The freeflight behavior of Carpophilus hemipterus (L.) (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) was investigated in a vertical flight chamber to measure takeoff propensity relative to beetle age and to determine the effect of food odors on phototactic orientation. A high-pressure sodium lamp presented from above induced a phototactic flight response, especially in beetles 3–7 days old. The majority of phototactic flights lasted less than 15 min for both males (73%) and females (85%), but ranged up to 100 min. A bimodal periodicity in flight propensity was recorded during the photophase with a small peak in activity occurring 14–10 h prior to scotophase and a large 4 h peak occurring from 3 h prior to scotophase to 1 h after when the onset of scotophase would normally have occurred. Beetles maintained with water as adults usually displayed higher levels of flight activity than did beetles maintained with artificial diet. After a period of vertical flight, photokinetic and phototactic response declined, and flight instability increased, as indicated by an overall decrease in the mean rate of climb, accompanied by an increase in the variability of this measure and an increase in horizontal displacement. When food odor (apple cider vinegar) was introduced the rate of climb dropped rapidly and beetles usually landed regardless of how long they had been in flight. When the food odor was removed, takeoff occurred and the beetle returned to its previous rate of climb. When food odor was repeatedly introduced during the same flight, there was no apparent cumulative effect, and each time it was removed, the beetle re-initiated phototactic flight. Unlike true migratory flight in which response to vegetative cues is temporarily inhibited until the insect has engaged in a period of phototactic flight, C. hemipterus flight could be better characterized as extended foraging in which phototactic flight is readily interrupted by encounters with food odor.

Abstract 1 Carpophilus sayi, a nitidulid beetle vector of the oak wilt fungus, Ceratocystis fagacearum, was shown to have a male‐produced aggregation pheromone. 2 Six male‐specific chemicals were identified from collections of volatiles. The two major compounds were (2E,4E,6E,8E)‐3,5‐dimethyl‐7‐ethyl‐2,4,6,8‐undecatetraene and (2E,4E,6E,8E)‐3,5,7‐trimethyl‐2,4,6,8‐undecatetraene, in a ratio of 100 : 18. These compounds, in a similar ratio, were previously reported to be the pheromone of Carpophilus lugubris, a closely related species. The four minor C. sayi compounds (less than 4% as abundant as the first) were also alkyl‐branched hydrocarbons and consisted of two additional tetraenes and two trienes. 3 The pheromone of C. lugubris was re‐examined to refine the comparison with C. sayi, and C. lugubris was found to have the same additional, minor tetraenes as C. sayi, but not the trienes. 4 A synthetic mixture of the two major compounds was behaviourally active for both sexes of C. sayi in oak woodlands in Minnesota. The pheromone was tested in combination with fermenting whole wheat bread dough (a potent synergist of nitidulid pheromones). The combination of the 500‐µg pheromone dose and dough attracted at least 30‐fold more C. sayi than either pheromone or dough by itself. The synergized pheromone has potential as a tool for monitoring insect vector activity in an integrated management program for oak wilt. 5 Although C. lugubris was not present at the Minnesota test sites, two other Carpophilus species, Carpophilus brachypterus and Carpophilus corticinus, were clearly cross‐attracted to the synergized pheromone of C. sayi.

Summary The goldenrod leaf beetle, Trirhabda canadensis, is known to respond to odors of host and non-host species in the laboratory. Here we report movements of T. canadensis in the field in response to volatile odors from monocultures and polycultures of host plants. Overall, beetles preferentially colonized plots with a higher density of host plants and lower diversity of allelochemicals, but under some wind conditions there were marked exceptions. At high windspeeds, they colonized whichever plot(s) was upwind. At low windspeeds, beetles colonized preferred plots even when they were not upwind. The data suggest that odor dispersion varies in a complex way with windspeed: at low windspeeds beetles received information from a wide are of vegetation and made choices while at high windspeeds information was available only from upwind plot(s).

