In a prospective survey of patients attending a general medical outpatient clinic roughly half the current cigarette smokers who had smoked for 10 years or more were identified, using defined criteria, by their facial features alone. These facial features, designated "smoker''s face," were present in three (8%) of those who had smoked cigarettes for 10 years or more in the past and in none of the non-smokers. The association of smoker''s face with current smoking that had continued for 10 years or more was significant (p less than 0.001) and remained after the patient''s age, social class, exposure to sunlight, recent change of weight, and estimated lifetime consumption of cigarettes were controlled for. Smoker''s face may be a helpful indicator in antismoking campaigns.  相似文献

To assess delay in referring patients with suspected glaucoma two methods were studied in a randomised trial: direct referral from optician to ophthalmologist and referral through the patient''s general practitioner. Little is known about the potential of non-human mammal vocalizations to signal information on the hormonal status of the caller. In the current study, we used endocrine data and acoustic analyses to determine whether male giant panda bleats provide reliable information about the caller''s current androgen levels. Our results revealed significant relationships between acoustic features of male giant panda bleats and the caller''s faecal androgen metabolite concentrations. To our knowledge, this constitutes the first demonstration that the acoustic structure of a non-human mammal call has the potential to yield information about the caller''s current androgen levels. We go on to discuss the anatomical basis for our findings and the potential functional relevance of signalling information on male androgen levels in giant panda sexual communication.  相似文献

Identifying the areas susceptible to dust storm formation is one effective way of dealing with this destructive environmental phenomenon. This study is the first attempt to employ the Apriori spatial data mining algorithm to dust source susceptibility mapping (DSSM). The research process was based on extracting association rules between spatial-temporal patterns of dust drivers (including soil, vegetation, and climate parameters) in the Middle East's hotspots dust sources (HDSs). For this purpose, HDSs were identified using visual interpretation of sub-daily MODIS-Terra/Aqua RGB images from 2000 to 2021. The Middle East's HDSs mainly correspond to desert areas with poor vegetation cover and ephemeral/dried-up water bodies. A total of three million rules were extracted by running the Apriori algorithm. Accordingly, bare and non-vegetated lands, high soil thickness, low soil moisture, very high wind speed, and high temperature were identified as the most common features of HDSs. Using three measures including support, confidence, and lift, 54 frequent, reliable, and logical rules were selected, and the related maps were generated. Then, the susceptible dust sources (SDSs) map of the Middle East was produced in five classes of extreme (13% of the areas), high (14%), moderate (16%), low (17%), and no (40%) susceptibility through the weighted linear combination of the rule maps. The accuracy of the identified SDSs was estimated at 83.7% using the verification points. A sensitivity analysis was performed using the leave-one-out method to determine the isolated effect of the selected rules on the produced SDSs map. The model uncertainty varied between 15.7% and 16.8% for different rules. The variation range of uncertainty was 1.1%, demonstrating that a single rule does not significantly affect the model's performance; however, some rules have a more influential role. Our results revealed that Apriori's ability to provide generalizable association rules is a robust algorithm for DSSM.  相似文献

The majority of abnormal sex chromosome complexes in the male have been considered to be variants of Klinefelter''s syndrome but an exception should probably be made in the case of the XXXXY individual who has distinctive phenotypic features. Clinical, radiological and cytological data on three new cases of XXXXY syndrome are presented and 30 cases from the literature are reviewed. In many cases the published clinical and radiological data were supplemented and re-evaluated. Mental retardation, usually severe, was present in all cases. Typical facies was observed in many; clinodactyly of the fifth finger was seen in nearly all.Radiological examination revealed abnormalities in the elbows and wrists in all the 19 personally evaluated cases, and other skeletal anomalies were very frequent. Cryptorchism is very common and absence of Leydig''s cells may differentiate the XXXXY chromosome anomaly from polysomic variants of Klinefelter''s syndrome. The relationship of this syndrome to Klinefelter''s syndrome and to Down''s syndrome is discussed.  相似文献

Objective: This study aimed to examine the interrelationships between mothers' and fathers' reports on the child‐feeding questionnaire (CFQ), the BMI of parents and their children, and observations of parents' controlling feeding practices at mealtimes. Methods and Procedures: Twenty‐three mothers and twenty‐three fathers of children aged between 18 and 67 months reported on their child‐feeding practices, on their child's height and weight, and were observed during a normal family mealtime at home. Results: No associations were found between mothers' reported and observed feeding practices. Fathers' reported pressure to eat and restriction were associated with more controlling observed mealtime feeding practices. Mothers and fathers did not significantly differ in their reported or observed child‐feeding practices. Children's BMI was not related to maternal or paternal reported or observed feeding practices. More mealtime pressure was observed in parents with a higher BMI. Discussion: Fathers' self‐reports of their mealtime practices are reliable. Mothers' feeding practices may differ when fathers are present and further work should examine mothers at mealtimes with and without fathers. Although children's BMI was not related to parents' use of reported or observed control, parents with a higher BMI were more controlling, highlighting the importance of considering parents' own weight in future studies.  相似文献

