This Commentary describes a call for submissions for the upcoming Special Issue focused on the science presented at the 20th IUPAB Congress to be held in conjunction with the 45th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 20th International IUPAB Congress will take place as a virtual meeting this year from October 4 to 8, 2021. This triennial IUPAB Congress will be held in loose conjunction with the 45th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. To act as a complement to this virtual meeting, the Biophysical Reviews journal will base a Special Issue on the scientific topics of the meeting contributors selected from the range of invited speakers and poster presenters. This Special Issue will also work to highlight the host country’s (Brazil) National Biophysical Society. Finally, this Special Issue will also serve to publish the meeting abstracts in supplemental form.Review articles from IUPAB Congress speakers and poster presenters to the IUPAB Congress and associated conferences (the 45th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Biophysical Society and the 49th Annual Meeting of the Brazilian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) are solicited. Similar to the SI based on the 19th IUPAB Congress held in Edinburgh summarizing Commentaries from session chairs are also requested (Hall and dos Remedios 2017). The Special Issue for the 20th IUPAB International Congress will be prepared and edited by the current authors (Rosangela Itri, Mauricio Baptista, Richard Garratt, and Antonio Jose Costa-Filho).  相似文献

Background

There is a proposed link between dietary zinc intake and atherosclerosis, but this relationship remains unclear. Phytate may contribute to this relationship by influencing zinc bioavailability.

Objective

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between zinc bioavailability and subclinical atherosclerosis in healthy Korean adults.

Materials and Methods

The present cross-sectional analysis used baseline data from the Korean multi-Rural Communities Cohort Study (MRCohort), which is a part of The Korean Genome Epidemiology Study (KoGES). A total of 5,532 subjects (2,116 men and 3,416 women) aged 40 years and older were recruited from rural communities in South Korea between 2005 and 2010. Phytate:zinc molar ratio, estimated from a food-based food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) of 106 food items, was used to determine zinc bioavailability, and carotid intima media thickness (cIMT) and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were measured to calculate the subclinical atherosclerotic index.

Results

We found that phytate:zinc molar ratio is positively related to cIMT in men. A higher phytate:zinc molar ratio was significantly related to an increased risk of atherosclerosis in men, defined as the 80th percentile value of cIMT (5th vs. 1st quintile, OR = 2.11, 95% CI 1.42-3.15, P for trend = 0.0009), and especially in elderly men (5th vs. 1st quintile, OR = 2.58, 95% CI 1.52-4.37, P for trend = 0.0021). We found a positive relationship between phytate:zinc molar ratio and atherosclerosis risk among women aged 65 years or younger. Phytate:zinc molar ratio was not found to be related to PWV.

Conclusions

Lower zinc bioavailability may be related to higher atherosclerosis risk.  相似文献

The historical town of Weimar in Thuringia, the "green heart of Germany" was the sphere of Goethe and Schiller, the two most famous representatives of German literature's classic era. Not yet entirely as influential as those two cultural icons, the Signal Transduction Society (STS) has nevertheless in the last decade established within the walls of Weimar an annual interdisciplinary Meeting on "Signal Transduction – Receptors, Mediators and Genes", which is well recognized as a most attractive opportunity to exchange results and ideas in the field.The 12th STS Meeting was held from October 28 to 31 and provided a state-of-the-art overview of various areas of signal transduction research in which progress is fast and discussion lively. This report is intended to share with the readers of CCS some highlights of the Meeting Workshops devoted to specific aspects of signal transduction.  相似文献

The developmental interaction between the egg/larval parasitoid,Ascogaster reticulatus Watanabe (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and its host,Adoxophyes sp. (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) was examined. Prior to the egress of a final-instar parasitoid larva from the 4th-instar host larva, host weight decreased by 22% from the maximum weight. The final body weight of a host larva was 27% of the maximum weight of a healthy 5th-instar host. Food consumption was significantly reduced in both 3rd-and 4th-instar parasitized larvae compared with healthy ones. In the 4th instar, a parasitized larva consumed 28% less artificial diet and produced less frass than a healthy larva. The growth rate of the endoparasitoid larvae greatly increased after their host's molt to the 4th instar. Parasitoid larval volume increased 40 fold in the 4th-instar host.   相似文献

Objectives

To describe changes over time in extent of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) at multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) assessed by semi-quantitative visual scores (VSs) and fully automatic histogram-based quantitative evaluation and to test the relationship between these two methods of quantification.

