The cortex of the thymus glands of embryos, chicks, juveniles, fledglings and adults from several colonies of Quelea quelea were studied using an image analyser (Quantimet 720) to determine cell populations and nuclear sizes. Just prior to hatching the lobes showed a high level of mitosis and consisted of predominantly small lymphocytes. The larger glands of chicks and juveniles had higher cell populations; pyknotic cells and erythrocytes occurred free in the cortex. The lobes of adults were more variable but in general mitosis occurred in enlarging glands of adults from colonies with eggs; most lobes contained pyknotic cells but not in such high numbers as in lobes from chicks and fledglings. Erythrocytes were common, occurring in large numbers in the cortex in some birds. The factors affecting the interpretation of these data are discussed in detail.  相似文献

Combined morphological and analytical studies with the EMMA-4 analytical electron microscope have enabled very early erythroid cells to be identified within the cortex of enlarging thymic lobes of Quelea quelea. These early erythroid cells have pale cytoplasm (sometimes with ferritin-like crystals present), slightly pachychromatic nuclei and have fewer cell organelles (mitochondria) than lymphocytes. Counts for iron were approximately 70% lower than counts from mature erythrocytes found free in the cortex. Iron was also recorded from some epithelial reticular cells and pyknotic nuclei; no iron was recorded from small lymphocytes (thymocytes) in the cortex. The presence of very early erythroid cells is a further indication that erythropoiesis occurs in situ in the avian thymus.  相似文献

In order to detect sex-biased dispersal in the red-billed quelea Quelea quelea in southern Africa, we used the assignment index technique to determine the probability that individuals originated from the population in which they were sampled. This is the first time that this multilocus genetic test has been used in a bird species and is informative despite evidence that the population under study exhibits little genetic structure. There was a pattern of male-biased dispersal, the first example in a passerine, and the first time that evidence of a sex-biased pattern of dispersal has been shown for queleas.  相似文献

Migration patterns in the red-billed quelea Quelea quelea have been the focus of intense research as the species is a major crop pest in Africa. The direction and timing of migration are believed to be controlled by the seasonal passage of rainfronts across Africa. In order to assess the validity of hypothesised migration directions in southern Africa, we tested the migration orientation behaviour of wild-caught red-billed queleas using Emlen orientation funnels. Queleas tested in Zimbabwe showed mean orientation directions to the west-north-west and east-south-east. Both directions are in agreement with current hypotheses explaining quelea migration.  相似文献

The red-billed quelea Quelea quelea , one of the most abundant birds in the world, presents two fundamental conundrums that we investigate here with a novel approach using blood parasite assemblages at two spatial scales, landscape and individual. The quelea of southern Africa Q. q. lathamii are split by a hypothesized migratory divide, where birds follow rain fronts in one of two directions (NW or SE). This divide is not detectable in the host population using microsatellite data, and here we show that it is also not apparent from our large-scale phylogeographical analyses of the haematozoan parasite. At a finer scale, the colourful and variable breeding plumage of male red-billed quelea has not previously shown a correlation with predictors of quality, as it does in many other bird species. The male's breeding plumage is partially based on carotenoid colouration, the quality of which has been correlated with haematozoan infection in other bird species. However, we found no correlation between intensity of male carotenoid colouration and haematozoan infection. Our results do not contradict the hypothesis that male breeding plumage in this species serves to identify individuals rather than to indicate quality. Finally, we recovered the greatest number of haematozoan lineages from any phylogenetic survey of a single host species to date. Understanding the reasons for the extreme diversity of parasite lineages in this species may assist in explaining the success of the red-billed quelea in anthropogenic landscapes.  相似文献

Cross-sectional areas of bronchi and bronchial glands of pigs aged from 1 day to 10 months were measured using image analysis. Growth of the bronchial glands was slow for the first month of life, reached a maximum between 1 and 3 months, and slowed again after 5 months. Mucous gland sizes fell into two groups, one included the apical, cardiac and accessory lobes, the other the diaphragmatic lobes. From birth to maturity the percentage increase in mucous gland area of all lobes was very similar. For the anterior lobes, mucous glands and bronchial lumina grew in direct proportion to each other. Up to 1 month of age the bronchial lumina of the diaphragmatic lobes grew but the glands did not. Later, glands and lumina grew in direct proportion. From birth to maturity the percentage increase in bronchial cross-sectional area was similar for all lobes.  相似文献

The study investigates activity changes in neurons of the lateral accessory lobes in the brain of the locust Schistocerca gregaria during wind-elicited tethered flight. Neurons with ascending projections from the ventral nerve cord to the lateral accessory lobes showed flight-associated excitations which were modulated in the flight motor rhythm. Descending neurons with ramifications in the lateral accessory lobes were tonically excited corresponding to flight duration. The onset of wind-elicited responses in the descending neurons preceded the onset of flight motor activity by 22–60 milliseconds. Neurons connecting the lateral accessory lobes with the central body, the anterior optic tubercles, or other brain areas showed a variety of responses including activity changes during flight initiation and flight termination. Activity in many of these neurons was less tightly coupled to the flight situation and often returned to background levels before flight was terminated. Most of the recorded neurons responded, in addition, to stationary visual stimuli. The results suggest that the lateral accessory lobes in the locust brain are integrative links between the central body, visual pathways, and the ventral nerve cord. The possible involvement of these brain areas in flight control is discussed.  相似文献

