A multivariate analysis to differentiate morphologically the populations of wild potatoes Solanum cardiophyllum ssp. cardiophyllum and S. cardiophyllum ssp. ehrenbergii was carried out. An analysis of the morphology and the viability of pollen of these potato populations was also made. The results of the morphometric analysis indicate that both subspecies are phenetically different. The pollen grain shape and size in ssp. cardiophyllum are different in northern and southern populations. Pollen diameter is significantly different between subspecies. We investigated the effects of resource distribution on the population structure and distribution of a polytypic bird species. We compared the presence of insect remains (mainly dormant larvae) in the winter diet of two reed bunting subspecies, small billed E. s. schoeniclus and large billed E. s. intermedia and studied the distribution of this resource within reed ( Phragmites sp.) stems in seven north Italian localities where the two subspecies breed (three schoeniclus and four intermedia populations). We also tested if the distributions of winter insect resources and breeding populations of the large bill subspecies overlapped. The distribution of the larvae in reed stems matched closely the distribution of large billed breeding populations. The winter diets of the two subspecies were significantly different in terms of frequency of insect remains. These results, when compared to theoretical models of para-patric distribution, suggest that the two subspecies may be subject to ecological (vicariant) selection maintaining their reproductive isolation. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 21–26.  相似文献

The classification of the Neotropical genera of the Ennominae is reviewed and 267 genera are recognised to occur in this region. Three new genera are described and three others are reinstated, while 48 generic synonyms are newly established. Other changes established in this work include 14 species synonyms and 237 new or reinstated combinations. External features and genitalia of representative members of the genera are illustrated (753 figures). All the known Neotropical species and subspecies of Ennominae are listed ( c . 3470), plus their synonyms. The polytypic Cretan land snail Albinaria hippolyti has a range that is partly fragmented and partly subdivided by hybrid zones. For this reason, it has served as a model species for investigating speciation and radiation in Mediterranean Clausiliidae. The first internal transcribed spacer ( ITS-1 ) of the nuclear ribosomal DNA was sequenced in 20 populations of A. hippolyti and phylogenetically analysed using maximum parsimony. We employed a novel method involving logarithmic weighting of gaps and topological constraints based on bootstrap values. The resulting phylogeography suggests that the species has undergone a recent cycle of range expansion and range reduction. Speciation cannot be linked to major geological vicariance events in the Miocene and Pliocene, as has been suggested previously. Associations between different agonistic and affiliative behavioural patterns of female domestic cats (Felis silvestris catus) were studied. In three groups of intact cats living in confinement frequencies of fourteen agonistic and affiliative behavioural patterns were recorded. The technique of factor analysis (Principal Components Analysis followed by varimax rotation on a dyads X behavioural patterns matrix) was used to detect clusters in these behavioural patterns. Five factors (or types of interindividual relationships) were extracted per group. They accounted collectively for at least 77% of the total variance present in the data. Although differences existed between groups with respect to behavioural patterns included in each factor, four clusters of behaviours could be discriminated: (I) social rubbing, lordosis and rolling in front of partner (sexual behaviour), (II) allogrooming, social sniffing, nosing, sniffing rear and treading (inspection-affiliative behaviour), (III) offensive behaviour and staring, and (IV) defensive behaviour and staring. The polypeptide composition of egg yolk proteins was analysed in 23 species of grasshoppers by means of SDS-PAGE. Each species has a distinguishable set of polypeptides, varying from three to seven (although most show five or six), which can be classified into two groups of high (H) and low molecular weight (L). The patterns can be interpreted following a two-gene model, each with three domains that codify two H and one L polypeptides. The results suggest strong rearrangements in vitellin during speciation and a later slowing in divergence due to functional constraints. Consequently, the vitellin polypeptide composition may be used for species identification but does not provide phylogenetic information above the genus level. Intraspecific variability was found only in Eyprepocnemis plorans , which appears to be quite recent from an evolutionary point of view, and in Chorthippus parallelus where the subspecies differentiation may be older. © 2002 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 75 , 281–290.  相似文献

