increased. The highest and lowest Q10 values were obtained for the temperature ranges 20–25 °C and 30–35 °C for the summer-acclimated lizards. The exponent of mass “b” in the metabolism-body mass relation ranged from 0.41 to 0.61. b values were lower in the autumn and winter-acclimated lizards than in spring and summer-acclimated lizards. Seasonal acclimation effects were evident at all temperatures (20–40 °C) for M. brevicollis. Winter-acclimated skinks had the lowest metabolic rates at different temperatures. The pattern of acclimation exhibited by M. brevicollis may represent a useful adaptation for lizards inhabiting subtropical deserts to promote activity during their active seasons.  相似文献

Summary Caudal autotomy is an effective anti-predator mechanism used by many lizard species. Fitness benefits of surviving a predatory attack are obvious, although lizards that autotomize their tails may be at greater risk during subsequent encounters with predators than lizards with complete tails. In previous laboratory studies, tail-less lizards were more vulnerable to capture by predators, but little is known about the relative survival of tailed versus tail-less lizards in nature. This study reports on significant associations between naturally incurred tail injuries and the subsequent risk of mortality in 7 populations of the lizard Uta stansburiana. I used standard mark-recapture techniques to document survival and quantified tail injuries by estimating tail completeness. I then used sampled randomization tests to compare intitial tail completeness values of surviving versus non-surviving lizards. I evaluated overall patterns by comparising the means of tail completeness values of survivors versus non-survivors among mark-recapture sequences. Lizards with incomplete tails suffered higher mortality in the field, although this was not true for every comparison considered (i.e., for every mark-recapture sequence analyzed), and the overall trend was much stronger for adult males than for either adult females or juveniles. Higher mortality among lizards with incomplete tails is presumably a consequence of increased vulnerability to capture by predators. Vulnerability to predation of tail-injured lizards may be confounded by reduced social status in this species, because social subordination can result in the occupation of an inferior home range.  相似文献

Averse effects of social stress may be buffered by the presence of social allies, which mainly has been demonstrated in mammals and recently also in birds. However, effects of socio-positive behavior prior to fledging in relation to corticosterone excretion in altricial birds have not been investigated yet. We here monitored corticosterone excretion patterns in three groups of hand raised juvenile ravens (n=5, 6 and 11) in the nest, post-fledging (May-July) and when ravens would be independent from their parents (September-November). We related these corticosterone excretion patterns to socio-positive behavior. Behavioral data were collected via focal sampling in each developmental period considered. We analyzed amounts of excreted immunoreactive corticosterone metabolites (CM) using enzyme immuno assays. We collected fecal samples in each developmental period considered and evaluated the most appropriate assay via an isolation stress experiment. Basal CM was significantly higher during the nestling period than post-fledging or when birds were independent. The time nestlings spent allopreening correlated negatively with mean CM. Post-fledging, individuals with higher CM levels sat close to (distance <50 cm) conspecifics more frequently and tended to preen them longer. When birds were independent and a stable rank hierarchy was established, dominant individuals were preened significantly longer than subordinates. These patterns observed in ravens parallel those described for primates, which could indicate that animal species living in a complex social environment may deal with social problems in a similar way that is not restricted to mammals or primates.  相似文献

An expanding body of literature has demonstrated that global climate change continues to adversely affect many populations, species, and ecosystems. However, life-history theory also predicts possible benefits from longer growing seasons and less severe winters, particularly for ectotherms. To test the idea that climate change will have benefits as well as costs, I studied the impacts of growing-season length on growth and overwintering conditions on survival time using side-blotched lizards (Uta stansburiana). Experiments in replicate field enclosures revealed that fall growing-season length has a direct effect on overwintering body size. Laboratory experiments revealed that both size and overwintering temperature have direct effects on winter survival time. Larger lizards are more likely to survive longer regardless of winter temperature. Furthermore, animals in colder (but still mild) winter microenvironments are more likely to survive longer than those in warmer winter environments. These results indicate that warmer winters caused by global climate change have the potential to negatively affect ectotherm populations. However, longer growing seasons may offset losses by allowing additional growth and energy storage. Thus, environmental alterations associated with climate change may be simultaneously beneficial and detrimental, and the long-term persistence of certain organisms may depend on the relative strength of their effects.  相似文献

