Insects use chemosensory cues to feed and mate. In Drosophila, the effect of pheromones has been extensively investigated in adults, but rarely in larvae. The colonization of natural food sources by Drosophila buzzatii and Drosophila simulans species may depend on species-specific chemical cues left in the food by larvae and adults. We identified such chemicals in both species and measured their influence on larval food preference and puparation behaviour. We also tested compounds that varied between these species: (i) two larval volatile compounds: hydroxy-3-butanone-2 and phenol (predominant in D. simulans and D. buzzatii, respectively), and (ii) adult cuticular hydrocarbons (CHs). Drosophila buzzatii larvae were rapidly attracted to non-CH adult conspecific cues, whereas D. simulans larvae were strongly repulsed by CHs of the two species and also by phenol. Larval cues from both species generally reduced larval attraction and pupariation on food, which was generally—but not always—low, and rarely reflected larval response. As these larval and adult pheromones specifically influence larval food search and the choice of a pupariation site, they may greatly affect the dispersion and survival of Drosophila species in nature.  相似文献

An important question in contemporary sensory neuroscience is how animals perceive their environment and make appropriate behavioral choices based on chemical perceptions. The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster exhibits robust tastant and odor-evoked behaviors. Understanding how the gustatory and olfactory systems support the perception of these contact and volatile chemicals and translate them into appropriate attraction or avoidance behaviors has made an unprecedented contribution to our knowledge of the organization of chemosensory systems. In this review, I begin by describing the receptors and signaling mechanisms of the Drosophila gustatory and olfactory systems and then highlight their involvement in the control of simple and complex behaviors. The topics addressed include feeding behavior, learning and memory, navigation behavior, neuropeptide modulation of chemosensory behavior, and I conclude with a discussion of recent work that provides insight into pheromone signaling pathways.  相似文献

Muscodor albus MOW12, an endophytic fungus isolated from Piper nigrum in Mawlong, Meghalaya, India, resembles some cultural and hyphal characteristics of previous isolates of Muscodor sp. In addition, it possesses about 99 % similarity in its ITS rDNA with other M. albus isolates and thus is nicely centered within the genetic tree to other Muscodor spp. This xylariaceae fungus effectively inhibits and kills certain plant pathogenic fungi by virtue of a mixture of volatile compounds that it produces. The majority of these compounds were identified by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry as small molecular weight esters, alcohols, and acids. The main ester components of this isolate of M. albus in its volatile mixture are acetic acid, ethyl ester; propanoic acid, 2-methyl-, methyl ester and acetic acid, 2-methylpropyl ester. This appears to be the first report of any M. albus strain from India.  相似文献

Background and Aims The first documented observation of pollination in Pleurothallidinae was that of Endrés, who noticed that the ‘viscid sepals’ of Specklinia endotrachys were visited by a ‘small fly’. Chase would later identify the visiting flies as being members of the genus Drosophila. This study documents and describes how species of the S. endotrachys complex are pollinated by different Drosophila species. Methods Specimens of Specklinia and Drosophila were collected in the field in Costa Rica and preserved in the JBL and L herbaria. Flies were photographed, filmed and observed for several days during a 2-year period and were identified by a combination of non-invasive DNA barcoding and anatomical surveys. Tissue samples of the sepals, petals and labellum of Specklinia species were observed and documented by SEM, LM and TEM. Electroantennogram experiments were carried out on Drosophila hydei using the known aggregation pheromones ethyl tiglate, methyl tiglate and isopropyl tiglate. Floral compounds were analysed by gas chromatography–mass spectometry using those same pheromones as standards.Key Results Flowers of S. endotrachys, S. pfavii, S. remotiflora and S. spectabilis are visited and pollinated by several different but closely related Drosophila species. The flies are arrested by aggregation pheromones, including ethyl tiglate, methyl tiglate and isopropyl tiglate, released by the flowers, and to which at least D. hydei is very sensitive. Visible nectar drops on the adaxial surface of sepals are secreted by nectar-secreting stomata, encouraging male and female Drosophila to linger on the flowers for several hours at a time. The flies frequently show courtship behaviour, occasionally copulating. Several different Drosophila species can be found on a single Specklinia species. Conclusions Species of the S. endotrachys group share a similar pollination syndrome. There seem to be no species-specific relationships between the orchids and the flies. It is not expected that Specklinia species will hybridize naturally as their populations do not overlap geographically. The combination of pheromone attraction and nectar feeding is likely to be a generalized pollination syndrome in Pleurothallidinae.  相似文献

