Uganda has a rich bird diversity with 1 008 species including 28 listed species (Collar et al. 1994) and 207 species of regional conservation concern (Bennun & Njoroge 1996). Over 240 species are waterfowl, of which nine are globally threatened, 45 are regionally threatened and five are considered to be of national conservation interest. This high waterbird diversity corresponds to a large wetland area covering about 10% of the land area of Uganda. However, only 6% of the wetlands fall under gazetted protected areas and only one site is recognised as of global importance under the terms of the Ramsar Convention. Three recent activities of JA, the National Wetlands Programme and East Africa Natural History Society (Uganda), have produced new information on distribution and abundance of waterbirds in Uganda. Concurrent with these activities, criteria for the identification of globally threatened species (Collar et al. 1994), species of regional conservation concern (Bennun & Njoroge 1996) and nationally important species (National Wetlands Programme, in press) have been developed. Also, criteria for selection of sites at the global (Ramsar and IBA), regional (IBA) and national (National Wetlands Programme) levels have become available. This paper reviews the advances in the knowledge of waterbirds in Uganda and applies the above criteria to highlight sites that are crucial for conservation at global, regional and national levels.  相似文献

The African Waterfowl Census (AFWC) is now in its sixth year of operation as a coordinated wetland monitoring programme for sub-Saharan Africa. A comprehensive review of the AFWC took place in 1995 and 1996, including a widely-circulated questionnaire and a special meeting in Senegal. The results from this review process are being used to develop the programme as a lasting tool for wetland conservation and management in Africa. This paper summarises these results. The AFWC currently involves about 25 countries, which all submit data annually to enable waterbird numbers and distribution to be viewed at regional and international levels. On a national level, results are used variably for the identification and designation of Wetlands of International importance (Ramsar Sites), for standard wetland monitoring programmes, for wetland and species management actions and for setting hunting quotas. In some countries, large networks have already been established, comprising scientists, managers and local volunteers. Priorities for the future operation of the AFWC include: a) the establishment of a Steering Committee with representation from all regions; b) election of National Coordinators in all countries; c) national and regional training initiatives; d) a field guide to African waterbirds and basic monitoring exercises; e) involving local communities in basic monitoring exercises; and f) increasing the use of results, especially in support of the Bonn and Ramsar Conventions. The AFWC is uniquely placed to help countries meet obligations under the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA) under the Bonn Convention. Increased collaboration and information exchange between National Coordinators and others will lead to a greater knowledge of wetland networks important for migratory waterbirds. This in turn will help in the identification of conservation priorities for particular species, for threatened wetlands that form vital components of migration networks and for threatened wetland habitats.  相似文献

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) symbiosis was thought to be rare in wetland plant roots, although several recent studies suggested that this association might be important in wetland ecosystems. In this research work we have studied the distribution of AMF in the marshy and shoreline vegetation of Deepar Beel Ramsar site of Assam, India. The study reveals the percentage of mycorrhizal colonization in the roots of different plant species which were observed from 20.89 to 86.47% and particularly found larger among the members of the family Poaceae. The Vetiveria zizanioides L. from the family Cyperaceae showed the highest (86.47%) percentage of root colonization, however, only one plant species viz. Scirpus lateriflorus Gmel. from the same family was found to be nonmycorrhizal. The rhizospheric soil samples of most of the plant species were found to be dominated by Glomus morphotypes. All total 18 AMF morphotypes were recorded which comprises four genera viz. Glomus (66.67%), Acaulospora (16.66%), Gigaspora (11.11%) and Scutellospora (5.56%). The observation of diversity of AMF in 25 different plant species among the wetland plants gives a glimpse of AMF diversity and their host selectivity in the said ecosystem.  相似文献

Silurodiscoides Gussev, 1976, is considered a junior subjective synonym of Thaparocleidus Jain, 1952, based on priority. Hence 70 monogenean species assigned to Silurodiscoides, Parancylodiscoides, Wallagotrema and Urocleidus from Asian and Eurasian freshwater siluriformes are re-assigned to Thaparocleidus as new combinations. Wallagotrema indicus Singh & Sharma, 1992 is renamed Thaparocleidus sharmae nom. nov. The generic characteristics of Thaparocleidus are those of Silurodiscoides and the type-species is Thaparocleidus wallagonius Jain, 1952 from Wallago attu.  相似文献

