Stand structure and woody species diversity in a subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest grown in a silicate habitat, Okinawa Island, have been investigated on the basis of stand stratification. The forest stand consisted of four layers. The floristic composition of the top and the lower three layers was only slightly similar, although approximately one-third of the species were common to them. Mean tree weight decreased from the top toward the bottom layer whereas tree density increased from the top downward. This trend resembled the mean weight–density trajectory of self-thinning plant populations. The relationship between mean tree height and tree density for the upper two layers supported Yamakuras quasi –1/2 power law of tree height. The values of the Shannon–Wiener index, H, and the equitability index, J, tended to increase from the top layer downward except for the bottom layer. The values of H and J were, respectively, 4.83 bit and 0.82 for trees taller than 0.10 m. The lower layers contained many species of smaller height. High species diversity of the forest depended on small trees in the lower layers. Conservation of small trees in the lower layers, especially the bottom layer, is indispensable for sound maintenance of Okinawan evergreen broadleaf forests.  相似文献

Summary N, N-Ethylene-bridged bis-(S)-methionine[(2S, 7S)-2, 7-bis(2-methyl-thioethyl)-3,6-diazaoctanedioic acid] derived from (S)-methionine and 1,2-dibromoethane was cyclized and esterified simultaneously in boiling ethanol in the presence of an appropriate amount of strong acid such asp-toluenesulfonic acid, affording a cyclic compound,N, N-ethylene-bridged (S)-methionyl-(S)-methionine ethyl ester {ethyl(2S, 3S)-4-(methylthio)-2-[2-oxo-3-(2-methylthioethyl)-1-piperazinyl] butanoate}, exclusively in 80–90% yields. It was also found that, by applying this method, 70–80% yields of the otherN, N-ethylenebridged dipeptides containing (S)-tryptophan, -tyrosine and -N()-benzyloxycarbonyllysine were obtained.  相似文献

The rate of CO2- and p-benzoquione-dependent photosynthetic O2 evolution by Anabaena variabilis cells remained unaltered and the rate of O2 uptake observed after switching off the light (endogenous respiration) was enhanced by a factor of 6–8 when the O2 concentration was increased from 200 to 400 M. Photosystem-I-linked O2 uptake and respiration of the cells incubated with ascorbate and N,N,NN-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine was not appreciable influenced by the O2 concentration. 2-Iodo-6-isopropyl-3-methyl-2,4,4-trinitrodiphenyl ether, blocking electron transfer at the plastoquinone level, suppressed O2 evolution and had no influence on endogenous respiration. 2-n-Heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide, an inhibitor of electron transfer between photosystems II and I, as well as the cytochrome-oxidase inhibitors N 3 - , CN- and NH2OH, caused a 35–50% retardation of endogenous respiration and blocked photosynthetic O2 evolution. The molar ratio of cytochromes b6, f, c-553, aa3 and photosystem-I reaction centers in the isolated membranes equalled approx. 2:1:2:0.7:2. The taxonomic composition and the abundance of two communities of snakes were studied in two different areas of southern Nigeria. One community was studied in a derived savanna area (environs of Ejule, 06°54N, 07°23E), and one community was studied in a moist rainforest area (environs of Eket, 04°50N, 07°59E). Both the specific diversity and the mean frequency of observation of snakes were significantly higher in the forest area than in the savanna area, and the dominance index was higher in the savanna than in the forest site. However, most of the species were found in only one of the two areas, depending on their habitat requirements (e.g. Gastropyxis smaragdina, Dispholidus typus, Thelotornis kirtlandii, Dendroaspis jamesoni, Bitis nasicornis, Causus maculatus, etc). The forest community housed a significant number of arboreal and semiaquatic taxa, but in both sites most of the species were terrestrial. The commonest species in the forest area was an oviparous, semiaquatic, batracophagous natricine snake (Afronatrix anoscopus), whereas the commonest species in the savanna area was an oviparous terrestrial lacertophagous psammophine snake (Psammophis phillipsi). Some conservation implications of our biodiversity analyses are presented. It is suggested that the moist rainforest represents a critically endangered habitat, and should deserve special attention by the international scientific community. Oil industry activity is especially dangerous for snake communities, especially in the southernmost regions of Nigeria.  相似文献