Aggregation pheromones for sevenCarpophilus (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) species were field tested at a site with a rich nitidulid fauna in Ohio, USA, during the summers of 1992 and 1993. The pheromones used were blends identified for:Carpophilus antiquus (Melsheimer),C. brachypterus (Say),C. freemani Dobson, C. hemipterus (L.),C. lugubris Murray,C. mutilatus Erichson, andC. obsoletus Erichson. Each pheromone was used in conjunction with whole wheat bread dough, an effective co-attractant. The pheromone ofC. brachypterus Say was identified during the course of this study and was also tested; males emitted a 100:6:11:4:3 blend of (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-3, 5, 7-trimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-decatetraene, (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-3, 5, 7-trimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-undecatetraene, (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-7-ethyl-3, 5-dimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-decatetraene, (3E, 5E, 7E, 9E)-4, 6, 8-trimethyl-3, 5, 7, 9-undecatetraene and (2E, 4E, 6E, 8E)-7-ethyl-3, 5-dimethyl-2, 4, 6, 8-undecatetraene, respectively. All species responded favorably to their own pheromones with the exception ofC. obsoletus, which was not present in this area. Strong mutual cross attraction was observed betweenC. brachypterus andC. hemipterus. In addition,C. lugubris responded to the pheromones ofC. obsoletus andC. hemipterus and, more weakly, to those ofC. freemani andC. brachypterus; C. freemani responded slightly to the pheromone ofC. multilatus; andC. antiquus responded to the pheromone ofC. lugubris. In most cases, cross attraction was related to the species involved sharing pheromone components. ForC. antiquus, however, the response to theC. lugubris pheromone was apparently kairomonalC. corticinus, C. marginatus, C. marginellus, andC. sayi, for which pheromones are not known, were attracted to the pheromone ofC. lugubris and in some cases to other pheromones. Significant numbers ofColopterus spp. responded to the blends forC. lugubris, C. hemipterus, C. brachypterus, and probably,C. obsoletus.

Host orientation by two nitidulid beetles was compared: Stelidota geminata (Say), which is very broad in its' host range, and Stelidota octomaculata (Say), a species whose feeding is restricted primarily to acorns. In a no-choice assay, both species responded to all food substrates offered and neither showed a significant preference among substrates (except banana versus wood fungi for S. octomaculata), or between aseptic and inoculated treatments; however, S. geminata readily displayed both phototactic flights and host-orienting flights, whereas S. octomaculata never exhibited phototactic flight and never responded to food odors by flying to the source. Furthermore, when upwind-walking response was compared, S. octomaculata walked to the source at a rate of 0.16±0.01 cm/s, which was significantly lower than that of S. geminata, with a rate of 0.54±0.02 cm/s. Turning frequency on the way to the source also differed between the two species, whereas distance traveled, number of pauses, and duration of pauses did not differ significantly. We submit that both species represent olfactory generalists, and that the restricted host range of S. octomaculata compared to S. geminata is not mediated by differences in long-range response to host odors, but rather is due to differences in other behaviors such as a reduced rate of locomotion, post-landing behavior, and possibly ecological factors.

The humidity reactions of intact and antennaless specimens of Carpophilus dimidiatus and C. hemipterus were studied. The results suggested that the hygroreceptors mediating a response to high humidities are situated on the antennae in both species and those mediating a response to low humidities, in the case of C. dimidiatus, elsewhere on the body.

Data are presented on survival, fecundity, and hosts ofBrachyserphus abruptus (Say), a solitary internal parasite of nitidulid (sap beetle) larvae. In the laboratory these wasps have been successfully reared fromCarpophilus hemipterus (L.),C. freemani Dobson,C. lugubris Murray,Stelidota geminata (Say),S. octomaculata (Say),S. ferruginea Reitter,Glischrochilus quadrisignatus (Say),Lobiopa insularis (Castelnau), andHaptoncus luteolus (Erichson). Field collections ofB. abruptus have been made fromS. geminata, S. octomaculata, C. hemipterus, C. lugubris, L. insularis andH. luteolus. Oviposition continues throughout most of the adult female's lifetime. Under laboratory conditions life expectancy of females wasca. 6 days. Mean number of progeny reaching adulthood per female was 57, with a 1∶1 sex ratio. First and 2nd instar nitidulids were suitable for successful development ofB. abruptus. Third instars were attacked byB. abruptus but were not successfully parasitized. Parasite development required 29 days in 1st instar hosts and 27 d. in 2nd instars. Percent parasitism in 1st instarC. hemipterus averaged 65% and for 2nd instar 45%. After parasitism, larvae ofC. hemipterus surviving to become adults averaged 0.6% for 1st instar, 9.3% for 2nd instar, and 90% for 3rd instar. This article reports the results of research only. The antiinsectan properties of the Fusarium graminearum-derived novel sterol sulfate, 4,4,24-trimethylcholesta-8,14,24(28)-trien-2,3,11,12-tetrol 12 acetate, 3-sulfate were tested on the corn earworm (Heliothis zea (Boddie), the fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), and the driedfruit beetle (Carpophilus hemipterus L.). The sterol sulfate could not be used as a sterol source by any of the insects. The sterol sulfate inhibited growth of S. frugiperda and C. hemipterus larvae at 2500 and 4000 ppm, respectively. Defensive implications of this compound are discussed.