Reproduction is thought to entail costs, but assessing survival costs associated with maturation as organisms express reproductive genes for the first time is problematic because many will die prior to expressing a phenotype. We quantified selection acting on this invisible fraction by measuring selection on predicted breeding values for clutch size estimated from a multigenerational pedigree of side-blotched lizards in which clutch size was heritable (h2=0.25+/-0.04). The survival effects of predicted breeding values for clutch size during maturation, however, differed between males and females indicating ontogenetic conflict. Increased mortality during maturation was associated with lower predicted breeding values for clutch size for females, but higher predicted breeding values for males who do not produce a clutch. Genetic correlations between clutch size and male and female survival were consistent with calculated selection differentials. Experimental yolk removal did not affect progeny survival during maturation, indicating that selection on maturing progeny was not due to confounding yolk-volume maternal effects, and hormone manipulations confirmed clutch size as the target of viability selection during maturation. Such episodes of selection prior to phenotypic expression of the trait will have important consequences for the evolution of reproductive investment.  相似文献

Metabolism is thought to play an important role in shaping behaviour, ecology and physiology in animals. To study the changes of metabolism among different ages or generations as well as the repeatability during the ontogeny, we carried out the research in Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), which covered two generations’ life. Meanwhile, we estimated the among-family variations to facilitate the heritability evaluation. Resting metabolic rate within the thermoneutral zone, resting metabolic rate at 5 °C, non-shivering thermogenesis and maximal metabolic rate during thermogenesis in both juveniles and adults were simultaneously measured. Population-average values of aerobic traits were generally consistent among different ages or generations; however, there was no repeatability at the level of individual variation during the ontogeny, which indicated that the aerobic traits of the young were not good indicators for that of later life. At the same time, the coefficient of intraclass correlation for full sibs failed to reach statistical significance, suggesting that heritability of aerobic traits in Brandt's voles was not high.  相似文献

Previous studies in European starlings have concluded that conspecific crowding can be a significant stressor that is capable of simultaneously altering behavior, heart rate, and corticosterone (CORT) concentrations. It was hypothesized that the peptide hormone arginine vasotocin (AVT) has a role in the regulation of these three types of responses to crowding. Four male and four female resident starlings were submitted to nine combinations of 3 crowding treatments (0, 1, or 5 intruder starlings) and 3 subcutaneous injections (1, 4 microg AVT, and saline control). Resident starlings were given a treatment injection, their heart rate and behavior were monitored for 30 min, 0, 1, or 5 intruder Starlings were allowed to enter the residents cage, and HR and behavior were monitored for another 30 min. Blood samples were taken before and after all treatments to assess CORT concentrations. Exogenous AVT decreased the frequency of maintenance behaviors (feeding, drinking, preening, and beak wiping), as well as activity in resident starlings. Although aggressive behaviors upright posture, head feather expansion, and pecking) increased during crowding, these increases were significantly attenuated by AVT. Heart rate was significantly lower during these behavioral effects, and the CORT data indicate that the cardiovascular and behavioral effects are not dependent on significant increases in CORT. These data support the hypothesis that AVT's attenuation of general behavior and crowding induced aggression are modulated by a cardiovascular mechanism.  相似文献

Animals often exhibit individual variation in their behavioral responses to the same stimuli in the biotic or abiotic environment. To elucidate the endocrine mechanisms mediating such behavioral variation, we have been studying a species of lizard with two distinct male phenotypes. Here we document behavioral variation across years in one of the two male phenotypes of the tree lizard, Urosaurus ornatus, and present hormone data that support an endocrine mechanism underlying this behavioral variation. Nonterritorial male tree lizards appear to be nomadic rovers in some years and sedentary satellites in others, whereas territorial males are always territorial. This behavioral variation by nonterritorial males was correlated with environmental conditions. In environmentally harsher years (as assessed by rainfall), nonterritorial males appear to behave as nomads, whereas in more benign years they are more site-faithful. A between-year comparison of levels of corticosterone and testosterone for the two male phenotypes supports a model for how hormones underlie the males' reproductive tactics, particularly the nonterritorial males' behavioral plasticity. In an environmentally harsher (drier) year, both types of males had higher corticosterone levels than in a milder (wetter) year, but only nonterritorial males had lower testosterone in the relatively harsher year. We propose that disruptive selection for individual variation in hormonal responses to environmental cues may be a common mechanism underlying the evolution of alternative male reproductive tactics in this and other species.  相似文献

