The stable oxygen isotope (δ 18O) composition of Austrocedrus chilensis (D. Don) Endl. (Cupressaceae) tree rings potentially provide retrospective views of changes in environment and climate in the semi-arid lands of Patagonia. We report the development of the first annually resolved δ 18O tree-ring chronology obtained from natural forests of the foothills of the northwestern Patagonian Andes. The isotope record spans between 1890 and 1994 AD. We explore the probable links between this record and the climate of the region. Air temperatures during summer conditions are significantly, but not strongly, inversely correlated with annual δ 18O values from Austrocedrus tree rings. The strongest correlations are between the southern oscillation index (SOI) and the tree rings. The existence of millennial-age Austrocedrus trees in northern Patagonia provides interesting possibilities for examining these climate-related isotopic signals over most of the last 1,000 years.

Tree-ring widths and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of five European larch trees from Lötschental, Switzerland were investigated for the period 1900–2004. The objective was to test the suitability of each of these parameters for high-frequency climate reconstructions. This is of special interest with regard to the problem of cyclic larch budmoth (LBM) infestations of alpine larch trees. The results clearly demonstrate that tree-ring width chronologies are not suitable for high-frequency reconstructions because infestations lead to variably reduced tree-ring increments, largely suppressing climate signals. On the other hand, the stable isotope chronologies proved less affected by larch budmoth outbreaks, independent of the strength of the infestations. The correlation of the carbon isotopes with summer temperatures was especially high (r = 0.73) and with precipitation lower but nevertheless significant (r = ?0.43). Oxygen isotopes were also correlated with summer temperature (r = 0.46); however, a certain perturbation of normal oxygen isotope signatures due to LBM outbreaks was evident. Contrary to tree-ring widths, none of the LBM outbreaks caused a significant disturbance of the current year’s isotopic climate signal and, most importantly, there were no delayed effects in the following years. Thus, stable carbon isotopes in tree-ring chronologies of the European larch provide an excellent opportunity for high-frequency temperature reconstructions.

Defoliation by insects is a major disturbance influencing the forest dynamics in many ecosystems and can affect forest productivity worldwide. The main objective of this research was to further investigate the potential use of tree-ring widths and isotopic compositions to identify different degrees of past spruce budworm defoliation episodes. A secondary objective was to understand the responses of trees to defoliation episodes using carbon isotopes as a proxy to provide insights into subsequent physiological changes. Tree-ring widths, carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions in wood cellulose and gas exchange measurements were compared among 288 balsam fir (Abies balsamea Mill.) seedlings grown in a controlled experiment that involved different intensities of defoliation. Observations were performed over four growing periods. Moderate to heavy-defoliated seedlings showed reduced radial growth and enriched their cellulose carbon isotopic composition probably as a result of mobilized stored carbohydrates enriched in 13C. Less severely defoliated seedlings did not show significant reductions in growth and 13C enrichments. The gas exchange observations and wood cellulose oxygen isotope compositions do not suggest photosynthetic compensation in the remaining needles although a positive trend in the response of both assimilation rate (A) and stomatal conductance (gs) to defoliation was observed in the first growing period. Thus it remains open as to which mechanisms were employed to compensate for the reduced carbon source in the mildly defoliated seedlings. While further investigations are advised, the results of this study still help promote the utilization of tree-ring widths in combination with carbon isotopic compositions for reconstructing severe past defoliation events.

In harvested forests, the bird community is largely determined by stand structure, which itself is determined by forestry practices. This study aimed to identify habitat variables determining the presence of Corsican Nuthatch Sitta whiteheadi – a threatened island endemic – in harvested Corsican Pine Pinus nigra laricio woods, with the aim of mitigating the impact of timber harvest on the bird. Comparison of occupied and unoccupied plots showed that this bird is found mostly in pure Corsican Pine stands, and is absent when more than 50% of trees are not this species. Nests were built in decaying pine snags between 20 and 100 cm diameter at breast height (dbh), but birds avoided stands with live pines < 70 cm dbh, and selected stands with pines > 80 cm dbh. Conservation of Corsican Nuthatch therefore depends on maintaining harvest rotations of more than 200 years, reducing the size of felling coupes in clear‐cutting systems or, preferably, practising selective cutting, maintaining a sufficient density of old trees and snags, and checking the encroachment of other tree species into Corsican Pine stands.