The bedbugs Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus are obligate hematophages in all their nymphal instars as well as in the adult stage. The efficiency with which the insects obtain blood from their hosts is directly related to their population dynamics. In the present study we compared the feeding process and salivary content in individuals of these two species when fed on different blood sources or host sites, using a cibarial pump electromyogram. Females ingested more blood than males but needed longer contact time with the host to complete the meal. The bedbug C. lectularius was more efficient than C. hemipterus in obtaining blood from mice and pigeons. With regard to the feeding site on mice, it was easier for the insects to obtain blood from the skin of the belly than that of the back. Individuals of C. hemipterus were able to maintain the cibarial pump functioning at higher frequencies for longer periods when fed on pigeons treated with anticoagulant. Although saliva from C. lectularius contained more hemeproteins and showed more anti-clotting activity its total protein content was similar to that of C. hemipterus. Overall, C. lectularius obtains a bloodmeal more efficiently from its hosts, which may have enabled this species to reach higher levels of infestation than C. hemipterus.

During two growing seasons, the use of an attract-and-kill system for control of Carpophilus spp. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and the effective range or drawing power of the attract-and-kill stations were examined in stone fruit orchards in the Goulburn Valley, northern Victoria, Australia. Three attract-and-kill stations, baited with synthetic aggregation pheromone plus co-attractant, were placed about 50 m apart in the upwind corner of each treated block 5–6 weeks before the fruit began to ripen. Large numbers of Carpophilus spp. were caught in the attract-and-kill stations immediately after placement. By the time fruit had ripened, the number of Carpophilus spp. caught had decreased greatly. Fruit damage caused by Carpophilus spp. in treated blocks, especially in 2000–2001 season, was almost zero (0.1% and 0.6%) in trees and on the ground, respectively, whereas the damage levels in control blocks were 5.2% and 19.9% in trees and on the ground, respectively. This study indicates that excellent protection of ripening stone fruit may be achieved by using attract-and kill-stations.

There is a close association between bowl-shaped cactus flowers and the nitidulid beetlesCarpophilus pallipennis (Say) andC. floralis Er. in North America. The nature of this association has not been clear. It now appears that the cactus flowers are brood sites of theCarpophilus beetles. The benefits in the association are one-sided, inasmuch as the beetles provide little or no pollination service for the flowers.Pollination of North American Cacti, VI.

Selected secondary metabolites produced by maize (Zea mays L.) were tested for effects on larvae and adults of the dried-fruit beetle [Carpophilus hemipterus (L.)] in no-choice and choice assays. Feeding by adults and larvae was significantly reduced by ferulic acid and 6-methoxy-2-benzoxazolinone (MBOA) in no-choice assays. In choice assays, larvae and adults generally preferred diets with trans-cinnamic acid, quercetin, rutin, and thymol, but were repelled by diets with either ferulic acid or MBOA.

