This paper presents a new and efficient method to calculate the line-of-action of a muscle as it wraps over bones and other tissues on its way from origin to insertion. The muscle is assumed to be a one-dimensional, massless, taut string, and the surfaces of bones that the muscle may wrap around are approximated by cross-sectional boundaries obtained by slicing geometrical models of bones. Each cross-sectional boundary is approximated by a series of connected line segments. Thus, the muscle path to be calculated is piecewise linear with vertices being the contact points on the cross-sectional boundaries of the bones. Any level of geometric accuracy can be obtained by increasing the number of cross sections and the number of line segments in each cross section. The algorithm is computationally efficient even for large numbers of cross sections. Received: 9 July 2001 / Accepted in revised form: 11 March 2002  相似文献

AimWe sought to improve error detection ability during volume modulated arc therapy (VMAT) by dividing and evaluating the treatment plan.BackgroundVMAT involves moving a beam source delivering radiation to tumor tissue through an arc, which significantly decreases treatment time. Treatment planning for VMAT involves many parameters. Quality assurance before treatment is a major focus of research.Materials and methodsWe used an established VMAT prostate treatment plan and divided it into 12° × 30° sections. In all the sections, only image data that generated errors in one segment and those that were integrally acquired were evaluated by a gamma analysis. This was done with five different patient plans.ResultsThe integrated image data resulting from errors in each section was 100% (tolerance 0.5 mm/0.5%) in the gamma analysis result in all image data. Division of the treatment plans produced a shift in the mean value of each gamma analysis in the cranial, left, and ventral directions of 94.59%, 98.83%, 96.58%, and the discrimination ability improved.ConclusionThe error discrimination ability was improved by dividing and verifying the portal imaging.  相似文献

PurposeTo develop a particle transport code to compute w-values and stopping power of swift ions in liquid water and gases of interest for reference dosimetry in hadrontherapy. To analyze the relevance of inelastic and post-collisional processes considered.MethodsThe Monte Carlo code MDM was extended to the case of swift ion impact on liquid water (MDM-Ion). Relativistic corrections in the inelastic cross sections and the post-collisional Auger emission were considered. The effects of introducing different electronic excitation cross sections were also studied.ResultsThe stopping power of swift ions on liquid water, calculated with MDM-Ion, are in excellent agreement with recommended data. The w-values show a strong dependence on the electronic excitation cross sections and on the Auger electron emission. Comparisons with other Monte Carlo codes show the relevance of both the processes considered and of the cross sections employed. W and w-values for swift electron, proton, and carbon ions calculated with the MDM and MDM-Ion codes are in very close agreement with each other and with the 20.8 eV experimental value.ConclusionWe found that w-values in liquid water are independent of ion charge and energy, as assumed in reference dosimetry for hadrontherapy from sparse experimental results for electron and ion impact on gases. Excitation cross sections and Auger emission included in Monte Carlo codes are critical in w-values calculations. The computation of this physical parameter should be used as a benchmark for micro-dosimetry investigations, to assess the reliability of the cross sections employed.  相似文献

AimIn measuring exit fluences, there are several sources of deviations which include the changes in the entrance fluence, changes in the detector response and patient orientation or geometry. The purpose of this work is to quantify these sources of errors.BackgroundThe use of the volumetric modulated arc therapy treatment with the help of image guidance in radiotherapy results in high accuracy of delivering complex dose distributions while sparing critical organs. The transit dosimetry has the potential of Verifying dose delivery by the linac, Multileaf collimator positional accuracy and the calculation of dose to a patient or phantom.Materials and methodsThe quantification of errors caused by a machine delivery is done by comparing static and arc picket fence test for 30 days. A RapidArc plan, created for the pelvis site was delivered without and with Rando phantom and exit portal images were acquired. The day to day dose variation were analysed by comparing the daily exit dose images during the course of treatment. The gamma criterion used for analysis is 3% dose difference and 3 mm distance to agreement with a threshold of 10% of maximum dose.ResultsThe maximum standard deviation for the static and arc picket fence test fields were 0.19 CU and 1.3 CU, respectively. The delivery of the RapidArc plans without a phantom shows the maximum standard deviation of 1.85 CU and the maximum gamma value of 0.59. The maximum gamma value for the RapidArc plan delivered with the phantom was found to be 1.2. The largest observed fluence deviation during the delivery to patient was 5.7% and the maximum standard deviation was 4.1 CU.ConclusionIt is found from this study that the variation due to patient anatomy and interfraction organ motion is significant.  相似文献