Larch budmoth (LBM, Zeiraphera diniana Gn.) outbreaks cause discernable physical alteration of cell growth in tree rings of host subalpine larch (Larix decidua Mill.) in the European Alps. However, it is not clear if these outbreaks also impact isotopic signatures in tree-ring cellulose, thereby masking climatic signals. We compared LBM outbreak events in stable carbon and oxygen isotope chronologies of larch and their corresponding tree-ring widths from two high-elevation sites (1800–2200 m a.s.l.) in the Swiss Alps for the period AD 1900–2004 against isotope data obtained from non-host spruce (Picea abies). At each site, two age classes of tree individuals (150–250 and 450–550 years old) were sampled. Inclusion of the latter age class enabled one chronology to be extended back to AD 1650, and a comparison with long-term monthly resolved temperature data. Within the constraints of this local study, we found that: (1) isotopic ratios in tree rings of larch provide a strong and consistent climatic signal of temperature; (2) at all sites the isotope signatures were not disturbed by LBM outbreaks, as shown, for example, by exceptionally high significant correlations between non-host spruce and host larch chronologies; (3) below-average July to August temperatures and LBM defoliation events have been coupled for more than three centuries. Dampening of Alps-wide LBM cyclicity since the 1980s and the coincidence of recently absent cool summers in the European Alps reinforce the assumption of a strong coherence between summer temperatures and LBM defoliation events. Our results demonstrate that stable isotopes in tree-ring cellulose of larch are an excellent climate proxy enabling the analysis of climate-driven changes of LBM cycles in the long term.

Stable isotopic ratios integrate ecosystem variability while reflecting change in both environmental and biological processes. At sites, where climate does not strongly limit tree growth, co-occurring trees may display large discrepancies in stable oxygen isotopic ratios (δ18O) due to the interplay between biological processes (competition for light and nutrients, individual tree physiology, etc.) and climate. For a better quantification of the isotope variability within and among trees, the climatic and/or individual tree effects on seasonal δ18O variations in precipitation, soil water, leaf water and leaf organic material (whole leaf, cellulose and starch) and annual δ18O variations in tree-ring cellulose for Fagus sylvatica (Fs), Quercus robur (Qr), Carpinus betulus (Cb) and Pinus sylvestris (Ps) were studied in a mature temperate forest in Switzerland, using a mixed linear regression model technique. Furthermore, the influence of environmental factors on δ18O was assessed by means of three common isotope fractionation models. Our statistical analysis showed that except for Ps, a greater portion of δ18O variance in leaf compounds can be explained by individual tree effects, compared to temperature. Concerning tree-ring cellulose, only Fs and Ps show a significant temperature signal (maximum 12% of the variance explained), while the individual tree effect significantly explains δ18O for all species for a period of 38 years. Large species differences resulted in a limited ability of the isotope fractionation models to predict measured values. Overall, we conclude that in a diverse mixed forest stand, individual tree responses reduce the potential extraction of a temperature signal from δ18O.

Tree-ring width of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr., ratios of stable isotopes of C (δ13C) and O (δ18O) of whole wood and cellulose chronologies were obtained for the northern part of central Siberia (Tura, Russia) for the period 1864–2006. A strong decrease in the isotope ratios of O and C (after atmospheric δ13C corrections) and tree-ring width was observed for the period 1967–2005, while weather station data show a decrease in July precipitation, along with increasing July air temperature and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Temperature at the end of May and the whole month of June mainly determines tree radial growth and marks the beginning of the vegetation period in this region. A positive correlation between tree-ring width and July precipitation was found for the calibration period 1929–2005. Positive significant correlations between C isotope chronologies and temperatures of June and July were found for whole wood and cellulose and negative relationships with July precipitation. These relationships are strengthened when the likely physiological response of trees to increased CO2 is taken into account (by applying a recently developed δ13C correction). For the O isotope ratios, positive relationships with annual temperature, VPD of July and a negative correlation with annual precipitation were observed. The δ18O in tree rings may reflect annual rather than summer temperatures, due to the late melting of the winter snow and its contribution to the tree water supply in summer. We observed a clear change in the isotope and climate trends after the 1960s, resulting in a drastic change in the relationship between C and O isotope ratios from a negative to a positive correlation. According to isotope fractionation models, this indicates reduced stomatal conductance at a relatively constant photosynthetic rate, as a response of trees to water deficit for the last half century in this permafrost region.