Microsporogenesis, chromosome number, meiotic behaviour and meiotic index were investigated in Dahlstedtia pinnata and D . pentaphylla , two legume species occurring largely in Brazil, in order to ascertain whether the pollen could limit fertilization events. Archesporial cells originate primary sporogenous and anther wall precursor cells, the tapetum is uniseriate, uninucleate and glandular. Tetrads are tetrahedric or decussate, and cytokinesis is of the simultaneous type. Mature pollen grains are tricolpate and bicellular. No abnormalities in microsporogenesis were found. In both species the chromosome number is n = 11, a number not reported previously. The base number for Dahlstedtia is also 11, because cytological observations include both species of Dahlstedtia . D. pentaphylla has a higher meiotic index and lower individual variation values, and it is considered meiotically stable. Its pollen grains do not limit fertilization. D. pinnata has a lower meiotic index, and the pollen is one of the factors which limit fertilization. A new barbourofelid species, Prosansanosmilus eggeri , is described from the Middle Miocene (MN 5) locality of Sandelzhausen, Germany. It differs from all other European barbourofelid species in being smaller and showing a more plesiomorphic morphology, especially in the relatively less developed sabretooth adaptations, low accessory cusps on the premolars, and the remnant of a very small talonid on the carnassial. The species is, however, stratigraphically later than the more apomorphic P. peregrinus, which is known from MN 4 of Germany and France. A phylogenetic analysis based on dental characters of early nimravids, barbourofelids and felids supports previous results on skull morphology of Barbourofelis that Barbourofelinae is not closely related to the Late Eocene and Oligocene Nimravinae. Instead, both subfamilies should be treated as separate families, with the Barbourofelidae closely related to the Felidae. The Barbourofelidae differ from the Felidae as well as from the Nimravidae s.s ., particularly in the unique morphology of their basicranium. Lizards of the family Eublepharidae exhibit interspecific diversity in body size, sexual size dimorphism (SSD), head size dimorphism (HSD), occurrence of male combat, and presence of male precloacal pores. Hence, they offer an opportunity for testing hypotheses for the evolution and maintenance of sexual dimorphism. Historical analysis of male agonistic behaviour indicates that territoriality is ancestral in eublepharid geckos. Within Eublepharidae, male combat disappeared twice. In keeping with predictions from sexual selection theory, both events were associated with parallel loss of male-biased HSD and ventral scent glands. Eublepharids therefore provide new evidence that male-biased dimorphic heads are weapons used in aggressive encounters and that the ventral glands probably function in territory marking rather than in intersexual communication. Male-biased SSD is a plesiomorphic characteristic and was affected by at least three inversions. Shifts in SSD and male combat were not historically correlated. Therefore, other factors than male rivalry appear responsible for SSD inversions. Eublepharids demonstrate the full scope of Rensch's rule (small species tend to be female-larger, larger species male-larger). In Cyclamen subgenus Psilanthum , previous authors have recognized three species ( C. repandum, C. balearicum and C. creticum ), with C. repandum subdivided into three subspecies (ssp. repandum , ssp. peloponnesiacum and ssp. rhodense ), and two varieties (var. vividum and var. peloponnesiacum ) within C. repandum ssp. peloponnesiacum . To examine the validity of this classification and the degree of morphological differentiation among closely related endemic taxa with disjunct distributions, we undertook analyses of three quantitative and eight qualitative morphological traits of flowers and leaves, most of which have previously been used without statistical comparison in the classification of the different taxa. Cyclamen balearicum showed high levels of morphological differentiation from all other taxa in subgenus Psilanthum consistent with its specific status. In contrast, morphological differentiation between C. creticum and subspecies of C. repandum was similar to that among the three subspecies of C. repandum . When compared with a recent molecular phylogeny of this subgenus, our results suggest that C. creticum may best be described as a geographical subspecies of C. repandum . The two varieties of C. repandum ssp. peloponnesiacum showed few significant differences for individual traits and their overall morphology is very similar to each other. The reproductive biology of two subspecies of Coptis teeta was studied. The species is an endangered, herbaceous perennial, endemic to the Mishmi Hills in Eastern Himalaya . We investigated reproductive strategies of the subspecies, their breeding systems and reproductive output. They had contrasting reproductive strategies; ssp. teeta reproduces sexually and produces fewer ramets, while ssp. lohitensis propagates mostly vegetatively through a higher number of ramets . There is a resource adjustment between vegetative and sexual functions with a greater allocation to the former, particularly in ssp. lohitensis. Manual crosses showed that the species is self- and cross-compatible, but is essentially an autogamous selfer. Seed set in the species is generally low, with higher output in ssp. teeta and lower in ssp. lohitensis. The low fecundity is ascribed to a number of pre- and postfertilization events, including unsuitability of floral features for attracting pollinators, high pollen sterility and high rates of fruit and seed abortion. Sexual reproduction does not contribute significantly towards population increase in this species. A total of nine enzymes coded by 14 loci were assayed for each of six populations (from the north-eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean) of two sea bream subspecies ( Diplodus sargus sargus and Diplodus sargus cadenati ). Diagnostic alleles were observed for each subspecies, although there were several common alleles. Estimates of variance in allele frequencies among samples ( F ST) revealed significant differences ( P  < 0.05) among both subspecies. Genetic divergence was found between Atlantic and Mediterranean samples: values for genetic distances were higher than 0.163. Furthermore, D. sargus cadenati populations