PurposeTo propose a geometrical margin for definition of the vaginal cuff PTV using only CT images of the full bladder (CTfull) in postoperative cervical cancer patients.MethodsTwenty-nine operated cervical cancer patients underwent volumetric arc therapy with a bladder filling protocol. This study assessed bladder filling using a portable bladder scanner and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) during the entire treatment period. The measured bladder volumes with a BladderScan® were compared with the delineated volume on CBCT. Titanium clips in the vaginal cuff were analysed to assess geometrical uncertainty and the influence of rectal and bladder volume changes.ResultsBladderScan® showed good agreement with the delineated volume (R = 0.80). The volume changes in the bladder have a greater influence on the clip displacements than in the rectum. The 95th percentile of uncertainty of the clips in reference to CTfull in the right-left (RL), the superoinferior (SI), and the anteroposterior (AP) was 0.32, 0.65, and 1.15 cm, respectively. From this result and intra-fractional movements of the vaginal cuff reported by Haripotepornkul, a new geometrical margin was proposed for definition of the vaginal cuff planning target volume (PTV): 0.5, 0.9, and 1.4 cm in the RL, SI, and AP directions, respectively.ConclusionsA new geometrical margin was proposed for definition of the vaginal cuff PTV based on CTfull, which will be needless of empty bladder at the planning CT scan. This method allows patients to reduce the burden and efficient routine CT scans can be improved.  相似文献

Purpose

Within the field of life cycle assessment (LCA), simplifications are a response to the practical restrictions in the context of a study. In the 1990s, simplifications were part of a debate on streamlining within LCA. Since then, many studies have been published on simplifying LCA but with little attention to systematise the approaches available. Also, despite being pervasive during the making of LCA studies, simplifications remain often invisible in the final results. This paper therefore reviews the literature on simplification in LCA in order to systematise the approaches found today.

Methods

A review of the LCA simplification literature was conducted. The systematic search and selection process led to a sample of 166 publications. During the review phase, the conceptual contributions to the simplification discourse were evaluated. A dataset of 163 entries was created, listing the conceptual contributions to the simplification debate. An empirically grounded analysis led to the generative development of a systematisation of simplifications according to their underlying simplifying logic.

Results and discussion

Five simplifying logics were identified: exclusion, inventory data substitution, qualitative expert judgment, standardisation and automation. Together, these simplifying logics inform 13 simplification strategies. The identified logics represent approaches to handle the complexities of product systems and expectations of the users of LCA results with the resources available to the analyst. Each simplification strategy is discussed with regard to its main applications and challenges.

Conclusions

This paper provides a first systematisation of the different simplification logics frequently applied in LCA since the original streamlining discussion. The presented terminology can help making communication about simplification more explicit and transparent, thus important for the credibility of LCA. Despite the pervasiveness of simplification in LCA, there is a relative lack of research on simplification per se, making further research describing simplification as a practice and analysing simplifications methodologically desirable.

