Sensitivity to cold and freezing differs between populations within two species of live oaks (Quercus section Virentes Nixon) corresponding to the climates from which they originate. Two populations of Quercus virginiana (originating from North Carolina and north central Florida) and two populations of the sister species, Q. oleoides, (originating from Belize and Costa Rica) were grown under controlled climate regimes simulating tropical and temperate conditions. Three experiments were conducted in order to test for differentiation in cold and freezing tolerance between the two species and between the two populations within each species. In the first experiment, divergences in response to cold were tested for by examining photosystem II (PS II) photosynthetic yield (ΔF/F m′) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) of plants in both growing conditions after short-term exposure to three temperatures (6, 15 and 30°C) under moderate light (400 μmol m−2 s−1). Without cold acclimation (tropical treatment), the North Carolina population showed the highest photosynthetic yield in response to chilling temperatures (6°C). Both ecotypes of both species showed maximum ΔF/F m′ and minimum NPQ at their daytime growth temperatures (30°C and 15°C for the tropical and temperate treatments, respectively). Under the temperate treatment where plants were allowed to acclimate to cold, the Q. virginiana populations showed greater NPQ under chilling temperatures than Q. oleoides populations, suggesting enhanced mechanisms of photoprotective energy dissipation in the more temperate species. In the second and third experiments, inter- and intra-specific differentiation in response to freezing was tested for by examining dark-adapted F v/F m before and after overnight freezing cycles. Without cold acclimation, the extent of post-freezing declines in F v/F m were dependent on the minimum freezing temperature (0, −2, −5 or −10°C) for both populations in both species. The most marked declines in F v/F m occurred after freezing at −10°C, measured 24 h after freezing. These declines were continuous and irreversible over the time period. The North Carolina population, however, which represents the northern range limit of Q. virginiana, showed significantly less decline in F v/F m than the north central Florida population, which in turn showed a lower decline in Fv/F m than the two Q. oleoides populations from Belize and Costa Rica. In contrast, after exposure to three months of chilling temperatures (temperate treatment), the two Q. virginiana populations showed no decline in F v/F m after freezing at −10°C, while the two Q. oleoides populations showed declines in F v/F m reaching 0.2 and 0.1 for Costa Rica and Belize, respectively. Under warm growth conditions, the two species showed different F 0 dynamics directly after freezing. The two Q. oleoides populations showed an initial rise in F 0 30 min after freezing, followed by a subsequent decrease, while the Q. virginiana populations showed a continuous decrease in F 0 after freezing. The North Carolina population of Q. virginiana showed a tendency toward deciduousness in response to winter temperatures, dropping 58% of its leaves over the three month winter period compared to only 6% in the tropical treatment. In contrast, the Florida population dropped 38% of its leaves during winter. The two populations of the tropical Q. oleoides showed no change in leaf drop during the 3-months winter (10% and 12%) relative to their leaf drop over the same timecourse in the tropical treatment. These results indicate important ecotypic differences in sensitivity to freezing and cold stress between the two populations of Q. virginiana as well as between the two species, corresponding to their climates of origin.  相似文献

On a semiarid sand grassland (Festucetum vaginatae) colonised by juniper (Juniperus communis L.) shrubs terricolous lichens and mosses segregate strongly between microhabitats: certain species grow in the open grassland, others almost exclusively in the shade of junipers. The contrasting irradiances of these microhabitats influence much the metabolism of these organisms, and thus affect their small-scale distribution. This was confirmed by determining the efficiency of photochemical energy conversion by measuring chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. In the open grassland maximum photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) declined from the humid spring to the hot and dry summer in all species, and this was caused by an increase in base fluorescence (F0), but not by the decrease in fluorescence maximum (Fm). In summer, mosses and lichens growing in the open grassland generally possessed lower Fv/Fm than cryptogams growing in the shade cast by juniper shrubs. Thus mosses and lichens in the open grassland suffer lasting reduction in photochemical efficiency in summer, which is avoided in the shade of junipers. Juniper shrubs indeed influence the composition and small-scale spatial pattern of sympatric terricolous lichen and moss communities by—among others—providing a shelter against high light in summer.  相似文献

