Scrotal circumference (SC) and body weight (BW) measurements were obtained from 122 crossbred (Saanen x Loca; Jumnapari x Local) bucks, ranging in age from 3 to 28 months. Spermatogenesis and semeniferous tubule diameters were studied from testicular biopsies in 24 bucks. The results showed that SC increased curvilinearly and was significantly correlated with age (P < 0.05). Scrotal circumference correlated more significantly with BW (P < 0.001). Spermatogenesis was completed at 6-7 months with a sudden increase in tubular diameter at the same time. Since SC is an indirect measurement of testicular size, a marked increase in testicular size indicated the onset of active spermatogenesis and, hence, the possibility of using bucks for breeding at an earlier age than normally recommended. Further, SC norms obtained in this study may become useful in the evaluation of bucks for breeding soundness.  相似文献

Semen characteristics were studied in 6 wild-born chimpanzees with dental ages ranging approximately from 6 to 12 years. The animals formed 2 groups, early pubertal (EP, N = 3, 6-9 years) and late pubertal (LP, N = 3, 11-12 years). Mean body weight, testicular volume and serum androgen concentration were significantly lower in Group EP (32.2 +/- 1.6 kg, 34.0 +/- 7.7 cm3, 2.1 +/- 0.1 ng/ml) than in Group LP (55.7 +/- 5.7 kg, P less than 0.01; 100.5 +/- 11.9 cm3, P less than 0.01; 3.6 +/- 0.7 ng/ml, P less than 0.05). Ejaculates were obtained by masturbation in all subjects. The mean ejaculate volume was lower in Group EP (0.56 +/- 0.20 ml) than in Group LP (3.77 +/- 0.73 ml, P less than 0.01). In Group EP, 2 animals were azoospermic while the third produced semen with means of 57.1 x 10(6) spermatozoa per ml, 20% motility and 40% vitality. These values were low when compared with the mean values of Group LP (376 x 10(6) spermatozoa per ml, 67% motility and 78% vitality). Mean total sperm count was correlated with testicular volume (r = 0.84) and serum androgen concentration (r = 0.96). The mean concentrations of L-carnitine, fructose, citrate and acid phosphatase for the two groups were not significantly different; but, related to the differences in ejaculate volumes, their total amounts in total ejaculate were lower in Group EP than in Group LP. These results suggest that, in chimpanzees, mechanisms of seminal plasma production and ejaculation are functional early in the reproductive life and that the emission of spermatozoa occurs later.  相似文献

We examined the relationship between peripheral/hepatic insulin sensitivity and abdominal superficial/deep subcutaneous fat (SSF/DSF) and intra-abdominal visceral fat (VF) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Sixty-two T2DM patients (36 males and 26 females, age = 55 +/- 3 yr, body mass index = 30 +/- 1 kg/m2) underwent a two-step euglycemic insulin clamp (40 and 160 mU. m(-2). min(-1)) with [3-3H]glucose. SSF, DSF, and VF areas were quantitated with magnetic resonance imaging at the L(4-5) level. Basal endogenous glucose production (EGP), hepatic insulin resistance index (basal EGP x FPI), and total glucose disposal (TGD) during the first and second insulin clamp steps were similar in male and female subjects. VF (159 +/- 9 vs. 143 +/- 9 cm2) and DSF (199 +/- 14 vs. 200 +/- 15 cm(2)) were not different in male and female subjects. SSF (104 +/- 8 vs. 223 +/- 15 cm2) was greater (P < 0.0001) in female vs. male subjects despite similar body mass index (31 +/- 1 vs. 30 +/- 1 kg/m2) and total body fat mass (31 +/- 2 vs. 33 +/- 2 kg). In male T2DM, TGD during the first insulin clamp step (1st TGD) correlated inversely with VF (r = -0.45, P < 0.01), DSF (r = -0.46, P < 0.01), and SSF (r = -0.39, P < 0.05). In males, VF (r = 0.37, P < 0.05), DSF (r = 0.49, P < 0.01), and SSF (r = 0.33, P < 0.05) were correlated positively with hepatic insulin resistance. In females, the first TGD (r = -0.45, P < 0.05) and hepatic insulin resistance (r = 0.49, P < 0.05) correlated with VF but not with DSF, SSF, or total subcutaneous fat area. We conclude that visceral adiposity is associated with both peripheral and hepatic insulin resistance, independent of gender, in T2DM. In male but not female T2DM, deep subcutaneous adipose tissue also is associated with peripheral and hepatic insulin resistance.