Red uakari (Cacajao calvus ucayalii) living near the Communal Reserve Tamshiyacu-Tahuayo in northeastern Peru frequently associate with other species of primate, especially the woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha). In 42 observation follows over 14 months (April 1993 – December 1994), the uakari were in association with other species for all or some portion of time during 62% of the follows. Woolly monkeys were present during 65% of the polyspecific groupings. During 151.5 hr of timed observations, the uakari spent 29.21% of their time with other species, and 76% of their associative time with woolly monkeys. The participants of the associations may benefit from increased predator protection and more efficient use of resource. These data represent the first published notes from a long-term behavioral ecology study of red uakari.  相似文献

The study of vocal behavior can reveal important aspects of how and why a species communicates in relation to ecological and social challenges. We here focus on vocal communication in golden-backed uakaris (Cacajao melanocephalus), diurnal, pitheciine monkeys that exhibit fission-fusion social organization and typically inhabit dense forests that limit the potential for visual communication. Moreover, the species spends little time engaged in tactile or olfactory communication, e.g., social grooming and scent marking, respectively. Hence, vocalizations may be very important for the coordination of social organization in these monkeys. We 1) categorized golden-backed uakari vocalizations, 2) ascertained their behavioral context, and 3) investigated whether golden-backed uakari calls can encode information about the signaler. We observed the monkeys during 2 wet seasons in the flooded igapó forest of Jaú National Park, Brazil. We showed that golden-backed uakaris have 9 call types in their vocal repertoire, all distinguishable by ear and from analysis of spectrograms. Some calls, e.g., play-specific calls, were used only in particular behavioral contexts, and by individuals of specific age, whereas others were emitted under a range of situations. The structure of the loud tchó call varied among individuals, and according to behavioral context, i.e., whether individuals were foraging/feeding, traveling, or performing agonistic interactions. This knowledge of the species’ vocal repertoire is valuable for surveying the monkeys acoustically in habitats where visual surveys are difficult.  相似文献

Parasites are important in the management of the health of primate populations. We examined 36 fecal samples from Peruvian red uakari monkeys (Cacajao calvus ucayalii) collected from wild animals in the northeastern Peruvian Amazon. Samples were positive for helminth infection. Nematodes egg: Strongyloididae, Trypanoxyuris sp., Spirurid, and a cestode egg were identified.  相似文献

The grooming behavior of a group of brown howler monkeys was studied for one year in an Atlantic forest reserve of southeastern Brazil. A total of 290 grooming bouts were recorded and analyzed. The two adult females directed most of the grooming (91%), while the adult male was the major recipient (37%). Grooming between females, and between them and their siblings, also occurred quite often. On average, the group spent 2% of its daily time grooming, with a higher frequency around noon. There were significant differences, however, in time spent grooming between seasons; grooming was more abundant during the coldest seasons (autumn–winter) and rarer in hotter ones (spring–summer). A significant negative correlation was found between grooming time and temperature, but contrary to expectations, grooming time failed to correlate with both the group' diet and the demands of food-gathering, as measured by travelling time and day range length. A comparison of grooming behavior with other species of the genus suggests that brown, red (A. seniculus), and black howler monkeys (A. caraya) are more similar to each other than to mantled howlers (A. palliata), a result that probably is linked with the differing social structure and group size of the latter species. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Social grooming in primates is a complex behavior in which monkeys stroke, pick, or otherwise manipulate a companion’s body surface. While grooming has been associated with important social functions, researchers who have examined its physical characteristics, such as body site preferences, have focused on its role in skin care and ectoparasite removal. Whether the form of social grooming is constrained primarily by utilitarian or social functions was empirically tested by directly comparing this behavior with self-grooming, which was assumed to have primarily utilitarian functions. Predictions made concerning social grooming, based on a comparison with self-grooming, were tested by examining site preferences, duration of grooming (overall and to specific body sites), and method of grooming (stroking, picking, or a combination of the two) in rhesus monkeys. None of these predictions was verified. The physical characteristics of social grooming could not be predicted from the way an animal groomed itself. There was no relationship between site preferences in these two types of grooming. Animals groomed others for longer periods of time than they groomed themselves, both overall and when grooming specific sites. The methods these animals used differed markedly in self-and social grooming: they primarily picked at their own hair or skin but, when grooming others, varied their technique across sites, stroking the hair where it was thickest and picking where the hair was sparse. These results suggest that utilitarian functions are not the most important factors constraining the form of social grooming.  相似文献

