A model of associative memory for time varying spatial patterns is proposed and simulated on a digital computer. This is a network composed of many neuron-like elements, and shows an ability for associative memory similar to that of the brain.Suppose a number of sequences of spatial patterns are presented to this network, for example, 12345, ABC, and so on. Then, these patterns are memorized in the network. After that, if any part of one of these sequences, say 23, is presented to the circuit, the rest of the sequence, 45, is recalled following to it. It resembles to such a situation — if we hear a part of a melody which we have memorized in the past, the rest of the melody is recalled even after it is stopped half-way. Although the recalled patterns are not always 100% correct, they are not completely destroyed even if the presented patterns are imperfect.  相似文献

Summary Intestinal lipid absorption and transport were investigated in albino rats. The observations point towards the existence of a continuity between plasma membrane invaginations and elements of the Golgi complex on its mature face. They also suggest a segregation of lipid droplets by paired Golgi membranes and plasma membrane invaginations. The following way for lipid transport is deduced: lipid droplets moving inside the smooth endoplasmic reticulum accumulate progressively and are condensed in Golgi cisternae of the forming face. Their limiting membrane ruptures and liberated lipid droplets are segregated by paired Golgi membranes of the mature face or by plasma membrane invaginations. Subsequently the inner of the two segregating membranes disappears while the lipid droplet is moved towards the intercellular space inside a canal communicating with this space. The suggestion is made that the Golgi apparatus is of double origin: one component representing a terminal plication of the endoplasmic reticulum; the second one—a terminal plication of the plasma membrane invagination. This concept explains the ultrastructural and histochemical differences between Golgi membranes of the forming and mature faces of the complex.  相似文献

Feulgen and silver-stained karyotypes and meiosis of two triploid viviparous onion forms (Allium cepa var.viviparum), the Croatian Ljutika and the Indian Pran, were comparatively analyzed. The results of chromosome measurements show that Ljutika and Pran are karyologically not identical, although significant similarities were found in the morphology of their chromosomes. Five geographically distant clones of Ljutika showed good agreement in the number and gross morphology of the chromosomes and in the number and position of NORs and interphase nucleoli. Heterotrivalents were predominant in meiosis of Ljutika but a relatively high frequency of higher multivalents together with univalents and bivalents were also observed. The relationship between Ljutika and Pran and their possible origin are discussed.

Summary Four types of striated muscle fibers with distinctive ultrastructure were defined in the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa, L.): white, intermediate, and red fibers of m. parietalis, and red fibers of m. craniovelaris.White fibers are thick, contain very few mitochondria and fat vacuoles, and possess distinct and separate myofibrils with thin Z-disks and distinct M-lines. Intermediate fibers are thinner, possess largely similar myofibrils that often are even better separated due to a higher content of fat vacuoles and especially mitochondria and glycogen granules. Red fibers of m. parietalis contain large amounts of mitochondria, fat vacuoles, and glycogen granules. Their myofibrils possess M-lines, and although branching more, the myofibrils of red fibers conform with a Fibrillenstruktur pattern like those of white and intermediate fibers. Red fibers of m. craniovelaris are very thin, possess many smaller fat vacuoles, and large amounts of mitochondria and glycogen granules. The myofibrils are significantly thinner than in m. parietalis fibers, run as quite independent well separated units, possess thicker Z-disks, and lack M-lines. Large amounts of myosatellite cells are associated with these red fibers.Triads are located near A/I-junctions in all four fiber types and occur irregularly, the density of triads being different in the various fiber types. We are indebted to Dr. Finn Walvig, Biological Station, University of Oslo, Drøbak, for supply of hagfishes, and we also wish to thank Dr. Jan K. S. Jansen, Institute of Physiology, University of Oslo, for valuable suggestions during this study.  相似文献