Methods

Forty IPF patients (median age: 70 y, interquartile: 62-75 years; M:F, 33:7) that underwent 2 MDCT at different time points with a median interval of 13 months (interquartile: 10-17 months) were retrospectively evaluated. In-house software YACTA quantified automatically lung density histogram (10th-90th percentile in 5th percentile steps). Longitudinal changes in VSs and in the percentiles of attenuation histogram were obtained in 20 untreated patients and 20 patients treated with pirfenidone. Pearson correlation analysis was used to test the relationship between VSs and selected percentiles.

Results

In follow-up MDCT, visual overall extent of parenchymal abnormalities (OE) increased in median by 5 %/year (interquartile: 0 %/y; +11 %/y). Substantial difference was found between treated and untreated patients in HU changes of the 40th and of the 80th percentiles of density histogram. Correlation analysis between VSs and selected percentiles showed higher correlation between the changes (Δ) in OE and Δ 40th percentile (r=0.69; p<0.001) as compared to Δ 80th percentile (r=0.58; p<0.001); closer correlation was found between Δ ground-glass extent and Δ 40th percentile (r=0.66, p<0.001) as compared to Δ 80th percentile (r=0.47, p=0.002), while the Δ reticulations correlated better with the Δ 80th percentile (r=0.56, p<0.001) in comparison to Δ 40th percentile (r=0.43, p=0.003).

Conclusions

There is a relevant and fully automatically measurable difference at MDCT in VSs and in histogram analysis at one year follow-up of IPF patients, whether treated or untreated: Δ 40th percentile might reflect the change in overall extent of lung abnormalities, notably of ground-glass pattern; furthermore Δ 80th percentile might reveal the course of reticular opacities.  相似文献

Background

Effective surveillance for infectious diseases is an essential component of public health. There are few studies estimating the cost-effectiveness of starting or improving disease surveillance. We present a cost-effectiveness analysis the Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR) strategy in Africa.

Methodology/Principal Findings

To assess the impact of the IDSR in Africa, we used pre- and post- IDSR meningococcal meningitis surveillance data from Burkina Faso (1996–2002 and 2003–2007). IDSR implementation was correlated with a median reduction of 2 weeks to peak of outbreaks (25th percentile 1 week; 75th percentile 4 weeks). IDSR was also correlated with a reduction of 43 meningitis cases per 100,000 (25th–40: 75th-129). Assuming the correlations between reductions in time to peak of outbreaks and cases are related, the cost-effectiveness of IDSR was $23 per case averted (25th-$30; 75th - cost saving), and $98 per meningitis-related death averted (25th-$140: 75th – cost saving).

Conclusions/Significance

We cannot absolutely claim that the measured differences were due to IDSR. We believe, however, that it is reasonable to claim that IDSR can improve the cost-effectiveness of public health surveillance.  相似文献

Plasmalemma-enriched fractions were isolated from Jerusalem artichoke tubers along the time course of dormancy break produced by cold treatment. A decrease of membrane fluidity was noted from the 3rd to the 8th week of this treatment, as well as a decrease of plasmalemma NADH dehydrogenase activity from the 5th to the 8th week. The plasmalemma lipid extracts studied revealed two major phospholipidic components: phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). Their respective quantities decreased until the 12th week, where the phosphatidylcholine level is lower than the phosphatidylethanolamine one. The observed changes are discused in relation to dormant and non-dormant states of tubers and the breaking of dormancy.  相似文献

Objectives:To investigate the effects of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) compound with fibrin on osteoporotic vertebral fracture healing in rats.Methods:For the present study 160 Specific-Pathogen Free 32-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were used. 120 rats were randomly divided in three groups (experimental, model and sham operation group- n=40 per group) and were ovariectomized to establish the osteoporosis model. 40 rats served as a control group without treatment. The expression of BMP-2 in the fracture zone at the 4th, 6th, 8th, and 12th weeks was detected by qRT-PCR. The expression of BALP and CTX-I in serum at the 12th week was detected by Elisa.Results:At week 8, the morphology of the sham operation group was the same and the fracture healing occurred more slowly than in the other groups. At week 12, the expression of BMP-2 in the model group was significantly higher than that in the other three groups (p<0.05). At week 12, the maximum load, maximum strain, and elastic modulus of model group were significantly lower than those of the other three groups.Conclusions:BMP-2 compound with fibrin can enhance the timing and quality of bone fracture healing in rats.  相似文献