Sea-level rise and frequent intense hurricanes associated with climate change will result in recurrent flooding of inland systems such as Gulf Coastal pitcher plant bogs by storm surges. These surges can transport salt water and sediment to freshwater bogs, greatly affecting their biological integrity. Purple pitcher plants (Sarracenia rosea) are Gulf Coast pitcher plant bog inhabitants that could be at a disadvantage under this scenario because their pitcher morphology may leave them prone to collection of saline water and sediment after a surge. We investigated the effects of storm surge water salinity and sediment type on S. rosea vitality, plant community structure, and bog soil-water conductivity. Plots (containing ≥1 ramet of S. rosea) were experimentally flooded with fresh or saline water crossed with one of three sediment types (local, foreign, or no sediment). There were no treatment effects on soil-water conductivity; nevertheless, direct exposure to saline water resulted in significantly lower S. rosea cover until the following season when a prescribed fire and regional drought contributed to the decline of all the S. rosea to near zero percent cover. There were also significant differences in plant community structure between treatments over time, reflecting how numerous species increased in abundance and a few species decreased in abundance. However, in contrast to S. rosea, most of the other species in the community appeared resilient to the effects of storm surge. Thus, although the community may be somewhat affected by storm surge, those few species that are particularly sensitive to the storm surge disturbance will likely drop out of the community and be replaced by more resilient species. Depending on the longevity of these biological legacies, Gulf Coastal pitcher plant bogs may be incapable of fully recovering if they become exposed to storm surge more frequently due to climate change.  相似文献

Four species belonging to the genus Euplotes have been investigated, namely: E. lynni nov. spec., E. indica nov. spec., E. aediculatus, and E. woodruffi. All populations are from India and were investigated using morphological and molecular markers. The phylogenetic relationships were inferred from small subunit ribosomal rRNA gene (SSU rRNA), internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, and mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. Predicted secondary structure models for two new species using the hypervariable region of the SSU rRNA gene and ITS2 region support the distinctness of both species. Morphological characters were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA) and genetic variations were studied in-depth to analyze the relatedness of the two new species with their congeners. An integrative approach combining morphological features, molecular analysis, and ecological characteristics was carried out to understand the phylogenetic position of the reported species within the different clades of the genus Euplotes.  相似文献

The search for mates and food is mediated by volatile chemicals. Insects sense food odorants and sex pheromones through odorant receptors (ORs) and pheromone receptors (PRs), which are expressed in olfactory sensory neurons. Molecular phylogenetics of ORs, informed by behavioral and functional data, generates sound hypotheses for the identification of semiochemicals driving olfactory behavior. Studying orthologous receptors and their ligands across taxa affords insights into the role of chemical communication in reproductive isolation and phylogenetic divergence. The female sex pheromone of green budworm moth Hedya nubiferana (Lepidoptera, Totricidae) is a blend of two unsaturated acetates, only a blend of both elicits male attraction. Females produce in addition codlemone, which is the sex pheromone of another tortricid, codling moth Cydia pomonella. Codlemone also attracts green budworm moth males. Concomitantly, green budworm and codling moth males are attracted to the host plant volatile pear ester. A congruent behavioral response to the same pheromone and plant volatile in two tortricid species suggests co‐occurrence of dedicated olfactory channels. In codling moth, one PR is tuned to both compounds, the sex pheromone codlemone and the plant volatile pear ester. Our phylogenetic analysis finds that green budworm moth expresses an orthologous PR gene. Shared ancestry, and high levels of amino acid identity and sequence similarity, in codling and green budworm moth PRs offer an explanation for parallel attraction of both species to the same compounds. A conserved olfactory channel for a sex pheromone and a host plant volatile substantiates the alliance of social and habitat signals in insect chemical communication. Field attraction assays confirm that in silico investigations of ORs afford powerful predictions for an efficient identification of behavior‐modifying semiochemicals, for an improved understanding of the mechanisms of host plant attraction in insect herbivores and for the further development of sustainable insect control.  相似文献