Many birds exhibit considerable phenotypic flexibility in metabolism to maintain thermoregulation or to conserve energy. This flexibility usually includes seasonal variation in metabolic rate. Seasonal changes in physiology and behavior of birds are considered to be a part of their adaptive strategy for survival and reproductive success. House Sparrows (Passer domesticus) are small passerines from Europe that have been successfully introduced to many parts of the world, and thus may be expected to exhibit high phenotypic flexibility in metabolic rate. Mass specific Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) were significantly higher in winter compared with summer, although there was no significant difference between body mass in summer and winter. A similar, narrow thermal neutral zone (25–28 °C) was observed in both seasons. Winter elevation of metabolic rate in House Sparrows was presumably related to metabolic or morphological adjustments to meet the extra energy demands of cold winters. Overall, House Sparrows showed seasonal metabolic acclimatization similar to other temperate wintering passerines. The improved cold tolerance was associated with a significant increase in VO2 in winter relative to summer. In addition, some summer birds died at 5 °C, whereas winter birds did not, further showing seasonal variation in cold tolerance. The increase in BMR of 120% in winter, compared to summer, is by far the highest recorded seasonal change so far in birds.  相似文献

The thermoregulatory characteristics of three species of Cryptomys from Zambia and Angola are examined and, together with published data on four other species of Cryptomys from southern Africa, used to determine whether scaling occurs in this genus of subterranean rodents. The thermoregulatory properties of acclimated giant Zambian mole-rats, Cryptomys mechowi ( =267 g), Angolan mole-rats, Cryptomys bocagei ( =94 g) and Zambian common mole-rats Cryptomys hottentotus amatus ( =77 g) are as follows. Mean resting metabolic rates (RMRs) within the respective thermoneutral zones were 0.60±0.08 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=12) for C. mechowi; 0.74±0.06 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 (n=8) for C. bocagei and 0.63±0.06 cm3O2 g-1 h-1 (n=21) for C. h. amatus. The thermoneutral zones (TNZs) of all three species are narrow: 29–30°C for C. mechowi; 31.5–32.5°C for C. bocagei and 28–32° C for C. h. amatus. The increase in mean RMR at the lowest temperatures tested (15° C for C. mechowi, 18° C for C. bocagei and C. h. amatus) was 2.35, 2.2 and 3.82 times their RMR in the TNZ respectively. Body temperatures are low, 34±0.53° C (n=24) for C. mechowi, 33.7±0.32° C (n=20) for C. bocagei and 33.8±0.43° C (n=40) for C. h amatus. At the lower limit of thermoneutrality, conductances are 0.09±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=30) in C. mechowi; 0.12±0.01 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=20) in C. bocagei and 0.12±0.03 cm3 O2 g-1 h-1 °C-1 (n=32) in C. h. amatus. The range in mean body mass among the seven species of Cryptomys examined for scaling was 60 g (C. darlingi) to 267 g (C. mechowi). There is no clear relationship between RMR within the TNZ and body mass. The resultant relationship is represented by the power curve RMR=2.45 mass-0.259.  相似文献