The factors influencing the seasonal dynamics of Daphnia in a thermally stratified lake (Esthwaite Water) are described and related to long-term changes in the weather. The Daphnia produced three cohorts in the year and the strength of the cohorts was determined by year-to-year variations in the physical characteristics of the lake and the abundance of edible algae. Food was most abundant in early summer when small, fast-growing flagellates were particularly common. In late summer, the phytoplankton community was dominated by large, inedible species but edible forms re-appeared when nutrients were entrained by wind mixing. Examples are presented to demonstrate the effect that year-to-year variations in the weather have on the growth of the phytoplankton and the dynamics of the Daphnia. In ‘good’ years, when the lake stratifies early and there are periods of episodic mixing in summer, there are two ‘pulses’ of edible algae and two strong cohorts of Daphnia. In ‘bad’ years when stratification is delayed and there is little episodic mixing, the growth of the edible algae is suppressed and the Daphnia produce two weak cohorts. The results are discussed in relation to the impact of intermediate disturbances on growth of phytoplankton and current theories of population regulation in Daphnia. The evidence suggests that the dynamics of the Daphnia in the lake are strongly influenced by seasonal variations in the mixing regime, the recycling of nutrients and the episodic growth of edible algae.  相似文献

Comparative analysis revealed that a xantha rice mutant (cv. Huangyu B) had higher ratios of chlorophyll (Chl) a/b and carotenoids/Chl, and higher photosynthetic efficiency than its wild type parent (cv. II32 B). Unexpectedly, the mutant had higher net photosynthetic rate (P N) than II32 B. This might have resulted from its lower non-photochemical quenching (qN) but higher maximal photochemical efficiency (FV/FM), higher excitation energy capture efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres (FV′/FM′), higher photochemical quenching (qP), higher effective PS2 quantum yield (ΦPS2), and higher non-cyclic electron transport rate (ETR). This is the first report of a chlorophyll mutant that has higher photosynthetic efficiency and main Chl fluorescence parameters than its wild type. This mutant could become a unique material both for the basic research on photosynthesis and for the development of high yielding rice cultivars.  相似文献

Seedlings of spring barley, meadow fescue, and winter rape were fumigated with 180 μg kg−1 of ozone for 12 d, and effect of O3 on photosynthesis and cell membrane permeability of fumigated plants was determined. Electrolyte leakage and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured after 6, 9, and 12 d of fumigation, while net photosynthetic rate (P N) and stomatal conductance (g s) were measured 9 d after the start of ozone exposure. O3 treatment did not change membrane permeability in fescue and barley leaves, while in rape a significant decrease in ion leakage was noted within the whole experiment. O3 did not change the photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2), i.e., Fv/Fm, and the initial fluorescence (F0). The values of half-rise time (t1/2) from F0 to maximal fluorescence (Fm) decreased in fescue and barley after 6 and 9 d of fumigation. P N decreased significantly in ozonated plants, in the three species. The greatest decrease in P N was observed in ozonated barley plants (17 % of the control). The ozone-induced decrease in P N was due to the closure of stomata. Rape was more resistant to ozone than fescue or barley. Apparently, the rape plants show a large adaptation to ozone and prevent loss of membrane integrity leading to ion leakage. Salt marshes are ecosystems subjected to a variety of environmental stresses like high salinity, water deficit, intense radiation or high temperatures. Field measurements were conduced in two halophyte species, Atriplex portulacoides L. and Limoniastrum monopetalum L., in the Reserva Natural do Sapal de Castro Marim, to compare their physiological response, i.e., water potential (ψ), net photosynthetic rate (A), stomatal conductance (gs) under natural conditions. Both species demonstrated marked variations in ψ throughout the year, with very low values in the summer, the period of higher salinity, drought and temperature. Deficit water potential (Δψ = ψmidday − ψpredawn) was lower in the summer than in other seasons in A. portulacoides but not in L. monopetalum. The highest values for A and gs in L. monopetalum were observed in autumn and for A. portulacoides in winter, presenting both lowest values in spring and summer. Amax was particularly high for L. monopetalum than for A. portulacoides in summer and autumn, despite gsmax was similar in both species. Diurnal pattern of A and gs were similar in both species, with higher values in the morning, decreasing throughout the day.  相似文献