Transfer RNA (tRNA) structure, modifications and functions are evolutionary and established in bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes. Typically the tRNA modifications are indispensable for its stability and are required for decoding the mRNA into amino acids for protein synthesis. A conserved methylation has been located on the anticodon loop specifically at the 37th position and it is next to the anticodon bases. This modification is called as m1G37 and it is catalyzed by tRNA (m1G37) methyltransferase (TrmD). It is deciphered that G37 positions occur on few additional amino acids specific tRNA subsets in bacteria. Furthermore, Archaea and Eukaryotes have more number of tRNA subsets which contains G37 position next to the anticodon and the G residue are located at different positions such as G36, G37, G38, 39, and G40. In eight bacterial species, G (guanosine) residues are presents at the 37th and 38th position except three tRNA subsets having G residues at 36th and 39th positions. Therefore we propose that m1G37 modification may be feasible at 36th, 37th, 38th, 39th and 40th positions next to the anticodon of tRNAs. Collectively, methylation at G residues close to the anticodon may be possible at different positions and without restriction of anticodon 3rd base A, C, U or G.  相似文献

Developmental changes of plant in the regulation of photosynthate distribution of leaves were studied in hydroponically cultivated rice by the 14CO2 tracer technique and analysis of the activity of the regulatory enzymes, sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS), phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), and pyruvate kinase (PK). The distribution of primary photosynthates into sugars, amino acids, organic acids, sugar phosphates, proteins, and polysaccharides was determined by column chromatography. The relative primary photosynthate distribution to the sugar phosphate fraction was significantly larger in the 5th leaf than in the 6th one. Correspondingly, the Vmax of PEPC was significantly higher in the 5th than in the 6th leaf, while no significant differences between leaves were detected in the other enzymes. As a consequence, the ratio of the Vmax of SPS and PEPC was lower in the 5th than in the 6th leaf. As the 5th leaf develops before panicle initiation in rice, it predominantly supports vegetative growth, while the 6th leaf develops after panicle initiation and thus contributes mainly to reproductive growth. We conclude that the physiological properties of each leaf are regulated developmentally. When the 6th leaf became fully expanded (corresponding to the panicle initiation stage of plant), the distribution pattern of 14C was transiently changed in the 5th leaf, indicating that individual organs that are mainly involved in vegetative development are affected to some extent by the whole-plant-level physiological transformation that occurs at the transition from the vegetative to the reproductive stage.  相似文献

Although a few hundred single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) suffice to infer close familial relationships, high density genome-wide SNP data make possible the inference of more distant relationships such as 2nd to 9th cousinships. In order to characterize the relationship between genetic similarity and degree of kinship given a timeframe of 100–300 years, we analyzed the sharing of DNA inferred to be identical by descent (IBD) in a subset of individuals from the 23andMe customer database (n = 22,757) and from the Human Genome Diversity Panel (HGDP-CEPH, n = 952). With data from 121 populations, we show that the average amount of DNA shared IBD in most ethnolinguistically-defined populations, for example Native American groups, Finns and Ashkenazi Jews, differs from continentally-defined populations by several orders of magnitude. Via extensive pedigree-based simulations, we determined bounds for predicted degrees of relationship given the amount of genomic IBD sharing in both endogamous and ‘unrelated’ population samples. Using these bounds as a guide, we detected tens of thousands of 2nd to 9th degree cousin pairs within a heterogenous set of 5,000 Europeans. The ubiquity of distant relatives, detected via IBD segments, in both ethnolinguistic populations and in large ‘unrelated’ populations samples has important implications for genetic genealogy, forensics and genotype/phenotype mapping studies.  相似文献