Central American squirrel monkeys (Saimiri oerstedi) appear to recognize the modified leaves that phyllostomid bats utilize for diurnal roost sites. The monkeys visually and manually search these bat tents for both bats and insects. Adult males are the most successful at capturing bats. Nonvolant juvenile bats are more vulnerable to monkey predation than are adults. Bats that escape monkey predation frequently are captured by doubletoothed kites (Harpagus bidentatus) that tend foraging troops of monkeys. Predation by squirrel monkeys, coupled with that of double-toothed kites, may be a significant source of mortality for tent-making bats.  相似文献

Serum and urine analytes were compared between adult wild-caught owl monkeys (Aotus nancymae) and adult wild-caught squirrel monkeys (Saimiri peruviensis) to determine if normative clinical pathology data were similar. An objective of the study was to confirm that species of neotropical primates are distinct with regard to physiologic parameters, and should not be considered interchangeable in biomedical research. Significant differences (P < 0.05) were noted in many serum and urine analytes between the two groups. The results suggest that reference data for wild-caught owl monkeys are not applicable to squirrel monkeys, and the differences are sufficiently large to be of clinical significance. These findings illuminate the diversity among species of neotropical primates.  相似文献

Grooming among adult and older juvenile females in a wild group of blue monkeys (Cercopithecus mitis stuhlmanni) is analyzed and related to agonistic behavior. Both grooming and agonistic behavior were less frequent than would be expected in baboon and macaque groups. Fair shares of grooming were given and taken, both within and between interactions, in amost dyads, and all females were seen to groom with at least half the others. The reciprovity of grooming was its most outstanding feature. There was no evidence that grooming was preferentially directed at kin. Frequent grooming partnerships fell into two clusters, one of which ranked higher than the other. We suggest that grooming throughout the group helps to establish a coherent team of females which effectively, defends its territory in daily encounters at the boundaries with neighboring groups.  相似文献

In previous research, male chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) were found to be more ‘conciliatory’ than females, in that after aggressive incidents males more often engaged in socially positive contact with former opponents. The first part of the present paper presents similar results for a large breeding troop of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta). To investigate further the possible sex difference in postconflict behaviour, a series of experiments was carried out on small isosexual groups of young rhesus monkeys, three male and three female groups. Food competition was created by providing either a single apple piece (Monopoly test) or a handful of small pieces (Equality test). Observations lasted for 30 min, and behaviour in tests without food provisioning was also recorded. The predicted response to food was an increase in aggression followed by restorative behaviour, such as grooming. In Equality tests both sexes showed similar responses, i.e. increased aggression and decreased grooming and cohesiveness. In Monopoly tests, however, their responses differed. After the aggression increase, which occurred in all groups, males showed a significant increase in grooming and cohesiveness, whereas females showed the (non-significant) opposite trend. Another sex difference was that changes in grooming and aggression frequencies were related to the rank order in female groups, but not in male groups. Since there was no evidence for a direct causal connection between grooming and aggression, a new model is introduced which links grooming behaviour to the type of food provision rather than to the social disturbance by aggression. According to this model inequality in food distribution causes social tensions. Males actively try to reduce these tensions, whereas females do not. Some alternative explanations are also discussed.  相似文献

