The intensification of agricultural land use and urbanisation has increased nutrient loads in aquatic ecosystems. Nitrogen loads can alter ecosystem structure and functioning, resulting in increased algal productivity, algal blooms and eutrophication. The principal aim of the present paper is to extend the use of epilithic δ15N signatures to a lake ecosystem in order to evaluate the potential impact of anthropogenic nitrogen discharges (organic and inorganic) that can also reach coastal waters.Epilithic associations were collected from volcanic rocks in different seasons in shallow water along the entire perimeter of Lake Bracciano and analysed for their nitrogen stable isotope signatures. Furthermore, some stones were moved from an unpolluted site to a polluted one in order to verify the effect on the nitrogen signature of the epilithic association. The epilithon’s δ15N signatures provided strong evidence of the space-time variability of N inputs. The differing quality of nitrogen loads was reflected in high isotopic variation within the lake, especially at the beginning of summer (1.7‰  δ15N  13.3‰), while in winter, when anthropogenic pressure was lowest, the δ15N signature variation was less accentuated (3.1‰  δ15N  7.6‰). At all sampling times, spatial variability was found to be related to the various human activities along the lake shore (especially tourism and agriculture), while seasonal variation at all sampling sites was related to the intensity of anthropogenic pressures (higher in summer and lower in winter).Our results showed that epilithic algal associations and the physicochemical properties of the water did not influence the δ15N signature, which in contrast was strongly related to the site-specific effect of human activities around the lake. Thus, the distribution of δ15N across space and time can be used to direct nutrient reduction strategies in the region and can assist in monitoring the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.  相似文献

We investigated the ability of the ichthyotoxic haptophyte Prymnesium parvum to use sewage-originated nutrients applying stable carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) isotope techniques. P. parvum was cultured under N and phosphorus (P) sufficient and deficient conditions in either sewage effluent-based medium or in a nitrate- and phosphate-based control. Cell densities and toxicities were monitored and stable carbon N isotopes signatures (δ13C and δ15N) of P. parvum and the sewage effluent analysed. Nitrogen and P sufficient cultures achieved the highest biomass followed by P and N deficient cultures, regardless of sewage effluent additions. The P deficient cultures with sewage effluent had higher toxicity, estimated as haemolytic activity (9.4 ± 0 × 10?5 mg Saponin equiv. cell?1) compared to the P deficient control and to all N deficient and NP sufficient cultures. Nutrient deficient conditions had no effect on the cell δ15N, but a decreasing effect on δ13C in the inorganic N deficient treatment. Growth in sewage-based media was followed by a substantial increase in the cell δ15N (10.4–16.1‰) compared to the control treatments (2.4–4.9‰), showing that P. parvum is capable of direct use of sewage-originated N, inorganic as well as organic. Uptake of terrestrial derived C in the sewage treatments was confirmed by a decrease in cell δ13C, implying that P. parvum is able to utilize organic nutrients in sewage effluent.  相似文献

Predatory beetles are an important component of the natural enemy complex that preys on insect pests such as aphids within agroecosystems. Tracing diet origins and movement of natural enemies aids understanding their role in the food web and informs strategies for their effective conservation. Field sampling and laboratory experiments were carried out to examine the changes of carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) among crops (cotton and maize), pests (cotton and maize aphids), and between wing and abdomen of predatory beetles, Propylea japonica, and to test the hypothesis that prey origins, proportions and feeding periods of the predatory beetles can be deduced by this stable isotope analysis. Results showed that the δ13C values both in wing and abdomen of adult P. japonica were changing from a C3- to a C4-based diet of aphids reared on maize or cotton, respectively; the isotope ratio of their new C4 substrates were detectable within 7 days and the δ15N values began to reflect their new C4 substrates within 3 days. The relationship between δ13C and δ15N values of P. japonica adults in wing or abdomen and diets of aphids from a C3-based resource transitioning to a C4-based resource were described best in linear or quadratic equations. Results suggest that integrative analysis of δ13C and δ15N values can be regarded as a useful method for quantifying to trace prey origins, proportions of diets and feeding periods of natural enemies. The results can provide quantifying techniques for habitat management of natural enemies.  相似文献