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Lean body mass is a better determinant of thyroid size than body weight as demonstrated in a previous crosssectional study. We now evaluated if intra-individual changes in body composition and especially changes in lean body mass, due to physical training, could give rise to changes in thyroid volume. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We investigated 17 freshmen (group 1) before and after six months of competition rowing; controls (group II) were 19 senior rowers, already participating in a training program for more than 2 years. RESULTS: In group I body weight (BW; p < 0.01), lean body mass (LBM; p < 0.05), fat weight (FW; p < 0.05), body mass index (BMI; p < 0.01) and thyroid volume (TV; p = 0.08) all decreased; in group II body composition and thyroid volume did not change at all during the 6 months observation period. Whereas serum TSH and T3 did not change, free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations increased slightly in both groups (p < 0.01), presumably caused by the combination of exercise and insufficient energy intake. Taking together all subjects, baseline TV was directly related to BW (r = 0.35, p<0.05), to LBM (r=0.40, p<0.05) and to BMI (r=0.43, p < 0.01) but not to FW (r = - 0.06, NS). The decrease in thyroid volume was related to the decrease in LBM (r = 0.32, p = 0.05), in BW (r = 0.49, p < 0.005), in FW (r = 0.42, p = 0.01) and in BMI (r = 0.53, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: After a six-month period of intensive physical training, changes in thyroid volume correlate directly with changes in body composition.  相似文献

Two groups of three-to four-month-old weaning ram lambs were studied for 20 months, beginning with weaning at between three and four months. Group 1 was comprised of nine ram lambs which were reared under an intensive husbandry system, and given standard nutrition and mineral supplements throughout the study. Group 2 was comprised of nine rams which were reared under the traditional nomadic/extensive management system, in which the only source of feed was the available pasture. The reproductive traits studied include: age, weight and scrotal circumference at puberty and at all corresponding ages up to 23 months, libido and sexual dexterity and semen characteristics at puberty and all corresponding ages. In the intensively managed rams, the average age at puberty was 6.4+/-0.5 mos. The averages of the other parameters at puberty were: body weight (BW), 21.7+/-2.5kg; scrotal circumference (SC), 18.5+/-1.3cm; libido score, 1.7+/-0.7 and sexual dexterity, 1.7:0.8. In the extensively managed rams, the average age at puberty was 7.8+/-0.3 mos. The average values of the various parameters at puberty were: BW, 17.3+/-1.2kg; SC, 15.2+/-1.4cm; libido score, 3.2+/-0.6 and sexual dexterity, 3.2:1.8. The inter- and intra-group variations in all the parameters at puberty and at all corresponding ages were significant. The average morphological sperm cell abnormalities at puberty were: 25.2+/-3.4% and 31.6+/-8.3% for rams reached puberty and at all corresponding ages than the extensively reared flock. Certain factors that influence post-weaning reproductive development and performance are discussed.  相似文献