The subject RNA models the binding site for the coat protein of the R17 virus, as well as the ribosome recognition sequence for the R17 replicase gene. With an RNA of this size, overlaps among the sugar protons complicate assignments of the 1H NMR spectrum. The cross peaks that overlap significantly in 2D-NOE spectra can frequently be resolved by introducing a third, in our approach the double-quantum, frequency axis. In particular the planes in a 3D-NOE/2QC spectrum perpendicular to the 2Q axis are extremely useful, showing a highly informative repeating NOE-2Q pattern. In this experiment substantial J-coupling confers special advantages. This always occurs for geminal pairs (H5/H5 for RNA plus H2/H2 for DNA), as well as for H5/H6, for H3/H4 in sugars with substantial populations of the N-pucker, for H1/H2 for S-puckered sugars, and usually for H2/H3. For the 24-mer RNA hairpin the additional information from the 3D-NOE/2QC spectrum allowed assignment of all of the non-exchangeable protons, eliminating the need for stable-isotope labeling.  相似文献

Myobacterium avium LM1 was exposed to concentrations of 5-fluorouracil (5FU) that ranged from 0 to 100 g/ml. Growth inhibition was inversely proportional to the concentration of the drug. DNA was extracted from cells grown in medium that contained [14C]5FU, but no carrier. The [14C]DNA was enzymatically hydrolyzed to deoxyribonucleotides, which were separated and fractionated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The isotope was located in 2-deoxycytidine 5-monophosphate (dCMP) and 2-deoxythymidine 5-monophosphate (dTMP), with dCMP containing the majority. There was no radioactivity at the elution times for 5-fluoro-2-deoxyuridine 5-monophosphate or 2-deoxyuridine 5-monophosphate. These results suggested that 5FU was dehalogenated and the uracil moiety ultimately converted into cytosine and thymine deoxyribonucleotides. Cells were grown in [3H]uracil, and [3H]DNA was extracted and analyzed by HPLC. The isotope was found only in the pyrimidine deoxyribonucleotides, with dCMP containing 4.1 times that in dTMP. Thus, it was demonstrated that uracil and dehalogenated 5FU were not directly incorporated into DNA, but rather converted to cytosine and thymine and then incorporated into DNA by a salvage pathway.  相似文献

The natural forests of Yanbaru, in the northern part of Okinawa Island, harbor many endemic and endangered birds and mammals, and are dominated by an evergreen oak, Castanopsis sieboldii. The Simpson diversity (D) and equitability index (J) were calculated using survey data on number of stems ( 4.5 cm DBH) of each species found in sample plots.Near-climax old forests (age 50 yr, without pine trees) showed high species diversity of trees, 0.92 ± 0.01 in D and 0.83 ± 0.05 in J for trees of which DBH 4.5 cm, and 0.81 ± 0.04 in D and 0.75 ± 0.05 in J for trees of DBH 10 cm.These high values are comparable to those of tropical rain forests. Although even young forests showed high species diversity, diversity indices tended to increase with forest age.The U.S. Marine Corps leases the eastern half of Yanbaru which contains most of these near-climax forests. Conservation of natural forests in this area is recommended.  相似文献

The sedentary fauna of sublittoral boulders was studied at five sites with very different environmental conditions within Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve (51° 30 N, 9° 18 W). The degree of competition was assessed through the construction of competitive hierarchies built up from the results of nearly 3000 interactions between organisms. Communities at all sites were predominantly hierarchically organised with few stand-offs recorded. Density of interactions was correlated with total space occupation. Flow speed at all sites was logged over 24 h and this factor also correlated with space occupation. Degree of disturbance was assessed through the use of marked boulders at each site. Species diversity peaked where all factors were moderate and was lowest at extreme sites. The effects of these environmental variables and biotic factors in determining community composition are discussed, and a working model detailing a Minimum Stress Inflexion is described. This represents an extension of the intermediate disturbance hypothesis in that it is proposed that disturbance in this system may serve to reduce sediment load as opposed to preventing space monopolisation in the classical model.  相似文献