Wind tunnel experiments were conducted to determine roles of odor learning in food foraging of the larval parasitoid,Microplitis croceipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). Females that had neither fed on sucrose water nor experienced any odor and females that had experienced an odor without feeding failed to respond to any odors in a wind tunnel. Most of the females that had fed without an odor also did not respond to odors. However, most of the females that had experienced an odor during feeding on sucrose water flew to the odor. These results indicate that when females experience an odor during feeding, they learn to associate the odor with food and subsequently respond to the odor. As age of females increased, their response to an experienced odor increased, peaked 2 to 5 days after emergence, and then decreased. With an increasing number of odor experiences while feeding, accuracy of females choosing the experienced odor increased. Females that experienced an odor while feeding three to five times chose the experienced odor 90% of the time. When females experienced an odor while feeding five times, the memory of food associated odor lasted at least 2 days. When they experienced food with two odors successively, they could memorize both odors, and multiple experiences did not cause memory interference. Even when females had learned a food-associated odor, their response to the learned odor ceased after several visits on patches containing the odor but no food. Such negative experience may cause switching of food searching to new odors by females.

Social bees generally host fewer nest invaders than do ants and termites. This is potentially explained by the adaptive defensive strategies of host bees when faced with nest invaders exhibiting various levels of colony integration (based on adaptations to the nest habitat and frequency of nest inhabitation). In the present study, experiments are performed to determine the behaviour at the nest entrance of European honeybee guards Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) toward beetle invaders of various levels of behavioural integration into colonies. The species used to test this include Aethina tumida Murray (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), which is regarded as a highly integrated, unwelcome guest (synechthran) or true guest (symphile); Lobiopa insularis Laporte (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Epuraea luteola Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) that are accidentals; and Carpophilus humeralis Fabricius (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), Carpophilus hemipterus L. (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae) and Tribolium castaneum Herbst (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), all of which are species that are not integrated into honeybee colonies. The responses of guard bees to a control bead also are noted. In general, bees ignore T. castaneum and E. luteola to a greater extent than other beetle species. Bees make contact with the black glass bead (a non‐aggressive behaviour) more than they do all beetle species. Bees treat A. tumida more defensively than they treat any other beetle species and the level of bee defensiveness varies by colony. These data suggest an adaptive heightened defensive response by bees toward the most integrated colony intruder but a significantly reduced level of response toward invaders representing all other levels of colony integration.

Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the role of learning in olfactory host searching by the ichneumonid pupal parasitoid, Pimpla luctuosa Smith. Females learned to associate novel odors such as vanilla and strawberry with hosts when they oviposited in at least several hosts with the odors. Repeated experiences of hosts with an odor increased the response of the experienced odor, and females that had experienced host odor seven times responded to the experienced odors 90% of the time. Although the response by females to a learned odor gradually decreased with increasing host-deprivation time, 60% of the females that had experienced host odor 7 days earlier still responded to the experienced odor. Females also learned two separate odors associated with hosts at a time and responded to both odors without a preference for one odor over the other. When trained two separate odors with hosts, females learned the second odor more quickly than the first odor. After females experienced several stings in simulated hosts with the previously learned odor, they ceased to respond to the learned odor, suggesting that repeated unrewarding experiences cause females to cease to respond to the learned odors.

Lepidodactylus lugubris, a parthenogenetic gekkonid lizard of possible tropical origin, occurs on Kita-Daitojima Island of the Ryukyu Archipelago and lays eggs almost throughout the year. The oviposition season of the sympatric population of another primary tropical, but bisexual gecko,Hemidactylus frenatus, is confined to between April and September. Laboratory experiments indicate that the hatching ratio of the egg reduces with the decrease of incubation temperature in both species. Some eggs ofL. lugubris develop at 14°C of ambient temperature, wheras eggs ofH. frenatus always die at temperatures of 18°C or lower. Examinations of stomach contents and fat body mass in the monthly samples suggest that food availability is not severely low for the geckos even during the winter, rejecting the previous assumption that food stress suppresses vitellogenesis inH. frenatus. No other environmental factors that may induce reproductive seasonality as phenotypic physiological responses were detected either. Tropical populations ofH. frenatus andL. lugubris are known to lack distinct annual reproductive cyclicity. Thus, it is probable that the East AsianH. frenatus has evolved the winter quiescence of reproduction, presumably due to the poor embryonic tolerance of low temperatures. The absence of such seasonality in the sympatricL. lugubris seems to be attributable to its clonal nature which predicts the low genetic variability of the population from the colonization stage.