The giant freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, is a large shrimp extensively used in aquaculture whose grooming behaviors were analyzed in this study. Macrobrachium rosenbergii exhibits three unique male morphotypes that differ in their behavior, morphology and physiology: small-clawed males (SM), orange-clawed males (OC) and blue-clawed males (BC). The largest and most dominant males, BC males, are predicted to have significantly different grooming behaviors compared to females and the other two male morphotypes. These BC males may be too large and bulky to efficiently groom and may dedicate more time to mating and agonistic interactions than grooming behaviors. Observations were conducted to look at the prevalence of grooming behaviors in the absence and presence of conspecifics and to determine if any differences in grooming behavior exist among the sexes and male morphotypes. Significant differences in the grooming behaviors of all individuals (females and male morphotypes) were found. BC males tended to have the highest grooming time budget (percent of time spent grooming) while SM males had a relatively low grooming time budget. The grooming behaviors of the male morphotypes differed, indicating while these males play distinct, separate roles in the social hierarchy, they also have different grooming priorities. The conditions in which Macrobrachium rosenbergii are cultured may result in increased body fouling, which may vary, depending on the grooming efficiencies and priorities of these male morphotypes. Overall, grooming behaviors were found to be a secondary behavior which only occurred when primary behaviors such as mating, feeding or fighting were not present.  相似文献

According to a biological market paradigm, trading decisions between partners will be influenced by the current ‘exchange rate’ of commodities (good and services), which is affected by supply and demand, and the trader’s ability to outbid competitors. In several species of nonhuman primates, newborn infants are attractive to female group members and may become a desired commodity that can be traded for grooming within a biological market place. We investigated whether grooming was interchanged for infant handling in female golden snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus roxellana) inhabiting the Qinling Mountains of central China. R. roxellana exhibit a multilevel social organization characterized by over 100 troop members organized into 6–11 one-male units each composed one adult male and several adult females and their offspring. Behavioral data were collected over the course of 28 months on grooming patterns between mothers with infants less than 6 months old (N = 36) and other adult female troop members. Our results provide strong evidence for the interchange of grooming for access to infants. Grooming for infant access was more likely to be initiated by potential handlers (nonmothers) and less likely reciprocated by mothers. Moreover, grooming bout duration was inversely related to the number of infants per female present in each one-male unit indicating the possibility of a supply and demand market effect. The rank difference between mothers and handlers was negatively correlated with grooming duration. With increasing infant age, the duration of grooming provided by handlers was shorter suggesting that the ‘value’ of older infants had decreased. Finally, frequent grooming partners were allowed to handle and maintain access to infants longer than infrequent groomers. These results support the contention that grooming and infant handling may be traded in R. roxellana and that the price individuals paid for access to infants fluctuated with supply and demand.  相似文献

I investigated the effect of the density of louse eggs (Pedicinus obtusus andP. eurygaster) on grooming site preferences in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Louse eggs were more often found on the outer side of the body (upper back, lower back, outer arms, and outer legs) than on the inner side of the body (chest, belly, inner arms, and inner legs). Japanese macaques were more likely to be groomed on the outer side than the inner side of the body by allogrooming and autogrooming. Such grooming site preferences correlated with the distribution of louse eggs but not with the areas of body parts. Thus, the ecology of lice might affect grooming behavior of Japanese macaques. Five hundred and fifty louse eggs were estimated to parasitize an adult female Japanese macaque. Considering the intrinsic rate of natural increase of lice, monkeys need to be groomed almost every day. This suggests that Japanese macaques need grooming partners and form social bonds with others for everyday grooming.  相似文献

Natural conceptual discriminations have been tested in many different species, including pigeons and a variety of non-human primates. The ability of four male squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) to learn and use the natural concept ‘squirrel monkey’ was investigated in this study. After a training phase, subjects were presented with novel stimuli in transfer and test trials. All subjects performed at a rate significantly above chance on the first test trial (p<.001), indicating that squirrel monkeys can utilize natural concepts in the laboratory.  相似文献