Stimulation of follicular growth was examined using two different gonadotropin treatments in 10 prepubertal swamp buffalo calves (8 to 12 mo old). Each calf received an ear implant consisting of 3 mg norgestromet and 5 mg estradiol valerate during hormonal treatment. Five calves were additionally administered FSH (24 mg, im) and, 2 mo later, PMSG (3,000 IU). The remaining 5 calves were first treated with PMSG followed by FSH. Ovarian responses to treatments were examined by laparotomy, 72 h after ear implant removal, and by the number of follicles (diameter > or = 0.8 cm) and corpora hemorrhagica present. Ovaries had more significant response to FSH than PMSG treatment (13.9+/-8.6 vs 5.9+/-3.3 follicles; P<0.01). Although the recovery rate tended to be lower for FSH treated (64%) than PMSG-treated (82%) animals, more oocytes/animal were harvested in the PMSG treatment (8.3+/-5.0 vs 4.6+/-3.2, respectively). The immature oocytes (n = 38) were cultured for 24 to 25 h in maturation medium (TCM-199 NaHCO3+10% fetal calf serum [FCS] in 5%CO2 in air at 39 degrees C). Oocyte maturation was assessed after fixation and staining with aceto orcein. The in vitro maturation rate was 52.6% (20/38). This study shows the possibility of harvesting oocytes from prepubertal swamp buffalo calves and maturing the oocyte in vitro.  相似文献

Scrotal circumference as an index of testes size, along with body weight, wither height, heart girth and body condition score were measured fortnightly for 114 Menz ram lambs from weaning (91+/-7 SD days) until puberty, which was defined as age at first collection of an ejaculate with 50 x 10(6) spermatozoa and 10% motility. The animals were maintained on poor (n=28), low (n=29), medium (n=29) or high (n=28) levels of nutrition through grazing and supplementation. Further, half the lambs in each group were drenched for endoparasites. Daily gains in live weight, wither height, heart girth and scrotal circumference were 48.5+/-1.6 g, 0.05+/-0.01 cm, 0.07+/-0.01 cm and 0.07+/-0.03 cm, respectively for the period from weaning to puberty and varied with level of nutrition (P<0.05 to 0.001) but not with drenching or its interaction with nutrition level (P>0.10). Scrotal circumference increased linearly and was strongly correlated with age, body weight, wither height, and heart girth (r = 0.83 to 0.85, P<0.001), and lamb weight could be predicted by the equation: 6.35 + 0.53 scrotal circumference (R(2) = 0.73). Mean age, body weight and condition score at puberty were 288+/-6 days, 19.3+/-0.4 kg and 2.6+/-0.06, respectively, and varied due to season of birth, level of nutrition and weaning weight (P<0.01 to 0.001). The nutrition level also influenced (P<0.001) scrotal circumference at puberty, averaging 21.5+/-0.3 cm. It was concluded that postweaning nutrition management had a strong influence on lamb weight gain, which in turn was related to testicular growth and puberty onset in Menz ram lambs. The suitability of scrotal size measurement as a criterion for early selection of tropical ram lambs is emphasised.  相似文献

One hundred fifty-nine purebred Guzerat (8 to 110 months of age) and sixty Nellore bulls (8-30 months of age) were used in two trials to examine testicular development and consistency, body weight changes, puberty and semen traits. Scrotal circumference measurements and semen collections by electroejaculation were made every 28 d. At both trial locations, bulls were maintained under grazing conditions and fed commercial protein supplements (2 kg/head/day) during the dry season. Age and body weight affected (P<0.01) scrotal circumference in both breeds. Scrotal circumference increased (P<0.01) linearly with age and body weight. However, scrotal circumference tended to reach mature size more rapidly than did body weight in both Guzerat and Nellore bulls. Correlation coefficients between scrotal circumference and semen traits were positive (P<0.01) ranging from 0.49 to 0.73 in the two breeds, but were not significant for testicular consistency in either breed. Scrotal circumference and age at puberty of Guzerat and Nellore bulls averaged 25.6 +/- 2.2 cm at 18.0 +/- 2.0 mo and 23.6 +/- 0.2 cm at 18.5 +/- 2.7 mo, respectively. Nellore bulls were 42 kg lighter than Guzerat at puberty. Testicular consistency was not affected by either age of body weight (P>0.10) in these young bulls. The percentages of abnormal spermatozoa were higher (P<0.01) at 13 to 15 mo of age in Guzerat (11.1%) and Nellore (14.4%) bulls than at 22 to 24 mo (6.7 and 8.0%, respectively). These data indicate that scrotal circumference measurements can be a useful tool for selecting and improving semen traits of young Guzerat and Nellore bulls under tropical grazing conditions.