Altica carduorum Guer. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) populations aggregate on vigorously growing stands of its host, the thistle Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. (Asteraceae). The beetle needs contact to recognize a Cirsium species and biting to distinguish its host C. arvense. Feeding or mechanical damage on C. arvense, but not other Cirsium species, aggregates the beetles. Also feces from feeding on C. arvense, but not other Cirsium species, aggregates the opposite sex. Adults also aggregate on larval feces. We suggest that initial host location in the spring depends on random encounter by beetles overwintering in a stand of C. arvense. The beetles commonly make short flights after feeding and either land on another C. arvense plant, which establishes a secondary aggregation centre, or return to the original one. In this manner beetles released on a stand of C. arvense in China spread a radius of 600 m in a year, but those released 35 m away from their host failed to find it. Altica carduorum will develop on any Cirsium species to which it is confined, but is monophagous in the field because host finding is dependent on aggregation to wound and feces substances that are specific to C. arvense.

Oriented responses of Trichogramma maidisPint, et Voeg. to airborne odors were observed in a four-armed olfactometer. Experiments were carried out with odors of host eggs, the sex pheromone of Ostrinia nubilalisHbn, and maize extract, offered singly or in combination, both to naive wasps and to wasps previously exposed to the tested odor during an oviposition experience. The exploratory behavior in the olfactometer was quantified by means of a computer program which performed a space-time analysis of the insect 's movements. Whereas the naive wasps did not respond to the odor of the eggs, the synthetic sex pheromone of O. nubilalis,or the maize extract presented singly, they did react to a mixture of these three volatile cues. Prior oviposition in the odor of maize extract or in the combination of odors induced an increased preference toward the conditioning scent. This phenomenon did not occur when the wasps were conditioned to egg odor or sex pheromone alone. These results suggest that females can learn to associate some olfactory cues with the presence of the host. Immediately following the presentation of the combination of odors, a strong attraction of experienced wasps occurred; it decreased as the experiment progressed and finally reached the level presented by naive insects. Adult conditioning to the combination of odors also resulted in reduced variability in the behavioral responses.

Typhlodromalus manihoti and Typhlodromalus aripo are exotic predators of the cassava green mite Mononychellus tanajoa in Africa. In an earlier paper, we showed that the two predators were attracted to odors from M. tanajoa-infested cassava leaves. In addition to the key prey species, M. tanajoa, two alternative prey mite species, Oligonychus ossypii and Tetranychus urticae also occur in the cassava agroecosystem. Here, we used a Y-tube olfactometer to determine the attraction of the predators to odors from O. gossypii- or T. urticae-infested cassava leaves and their prey-related odor preference. T. aripo but not T. manihoti was slightly attracted to odors from O. gossypii-infested leaves. Both predator species showed a stronger response to odors from cassava leaves infested by M. tanajoa over odors from cassava leaves infested by O. gossypii. Neither predator species was attracted to odors from T. urticae-infested leaves and the predators preferred the odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves over those from T. urticae-infested leaves. When O. gossypii was present together with M. tanajoa on the same leaves or on different sets of leaves offered together as an odor source the two predators were attracted. In contrast, after mixing non-attractive odors from T. urticae-infested leaves with attractive odors from M. tanajoa-infested leaves, neither T. aripo nor T. manihoti was attracted. Ecological advantages and disadvantages of the predators’ behavior and possible implications for biological control of M. tanajoa are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.

The occurrence of Protaetia lugubris, an endangered species developing in hollow trees, was studied in a network of rural avenues in northern Poland. We detected 1002 trees from nine species with hollows suitable for beetle development (25% of all trees inspected). Among them, 74 trees (7.4%) from seven species were occupied by P. lugubris. The distribution of P. lugubris was random with respect to tree species identity. The beetle preferred trees above 200 cm in circumference with a tendency towards higher occupancies of the bigger trees having circumferences above 300 cm. P. lugubris did not show any significant preferences according to hollow entrance area, exposition and road surface type. Our results indicate that P. lugubris is a generalist species colonizing all suitable hollows. Its occurrence indicates suitable conditions for many other species associated with tree cavities and decaying wood.
