In the Mediterranean basin, precipitation is expected to decline as a consequence of climate change. The response of a Quercus ilex forest in southern France to such a decline in water availability was studied using a 4-year throughfall exclusion experiment. Seasonal courses of sap flow and leaf water potential were obtained from 2004 to 2007 and used to characterize tree water relations in a control and a dry treatment. The experiment reduced the average precipitation input to the soil by 29%, and resulted in a 23% reduction in annual transpiration. Soil water potential was significantly lower in the dry treatment only during summer drought, but transpiration was reduced all year round even during well-watered periods. Despite a tight stomatal control over transpiration, whole-tree hydraulic conductance was found to be lower in the trees growing in the driest conditions. This reduction in water transport capacity was observed jointly with a reduction in leaf transpiring area. Canopy leaf area decreased by 18% in the dry treatment as a consequence of the throughfall exclusion, which was found to validate the ecohydrological equilibrium theory. 相似文献

The effect of an extended drought (from 1992 to 1995) on water relations was assessed on evergreen oak (Quercus ilex L.) in a dehesa ecosystem (Seville, Southern Spain). Diurnal and seasonal transpiration patterns were analysed at leaf (porometry) and whole-tree level (sap flow), focusing on the relationship between tree transpiration rates (Et) and potential evapotranspiration rates (PET). Daily maximum Et varied over the year, becoming higher between May and August, and lower between November and April. Annual Et (169 – 205 mm y–1) accounted for less than 40 % of annual rainfall. The prolonged drought did not affect the water relations of the Q. ilex, mainly due to strong stomatal regulation avoiding the loss of water. Stomatal control was found in all seasons, although it was stronger in summer. This behaviour leads to low water consumption and low Et/PET ratios throughout the year (0.05 to 0.27). 相似文献

Two Italian CO2 springs allowed us to study the long-term effect of a 350–2600 μ mol mol–1 increase in CO2 concentrations on the surface structures of leaves of Quercus ilex L. Carbon dioxide increased the quantity of cuticular waxes, above an apparent threshold of 750 μ mol mol–1 CO2 . Leaf wettability was not modified by CO2 concentrations. Reduction in stomatal frequency was observable up to 750 μ mol mol–1 CO2 , the slope being almost the same as that estimated for the increase in CO2 concentration from pre-industrial times to the present. At higher concentrations, CO2 seemed to exert no more impact on stomatal frequency. 相似文献

Ericoid mycorrhizal fungi are common root associates of a Mediterranean ectomycorrhizal plant (Quercus ilex) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mycorrhiza samples of neighbouring Quercus ilex and Erica arborea plants collected in a postcutting habitat were processed to see whether plants differing in mycorrhizal status harbour the same root endophytes. Three experiments were performed in parallel: (i) isolation, identification and molecular characterization of fungi from surface-sterilized roots of both plant species; (ii) re-inoculation of fungal isolates on axenic E. arborea and Q. ilex seedlings; (iii) direct inoculation of field-collected Q. ilex ectomycorrhizas onto E. arborea seedlings. About 70 and 150 fungal isolates were obtained from roots of Q. ilex and E. arborea, respectively. Among them, Oidiodendron species and five cultural morphotypes of sterile isolates formed typical ericoid mycorrhizas on E. arborea in vitro. Fungi with such mycorrhizal ability were derived from both host plants. Isolates belonging to one of these morphotypes (sd9) also exhibited an unusual pattern of colonization, with an additional extracellular hyphal net. Ericoid mycorrhizas were also readily obtained by direct inoculation of E. arborea seedlings with Q. ilex ectomycorrhizal tips. Polymerase chain-restriction fragment length polymorphism and random amplified polymorphic DNA analyses of the shared sterile morphotypes demonstrate, in the case of sd9, the occurrence of the same genet on the two host plants. These results indicate that ericoid mycorrhizal fungi associate with ectomycorrhizal roots, and the ecological significance of this finding is discussed. 相似文献