The strength and source of anthropogenic sulfur (S) deposition is an important area of research in both environmental and ecological disciplines. Here S concentration, stable isotope (δ34S) and photosynthetic pigments analyses were performed on epilithic mosses at Guiyang area (SW China) for investigating the distribution, origin and effect of urban-derived S at the urban–rural scale. Based on the variation of moss S, anthropogenic S was estimated to account for about 52% of total S in urban mosses and 35% in rural mosses within 30 km. The deposition of urban-derived S was biologically determined within 57 km from the urban center, but only 22% (about 24.4 × 106 kg-S annually) reached over 30 km, with 78% (about 85.9 × 106 kg-S) deposited within 30 km. δ34Smoss signatures suggested the major source of anthropogenic S was still from coal combustion, and comparable δ34Smoss values along the urban–rural transect suggested the inputs of urban-derived S into rural ecosystems. Unexpectedly, moss photosynthetic pigments did not show a decrease with S deposition, but express higher concentrations in the urban than in the rural. In contrast, correlations between moss photosynthetic pigments, and tissue nitrogen (N) and δ15N demonstrated a fertilizing effect of elevated N deposition on moss photosynthesis, which might buffer or offset the negative effect of S deposition on urban mosses. Collective evidences suggest that S% and δ34S in epilithic mosses provided useful information for determining anthropogenic S deposition on the urban–rural scale, but moss photosynthetic pigments may not be applicable for reflecting S loading under high N deposition.  相似文献

Sediment trap samples collected over a seven-year period (February 1991–October 1997) from Guaymas Basin in the Gulf of California were used to study the oxygen isotope composition of five species of planktonic foraminifera, Globigerinoides ruber (white), Globigerina bulloides, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, and Globorotalia menardii. The δ18O data were analyzed for temporal and interspecies variability and were compared to local hydrography to evaluate the use of each species in reconstructing past oceanographic applications. The two surface dwelling species, G. ruber and G. bulloides displayed the lowest δ18O values (~ 0.0 to ? 5.0‰), while δ18O values for the thermocline dwelling N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, and G. menardii were higher (~ 0.0 to ? 2.0‰). The δ18O of G. ruber most accurately records measured sea surface temperatures (SSTs) throughout the year. G. bulloides δ18O tracks SSTs during the winter–spring upwelling period but for the remainder of the year records slightly colder, subsurface temperatures. The difference between the δ18O of the surface dwelling species, G. ruber and G. bulloides, and that of the thermocline dwelling species, N. dutertrei, P. obliquiloculata, and G. menardii, was used to estimate the surface to thermocline temperature gradient. During the winter these δ18O differences are small (~ 0.50‰) reflecting a well-mixed water column. These interspecies δ18O differences increase during the summer (~ 1.90‰) in response to the strong thermal stratification that exists at this time of year.  相似文献

Cribra orbitalia (CO), or porotic hyperostosis (PH) of the orbital roof, is one of the most common pathological conditions found in archaeological subadult skeletal remains. Reaching frequencies higher than 50% in many prehistoric samples, CO has been generally attributed to a variety of factors including malnutrition (e.g., megaloblastic anemia) and parasitism. In this study, we tested the relationship between CO, trace element concentrations, and stable isotope values (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O) in subadult skeletons from a 17th to 18th century cemetery in the historic town of JĿkabpils, Latvia. A total of 28 subadults were examined, seven of which (25%) showed evidence of CO. Bioarchaeological evidence indicated high mortality for children in this cemetery: half of the burials were subadults under the age of 14, while a third were under the age of four. Life expectancy at birth was estimated to have been only 21.6 years. Trace element concentrations measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma ⿿ Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) showed no relationship between presence or absence of CO and levels of manganese, zinc, strontium, barium, copper, cadmium, or lead in the bones (p > 0.05). However, a significant correlation (p < 0.05) was found between the presence of CO and decreased levels of iron. The correlations between CO and decreased levels of copper and lead approached significance (p = 0.056 for both elements). Individuals with CO furthermore displayed significantly lower δ15N isotope values, suggesting greater consumption of lower trophic level food resources than those unaffected by CO; δ13C and δ18O values, in contrast, showed no significant differences. These results suggest that the prevalence of CO may be related to dietary deficiencies. In this case, low iron levels may also signify a diet low in other key vitamins (e.g., B9 and B12), which are known to cause megaloblastic anemia.  相似文献