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: A stepwise increment of the GH dose is an approach aimed at avoiding adverse events. We investigated GH sensitivity by studying IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations during the initial phase of GH treatment. METHODS: Our investigation was part of the regular follow-up of prepubertal children with GH deficiency (GHD) (n = 31) and small for gestational age (SGA) (n = 23). Dosage was increased in three steps: one-third at the start, two-thirds after 14 days, and the full dose after 28 days (full dose: GHD = 28 microg/kg body weight (BW)/day; SGA = 60 microg/kg BW/day). Blood samples were taken on days 0, 14 and 28, as well as in conjunction with anthropometrical examinations after 3, 6 and 12 months. IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were measured by means of published in-house RIAs and age-related references were used to calculate standard deviation scores (SDS). Height velocity (cm/year) and Delta HT SDS were taken as growth response parameters. RESULTS: Before GH treatment (GHD vs. SGA; median and p values): age (years) (6.6 vs. 6.0; n.s.), HT SDS (-2.6 vs. -3.2; p < 0.05); GH amount after stepping up (mug/kg BW/day) (28 vs. 60; p < 0.01); BW SDS (-0.5 vs. -2.9; p < 0.01); max. GH stimulated (microg/l) (5.6 vs. 10.8; p < 0.01); IGF-I SDS (-3.5 vs. -1.8; p < 0.01); IGFBP-3 SDS (-2.0 vs. 0.8; p < 0.01). After 1 year of GH therapy: HT velocity (cm/year) (9.8 vs. 9.6; n.s.), Delta HT SDS (0.9 vs. 0.9; n.s.); WT velocity (kg/year) (3.3 vs. 3.5; n.s.). Our results show that changes in growth similar to GHD could be induced in SGA by a dosage that was twice as high as the replacement dose given in GHD. GH dose and HT velocity did not correlate in both groups. IGF-I and IGFBP-3 increased as follows in GHD and SGA during stepping up of the dosage (ng/ml, GHD vs. SGA): at start, 54 vs. 89; at day 14, 78 vs. 132; at day 28, 90 vs. 167; at 3 months, 118 vs. 218. There was the same relationship between dose levels and absolute IGF-I concentrations in both groups. In terms of IGF-I SDS, the dose-response curve in SGA showed a shift to the right in comparison to GHD, thus indicating lower sensitivity to GH. The dynamics of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 differed, as IGFBP-3 peaked earlier (on day 28). In GHD, IGF-I SDS at 3 months was -0.7 vs. +0.9 in SGA. Near-identical levels were found for Delta IGF-I SDS and IGFBP-3 SDS above basal levels for each time-point investigated. First year HT velocity in GHD correlated negatively with basal IGF-I SDS (R(2) = 0.33; p <0.001) and basal IGFBP-3 (R(2) = 0.17; p <0.05) but did not correlate with the IGF-I increment during the 0- to 3-month period. Conversely, first year HT velocity correlated (+) in SGA with the IGF SDS increment during the 0- to 3-month period (R(2) = 0.26; p = <0.05). Height velocity in SGA, however, correlated neither with basal IGF-I and IGFBP-3 nor with the 0- to 3-month increments of IGFBP-3 SDS. CONCLUSIONS: IGFs increase during initial GH therapy, thus raising questions about short-term IGF generation tests. (I) In terms of IGF generation, substantially lower sensitivity to GH was observable in SGA. (II) Higher GH sensitivity during first year catch-up growth is associated with GHD, but in SGA it is attributable to increases in IGF. A wider range of GH dosages needs to be explored in order to gain further insight into the relationship between GH dose, IGF levels, and growth. Monitoring IGFs is a practical means for exploring GH sensitivity during dosage stepping up.  相似文献