We present 9 years of eddy covariance measurements made over an evergreen Mediterranean forest in southern France. The goal of this study was to quantify the different components of the carbon (C) cycle, gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (Reco), and to assess the effects of climatic variables on these fluxes and on the net ecosystem exchange of carbon dioxide. The Puéchabon forest acted as a net C sink of ?254 g C m?2 yr?1, with a GPP of 1275 g C m?2 yr?1 and a Reco of 1021 g C m?2 yr?1. On average, 83% of the net annual C sink occurred between March and June. The effects of exceptional events such the insect‐induced partial canopy defoliation that occurred in spring 2005, and the spring droughts of 2005 and 2006 are discussed. A high interannual variability of ecosystem C fluxes during summer and autumn was observed but the resulting effect on the annual net C budget was moderate. Increased severity and/or duration of summer drought under climate change do not appear to have the potential to negatively impact the average C budget of this ecosystem. On the contrary, factors affecting ecosystem functioning (drought and/or defoliation) during March–June period may reduce dramatically the annual C balance of evergreen Mediterranean forests. 相似文献

Naturally grown trees of Mediterranean evergreen oak (Quercus ilex L.), representing the climax species of the region, were enclosed in six large open-top chambers and exposed to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations during a 3 year period. Maximum daily net photosynthetic rates measured at the two different CO2 concentrations were from 30 to 100% higher in elevated than in ambient [CO2] throughout the experimental period. The increase in maximum daily photosynthesis was also accompanied by a 93% rise in the apparent quantum yield of CO2 assimilation, measured during periods of optimum soil moisture conditions. Hence, no clear evidence of down-regulation of net photosynthetic activity was found. Interactions between atmospheric CO2 concentration and plant water stress were studied by following the natural evolution of drought in different seasons and years. At each level of water stress, the maximum rate of carbon assimilation was higher in elevated than in ambient [CO2] by up to 100%. Analysis of in vivo chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in normal (21%) and low (2%) oxygen concentrations provided useful insights into the functioning and stability of the photosynthetic processes. The photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) progressively decreased as drought conditions became more evident; this trend was accentuated under elevated [CO2]. Thermal de-excitation processes were possibly more significant under elevated than under ambient [CO2], in a combination of environmental stresses. This research suggests two possible conclusions: (i) a ‘positive’ interaction between elevated [CO2] and carbon metabolism can be obtained through relief of water stress limitation in the summer months, and (ii) elevated [CO2], under drought conditions, may also enhance the significance of slow-relaxing quenching. 相似文献

Stomatal density (SD) and stomatal conductance ( g s ) can be affected by an increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration. This study was conducted on 17 species growing in a naturally enriched CO2 spring and belonging to three plant communities. Stomatal conductance, stomatal density and stomatal index (SI) of plants from the spring, which were assumed to have been exposed for generations to elevated [CO2 ], and of plants of the same species collected in a nearby control site, were compared. Stomatal conductance was significantly lower in most of the species collected in the CO2 spring and this indicated that CO2 effects on g s are not of a transitory nature but persist in the long term and through plant generations. Such a decrease was, however, not associated with changes in the anatomy of leaves: SD was unaffected in the majority of species (the decrease was only significant in three out of the 17 species examined), and also SI values did not vary between the two sites with the exception of two species that showed increased SI in plants grown in the CO2 -enriched area. These results did not support the hypothesis that long-term exposure to elevated [CO2 ] may cause adaptive modification in stomatal number and in their distribution. 相似文献

We analysed the ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungal diversity in a Mediterranean old-growth Quercus ilex forest stand from Corsica (France), where Arbutus unedo was the only other ECM host. On a 6400 m2 stand, we investigated whether oak age and host species shaped below-ground ECM diversity. Ectomycorrhizas were collected under Q. ilex individuals of various ages (1 yr seedlings; 3-10 yr saplings; old trees) and A. unedo. They were typed by ITS-RFLP analysis and identified by match to RFLP patterns of fruitbodies, or by sequencing. A diversity of 140 taxa was found among 558 ectomycorrhizas, with many rare taxa. Cenococcum geophilum dominated (35% of ECMs), as well as Russulaceae, Cortinariaceae and Thelephoraceae. Fungal species richness was comparable above and below ground, but the two levels exhibited < 20% overlap in fungal species composition. Quercus ilex age did not strongly shape ECM diversity. The two ECM hosts, A. unedo and Q. ilex, tended to share few ECM species (< 15% of the ECM diversity). Implications for oak forest dynamics are discussed. 相似文献

Monoterpene emission and monoterpene synthase activities in the Mediterranean evergreen oak Quercus ilex L. grown at elevated CO2 concentrations 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4