The changes in photosynthetic efficiency and photosynthetic pigments during dehydration of the resurrection plantSelaginella lepidophylla (from the Chiuhahuan desert, S.W. Texas, USA) were examined under different light conditions. Changes in the photosynthetic efficiency were deduced from chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements (Fo, Fm, and Fv) and pigment changes were measured by HPLC analysis. A small decrease in Fv/Fm was seen in hydrated stems in high light (650 μmol photons·m−2·s−1) but not in low light (50 μmol photons·m−2·s−1). However, a pronounced decline in Fv/Fm was observed during dehydration in both light treatments, after one to two hours of dehydration. A rise in Fo was observed only after six to ten hours of dehydration. Concomitant with the decrease in photosynthetic efficiency during dehydration a rise in the xanthophyll zeaxanthin was observed, even in low-light treatments. The increase in zeaxanthin can be related to previously observed photoprotective non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence in dehydrating stems ofS. lepidophylla. We hypothesize that under dehydrating conditions even low light levels become excessive and zeaxanthin-related photoprotection is engaged. We speculate that these processes, as well as stem curling and self shading (Eickmeier et al. 1992), serve to minimize photoinhibitory damage toS. lepidophylla during the process of dehydration.  相似文献

In a seasonally dry tropical region the water use efficiency (WUE) of three grasses (C3 winter annualPolypogon monspeliensis, C4 perennialDichanthium annulatum and C4 warm seasonal annualEchinochloa colonum) was evaluated during summer and winter under nine experimental conditions (3 soil moisture×3 herbage removal). Generally leaf water status and transpiration rate decreased with soil moisture stress and increased with clipping intensity. During winter the transpiration rate of Dichanthium was much lower than that of Polypogon and its own rate in summer. Both soil moisture stress and clipping intensity increased the WUE in all instances. Despite differences in photosynthetic type, growing season and life form, these grasses exhibited broadly similar positive relationships, across nine treatments for WUE: soil moisture stress, and water consumption: production. The range of WUE (g. mm–1) calculated on TNP through the nine treatments was: summer—Dichanthium 2.9–10.0, Echinochloa 2.0–6.7; winter—Dichanthium 4.3–36.3, Polypogon 1.9–12.0.  相似文献

Big Soda Lake is an alkaline, saline lake with a permanent chemocline at 34.5 m and a mixolimnion that undergoes seasonal changes in temperature structure. During the period of thermal stratification, from summer through fall, the epilimnion has low concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients (N, Si) and CH4, and low biomass of phytoplankton (chlorophyll a ca. 1 mgm -3). Dissolved oxygen disappears near the compensation depth for algal photosynthesis (ca. 20 m). Surface water is transparent so that light is present in the anoxic hypolimnion, and a dense plate of purple sulfur photosynthetic bacteria (Ectothiorhodospira vacuolata) is present just below 20 m (Bchl a ca. 200 mgm-3). Concentrations of N H4 +, Si, and CH4 are higher in the hypolimnion than in the epilimnion. As the mixolimnion becomes isothermal in winter, oxygen is mixed down to 28 m. Nutrients (NH4 +, Si) and CH4 are released from the hypolimnion and mix to the surface, and a diatom bloom develops in the upper 20 m (chlorophyll a > 40 mgm-3). The deeper mixing of oxygen and enhanced light attenuation by phytoplankton uncouple the anoxic zone and photic zone, and the plate of photosynthetic bacteria disappears (Bchl a ca.10mgm-3). Hence, seasonal changes in temperature distribution and mixing create conditions such that the primary producer community is alternately dominated by phytoplankton and photosynthetic bacteria: the phytoplankton may be nutrient-limited during periods of stratification and the photosynthetic bacteria are light-limited during periods of mixing.  相似文献