The catshark genus Holohalaelurus Fowler is currently represented by five species distributed off the southern and eastern parts of the African coast. Very few parasitological records exist for any of these five species, representing a significant knowledge gap. We report the first monogenean species from the bathydemersal species Holohalaelurus regani (Gilchrist): a new species of Microbothriidae Price, 1936, Leptomicrobothrium holohalaelure n. sp. from the dorsal skin surface, and a new species of Hexabothriidae Price, 1942 representing a new genus, Scyliorhinocotyle narvaezae n. gen., n. sp., from the gill lamellae. Both monogenean records represent the first for any member of the catshark genus Holohalaelurus. Previously we focused on the identification of monogenean taxa of emerging veterinary importance for public aquaria. We now begin a focused effort to document a generally unexplored monogenean biodiversity from diverse marine habitats off South Africa.

Heavy metals are an important class of pollutants with both lethal and sublethal effects on organisms. Wetlands are cheap natural alternatives for removal of heavy metals from soils; however, wetland plants vary greatly in their degree of metal uptake. Hokersar wetland, a Ramsar site of Kashmir Himalaya, India is a game reserve of international importance that provides suitable habitat for resident birds and an excellent stopover point for migratory birds visiting from Palaearctic breeding grounds in Central Asia, China, N-Europe and Siberia. The toxicity of chronic dietary metal exposure in birds may have adverse reproductive effects which include decreased egg production, decreased hatchability, and increased hatchling mortality. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the heavy metal sequestration capability of one of the most common wetland plant species Phragmites australis in Hokersar wetland. The accumulation of the different elements was in order of Al > Mn > Ba > Zn > Cu > Pb > Mo > Co > Cr > Cd > Ni. Translocation factor, i.e. ratio of shoot to root metal concentration revealed that metals were largely retained in the roots of P. australis, thus reducing the supply of metals to avifauna and preventing their bio-accumulation.  相似文献

Malalophus jensenae n. g., n. sp. is described from the gills of the ornate eagle ray Aetomylaeus vespertilio (Bleeker) collected off the eastern coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria, northern Queensland. The new genus is similar to Heliocotyle Neifar, Euzet & Ben Hassine, 1999, with which it shares a haptor bearing seven peripheral loculi and a single dorsal haptoral accessory structure. M. jensenae can be distinguished from species of Heliocotyle by the presence of numerous sclerotised sinuous ridges covering the ventral surfaces of the peripheral loculi of the haptor. It also lacks pseudosepta which are present on the haptor of Heliocotyle species. This is the first published record of a monogenean from an elasmobranch in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia.  相似文献

We investigated habitat use and diversity of waterbirds at one of the coastal and satellite lagoons around Lake Biwa, which is a registered wetland of the Ramsar Convention in Japan. To evaluate the importance for waterbirds of a lagoon around the freshwater lake, we conducted 26 censuses over 1 year on seven blocks with different landscape elements in a small lagoon. A total of 25 species were found and most of them (72%) belonged to a guild in which birds forage without diving. Species density (per ha) and diversity was high in blocks where Zizania latifolia Turcz and Phragmites australis L. reed beds existed. Not all of the waterbird species were feeding all the time, but were often resting in their preferred blocks, suggesting that they use the lagoon as both a refuge and a feeding site. Habitats with a structural reed bed community and shallow waters (<1 m depth) may be crucial determinants of high waterbird diversity in this small lagoon around which many people live.  相似文献

A survey of adults of dilepidid tapeworms (Cyclophyllidea) from piscivorous birds from Mexico is presented on the basis of the taxonomic evaluation of freshly collected and voucher specimens. The following species are reported (first records from Mexico marked with an asterisk): Cyclustera capito (Rudolphi, 1819); * C. ibisae (Schmidt & Bush, 1972); * Dendrouterina ardeae Rausch, 1955; * D. herodiae Fuhrmann, 1912; * D. papillifera (Fuhrmann, 1908); Glossocercus auritus (Rudolphi, 1819); * Neogryporhynchus cheilancristrotus (Wedl, 1855); Paradilepis caballeroi Rysavy & Macko, 1973; Paradilepis sp.; Parvitaenia cochlearii Coil, 1955; and Valipora mutabilis Linton, 1927. Dendrouteria herodiae is reported from America for the first time. New definitive hosts are Phalacrocorax olivaceus for C. capito, N. cheilancristrotus and P. caballeroi; Casmerodius albus and Egretta thula for G. auritus; and E. thula for D. herodiae. Data on the morphology of the rostellar hooks of all species, their hosts and distribution in Mexico are provided.  相似文献

