Avian diet quality is typically measured using true metabolizable energy (TMEN), which is a measure of assimilable energy of food items accounting for innate endogenous losses. Originally developed for use in the poultry industry, TMEN methods have been adapted to determine the value of natural foods consumed by waterfowl to parameterize bioenergetics models for conservation planning. Because there is little knowledge of the variation in TMEN estimates among food items and waterfowl species, we investigated TMEN of 6 common species of submersed aquatic vegetation for mallards (Anas platyrhynchos; i.e., a diet generalist) and gadwall (Mareca strepera; i.e., a diet specialist) in the midwestern United States during autumn 2015–2017. We precision fed and collected excreta from ducks using standard bioassays to estimate TMEN. Mallards had slightly greater TMEN than gadwall, but there was considerable variation in TMEN among vegetation species, duck species, and individuals within each species. True metabolizable energy (±SE; kcal/g[dry]) for mallards was greatest for Canadian waterweed (Elodea canadensis; 1.66 ± 0.26), followed by coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum; 1.51 ± 0.28), southern naiad (Najas guadalupensis; 1.37 ± 0.39), sago pondweed (Stuckenia pectinata; 0.50 ± 0.22), wild celery (Vallisneria americana; 0.05 ± 0.42), and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum; –0.13 ± 0.42). Mean TMEN for gadwall was greatest for Eurasian watermilfoil (0.77 ± 0.32), followed by Canadian waterweed (0.70 ± 0.31), coontail (0.55 ± 0.28), southern naiad (–0.61 ± 0.34), wild celery (–0.98 ± 0.39), and sago pondweed (–1.07 ± 0.33). Generally, TMEN for most vegetation species was less than agricultural grains, but it was similar to ranges reported for seeds of naturally occurring hydrophytic vegetation and aquatic macroinvertebrates. We recommend that conservation planners incorporate species-specific TMEN estimates in bioenergetics models and that future researchers improve TMEN assays for wild waterfowl following our recommendations. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Waterfowl migrating and overwintering in the Atlantic Flyway depend on adequate availability of wetland plant communities to survive winter and fuel reproduction in the subsequent breeding season. Energetics models are the primary tool employed by conservation planners to estimate energetic carrying capacity based on energy supply and demand in different wetlands to assist with effective habitat conservation. Coastal impoundments have been used to provide a consistent, annual source of energy for migrating and wintering waterfowl. But few studies have attempted to comprehensively assess the relative value of managed coastal impoundments compared with unmanaged tidal salt marshes to wintering waterfowl in the Mid-Atlantic region with further consideration to the effect of sea level rise changing availability. We estimated biomass and energy of preferred foods for 5 dabbling duck species in 7 impoundments and 3 tidal salt marshes over winter by collecting soil core (n = 1,364), nekton (n = 426), and salt marsh snail (Melampus spp.; n = 87) samples in October, January, and April 2011–2013. Food-energy density was greater in freshwater impoundments for nearly all dabbling ducks (range = 183,344–562,089 kcal/ha), and typically greater in brackish impoundments (range = 169,665–357,160 kcal/ha) than most tidal salt marsh communities (range = 55,693–361,429 kcal/ha), whereas mudflat (range = 96,223–137,473 kcal/ha) and subtidal (range = 55,693–136,326 kcal/ha) communities typically contained the least energy. Extrapolating to the state level, we estimated 7.60 × 109–1.14 × 1010 kcal available within a 16-km buffer from the Delaware Bayshore, depending on species. Combining estimates for daily energy expenditure and food energy, we estimated 2.86 × 107–7.06 × 107 duck energy days currently available to dabbling ducks over winter. We estimated that in the next century, dabbling duck carrying capacities are likely to decrease under all but the most conservative sea level rise scenarios because of the gradual replacement of land-cover types that provide high energy density (i.e., low marsh, high marsh communities) with those that provide low energy density (i.e., subtidal, mudflat communities). Coastal impoundments in Delaware, USA, will provide increasingly important habitat for wintering dabbling ducks in the coming decades provided they are properly maintained and retain their current energetic density because they will contain a growing proportion of the available duck energy days on the landscape. Our research will assist managers in meeting target population goals for dabbling ducks in Delaware and the Mid-Atlantic region by highlighting key differences in the function and value of various wetlands. © 2021 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Para-rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) seed and its products were subjected to different methods of processing such as decortication, oil extraction, autoclaving and fermentation and assayed for their chemical composition and nutritional value. Peanut oil meal and yellow maize were also assayed similarly for comparison.

