Risk analysis is considered as an important process to identify the known and potential vulnerabilities and threats in the
web services security. It is quite difficult for users to collect adequate events to estimate the full vulnerabilities and
probability of threats in the Web, due to the rapid change of the malicious attacks and the new computer’s vulnerabilities.
In this paper, a fuzzy risk assessment model is developed in order to evaluate the risk of web services in a situation where
complete information is not available. The proposed model extends Pseudo-Order Preference Model (POPM) to estimate the imprecise
risk based on richness of information and to determine their ranking using a weighted additive rule. A case study of a number
of web services is presented in order to test the proposed approach.

Efficient and robust data streaming services are a critical requirement of emerging Grid applications, which are based on
seamless interactions and coupling between geographically distributed application components. Furthermore the dynamism of
Grid environments and applications requires that these services be able to continually manage and optimize their operation
based on system state and application requirements. This paper presents a design and implementation of such a self-managing
data-streaming service based on online control strategies. A Grid-based fusion workflow scenario is used to evaluate the service
and demonstrate its feasibility and performance.

Sub-Antarctic Marion Island has had a permanent research station for 50 years and the islands Wandering Albatrosses have been intensively studied for 20 years. The reactions of breeding birds to approaches by a human on foot were recorded. Three response variables were calculated: intensity of vocal reaction (IVR), intensity of non-vocal reaction (INR) and overall response index (ORI). At 5 m from the nest, twice as many birds stood and/or vocalised as at 15 m. Nearest neighbour distance, age and gender did not explain individual variability of responses. Study colony birds had higher IVR scores than non-study colony birds; birds at colonies closest to the station had the highest ORI scores. A better breeding record was associated with lower IVR and ORI scores, but a causative relationship remains to be demonstrated. A minimum viewing distance of 25 m is recommended for breeding Wandering Albatrosses.

We present a decentralized algorithm for online clustering analysis used for anomaly detection in self-monitoring distributed
systems. In particular, we demonstrate the monitoring of a network of printing devices that can perform the analysis without
the use of external computing resources (i.e. in-network analysis). We also show how to ensure the robustness of the algorithm,
in terms of anomaly detection accuracy, in the face of failures of the network infrastructure on which the algorithm runs.
Further, we evaluate the tradeoff in terms of overhead necessary for ensuring this robustness and present a method to reduce
this overhead while maintaining the detection accuracy of the algorithm.

We present a technique that controls the peak power consumption of a high-density server by implementing a feedback controller
that uses precise, system-level power measurement to periodically select the highest performance state while keeping the system
within a fixed power constraint. A control theoretic methodology is applied to systematically design this control loop with
analytic assurances of system stability and controller performance, despite unpredictable workloads and running environments.
In a real server we are able to control power over a 1 second period to within 1 W and over an 8 second period to within 0.1 W.
Conventional servers respond to power supply constraint situations by using simple open-loop policies to set a safe performance
level in order to limit peak power consumption. We show that closed-loop control can provide higher performance under these
conditions and implement this technique on an IBM BladeCenter HS20 server. Experimental results demonstrate that closed-loop
control provides up to 82% higher application performance compared to open-loop control and up to 17% higher performance compared
to a widely used ad-hoc technique.

A key point in the analysis of dynamical models of biological systems is to handle systems of relatively high dimensions.
In the present paper we propose a method to hierarchically organize a certain type of piecewise affine (PWA) differential
systems. This specific class of systems has been extensively studied for the past few years, as it provides a good framework
to model gene regulatory networks. The method, shown on several examples, allows a qualitative analysis of the asymptotic
behavior of a PWA system, decomposing it into several smaller subsystems. This technique, based on the well-known strongly
connected components decomposition, is not new. However, its adaptation to the non-smooth PWA differential equations turns
out to be quite relevant because of the strong discrete structure underlying these equations. Its biological relevance is
shown on a 7-dimensional PWA system modeling the gene network responsible for the carbon starvation response in Escherichia coli.

