Denitrification of a synthetic wastewater containing nitrates and methanol as carbon source was carried out in two systems – a fluidized‐bed biofilm reactor (FBBR) and a stirred tank reactor (STR) – using Pseudomonas denitrificans over a period of five months. Nitrogen loading was varied during operation of both reactors to assess differences in the response to transient conditions. Experimental data were analyzed to obtain a comparison of denitrification kinetics in biofilm and suspended growth reactors. The comparison showed that the volumetric degradation capacity in the FBBR (5.36 kg N · m–3 · d–1) was higher than in the STR, due to higher biomass concentration (10 kg BM · m–3 vs 1.2 kg BM m–3).  相似文献

A thermophilic upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor was combined with a mesophilic aerobic fluidized bed (AFB) reactor for treatment of a medium strength wastewater with 2,700?mg COD?l?1. The COD removal efficiency reached 75% with a removal rate of 0.2 g COD?l?1 h?1 at an overall hydraulic retention time 14 hours. The distribution of microbial activity and its change with hydraulic retention time in the two reactors were investigated by measuring ATP concentration in the reactors and specific ATP content of the biomass. In the UASB reactor, the difference in specific ATP was significant between the sludge bed and blanket solution (0.02?mg ATP g VS?1 versus 0.85?mg ATP g VS?1) even though the ATP concentrations in these two zones were similar. A great pH gradient up to 4 was developed along the UASB reactor. Since a high ATP or biological activity in the blanket solution could only be maintained in a narrow pH range from 6.5 to 7.5, the sludge granules showed a high pH tolerance and buffering capacity up to pH 11. The suspended biomass in AFB reactor had a higher specific ATP than the biomass fixed in polyurethane carriers (1.6?mg ATP g VS?1 versus 1.1?mg ATP g VS?1), which implies a starvation status of the immobilized cells due to mass transfer limitation. The aerobes had to work under starvation conditions in this polishing reactor. The anaerobic biomass brought into AFB reactor contributed to an increase in suspended solids, but not the COD removal because of its fast deactivation under aerobic conditions. A second order kinetic model was proposed for ATP decline of the anaerobes. The results on distribution of microbial activity in the two reactors as well as its change with hydraulic retention time lead to further performance improvement of the combined anaerobic/aerobic reactor system.  相似文献

Three anaerobic downflow stationary fixed-film (DSFF) reactors using multiple vertical clay channels of different heights (31, 92 and 183 cm) and treating bean blanching waste showed improved performance and mixing characteristics with increased reactor height. A start-up period of 100 days was necessary to achieve the best performance in terms of loading rate (up to 9.5 kg Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) m?3 d?1) and methane production rate (up to 2.7 m3 m?3 d?1). During this period, differences in performance could only be related to the surface-to-volume ratio. At steady-state, mixing analysis indicated that the reactors deviated from the perfect-mixed pattern. Some dead space and shortcircuiting occurred. The amount of dead space due to biomass accumulation decreased as the reactor height increased (up to 44% for the shortest reactor). The COD removal efficiency was dependent on loading rate, decreasing from 90% at a loading rate of 1.0 kg COD m?3 d?1 to 75% at 7.0 kg COD m?3 d?1. However, the effect was more pronounced in the shortest reactor than in the tallest one. The improvement in mixing characteristics in the tallest reactor could be related to the higher liquid velocity inside channels which in turn permitted better support utilization and concomitant better COD removal. Data also suggest that it may be preferable to scale-up vertically rather than horizontally in order to maximize the liquid velocity in the channels.  相似文献

The degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was investigated under fermentative-methanogenic conditions for up to 60 days in the presence of anaerobic biomass from a full-scale UASB reactor. The low methane yields in the PCBs-spiked batch reactors suggested that the biomass had an inhibitory effect on the methanogenic community. Reactors containing PCBs and co-substrates (ethanol/sodium formate) exhibited substantial PCB reductions from 0.7 to 0.2 mg mL?1. For the Bacteria domain, the PCBs-spiked reactors were grouped with the PCB-free reactors with a similarity of 55 %, which suggested the selection of a specific population in the presence of PCBs. Three genera of bacteria were found exclusively in the PCB-spiked reactors and were identified using pyrosequencing analysis, Sedimentibacter, Tissierela and Fusibacter. Interestingly, the Sedimentibacter, which was previously correlated with the reductive dechlorination of PCBs, had the highest relative abundance in the RCS-PCB (7.4 %) and RCS-PCB-PF (12.4 %) reactors. Thus, the anaerobic sludge from the UASB reactor contains bacteria from the Firmicutes phylum that are capable of degrading PCBs.  相似文献