We investigated the variability of tree-ring width, wood density and 13C/12C in beech tree rings (Fagus sylvatica L.), and analyzed the influence of climatic variables and carbohydrate storage on these parameters. Wood cores were taken from dominant beech trees in three stands in Germany and Italy. We used densitometry to obtain density profiles of tree rings and laser-ablation-combustion-GC-IRMS to estimate carbon isotope composition (δ 13C) of wood. The sensitivity of ring width, wood density and δ 13C to climatic variables differed; with tree-ring width responding to environmental conditions (temperature or precipitation) during the first half of a growing season and maximum density correlated with temperatures in the second part of a growing season (July–September). δ 13C variations indicate re-allocation and storage processes and effects of drought during the main growing season. About 20% of inter-annual variation of tree-ring width was explained by the tree-ring width of the previous year. This was confirmed by δ 13C of wood which showed a contribution of stored carbohydrates to growth in spring and a storage effect that competes with growth in autumn. Only mid-season δ 13C of wood was related to concurrent assimilation and climate. The comparison of seasonal changes in tree-ring maximum wood density and isotope composition revealed that an increasing seasonal water deficit changes the relationship between density and 13C composition from a negative relation in years with optimal moisture to a positive relationship in years with strong water deficit. The climate signal, however, is over-ridden by effects of stand density and crown structure (e.g., by forest management). There was an unexpected high variability in mid season δ 13C values of wood between individual trees (−31 to −24‰) which was attributed to competition between dominant trees as indicated by crown area, and microclimatological variations within the canopy. Maximum wood density showed less variation (930–990 g cm−3). The relationship between seasonal changes in tree-ring structure and 13C composition can be used to study carbon storage and re-allocation, which is important for improving models of tree-ring growth and carbon isotope fractionation. About 20–30% of the tree-ring is affected by storage processes. The effects of storage on tree-ring width and the effects of forest structure put an additional uncertainty on using tree rings of broad leaved trees for climate reconstruction.

Sub-fossil wood is often affected by the decaying process that introduces uncertainties in the measurement of oxygen and carbon stable isotope composition in cellulose. Although the cellulose stable isotopes are widely used as climatic proxies, our understanding of processes controlling their behavior is very limited. We present here a comparative study of stable oxygen and carbon isotope ratios in tree ring cellulose in decayed and non-decayed wood samples of Swiss stone pine (Pinus cembra) trees. The intra-ring stable isotope variability (around the circumference of a single ring) was between 0.1 and 0.5‰ for δ18O values and between 0.5 and 1.6‰ for δ13C values for both decayed and non-decayed wood. Observed intra-tree δ18O variability is less than that reported in the literature (0.5–1.5‰), however, for δ13C it is larger than the reported values (0.7–1.2‰). The inter-tree variability for non-decayed wood ranges between 1.1 and 2.3‰ for δ18O values, and between 2 and 4.7‰ for δ13C values. The inter-tree differences for δ18O values are similar to those reported in the literature (1–2‰ for oxygen and 1–3‰ for carbon) but are larger for δ13C values. We have found that the differences for δ18O and δ13C values between decayed and non-decayed wood are smaller than the variation among different trees from the same site, suggesting that the decayed wood can be used for isotopic paleoclimate research.

Tree-rings have frequently been used for dating of trees and to determine annual growth increments and forest dynamics, but little is known in tropical conditions about their utilization for environmental monitoring. This paper presents the results of Araucaria columnaris tree-ring characterization by wood anatomy and X-ray densitometric analysis and the determination of Pb concentration. Core samples from twelve araucaria trees were extracted from two sites exposed to air pollution due to intense traffic of vehicles and industrial activities. The tree-rings distinctly presented radial variation in early-latewood thickness and density, and characteristics of juvenile and mature wood. Anatomical and X-ray densitometric analysis were useful to delimit the tree-ring boundaries and to date the tree-rings, as well as to prove the annual formation. The lead concentration in annual araucaria tree-rings, analyzed with graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry, indicated the seasonal presence of the heavy metal in the environment during the 30 years studied, although the Pb did not affect tree growth.