A growing body of research has examined how voice characteristics advertise personal dimensions relevant in mate competition and mate choice. This work has centered on two key voice features, namely, fundamental frequency (F0) and formants (Fn), and has consistently found that speakers with low F0, low Fn, or both are rated as being larger, more masculine, and more attractive if men but less attractive if women. However, this consistency in listeners' perceptions is not matched by an equivalent consensus in how these mate-relevant dimensions are causally related or signaled by voice characteristics. Consequently, it is critical to test whether the strong correlations in listeners' perceptions reflect reliable causal relationships between these dimensions or, alternatively, whether they reflect some perceptual or cognitive nonindependence, for example, “what is large is masculine” and “what is small is feminine.” To test this latter possibility, we report detailed analyses of interdependence in listeners' ratings of perceived size, masculinity or femininity, and attractiveness of natural and manipulated voices of the opposite sex. We found strong correlations in listeners' ratings of all three dimensions, confirming past research. Principal component analysis corroborated these interrelationships but also revealed some independence in women's ratings of men's attractiveness and additional (but weaker) independence in men's ratings of women's size. We discuss possible implications for future research on the evolved psychology of voice and whether and how it reflects adaptive functional heuristics for discriminating mates.  相似文献

A within-subject experiment compared three paradigms commonly used in visceral perception: self-report, heartbeat tracking, and signal detection. Eighteen undergraduates estimated heart rate using each technique while engaging in a number of separate tasks conducted a week apart. Although all three techniques significantly tapped accuracy of heart rate perception, only the self-report and signal detection methods were reliable over time. Most important, there was no relationship involving any of the methods in measuring accuracy. The findings suggest some fundamental differences in the assumptions and perceptual properties of the various paradigms. A distinction is made between visceral perception and detection. Perception implies the subject's use of both internal physiological and external environmental information in the perception of visceral state. Detection connotes the subject's use of only physiological information — to the exclusion of all other factors. The relevance of these approaches for biofeedback and real-world symptom perception is discussed.  相似文献

目的:研究窦性心率震荡诊断2型糖尿病合并隐性高血压患者的临床效果。方法:对2009年12月至2013年4月我院心内科收治的2型糖尿病合并高血压患者123例进行回顾性分析,根据诊室内手测血压及24 h动态血压监测结果将患者分为高血压组(EH组)及隐性高血压组(MH)组,另取在我院体检的诊室及24小时动态血压均正常者为NT组,三组研究对象均进行诊室内手测血压,24 h动态血压监测及HRT检测,比较三组检测结果。结果:(1)诊室内手测血压结果显示MH组收缩压及舒张压与NT组差异无统计学意义(P0.05);EH组收缩压及舒张压与NT组比较差异具有统计学意义(P0.05)。(2)24 h动态血压监测结果显示MH组及EH组收缩压与舒张压与NT组比较差异均具有统计学意义(P0.05)。(3)HRT检测结果显示MH组及EH组TO值与TS值与NT组比较差异均具有统计学意义(P0.05)。结论:HRT检测结果可作为诊断2型糖尿病患者隐性高血压的一项可靠指标。  相似文献

Two nasopharyngeal carcinomas of the lymphoepithelioma type and two Burkitt''s lymphomas with the characteristic histopathologic features developed in three siblings and one first-degree cousin in a large French-Canadian family. Epstein-Barr virus antibody titres in the two lymphoepithelioma cases but not in the Burkitt''s lymphoma cases were, as expected, greatly elevated. HLA typing of the family members failed to disclose HLA antigens A2 and B Sin-2, which have been associated with lymphoepithelioma in Asia. The occurrence, however, of a plasmacytoma in one other first-degree cousin and low serum IgA values in several siblings and cousins suggests the possibility of a genetically determined predisposing B-cell dysfunction in the development of these tumours.  相似文献

Five patients with bronchogenic carcinoma associated with adrenocortical hyperfunction are described. The clinical features, laboratory studies and autopsy findings are discussed and compared with previously reported cases. Four patients presented most of the typical features of this disorder as previously described, whereas the fifth was atypical in some respects. Typical features included: acute onset of adrenocortical hyperfunction in a middle-aged male, rapid downhill course, slight or absent physical signs of Cushing''s syndrome, frequently impaired glucose tolerance, markedly elevated plasma and urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroids not suppressed by exogenous steroids, absent diurnal variation of plasma corticoids, hypokalemic alkalosis with normal aldosterone excretion, and tumour histology of the oat cell variety. The adrenal glands of two patients were of normal or slightly increased weight, and mean 17-ketosteroid excretion values were normal in three; this contrasts with the marked increase in adrenal weight and 17-ketosteroid excretion in most reported cases.  相似文献