Decortication reduced the crude fibre content, with proportionate increases in other nutrients and energy value. Autoclaving and fermentation failed to improve the nutritional value of undecorticated rubber seed oil meal.

Crude protein content of rubber seed and its products ranged from 11.5% in rubber seeds to 27.4% in commercial decorticated rubber seed oil meal. The oil content of the rubber seeds and kernels was 24.0 and 40.1%, respectively. The available carbohydrate content of rubber seed and its products ranged from 6.3% in rubber seeds to 15.9% in commercial decorticated rubber seed oil meal; these values may be compared with the value of 59.0% for yellow maize.

Both undecorticated and decorticated rubber seed oil meals appeared to be deficient in sulphur-containing amino acids and lysine. The gross protein value of undecorticated and decorticated rubber seed oil meals and peanut oil meal was estimated to be 43.6, 47.0 and 49.7, respectively.

Both undecorticated and decorticated rubber seed oils were rich in oleic and stearic acids, but relatively poor in poly-unsaturated fatty acids, compared with peanut oil.

Determined apparent ME (AME) values were (kcal/g dry matter): rubber seeds, 2.91; kernels, 4.70; undecorticated rubber seed oil meal, 2.00; and decorticated rubber seed oil meal, 2.80. The true ME (TME) values were 3.24, 5.16, 2.22 and 3.00 kcal/g dry matter, respectively. In general, TME values were about 10% higher than the AME values.  相似文献

The standard Gibbs free energy change of hydrolysis of α-d-ribose 1-phosphate has been measured at pH 7.0, ionic strength 0.1 m, and 25 °C by combining the corresponding values of the two following reactions: adenosine + H2O ág adenine + ribose (ΔG0′ = ?2.3 ± 0.1 kcal/mol), catalyzed by adenosine nucleosidase, and ribose 1-phosphate + adenine ág adenosine + PiG0′ = ?3.1 ± 0.1 kcal/mol), catalyzed by adenosine phosphorylase. The standard Gibbs free energy changes were calculated for both reactions from the equilibrium constant. A value of -5.4 ± 0.15 kcal/mol, comparable to that of other hemiacetal phosphoric esters, was obtained for the hydrolysis of ribose 1-phosphate.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to determine the composition and the nutritional value of parental and transgenic maize seeds fed to pigs. The parental maize line was genetically modified to incorporate a gene from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) expressing a toxin against the European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis). Both (parental and transgenic) maize lines were analyzed for crude nutrients, starch, sugar, non-starch polysaccharides (NSP), amino acids, fatty acids, as well as for selected minerals. Furthermore, four complete diets were mixed and were analyzed for the same nutrients and some selected ingredients. The diets contained 70% maize to attain a high effect level. To evaluate the feeding value of one variety of genetically modified maize (transgenic) compared to the feeding value of the unmodified maize (parental) line, a balance study with twelve pigs was designed. Three collecting periods were used for each maize line each with six animals. The collected faeces were analyzed for crude nutrients. All measured parameters were virtually the same ( e.g. crude protein 11.59% vs. 11.06% in DM), especially the digestibility of crude protein (85.8 ± 2.3% vs. 86.1 ± 1.8%), the amount of nitrogen-free-extract (92.8 ± 0.6% vs. 93.2 ± 0.6%) and the metabolizable energy (15.7 ± 0.2% vs. 15.8 ± 0.2% MJ/kg DM) for both maize lines. Compared to the parental line, the chemical composition and digestibility of crude nutrients and energy content were not significantly affected by the genetic modification of maize. Therefore, from the view of a nutritional assessment, the genetically modified maize can be regarded as substantially equivalent to the parental maize line.  相似文献

