Nitrogen (N) losses from agriculture are negatively impacting groundwater, air, and surface water quality. New tools are needed to quickly assess these losses and provide nutrient managers and conservationists with effective tools to assess the effects of current and alternative management practices on N loss pathways. A new N-Index tool was developed in spreadsheet format, allowing prompt assessments of management practices on agricultural N losses. The N-Index tool was compared with experimental field data and shown to estimate the effects of management practices on N loss pathways (probability, P < 0.001). The N-Index correctly assessed the nitrate nitrogen (NO3-N) leaching losses when tested against measured NO3-N leaching data and atmospheric N losses collected over multiple years (annual basis) and locations. The N-Index tool was developed with international cooperation from several countries and there is potential to use this tool at the international level.  相似文献

Wnts are intercellular growth and differentiation factors that regulate several key developmental steps, such as gastrulation, neurulation, and organogenesis, including the development of the midbrain, central nervous system, kidney, and limbs. Wnts are also needed for a normal development of the reproductive system. Deficiency of Wnt-4, -5a, and -7a, for example, results in sex reversal, infertility, and/or malformation of the internal and external genitals. Here we focus on the importance of Wnts in the female reproductive system.  相似文献

In adult tissues, capillary growth (angiogenesis) occurs normally during tissue repair, such as in healing of wounds and fractures. Rampant capillary growth is associated with various pathological conditions, including tumor growth, retinopathies, hemangiomas, fibroses and rheumatoid arthritis. The female reproductive organs (i.e., ovary, uterus, and placenta) exhibit dynamic, periodic growth and regression accompanied by equally dramatic changes in rates of blood flow. It is not surprising, therefore, that they are some of the few adult tissues in which angiogenesis occurs as a normal process. Thus, the female reproductive system provides a unique model for studying regulation of angiogenesis during growth and differentiation of normal adult tissues. Ovarian, uterine, and placental tissues recently have been shown to contain and produce angiogenic and anti-angiogenic factors. This review discusses the current state of knowledge regarding angiogenic processes and their regulation in female reproductive tissues. In addition, implications of this research for regulation of fertility as well as for control of angiogenesis in other normal and pathological processes are discussed.  相似文献

Movements of females of two reptile ticks, Amblyomma limbatum and Aponomma hydrosauri were studied to determine whether the behaviour of the species on hosts was similar or different. Experiments were conducted to determine if the movement of females on hosts prior to mating was influenced by the delayed attachment of conspecific males. A field experiment was also undertaken to determine whether data obtained during laboratory experiments reflected the behaviour of females on hosts in the field. Both in laboratory and field experiments, a significantly greater proportion of Ap. hydrosauri females changed their site of attachment prior to mating. Individual Ap. hydrosauri females made significantly more positional changes than Amb. limbatum females. These interspecific differences occurred irrespective of the absence of conspecific males or presence of non-conspecific adults on hosts. These data may have important ecological implications in relation to the success of colonizing females at their parapatric boundary.  相似文献

Lambda lysogens of Escherichia coli reproduce more rapidly than nonlysogens during aerobic growth in glucose-limited chemostats. If the environment is changed to anaerobic growth, the situation is reversed, and the lysogen reproduces more slowly than the nonlysogen. Based on a tetrazolium dye assay, the increased fitness of the lambda lysogen during aerobic growth seems to result from a continued high metabolic rate as glucose becomes limiting, whereas the metabolic rate of the nonlysogen declines. The lambda rex gene is required for the growth advantage of lysogens since lack of rex function causes lambda lysogens to lose their reproductive advantage over nonlysogens.  相似文献

Influenza virus tissue tropism defines the host cells and tissues that support viral replication and contributes to determining which regions of the respiratory tract are infected in humans. The location of influenza virus infection along the respiratory tract is a key determinant of virus pathogenicity and transmissibility, which are at the basis of influenza burdens in the human population. As the pathogenicity and transmissibility of influenza virus ultimately determine its reproductive fitness at the population level, strong selective pressures will shape influenza virus tissue tropisms that maximize fitness. At present, the relationships between influenza virus tissue tropism within hosts and reproductive fitness at the population level are poorly understood. The selective pressures and constraints that shape tissue tropism and thereby influence the location of influenza virus infection along the respiratory tract are not well characterized. We use mathematical models that link within-host infection dynamics in a spatially-structured human respiratory tract to between-host transmission dynamics, with the aim of characterizing the possible selective pressures on influenza virus tissue tropism. The results indicate that spatial heterogeneities in virus clearance, virus pathogenicity or both, resulting from the unique structure of the respiratory tract, may drive optimal receptor binding affinity-that maximizes influenza virus reproductive fitness at the population level-towards sialic acids with α2,6 linkage to galactose. The expanding cell pool deeper down the respiratory tract, in association with lower clearance rates, may result in optimal infectivity rates-that likewise maximize influenza virus reproductive fitness at the population level-to exhibit a decreasing trend towards deeper regions of the respiratory tract. Lastly, pre-existing immunity may drive influenza virus tissue tropism towards upper regions of the respiratory tract. The proposed framework provides a new template for the cross-scale study of influenza virus evolutionary and epidemiological dynamics in humans.  相似文献