Summary Imidazolides of dinucleotides such as ImpApA can be formed from the corresponding dinucleotides in a two-stage process, which gives up to 15% yields under potentially prebiotic conditions. First a solution of the dinucleotide and sodium trimetaphosphate is dried out at constant temperature and humidity. This produces polyphosphates such as pnApA in excellent yield (80%). The products are dissolved in water, imidazole is added, and the solution is dried out again. The tetrasaccharides GalNAcß1-4[NeuAc2-3]Galß1-4Glc and GalNAcß1-4[NeuAc2-3]Galß1-4GlcNAc were synthesised by enzymic transfer of GalNAc from UDP-GalNAc to 3-sialyllactose (NeuAc2-3Galß1-4Glc) and 3-sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine (NeuAc2-3Galß1-4GlcNAc). The structures of the products were established by methylation and1H-500 MHz NMR spectroscopy. In Sda serological tests the product formed with 3-sialyl-N-acetyllactosamine was highly active whereas that formed with 3-sialyllactose had only weak activity.  相似文献

Weevil (Curculionidae, Coleoptera) species richness and composition were investigated and compared among larch [Larix kaempferi (Lamb.) Carriére] plantations, secondary forests, and old-growth forests in the central mountainous region of Japan. In addition, to assess the effects of forest-management practices, namely thinning and long-rotation logging schedules (long rotation), the weevil assemblages of recently thinned middle-aged and long-rotated larch plantations were compared with those of middle-aged larch plantations. Malaise traps were set in 44 stands of these forest types, and weevils were separated and identified. Several environmental factors other than forest type were also examined. Weevil species richness and diversity indices [Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H) and Simpsons index of diversity (D)] were higher in the secondary forest than in the larch plantation. Because of its wide distribution and higher weevil species richness, the secondary forest contributed to maintaining weevil diversity in this region. Old-growth forest had higher diversity indices (H and D) than did the larch plantation. The secondary forest had the highest number of species in total. Though the number of individuals was the highest in larch plantation, species richness, H and D of the plantation were generally low. Weevil community structure and species composition differed among the three forest types, but the difference in weevil composition between the larch plantation and the other two forest types was the largest. Forest type is probably the most important factor for determining the differences in weevil assemblage, and further, both dominant tree type (coniferous trees versus broad-leaved trees) and the number of mature tree species seem to be important factors for weevil species composition. Among forest management practices, long rotation caused diversity indices (H and D) to increase while thinning appeared to cause only minor changes in the weevil assemblages. Because species richness and species composition of Curculionidae well reflected the differences in forest types and some other environmental factors investigated, this family seems suitable for diversity research in forests. Further research on biodiversity with the use of this family should, therefore, be expected.  相似文献

Climbers are considered heliophytes. They are copious at the margins of forests and natural and man-made clearings. The objective of this paper was to study the initial growth of seedlings maintained under full sunlight and shaded conditions (under a vegetation canopy). The species studied were: Aristolochia galeata, Arrabidea triplinervia, Bidens brasiliensis, Canavalia parviflora, Chamissoa altissima, Cissus sicyoides, Dalechampia pentaphylla, Dicella bracteosa, Dioscorea sp., Gouania virgata, Mascagnia anisopetala, Mutisia coccinea, Oxypetalum molle, Pithecoctenium crucigerum, Rynchosia phaseoloides, Serjania multiflora and Solanum flaccidum. The initial growth of the seedlings was followed under two conditions: at the margin and under the canopy of a mesophyllous tropical forest (22° 4955S–47° 0633W). The climbers showed high rates of growth in sunlight when compared to those under canopy. Most of the species presented higher growth of the shoot than roots but in general no significative differences between root/shoot were found in both treatments. Bidens, Cissus, Mutisia and Pithecoctenium showed a very high mortality rate under canopy but, most of the studied species survived under deep shaded forest for approximately 100 days.  相似文献