The coyote is a seasonally breeding mammal, with most copulations occurring between December and April (depending on location). The objective of this study was to characterize seasonal changes in serum testosterone concentrations, testicular volume, and ejaculate quantity and quality in captive male coyotes. There were seasonal differences in testicular volume, with the greatest volume (20.2+/-5.4cm2), mean+/-S.E.M.) in February, corresponding with peak breeding season. Circulating serum testosterone concentrations peaked (3.31+/-0.9 ng/mL) during January and were positively correlated (P< or =0.001, r=0.413) with testicular volume. Ejaculate volume (1.67+/-0.4 mL) and sperm concentration (549.2 x 10(6)+/-297.7 spermatozoa/mL) both peaked during January and February, consistent with the height of the breeding season. Ejaculate volume and sperm concentrations were positively correlated with testicular size (r=0.679, P< or =0.001 and r=0.499, P< or =0.001, respectively) and with serum testosterone concentrations (r=0.368, P< or =0.01 and r=0.208, P< or =0.05). Progressively motile, viable, and morphologically normal spermatozoa fluctuated seasonally, peaked (90.4+/-4.5, 84.8+/-4.1, and 87.9+/-2.9%) during the breeding season, and then subsequently declined (period of aspermatogenesis). All three of these end points were positively correlated with testicular size (r=0.589, P< or =0.001; r=0.586, P< or =0.001; and r=0.469; P< or =0.001) and serum testosterone (r=0.167, P< or =0.05; r=0.190, P< or =0.05; and r=0.221, P< or =0.01). In conclusion, there were intricate relationships among testosterone concentrations, testicular volume, and the production of both functionally intact and morphologically normal spermatozoa.  相似文献

A study was designed to investigate relationships between testicle size and histological, sperm production and endocrinological traits in yearling beef bulls at the end of performance test. Twenty-five beef bulls, (Hereford, n=16; Angus, n=4; and Charolais, n=5), with scrotal circumference (SC) measurements ranging from 28.5 to 36.0 cm, were used. Just prior to slaughter at 15 mo of age, SC measurements were taken, semen was collected, and a GnRH response test was conducted. Testicles were processed for daily sperm production (DSP), epididymal sperm reserves (ESR), seminiferous epithelial area (SEA), and degree of germinal epithelial loss (DGEL). There were significant positive correlations between SC and testicular weight (P<0.05), DSP/g (P<0.02), and DSP/bull (P<0.01) and ESR (P<0.01); however, the correlation between SC and SEA was not significant (P=0.4). Scrotal circumference was negatively correlated with DGEL (P<0.05). Degree of germinal epithelial loss was also negatively correlated with DSP/g, DSP/bull and ESR (P<0.01). Morphological characteristics of spermatozoa were diversely related to sperm production traits, and the percentage of normal spermatozoa was positively related to SC (P<0.02) and negatively related to DGEL (P<0.001). Gonadotropin releasing hormone stimulation did not reveal evidence of gonadotropin deficiency in any of the bulls. However, peak testosterone levels were lower in bulls with SC below 31 cm (P<0.05) than those with SC measurements above 31 cm.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of treatment with recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST) on the response to superovulatory treatment in swamp buffalo. Estrous cycles of 16 buffalo cows were synchronized by intravaginal administration of progesterone and estradiol benzoate, and the cows were then randomly divided into 2 groups. The rBST-treated group received 250 mg of a sustained-release formula of rBST on Day 4 after progesterone implantation, whereas the control group did not receive rBST. Both groups were then given a superovulatory regimen of twice daily injections of FSH for 3.5 d (total dose of 260 mg, i.m.), between Days 9 and 11 after administration of progesterone. The cows were bred naturally 1 d after the last FSH injection, then 6 d after breeding they were slaughtered, and their reproductive tracts were removed. The numbers of corpora lutea (CL) and follicles were recorded, and embryos were flushed out of the uterine horns. There