Monoterpene emissions, monoterpene synthase activities, photosynthesis, fluorescence yield in the dark and drought stress indicators (stomatal conductance and mid‐day water potential) were concurrently measured under similar temperature and illumination in current‐year leaves of Quercus ilex L. of plants grown in open‐top chambers at ambient (350 ppm) and elevated (700 ppm) CO2. The study was undertaken to understand the effect of CO2 on monoterpene biosynthesis, and to predict and parameterize the biogenic emissions at growing CO2 concentrations. The results of the 1998 and 1999 studies show that at elevated CO2, and in the absence of persistent environmental stresses, photosynthesis was stimulated with respect to ambient CO2, but that the emission of the three most abundantly emitted monoterpenes (α‐pinene, sabinene and β‐pinene) was inhibited by approximately 68%. The enzyme activities of the monoterpene synthases catalysing the formation of the three monoterpenes were also inhibited at elevated CO2 and an excellent relationship was found between monoterpene emission and activity of the corresponding enzyme both at ambient and elevated CO2. Interestingly, however, limonene emission was enhanced in conditions of elevated CO2 as it was also the corresponding synthase. The ratio between enzyme activity and emission of the three main monoterpenes was high (above 20) at ambient CO2 but it was below 10 at elevated CO2 and, for limonene, on both treatments. Our results indicate that the overall emission of monoterpenes at elevated CO2 will be inhibited because of a concurrent, strong down‐regulation of monoterpene synthase activities. When the enzyme activity does not change, as for limonene, the high photosynthetic carbon availability at elevated CO2 conditions may even stimulate emission. The results of the 1997 study show that severe and persistent drought, as commonly occurs in the Mediterranean, may inhibit both photosynthesis and monoterpene (α‐pinene) emission, particularly at ambient CO2. Thus, emission is probably limited by photosynthetic carbon availability; the effect of elevated CO2per se is not apparent if drought, and perhaps other environmental stresses, are also present. 相似文献

Photosynthetic limitations in response to water stress and recovery in Mediterranean plants with different growth forms 总被引:9,自引:1,他引:9
* Whether photosynthesis is limited during water stress and recovery because of diffusive or biochemical factors is still open to debate, and apparent contradictions appear when various studies on species with different growth forms are compared. * Ten Mediterranean species, representing different growth forms, were subjected to different levels of water stress, the most severe followed by rewatering. A quantitative limitation analysis was applied to estimate the effects of water stress on stomatal (S(L)), mesophyll conductance (MC(L)) and biochemical limitations (B(L)). * Results confirmed a general pattern of photosynthetic response to water stress among C(3) plants when stomatal conductance (g(s)) is used as a reference parameter. As g(s) values decreased from a maximum to approx. 0.05 mol H(2)O m(-2) s(-1), the total photosynthetic limitation rose from 0 to approx. 70%, and this was caused by a progressive increase of both S(L) and MC(L) limitations, while B(L) remained negligible. When lower values of g(s) were achieved (total photosynthetic limitation increased from 70 to 100%), the contribution of S(L) declined, while MC(L) still increased and B(L) contributed significantly (20-50%) to the total limitation. * Photosynthetic recovery of severely stressed plants after rewatering showed a dominant role of MC(L), irrespective of the degree of photosynthesis recovery. 相似文献

Different vulnerabilities of Quercus ilex L. to freeze- and summer drought-induced xylem embolism: an ecological interpretation 总被引:5,自引:3,他引:5
Quercus ilex L. growing in the southern Mediterranean Basin region is exposed to xylem embolism induced by both winter freezing and summer drought. The distribution of the species in Sicily could be explained in terms of the different vulnerability to embolism of its xylem conduits. Naturally occurring climatic conditions were simulated by: (1) maintaining plants for 3h at ambient temperatures of 0, -1.5, -2.5, -5.0 and -11°C; and (2) allowing plants to dry out to ratios of their minimum diurnal leaf water potentials (Ψ1) to that at the turgor loss point (Ψtlp) of 0.6, 0.9, 1.05, 1.20 and 1.33. The loss of hydraulic conductivity of one-year-old twigs reached 40% at -1.5°C and at Ψ1/ΨtlP= 1.05. Recovery from these strains was almost complete 24 h after the release of thermal stress or after one irrigation, respectively. More severe stresses reduced recovery consistently. The percentages of xylem conduits embolized following application of the two stresses, were positively related to xylem conduit diameter. The capability of the xylem conduits to recover from stress was positively related to the conduit diameter in plants subjected to summer drought, but not in the plants subjected to winter freezing stress. The ecological significance of the different vulnerabilities to embolism of xylem conduits under naturally occurring climatic conditions is discussed. 相似文献