These studies are focused on schistosomes derived from human infections not cured by three successive doses of praziquantel that also produced infections in mice that were significantly more difficult to cure than infections with control worms. Half (three of six) of these isolates retained their decreased response to praziquantel after multiple passages through the life-cycle in the absence of therapeutic pressure. Two of the isolates, including the one initially least sensitive to praziquantel; reverted, to a sensitivity not significantly different from controls. For example, the EE6 isolate initially required 680 mg/kg praziquantel to affect a 50% reduction in worm load in murine infections, but after only six passages through the life cycle over 5 years this was reduced to 113 mg/kg, not different from control infections. The stability of some of the isolates and the reversion of others indicates that the biological or genetic factors conferring decreased praziquantel response varies among the isolates. The three isolates that retained decreased sensitivity to praziquantel all showed compromises in reproductive fitness in the laboratory, expressed most frequently as a decreased cercarial production from snails infected with those isolates compared to controls. For example, the total cercarial production of snails infected with the EE10 isolate was only 57% that of controls. The reversion of some of the isolates to a praziquantel sensitive state and the decreased reproductive fitness of those that did not revert suggest that there is some biological cost associated with the relative praziquantel insensitivity of these worms, which could help limit the impact of such isolates in the field. Infections with the less sensitive isolates also produced significantly less circulating schistosomal antigen in mice, suggesting that a decrease in the host immune response elicited by these worms could be one of the factors contributing to the diminished praziquantel efficacy.  相似文献

The laboratory trials rank the virulence of entomopathogenic nematode strains (3 heterorhabditids and 6 steinernematids) to engorged female Boophilus annulatus ticks according to 3 parameters of the infection process: the effect of exposure time on tick mortality, the quantity of nematodes that penetrate ticks, and the rate of tick mortality after the injection of 1, 2, or 3 nematodes. Exposure of the ticks to heterorhabditid strains for 6 hr resulted in >80% mortality, but only 20 or 65% mortality after exposure to most steinernematids. The quantity of nematodes recovered per tick exposed to nematodes for 6 days averaged from 16 to 141. For steinernematids, a negative correlation was obtained between tick mortality and the average quantity of nematodes recovered. Injecting 1 infective juvenile from 1 of 2 heterorhabditid strains into each tick resulted in close to 100% mortality. Increasing the quantity of nematodes injected into each tick had little or no additive effect on tick mortality.  相似文献

Nectar of butterfly-pollinated flowers contains generally higher levels of amino acids than does nectar of flowers pollinated by most other animal types. One proposed explanation is that these amino acids promote butterfly fitness, although the evidence has been equivocal. In a new study, Mevi-Schütz and Erhardt showed that nectar amino acids enhanced fecundity in the butterfly Araschnia levana, but only when the larval diet was poor. Their results support the hypothesis that butterflies are agents of selection for higher nectar amino acid production, suggest that the larval food plant has a key role in the evolution of the flower-butterfly mutualism, and demonstrate that the importance, to butterfly reproduction, of different nutrient sources varies with butterfly nutritional state.  相似文献

L-Thyroxine (L-T4) was injected into mature rats daily at levels of 0, 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 mug/100 g body weight through estrous cycling, conception, pregnancy, parturition and 20 days of lactation. Mothers which lactated to 20 days were killed and mammary glands measured for DNA and RNA content. Those which were not able to maintain their pups were killed on the day when all pups died. Estrous cycling and pregnancy were not markedly effected by exogenous L-T4 at levels 3-96 times the normal thyroxine secretion rate in rats. After parturition the mothers on L-T4 above 12 mug did not allow the pups to suckle. As a result the pups died within 2-7 days after birth. Levels of L-T4 from 3 to 12 mug allowed lactation to progress, but survival of pups to day 20 of lactation was significantly lower than in the normal control group. The results of this study indicate that high levels of L-T4 inhibit mammary growth and mild secretion. This, in turn, results in the loss of pups, probably through depletion of prolactin as a result of higher metabolic rate due to hyperthyroidism.  相似文献