Objective: As the prevalence of obesity has increased, so has sedentariness. Progressive sedentariness has been attributed to greater use of labor saving devices, such as washing machines, and less nonexercise walking (e.g., walking to work). However, there is a paucity of data to support this conclusion. In this study, we address the hypothesis that domestic mechanization of daily tasks has resulted in less energy expenditure compared with performing the same tasks manually. Research Methods and Procedures: Energy expenditure was measured in four groups of subjects (122 healthy adult men and women total) from Rochester, Minnesota. Energy expenditure was measured using indirect calorimetry while subjects performed structured tasks such as cleaning dishes and clothes, stair climbing, and work‐associated transportation, and these values were compared with the respective mechanized activity. Results: Energy expenditure was significantly greater and numerically substantial when daily domestic tasks were performed without the aid of machines or equipment (clothes washing: 45 ± 14 vs. 27 ± 9 kcal/d; dish washing: 80 ± 28 vs. 54 ± 19 kcal/d; transportation to work: 83 ± 17 vs. 25 ± 3 kcal/d; stair climbing: 11 ± 7 vs. 3 ± 1 kcal/d; p < 0.05). The combined impact of domestic mechanization was substantial and equaled 111 kcal/d. Discussion: The magnitude of the energetic impact of the mechanized tasks we studied was sufficiently great to contribute to the positive energy balance associated with weight gain. Efforts focused on reversing sedentariness have the potential to impact obesity.  相似文献

Abstract

The chemo-profiling of ethanolic extract of faba beans seeds was performed and explored as an α-glucosidase inhibitor. The inhibition of α-glucosidase is one of the alternatives approach to control postprandial hyperglycemia by, resulting in the delay of the carbohydrate digestion of absorbable monosaccharides. Ethanolic seed extract showed phenolic compounds, flavonoid such as gallic acid (m/z [M–?H]?=?169.0124,C7H6O5) ellagic acid derivatives epigallocatechin (m/z [M–?H?=?305.0644,C15H14O7),catechin (m/z [M–?H]?=?289.0656,C15H14O6), epigallocatechin gallate (m/z [M–?H]?=?457.0578,C22H18O11) and epicatechin monogallate (m/z [M–?H]?=?441.081, C22H18O10). The extract was found to exert inhibitory activity (88.28?±?2.67%) (IC50 value of 2.30?±?0.032?mg/mL) with a mixed mode of inhibition (Km, apparent = 0.54?±?0.020?mM and Vmax, apparent 0.136?±?0.04?mM/min). Molecular docking studies of gallic acid and catechin on α-glucosidase proposed productive binding modes having binding energy (?6.58?kcal/mol and ?7.25?kcal/mol) with an effective number of hydrogen bonds and binding energy. Tyr63, Arg197, Asp198, Glu 233, Asn324, Asp 326 of α-glucosidase participated in binding events with gallic acid and catechin. Molecular dynamics simulation studies were performed for both complexes i.e. gal:α-glucosidase and cat:α-glucosidase along with apo state of α-glucosidase, which revealed stable systems during the simulation. These findings of the present study may give an insight into the further development of the novel antidiabetic drug from the seeds of faba beans.  相似文献

The digestible (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) of full‐fat and defatted rubber seed meals (FRS and DRS) were determined with weanling albino rats fed diets in which the meals replaced either 20 or 40% glucose monohydrate in the reference diet. The nutritive value of both FRS and DRS included at 10, 20 and 30% of the diet as substitutes for groundnut meal and yellow maize was studied with 56, 28‐day‐old albino rats of the Wistar strain. The trial lasted 28 days. Nutrient digestion and nitrogen retention were studied at the end of the second week on test. The DE and ME for FRS were on average 24.7±1.30 and 21.7±0.80 hy/g dry matter and those for DRS were 15.3±0.97 and 13.8 ±0.46 hy/g dry matter.

Incorporation of rubber seed meals at increasing levels in the diet significantly depressed gains and worsened feed/gain ratio (P< 0.01), the diet containing 30% FRS or 20 and 30% DRS being significantly iferior to the control and the diet with 10% FRS or DRS. Significantly (P < 0.01) superior gains but not feed intake and efficiency were obtained for FRS compared to DRS.