The sclerophyllous forests of Quercus ilex (holm oak) possess a unique position in earth’s biosphere, existing only in countries of the Mediterranean basin. However, very little information exists about mushrooms associated with holm oak in east Mediterranean, including Greece, where Q. ilex appears mostly in relict forests and fragmented stands. A pertinent long-term investigation was undertaken in selected Q. ilex dominated habitats of Crete, Andros, Naxos and Ikaria islands (Aegean Archipelago) as well as in mountains of Attica. Specimens of xylotrophic basidiomycetes were collected and identified. As a result, 74 species were recorded; among them Hemimycena cephalotricha, Hyphoderma cremeoalbum, Hyphodontia radula, Irpex litschaueri, Mycena algeriensis, Phanerochaete martelliana, Phloeomana alba and Phlebia unica constitute new records for the Greek mycobiota, while 68 species are reported for the first time on Q. ilex in Greece. Moreover, the presence of Fomitiporia mediterranea on this host was evidenced through ITS sequencing, and comments are made about its relationship to F. punctata and F. pseudopunctata. The importance of findings is discussed in conjunction with their environmental value; five species could be assigned in the “Species of Special Interest” categories, and other five polypores are proposed as suitable indicators for Q. ilex habitat assessment and conservation. 相似文献

Drought controls over conductance and assimilation of a Mediterranean evergreen ecosystem: scaling from leaf to canopy 总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7

Drought control over conductance and assimilation was assessed using eddy flux and meteorological data monitored during four summer periods from 1998 to 2001 above a closed canopy of the Mediterranean evergreen oak tree Quercus ilex. Additional discrete measurements of soil water content and predawn leaf water potential were used to characterize the severity of the drought. Canopy conductance was estimated through the big‐leaf approach of Penman–Monteith by inverting latent heat fluxes. The gross primary production ( GPP ) was estimated by adding ecosystem respiration to net ecosystem exchange. Ecosystem respiration was deduced from night flux when friction velocity ( u *) was greater than 0.35 m s?1. Empirical equations were identified that related maximal canopy conductance and daily ecosystem GPP to relative soil water content ( RWC) , the ratio of current soil water content to the field capacity, and to the predawn leaf water potential. Both variables showed a strong decline with soil RWC for values lower than 0.7. The sharpest decline was observed for GPP . The curves reached zero for RWC =0.41 and 0.45 for conductance and GPP , respectively. When the predawn leaf water potential was used as a surrogate for soil water potential, both variables showed a hyperbolic decline with decreasing water potential. These results were compared with already published literature values obtained at leaf level from the same tree species. Scaling up from the leaf to ecosystem highlighted the limitation of two big‐leaf representations: Penman–Monteith and Sellers' Π factor. Neither held completely for comparing leaf and canopy fluxes. Tower measurements integrate fluxes from foliage elements clumped at several levels of organization: branch, tree, and ecosystem. The Q. ilex canopy exhibited non‐random distribution of foliage, emphasizing the need to take into account a clumping index, the factor necessary to apply the Lambert–Beer law to natural forests. Our results showed that drought is an important determinant in water losses and CO2 fluxes in water‐limited ecosystems. In spite of the limitations inherent to the big‐leaf representation of the canopy, the equations are useful for predicting the influence of environmental factors in Mediterranean woodlands and for interpreting ecosystem exchange measurements. 相似文献

Effects of carbon dioxide concentration on the interactive effects of temperature and water vapour on stomatal conductance in soybean 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Soybeans were grown at three CO2 concentrations in outdoor growth chambers and at two concentrations in controlled-environment growth chambers to investigate the interactive effects of CO2, temperature and leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (LAVPD) on stomatal conductance. The decline in stomatal conductance with CO2 was a function of both leaf temperature and LAVPD. In the field measurements, stomatal conductance was more sensitive to LAVPD at low CO2 at 30 °C but not at 35 °C. There was also a direct increase in conductance with temperature, which was greater at the two elevated carbon dioxide concentrations. Environmental growth chamber results showed that the relative stomatal sensitivity to LAVPD decreased with both leaf temperature and CO2. Measurements in the environmental growth chamber were also performed at the opposing CO2, and these experiments indicate that the stomatal sensitivity to LAVPD was determined more by growth CO2 than by measurement CO2. Two models that describe stomatal responses to LAVPD were compared with the outdoor data to evaluate whether these models described adequately the interactive effects of CO2, LAVPD and temperature. 相似文献