We determined the stable oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of live (Rose Bengal stained) tests belonging to different size classes of two benthic foraminiferal species from the Pakistan continental margin. Samples were taken at two sites, with water depths of about 135 and 275 m, corresponding to the upper boundary and upper part of the core region of the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). For Uvigerina ex gr. Uvigerina semiornata and Bolivina aff. Bolivina dilatata, δ13C and δ18O values increased significantly with increasing test size. In the case of Uvigerina ex gr. U. semiornata, δ13C increased linearly by about 0.105‰ for each 100-μm increment in test size, whereas δ18O increased by 0.02 to 0.06‰ per 100 μm increment. For Bolivina aff. B. dilatata the relationship between test size and stable isotopic composition is better described by logarithmic equations. A strong positive linear correlation is observed between δ18O and δ13C values of both taxa, with a constant ratio of δ18O and δ13C values close to 2:1. This suggests that the strong ontogenetic effect is mainly caused by kinetic isotope fractionation during CO2 uptake. Our data underline the necessity to base longer δ18O and δ13C isotope records derived from benthic foraminifera on size windows of 100 μm or less. This is already common practice in down-core isotopic studies of planktonic foraminifera.  相似文献

Carbon and nitrogen are important elements in biogeochemical studies of tidal wetlands. Three wetland zones in Luoyuan Bay in the Fujian province were chosen for this study; the Spartina alterniflora flat zone with Spartina alterniflora growing, the silt zone with no Spartina alterniflora growing and the Spartina alterniflora-silt flat zone – a transition zone between the two. The spatial and seasonal variations of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), stable isotopes of organic material (δ13C, δ15N), C/N ratio, average particle size and sediment composition in surface and vertical sediments of different ecological zones were analyzed. Carbon and nitrogen accumulation and particle size effects in the different ecological zones were discussed and the indicators of δ13C and C/N ratios were also compared. TOC, TN, δ13C contents, C/N ratios, and average particle size varied within the ranges of 0.611–1.133%, 0.053–0.090%, ?22.60 to ?18.92‰, 12.3–15.7, and 6.4–8.7 μm, respectively. Sediments were mainly silt-sized. Besides δ15N values, the other parameters, such as TOC, TN, δ13C contents, C/N ratios, and average particle size showed an obvious zonal distribution in surface sediments. The distribution of TOC and TN contents reflected the distribution of Spartina alterniflora within the bay. The profile and seasonal variations of these parameters in different ecological zones indicated that variations in the Spartina alterniflora flat and transition zones were complex because of the effect of Spartina alterniflora. Vertical and seasonal variations were sampled in the silt flat area. The profile and seasonal variations of TOC, TN and δ13C were similar in the transition zone and the Spartina alterniflora flat zone. Seasonal concentrations of TOC, TN and δ13C decreased from autumn > spring > winter > summer. The seasonal variation of carbon and nitrogen in the sediments may be influenced by temperature, particle size, plankton and benthos. The particle size effect was significant in the surface sediments and profile sediments of the transition zone. However, other factors had a greater effect on the distributions of TOC and TN in the Spartina alterniflora flat and silt flat zones. C/N ratios in sediments of the Spartina alterniflora flat, transition zone and silt flat were close to or > 12, indicating that the organic material source was dominated by terrestrial inputs. However, δ13C values decreased from the Spartina alterniflora flat zone > transition zone > silt flat zone indicating that the organic material source was predominantly from marine inputs. Thus the indications from C/N ratios and δ13C were different. There was no clear relationship between C/N ratios and δ13C values and a better relationship between δ13C values and TOC concentrations suggested that δ13C values provided a better indication of the organic source. Limited amounts of organic material came from Spartina alterniflora. This study has provided basic data for researching biogeochemical processes of biogenic elements in tidal wetlands and vegetation restoration, and has also provided a reference for assessing and protecting the environment and ecological systems in wetlands.  相似文献