PurposeTo study the sensitivity of an ArcCHECK dosimeter in detecting delivery errors during the delivery of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT).MethodsThree types of errors in Multi Leaf Collimator (MLC) position and dose delivery were simulated separately in the delivery of five prostate and five head and neck (H&N) VMAT plans: (i) Gantry independent: a systematic shift in MLC position and variation in output to the whole arc; (ii) Gantry dependent: sag in MLC position and output variation as a function of gantry angle; (iii) Control point specific MLC and output errors introduced to only a specific number of Control Points (CP). The difference in local and global gamma (γ) pass rate between the no-error and error-simulated measurements with 2%/2 mm and 3%/3 mm tolerances was calculated to assess the sensitivity of ArcCHECK. The clinical impact of these errors was also calculated.ResultsArcCHECK was able to detect a minimum 3 mm MLC error and 3% output error for Gantry independent errors using either local or global gamma with 2%/2 mm tolerance. For the Gantry dependent error scenario a minimum 3 mm MLC error and 3% dose error was identifiable by ArcCHECK using either global or local gamma with 2%/2 mm tolerance. In errors introduced to specific CPs a MLC error of 10 mm and dose error of 100% introduced to 4CPs were detected by ArcCHECK.ConclusionArcCHECK used with either local or global gamma analysis and 2%/2 mm criteria can be confidently used in the clinic to detect errors above the stated error values.  相似文献

PurposeTextural features calculated from various segmental fluences of volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) plans were optimized to enhance its performance to predict plan delivery accuracy.MethodsTwenty prostate and twenty head and neck VMAT plans were selected retrospectively. Fluences were generated for each VMAT plan by summations of segments at sequential groups of control points. The numbers of summed segments were 5, 10, 20, 45, 90, 178 and 356. For each fluence, we investigated 6 textural features: angular second moment, inverse difference moment, contrast, variance, correlation and entropy (particular displacement distances, d = 1, 5 and 10). Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (rs) were calculated between each textural feature and several different measures of VMAT delivery accuracy.ResultsThe values of rs of contrast (d = 10) with 10 segments to both global and local gamma passing rates with 2%/2 mm were 0.666 (p <0.001) and 0.573 (p <0.001), respectively. It showed rs values of −0.895 (p <0.001) and 0.727 (p <0.001) to multi-leaf collimator positional errors and gantry angle errors during delivery, respectively. The number of statistically significant rs values (p <0.05) to the changes in dose–volumetric parameters during delivery was 14 among a total of 35 tested parameters.ConclusionsContrast (d = 10) with 10 segments showed higher correlations to the VMAT delivery accuracy than did the conventional modulation indices.  相似文献

BackgroundIn a dental implant/bone system, the design factors affect the value and distributions of stress and deformations that plays a pivotal role on the stability, durability and lifespan of the implant/bone system.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to compare the influence of different abutment designs on the biomechanical behavior of one-piece zirconia dental implants and their surrounding bone tissues using three-dimensional finite element analysis.MethodsA three-dimensional geometrical model of a zirconia dental implant and its surrounding bone tissue were created. The occlusal loading force applied to the prosthetic abutments was a combination of 114.6 N in the axial direction, 17.1 N in the lingual direction and 23.4 N toward the mesial direction where these components represent masticatory force of 118.2 N in the angle of approximately 75° to the occlusal plane.ResultsThe system included implant abutment Model 01 showed a decrease of 9.58%, 9.92% and 3.62% at least in the average value of maximum von Mises stress compared to Model 02, Model 03 and Model 04 respectively. The results also showed that the system included implant abutment Model 01 decreases the average value of maximum deformation of 16.96%, 7.17% and 9.47% at least compared to Model 02, Model 03 and Model 04 respectively.ConclusionThe one-piece zirconia dental implant abutment Model 01 presents a better biomechanical behavior in the peri-implant bone than others. It can efficiently distribute the applied load and present more homogeneous behavior of stress distribution and has less deformation than others, which will enhance the stability of implant/bone system and prolong its lifespan.  相似文献

Unconventional modes for STEM imaging of biological structures   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this paper recent developments are discussed in instrumentation and methodology associated with scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEM), which are of great potential interest for solving structural and chemical problems in biological specimens. After describing the main features of the instrument, an attempt is made to define which type of signal acquisition and processing is best suited to obtain a given type of information. Starting with a definition of cross sections of interest, a discussion follows of methods using angular selection, energy selection of the transmitted beam, and several ways of signal mixing. More specific attention is devoted to two main modes of processing signals: ratio contrast, which emphasizes slight changes in scattering factors, rather independent of thickness variations; and elemental mapping, which provides semi-quantitative information on the distribution of low Z elements of great significance in biological specimens. Data relevant to typical biological objects are presented and discussed; they allow for the definition of the capabilities and limitations of these methods. These unconventional imaging modes define a new attitude for improving the efficiency of this modern generation of electron microscopes.  相似文献