Immunoreactive processes are found in different layers of the neuropils. The immunoreactive neurons are amacrines and columnar or noncolumnar neurons connecting the optic lobe neuropils. In addition some large immunoreactive neurons connect the optic lobes with centers of the brain.Some neuron types could be matched with neurons previously identified with other methods. The relative sizes of 30 lobes of the brains of 63 species of cephalopods have been compared. Some of the observed differences could be related to the way of life of the animal and others to the taxonomic relationships. The octopods are separated from the decapods by their larger brachial and other suboesophageal lobes, larger inferior frontal systems and smaller optic lobes. Vampyroteulhis lies somewhat between these two main groups. The vertical lobe system is large in sepioids and loliginids, smaller in decapods from deeper water, but large in Vampyroteuthis. In octopods, it is large in the typical epibenthic forms but smaller in those from deeper water and very small in cirrates. The inferior frontal system is very large in epibenthic octopods and Benthoctopus and in cirrates, but smaller in epipelagic and bathypelagic forms. The optic lobes are larger in decapods than in octopods from comparable depths and are especially large in deep-sea decapods. They are larger in epipelagic octopods than in the typical benthic forms. The photosensitive vesicles vary by nearly two orders of magnitude. They are very small in squids living in surface waters, larger in mesopelagic forms and enormous in some cranchiids and in Balhyteuthis. In Histioteulhis , the side with the larger eye had an optic lobe twice as big as that on the side of the smaller eye, but with only slight differences in other parts of the brain. In the octopods, the inferior frontal system was generally large, being concerned with the tactile memory system, and tends to be inversely related to the size of the optic lobe.  相似文献

The cortex of enlarging thymic lobes from adult haemorrhaged Quelea quelea were found to be similar to those of wild birds where the thymic enlargement was occurring naturally. A detailed stereological analysis of cells broadly designated as lymphoid, and the construction of models to account for the results, indicates that the enlarging thymic lobe contains both large and small blast cells, a heterogenous group of medium lymphocytes, erythroid cells, and two types of very small lymphocytes. The distinction between early erythroid cells and some lymphocytes, despite this detailed analysis is very difficult, but it is possible in enlarging thymic lobes that up to 42% of the lymphoid cells may have erythroid characteristics.  相似文献

Previous work on agonistic behaviour in Quelea has been concerned primarily with hormonal variables. In the present series of experiments, a number of behavioural correlates of aggression and dominance are examined in male and bisexual groups. These include the effects of group arousal level on rates of agonistic encounters, the relationship between an individual's habitual level of activity and its relative dominance, aggressiveness and position on the perch in a resting "flock". The temporal patterning of encounters is analysed and the reasons why encounters tend to clump in time determined. The relationship between dominance in encounters over individual-distance infringements and dominance in encounters over access to a restricted food source is investigated and the effects of this on loss of weight in males and females determined. The results are discussed in relation to Ward's (1965) finging that in the wild females suffer higher mortality than males during the dry season and in relation to the general determinants of aggression in Quelea.  相似文献

A migratory divide usually signals the presence of a geographical region over which other traits, such as morphology and genotypes, also undergo rapid change. A migratory divide has been hypothesized in central southern Africa for the abundant migratory weaver, the red-billed quelea Quelea quelea. The positioning of the divide in the region is based on the patterns of rainfall in the region that stimulate the annual migrations of queleas. Evidence indicates that premigratory queleas near the divide show two distinct preferred directions for migration. We used eight polymorphic microsatellite loci and a range of plumage characters to determine whether there was population structure among red-billed queleas in southern Africa, and specifically whether this structure coincided with the location of the migratory divide. There was no evidence of population genetic structure. An amova revealed no significant differences between samples taken either side of the migratory divide. Similarly, there was no geographical variation in plumage patterns across southern Africa. For both microsatellites and plumage characteristics, the variation that does exist occurs within each sampled site, with little differentiation between sites. We were therefore unable to find any evidence that either plumage or microsatellite genotypes varied in a similar way to migratory direction preference in red-billed queleas in southern Africa. This is perhaps because the migratory divide does not act to separate individuals into populations within which genetic and plumage differentiation can be maintained.  相似文献