A combined system designed by converting the flow mixing chamber of an anaerobic filter into an UASB resulted in an increased efficiency of removal of organic matter of 92% and in a gas production of 4.64 l·l−1·d−1, at the highest organic loading rate tested compared with that of the unmodified anaerobic filter. Both reactors were tested using dairy industry wastewater at identical operating conditions at 30°C and organic loading rate between 1 to 8 g COD·l−1·d−1.  相似文献

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors were started up, using a stepped loading regime, on a dairy waste prepared from raw ice-cream production waste from an ice-cream manufacturing plant. One UASB was supplemented with methanol. Granules were detected in the methanol-fed UASB at 3 weeks after start-up. The maximum load of 6·7 kgCOD m−3 day−1 with an HRT of 0·75 days could not be sustained during the 73 days of operation. Complete granulation had, however, occurred by the 4th week. Methanol addition at start-up aided rapid biomass granulation, and enhanced the settling velocity and specific activity of the sludge. However, wash-out was severe and residual biomass was sensitive to methanol withdrawal and produced no net growth.  相似文献

The effect of three different types of glycerol on the performance of up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors treating potato processing wastewater was investigated. High COD removal efficiencies were obtained in both control and supplemented UASB reactors (around 85%). By adding 2 ml glycerol product per liter of raw wastewater, the biogas production could be increased by 0.74 l biogas ml−1 glycerol product, which leads to energy values in the range of 810–1270 kWhelectric per m3 product. Moreover, a better in-reactor biomass yield was observed for the supplemented UASB reactor (0.012 g VSS g−1 CODremoved) compared to the UASB control (0.002 g VSS g−1 CODremoved), which suggests a positive effect of glycerol on the sludge blanket growth.  相似文献

The effect of starch addition on the microbial composition and the biological conversion was investigated using two upflow anaerobic sludge bracket (UASB) reactors treating methanolic wastewater: one reactor was operated with starch addition, and another reactor was operated without starch addition. Approximately 300 days of operation were performed at 30 kg COD/m3/d, and then, the organic load of the reactors was gradually increased to 120 kg COD/m3/d. Successful operation was achieved at 30 kg COD/m3/d in both reactors; however, the methanol-fed reactor did not perform well at 120 kg COD/m3/d while the methanol-starch-fed reactor did. The granule analysis revealed the granule developed further only in the methanol-starch-fed reactor. The results of the microbial community analysis revealed more Methanosaeta cells were present in the methanol-starch-fed reactor, suggesting the degradation of starch produced acetate as an intermediate, which stimulated the growth of Methanosaeta cells responsible for the extension of granules.  相似文献

In recent years considerable effort has been made in the Netherlands toward the development of a more sophisticated anaerobic treatment process, suitable for treating low a strength wastes and for applications at liquid detention times of 3–4 hr. The efforts have resulted in new type of upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) process, which in recent 6 m3 pilot-plant experiments has shown to be capable of handling organic space loads of 15–40 kg chemical oxygen demand (COD)·m?3/day at 3–8 hr liquid detention times. In the first 200 m3 full-scale plant of the UASB concept, organic space loadings of up to 16 kg COD·m?3/day could be treated satisfactorily at a detention times of 4 hr, using sugar beet waste as feed. The main results obtained with the process in the laboratory as well as in 6 m3 pilot plant and 200 m3 full-scale experiments are presented and evaluated in this paper. Special attention is given to the main operating characteristics of the UASB reactor concept. Moreover, some preliminary results are presented of laboratory experiments concerning the use of the USB reactor concept for denitrification as well as for the acid formation step in anaerobic treatment. For both purposes the process looks feasible because very satisfactory results with respect to denitrification and acid formation can be achieved at very high hydraulic loads (12 day?1) and high organic loading rates, i.e., 20 kg COD·m?3/day in the denitrification and 60–80 kg COD·m?3/day in the acid formation experiments.  相似文献