Anointing and grooming behaviors of the adult of Singapora shinshana (Matsumura) (Erythroneurini), Empoascanara (Empoascanara) mai Dworakowska (Erythroneurini), Austroasca vittata (Lethierry) (Empoascini), and Limassolla diospyri Chou et Ma (Zyginellini) were recorded and analysed. Through observation and analysis of their anointing and grooming, we found that there is a preparation stage before anointing behavior in typhlocybines. Anointing and grooming are repeated several times and the numbers and interval times differ from species to species among the Typhlocybinae. Ultramorphological examination of brochosomes and the morphology of the brochosome field, metathoracic tibiae and the structures on the head, face, mesothorax and pygofer of E. mai were done using a scanning electron microscope. Brochosomes (IBS) on the cuticle of typhlocybine adults were spherical visible above these integument. Characteristics of anointing and grooming behavior, the provide evidence that the brochosome field may function as a storage site in preparation for the next grooming session.  相似文献

The anthropoid primate placenta appears to be unique in producing corticotropin‐releasing hormone (CRH). Placental CRH is involved in an endocrine circuit key to the production of estrogens during pregnancy. CRH induces cortisol production by the maternal and fetal adrenal glands, leading to further placental CRH production. CRH also stimulates the fetal adrenal glands to produce dehydroepiandrostendione sulfate (DHEAS), which the placenta converts into estrogens. There are at least two patterns of maternal circulating CRH across gestation among anthropoids. Monkeys examined to date (Papio and Callithrix) have an early‐to‐mid gestational peak of circulating CRH, followed by a steady decline to a plateau level, with a possible rise near parturition. In contrast, humans and great apes have an exponential rise in circulating CRH peaking at parturition. To further document and compare patterns of maternal circulating CRH in anthropoid primates, we collected monthly blood samples from 14 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) and ten owl monkeys (Aotus nancymaae) during pregnancy. CRH immunoreactivity was measured from extracted plasma by using solid‐phase radioimmunoassay. Both squirrel and owl monkeys displayed a mid‐gestational peak in circulating CRH: days 45–65 of the 152‐day gestation for squirrel monkeys (mean±SEM CRH=2,694±276 pg/ml) and days 60–80 of the 133‐day gestation for owl monkeys (9,871±974 pg/ml). In squirrel monkeys, circulating CRH declined to 36% of mean peak value by 2 weeks before parturition and then appeared to increase; the best model for circulating CRH over gestation in squirrel monkeys was a cubic function, similar to previous results for baboons and marmosets. In owl monkeys, circulating CRH appeared to reach plateau with no subsequent significant decline approaching parturition, although a cubic function was the best fit. This study provides additional evidence for a mid‐gestational peak of maternal circulating CRH in ancestral anthropoids that has been lost in the hominoid lineage. Am. J. Quantitative methods of observation and analysis were used in a 12-month study of grooming behavior of free-rangingMacaca mulatta on La Cueva Island at La Parguera, Puerto Rico. Observations lasting 30–120 minutes were made from eight positions on the island at a standard time of day when monkeys were either feeding or resting. Two dependent variables were obtained: (1) the number of monkeys present in the observation area were noted by age and sex class at five-minute intervals throughout each observation, and (2) the frequency of grooming encounters was tabulated by the age and sex class(es) of groomer and recipient. These data were computed as grooms/hour/possible interacting combination of monkeys. Grooming frequencies were higher in non-feeding situations than when monkeys were feeding. The largest social group had the lowest mean grooming rates, while the smallest group had the highest grooming frequencies. More grooming occurred during the November-to-February mating season than at other periods of the year. Adult females were involved in over 60% of all grooming behavior, juveniles participated in 25% of the grooming, while adult males groomed females, primarily during the mating season, and rarely groomed other males or juveniles. Genealogical relationships, levels of group aggression and the feeding or resting context all influenced the frequency of grooming. This study provides support for the hypothesis that the basic social unit for rhesus macaques consists of a core of adult females with their juvenile and infant progeny.  相似文献