Mobile location technologies have drawn much attention to cope with the mass demands of wireless communication services. Although
clustering spatial data is viewed as an effective way to access the objects located in a physical space, little has been done
in estimating mobile location. In wireless communication, one of the main problems with accurate location is nonline of sight
(NLoS) propagation. To solve the problem, we present a new location algorithm with clustering technique by utilizing the geometrical
feature of cell layout, time of arrival range measurements, and three base stations. The mobile location is estimated by solving
the optimal solution of the objective function based on the high density cluster. Furthermore, our proposed algorithm only
needs three range measurements and does not distinguish between NLoS and LoS environments. Simulations study was conducted
to evaluate the performance of the algorithm for different NLoS error distributions and various upper bound of NLoS error.
The results of our experiments demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is significantly more effective in location accuracy
than range scaling algorithm, linear lines of position algorithm, and Taylor series algorithm, and also satisfies the location
accuracy demand of E-911.

Biological technologies are becoming an important part of the economy. Biotechnology already contributes at least 1% of US
GDP, with revenues growing as much as 20% annually. The introduction of composable biological parts will enable an engineering
discipline similar to the ones that resulted in modern aviation and information technology. As the sophistication of biological
engineering increases, it will provide new goods and services at lower costs and higher efficiencies. Broad access to foundational
engineering technologies is seen by some as a threat to physical and economic security. However, regulation of access will
serve to suppress the innovation required to produce new vaccines and other countermeasures as well as limiting general economic
growth.

Several open ended issues for high resource availability in mobile peer to peer networks have been examined in the recent
past. Different approaches were conducted for supporting information distribution and availability, through guided or unguided
packet diffusion. The majority of the recently proposed approaches try to benefit from the spatial characteristics of the
dynamically varying topologies. In this work a directed information diffusion scheme is examined using a level and schema-based
coordination, applied in mobile peer to peer networks. The prioritization degree of any requested advert is modeled and enables
directed prioritized diffusions to end mobile users that are traversing a certain geographic region (location based advertisements).
The proposed method is robust in disseminating redundant messages to users while maintaining connectivity through Gradual
Energy Tree-based (GET) configuration. Simulation is performed for the examination and performance evaluation of the proposed
scheme, taking into account the modeled prioritization as well as the diffusion accuracy by using the Hierarchical and Non-hierarchical
GET configuration.

Soil conservation is widely regarded a critical component of sustainable livelihood strategies for the hillsides of Honduras. However, neoliberal polices have reduced economic incentives for agricultural intensification. Recent studies indicate off-farm work opportunities address poverty in a way conservation and development efforts do not. Yet off-farm work may discourage poor farmers from practicing soil conservation. A middle ground is needed. This study indicates micro-credit can substitute for off-farm work and encourage soil conservation practice. Many regions throughout Honduras have had extensive contact with soil conservation programs and would benefit more from credit services than redundant technological extension.

The analysis of data usage in a large set of real traces from a high-energy physics collaboration revealed the existence of
an emergent grouping of files that we coined “filecules”. This paper presents the benefits of using this file grouping for
prestaging data and compares it with previously proposed file grouping techniques along a range of performance metrics. Our
experiments with real workloads demonstrate that filecule grouping is a reliable and useful abstraction for data management
in science Grids; that preserving time locality for data prestaging is highly recommended; that job reordering with respect
to data availability has significant impact on throughput; and finally, that a relatively short history of traces is a good
predictor for filecule grouping. Our experimental results provide lessons for workload modeling and suggest design guidelines
for data management in data-intensive resource-sharing environments.

I show that gene regulation networks are qualitatively consistent and therefore sufficiently similar to linearly seperable
connectionist networks to warrant that the connectionist framework be applied to gene regulation. On this view, natural selection
designs gene regulation networks to overcome the difficulty of development. I offer some general lessons about their evolvability
that can be learned by examining the generic features of connectionist networks.