The Dufour gland secretions of myrmica rubra, M. ruginodis, M. sabuleti and M. scabrinodis have been studied. The most volatile portions of the secretion of workers of all four species were found to be similar, containing C2C4 oxygenated compounds. The less volatile portion consists of a mixture of hydrocarbons. In M. ruginodis this is chiefly a mixture of linear saturated and mono-unsaturated hydrocarbons, similar in composition to that of M. rubra, while in M. sabuleti it consists of (Z,E)-α-farnesene and its homologues, homofarnesene, bishomofarnesene and trishomofarnesene, similar in composition to that of M. scabrinodis. Workers of each species studied were attracted to the Dufour gland volatiles of all four species, these substances chiefly causing an increase in running speed, with the workers not distinguishing between conspecific and allospecific secretions, though small quantitative differences could be demonstrated between the speed and orientation reaction of workers of each species. The less volatile fraction of the Dufour gland secretion is used for territorial marking by foraging workers. This marking is specific for each species except between M. rubra and M. ruginodis.  相似文献

Zaprionus indianus is a drosophilid native to the Afrotropical region that has colonized South America and exhibits a wide geographical distribution. In contrast, Z. sepsoides is restricted to certain African regions. The two species differ in the size of their testes, which are larger in Z. indianus than in Z. sepsoides. To better understand the biology and the degree of differentiation of these species, the current study evaluated spermatogenesis in males of different ages by conventional staining techniques and ultrastructural analysis. Spermatogenesis and the ultrastructure of spermatozoa were similar in the two species, and the diploid number was confirmed to be 2n = 12. A greater number of spermatozoa were observed in young Z. indianus (1–3 days old) compared to Z. sepsoides males, which showed a higher frequency of cells at the early stages of spermatogenesis. The head of the sperm was strongly marked by silver staining, lacto-acetic orcein and the Feulgen reaction; the P.A.S. reaction revealed glycogen granules in the testes of both species. Both species presented similar arrangement of microtubules (9+9+2), two mitochondrial derivatives of different size and 64 spermatozoa per bundle. Such similarity within the genus Zaprionus with other species of Drosophila, indicates that these structures are conserved in the family Drosophilidae. The differences observed the number and frequency of sperm cells in the early stages of spermatogenesis, between the young males of Z. indianus and Z. sepsoides, are features that may interfere with reproductive success and be related to the invasive potential of Z. indianus.  相似文献

Gene sequences can undergo accelerated nucleotide changes and rapid diversification. The rapid sequence changes can then potentially lead to phylogenetic incongruence. Recently, Bodilis et al. (2011) observed artificial phylogenetic incongruence using the Pseudomonas surface protein gene oprF, and hypothesized that it was the result of a long-branch attraction artifact ultimately caused by adaptive radiation. In this study, an alternative hypothesis, namely fine-scale recombination, was tested on the same dataset. The results reveal that regions in oprF are of different evolutionary origins, and the mosaic gene structure resulted in confounding phylogenetic signals. These findings demonstrate that unrecognized fine-scale recombination can confound the phylogenetic interpretation and emphasize the limitation of using whole genes as the unit of phylogenetic analysis.  相似文献