were no significant differences between the rBST-treated and control cows for the mean numbers (+/- SEM) of CL (6.0 +/- 2.2 vs 4.3 +/- 1.1), follicles (15.9 +/- 4.1 vs 19.8 +/- 2.9), or total embryos recovered per collection (4.5 +/- 1.6 vs 2.3 +/- 1.0). However, there were significant differences between rBST-treated and control cows for the numbers of transferable embryos per collection (3.0 +/- 1.0 vs 0.8 +/- 0.3; P < or = 0.05) and the overall proportion of transferable embryos (75 vs 33%; P < or = 0.01). The results of this study show that pretreatment of swamp buffalo with rBST significantly increases the production of transferable embryos in response to superovulation.  相似文献

Developmental patterns in immunoactive inhibin and FSH concentrations in peripheral blood were determined for Suffolk and DLS (Dorset x Leicester x Suffolk) rams born in January Blood samples were taken every 3 to 4 wk when testes were developing during puberty (5 to 44 wk of age) and redeveloping in early adulthood (17 to 23 months of age). Suffolk lambs had a greater average daily gain (195 vs. 143 g/day, P<0.01), and they developed larger testes (P<0.01) than DLS lambs. Inhibin and FSH concentrations peaked at about the same pubertal (8 wk) and early adult (19 or 20 months) ages in both breeds. Elevations in FSH were greater (P< 0.05) in Suffolk than DLS rams at each stage of development. The pubertal inhibin peak was nearly 70% larger (P<0.01) in DLS than Suffolk rams, and the early adult peak was comparable in rams of both breeds, but much smaller (P<0.01) than the pubertal peak. Nonetheless, inhibin was positively correlated (r=0.48 to 0.57) with FSH in both breeds during each developmental stage. Inhibin and testicular size were negatively correlated in Suffolk (r=-0.74) and DLS (r=-0.86) rams during puberty, and positively correlated in DLS rams (r=0.46) in early adulthood. We conclude that 1) inhibin concentrations are higher in juvenile rams at the time Sertoli cell numbers are being established than in adult rams during testicular recrudescence and 2) rises in FSH concentration participate in regulating corresponding rises in inhibin concentration in both stages of testicular development.  相似文献

The 5K handicap (5KH), designed to eliminate the body weight (BW) and age biases inherent in the 5K run time (RT), yields an adjusted RT (RTadj) that can be compared between runners of different BW and age. As hypothesized in a validation study, however, not all BW bias may be removed, because of the influences of body fatness (BF) and effort (run speed; essentially the inverse as measured by rating of perceived exertion (RPE)). This study's purpose was to determine the effects of BF and RPE on BW bias in the 5KH. For 99 male runners in a regional 5K race (age = 43.9 +/- 12.1 years; BW = 83.4 +/- 12.9 kg), BF was determined via sum of three skinfolds just before the race. RPE, on the 20-point Borg scale, was used to assess overall race effort on race completion. Multiple regression analysis was used to develop a new adjusted RT (NRTadj, the RTadj corrected for BF and RPE), which was computed for each runner and then correlated with BW to determine bias. Indicative of slight bias, BW was correlated with RTadj (r = 0.220, p = 0.029). Both BF (p = 0.00002) and RPE (p = 0.0005) were significant, independent predictors of RTadj. NRTadj was not significantly correlated with BW (r = 0.051, p = 0.61), but BF explained 90%, and RPE explained only 6%, of the remaining BW bias evidenced in the 5KH. The previous finding that the 5KH does not remove all BW bias is apparently accounted for by BF and not RPE. Because no handicap should be awarded for higher BF, this finding suggests that the 5KH, for men, appropriately adjusts for the age and BW vs. RT biases previously noted.