As part of the quantitative investigations into the bioenergetic relationships of the Barents Sea capelin, Mallotus villosus villosus (Müller, 1776), resting metabolic rates were examined in the oviferous and post-spawning fish in order to provide insights to aerobic scaling and the basal energetic costs associated with reproduction. Aerobic scaling of the different categories of sexually mature fish (body weight, W=13-54 g) could be expressed as: QO2=0.106W1.049 (oviferous fish; N=11), QO2=0.411W0.430 (post-spawning females; N=9), and QO2=0.075W1.012 (post-spawning males; N=14), where QO2 is the oxygen consumption (ml O2 h−1) per fish. The weight specific oxygen consumption of oviferous capelin was about 30% higher (∼125 ml O2 kg−1 h−1) compared to those of the post-spawning fish (79-87 ml O2 kg−1 h−1). The results are discussed in context with other empirical studies on the aerobic scaling and metabolic costs involved with the build-up of roe in the fish.  相似文献

Here we study the role of Shh signaling in tooth morphogenesis and successional tooth initiation in snakes and lizards (Squamata). By characterizing the expression of Shh pathway receptor Ptc1 in the developing dentitions of three species (Eublepharis macularius, Python regius, and Pogona vitticeps) and by performing gain- and loss-of-function experiments, we demonstrate that Shh signaling is active in the squamate tooth bud and is required for its normal morphogenesis. Shh apparently mediates tooth morphogenesis by separate paracrine- and autocrine-mediated functions. According to this model, paracrine Shh signaling induces cell proliferation in the cervical loop, outer enamel epithelium, and dental papilla. Autocrine signaling within the stellate reticulum instead appears to regulate cell survival. By treating squamate dental explants with Hh antagonist cyclopamine, we induced tooth phenotypes that closely resemble the morphological and differentiation defects of vestigial, first-generation teeth in the bearded dragon P. vitticeps. Our finding that these vestigial teeth are deficient in epithelial Shh signaling further corroborates that Shh is needed for the normal development of teeth in snakes and lizards. Finally, in this study, we definitively refute a role for Shh signaling in successional dental lamina formation and conclude that other pathways regulate tooth replacement in squamates.  相似文献

Thermoregulatory responses are known to differ seasonally in endotherms and this is often dependent on the environment and region they are resident. Holarctic animals are exposed to severe winters and substantial seasonal variation in ambient temperature. In contrast, those in the Afrotropics have less severe winters, but greater variation in temperature, rainfall and net primary production. These environmental factors place different selection pressures on physiological responses in endotherms. In this study, metabolic rate (VO2) and body temperature (Tb) were measured in captive bred Rock Kestrels (Falco rupicolus) from the Afrotropics after a period of summer and winter acclimatisation. Resting metabolic rate was significantly lower after the winter acclimatisation period than after the summer acclimatisation period, and there was a shift in the thermoneutral zone from 20–33 °C in summer to 15–30 °C in winter. However, no significant difference in basal metabolic rate between summer and winter was found. The results show that Rock Kestrels reduce energy expenditure at low ambient temperatures in winter as expected in an Afrotropical species.  相似文献

Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are the main bivalves cultured in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Thermaikos gulf North of Greece. Global warming might affect these cultures since increases in the sea temperatures especially during summertime and may cause mass mortalities. Thus projections of the effects of global warming and the knowledge of the mechanisms of thermal limitation and adaptation are considered important in this context. In the present work we studied the seasonal expression of Hsp70 and Hsp90 of aquacultured mussels in nature in an effort to examine whether mussels are seasonally thermally stressed. Moreover we determined the activity of the key glycolytic enzyme PK in order to examine seasonal changes in the metabolic profile. The present data showed a biphasic seasonal pattern in the expression of Hsps in the mantle and PAM of M. galloprovincialis. The expression of inducible Hsp72 and Hsp90 increased between February and mid April, and remained constant or decreased slightly by the end of May. Hsps expression started again in early June leading to a gradual increase by mid July and remained by the end of August. The pattern of the HSR indicates increased protein turnover or protein damage in the tissues of aquacultured M. galloprovincialis between winter and summer seasons. The induction temperature is probably limited, and beyond some upper limits there is no further change in the HSR induction temperatures and the HSR sets in. PK activity in the mantle was significantly higher in winter than in spring. Early May saw a reactivation of PK to higher than spring values. Similar to mantle PK, PK activity in PAM was significantly higher in winter than in spring. A slight reactivation was observed by the end of August.  相似文献