Trace elements incorporated in planktonic foraminiferal test carbonate are commonly used as paleoproxies. For instance, Mg/Ca ratios are frequently used for reconstructing sea surface temperature and, together with the foraminiferal stable oxygen isotope ratios, are also used as paleosalinity proxy. Foraminiferal Sr/Ca ratios constitute another example of the application of trace elements in paleostudies since they may reflect the Sr/Ca values of seawater. However, over the past few decades it has been proven that the incorporation of trace elements in foraminiferal calcite is controlled by more than one environmental parameter. To quantify the effect of salinity on Mg and Sr incorporation planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides sacculifer (sensu stricto) were grown in the laboratory under different environmental conditions. Laboratory experiments allowed us to separate a direct salinity effect from a possible independent impact through differences in the calcite saturation state of the seawater (Ω). Although the temperature effect is more important than the salinity effect, a change of 4 salinity units is equivalent to a 1 °C bias on Mg/Ca-based temperatures. This effect of salinity on Mg incorporation is minor. However, when using Mg/Ca-based temperatures in combination with foraminiferal δ18O to calculate salinity, it cannot be neglected. The present study shows salinity as the overriding control on Mg incorporation within the range of Ω studied (Ω between 5.25 and 6.50; [CO32−] between 218 and 270 μmol/kg) at a constant temperature of 26 °C. In contrast, Ω appears to be the main control on foraminiferal Sr incorporation (0.10 mmol/mol per 100 µmol/kg rise in [CO32−]), whereas salinity has a non significant influence on Sr/Ca.  相似文献

Carbon and oxygen stable isotope records were compared for Jurassic/Cretaceous (J/K) boundary sections located in the Tethyan Realm (Brodno, Western Slovakia, and Puerto Escaño, Southern Spain; bulk limestones), and the Boreal Realm (Nordvik Peninsula, Northern Siberia, belemnites). Since a detailed biostratigraphic correlation of these Tethyan and Boreal sections is impossible due to different faunal assemblages, correlation of the isotope records was based on paleomagnetic data. This novel approach can improve our understanding of the synchroneity of individual isotope excursions in sections where detailed biostratigraphic correlation is impossible. No significant excursions in either the carbon or oxygen isotope records to be used for future Boreal/Tethyan correlations were found around the J/K boundary (the upper Tithonian and lower Berriasian; magnetozones M20n to M18n) in the studied sections. At the Nordvik section, where a much longer section (middle Oxfordian–basal Boreal Berriasian) was documented, the transition from the middle Oxfordian to the Kimmeridgian and further to the Volgian is characterized by a decrease in belemnite δ18O values (from δ18O values up to + 1.6‰ vs. V-PDB in the Oxfordian to values between + 0.3 and ? 0.8‰ in the late Volgian and earliest Boreal Berriasian). This trend, which has previously been reported from the Russian Platform and Tethyan Realm sections, corresponds either to gradual warming or a decrease in seawater δ18O. Supposing that the oxygen isotope compositions of seawater in the Arctic/Boreal and Tethyan Realms were similar, then the differences between oxygen isotope datasets for these records indicate differences in temperature. The Boreal/Tethyan temperature difference of 7–9 °C in the middle and late Oxfordian decreases towards the J/K boundary, indicating a significant decrease in latitudinal climatic gradients during the Late Jurassic. Two positive carbon isotope excursions recorded for the middle Oxfordian and upper Kimmeridgian in the Nordvik section can be correlated with a similar excursion described earlier for the Russian Platform. Minor influence of biofractionation at the carbon isotopes, and the influence of migration of belemnites to deeper, slightly cooler water at the oxygen isotopes, cannot be excluded for the obtained belemnite data.  相似文献