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize relationships between anthropometric and isoinertial strength characteristics and bowling speed in junior and senior cricket fast bowlers. Subjects were first-class senior (n = 24; mean +/- SD age = 23.9 +/- 4.8 years, height = 187.4 +/- 4.8 cm, mass = 87.8 +/- 8.4 kg) and junior representative (n = 48; mean +/- SD age = 14.8 +/- 1.3 years, height = 175.7 +/- 9.8 cm, mass = 65.8 +/- 12.9 kg) male fast bowlers. A full anthropometric profile, upper- and lower-body isoinertial strength tests, and peak bowling speed (Vpeak) were assessed on the same day. The senior bowlers had a substantially faster Vpeak (126.7 km.h(-1)) than the juniors (99.6 km.h(-1)), a larger estimated muscle mass (seniors 40.0 +/- 3.9 kg, juniors 28.3 +/- 5.6 kg), and a greater bench press throw and deltoid throw (all p < 0.01). The best multiple predictors of Vpeak for the junior bowlers were the static jump, bench throw, body mass, percentage muscle mass, and height (multiple-correlation r = 0.86). For the senior bowlers, static jump and arm length correlated positively with Vpeak (multiple-correlation r = 0.74). The 1-legged countermovement jump was negatively correlated with Vpeak in both groups. We conclude that differences in Vpeak between junior and senior bowlers relate primarily to body mass and upper-body strength. However, lower body strength is a more important contributor to Vpeak in senior bowlers.  相似文献

Organochlorine pesticides are known to cause disturbances in many physiological functions. The effects of in vivo administered hexachlorobenzene (HCB) on the male testicular function were studied in Meriones unguiculatus. Three groups of sexually mature meriones were orally exposed to 1.6, 4, and 16 mg/kg of body weight in olive oil for 30 days. Morphological and morphometrical estimations were applied to quantify some structural constituents of the testes. Testicular weight was significantly decreased in all treated groups, while no change was noted in seminal vesicle weight. A decrease in the spermatozoid content of the seminiferous tube was noted and appeared correlated with a modification of the process of spermatogenesis. Spermatic activity in HCB-treated animals testes decreased significantly, particularly in the group treated with the higher dose (60+/-3.16% vs. 88+/-4.89% in controls). Plasma testosterone levels were decreased significantly in the groups treated with 4 and 16 mg[HCB]/kg BW (0.48+/-0.08 ng/ml and 0.54+/-0.07 ng/ml) comparatively to controls (1.08+/-0.1 ng/ml) p<0.01.  相似文献

Data on 550 healthy pregnant women, 550 healthy fathers and their healthy term neonates born from singleton pregnancies (37(+0) through 41(+6) week) during a one-year period were reviewed. Maternal mean age was 27.7 +/- 9.37 years, mean pregestational weight 64.0 +/- 9.50 kg, mean gestational weight gain 15.4 +/- 4.33 kg, mean height 169.7 +/- 5.81 cm, and mean gestational age 40.1 +/- 0.95 weeks. Paternal mean age was 31.4 +/- 6.22 years, mean weight 84.6 +/- 10.35 kg, and mean height 182.8 +/- 6.84 cm. Mean birth weight was 3,709.8 +/- 500.48 g and 3,562.5 +/- 443.02 g, and mean birth length 51.5 +/- 1.91 cm and 50.7 +/- 1.62 cm in male and female newborns, respectively, yielding a birth weight greater by 147.3 g and birth length by 0.8 cm in the former. Study variables showed statistically significant correlations: maternal age contributed to the significant correlation between maternal weight and parity, maternal pregestational weight, weight at delivery, gestational weight gain and body height correlated significantly with neonatal birth weight and birth length, gestational age correlated significantly with neonatal weight and length (p = 0.01 all), parity had no major impact (p > 0.05). Paternal height and weight correlated significantly with neonatal birth weight and birth length (p = 0.01). Study results pointed to a significant correlation of maternal pregestational weight, gestational weight gain and body height, and of paternal weight and height with the neonate birth weight and birth length.  相似文献