Embryogenetic pathways differ markedly among monotremes, marsupials, and placentals, and their analysis provides information of fundamental importance to recognition of mammalian evolutionary directions. The cap of cuboidal cells of the marsupial late unilaminar blastocyst, generally known as the embryonic area, probably is induced to form (prior to origin of Hensen's node) by signals from earliest hypoblastic cells (anterior visceral endoderm). The thickened cap is a medullary plate of sauropsid terminology because it includes epiblastic cells presumptive to neurectoderm (including neural crest), Hensen's node, primitive streak, and gut endoderm. The remainder of the definitive embryo (i.e., parts of epidermal origin, including ectodermal placodes) derives from squamous ectoderm (surrounding the medullary plate) of the blastocyst's ill-named trophoblastic area. Amniotic ectoderm develops farther distally within the trophoblastic area. The autapomorphic inner cell mass (ICM) of placental mammals is homologous to medullary plate of the marsupial blastocyst plus morphologically undefined, proximal parts of surrounding ectoderm (of the trophoblastic area). Considerations of early cell lineages in marsupials are greatly affected by recognition that the boundary between future embryonic and extra-embryonic tissues does not match the margin of the medullary plate (i.e., embryonic area). Marsupials and monotremes largely conform to sauropsid early embryogenesis, but placentals express, at earliest developmental stages, innovations unique within Amniota that are linked to early establishment of the brain. Neonatal marsupials and hatchling monotremes are extremely altricial and closely comparable anatomically/physiologically; they share a temporal pattern in combining early morphogenesis of craniofacial features (related to suckling) with deferral of telencephalic completion into postnatal/posthatching life. Placentals contrast greatly in establishing the central nervous system prior to rudiments of the cranial skeleton and associated musculature, and they complete essentials of forebrain development before birth. Comparative evidence from transitory periderm suggests that primordial eutherians had extremely altricial hatchlings or newborns, whichever was the mode of early development. Details remain unknown about the origin of the unique specialization of ICM plus encapsulating trophoblast from the more generalized blastula of ancestral synapsids.  相似文献

The paper characterizes Darwin's theory, providing a synthesis of recent historical investigations in this area. Darwin's reading of Malthus led him to appreciate the importance of population pressures, and subsequently of natural selection, with the help of the wedge metaphor. But, in itself, natural selection did not furnish an adequate account of the origin of species, for which a principle of divergence was needed. Initially, Darwin attributed this to geographical isolation, but later, following his work on barnacles which underscored the significance of variation, and arising from his work on botanical arithmetic, he supposed that diversity allowed more places to be occupied in a given region. So isolation was not regarded as essential. Large regions with intense competition, and with ample variation spread by blending, would facilitate speciation. The notion of place was different from niche, and it is questioned whether Darwin's views on ecology were as modern as is commonly supposed. Two notions of struggle are found in Darwin's theory; and three notions of variation. Criticisms of his theory led him to emphasize the importance of variation over a range of forms. Hence the theory was populational rather than typological. The theory required a Lamarckian notion of inheritable changes initiated by the environment as a source of variation. Also, Darwin deployed a use/habit theory; and the notion of sexual selection. Selection normally acted at the level of the individual, though kin selection was possible. Group selection was hinted at for man. Darwin's thinking (and also the exposition of his theory) was generally guided by the domestic-organism analogy, which satisfied his methodological requirement of a vera causa principle.  相似文献

A contextualizing image (CI) is a powerful central image of a dream which appears to contextualize (provide a picture-context for) the dreamer's emotion. For instance, dreamers who have experienced any serious traumatic event sometimes dream, I was overwhelmed by a tidal wave. This appears to picture their feeling of terror and/or vulnerability.A scoring system for CIs is examined here and is applied to dreams and daydreams supplied by 40 students. Two raters scoring dreams on a blind basis showed good inter-rater reliability. Recent dreams were shown to have more as well as more intense CIs than recent daydreams; likewise, dreams that stand out had more intense CIs than daydreams that stand out. Students with thin boundaries had more and more intense CIs than students with thick boundaries in their recent dreams and nightmare, but not so clearly in dreams and nightmares that stand out. The emotions judged as contextualized by the powerful images tended towards fear/terror and helplessness/vulnerability in dreams (especially in dreams that stand out) whereas emotions contextualized by images in daydreams showed a wide range with no clusters.  相似文献

All models of self-motion from optical flow assume the instantaneous velocity field as input. We tested this assumption for human observers using random-dot displays that simulated translational and circular paths of movement by manipulating the lifetime and displacement of individual dots. For translational movement, observers were equally accurate in judging direction of heading from a velocity field with a two-frame dot life and a direction field in which the magnitudes of displacement were randomized while the radial pattern of directions was preserved, but at chance with a speed field in which the directions were randomized, preserving only magnitude. Accuracy declined with increasing noise in vector directions, but remained below 2.6° with a 90° noise envelope. Thus, the visual system uses the radial morphology of vector directions to determine translational heading and can tolerate large amounts of noise in this pattern. For circular movement, observers were equally accurate with a 2-frame velocity field, 3-frame acceleration displays, and 2-frame and 3-frame direction fields, consistent with the use of the pattern of vector directions to locate the center of rotation. The results indicate that successive independent velocity fields are sufficient for perception of translational and circular heading.  相似文献

Summary The slow reassociating fraction of mouse DNA (unique DNA), when allowed to reassociate in 0.14 m sodium phosphate buffer at 50 °C showed a biphasic melting curve with a transition at 78–80 °C. On the basis of this feature, the slow reassociating DNA was separated preparatively into two fractions: unique DNA I and II. Their duplexes showed differences with respect to thermal stability, S1 nuclease resistance and rate of reassociation. About one third of the sequences in each fraction were fraction-specific. The conclusion was drawn that for unique DNA I these should be the low repetitive or single copy related sequences (multigene families) and for unique DNA II—the unrelated single copy sequences or recent families of low repetitive not yet diverged sequences.  相似文献