Aims: The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of a continuous reactor for psychrophilic anaerobic wastewater treatment by using the sludge from cold natural environment. Methods and Results: Six sludge samples (S1–S6) were collected from different cold natural locations to select sludge with high anaerobic microbial activity under low temperatures. After a 225‐day incubation, the maximum specific methane production rate of a waterfowl lake sediment (S1) at 15°C (70·5 mLCH4 gVSS?1 day?1) was much higher than all other samples. S1 was thus chosen as the seed sludge for the reactor treating synthetic brewery wastewater at 15°C, by immobilizing the micro‐organisms on polyurethane foam carriers. The chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency reached over 80% after 240‐day operation at an organic loading rate of 5·3 kg m?3 day?1, and significant enrichment of biomass was observed. Clone libraries of the microbial communities in the inoculum had high diversities for both archaea and bacteria. Along with a decrease in microbial community diversities, the dominant bacteria (79·5%) at the end of the operation represented the phylum Firmicutes, while the dominant archaeon (41·5%) showed a similarity of 98% with the psychrotolerant methanogen Methanosarcina lacustris. Conclusions: The possibility of using anaerobic micro‐organisms from cold environments in anaerobic wastewater treatment under psychrophilic conditions is supported by these findings. Significance and Impact of the Study: This study enriches the theory on microbial community and the application on anaerobic treatment of sludge from cold natural environments.  相似文献

The growth of granules on a phenol synthetic medium and the methanogenic fermentation of industrial phenolic wastewater from a steel factory in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor were investigated. Total granular sludge concentration retained in the UASB reactor was 6.7 g MLSS/l (6.0 g MLVSS/l) during the 10 months' operation on the phenol synthetic medium. This realized a maximum phenol removal rate of 2.2 g/l·d (phenol concentration of influent = 500 mg/l), which corresponded to 5.2 g COD/l·d at space velocity (SV) of 4.4 d−1. The granules formed were of relatively small size ranging from 0.61 to 0.77 mm, and had a relatively low density of 0.013–0.023 g MLVSS/cm3 and low specific gravity (1.11) due to very low ash content (8.7–11.9%). Electron microscopic analysis showed that Methanothrix spp. appeared dominantly on the granule surface as well as within it. The specific metabolic activities of bacterial trophic groups were the highest for H2 followed by acetate, benzoate, phenol, and propionate. In the case of industrial phenolic wastewater, although phenol efficiency was only 50% at SV of 0.4 d−1, when the wastewater was diluted twofold and the treated wastewater was recycled at SV of 7.3 d−1, the removal efficiencies of phenol and CODcr were restored to 90% (influent=400 mg/l) and 80% (influent=5,000 mg/l), respectively. It was suggested that recycling of the treated wastewater might be improved by partly degrading unknown toxic compounds contained in phenolic wastewater.  相似文献

The simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process for treating domestic wastewater was investigated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated with air flow rate of 500 L h?1 at 30 °C. Domestic wastewater was used as influent and Kaldnes rings were used as biomass carriers. In the beginning, long aeration condition was implemented to cultivate nitrification biofilm. Afterwards, intermittent aerobic condition was conducted during the cycle operation. The influent organic matter loading rate was improved by reducing the aeration and mixing times. Consequently, when the SNAD biofilm reactor was fed with the organic matter loading rate of 0.77 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the bio-bubbles appeared in the reactor and the total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removal efficiency decreased. After the organic matter loading rate decreased to 0.67 (kg COD m?3 d?1), the reactor showed excellent nitrogen removal performance. The TIN removal efficiency varied between 80 and 90 %, and the average TIN removal loading rate was 0.22 (kg TIN m?3 d?1). Additionally, the scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation confirmed that the anammox bacteria located in the inner part of the carriers. Finally, the microbial community analysis of 16S rRNA gene cloning revealed that the anammox bacteria on the carriers consisted of three main genuses: Candidatus Brocadia sp., Candidatus Brocadia caroliniensis and Candidatus Brocadia fulgida.  相似文献