Summary Soluble lead salts and a number of lead-containing minerals catalyze the formation of oligonucleotides from nucleoside 5-phosphorimidazolides. The effectiveness of lead compounds correlates strongly with their solubility. Under optimal conditions we were able to obtain 18% of pentamer and higher oligomers from ImpA. To evaluate alpha diversities, various variables such as density, cover, volume, and weight have been used. However, density is often a distinct variable from the remaining three. To clarify differences in diversity measured by those two kinds of variables, the data collected in fourteen 2×5 m permanently-marked plots on Mount Usu, Japan, which erupted during 1977 and 1978 in growing seasons from 1983 to 1989 was analyzed, using Shannon's species diversity (H) that is represented as a result of combination of species richness and evenness (J). H and J were evaluated by density (density H and J) and cover (cover H and J). Cover H and J were significantly lower than density H and J, indicating that cover H has different characteristics from density H. Those differences are due to differences in evenness, because species richness is the same. The rank orders of species density are different from those of cover. The predominance of a few perennial herbs greatly decreases cover evenness, while seedling establishment success influences density evenness. Therefore, I propose that, during the early stages of succession on harsh environments such as volcanoes, density diversity represents seedling establishment success rate while cover diversity expresses vegetative reproduction success rate.  相似文献

Summary Three independent isolates ofChlamydomonas, selected for caffeine resistance, were found to arrest in G1 phase, as determined by quantitative fluorescence measurements of DNA, when grown at a non-permissive temperature. This cell cycle arrest correlated with lowered levels of cAMP and of adenylate cyclase activity. The arrested cells could be rescued by added cAMP but not AMP, hence the defect was not one of general purine metabolism. Back-crosses to wild type revealed that the phenotypes observed result from a combination of three separable mutations. It is clear that the mutations define functions that are more stringently required for cell division than for growth since the mutant strains are able to grow up to fifteen times normal size while blocked at the non-permissive temperature. From June 1994 to October 1995, I conducted a study of the feeding ecology of one group of black-headed uacaris (Cacajao melanocephalus melanocephalus) in Pico da Neblina National Park, Brazil, near the Venezuelan border (01°10N to 00°26S, 65°03W to 66°52W). Of a total of 429 feeding records, 89% corresponded to fruits from which black-headed uacaris ate ripe and unripe seeds, mesocarps and arils. Seeds were the single most important food item year-around, corresponding to 81% of the feeding records for fruits. Black-headed uacaris used 120 different plant species in 32 families as food. The 3 most important plant species in their diet, Micrandra spruceana, Eperua leucantha, and Hevea braziliensis (all trees), accounted for 38% of the feeding records for fruits. These species produced fruits that were protected by very hard green husks, were barochorous, did not have fleshy mesocarps, and were slow to mature, thus being available as unripe fruits for long periods. The second and third most important species in the diet of black uacaris, Eperua leucantha and Hevea braziliensis, were dominant in the forest: approximately 30% of trees 10 cm dbh sampled in a 2-ha botanical transect at the study site. I discuss the formation of large social groups of black-headed uacaris in Pico da Neblina National Park in light of the peculiar floristic composition of the study site.  相似文献

Summary Suspensions of endocrine pancreas cells were prepared by shaking collagenase-isolated rat islets of Langerhans in calcium-free buffer. When incubated with 1.0 mM substrate at pH 7.4, the cells split,P i from 5-AMP at a rate of 87 nmol/h per g DNA, and from-glycerophosphate at a rate of 25 nmol/h per g DNAK m for 5 AMP was about 54 M. Adenosine or theophylline inhibited the 5-AMP hydrolysis. Homogenization of the cells increased the activity toward 5-AMP by 23% and that toward-glycerophosphate by 115%. Injecting rats with cortisone had no effect on the 5-AMP hydrolysis by whole cells but significantly increased the activity in cell homogenates; the intracellular activity toward 5-AMP was more than doubled by the cortisone treatment. Staining whole islet cells for 5-AMP-splitting activity resulted in a demarcation of the cell periphery in control rats. Cells from cortisone-treated rats showed heavier deposits of reaction product, and their cell periphery did not stand out as clearly. It is suggested that 5-nucleotidase is largely an ectoenzyme in normal rat islet cells. The cells also contain an as yet unidentified intracellular phosphatase that seems to be solely responsible for the increased hydrolysis of 5-AMP in cortisone-treated rats.  相似文献