PurposeEPID dosimetry in the Unity MR-Linac system allows for reconstruction of absolute dose distributions within the patient geometry. Dose reconstruction is accurate for the parts of the beam arriving at the EPID through the MRI central unattenuated region, free of gradient coils, resulting in a maximum field size of ~10 × 22 cm2 at isocentre. The purpose of this study is to develop a Deep Learning-based method to improve the accuracy of 2D EPID reconstructed dose distributions outside this central region, accounting for the effects of the extra attenuation and scatter.MethodsA U-Net was trained to correct EPID dose images calculated at the isocenter inside a cylindrical phantom using the corresponding TPS dose images as ground truth for training. The model was evaluated using a 5-fold cross validation procedure. The clinical validity of the U-Net corrected dose images (the so-called DEEPID dose images) was assessed with in vivo verification data of 45 large rectum IMRT fields. The sensitivity of DEEPID to leaf bank position errors (±1.5 mm) and ±5% MU delivery errors was also tested.ResultsCompared to the TPS, in vivo 2D DEEPID dose images showed an average γ-pass rate of 90.2% (72.6%–99.4%) outside the central unattenuated region. Without DEEPID correction, this number was 44.5% (4.0%–78.4%). DEEPID correctly detected the introduced delivery errors.ConclusionsDEEPID allows for accurate dose reconstruction using the entire EPID image, thus enabling dosimetric verification for field sizes up to ~19 × 22 cm2 at isocentre. The method can be used to detect clinically relevant errors.  相似文献

Measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) by DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) is generally considered to be the clinical golden standard technique to diagnose osteoporosis. However, BMD alone is only a moderate predictor of fracture risk. Finite element analyses of bone mechanics can contribute to a more accurate prediction of fracture risk. In this study, we applied a method to estimate the 3D geometrical shape of bone based on a 2D BMD image and a femur shape template. Proximal femurs of eighteen human cadavers were imaged with computed tomography (CT) and divided into two groups. Image data from the first group (N = 9) were applied to create a shape template by using the general Procrustes analysis and thin plate splines. This template was then applied to estimate the shape of the femurs in the second group (N = 9), using the 2D BMD image projected from the CT image, and the geometrical errors of the shape estimation method were evaluated. Finally, finite element analysis with stance loading condition was conducted based on the original CT and the estimated geometrical shape to evaluate the effect of the geometrical errors on the outcome of the simulations. The volumetric errors induced by the shape estimation method itself were low (<0.6%). Increasing the number of bone specimens used for the template decreased the geometrical errors. When nine bones were used for the template, the mean distance difference (±SD) between the estimated and the CT shape surfaces was 1.2 ± 0.3 mm, indicating that the method was feasible for estimating the shape of the proximal femur. Small errors in geometry led systematically to larger errors in the mechanical simulations. The method could provide more information of the mechanical characteristics of bone based on 2D BMD radiography and could ultimately lead to more sensitive diagnosis of osteoporosis.  相似文献

The cochlea is an important auditory organ in the inner ear. In most mammals, it is coiled as a spiral. Whether this specific shape influences hearing is still an open problem. By employing a three-dimensional fluid model of the cochlea with an idealized geometry, the influence of the spiral geometry of the cochlea is examined. We obtain solutions of the model through a conformal transformation in a long-wave approximation. Our results show that the net pressure acting on the basilar membrane is not uniform along its spanwise direction. Also, it is shown that the location of the maximum of the spanwise pressure difference in the axial direction has a mode dependence. In the simplest pattern, the present result is consistent with the previous theory based on the Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin-like approximation (Manoussaki et al., Phys Rev Lett 96:088701, 2006). In this mode, the pressure difference in the spanwise direction is a monotonic function of the distance from the apex and the normal velocity across the channel width is zero. Thus, in the lowest-order approximation, we can neglect the existence of the Reissner’s membrane in the upper channel. However, higher responsive modes show different behavior and, thus, the real maximum is expected to be located not exactly at the apex but at a position determined by the spiral geometry of the cochlea and the width of the cochlear duct. In these modes, the spanwise normal velocities are not zero. Thus, it indicates that one should take into account the detailed geometry of the cochlear duct for a more quantitative result. The present result clearly demonstrates that the spiral geometry and the geometry of the cochlear duct play decisive roles in distributing the wave energy.  相似文献