Percent intake ‐N retained also decreased with increasing rubber seed levels in the diet. Except for the significantly (P < 0.05) higher crude fibre digestibility of the control diet compared with those containing 20 or 30% FRS or DRS, the digestibilities of other nutrients were not significantly different.  相似文献

Water‐holding soil amendments such as super‐absorbent polymer (SAP) may improve native species establishment in restoration but may also interact with precipitation or invasive species such as Bromus tectorum L. (cheatgrass or downy brome) to influence revegetation outcomes. We implemented an experiment at two sites in Colorado, U.S.A., in which we investigated the interactions of drought (66% reduction of ambient rainfall), B. tectorum seed addition (BRTE, 465 seeds/m2), and SAP soil amendment (25 g/m2) on initial plant establishment and 3‐year aboveground and belowground biomass and allocation. At one site, SAP resulted in higher native seeded species establishment but only with ambient precipitation. However, by the third year, we detected no SAP effects on native seeded species biomass. Treatments interacted to influence aboveground and belowground biomass and allocation differently. At one site, a SAP × precipitation interaction resulted in lower belowground biomass in plots with SAP and drought (61.7 ± 7.3 g/m2) than plots with drought alone (91.6 ± 18.1 g/m2). At the other site, a SAP × BRTE interaction resulted in higher belowground biomass in plots with SAP and BRTE (56.6 ± 11.2 g/m2) than BRTE alone (35.0 ± 3.7 g/m2). These patterns were not reflected in aboveground biomass. SAP should be used with caution in aridland restoration because initial positive effects may not translate to long‐term benefits, SAP may uniquely influence aboveground versus belowground biomass, and SAP can interact with environmental variables to impact developing plant communities in positive and negative ways.  相似文献

The spread of invasive alien plants into natural habitats is of growing global concern. Several studies have investigated the role that avian frugivores play in the dispersal of these seeds and their effects on germination success. Fruit bats have however received little attention as important dispersal agents of invasive alien plants, despite their recognized role as long distance dispersal agents of various native flora. We investigated whether Wahlberg’s epauletted fruit bats, Epomophorus wahlbergi, would positively influence the germination of seeds of invasive alien plants. These fruit bats were fed fruits of four invasive alien plant species—Psidium guajava, Melia azedarach, Eriobotrya japonica, and Morus alba. Epomophorus wahlbergi were able to process more fruit per gram body mass than birds have been observed to do. Spat and de-pulped control seeds had similar germination success and germinated at approximately the same time for most species. While seeds retained in whole fruit had significantly less germination success than spat seeds for all species, except M. azedarach, they mostly germinated at approximately the same time. Epomophorus wahlbergi can swallow small seeds (< 2 mm), while seeds larger than this are generally spat out. Large fruit are usually carried away to feeding roosts where seeds are dropped, thereby dispersing seeds and fruits which are too large for some bird species to ingest. Epomophorus wahlbergi should not be underestimated as dispersers of these invasive alien plants as they consume proportionally large amounts (0.62 ± 0.09 to 0.99 ± 0.11 g.g−1 body mass) of fruit, except for M. azedarach, and positively affect their seed germination rates.  相似文献