The response of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Akcent) to various photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and elevated [CO2] [700 μmol (CO2) mol−1; EC] was studied by gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence, and pigment analysis. In comparison with barley grown under ambient [CO2] [350 μmol (CO2) mol−1; AC] the EC acclimation resulted in a decrease in photosynthetic capacity, reduced stomatal conductance, and decreased total Chl content. The extent of acclimation depression of photosynthesis, the most pronounced for the plants grown at 730 μmol m−2 s−1 (PPFD730), may be related to the degree of sink-limitation. The increased non-radiative dissipation of absorbed photon energy for all EC plants corresponded to the higher de-epoxidation state of xanthophylls only for PPFD730 barley. Further, a pronounced decrease in photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemical efficiency (given as FV/FM) for EC plants grown at 730 and 1 200 μmol m−2 s−1 in comparison with AC barley was related to the reduced epoxidation of antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin back to violaxanthin in darkness. Thus the EC conditions sensitise the photosynthetic apparatus of high-irradiance acclimated barley plants (particularly PPFD730) to the photoinactivation of PS2. Diurnal variation of gas exchange, chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence, and xanthophyll cycle components of three maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids released in different years, i.e. Baimaya (1950s), Zhongdan2 (1970s), and Nongda108 (1990s), were compared. On cloudless days, the newer hybrids always had higher net photosynthetic rate (P N), especially at noon, than the older ones. At noon, all the hybrids decreased their maximal yield of photosystem 2 (PS2) photochemistry (Fv/Fm) and actual quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2), the newer ones always showing higher values. Generally, the newer hybrids displayed higher photochemical quenching of Chl (qP) and lower non-photochemical quenching (NPQ). The interhybrid differences in P N may be owing to their differential photochemical efficiency. A midday depression in P N occurred in all hybrids, which might be caused by serious photoinhibition or by decreased stomatal conductance. However, midday depression in P N was more obvious in the older hybrids, especially when leaves were senescent. The higher de-epoxidation state of the xanthophylls was noted in older hybrids, which was confirmed by their larger NPQ. The newer maize hybrids did not need a strong de-epoxidation state since they had a better photosynthetic quantum conversion rate and a lower NPQ.  相似文献

Microcoleus chthonoplastes constitutes one of the dominant microorganisms in intertidal microbial mat communities. In the laboratory, the effects of repeated daily exposure to ultraviolet radiation (16:8 light:dark cycle) was investigated in unicyanobacterial cultures isolated from three different localities (Baltic Sea = WW6; North Sea = STO and Brittany = BRE). Photosynthesis and growth were measured in time series (12–15 days) while UV-absorbing mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and cellular integrity were determined after 12 and 3 days exposure to three radiation treatments [PAR (22 μmol photon m−2 s−1) = P; PAR + UV-A (8 W m−2) = PA; PAR + UV-A + UV-B (0.4 W m−2) = PAB]. Isolate-specific responses to UVR were observed. The proximate response to radiation stress after 1-day treatment showed that isolate WW6 was the most sensitive to UVR. However, repeated exposure to radiation stress indicated that photosynthetic efficiency (F v/F m) of WW6 acclimated to UVR. Conversely, although photosynthesis in STO exhibited lower reduction in F v/F m during the first day, the values declined over time. The BRE isolate was the most tolerant to radiation stress with the lowest reduction in F v/F m sustained over time. While photosynthetic efficiencies of different isolates were able to acclimate to UVR, growth did not. The discrepancy seems to be due to the higher cell density used for photosynthesis compared to the growth measurement. Apparently, the cell density used for photosynthesis was not high enough to offer self-shading protection because cellular damage was also observed in those filaments under UVR. Most likely, the UVR acclimation of photosynthesis reflects predominantly the performance of the surviving cells within the filaments. Different strategies were observed in MAAs synthesis. Total MAAs content in WW6 was not significantly different between all the radiation treatments. In contrast, the additional fluence of UV-A and UV-B significantly increased MAAs synthesis and accumulation in STO while only UV-B fluence significantly increased MAAs content in BRE. Regardless of the dynamic photosynthetic recovery process and potential UV-protective functions of MAAs, cellular investigation showed that UV-B significantly contributed to an increased cell mortality in single filaments. In their natural mat habitat, M. chthonoplastes benefits from closely associated cyanobacteria which are highly UVR-tolerant due to the production of the extracellular UV-sunscreen scytonemin.  相似文献