Metacestodes of Dendrouterina papillifera (Fuhrmann, 1908), previously reported from the gall-bladder of the pimelodid catfish Rhamdia guatemalensis from Mexico by Scholz et al. (1996), belong actually to V. minuta. Data on the morphology of metacestodes, their fish hosts and rate of infection, site and distribution in Mexico are provided.  相似文献

Microcotyle arripis Sandars, 1945 is redescribed from Arripis georgianus from four localities: Spencer Gulf, Gulf St. Vincent, off Kangaroo Island and Coffin Bay, South Australia, Australia. Kahawaia truttae (Dillon & Hargis, 1965) Lebedev, 1969 is reported from A. trutta off Bermagui, New South Wales and is redescribed from a new host, A. truttaceus, from four localities in South Australian waters: Spencer Gulf, Gulf St. Vincent, off Kangaroo Island and Coffin Bay. Phylogenetic analysis of the partial 28S ribosomal RNA gene (28S rRNA) nucleotide sequences for both microcotylid species and comparison with other available sequence data for microcotylid species across four genera contributes to our understanding of relationships in this monogenean family.  相似文献

Sundatrema langkawiense n. g., n. sp. (Monogenea: Ancyrocephalidae) is described from the gills of the orbfish Ephippus orbis (Bloch) (Ephippidae) off the Island of Langkawi, Malaysia, in the Andaman Sea. This new genus has the ancyrocephalid characteristics of four anchors, 14 marginal hooks and two bars, but differs from other four-anchored monogenean genera, and notably from Parancylodiscoides Caballero & Bravo Hollis, 1961 (found on the ephippids Chaetodipterus spp. off Central and South America), by having a unique combination of features. These include a muscular genital sucker and a vas deferens and vagina on the same (sinistral) side of the body. It is similar to Parancylodiscoides in having four haptoral reservoirs opening at the anchoral apertures, four anchors, similar connecting bars and small marginal hooks. The new species is characterised by the above generic features and by possessing a small, short copulatory organ lacking an accessory piece. Diplectanum longiphallus MacCallum, 1915 (previously attributed to Ancyrocephalus Creplin, 1839, Tetrancistrum Goto & Kikuchi, 1917 and Pseudohaliotrema Yamaguti, 1953) is transferred to Parancylodiscoides as P. longiphallus (MacCallum, 1915) n. comb.  相似文献

The study outlines the evolution of ecological research on waterbirds and wetland conservation initiatives in Ghana over a ten year period, 1986–1996. A survey of waterbird populations was initiated in the country in October 1985, through a collaborative effort between the Ghana Government, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) UK and BirdLife International. These studies identified key wetland sites on the Ghana coast which have been regularly monitored up to today, thus providing the most comprehensive long-term data on waterbird populations within the West African sub-region. Over the ten year period the simple waterbird counting has led to comprehensive ecological research on waterbirds, the establishment of a national Bird Ringing Scheme and the development of a core of trained ornithologists in Ghana. In terms of conservation action, the data provided the justification for designation of the five most important coastal wetland sites as Ramsar sites and the establishment of the Ghana Coastal Wetlands Management Project (CWMP) to manage the sites. The management strategy adopted seeks not only to maintain the ecological integrity of the wetlands, but more importantly, to enhance the benefits derived from wetlands by local communities and improve the quality of life for the coastal people. Management actions are guided by a multi-disciplinary research on the coastal wetland ecosystem, which incorporates biological, physico-chemical and socio-economic dimensions. The large body of environmental data accumulated during the initial stages of the CWMP provide a solid base for the monitoring of the ecological character of the wetlands and the evaluation of management activities. The events in Ghana clearly demonstrate the value of a strong scientific data-base in our efforts to promote conservation of Africa's wetlands and wetland resources.  相似文献