Interleukin 2-dependent alloreactive cytotoxic T cell lines, with activity predominantly directed against the HLA-A2 antigen, have been generated in vitro by stimulating blood mononuclear cells from donors nonimmune to the Epstein-Barr (EB) virus with appropriate numbers of EB virus-transformed B cells from A2-homozygous individuals. Such effector cells were tested against a panel of EB virus-transformed target cell lines all expressing the serologically defined A2 antigen but typed into common A2 and variant A2 subgroups on the basis of their recognition by A2-restricted EB virus-specific cytotoxic T cells. Variant A2 responder cells cocultivated with common A2-bearing stimulators gave rise to effector T cell lines which recognized only the common A2-bearing subgroup of targets. By contrast, responder cells from A2-negative donors stimulated with common A2-bearing cells produced effector T cell lines in which the strong lysis of common A2-bearing targets was accompanied by a lower, but still significant, lysis directed against all targets within the variant A2 subgroup. In both cases, lysis of the target cells was blocked equally well by the anti-A2-specific monoclonal antibody MA2.1 as by the monoclonal antibody W6/32 specific for HLA-A, -B, and -C determinants. This suggests that HLA-A2 molecules possess at least two distinct sets of epitopes capable of inducing alloreactive T cell cytotoxicity: first, epitopes probably associated with T cell-restricting sites, which generate subgroup-specific responses, and second, epitopes shared by all A2 molecules, and perhaps associated with serologically defined sites, which generate pan A2 group-specific responses.Abbreviations used in this paper EB Epstein-Barr - IL-2 Interleukin 2 - UM unfractionated mononuclear - AET aminoethylisothiouroniumbromide hydrobromide  相似文献

Myelin from adult rat brains was separated on a discontinuous sucrose gradient into three subfractions. Analysis of light, heavy and membrane fraction lipid classes was performed by HPTLC and densitometry while fatty acid composition was determinated by GLC. The more interesting results observed are: i) the membrane fraction resembles in its lipid and fatty acid composition other cell membranes (particulary oligodentrocytes); ii) light and heavy myelin are quite similar between them but the former has a higher content of sphingomyelin, a lower hydroxy/nohhydroxy cerebrosides ratio and a lower content of monoenoic fatty acids than the heavy subfraction. The results obtained could explain the different structures observed in each myelin subfraction since fatty acid composition, hydroxy fatty acids, sphingomyelin and cholesterol play a key role in the stability and structure of membranes.  相似文献

A structural component of mitotic chromosomes that partially explains the compaction of DNA within mitotic chromosomes is suggested on the basis of the occurrence of long, regular cylindrical structures in preparations of isolated human chromosomes. These structures, unit fibers, of a rather constant diameter of about 4,000 Å have been postulated to be formed by coiling of the 250T2–300 Å solenoid chromatin fiber that itself is formed by coiling of the 100 Å string of nucleosome fiber. The human chromatid would thus be composed by a hierarchy of helices with contraction ratios for DNA at each level of coiling of 7 (string of nucleosomes), 5 (solenoid) and 40 (4,000 Å unit fiber or super-solenoid) which results in an overall contraction ratio for DNA in the unit fiber structures of about 1,400, which is approximately 5-fold less than the final contraction of DNA in intact chromatids of condensed metaphase chromosomes. The present report concerns more detailed studies with respect to the dimensions and cytochemical properties of the unit fiber structures observed in preparations of isolated human mitotic chromosomes that provide direct and indirect evidence in support of their super-solenoid structure and relate to known properties of human mitotic chromosomes.  相似文献

Electrolyte leakage was measured in hardened and nonhardened leaves of three potato species, Solanum tuberosum L., S. acaule Bitt. and S. commersonii Dun., and one interspecific cross, Alaska Frostless (S. acaule x S. tuberosum) when exposed to various subzero temperatures. The leaves were undercooled (no ice present) from 0°C to -12.5°C for 45 min and to-4°C for up to 10 d. Regardless of the degree of undercooling no injury was observed in any of the potatoes, hardened or nonhardened, for up to 12 h. After 5 d, however, electrolyte leakage was observed in hardened S. tuberosum, S. acaule and S. commersonii, and in nonhardened Alaska Frostless. After 10 d exposure all potatoes, hardened and nonhardened, showed a significant amount of electrolyte leakage as compared to their controls kept at 0°C for 10 d.Scientific Journal Series Paper No. 13842 of the Minnesota Agricultural Experiment Station, St. Paul, Minn  相似文献