Estrogens were prohibited in the food producing animals by European Union (96/22/EC directive) and added to the Report on Carcinogens in United States since 2002. Due to very low concentration in serum or urine (~pg/mL), the method of control its abuse had not been fully developed.The endogenous estrogens were separated from urines of 18 adult men and women. The exogenous estrogens were chemical reference standards and over the counter preparations. Two patients of dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB) administered exogenous estradiol and the urines were collected for 72 h. The urinary estrogens were separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and confirmed. The exogenous and exogenous estrogens were analyzed by gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC–C–IRMS) to determine the 13C/12C ratio (δ13C‰).The δ13C‰ values of reference standard of E1, E2, and E3 were ?29.36 ± 0.72, ?27.98 ± 0.35, ?27.62 ± 0.51, respectively. The δ13C‰ values of the endogenous E1, E2, and E3 were ?21.62 ± 1.07, ?22.14 ± 0.98, and ?21.88 ± 1.16, with P < 0.01 (t-test). Two DUB patients’ urinary estradiol δ13C‰ values was depleted to ?28.02 ± 0.33 after the administration. The progesterone, 17α-hydroxyprogesterone, pregnanediol, as well as desogestrel and ethinylestradiol from contraceptives were also determined.Stable carbon isotope analysis can distinguish the endogenous and exogenous urinary estrogen in human.  相似文献

Oxygen isotope compositions of phosphate (δ18Op) were measured in tooth enamel from captive and wild individuals of 8 crocodilian species. A rough linear correlation is observed between the δ18Op of all the studied species and the oxygen isotope composition of ambient water (δ18Ow). Differences in mean air temperature, diet and physiology could contribute significantly to the large scatter of δ18Op values. The combination of these parameters results in a fractionation equation for which the slope (0.82) is lower than that expected (≥ 1) from predictive model equations that assume temperature and diet as fixed parameters. Taking into account large uncertainties, the observed oxygen isotope fractionation between phosphate and ambient water does not statistically differ from that formerly established for aquatic turtles. Case studies show that δ18Op values of fossil crocodile tooth enamel can be used to discriminate between marine and freshwater living environments within a precision of about ± 2‰ only.  相似文献

Nitrogen has complex effects on plant–herbivore–parasitoid tritrophic interactions. The negative effects of low nitrogen fertilization in host plants on insect herbivores can be amplified to the higher trophic levels. In the present study, we examined the impact of varying nitrogen fertilization (42, 112, 196, and 280 ppm) of cotton plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.) on the interactions between the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), and the hymenopteran endoparasitoid Cotesia marginiventris (Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). We predicted that the development and fitness of C. marginiventris would be adversely affected by low host plant nitrogen fertilization through the herbivore S. exigua. The percentage of C. marginiventris offspring developing to emerge and spin a cocoon, and total mortality of parasitized S. exigua larvae were unaffected by nitrogen level. The developmental time of C. marginiventris larvae in S. exigua larvae feeding on low (42 ppm) nitrogen cotton plants was approximately 30% longer than that of those feeding on higher (112, 196, and 280 ppm) nitrogen plants. Parasitoid size (length of right metathoracic tibia), a proxy for fitness, of C. marginiventris males was positively affected by nitrogen level. Total amounts of S. exigua hemolymph proteins were not affected by nitrogen level, but were reduced by parasitism by C. marginiventris. Two proteins with molecular weights of ca. 84 and 170 kDa dominated the S. exigua larval hemolymph proteins. Concentrations of the 170 kDa hemolymph protein were unaffected by nitrogen treatment, but parasitism reduced concentrations of the 170 kDa protein. Concentrations of the 84 kDa protein, on the other hand, were interactively affected by parasitism and nitrogen treatment: higher nitrogen fertilization (112, 196, and 280 ppm) increased protein concentrations relative to the 42 ppm treatment for unparasitized S. exigua larvae, whereas nitrogen treatment had no effects on parasitized larvae. For S. exigua larvae feeding on 42 ppm nitrogen plants, parasitism increased concentration of the 84 kDa protein, while for those feeding on 112, 196, and 280 ppm nitrogen plants, parasitism decreased concentrations of the protein. Possible mechanisms and ecological consequences for the extended development of C. marginiventris on S. exigua hosts grown on low-nitrogen plants are discussed.  相似文献

Specimens of the benthic foraminifer Ammonia beccarii were cultured in the laboratory in order to determine the relation between temperature and Mg/Ca and oxygen isotope values in their tests. Asexual reproduction in this species provides a large number of juveniles that were allowed to grow into maturity at temperatures ranging from 10 to 27 °C and at salinities ranging from 18 to 33 PSU. The Mg/Ca in a calcite increase exponentially and δ18O decreases linearly with the temperature. Salinity has no significant impact on either Mg/Ca or δ18O. We show how the combination of these two parameters can be used to reconstruct seawater δ18O and temperature in shallow marine habitats.  相似文献

Trophic relationships among common coastal species in the Bohai Strait, North China Sea, were investigated in this study using stable isotope ratios of carbon (13C/12C) and nitrogen (15N/14N) as tracers. During the research cruises of this study, 16 species of invertebrates and 18 species of fishes were collected, as were various food sources (phytoplankton, macroalgae, and sediment). The carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios of all collected samples were measured and used for trophic level analyses. The results showed that the grazers Oregonia gracilis, Notoacmea schrenckii, Chlorostoma rustica, and Chelon affinis, preferentially consumed Zostera marina (p < 0.01), whereas Anthocidaris crassispina preferred Ulva conglobata (p < 0.01). Two trophic models based on nitrogen isotope ratios were built to identify the trophic level of each species. The model that combined food sources was more appropriate than the model that used a single primary producer to identify the relative trophic positions of primary consumers. Scombermorus niphonius, an important fishery resource, was at the top trophic level. The seastar Asterias amurensis was at the highest level among the invertebrates and directly threatened production of shellfish. Based on the trophic level and food source relationships identified in this study, we gave some advice for ecological restoration, such as optimizing the structure of food source distribution, limiting seastar numbers, and improving the applicability of habitat for fishery species.  相似文献

Stable isotopes (δ15N and δ13C) were used to assess the changes in exposure and assimilation of sewage-derived nutrients in an aquatic food web following changes in effluent quality over an 8 year period at two municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that discharge to the Grand River, in southern Ontario. Upgrades at the Kitchener WWTP started in late 2012 to enhance nitrification, while the Waterloo WWTP had a series of construction issues at the plant that resulted in a deterioration of its effluent quality over the study period (2007–2014). Fish (rainbow darter, Etheostoma caeruleum) and primary consumers (benthic invertebrates) were sampled in the receiving waters associated with each outfall. Upgrades at the Kitchener WWTP resulted in improved effluent quality with total annual ammonia output dropping by nearly sixfold (583–100 t), while the Waterloo WWTP increased its total annual ammonia output by nearly fourfold (135–500 t) over the duration of the study. Downstream of the Kitchener WWTP, the reduction in total ammonia output negatively correlated with changes in δ15N of rainbow darter from being depleted (prior to the upgrade) to reflecting signatures similar to those at the upstream reference site. The biota downstream of the Waterloo WWTP showed the opposite trend, going from slightly enriched, to being depleted relative to the upstream reference sites. δ13C was consistently higher downstream of both WWTPs regardless of changing effluent quality, and annual variability in δ13C was associated with annual river discharge. In a laboratory based dietary switch study conducted with rainbow darter, the isotope half-life in muscle (29 days for δ15N and 33 days for δ13C) were determined and these rapid changes were consistent with responses in muscle of wild fish. This is a unique study that was able to contrast two WWTPs in the same watershed as they underwent major changes in treatment processes. Stable isotopes were very effective as a tool to trace the changes in aquatic biota due to changes in wastewater effluent quality, both improvements and deterioration over time.  相似文献