Rats with ad libitum water and the ability to self-select among three macronutrient-rich diets—carbohydrate (CHO), protein (PRO), and lipid (LIP)—show a circadian rhythmicity in their ingestion. The aim of the present study was to determine whether this circadian rhythmicity is reliable from day to day. Eight rats were offered ad libitum water and a choice of three isoenergetic diet rations providing carbohydrate, protein, and lipid. Water and food intake was recorded every 3 h for 7 days. The reliability of the circadian rhythm of water and food intake was assessed by the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) and the test-retest reliability using the Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (r). The results showed that the circadian rhythm of water, CHO, and PRO intake are strongly reliable. However, the circadian rhythm of LIP intake is less reproducible. Among the three reliable parameters—water, CHO, and PRO, the circadian rhythm of water intake was the most reproducible over 7 days. This suggests that water intake may be used as a marker of circadian rhythmicity in ingestive behavior.  相似文献

This study investigates people's ability to interpret dog behavior. Inability to interpret dog behavior correctly may be a factor contributing to young children's higher likelihood of being bitten by dogs. Children (4- to 10-year-olds) and adults (total n = 550) watched videos of dogs displaying friendly, aggressive, and fearful behavior. They were asked to interpret the dogs' behaviors and to describe which features they had attended to in making their decision. Four- and 6-year-old children were unable to identify fearful dogs, while participants in all age groups were capable of identifying friendly and aggressive behavior (p < 0.001). Misinterpretations of fearful behavior were significantly associated with reports of attending to the dog's face rather than other features (χ2 = 80.2, df = 1, p < 0.001). Four-year-olds were particularly likely to report looking at the dog's face and together with 6-year-olds they focused more on one feature rather than multiple features in order to make their decisions. The results show that younger children are less good at interpreting dog behavior, and that they are particularly poor at recognizing fear in dogs, while aggression is the most readily recognized behavior. Children's lower ability to interpret dog behavior seems to be due to the features they focus on. Younger children appear to focus on the dogs' most salient features and not the features that would allow them to correctly interpret the dogs' behavior. For example, 4- and 6-year-olds tended to report attending to the fearful dog's face rather than its tail and general posture. The results suggest it would be beneficial to include information about how to interpret dog behavior in dog-bite prevention programs.  相似文献

Background

Electroencephalographic (EEG) microstate analysis is a method of identifying quasi-stable functional brain states (“microstates”) that are altered in a number of neuropsychiatric disorders, suggesting their potential use as biomarkers of neurophysiological health and disease. However, use of EEG microstates as neurophysiological biomarkers requires assessment of the test-retest reliability of microstate analysis.

Methods

We analyzed resting-state, eyes-closed, 30-channel EEG from 10 healthy subjects over 3 sessions spaced approximately 48 hours apart. We identified four microstate classes and calculated the average duration, frequency, and coverage fraction of these microstates. Using Cronbach''s α and the standard error of measurement (SEM) as indicators of reliability, we examined: (1) the test-retest reliability of microstate features using a variety of different approaches; (2) the consistency between TAAHC and k-means clustering algorithms; and (3) whether microstate analysis can be reliably conducted with 19 and 8 electrodes.

Results

The approach of identifying a single set of “global” microstate maps showed the highest reliability (mean Cronbach''s α>0.8, SEM ≈10% of mean values) compared to microstates derived by each session or each recording. There was notably low reliability in features calculated from maps extracted individually for each recording, suggesting that the analysis is most reliable when maps are held constant. Features were highly consistent across clustering methods (Cronbach''s α>0.9). All features had high test-retest reliability with 19 and 8 electrodes.

Conclusions

High test-retest reliability and cross-method consistency of microstate features suggests their potential as biomarkers for assessment of the brain''s neurophysiological health.  相似文献

ObjectiveEctopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome (EAS) is a rare cause of Cushing's syndrome and diagnosis and management remain challenging. The aim of this study was to present the clinical spectrum of a group of EAS cases in a single center to explore better management strategies.MethodsA retrospective study was conducted to identify 88 confirmed EAS cases at our hospital from 1984 to 2019. The clinical, biochemical, imaging, and pathological features were analyzed.ResultsOf the 88 eligible patients with EAS, 38 (43.2%) cases of pulmonary neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and a larger number of thymic/mediastinal NETs (29 cases, 33%) were identified. The clinical and biological features of EAS and Cushing's disease overlapped but were more severe in EAS. Inferior petrosal sinus sampling (97.4%) and computed tomography (85.4%) provided the highest positive diagnostic accuracy. Computed tomography is also a useful tool to identify tumors in chest cavity compared with nonchest lesions (91.2% vs 57.1%). Although a greater tumor size (4.54 cm vs 1.44 cm) and higher rate of insuppressible high-dose dexamethasone suppression test (83.3% vs 51.5%) were found in thymic/mediastinum NETs than in pulmonary NETs, the level of hormone production had no difference.ConclusionEAS had more common and severe clinical presentations than Cushing's disease, and multiple imaging approaches are required for reliable diagnosis. A higher proportion of thymic/mediastinal NETs was found in our study. For patients without a certain tumor source, long-term follow-up and further evaluations are needed.  相似文献

The present study illustrates an original approach for the long-term assessment of soil erosion risk under land-use changes in a Mediterranean region (Matera, southern Italy). The study has been focused on the implementation of a modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) model at three time points (1960, 1990, 2010) with the objective to evaluate the contribution of each component to model's performance and model outcomes’ reliability. A modified USLE model was proposed for the assessment of soil erosion risk, based on the simplification of model’s parameters and the use of high spatial resolution datasets. Spatio-temporal variability in the model's outcomes was analyzed for basic land-use classes. Our approach has improved model's flexibility with the use of high spatial resolution layers, producing reliable long-term estimates of soil loss for the study area.  相似文献

Details were studied of three patients with duodenal carcinoid tumour in association with neurofibromatosis and phaeochromocytoma, and of four patients with duodenal carcinoid and either von Recklinghausen''s disease or phaeochromocytoma. The rarity of these endocrine tumours, together with the unusual morphological features and somatostatin content of the two duodenal carcinoids examined, suggest that this combination of tumours is not a chance association. It is suggested that this linkage of neurofibromatosis, phaeochromocytoma, and duodenal carcinoid is a specific multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome.  相似文献

Background

Behcet''s disease is known as a recurrent, multisystem inflammation and immune-related disease. Protein tyrosine phosphatase non-receptor 22 (PTPN22) is a key negative regulator of T lymphocytes and polymorphisms of the PTPN22 gene have been shown to be associated with various immune-related diseases. The present study was performed to assess the association between PTPN22 polymorphisms and Behcet''s disease in two Chinese Han populations.

Methodology/Principal Findings

A total of 516 patients with ocular Behcet''s disease and 690 healthy controls from two Chinese Han populations were genotyped by the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method for three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was tested using the χ2 test. Genotype frequencies were estimated through direct counting. Allele and genotype frequencies were compared between patients and controls using logistic regression analysis. The results revealed that there was no association between the tested three PTPN22 SNPs (rs2488457, rs1310182 and rs3789604) and ocular Behcet''s disease (p>0.05). Categorization analysis according to the clinical features did not show any association of these three polymorphisms with these parameters (p>0.05).

Conclusions/Significance

The investigated PTPN22 gene polymorphisms (rs2488457, rs1310182 and rs3789604) were not associated with ocular Behcet''s disease in two Chinese Han populations, and showed that it may be different from other classical autoimmune diseases. More studies are needed to confirm these findings for Behcet''s disease in other ethnic backgrounds.  相似文献

Long-term behavioral tracking can capture and quantify natural animal behaviors, including those occurring infrequently. Behaviors such as exploration and social interactions can be best studied by observing unrestrained, freely behaving animals. Weakly electric fish (WEF) display readily observable exploratory and social behaviors by emitting electric organ discharge (EOD). Here, we describe three effective techniques to synchronously measure the EOD, body position, and posture of a free-swimming WEF for an extended period of time. First, we describe the construction of an experimental tank inside of an isolation chamber designed to block external sources of sensory stimuli such as light, sound, and vibration. The aquarium was partitioned to accommodate four test specimens, and automated gates remotely control the animals'' access to the central arena. Second, we describe a precise and reliable real-time EOD timing measurement method from freely swimming WEF. Signal distortions caused by the animal''s body movements are corrected by spatial averaging and temporal processing stages. Third, we describe an underwater near-infrared imaging setup to observe unperturbed nocturnal animal behaviors. Infrared light pulses were used to synchronize the timing between the video and the physiological signal over a long recording duration. Our automated tracking software measures the animal''s body position and posture reliably in an aquatic scene. In combination, these techniques enable long term observation of spontaneous behavior of freely swimming weakly electric fish in a reliable and precise manner. We believe our method can be similarly applied to the study of other aquatic animals by relating their physiological signals with exploratory or social behaviors.  相似文献