Observations relating testes size to body weight in growing and adult Polish Merino rams were performed during 3 consecutive years in a flock of 1700 pedigree ewes. October-born ram lambs were measured for testis diameter (TD), scrotal circumference (SC), and body weight (BW) at 100 (January), 150 (March), 180 (April), 240 (June), 365 (October), and 480 d (February) of age. In adult rams (n = 63 to 73 per year) BW and SC were measured in March, May (prior to breeding), August and October. Semen quality was evaluated before each breeding season, and the results of controlled reproductive performance (2 natural services to designated rams) were analyzed. Indices were applied to relate testis size to body weight: TD BW , SC BW and TW BW . Heritability estimates of testes indices in ram lambs at 100 to 240 d and at 480 d of age ranged from 0.21 to 0.36 (SE = 0.067 to 0.090). The objectives of the present study were (i) to establish the mean value of scrotal circumference (SC), sperm motility, concentration and morphology at 13+/-1 months of age for Chianina, Marchigiana, and Romagnola breeds and (ii) to assign Italian beef bulls at the end of a growth performance test to a potential breeder category by applying the guidelines of the Society for Theriogenology in 1993 (SFT93). Of 1,315 bulls, 869 were not given the breeding soundness examination for the following reasons: not passing the growth performance test (n=445), no training for semen collection (n=404), and presence of genital abnormalities (n=20). Testicular length and diameter and SC exhibited a logarithmic trend over time, with an R(2) value of 0.963, 0.979, and 0.978 (P<0.001), respectively. The SC of Romagnola (33.82+/-2.47 cm) was higher than those of Chianina (33.28+/-2.65 cm, P<0.001) and Marchigiana (33.05+/-2.20 cm, P<0.001). Sperm concentration in Romagnola (875.89+/-416.13x10(6)cells/mL) was higher than those in Chianina (751.63+/-444.45 x 10(6)cells/mL, P<0.05) and Marchigiana (862.57+/-421.87 x 10(6) cells/mL). Progressive sperm motility was 61.30+/-11.24%, 62.18+/-11.17%, and 58.48+/-14.40% in Romagnola, Marchigiana, and Chianina, respectively. Total spermatozoal abnormalities were higher in Chianina (23.35+/-15.41%). Sperm concentration was positively related to testicular length (P<0.01), diameter (P<0.001), and SC (P<0.001). Satisfactory breeders presented high sperm motility compared with deferred and unsatisfactory ones, whereas unsatisfactory breeders had a higher number of abnormal spermatozoa. By applying the SFT93 guidelines, we showed that 74.72%, 78.01%, and 80.16% of Chianina, Marchigiana, and Romagnola bulls, respectively, have been classified as satisfactory potential breeders.  相似文献

It is generally accepted that angiogenesis is delayed in aging. To define the effects of age on the neovascular response, polyvinyl alcohol sponges were implanted SC in young (6-8 months old, n=11) and aged (23-25 months old, n=13) mice and sampled at 14 and 19 days. Angiogenic invasion was significantly delayed in aged mice at 14d relative to young at 14d (% area of invasion 9.0 +/- 3.7 vs 19.0 +/- 5.6; p=0.02). Although microvessel morphology and basement membrane composition were similar between the age groups, a significant decrease in capillary density was noted in aged tissues at 14d (7.5 +/- 4.1) and 19d (12.1 +/- 2.8) relative to young at 14d (18.7 +/- 2.3) (p<0.01 A14d vs Y14d). In comparison to young at 14d, the inflammatory response was decreased by 43 +/- 2.9% and 36 +/- 7.8% in aged mice at 14d and 19d, respectively. Tissues of aged mice showed less newly deposited collagen. There was a lack of expression of transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in aged mice at 14d (0.63 +/- 0.3) and 19d (1.14 +/- 0.5) vs young at 14d (1.92 +/- 0.5) (p< or =0.01 A14d vs Y14d for VEGF). However, similar production of VEGF receptor2 was observed. In contrast to young mice, there was significantly increased expression of thrombospondin-2 (TSP-2) in aged mice from 14d (14.6 x 10(3) +/- 7.3 x 10(3)) to 19d (34.9 x 10(3) +/- 17 x 10(3)). We conclude that angiogenesis in aging is not merely delayed, but is altered due to multiple impairments.  相似文献