Diurnal and seasonal changes of net photosynthetic rate (Pn) and the efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm) were measured on two perennial species growing on a soil catena in semi-arid south-east Spain. Stipa tenacissima, a tussock grass, grows on shallow soil at the top of the catena and Retama sphaerocarpa, a leguminous shrub, grows in the valley bottom. A linear relationship was found between light saturated photosynthetic rates (Pmax) and diffusive leaf conductance (gl) in both Retama and Stipa indicating that the intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) was maintained constant in both species diurnally. Relatively high values of calculated ci in Retama cladodes suggested that was not the primary limitation to carbon assimilation. Fv/Fm for the two species when well watered was around 0.8. Although Retama cladodes maintained this value throughout the year, Fv/Fm decreased to a minimum of 0.43 in Stipa leaves, at the end of the dry season. Our data suggest that plants in the Rambla Honda can substantially reduce transpiration without reducing photosynthetic rates to the same extent by closing their stomata, because Pn is reduced primarily by high respiration, decreased mesophyll conductance and by photoinhibition or permanent damage of photosystem 2.  相似文献

To investigate how excess excitation energy is dissipated in a ribulose-1,5-bisphospate carboxylase/oxygenase activase antisense transgenic rice with net photosynthetic rate (P N) half of that of wild type parent, we measured the response curve of P N to intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), electron transport rate (ETR), quantum yield of open photosystem 2 (PS2) reaction centres under irradiation (Fv′/Fm′), efficiency of total PS2 centres (ΦPS2), photochemical (qP) and non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), post-irradiation transient increase in chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence (PITICF), and P700+ re-reduction. Carboxylation efficiency dependence on C i, ETR at saturation irradiance, and Fv′/Fm′, ΦPS2, and qP under the irradiation were significantly lower in the mutant. However, NPQ, energy-dependent quenching (qE), PITICF, and P700+ re-reduction were significantly higher in the mutant. Hence the mutant down-regulates linear ETR and stimulates cyclic electron flow around PS1, which may generate the ΔpH to support NPQ and qE for dissipation of excess excitation energy.  相似文献

Leaves of overwintering evergreen rhododendrons are typically exposed to freezing temperatures and high light during winters which can potentially result in photon flux exceeding that required for photochemistry. This excess energy, if not dissipated as heat or fluorescence, may cause photooxidative damage to PSII. The goal of this study is to compare the photoprotection strategies during seasonal cold acclimation (CA) in two Rhododendron species (R. catawbiense Michx. and R. ponticum L.) that are divergent in their leaf freezing tolerance and thermonastic behaviour (temperature-induced leaf movement). R. catawbiense exhibits thermonasty while R. ponticum does not. Differences in leaf freezing tolerance (LT50), photosynthesis, photoinhibition, early light-induced proteins (ELIPs) gene expression, and accumulation of antioxidant metabolites and enzymes during seasonal CA were investigated. During seasonal CA, maximum photosynthetic rate (Pmax) and maximum quantum efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) were significantly down-regulated. Compared with R. catawbiense, R. ponticum showed less photoinhibition and higher overall accumulation (in magnitude) of antioxidant systems while R. catawbiense exhibited more efficient up-regulation of ELIP expression and antioxidant system (i.e., greater efficiency of increasing this pool in winter months relative to the summer levels). The two species respond differently to winter conditions and have evolved strategies to avoid, reduce and/or tolerate photooxidative stress in winter. These include down-regulation of photosynthesis and up-regulation of ELIPs and antioxidant systems, together with specialized leaf anatomy and thermonasty behaviour.  相似文献

Photoinhibitory processes in the photosynthetic apparatus of the seedlings of Abies alba (Mill.), Picea abies (Karst.), and Pinus mugo (Turra) growing under strong shade (5 % of full solar irradiance) or full irradiance conditions were investigated in winter and spring using chlorophyll a fluorescence techniques. The extent of photoinhibition in needles as indicated by a decrease in maximum quantum yield of PS II photochemistry (Fv/Fm) depended on species, air temperature and acclimation to the light environment. Unexpectedly, shade-tolerant Abies alba was less affected by low-temperature photoinhibition compared to the other species. Fv/Fm recovered with increasing air temperature. During winter, the seedlings of Picea abies growing in shade showed higher Fv/Fm than those from full light. Non-photochemical quenching of fluorescence (NPQ) measured at the same levels of actinic light was higher in needles acclimated to full light except for Abies alba in February. Photosynthetic performance in term of ETR (apparent electron transfer rate) was also higher in full light-acclimated needles. In April, at ambient temperature, recovery of PS II efficiency from the stress induced by illumination with saturating light was faster in the needles of Picea abies than in those of Abies alba. The shade-acclimated needles of Abies alba and Picea abies showed greater down-regulation of PS II induced by high light stress.  相似文献