A kinetic modeling-based study was carried out to evaluate the start-up performance of a 10-L up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating municipal wastewater under different organic and hydraulic loading conditions. The reactor was operated for 105 days (around 4 months) below 20 °C and with three different hydraulic retention times of 24, 12 and 5 h. Imposed volumetric organic loading rates (OLR) ranged from 0.57 (±0.05) to 11.78 (±0.85) kg TCOD/m3-day. Although relatively high incoming volumetric OLR values were employed to the system, the UASB reactor demonstrated a favorable performance on the anaerobic treatability of municipal wastewater, and no process failure was recorded in the start-up stage. On the basis of experimental results, the modified Stover–Kincannon model was successfully applied to define the start-up kinetics with a very high value of the correlation coefficient (R = 0.9729). Maximum substrate utilization rate constant and saturation constant of the modified Stover–Kincannon model were determined as U max = 1.996 g/L-day and K B = 1.536 g/L-day, respectively.  相似文献

The application of low-temperature (10 °C) anaerobic digestion (LtAD) for the treatment of complex dairy-based wastewater in an inverted fluidised bed (IFB) reactor was investigated. Inadequate mixing intensity provoked poor hydrolysis of the substrate (mostly protein), which resulted in low chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency throughout the trial, averaging ~69 % at the best operational period. Overgrowth of the attached biomass to the support particles (Extendospheres) induced bed stratification by provoking agglutination of the particles and supporting their washout by sedimentation, which contributed to unstable bioprocess performance at the organic loading rates (OLRs) between 0.5 and 5 kg COD m?3 day?1. An applied OLR above 2 kg COD m?3 day?1 additionally promoted acidification and strongly influenced the microbial composition and dynamics. Hydrogenotrophic methanogens appeared to be the mostly affected group by the Extendospheres particle washout as a decrease in their abundance was observed by quantitative PCR analysis towards the end of the trial, although the specific methanogenic activity and maximum substrate utilisation rate on H2/CO2 indicated high metabolic activity and preference towards hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis of the reactor biomass at this stage. The bacterial community in the bioreactor monitored via denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) also suggested an influence of OLR stress on bacterial community structure and population dynamics. The data presented in this work can provide useful information in future optimisation of fluidised reactors intended for digestion of complex industrial wastewaters during LtAD.  相似文献

Wine production is one of the leading sectors of the food processing industry. The wine industry produces a large amount of wastewater characterized by a high strength in terms of organic pollution and large variability throughout the year. Most of the organic matter is soluble and easily biodegradable. On the other hand, nitrogen and phosphorous are lacking. The aerobic and anaerobic processes are largely applied for winery wastewater treatment because they can quickly react to changes in the organic loading. This review analyzes e applied biological systems, considering both aerobic and anaerobic processes, and different reactor configurations. The performances of different biological processes are evaluated in terms of operational conditions (organic loading rate and hydraulic retention time). Aerobic processes can guarantee chemical oxygen demand removal up to 98% for organic loading rates of some 1-2?kg of chemical oxygen demand m?3d?1 but requires good aeration systems to supply the required process oxygen. The management cost of these processes could be high considering the power density in the range 60-70?W m?3reactor and that nutrients should be added to support biomass growth. On the other hand, anaerobic processes are able to face high organic loads with low running costs, but COD removal is generally limited to 90%. Combination of the two treatment systems (anaerobic followed by aerobic) could reduce management costs and meet high discharge standards.  相似文献

The present work evaluated biomass productivity, carbon dioxide fixation rate, and biochemical composition of two microalgal species, Phaeodactylum tricornutum (Bacillariophyta) and Tetradesmus obliquus (Chlorophyta), cultivated indoors in high-technology photobioreactors (HT-PBR) and outdoors both in pilot ponds and low-technology photobioreactors in a greenhouse in southern Italy. Microalgae were grown in standard media, under nitrogen starvation, and in two liquid digestates obtained from anaerobic digestion of agro-zootechnical and vegetable biomass. P. tricornutum, cultivated in semi-continuous mode in indoor HT-PBRs with standard medium, showed a biomass productivity of 21.0?±?2.3 g m?2 d?1. Applying nitrogen starvation, the lipid productivity increased from 2.3 up to 4.5?±?0.5 g m?2 d?1, with a 24 % decrease of biomass productivity. For T. obliquus, a biomass productivity of 9.1?±?0.9 g m?2 d?1 in indoor HT-PBR was obtained using standard medium. Applying liquid digestates as fertilizers in open ponds, T. obliquus gave a biomass productivity (10.8?±?2.0 g m?2 d?1) not statistically different from complete medium such as P. tricornutum (6.5?±?2.2 g m?2 d?1). The biochemical data showed that the fatty acid composition of the microalgal biomass was affected by the different cultivation conditions for both microalgae. In conclusion, it was found that the microalgal productivity in standard medium was about doubled in HT-PBR compared to open ponds for P. tricornutum and was about 20 % higher for T. obliquus.  相似文献