This is a catalogue and discussion of the known dactylogyridean monogenean genera of siluriform fishes of the Old World. Of a total of 38 nominal genera, only 19 are considered valid. Seventeen of these 19 genera are currently in the Ancyrocephalidae (containing the Ancyrocephalinae and Ancylodiscoidinae), whilst the other two (Neocalceostoma and Neocalceostomoides) are in the Neocalceostomatidae. The 17 genera are Anchylodiscus, Ancylodiscoides, Bagrobdella, Bifurcohaptor, Bychowskyella, Chauhanellus, Cornudiscoides, Hamatopeduncularia, Mizelleus, Paraquadriacanthus, Pseudancylodiscoides, Protoancylodiscoides, Quadriacanthus, Schilbetrema, Schilbetrematoides, Synodontella and Thaparocleidus. Clariotrema Long, 1981 and Neobychowskyella Ma, Wang & Li, 1983 are considered synonyms of Bychowskyella Akhmerov, 1952, Anacornuatus Dubey, Gupta & Agarwal, 1992 is considered a synonym of Quadriacanthus Paperna, 1961, Mizellebychowskia Gupta & Sachdeva, 1990 is considered a synonym of Neocalceostoma Tripathi, 1959 and Hargitrema Tripathi, 1959 is treated as a synonym of Hamatopeduncularia Yamaguti, 1953. It is proposed that the Ancylodiscoidinae be raised to family status within the order Dactylogyridea to accommodate these 17 `ancyrocephalid' genera from siluriforms, together with Malayanodiscoides and Notopterodiscoides from notopterids. A key and the diagnostic characteristics of the 19 recognised dactylogyridean genera from catfishes plus two from notopterids, together with a list of species and synonyms, are included. New combinations made in this work are Thaparocleidus avicularia (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. calyciflorus (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. choanovagina (Luo & Lang, 1981) n. comb., T. dissimilis (Chen, 1988) n. comb., T. leiocassis (Reichenbach-Klinke, 1959) n. comb., T. meticulosa (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. parasoti (Zhao & Ma, 1999) n. comb., T. persculpus (Chen, 1987) n. comb., T. valga (Chen, 1987) n. comb. and T. wulingensis (Yao & Wang, 1997) n. comb. [all from Silurodiscoides] and Bychowskyella glyptothoraci (Ma, Wang & Li, 1983) n. comb. [from Neobychowskyella].  相似文献

Wetland restoration is used to compensate for historic and ongoing wetland losses. We compared bird community composition in 24 restored wetlands and 36 natural wetlands in the Parkland region of Alberta. Natural wetlands ranged in exposure to agricultural activity and were binned into three classes (low, medium, and high disturbance). Although the abundance and average species richness of birds were similar between restored and natural wetlands (analysis of variance: p > 0.22), the avian community composition differed significantly among wetland types (multiresponse permutation procedure [MRPP]: A = 0.05, p < 0.001). The avifauna using restored wetlands was distinct from the avifauna using natural wetlands spanning a range of disturbance levels (A = 0.02–0.06; p ≤ 0.006). Notably, restored wetlands were surrounded by less shrub/forest cover and more open water than low‐disturbance, natural wetlands. The majority (58%) of species using the surveyed wetlands were not classified as wetland‐dependent. Interestingly, if only wetland‐dependent species are considered, the avifauna using restored wetlands is no longer distinctive (MRPP: A < 0.01, p = 0.187), although the abundance of wetland‐dependent birds was marginally higher in restored wetlands (n = 24) than in low‐disturbance, natural wetlands (n = 10; Tukey's honestly significant difference test: p = 0.041). Overall, restored wetlands had reduced beta diversity compared to natural wetlands, regardless of whether the avifauna were restricted to wetland‐dependent species or considered comprehensively. This draws into question the legitimacy of the assumption that restoration can fully offset continued losses of natural wetlands.  相似文献

Cestode parasites were collected from Barbus paludinosus from Munwahuku Dam near Harare, Zimbabwe over a period of 13 months. Plerocercoids of Ligula intestinalis were found in 7.2% of the fish. The majority of the infected fish carried one parasite, with 3.1% having two and 1.6% with three. There was a positive correlation (r = 0.59, P < 0.05) between the weight of L. intestinalis and that of their host, but there was no significant relationship between the condition factor of the fish and the weight of the parasite, and the parasite index was low (7.97 ± 3.38) compared to previous studies in South Africa. The gonads of all infected fish were atrophied. The prevalence of L. intestinalis in B. paludinosus was high between July and September 2000 and low thereafter. There was no clear seasonal variation in the occurrence of the parasite, although the lengthy dry season might have had an effect on the prevalence.  相似文献