Researchers identify nerves as an idiom of distress, an illness category, a metaphorical device capable of communicating social distress, and a technique for impression management. Much of the literature, however, links nerves to women. In this paper, I address two aspects of the phenomenon which have received limited attention. First, I discuss nerves within the context of Sicilian-Canadian conceptions of anatomy and physiology. Sicilian-Canadians regard nerves as essential components of the human anatomy which, in some cases, may be linked to both physical and psychic distress. Second, I build on this discussion to examine how Sicilian-Canadian males make use of the nerves idiom. The implications of my work include the need to: (1) modify our definition of nerves to recognize formally that we are dealing with a dynamiccomplex consisting of multiple, variable, and ambiguousmeanings — meanings that enable people to confront or cope with a variety of situations; (2) direct greater attention to nerves as an idiom ofphysical distress; and, (3) examine further the role of physical nerves in the social construction of gender.Glossary of terms Battuti Tired or exhausted - Duluri Pain - Gruppata Knotted - Musculidda Little muscle (often used to describe a small lump caused by muscle damage) - Nierbu (s),nierbi (pl) Nerves (depending on the context, however, the term can take on a variety of meanings) - Nierbi abbattuti Tired or Exhausted nerves (e.g., muscles) - Nierbi agruppati Knotted nerves (e.g., muscles). - Nierbi ammollanu Nerves (e.g., muscles) become soft and lax - Nierbi cunsumati Worn or frayed nerve-tissue (e.g., muscles) - Nierbi ngravaccati Entangled nerves (e.g., muscles) - Nirbatura The arrangement or system of nerves (muscles, tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues) that extend throughout the body - Nirbusu This term can refer to either an emotional state or a folk illness involving a disruption of the nerves and other physiological processes (such as the circulation of the blood) - Nucidda ni lu saccu A small nut [trapped] in a sack. Chiropractic is the largest unorthodox health profession in the United States. It is licensed in all 50 states and its services covered by governmental and private health insurance. Yet chiropractic remains, in the opinion of medical commentators, an unscientific healing cult. Chiropractic holds that much illness is caused, directly or indirectly, by derangements in homeostasis that result from subtle vertebral malalignments called subluxations. Only a minority of straight chiropracters continue to provide spinal manipulation as their only treatment, while the majority mixers have embraced physical therapy, vitamin supplements and a wide variety of drugless symptomatic treaments Clinical trials suggest that spinal manipulation has short-term benefit in back pain, but the success of chiropractic is not fully explained by that effect. The clinical art, though, as manifested in the chiropractor-patient interaction contributes greatly to chiropractic healing. This process promotes patient acceptance and validation, fulfills expectations, provides explanations and engages the patient's commitment. The same process lies at the core of the art of medicine. Seeing the clinical art as it functions in chiropractic can help us to understand its independent power in medicine.  相似文献

On the basis of symposium contributions onChlorella, Hibbertia, Eucalyptus, Ambrosia and on numerical approaches some fundamental problems of (bio)systematics, evolution, and taxonomic categories are discussed: Methods available for analysing affinities; conflicting evidence from phenetic, biochemical, cytogenetic and other analyses; further classification problems in cases of intermediacy, etc. While sibs of various levels and their natural hierarchy often can be objectively defined, this appears impossible for particular taxonomic levels itself (e. g. species). A single objective taxonomic system of organisms is unrealistic. Certain guiding lines for relative and practicable concepts of species and genus are proposed.Presented at the symposium Speciation and the Species Concept during the XIIth International Botanical Congress, Leningrad, July 8, 1975.  相似文献

In this essay, I argue that a theory of meaning adequate to account for the effectiveness of symbolic healing and psychotherapy requires some variant of the three concepts of myth, metaphor and archetype. Myth stands for the overarching narrative structures of the self produced and lent authority by cultural tradition. Archetype stands not for preformed ideas or images, but for the bodily-given in meaning. Metaphor occupies an intermediate realm, linking narrative and bodily-given experience through imaginative constructions and enactments that allow movement in sensory-affective quality space. This pluralistic perspective itself constitutes a middle-ground between constructivist and realist approaches to meaning that can integrate causal and interpretive models of symbolic healing.I am manipulating, says the Alchemist. No, you are dreaming, says Novalis. I am dreaming, says Novalis. No, you are manipulating. The reason for such a profound duality is that fire is within us and outside us, invisible and dazzling, spirit and smoke.  相似文献

Biology cannot accommodate all aspects of culture. Aspects of culture that a biological approach can take into account can be covered by the biological categories of phenotype and environment. There is no need to treat culture as a separate category. Attempts to elaborate biological explanations of cultural variation will meet with success only if biologists expand theories of development, and integrate them in evolutionary biology. The alternative — elaborating the idea of so-called cultural inheritance — makes little sense from a biological point of view.  相似文献