The nutritional potential of short-horned grasshopper, Chondacris rosea (Acrididae) and mole cricket, Brachytrupes orientalis (Gryllidae), two common species of Orthoptera used as food by tribal people of Arunachal Pradesh (NE India), was assessed. C rosea and B. orientalis contain 68.88 and 65.74% crude protein, 7.88 and 6.33% fat, 12.38 and 8.75% crude fiber, 4.16 and 4.33% ash, and 6.69% and 15.18% carbohydrate, respectively. The protein in both species is composed of 18 amino acids, including all of the essential ones, which except for methionine, satisfy (scores > 100) the recommended dose suggested by FAO/WHO/UNU. The predominant fatty acids in C. rosea were: palmitic, stearic, oleic, linolenic and linoleic acid viz. 17.2, 12.4, 21, 24.5 and 16.4%, respectively. In B. orientalis palmitic (50.3%) and stearic acids (32%) were dominating. Mineral content was generally higher than that of conventional meat types. B. orientalis fulfilled the RDA (88–109%) for Fe and both species fulfilled the RDA for Zn (70 to 108%) and Cu (> 100%). Based on 100 g of fresh insects the calorific values of C. rosea and B. orientalis were 373.24 and 380.65% kcal. We conclude that these insects can be recommended as a replacement of vertebrate animal food items as and when required.  相似文献

In this study the volatile components of four Inula species (Inula germanica L., I. bifrons (L.) L., I. ensifolia L., and I. salicina L.) were analysed by GC-FID/MS. A total of 141 chemical compounds were identified. A distinct volatile chemical profiles with high variation in the type of compounds was observed. Inula germanica was rich in oxygenated monoterpenes (54.7%), with cis-carvyl acetate (20.7%) and 1,8-cineole (14.6%) as main components. Sesquiterpenoids dominated in I. bifrons (60.3%), while the relatively high percentage of fatty acids characterized the other two species I. ensifolia and I. salicina (44.1 and 39.8%, respectively). Principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA) were used to investigate the variations in the volatiles of different Inula species.  相似文献

The two diastereoisomers, (2S,4R)-4-hydroxyglutamic acid and (2S,4S)-4-hydroxyglutamic acid, occur in characteristic concentration ratios in Phlox species. The second of these compounds is the principal free amino acid in the green parts of the plants. The presence of (2S,4R)-4-hydroxyglutamic acid in plants is reported for the first tiine. No other 4-substituted acidic amino acids were detected in the Phlox species analysed, although special attention was paid to the possible presence of 4-hydroxy-4-methylglutamic acids which have previously been reported in plants. It was found, however, that both diastereoisomers of (2S)-4-hydroxy-4-methylglutamic acid co-exist in Ledenbergia roseoaenea and also in Pandanus veitchii. Although the presence of 3,4-dihydroxyglutamic acids in green parts of Lepidium sativum and Rheum rhaponticum has been previously reported, we were not able to detect or isolate any of the possible diastereoisomers from the green parts or seeds of these plants. We did isolate glutathione which was found to have some properties in common with those reported for the dihydroxy compounds.  相似文献

Electroantennogram (EAG) responses to the aphid sex pheromone components, (1R,4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactol and (4aS,7S,7aR)-nepetalactone, and a plant volatile, (E)-2-hexenal, were investigated at three different positions (5/6th, 4/5th and 3/4th inter-segmental regions) along the antennae of four different morphs in two host-alternating aphid species, Aphis fabae Scopoli and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). Position-dependent and morph-specific EAG responses were elicited in both species. The nepetalactol and nepetalactone isomers elicited large EAG responses at all three recording positions in males of both species, such that primary rhinaria as well as secondary rhinaria appeared to respond. Asexual female morphs showed relatively smaller EAG responses to these compounds. The secondary rhinaria, which have been reported as sex pheromone receptors in males, were not very different in their number and distribution between gynoparae and alate virginoparae, but the gynoparae showed significantly larger EAG responses to nepetalactol and nepetalactone. The alate virginoparae showed EAG responses that were similar to those of apterous virginoparae, which lack secondary rhinaria. Taking the EAG response profiles together with the distribution of the secondary rhinaria, it is suggested that the function of secondary rhinaria differs between the morphs. Secondary rhinaria appear to detect sex pheromone components in males and gynoparae but not in the alate virginoparae. If they are functional in the latter morph, they are likely to play a role in detecting specific, but as yet unknown, volatile compounds. Some 30 plant volatiles were tested but none evoked an EAG response that could be allocated to the secondary rhinaria. In contrast to the very different EAG response profiles to the pheromone compounds between morphs, EAG responses to (E)-2-hexenal were similar in all forms and both species. These findings suggest that this plant volatile was detected only by the two primary rhinaria, which are common to all morphs. The present study showed that EAG responses were not a simple summation of receptor potentials between recording and reference electrodes in aphids. The localised distribution pattern of olfactory receptor neurones around the recording electrode was also likely to contribute to the EAG responses.  相似文献