Geographical and seasonal influences on the distribution of fungal endophytes in Quercus ilex 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A systematic survey of the endophytic assemblages of Quercus ilex in central Spain has been performed, with the goal of evaluating the importance of geographical and seasonal factors on these fungal communities. Four sampling sites were selected; one of them was sampled twice, in the spring and the autumn. The collected plant material consisted of bark, twigs and leaves from eight trees per site. Fungal strains were isolated with the use of a surface-sterilization method with sodium hypochlorite. A total of 2921 fungal strains grouped into 149 'species' or morphological types were recovered. The 10 dominant species, with isolation frequencies >1.5%, were Pyrenochaeta sp., Periconiella anamorph of Biscogniauxia mediterranea (De Not.) Kuntze, Pseudonectria sp., Cryptosporiopsis quercina Petrak, Alternaria alternata (Fr:) Keissl., two undetermined coelomycetes, Penicillium funiculosum Thom, Diplodia mutila Fr. apud Mont. and Ascochyta sp. Medians of fungal species per tree were significantly different among the sampled sites. The isolation frequencies of the dominant species, as well as other less frequent species, were significantly dependent on the sampling site. The degree of endophytic infection and the diversity of fungal species were significantly higher in the spring. The frequencies of all dominant species at one of the sites depended significantly on the season, except for C. quercina , Acremonium sclerotigenum (F & V Moreau ex Valenta) Gams. and D. mutila . Cluster analysis of the whole endophytic mycoflora of the sampled trees suggested that the geographical factor affects the endophytic distribution patterns more significantly than the seasonal factor. 相似文献

Measuring and modelling carbon dioxide and water vapour exchange over a temperate broad-leaved forest during the 1995 summer drought 总被引:7,自引:1,他引:7
D. BALDOCCHI 《Plant, cell & environment》1997,20(9):1108-1122
Forests in the south-eastern United States experienced a prolonged dry spell and above-normal temperatures during the 1995 growing season. During this episode, nearly continuous, eddy covariance measurements of carbon dioxide and water vapour fluxes were acquired over a temperate, hardwood forest. These data are used to examine how environmental factors and accumulating soil moisture deficits affected the diurnal pattern and magnitude of canopy-scale carbon dioxide and water vapour fluxes. The field data are also used to test an integrative leaf-to-canopy scaling model (CANOAK), which uses micrometeorological and physiological theory, to calculate mass and energy fluxes. When soil moisture was ample in the spring, peak rates of net ecosystem CO2 exchange (NF) occurred around midday and exceeded 20 μmol m?2 s?1. Rates of NK were near optimal when air temperature ranged between 22 and 25°C. The accumulation of soil moisture deficits and a co-occurrence of high temperatures caused peak rates of daytime carbon dioxide uptake to occur earlier in the morning. High air temperatures and soil moisture deficits were also correlated with a dramatic reduction in the magnitude of NE. On average, the magnitude of NE decreased from 20 to 7 μmol m?2 s?1 as air temperature increased from 24 to 30°C and the soil dried. The CANAOK model yielded accurate estimates of canopy-scale carbon dioxide and water vapour fluxes when the forest had an ample supply of soil moisture. During the drought and heat spell, a cumulative drought index was needed to adjust the proportionality constant of the stomatal conductance model to yield accurate estimates of canopy CO2 exchange. The adoption of the drought index also enabled the CANOAK model to give improved estimates of evaporation until midday. On the other hand, the scheme failed to yield accurate estimates of evaporation during the afternoon. 相似文献

While photosynthetic responses of C3 plants to elevated CO2 are fairly well documented, whole-plant water use under such conditions has been less intensively studied. Woody species,
in particular, have exhibited highly variable stomatal responses to high CO2 as determined by leaf-level measurements. In this study, sap flux of Pinus taeda L. saplings was periodically monitored during the 4th year of an open-top chamber CO2 fumigation experiment. Water use per unit sapwood area did not differ between treatments. Furthermore, the ratio of leaf
area to sapwood area did not change under high CO2, so that average canopy stomatal conductance (on a unit leaf area basis) remained unaffected by the CO2 treatment. Thus, the only effect of high CO2 was to increase whole-plant water use by increasing sapling leaf area and associated conducting sapwood area. Such an effect
may not directly translate to forest-level responses as the feedback effects of higher leaf area at the canopy scale cannot
be incorporated in a chamber study. These feedbacks include the potential effect of higher leaf area index on rainfall and
light interception, both of which may reduce average stomatal conductance in intact forest canopies.