displayed a higher mean weight and length than D. sargus sargus populations and significant differences in growth were found among subspecies and populations. A re-evaluation of Minuartia graminifolia has been undertaken based on comparative morphological studies. M. graminifolia subsp. rosani (an endemic of the south-central Apennines and Sicily) and subsp. hungarica (an endemic of the Banat region of Romania) are accepted infraspecific taxa. M. graminifolia subsp. hungarica is lectotypified. M. graminifolia subsp. clandestina is confirmed for Italy; the taxon is neotypified. The type subspecies is considered an endemic to the east-central Alps. Keys to the species of Minuartia ser. Cytological features are presented for the first time for 12 species and one natural hybrid from 16 Brazilian populations of the genus Xyris , including members of two sections ( Xyris and Nematopus ). The results are compared with a review of all available chromosome numbers previously reported for the genus. All analysed species show semi-reticulate interphase nuclei and prophase to prometaphase chromosomes with heterogeneous condensing behaviour. Chromosome numbers varied between 2 n = 26 and 2 n ≈ 108. In Brazil especially, the karyological differentiation of Xyris seems to be generally characterized by dysploid and polyploid increase of the chromosome number, possibly after interspecific hybridization. Molecular (partial mitochondrial 12S ribosomal DNA sequences), morphological and meristic analysis of Lepadogaster lepadogaster lepadogaster , L. l. purpurea and L. zebrina were performed to investigate the relationships between these taxa. On the western shore of mainland Portugal, where the two subspecies of L. lepadogaster occur sympatrically, they differ in microhabitat preferences and their breeding seasons are largely out of phase. This information, combined with data on distribution patterns, led to the following conclusions: Lepadogaster l. purpurea is considered to be a valid species, L. purpurea ( Bonnaterre, 1788 ), different from L. l. lepadogaster , now designated L. lepadogaster ( Bonnaterre, 1788 ). L. zebrina was found to be a synonym of L. lepadogaster . The two newly defined species were found to be in sympatry at Madeira and the Canary islands, the Atlantic coast of the Iberian Peninsula, and the Mediterranean at least as far as Genoa (Italy). A new species, Acantholimon avanosicum Dogan & Akaydin in the Plumbaginaceae is described and illustrated. The species grows on argillaceous slopes in Central Anatolia, Turkey. The diagnostic morphological characters that distinguish it from closely related taxa are discussed. Our knowledge of cat family biology was recently expanded to include a genomics perspective with the completion of a draft whole genome sequence of an Abyssinian cat. The utility of the new genome information has been demonstrated by applications ranging from disease gene discovery and comparative genomics to species conservation. Patterns of genomic organization among cats and inbred domestic cat breeds have illuminated our view of domestication, revealing linkage disequilibrium tracks consequent of breed formation, defining chromosome exchanges that punctuated major lineages of mammals and suggesting ancestral continental migration events that led to 37 modern species of Felidae. We review these recent advances here. As the genome resources develop, the cat is poised to make a major contribution to many areas in genetics and biology.  相似文献

Strong geographical isolation within the distribution of a species may result in differentiated lineages exhibiting conspicuous phenotypic differences. In the present paper, we investigate whether plastid and phenotypic variation is geographically structured within the Olea europaea complex in Macaronesia, which comprises three subspecies separated by oceanic barriers: maroccana (south‐west Morocco), guanchica (Canary Islands) and cerasiformis (Madeira archipelago). Plastid variation showed a significant pattern of geographical structure (NST > GST = 0.56), because of the lack of shared haplotypes among subspecies and the presence of a single and private haplotype in the eastern Canary Islands. Such a clear molecular structure, however, was not reflected in a congruent pattern of phenotypic differentiation among taxa in leaf morpho‐functional traits. Despite the substantial genetic differentiation observed between the subspecies from Madeira and the Canary Islands, they displayed both higher leaf size (leaf area) and specific leaf area (leaf surface area‐to‐mass ratio) than their continental counterparts, probably as a result of oceanic conditions in subtropical environments. The general flowering (GF) events of forests in south-east Asia are perhaps the most spectacular phenomena in tropical biology. GF events occur at multiyear intervals. In GF, most dipterocarp species and many plants of other families come into flower and set fruit massively; these species and plants rarely flower except during GF events. GF is unique, because it can occur over thousands of kilometers and involve hundreds of plant species representing diverse families and lifeforms. It also involves strict mast fruiting. Satiation of generalist seed predators has been considered a primary force for GF. However, recent observations indicate that several selective agents rather than a single major factor may shape GF. In addition to the satiation of generalist predators, promotion of pollination could be one of the selective factors for GF, since synchronized flowering of many species causes an increase in pollinator activity through immigration and population growth. Although environmental prediction for better establishment of seedlings may also be involved in GF, no field data have been reported to support this idea.