We describe two new species of deer truffle, Elaphomyces marmoratus and E. fuscus spp. nov., collected from a secondary forest dominated by Quercus serrata, in Tokyo, Japan. Both species have morphological similarities to E. muricatus and E. granulatus; however, the former has a gleba without a purplish color and the latter has reticulated ascospores more closely resembling E. asperulus. Molecular phylogenetic analyses also support the assignment of these specimens as new species. ITS rDNA homologies with known species were low (<91% and <97%). In addition, phylogenetic trees using neighbor-joining and maximum likelihood methods showed that the sequences of the two new species each formed a monophyletic group within section Elaphomyces with bootstrap support of 99%. Analyses of ectomycorrhizal roots collected concurrently with the ascomata revealed that E. marmoratus is associated with at least Pinus densiflora, while E. fuscus is associated with at least Q. serrata.  相似文献

A nested-PCR temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis (TTGE) approach was developed for the detection of bacteria belonging to phylogenetic cluster I of the genus Clostridium (the largest clostridial group, which represents 25% of the currently cultured clostridial species) in cheese suspected of late blowing. Primers were designed based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence, and the specificity was confirmed in PCRs performed with DNAs from cluster I and non-cluster I species as the templates. TTGE profiles of the PCR products, comprising the V5-V6 region of the 16S rRNA gene, allowed us to distinguish the majority of cluster I species. PCR-TTGE was applied to analyze commercial cheeses with defects. All cheeses gave a signal after nested PCR, and on the basis of band comigration with TTGE profiles of reference strains, all the bands could be assigned to a clostridial species. The direct identification of Clostridium spp. was confirmed by sequencing of excised bands. C. tyrobutyricum and C. beijerinckii contaminated 15 and 14 of the 20 cheese samples tested, respectively, and C. butyricum and C. sporogenes were detected in one cheese sample. Most-probable-number counts and volatile fatty acid were determined for comparison purposes. Results obtained were in agreement, but only two species, C. tyrobutyricum and C. sporogenes, could be isolated by the plating method. In all cheeses with a high amount of butyric acid (>100 mg/100 g), the presence of C. tyrobutyricum DNA was confirmed by PCR-TTGE, suggesting the involvement of this species in butyric acid fermentation. These results demonstrated the efficacy of the PCR-TTGE method to identify Clostridium in cheeses. The sensitivity of the method was estimated to be 100 CFU/g.  相似文献

Muscodor sutura is described as a novel species that is also an endophyte of Prestonia trifidi. Uniquely, this fungus produces a reddish pigment, on potato dextrose agar (PDA), when grown in the dark. In addition, the organism makes some volatile organic compounds that have not been previously reported from this genus, namely, thujopsene, chamigrene, isocaryophyllene, and butanoic acid, 2-methyl. These and other volatile compounds in the mixture possess wide-spectrum antifungal activity and no observable antibacterial activity. Most unusually, on PDA, the newly developing hyphae of this fungus grow in a perfect stitching pattern, in and out of the agar surface. The partial ITS–DNA sequence of this organism is identical to that of Muscodor vitigenus but it differs from all other Muscodor spp. Justification for a new species, as Muscodor sutura, is collectively based on morphological, cultural, chemical, and bioactivity properties.  相似文献