Andromonoecy, the production of both male and hermaphrodite flowers in the same individual, is a widespread phenomenon that occurs in approximately 4,000 species distributed in 33 families. Hypotheses for the evolution of andromonoecy suggest that the production of intermediate proportions of staminate flowers may be favored by selection acting through female components of fitness. Here we used the andromonoecious herb Solanum carolinense to determine the pattern of selection on the production of staminate flowers. A multivariate analysis of selection indicates that selection through female fitness favors the production of staminate flowers in at least one population. We conclude that this counterintuitive benefit of staminate flowers on female fitness highlights the importance of considering female components of fitness in the evolution of andromonoecy, a reproductive system usually interpreted as a male strategy.  相似文献

The long-term in vivo effects of a single subcurative dose (200 mg/kg body wt of mouse) of praziquantel on the ultrastructure of the female reproductive system of Schistosoma mansoni were investigated. Morphological changes in the structure of both the vitelline gland and the ovary were apparent within 24 hr post-treatment, and lead to a partial or complete regression of both organ systems. Associated with this regression was a cessation of egg production. In surviving, paired females, irrespective of the initial severity of the drug-induced damage, both the vitelline gland and the ovary completely redeveloped and lead eventually to a resumption of egg production. In contrast, in unpaired, previously mature females the reproductive system also regressed but did not redevelop. In these cases, although the initial changes in the reproductive system were the result of drug action, the long-term regressive changes were due to discontinued male stimulation.  相似文献

Circadian rhythms are regulated by a synchronized system of central and peripheral clocks. Here, we show that a clock in the Drosophila fat body drives rhythmic expression of genes involved in metabolism, detoxification, the immune response, and steroid hormone regulation. Some of these genes cycle even when the fat body clock is disrupted, indicating that they are regulated by exogenous factors. Food is an important stimulus, as limiting food availability to a 6?hr interval each day drives rhythmic expression of genes in the fat body. Restricting food to a time of day when consumption is typically low desynchronizes internal rhythms because it alters the phase of rhythmic gene expression in the fat body without affecting the brain clock. Flies maintained on this paradigm produce fewer eggs than those restricted to food at the normal time. These data suggest that desynchrony of endogenous rhythms, caused by aberrant feeding patterns, affects reproductive fitness.  相似文献

We analyzed the long-term effects of postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes on reproductive fitness and longevity of offspring. Hybrid (C57BL/6JIco x CBA/JIco) parental generation (F0) females were artificially inseminated at 13 h (approximately 1 h postovulation) or 22 h (approximately 10 h postovulation) after GnRH injection. Reproductive fitness of first generation (F1) females was tested from the age of 28 wk until the end of their reproductive life. In males, the testing period ranged from the age of 2 yr until their natural death. Experimental F1 females exhibited longer between-labor intervals, decreased frequency of litters, and lower total number of litters and offspring born. Experimental second generation (F2) pups displayed teratogenic defects, higher preweaning mortality, and decreased body weight at weaning. Incidence of infertility was higher in experimental F1 males, which translated into lower total number of offspring born when compared with the control group. Life expectancy of F1 offspring was decreased in the experimental group. These results clearly show that postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes decreases reproductive fitness and longevity of offspring.  相似文献

The microflora of the female reproductive tract is very diverse and plays an important role in both normal and pathological states. The data on the mechanisms of colonization resistance which involve the vaginal microbios (the production of H2O2, organic acids, bacteriocin-like substances, competition for adhesion sites) are presented. The data on the role of individual antagonistically active substances of anaerobic bacteria in suppressing gonococci, fungi, microorganisms, associated with bacterial vaginosis, etc. are given. The leading role of anaerobic microorganisms in the appearance of microecological disturbances, including bacterial vaginosis, is emphasized. The role of the pathogenic properties of anaerobic bacteria for the development of different pathological processes, such as premature birth, postnatal and postoperative purulent septic diseases, inflammation of pelvic organs, cancer of the neck of uterus, is discussed.  相似文献