Some carnivorous mammals ingest fruit and disperse seeds of forest plant species capable of colonizing disturbed areas in ecosystems. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the dissemination of Arctostaphylos pungens and Juniperus deppeana seeds by the gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), coyote (Canis latrans), and other carnivores in the Protected Natural Area Sierra Fría, in Aguascalientes, Mexico. Scat collection was undertaken via transects using the direct search method, while the seasonal phenology of A. pungens and J. deppeana was evaluated by recording flower and fruit abundance on both the plant and the surrounding forest floor ground. Seed viability was assessed by optical densitometry via X‐ray and a germination test. It was found that the gray fox, coyote, ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), and bobcat (Lynx rufus) disseminated seeds of A. pungens (212 ± 48.9 seeds/scat) and J. deppeana (23.6 ± 4.9 seeds/scat), since a large proportion of the collected scat of these species contained seeds (28/30 = 93.33%, 12/43 = 27.9%, 6/12 = 50% and 7/25 = 28% respectively). The gray fox, coyote, ringtail, and bobcat presented an average of seed dispersion of both plant species of 185.4 ± 228.7, 4.0 ± 20.0, 12.1 ± 30.4, and 0.8 ± 1.5 per scat; the seed proportions in the gray fox, coyote, ringtail, and bobcat were 89.6/10.4%, 82.3/17.7%, 90.4/9.6%, and 38.1/61.9% for A. pungens and J. deppeana, respectively. The phenology indicated a finding related to the greater abundance of ripe fruit in autumn and winter (p < .01). This coincided with the greater abundance of seeds found in scats during these seasons. Endozoochory and diploendozoochory enhanced the viability and germination of the seeds (p > .05), except in those of A. pungens dispersed by coyote. These results suggest that carnivores, particularly the gray fox, the coyote, and the bobcat, play an important role in forest seed dissemination, and thus forest regeneration, by making both a quantitative and qualitative contribution to the dispersal of the two pioneer species under study.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to compare the physico‐chemical parameters of milt from sea trout (Salmo trutta m. trutta), brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Milt was collected by stripping and spermatozoa concentrations, were determined and compared with sperm motility and spermatocrit values along with seminal plasma indices (pH, osmolality, sodium, potassium, chlorine, calcium, magnesium, glucose and protein concentrations). The highest spermatozoa concentration of 22.3 ± 6.7 × 109 ml?1 was found in the sea trout milt, and was significantly different of those observed in brook trout (11.9 ± 3.3 × 109 ml?1) and rainbow trout (10.7 ± 4.4 × 109 ml?1). The values for pH and K+ did not differ significantly among species. The mean pH was 8.0 in the milt of each species and the K+ concentrations ranged from 24.8 ± 7.2 to 30.5 ± 7.6 mm L?1. Considerable differences were determined for the Ca2+ ions concentrations. The highest value was found in sea trout (1.7 ± 0.3 mm L?1), while in the rainbow trout it was 0.7 ± 0.5 and in the brook trout 0.4 ± 0.1 mm L?1. The most pronounced differences were found in the glucose concentration cause of its unnaturally low concentration in rainbow trout of the mean value of 6.0 ± 15.2 mg L?1. The mean value in sea trout and brook trout was 185.0 ± 172.4 and 231.2 ± 148.4 mg L?1 respectively. For all species, protein mean values were below 1.3 g L?1. The mean osmolality was between 230.6 ± 98.6 and 272.0 ± 26.4 mOsm kg?1 in the species studied. No correlation was found between any components determined in milt and the spermatozoa motility (P > 0.05). The sperm concentration was positively correlated with the protein content in the milt of the three species studied, other less exhibited correlation was found.  相似文献

Two experiments were carried out to assess the relationship between apparent digestible energy (ADE) values measured with pigs, and true metabolizable energy (TME) values measured with adult cockerels. In the second experiment both chromic oxide and acid insoluble ash were used as indicators in the pig.Pooled data revealed close relationships between ileal ADE (I) and TME (T): I = ?1.113 + 1.006T (r = 0.943; P<0.01); and between faecal ADE (F) and TME: F = 4.768 + 0.755T (r = 0.929; P<0.01); the data being expressed as MJ/kg of dry matter in the feed. The results suggest that TME values may be used to predict ADE values in the formulation of pig diets.  相似文献