Summary The community structure of the Mota-Magra forest block (24°35N L and 75 49E L), 14 km east of Udaipur town is described. The area supports forest of mixed dry deciduous nature in which Boswellia serrata, Lannea coromandelica and various species of Acacia are dominant tree species. The protected stand has been found to be richer in respect of tree density and basal cover. In the protected stand the basal cover of tree species has been found to increase from hill base to hill top. The northern and eastern aspects were found to be richer than the southern and western aspects respectively. The possible causes responsible for these differences have been discussed. Observation on the maturity index of the community at each site, constance class and A/F ratio of the perennial species have been presented.Nomenclature follows that in present use at the Herbarium of the Botanical Survey of India, Dehradun.Our sincere thanks are due to Shri A. Summary Neutral and ionic ether glycerolipids, especially alkylacylglycerophosphocholines and 1-alkenylacylglycerophosphocholines, are formed from exogenous 1-O-alkylglycerols, 1-O-(1-alkenyl)glycerols or 2-O-alkylglycerols by photomixotrophic cell suspension cultures of rape (Brassica napus). Best yields of ether glycerolipids were obtained by incubating rape cells with optically active 1-O-alkyl-sn-glycerols. Racemic or symmetric alkylglycerols are also utilized by rape cell suspension cultures for the biosynthesis of optically active ionic ether glycerolipids. In contrast, 3-O-hexadecyl-sn-glycerol is not incorporated into ether glycerophospholipids of rape cells. Incorporation of the substrates into ionic ether lipids is dependent on chain length (C14>C16>C18) and degree of unsaturation (C18:1C18:0) of alkyl chains.Stereochemically uniform 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines and 2-O-alkyl-1-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines with defined alkyl moieties can be prepared from exogenous alkylglycerols. This method recommends itself especially for the preparation of 1-O-(1-alkenyl)-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines (choline plasmalogens) from 1-O-(1-alkenyl)-sn-glycerols. Ether glycerophospholipids with physiological activity, such as 1-O-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines (platelet activating factor, PAF) and 1-O-alkyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines (lyso PAF), were synthesized from 1-O-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholines formed by cell suspension cultures of rape.  相似文献

Concern about colonization of marshesby plant species such as Phragmites australisand Lythrum salicariahas highlighted the needfor management strategies. However, there is a lack ofinformation in the literature on which to base thesedecisions. This study compares the alpha diversity ofmarshes to assess the impact of invasion by Phragmitesand Lythrum. Species occurrence andstem density were measured in marshes dominated by Phragmites, Lythrum, Typhaspp., or otherherbaceous perennials in the Charles River watershedin eastern Massachusetts, USA, and species richness,Shannon's H, Simpson's reciprocal (1/D), and Pielou'sJ were compared among six community types. The threediversity indices had significantly higher values forTypha-Lythrummarshes than for any of the othermarsh types (Tukey test, p< 0.05), with mean values(± s.d.) of H = 2.00 ± 0.74, 1/D = 3.51± 1.68 and J = 0.69 ± 0.1. Marshes dominatedby Phragmiteshad the lowest diversity, with H= 0 and D = 1, i.e. they were monospecific. Typhadominated marshes had the second lowest values,with H = 0.17 ± 0.05, 1/D = 1.05 ± 0.01, andJ = 0.11 ± 0.03. These results support the ideathat a reduction in diversity can be expected inmarshes colonized by Phragmites.