The performance of a full-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor treating brewery wastewater was investigated by microbial analysis and kinetic modelling. The microbial community present in the granular sludge was detected using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) and further confirmed using polymerase chain reaction. A group of 16S rRNA based fluorescent probes and primers targeting Archaea and Eubacteria were selected for microbial analysis. FISH results indicated the presence and dominance of a significant amount of Eubacteria and diverse group of methanogenic Archaea belonging to the order Methanococcales, Methanobacteriales, and Methanomicrobiales within in the UASB reactor. The influent brewery wastewater had a relatively high amount of volatile fatty acids chemical oxygen demand (COD), 2005 mg/l and the final COD concentration of the reactor was 457 mg/l. The biogas analysis showed 60–69 % of methane, confirming the presence and activities of methanogens within the reactor. Biokinetics of the degradable organic substrate present in the brewery wastewater was further explored using Stover and Kincannon kinetic model, with the aim of predicting the final effluent quality. The maximum utilization rate constant U max and the saturation constant (K B) in the model were estimated as 18.51 and 13.64 g/l/day, respectively. The model showed an excellent fit between the predicted and the observed effluent COD concentrations. Applicability of this model to predict the effluent quality of the UASB reactor treating brewery wastewater was evident from the regression analysis (R 2?=?0.957) which could be used for optimizing the reactor performance.  相似文献

Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (n-damo) is mediated by bacteria that anaerobically oxidize methane coupled with nitrite reduction and is a potential bioprocess for wastewater treatment. In this work, the effect of reactor configuration on n-damo bacterial cultivation was investigated. A magnetically stirred gas lift reactor (MSGLR), a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR) were selected to cultivate the bacteria. Microbial community was monitored by using quantitative PCR, 16S rRNA gene sequencing, pmoA gene sequencing, and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The effects of substrate inhibition, methane mass transfer, and biomass washout in the three reactors were focused on. The results indicated that the MSGLR had the best performance among the three reactor systems, with the highest total and specific n-damo activities. Its maximum volumetric nitrogen removal rate was up to 76.9 mg N L?1 day?1, which was higher than previously reported values (5.1–37.8 mg N L?1 d?1).  相似文献

A cyclone reactor for microbial fermentation processes was developed with high oxygen transfer capabilities. Three geometrically similar cyclone reactors with 0.5?l, 2.5?l and 15?l liquid volume, respectively, were characterized with respect to oxygen mass transfer, mixing time and residence time distribution. Semi-empirically correlations for prediction of oxygen mass transfer and mixing times were identified for scale-up of cyclone reactors. A volumetric oxygen mass transfer coefficient k L a of 1.0?s?1 (available oxygen transfer rate with air: 29?kg?m?3?h?1) was achieved with the cyclone reactor at a volumetric power input of 40?kW?m?3 and an aeration gas flow rate of 0.2?s?1. Continuous methanol controlled production of formate dehydrogenase (FDH) with Candida boidinii in a 15?l cyclone reactor resulted in more than 100% improvement in dry cell mass concentration (64.5?g?l?1) and in about 100% improvement in FDH space-time yield (300?U?l?1?h?1) compared to steady state results of a continuous stirred tank reactor.  相似文献

The formation of anaerobic granular sludge on wastewater from sugar-beet processing was examined in upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors. Two strategies were investigated: addition of high-energy substrate, i.e. sugars, and varying the reactor liquid surface tension. When there were insufficient amounts of sugars i.e. less than 7% of the chemical O2 demand of the influent, no granulation was observed; moreover lowering the reactor liquid surface tension below 48 mN/m was found to increase biomass wash-out. On the other hand, when there were sufficient sugars, granular sludge growth occurred; moreover operating the reactor at a low reactor liquid surface tension reduced biomass wash-out and increased granular yield.  相似文献