A quantitative estimate of the activation energy for grain growth has been obtained by analyzing ice recrystallization experiments from water and from solutions with small amounts (< 1.0 μg/mL) of antifreeze glycoprotein (AFGP). Rates of grain growth are measured as changes of grain diameter in time, with the supercooled holding temperature aVid glycoprotein concentration as parameters. Arrhenius plots of these rates vs (1/T) yielded slopes proportional to the activation energies for the particular species. The values of activation energy are almost independent of solution concentration or the species of AFGP. Averaged activation energy value for the AFGP-4 species is Qg = (6.61 ± 1.02) × 105 J/mole. The “less active” AFGP-8 yielded an average Qg = (5.71 ± 2.39) × 105 J/mole, quite similar to the AFGP-4 species. The activation energy for recrystallization in a pure ice-water system was estimated from two temperature points, T = ?5.4 and ?7.5°C. The best value is 2.39 × 105 J/mole, nearly twice that obtained by M. N. Martino and N. E. Zaritsky [(1989) Cryobiology, Vol. 26, p. 138] in a recrystallization experiment using salt solution, but much smaller than the values derived from the AFGP solutions. Results further show that activation entropy is at least a factor of 2 larger for the AFGP species than that of pure ice-water system under the same growth conditions. These results suggest significant roles, both energetically and entropically, for AFGP molecules in their ability to inhibit grain growth of ice. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Summary Total lipids were extracted from 161 redpolls (Acanthis spp.) collected each month of the year from October 1962 to September 1963, in interior Alaska. A lipid index (Weight of ether extract x100/live body weight) was calculated for each sample. Lipids were also extracted from sections of pectoral muscle, livers and hearts representing each month.Body weight and lipid index were significantly positively correlated being highest in January and lowest in September. Total lipid content was significantly inversely correlated with air temperature; the high autumn and spring pre-migratory lipid peaks of migratory species were only weakly expressed in the redpolls. Liver lipid showed a significant annual variation being highest in December and lowest in August, while lipid from heart and pectoral muscle did not vary seasonally.Five birds were held in captivity during spring and summer at a constant temperature of 22°C. Food consumption was 5.1 g/day or 22.4 kcal. The caloric value of the most extensively utilized natural food, birch seed (Betula papyrifera), was determined (5.4–5.5 kcal/g dry wt). When esophageal diverticulae are full (2.0 g wet wt) of birch seeds, the resulting energy yield may sustain an individual for only a fraction of a 24 h winter day in contrast to other arctic herbivores (e.g. ptarmigan, Lagopus sp.) in which a full crop may suffice for the full 24 h period.  相似文献

Aerial surveys flown at low altitudes allow detection, identification, and enumeration of waterfowl and other waterbirds, but few studies have assessed disturbance to these guilds during the nonbreeding period. Excessive disturbance can potentially increase energy expenditure and exposure to hunting mortality contrary to objectives of many waterfowl sanctuaries where surveys are conducted. We used concurrent ground and aerial surveys to estimate the proportion of waterfowl and other waterbirds that exhibited a noticeable reaction (i.e., disturbance) or left the survey area entirely (i.e., abandonment) during low-altitude (i.e., 60–90 m above ground level) aerial surveys during September through January 2014–2017 in Illinois, USA. Overall, disturbance and abandonment probabilities of waterfowl (x̄ = 14 ± 2% [SE] and x̄ = 3 ± 1%, respectively) during aerial surveys were low. However, disturbance and abandonment probabilities varied considerably among taxa (e.g., American coot [Fulica americana] x̄ = 2 ± 1% and x̄ = 0 ± 0%, respectively; killdeer [Charadrius vociferus] x̄ = 92 ± 8% and x̄ = 17 ± 17%, respectively). Additionally, disturbance and abandonment probabilities of light geese (i.e., snow goose [Chen caerulescens] and Ross's goose [C. rossii]) and greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) were relatively high, and nearly all light geese abandoned a survey location as a result of the aerial survey. Among waterfowl taxa, the odds of disturbance from the survey aircraft were 2.2–6.2 times greater at locations closed to waterfowl hunting than locations open to waterfowl hunting. Temperature, wind speed, and cloud cover were not important predictors of disturbance for most guilds, except for a negative influence of temperature on disturbance of geese. Low-altitude aerial surveys were not a significant source of disturbance for many taxa and abandonment events were rare, except events involving light geese. Periodic low-altitude aerial surveys appear to be compatible with objectives of providing sanctuary conditions for most waterfowl and other waterbirds. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Objective : Few weight loss supplements are clinically tested for efficacy, yet their proliferation continues. Chitosan‐based supplements are sold as fat trappers and fat magnets. They purportedly block fat absorption and cause weight loss without food restriction. We quantified the in vivo effect of a chitosan product on fat absorption. Research Methods and Procedures : Participants (n = 15) consumed five meals per day for 12 days. Energy intake was not restricted. Participants consumed no supplements during a 4‐day control period and two capsules five times per day (4.5 g chitosan/d), 30 minutes before each meal, during a 4‐day supplement period. All feces were collected from days 2 to 12. Oral charcoal markers permitted division of the feces into two periods. The two fecal pools were analyzed for fat content. Results : Participants were male, 26.3 ± 5.9 years old, BMI of 25.6 ± 2.3 kg/m2. Subjects consumed 133 ± 23 g of fat/d and 12.91 ± 1.79 MJ/d (3084 ± 427 kcal/d). Individual meals averaged 26.3 ± 9.3 g of fat. With chitosan supplementation at 10 capsules/day, fecal fat excretion increased by 1.1 ± 1.8 g/d (p = 0.02), from 6.1 ± 1.2 to 7.2 ± 1.8 g/d. Discussion : The effect of chitosan on fat absorption is clinically negligible. Far from being a fat trapper, at 0.11 ± 0.18 g of fat trapped per 0.45‐g capsule or 1.1 g (9.9 kcal) fat trapped per day, this product would have no significant effect on energy balance. The fat trapping claims associated with chitosan are unsubstantiated.  相似文献