Micropterus salmoides is a North American piscivorous fish on the IUCN list of 100 of the world’s worst invasive alien species. Introduced into Lake Naivasha (Kenya) in 1929, their current population abundance is significantly depressed in a lake that has recently become dominated by fishes of the Cyprinidae family; the introduced cyprinid Cyprinus carpio now dominates catches in the commercial fishery and Barbus paludinous is now numerically dominant in the fish community. Long-term diet studies of M. salmoides based on gut contents analysis (GCA) have defined their diet spectrum, feeding preferences and ontogenetic dietary shifts. Between 1987 and 1991, diet was size-structured; fish <260 mm were mainly insectivorous and fish >260 mm fed mainly on invasive crayfish Procambarus clarkia with B. paludinosus rarely taken. More recent GCA data revealed that up to 2003, these size-structured trophic relationships were still evident, but there has been a subsequent shift to their feeding almost exclusively on small (<100 mm) B. paludinosus, coincident with a size-related functional switch whereby M. salmoides >120 mm were now piscivorous. However, a Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (SIAR) suggested M. salmoides diet actually remained relatively varied in 2006 and 2007; it indicated P. clarkii were still contributing more to their diet than B. paludinosus in fish <260 mm and provided only partial support for the functional shift. The consequence of the M. salmoides depressed population abundance is their predation pressure on prey fishes is limited and preventing top-down effects. This is in contrast to their invasive populations elsewhere in the world and the likely result of invasion meltdown processes in Naivasha involving the introduced C. carpio and P. clarkii that have produced sub-optimal foraging conditions for M. salmoides.  相似文献

Saline inland and coastal waterbodies are valuable habitats that deserve attention for the protection of their unique submerged macrophyte beds that render the water clear, stabilize sediments and provide a habitat for high biomasses of invertebrates as food for waterfowl. The ‘continental seagrass’ Ruppia has the widest salinity tolerance among the submerged macrophytes and occurs in a wide variety of saline saltmarsh pond and lagoon systems. Although two cosmopolitan species Ruppia maritima and Ruppia cirrhosa are recognized in Europe and Ruppia drepanensis in the western Mediterranean, their diversity and distribution are not well known. This previously held traditional idea that there are only two widespread Ruppia species suggests a uniform and very homogenized population structure following the hypothesis of long-distance-dispersal through strong bird-mediated dispersal events. Therefore, the Ruppia chloroplast DNA diversity was investigated along a more than 1,000 km transect of the Iberian Peninsula. We studied 492 individuals from 11 wetland areas (17 ponds) and sequenced a 1,753-bp length of seven chloroplast introns. Eight haplotypes represented at least four distinct groups or taxa which is higher than commonly accepted. Six wetland areas contained more than one haplotype and within-pond diversity occurred within distances as small as 30 m (5 out of 17 cases). This underlines the importance of single waterbodies for harbouring haplotypic diversity in Ruppia. Unique haplotypes were observed in four wetland areas and R. maritima was detected only from a low salinity pond, suggesting the species might be more rare than previously accepted. The present results tend to minimize an overall effect of strong bird-mediated dispersal. A new ancyrocephalid monogenean is described from the gills of wild White-spottedrabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus (Park) based on morphological and molecular analyses. Glyphidohaptor safiensis n. sp. can be distinguished from other members of the genus by the shape of the accessory piece of the male copulatory organ (MCO). Unlike its congeners, the rod-shaped accessory piece of G. safiensis n. sp. is distally broad and flattened. The MCO of G. safiensis n. sp. is curved, enclosed in a heavy sheath with a terminal flap. Partial large subunit (LSU), partial small subunit (SSU) and the partial SSU, entire internal transcribed spacer region 1 (ITS1) and partial 5.8S rDNA of the new species and two species of Tetrancistrum Goto & Kikuchi, 1917 from the same host and locality were sequenced and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. The LSU rDNA analysis grouped G. safiensis n. sp. with Tetrancistrum sp. from the gills of Siganus fuscescens Houttuyn from Australia, indicating a possible misidentification of the latter. Sequences of the SSU rDNA of the new species were most similar to those for Pseudohaliotrema sphincteroporus Yamaguti, 1953, demonstrating the close relatedness of the genera Pseudohaliotrema Yamaguti, 1953 and Glyphidohaptor Kritsky, Galli & Yang, 2007 within the Ancyrocephalidae. The comparison of the partial SSU (424 bp) and entire ITS1 and partial 5.8S rDNA (246 bp) sequences obtained for G. safiensis n. sp. with the only available sequence of another member of Glyphidohaptor Kritsky, Galli & Yang, 2007, G. pletocirra Paperna, 1972 (HE601931-HE601933) yielded on average 1.08% dissimilarity (a difference of 7 bases), with a p-distance of 0.010 ± 0.004%. This is the first record of a species of Glyphidohaptor from S. canaliculatus and from the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