The radial growth (RG) of 120 lobes from 35 thalli of the foliose lichenParmelia conspersa (Ehrh. ex Ach.) Ach. was studied monthly over 22 months in south Gwynedd, Wales, UK. Autocorrelation analysis of each lobe identified three patterns of fluctuation: I) random fluctuations (58% of lobes), 2) a cyclic pattern of growth (23% of lobes), and 3) fluctuating growth interrupted by longer periods of very low or zero growth (19% of lobes). In 80% of thalli, two or three patterns of fluctuation were present within the same thallus. Growth fluctuations were correlated with climatic variables in 31% of lobes, most commonly with either total rainfall or number of rain days per month. Lobes correlated with climate were not associated with a particular type of growth fluctuation. RG of a lobe was positively correlated with the degree of bifurcation of the lobe tip. It is hypothesised that lobes ofP. conspersa exhibit a cyclic pattern of growth due in part to lobe division. The effects of climate, periods of zero growth, and microvariationsin the environment of a lobe are superimposed on this cyclic pattern resulting in the random growth of many lobes. Random growth fluctuations may contribute to the maintenance of thallus symmetry inP. conspersa.  相似文献

The pyloric caeca of the starfish Asterias rubens were investigated histochemically during the reproductive cycle. The median duct and the side lobes reacted differently. The median duct reacted positively for acid phosphatases and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, whereas the side lobes reacted positively for alkaline phosphatases, neutral lipids, and fatty acids. In the transition zone between the median duct and the side lobes, the reaction for alkaline phosphatases and neutral lipids increased toward the side lobes. The function of the enzymes and the histochemical results are discussed in relation to the function of the pyloric caeca and to the reproductive cycle.  相似文献

Many new chemicals come into use each year, and the need for rapid and cost-effective methods for testing developmental toxicity is apparent. Establishing reliable in vitro techniques is important to a tier approach to testing for developmental toxicity. The fetal mouse salivary gland was selected as a possible test system because several interacting developmental processes occur in gland growth, and development is quantifiable by counting lobes. For each chemical tested, 20 glands from 13-day embryos were treated in a control media and in three concentrations of the test chemicals. The number of lobes present after 48 hours is dependent on the number of lobes at explantation. Glands with different numbers of lobes at explantation were compared by dividing the number of lobes present after 48 hours by the number present at explantation to determine a growth ratio. Mean growth ratios were used to construct dose-response curves, and from these curves the concentration that reduced growth by 50% (TP50) was determined. Comparisons with in vivo data were made by calculating three ratios; the TP50 was divided into the lowest teratogenic dose, the lowest maternal toxic dose, and the dose that was lethal to 50%. Four in vivo teratogens, 6-aminonicotinamide, cytochalasin B, hydroxyurea, and 3-acetylpyridine, all had ratios much higher than 1, indicating a very sensitive response by the glands. One in vivo teratogen, dexamethasone, had much lower ratios, indicating less sensitivity. Acetaminophen, a nonteratogen in vivo, actually stimulated growth of the glands at 10(-5) M and had very low ratios indicating a minimal response by the glands.  相似文献

The fine structure of the salivary glands of Cymatium intermediusis described. It is concluded that both the posterior acid secretingand anterior acinous lobes are homologous with the salivaryglands of other prosobranchs. At least six different types ofsecretion have been identified and their possible roles discussed.The anterior lobes secrete mucin and proteins believed to beenzymes, and the posterior lobes are specialized for acid productionas well as secreting protein (probably a peptide toxin). 1. The incorporation of glucose carbon in vivo into amino acids was studied in the chick optic lobes and cerebellum during postnatal growth after subcutaneous injection of [U-14C]glucose. 2. The rapid incorporation of glucose carbon into free amino acids appears between the 1st and the 2nd day of postnatal growth in the optic lobes and between the 1st and the 4th day after hatching in the cerebellum. 3. The period during which the properties of mature brain metabolism are obtained is characterized in both structures during the first 48 hr of postnatal growth by changes in the specific radioactivity of some amino acids such as aspartate and alpha-alanine, and also by transient increases of glucose and glutamine concentrations. 4. The gamma-aminobutyrate content in the optic lobes is very high; the cerebellum on the contrary is characterized by its low gamma-aminobutyrate concentration linked to a very fast metabolism of this amino acid.  相似文献

Previous work with male Quelea showed that agonistic behaviour in relation to individual distance is controlled by luteinizing hormone (LH), rather than by testosterone, and that males are more aggressive than females. Experiments with female groups are reported which show that: (a) LH injections increase aggressive encounter frequency; (b) ovariectomy in the breeding season (but not outside it) also increases encounter frequency; and (c) oestrogen injections decrease encounter frequency. The effects of LH were shown to be specific to agonistic responses rather than mediated through changes in activity. Correlations between changes in natural hormone levels and encounter frequency support the injection findings. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that LH controls aggressive encounters over individual distance in the female as in the male and that oestrogenic inhibition of this LH-mediated aggressiveness is a cause of female subordination and the lower encounter frequency found in female groups. The annual cycle of encounter frequency is described and the significance of different systems of hormonal control is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Neural lobes and portions of occipital cortex from rats were examined electron microscopically following fixation in 4% tannic acid in 2.5% glutaraldehyde. The procedure allowed a clear demonstration of the perivascular space and intercellular spaces in both tissues. The perivascular spaces in the neurosecretory tissue was far more extensive than in the neural tissue and the role of this region in relation to the process of neurosecretion is discussed.  相似文献