The carbon and oxygen stable isotope composition of wood cellulose ( δ 13Ccellulose and δ 18Ocellulose, respectively) reveal well-defined seasonal variations that contain valuable records of past climate, leaf gas exchange and carbon allocation dynamics within the trees. Here, we present a single-substrate model for wood growth to interpret seasonal isotopic signals collected in an even-aged maritime pine plantation growing in South-west France, where climate, soil and flux variables were also monitored. Observed seasonal patterns in δ 13Ccellulose and δ 18Ocellulose were different between years and individuals, and mostly captured by the model, suggesting that the single-substrate hypothesis is a good approximation for tree ring studies on Pinus pinaster , at least for the environmental conditions covered by this study. A sensitivity analysis revealed that the model was mostly affected by five isotopic discrimination factors and two leaf gas-exchange parameters. Modelled early wood signals were also very sensitive to the date when cell wall thickening begins ( t wt). Our model could therefore be used to reconstruct t wt time series and improve our understanding of how climate influences this key parameter of xylogenesis.

Dendrochronology generally assumes that climate–growth relationships are age independent once the biological growth trend has been removed. However, tree physiology, namely, photosynthetic capacity and hydraulic conductivity changes with age. We tested whether the radial-growth response to climate and the intra-annual density fluctuations (IADFs) of Pinus pinaster Ait. varied with age. Trees were sampled in Pinhal de Leiria (Portugal), and were divided in two age classes: young (<65 years old) and old (>115 years old). Earlywood and tree-ring width of young P. pinaster trees were more sensitive to climate influence while the response of latewood width to climate was stronger in old trees. Young trees start the growing season earlier, thus a time window delay occurs between young and old trees during which wood cells of young trees integrate environmental signals. Young trees usually have a longer growing season and respond faster to climate conditions, thus young P. pinaster trees presented a higher frequency of IADFs compared with old trees. Most of the IADFs were located in latewood and were positively correlated to autumn precipitation. The radial-growth response of P. pinaster to climate and the IADFs frequency were age dependent. The use of trees with different age to create a tree-ring chronology for climate studies can increase the resolution of climatic signals. Age-dependent responses to climate can also give important clues to predict how young and old trees react to climate change.

Climate change is expected to result in more extreme weather conditions over large parts of Europe, such as the prolonged drought of 2003. As water supply is critical for tree growth on many sites in North-Western Europe, such droughts will affect growth, species competition, and forest dynamics. To be able to assess the susceptibility of tree species to climate change, it is necessary to understand growth responses to climate, at a high temporal resolution. We therefore studied the intra-annual growth dynamics of three beech trees (Fagus sylvatica L.) and five oak trees (Quercus robur L.) growing on a sandy site in the east of the Netherlands for 2 years: 2003 (oak and beech) and 2004 (oak). Microcores were taken at 2-week intervals from the end of April until the end of October. Intra-annual tree-ring formation was compared with prior and contemporary records of precipitation and temperature from a nearby weather station. The results indicate that oak and beech reacted differently to the summer drought in 2003. During the drought, wood formation in both species ceased, but in beech, it recovered after the drought. The causes of species-specific differences in intra-annual wood formation are discussed in the context of susceptibility to drought.

Tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies have been widely and long-time used to reconstruct past climate variations in the Andes in South America. The use of tree-ring isotopic chronologies is still not widespread in this region although they have proved to be very efficient climate proxies. Araucaria araucana (Molina) K. Koch is a conifer tree species with some multi-century-old individuals that offers an excellent opportunity to measure stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopes in cellulose from long tree-ring records. Here, we explore whether current or stored carbohydrates are used for A. araucana radial growth and we assess the potential of a tree-ring isotopic record of to study past climate variability. Eleven A. araucana cores from a dry and high-elevation forest at the northern border of Patagonia, Argentina (38°55’S, 70°44’W) were selected for stable isotopes analyses. The strong correlation between the isotopic composition of the first and second parts of the same ring, but also the strong relationships between δ13C and δ18O records with climate parameters of the current growing season such as temperature, show that tree-rings are built mostly with carbohydrates produced during the current growing season with little or no supply from storage or reserves. This finding leads to reconsidering the interpretation of the legacy effect (i.e. ecological memory effects) based on the previously described strong negative correlation between A. araucana TRW chronologies and previous growing season temperature and suggests a dependence of radial tree growth on the level of development of organs. Regarding climate sensitivity, the A. araucana tree-ring δ13C chronology is strongly related to current summer temperature (r = 0.82, p < 0.001), vapour pressure deficit (VPD; r = 0.79, p < 0.001), precipitation (r = −0.53, p < 0.001) and SPEI2 (r = −0.73, p < 0.001). These strong relationships support the use of δ13C of A. araucana tree-ring cellulose to reconstruct past temperature variations at regional scale in relation with large-atmospheric drivers of climate variability such as the Southern Annular Mode. The A. araucana tree-ring δ18O chronology is also correlated with temperature (r = 0.42, p < 0.01) and VPD (r = 0.45, p < 0.01) of the winter preceding the growing season. This suggests that trees are using water from precipitation infiltrated in the soil during the previous recharge period (autumn-winter). The weak correlations of δ18O with current summer atmospheric conditions and the decoupling between δ18O and δ13C, may be due to a high rate of oxygen exchange between sugars and xylem water (Pex) during cellulose synthesis, which dampens evaporative isotopic fractionation.

Inter-ring variations in stable-carbon isotope composition of cellulose in Daniella oliveri, Isoberlinia doka, and Tamarindus indica stumps were analyzed for nine trees in the Soudan-Sahel zone of West Africa. This pioneer isotopic study is a contribution to on-going efforts to evaluate the feasibility of extracting proxy climatic records from tree-rings in this area. Our aim is to investigate trends in individual floating δ13C time series to assess if patterns in variability within and between rings are consistent with those in other climatically sensitive tree-ring δ13C series. Samples were collected primarily from tree stumps but kill dates were unknown. Tree age was estimated from stump condition and shoot regrowth. This approach, combined with low sample replication, hindered the establishment of absolute dates. Nevertheless, δ13C and discrimination (Δ13C), absolute values and variability in the time series are similar to those often seen in tree-rings. Average δ13C values for individual series range from −25.90‰ to −23.72‰ and average Δ13C values from 16.56‰ to 18.99‰. It is well known that seasonal rainfall is inversely related to the δ13C in growth-season-dry environments and positively covaries with Δ. We investigate the possibility of using this relationship to temporally anchor the time series and to identify missing and false rings in wood segments with indistinct growth. The variability in these time series is consistent with expected patterns and shows promise for facilitating the development of stable carbon isotope tree-ring chronologies for West Africa.

The analysis of δ 13C and δ 18O in tree-ring archives offers retrospective insights into environmental conditions and ecophysiological processes. While photosynthetic carbon isotope discrimination and evaporative oxygen isotope enrichment are well understood, we lack information on how the isotope signal is altered by downstream metabolic processes.
In Pinus sylvestris , we traced the isotopic signals from their origin in the leaf water ( δ 18O) or the newly assimilated carbon ( δ 13C), via phloem sugars to the tree-ring, over a time-scale that ranges from hours to a growing season.
Seasonally, variable 13C enrichment of sugars related to phloem loading and transport did lead to uncoupling between δ 13C in the tree-ring, and the c i/ c a ratio at the leaf level. In contrast, the oxygen isotope signal was transferred from the leaf water to the tree-ring with an expected enrichment of 27‰, with time-lags of approximately 2 weeks and with a 40% exchange between organic oxygen and xylem water oxygen during cellulose synthesis.
This integrated overview of the fate of carbon and oxygen isotope signals within the model tree species P. sylvestris provides a novel physiological basis for the interpretation of δ 13C and δ 18O in tree-ring ecology.

Populus nigra is considered a rare and threatened tree species in Switzerland because of dramatic habitat loss owing to river regulations during the last two centuries and because of potential gene introgression from non-indigenous P. deltoides through planted P. x canadensis hybrids. The significance of introgression as an endangerment to P. nigra, however, is controversial. The aims of the present study were (1) to assess how abundant P. nigra trees are in Switzerland and (2) to assess potential gene introgression. We present data from a molecular survey of 1372 putative P. nigra trees from Switzerland, using both chloroplast DNA and nuclear DNA markers. The results show that P. nigra is more abundant in Switzerland than hitherto thought. Furthermore, we detected a low frequency of gene introgression.