Reproductive systems are life attributes important in defining the demography and genetic constitution of invasive alien species populations. We describe the phenology, floral behavior and floral visitors in Mexican populations of Leonotis nepetifolia considered invasive in America, Asia and Oceania. The mating system was determined through pollination experiments and, with a morphological analysis of flowers (outcrossing index, OCI) and pollen/ovule ratio, the breeding system was evaluated. Germination of 1 and 2-year-old seeds was tested to assess the potential characteristics of germination. Leonotis nepetifolia was reproductive for 7 months (June to December) and tended towards a specific season during autumn. Anthesis lasted 36 hr with protogyny and no hercogamy, with floral visitors of Apodiformes, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera and Thysanoptera. Pollination experiments indicated a mixed mating system, whereas the OCI and the pollen/ovule ratio pointed towards a facultative xenogamous breeding system. Seed production was high (1,445 ± 132 seeds/plant); the seeds had potential longevity and were neutral photoblastic. One-year-old seeds germinated slightly later ( = 2.6 ± 0.11 days) than 2-year-old seeds ( = 1.9 ± 0.02 days), both synchronously (IS1yr = 0.88 ± 0.03 and IS2yr = 0.82 ± 0.02). Germination percentage for 1-year-old seeds was lower (55.33 ± 4.40%) than that of 2-year-old seeds (94.18 ± 0.59%), suggesting a potential longevity of the seeds in an optimal environment. Reproductive characteristics, such as wide reproductive period, mixed breeding system, copious seed production, seeds with potential longevity, and quick and synchronic germination in different light conditions, favor the invasive capacity of Leonotis nepetifolia.  相似文献

Abstract

Three temperate forages, sainfoin, birdsfoot trefoil, and chicory, characterized by elevated contents of plant secondary compounds, were compared to a ryegrass-clover mixture (control) in dried (Experiment 1) and ensiled form (Experiment 2) in their palatability and nutritional value. Palatability was measured in adult wethers (n = 6) allowed to choose between the familiar control forage and one of the three test plants. Palatability index was calculated from differences in intake of control and test plants measured after given times. Generally at first contact, palatability of the unfamiliar plants was low. Lag time until palatability index approached or exceeded a value of 100 was 2 – 5 d, but could not be related to the content of condensed tannins. Sainfoin had a high palatability, the highest content of condensed tannins (77.4 ± 10.23 g/kg DM), a high content of duodenally utilisable crude protein (94.7 ± 16.87 g/100 g CP), and a high content of metabolizable energy (9.5 ± 0.38 MJ ME/kg DM), making this plant most promising for various purposes including anthelmintic action.  相似文献