PurposeMR might be well suited to obtain reproducible and accurate measures of fat tissues in infants. This study evaluates MR-measurements of adipose tissue in young infants in vitro and in vivo.ResultsIn vitro accuracy errors depended on the chosen segmentation procedure, ranging from 5.4% to 76%, while the sequence showed no significant influence. Artificial breathing increased the minimal accuracy error to 9.1%. In vivo reproducibility errors for total fat volume of the sleeping infants ranged from 2.6% to 3.4%. Neither segmentation nor sequence significantly influenced reproducibility.ConclusionWith both cartesian and PROPELLER sequences an accurate and reproducible measure of body fat was achieved. Adequate segmentation was mandatory for high accuracy.  相似文献

In this article, the results of numerical simulations using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a comparison with experiments performed with phase Doppler anemometry are presented. The simulations and experiments were conducted in a realistic model of the human airways, which comprised the throat, trachea and tracheobronchial tree up to the fourth generation. A full inspiration/expiration breathing cycle was used with tidal volumes 0.5 and 1 L, which correspond to a sedentary regime and deep breath, respectively. The length of the entire breathing cycle was 4 s, with inspiration and expiration each lasting 2 s. As a boundary condition for the CFD simulations, experimentally obtained flow rate distribution in 10 terminal airways was used with zero pressure resistance at the throat inlet. CCM+ CFD code (Adapco) was used with an SST k-\(\upomega \) low-Reynolds Number RANS model. The total number of polyhedral control volumes was 2.6 million with a time step of 0.001 s. Comparisons were made at several points in eight cross sections selected according to experiments in the trachea and the left and right bronchi. The results agree well with experiments involving the oscillation (temporal relocation) of flow structures in the majority of the cross sections and individual local positions. Velocity field simulation in several cross sections shows a very unstable flow field, which originates in the tracheal laryngeal jet and propagates far downstream with the formation of separation zones in both left and right airways. The RANS simulation agrees with the experiments in almost all the cross sections and shows unstable local flow structures and a quantitatively acceptable solution for the time-averaged flow field.  相似文献

Purpose

Two life cycle assessment (LCA) studies comparing a new low-particulate-matter-emission disc brake and a reference disc brake were presented. The purpose was to identify the difference in potential environmental impacts due to a material change in the new disc brake parts. Additionally, the validity was investigated for the simplification method of omitting identical parts in comparative LCA. This was done by comparing the results between the simplified and the full LCA model.

Methods

The two disc brakes, new disc brake and reference disc brake, were assessed according to the LCA ISO standards. The ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (hierarchist) impact assessment method was chosen. Simplifying a comparative LCA is possible, all identical parts can be omitted, and only the ones that differ need to be assessed. In this paper, this simplification was called comparative LCA with an omission of identical parts.

Results and discussion

The comparative impacts were analysed over seventeen impact categories. The new disc brake alternative used more resources during the manufacture of one disc compared to the reference disc brake alternative. The shorter life length of the reference disc demanded a higher number of spare part discs to fulfil the same functional unit, but this impact was reduced due to material recycling. The new disc brake impacts were connected primarily to the coating and secondly to the pad manufacture and materials. The validity of the simplification method was investigated by comparing the results of the two LCA models. The impact differences were identical independent of the LCA model, and the same significant impact categories could be identified. Hence, the purpose of the study could be fulfilled, and the simplification was valid.

Conclusions

Both LCA models, simplified and full, revealed that the new disc brake had limited environmental advantages. The omission of identical parts made it more challenging to determine if an impact was significant or insignificant. The simplification seemed to be reasonable.