Nonhuman primates are the experimental animals of choice for the study of many human diseases. As such, it is important to understand that endemic viruses of primates can potentially affect the design, methods, and results of biomedical studies designed to model human disease. Here we review the viruses known to be endemic in squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.). The pathogenic potential of these viruses in squirrel monkeys that undergo experimental manipulation remains largely unexplored but may have implications regarding the use of squirrel monkeys in biomedical research.Abbreviations: HTLV1, human T-cell leukemia virus type 1; HVS, herpesvirus saimiri; IPF, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis; SaHV, Saimiriine herpesvirus; SFV, simian foamy virus; SM-CMV, squirrel monkey cytomegalovirus; SMPyV, squirrel monkey polyomavirus; SMRV, squirrel monkey retrovirusThe similarity between the nonhuman primate and human immune systems is a key advantage in the use of nonhuman primates compared with other mammalian models of human disease.13,71,88,94,103,113,125 In addition, the diversity of environmental and infectious disease agents encountered by primates is similar to that of humans, providing nonhuman primates a comparable level of biologic complexity.1 Old World primates, such as macaques and baboons, and New World primates, including squirrel monkeys and marmosets, are commonly used in biomedical research. Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) are neotropical primates native to the forests of Central and South America. Of the 7 species of squirrel monkey, 3 (S. oerstedii, S. vanzolinii, and S. ustus) are classified as endangered, vulnerable to extinction in the wild, or near threatened, whereas the remaining 4 (S. boliviensis, S. cassiquiarensis, S. macrodon, and S. sciureus) are not endangered, although the S. cassiquiarensis albigena subspecies is near threatened52,81 (Figure 1). In South America, where squirrel monkeys are indigenous, breeding colonies of S. sciureus have been maintained at the Pasteur Institute in French Guiana and at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil.7,12 In the United States, the Squirrel Monkey Breeding and Research Resource, an NIH-sponsored national research resource, maintains breeding colonies for S. boliviensis boliviensis, S. sciureus sciureus, and S. boliviensis peruviensis.Open in a separate windowFigure 1.Taxonomy of Saimiri species with associated IUCN designations.52,81Squirrel monkeys adapt easily to laboratory housing and can be housed in smaller spaces than can Old World primates.1 Unlike when working with Old World primates, particularly macaques, no additional personnel protective equipment is necessary when working with squirrel monkeys beyond that recommended for working with other New World primates.92 Their small size, combined with the reduced need for personnel protective equipment during handling, make squirrel monkeys attractive species for model development and for studies of viral pathogenesis, which cost approximately 30% to 40% less than comparable studies in macaques.1 The likelihood of zoonotic transmission of infectious pathogens is considerably less than that associated with macaques and the risk of Macacine herpesvirus 1 (B virus) is nonexistent, given that neotropical primates do not harbor this lethal virus.1 These factors are increasingly important in the current climate of limited grant funding for biomedical research and emphasis on safety for laboratory personnel. The limited availability of immunologic reagents with specificity for neotropical primates has hindered broader use of squirrel monkeys in biomedical research, compared with that of the more commonly used Old World primates. In addition, the small size of neotropical primates limits the volume of blood that can be collected at any one time. To abrogate these limitations, the NIH Nonhuman Primate Reagent Resource (www.nhpreagents.org) provides an increasing repertoire of agents that have been characterized for immunologic studies of neotropical primates.89Squirrel monkeys are used in numerous aspects of biomedical research, including studies of viral persistence, neuroendocrinology, infectious diseases, cancer treatments, vaccine development, gene expression, and reproductive physiology.117 The similarity between the squirrel monkey immune system and that of humans means that, as with macaques, there is a high likelihood that research outcomes will recapitulate what occurs in human diseases.13,71,87,94 This is particularly true for the study of several notable infectious diseases, including malaria, Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, and human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV1) infection.19,56,128 For these diseases, squirrel monkeys are the model system of choice for studying pathogenesis, experimental treatments, and strategies for prevention.Squirrel monkeys are recognized as some of the most susceptible nonhuman primate species for the experimental transmission of Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease and other transmissible spongiform encephalopathies that cause chronic wasting disease.11,72,98,130 The experimental infection of squirrel monkeys with HTLV1 has led to their use in vaccine development and chemotherapy research directed against HTLV1.44,57,58,82 In addition, squirrel monkeys are an important model for studying the immunology of malaria and for testing vaccines against several Plasmodium species.19,20,68,114 Furthermore, squirrel monkeys have been used in pharmacologic research to raise HDL levels to prevent atherosclerosis and reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.6 As the use of squirrel monkeys increases, especially for infectious disease research, accurate information about the endemic viral infections of squirrel monkeys is needed because of the potential for zoonotic transfer of these viruses to humans (and vice versa) and to understand the potential influence these agents may have on research involving other infectious pathogens diseases and immunosuppressive drugs.  相似文献