For diet reconstruction studies using stable isotopes, accurate estimates of trophic shift (Δδtrophic) are necessary to get reliable results. Several factors have been identified which affect the trophic shift. The goal of the present experiment was to test whether measurements of the activities of enzymes could improve the accuracy of estimation of trophic shift in fish. Forty-eight Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were fed under controlled conditions with two diets differing in their protein content (21 and 41%) each at four different levels (4, 8, 12 and 16 g kg? 0.8 d? 1). At the end of the feeding experiment, proximate composition, whole body δ13C and δ15N as well as the activities of enzymes involved in anabolism and catabolism were measured. Step-wise regression specified contributing variables for Δδ15N (malic enzyme, aspartate aminotransferase and protein content) and Δδ13Clipid-free material (aspartate aminotransferase and protein content). Explained variation by using the significant main effects was about 70% for Δδ15N and Δδ13Clipid-free material, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that enzyme activities are suitable indicators to improve estimates of trophic shift.  相似文献

A 50-year tree-ring δ18O chronology of Abies spectabilis growing close to the tree line (3850 m asl) in the Nepal Himalaya is established to explore its dendroclimatic potential. Response function analysis with ambient climatic records revealed that tree-ring δ18O is primarily governed by rainfall during the monsoon season (June–September), and the regression model accounts for 35% of the variance in rainfall. Extreme dry years identified in instrumental weather data are detected in the δ18O chronology. Further, tree-ring δ18O is much more sensitive to rainfall fluctuations than other tree-ring parameters such as width and density typically used in dendroclimatology. Correlation analyses with Niño 3.4 SST reveal time-dependent behavior of ENSO–monsoon relationships.  相似文献

Hydro-distilled essential oil from Kenyan Piper capense (Piperaceae) was analysed by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and evaluated for larvicidal activity against the malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae. The oil consisted mainly of sesquiterpene hydrocarbons which accounted for 43.9% of the oil. The major sesquiterpenes were δ-cadinene (16.82%), β-bisabolene (5.65%), and bicyclogermacrene (3.30%). The oil also had appreciable amounts of monoterpene hydrocarbons (30.64%), including β-pinene (7.24%) and α-phellandrene (4.76%), and arylpropanoids (8.64%), including myristicin (4.26%). The oil showed larvicidal activity against third instar larvae of A. gambiae, with LC50 and LC90 values of 34.9 and 85.0 ppm, respectively. Most of the larvae died within the first few hours. The high larvicidal activity of this oil was indicated by the fact that over 80% mortality was observed at a concentration of 100 ppm after 24 h. These results compared favourably with the commercial larvicide pylarvex® which had LC50 and LC90 values of 3.7 and 7.8 ppm, respectively. Application of this oil or of products derived from it to larval habitats may lead to promising results in malaria and mosquito management programmes.  相似文献

The carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of C3/C4 mixed grassland is reflected in the δ13C of diet, hair or faeces of grazers, if 13C discrimination (13Δ) between grassland vegetation and these tissues is known and constant. However, these relationships could be modified by selective grazing or differential digestibility of the C3 and C4 components, potentially creating a bias between grassland and grazer tissue δ13C. Importantly, these factors have never been studied in detail. We investigated the relation between δ13C of C3/C4 grassland vegetation and that of faeces and hair of sheep in a 3-year (2005–2007) experiment in the Inner Mongolian semi-arid steppe. The experiment employed six stocking rates (0.375–2.25 sheep ha?1 year?1; four replications), which allowed for a large variation in species composition, digestibility, and diet selection. Faecal-nitrogen content, a proxy for digestibility, decreased from 1.9% to 1.5% during the grazing period due to aging of the herbage. At the same time, the C3/C4 ratio decreased due to the later growth initiation of C4 species. 13Δ between diet and faeces (13ΔDF; 0.6‰) and between diet and hair (13ΔDH; ?3.9‰) were not influenced by stocking rate, period in the season or C3/C4 ratio. Moreover, faeces–hair discrimination (13ΔFH; ?4.3‰), which reflects differences between digestibility of the C3 and C4 components, did not vary along the different gradients. The δ13C of grassland vegetation can be estimated from the δ13C of sheep faeces and hair, provided that 13Δ was accounted for. This is useful for landscape- or regional-scale investigations or reconstruction of C3/C4 vegetation distribution from faeces and hair, which provide different temporal and spatial integration of grassland isotope signals.  相似文献