Spraying low concentrated (0.5–5.0 mM) solutions of NaHSO3 on Satsuma mandarin (Citrus unshiu Marc.) leaves resulted in enhancement (maximal about 15 % at 1 mM NaHSO3) of net photosynthetic rate (P N) for 6 d. The potential photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (PS2, Fv/Fm) and the quantum yield of PS2 electron transport (ΦPS2) were increased under strong photon flux density (PFD). The slow phase of millisecond delayed light emission (ms-DLE) was increased, showing that the transmembrane proton motive force related to photophosphorylation was enhanced. We also observed that low concentrations of NaHSO3 promoted the production of ATP in irradiated leaves. We suggest that the increase in P N in Satsuma mandarin leaves caused by low concentrations of NaHSO3 solution may have been due to the stimulation of photophosphorylation and, hence, the increase in photochemical efficiency through speeding-up of PS2 electron transport. Photoinhibition of photosynthesis in leaves was modified by NaHSO3 treatment under high PFD. Hence the increase in leaf dry mass seems to be associated with the mitigation of photoinhibition caused by strong PFD.  相似文献

Growth, photosynthetic gas exchange, and chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics were investigated in wild type (WT) and Cd-sensitive mutant rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants using 50 μM Cd treatment for 12 d followed by a 3-d recovery. Under Cd stress, net dry mass and pigment contents were significantly lower in the mutant plants than in the WT. The mutant had lower net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and stomatal conductance (g s) than WT rice, however, it had higher intercellular CO2 concentration (C i), indicating that non-stomatal factors accounted for the inhibition of P N. Maximal photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2 (Fv/Fm), effective quantum yield of PS2 (ΦPS2), and photochemical quenching (qP) decreased much in the mutant under Cd stress. Cd content in roots and leaves of the mutant was significantly higher than those in the WT. Hence Cd toxicity was associated with the marked increases in Cd contents of plant tissue. After the recovery for 3 d, the WT rice had higher capacity to recover from Cd injury than the mutant.  相似文献

The photosynthetic responses of the tropical tree species Acacia nigrescens Oliv. grown at different atmospheric CO2 concentrations—from sub-ambient to super-ambient—have been studied. Light-saturated rates of net photosynthesis (A sat) in A. nigrescens, measured after 120 days exposure, increased significantly from sub-ambient (196 μL L−1) to current ambient (386 μL L−1) CO2 growth conditions but did not increase any further as [CO2] became super-ambient (597 μL L−1). Examination of photosynthetic CO2 response curves, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf thickness showed that this acclimation was most likely caused by reduction in Rubisco activity and a shift towards ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate regeneration-limited photosynthesis, but not a consequence of changes in mesophyll conductance. Also, measurements of the maximum efficiency of PSII and the carotenoid to chlorophyll ratio of leaves indicated that it was unlikely that the pattern of A sat seen was a consequence of growth [CO2] induced stress. Many of the photosynthetic responses examined were not linear with respect to the concentration of CO2 but could be explained by current models of photosynthesis.  相似文献

Photosynthetic parameters, growth, and pigment contents were determined during expansion of the fourth leaf of in vitro photoautotrophically cultured Nicotiana tabacum L. plants at three irradiances [photosynthetically active radiation (400–700 nm): low, LI 60 μmol m−2 s−1; middle, MI 180 μmol m−2 s−1; and high, HI 270 μmol m−2 s−1]. During leaf expansion, several symptoms usually accompanying leaf senescence appeared very early in HI and then in MI plants. Symptoms of senescence in developing leaves were: decreasing chlorophyll (Chl) a+b content and Chl a/b ratio, decreasing both maximum (FV/FM) and actual (ΦPS2) photochemical efficiency of photosystem 2, and increasing non-photochemical quenching. Nevertheless, net photosynthetic oxygen evolution rate (P N) did not decrease consistently with decrease in Chl content, but exhibited a typical ontogenetic course with gradual increase. P N reached its maximum before full leaf expansion and then tended to decline. Thus excess irradiance during in vitro cultivation did not cause early start of leaf senescence, but impaired photosynthetic performance and Chl content in leaves and changed their typical ontogenetic course.  相似文献