For a symbiosis to be a mutualism, benefits received must exceed costs incurred for both partners. Partners can prevent costly overexploitation through behaviors that moderate interactions with the other symbiont. In a symbiosis between crayfish and branchiobdellidan annelids, the worms can increase crayfish survival and growth by removing fouling material from the gills. However, overexploitation by the worms is possible and results in damage to host gills. We used behavioral observations to assess the degree to which two species of crayfish (Cambarus chasmodactylus and Orconectes cristavarius) use grooming to moderate their interaction with branchiobdellids. We found that grooming could effectively reduce worm numbers, and the proportion of total grooming directed at worms differed between crayfish species and as a function of worm number. O. cristavarius increased grooming in response to the addition of a single worm, while C. chasmodactylus only increased grooming in response to ten worms. These differences in the number of worms that trigger grooming behavior reflect differences between crayfish species in field settings. We also assessed whether antibacterial compounds in circulating crayfish hemolymph could limit bacterial gill fouling. O. cristavarius hemolymph inhibited some test bacteria more effectively than C. chasmodactylus did. Differences in the antibacterial properties of crayfish hemolymph may therefore help explain differences in both worm-directed grooming and worm loads in the field. We conclude that crayfish can use grooming to reduce worm numbers, which could lower the potential for gill damage, and that the level of grooming varies between crayfish species.  相似文献

Among fossil primates, the Eocene adapiforms have been suggested as the closest relatives of living anthropoids (monkeys, apes, and humans). Central to this argument is the form of the second pedal digit. Extant strepsirrhines and tarsiers possess a grooming claw on this digit, while most anthropoids have a nail. While controversial, the possible presence of a nail in certain European adapiforms has been considered evidence for anthropoid affinities. Skeletons preserved well enough to test this idea have been lacking for North American adapiforms. Here, we document and quantitatively analyze, for the first time, a dentally associated skeleton of Notharctus tenebrosus from the early Eocene of Wyoming that preserves the complete bones of digit II in semi-articulation. Utilizing twelve shape variables, we compare the distal phalanges of Notharctus tenebrosus to those of extant primates that bear nails (n = 21), tegulae (n = 4), and grooming claws (n = 10), and those of non-primates that bear claws (n = 7). Quantitative analyses demonstrate that Notharctus tenebrosus possessed a grooming claw with a surprisingly well-developed apical tuft on its second pedal digit. The presence of a wide apical tuft on the pedal digit II of Notharctus tenebrosus may reflect intermediate morphology between a typical grooming claw and a nail, which is consistent with the recent hypothesis that loss of a grooming claw occurred in a clade containing adapiforms (e.g. Darwinius masillae) and anthropoids. However, a cladistic analysis including newly documented morphologies and thorough representation of characters acknowledged to have states constituting strepsirrhine, haplorhine, and anthropoid synapomorphies groups Notharctus tenebrosus and Darwinius masillae with extant strepsirrhines rather than haplorhines suggesting that the form of pedal digit II reflects substantial homoplasy during the course of early primate evolution.  相似文献