The purpose of our work was to observe the influence of probiotic preparation BioPlus 2B on average daily gains of weaned pigs, feed efficiency and to evaluate some metabolic indices. The weaned pigs, at the age of 42 days, were included into the trial and divided into four groups. Pigs in groups A (n = 5) and B (n = 4) received BioPlus 2B also before weaning. Only group A received BioPlus 2B, at the concentration of 3.2 × 109 CFU per kg of feed, after weaning continually. Groups C (n = 5) and D (n = 4) did not receive BioPlus 2B until the start of the trial, but group C was given BioPlus 2B at the same concentration as group A during the experiment. Blood samples for determination of metabolic indices were collected at the start of experiment, i.e. on 42nd day of pigs life, and then on 56th, 70th, 84th and 91st days of pigs life. The following biochemical indices were evaluated within the trial: serum levels of total proteins, albumin, urea, total cholesterol and total lipids. Total serum protein level (p < 0.0001) and serum albumin level (p = 0.0024) in groups A and B were significantly higher in comparison with groups C and D on day 56 of pigs life. Serum urea level in group D was significantly (p = 0.049) higher than in group A on 70th day of pigs life. Serum level of total cholesterol in group B on day 56 and 84 of pigs life was significantly (p = 0.0004) higher than in groups C and D. Total serum lipid level was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in B group compared to other groups on 56th, 70th, 84th days of pigs life. Average daily gains (ADG) in A group, even if non-significantly, were about 10% better than in groups B, C, D between 57th and 77th days of pigs life. ADG in groups A and B were 14% better in comparison with that in groups C and D between 78th and 91st days of pigs life (p = 0.036). The best feed efficiency in the trial was in group A, approximately 13%, 16% and 21% better than that in the groups B, C and D, repectively. We investigated effects of vitamin C and E (VCE) administration on desflurane-induced oxidative toxicity and element changes in the blood of operative patients under desflurane general anesthesia. Forty American Society of Anesthesiologists I or II Physical Status adult patients were scheduled for elective surgery. The patients were randomly divided into two groups. Control and VCE group was introduced to anesthesia with desflurane. VCE was administreted to patients in the control and VCE group before 1 hour of anesthesia with desflurane. Baseline (preoperative) and postoperative (at the 1st, the 24th, and 72th h), blood samples were taken from the first and second groups. Erythrocyte and plasma lipid peroxidation levels at the 1st, 24th, and 72th hours were higher in the control than in baseline group, although their levels at the same periods were lower in the VCE group than in the control. Vitamin E levels at the postoperative 1st and 24th hours and erythrocyte glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity at the postoperative 1st, 24th, and 72th hours was lower than in baseline values. Erythrocyte GSH-Px activity and plasma vitamins A, C, and E levels at the postoperative 1st, 24th, and 72th hours were higher in the VCE group than in the control group. Erythrocyte and plasma reduced glutathione, plasma β-carotene, and serum copper, while zinc, selenium, aluminum, iron, magnesium, and calcium levels did not differ between preoperative and postoperative periods in both groups. In conclusion, VCE combination prevented the desflurane-induced vitamin E and GSH-Px consumptions to strengthen the antioxidant levels in the blood of operative patients.  相似文献

Background

Quantile regression, a robust semi-parametric approach, was used to examine the impact of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) across birthweight quantiles with a focus on maternal prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) and gestational weight gain (GWG).

Methods

Using linked birth certificate, inpatient hospital and prenatal claims data we examined live singleton births to non-Hispanic white (NHW, 135,119) and non-Hispanic black (NHB, 76,675) women in South Carolina who delivered 28–44 weeks gestation in 2004–2008.

Results

At a maternal BMI of 30 kg/m2 at the 90th quantile of birthweight, exposure to GDM was associated with birthweights 84 grams (95% CI 57, 112) higher in NHW and 132 grams (95% CI: 104, 161) higher in NHB. Results at the 50th quantile were 34 grams (95% CI: 17, 51) and 78 grams (95% CI: 56, 100), respectively. At a maternal GWG of 13.5 kg at the 90th quantile of birthweight, exposure to GDM was associated with birthweights 83 grams (95% CI: 57, 109) higher in NHW and 135 grams (95% CI: 103, 167) higher in NHB. Results at the 50th quantile were 55 grams (95% CI: 40, 71) and 69 grams (95% CI: 46, 92), respectively.

Summary

Our findings indicate that GDM, maternal prepregnancy BMI and GWG increase birthweight more in NHW and NHB infants who are already at the greatest risk of macrosomia or being large for gestational age (LGA), that is those at the 90th rather than the median of the birthweight distribution.  相似文献

The Khmer kingdom, whose capital was at Angkor from the 9th to the 14th-15th century, was founded in 802 by king Jayavarman II in a city called Mahandraparvata, on Phnom Kulen. Virtually nothing more is known of Mahandraparvata from the epigraphic sources, but systematic archaeological survey and excavation have identified an array of cultural features that point to a more extensive and enduring settlement than the historical record indicates. Recent remote sensing data have revolutionized our view, revealing the remains of a city with a complex and spatially extensive network of urban infrastructure. Here, we present a record of vegetation change and soil erosion from within that urban network, dating from the 8th century CE. Our findings indicate approximately 400 years of intensive land use, punctuated by discrete periods of intense erosion beginning in the mid 9th century and ending in the late 11th century. A marked change in water management practices is apparent from the 12th century CE, with implications for water supply to Angkor itself. This is the first indication that settlement on Mahendraparvata was not only extensive, but also intensive and enduring, with a marked environmental impact.  相似文献
